Best comment on this thread. You hit the nail on the head very articulately Mayflowa: There is no better life in London than Nigeria. The weather stabs you in your chest, the food is awkward and no playmate to hobnob with. The only joy derived is the good infrastructure and opportunity to earn more money. Without money, to hell with infrastructure.
It is not out of kindness the doctor and wife brought the lady to UK. She is the easiest target to be used. She was house help to their parents with little or no paid and they felt they could continue the trend in London. An hourly pay for maids is 20 pounds. That is 200 pounds for 10 hour day and 1400 pounds a week. This couple intends to use and enfeeble the poor maid until she is not useful to herself and the society. So don't defend their wickedness |

There's nothing for her to be grateful for here. Is it the British oxygen that she should be thankful for? She couldnt send money home, couldn't save, wasn't improving her own prospects. Visa 50k. Passport 10k. Ticket 200k. So how could they have spent millions? Yes, there are multiple sides to any story, and then the truth - but they were wicked and greedy to agree £450 and pay £80, then slap an adult for asking for more money. If that kind of exploitation goes unchecked in Nigeria, they should have known it can't fly In Britain. blackberlin: I never called her an ingrate. I said she shouldn't be an ingrate. You should know that those who spent millions in taking her over there would most likely not just give her a mere 20 pounds. Some Nigerians go abroad and try to blackmail people so they can cash out big time.
People shouldn't jump into conclusion cos only God knows the truth. |

claremont: I don't want this to turn into a thread about properties, just google ''Convert 2 bedroom to HMO''. It's very possible and doable with a bit of capital. The Asians have been doing this for donkey years, and renting out the rooms to students and people on housing benefit. Do some research on it, you will be surprised what you will find. I didn't want to either, but you wanted to engage in the conversation here for others to benefit. You did illuminate on some interesting points, thank you for that, However, I still think converting a 2 bed to a 5 bed is illegal. There are strict rules about this sort of thing -- http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1985/68/part/X |
Travel › Re: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by ocheejemb: 9:31pm On Jul 28, 2016 |
claremont: Let's assume you buy a residential home with a 30% deposit, you then need a mortgage of 70%. You get the mortgage, and keep up monthly payments for a year and even make some lump sum payments to offset the mortgage. At the end of a year, your equity in the property is about 40%. You apply for a second buy-to-let mortgage using some savings and some equity from the first property. Bear in mind that most Buy-to-let mortgages require a minimum of 25% equity, so basically, the property you aim for would be properties in the lower end of the market. This would rule out the south, and hence, the focus on the north of England.
Haha Tell that to Landlords who make thousands splitting up a 2 -bedroom house into 5 bedrooms and renting out each room to students. Assuming each student rents the room for £200/month, and total mortgage payments and bills is £500/month, it still leaves the Landlord with a net inflow of £500/month from just one property. Plus the Landlord doesn't pay any council tax as students are exempt from paying it, electric bills are equally shared by the students.
Whatever taxes incurred can be offset as expenses. Insurance is a standard requirement for every home in the country, just a matter of upgrading to Landlord insurance rather than the normal home insurance. You will never get permission to convert a 2-bed to a 5-bed in the UK. In some towns, you even need a HMO licence for more than 2 unrelated people to stay together. I guess it is feasible to own property like that outside London sha where you could get property in the region of 150k or less. In any casde, it is not as simple as you make it sound. Unless you have actually done it, then i stand corrected. |

claremont: Sorry, no offline messages mate. Ask everything on here so others can benefit. Right. So I was wondering if you have actually taken out two mortgages, where in the UK, and how, specifically, does the equity on the first helps towardsthe second? It often seems to me a mortgage is more of a liability than an asset. Especially if you are buying to let, then the actual margins between what you can collect as rent and what you have to pay back as mortgage, is in the region of tens to hundreds of pounds. Then there will be all sorts of tax and hidden costs and insurance eating into your tiny margins. Indeed the value of the house itself could rise astronomically, if it is in that sort of area. But even accessing that latent value would be prohibitively expensive. Of course I might be wrong as Ive only done secondary research from quite a distance. |

spacyzuma: For the people who've been in UK for years and are now working or doing business here, how do you deal with credit?
From personal experiences, which bank gives the best credit card deals? I've googled and have a list, but I wanna hear experiences from fellow Nigerians. If you are new to credit, I think your choices might be limited anyway. But it shouldn't really matter in terms of the interest rate and all, if you stay well below the limit. After some months your credit score will improve and then you can get even better deals. |
Travel › Re: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by ocheejemb: 8:54pm On Jul 27, 2016 |
claremont: The bank that would give you the best deal is the bank you already have a good history with i.e. the bank where your cash inflow and outflow goes to. They can see your history, so they would already know how you manage money. I registered with RBS as a post-graduate student in 2009, it took me till 2013 to get an overdraft with them, I got my first credit card with them in 2014 and a second one in 2015. If you are working with a good credit history, your bank will keep on shoving credit facilities into your face. You have to be very careful in the way you use credit, you can ruin your life if you misuse it to the point when you struggle to pay it back.
Credit, when used properly can open up a lot of doors, especially for those interested in investing in the UK property market. You can get a mortgage for a property, rent that property out. Use the equity from the first property as deposit for a second mortgage. Just keep on rolling it over like that. Funny how I was literally thinking about this when I logged in and read this. Are you doing this right now? Can we talk offline? |

Crime › Re: I Was Harrased By Police For Having A Foreign Number On Contact List by ocheejemb: 2:16pm On Jul 21, 2016 |
sszest: I have always read news of police brutality online but never fully understood what the victims went through until I had a first hand experience on Wednesday, 13th July, 2016. On that very day, which has become a day I will never forget in my life, I was headed to jibowu to assist my sister get a bus back to the east after her visit to Lagos. Just before the park area, there was a police checkpoint and as I was walking towards the park with my sister, one of the police officers at the checkpoint signaled me to come. When I went to answer him, he demanded for my phone, I brought it out, he collected it and started scrolling through my contacts. The next thing I heard was "You are a criminal! Wetin foreign number dey do for your phone?……...". The contact in question is that of my school friend who just went to the UK for his masters program, but before I could say Jack, I have been pushed into their vehicle, a danfo bus with the registration number, XU754LND. Each time I demanded to know what exactly my crime was, the response I got was something like "Keep Quiet! Shut Up! You are a thief! You are a criminal!…..." My sister was not also spared of the harassment. At that point, I had to raise my voice attracting passerby's who also demanded to know when having a foreign contact has become a crime. Suddenly, their oga instructed them to move. I don't know how the thoughts came to me but before they moved, I jumped out of the bus through the window. With the heightened tension and the increasing number of people gathering there, they just threw my phone at me and sped off.
The following day, a friend of mine suggested I make a report at a police station. I took the advice and went to Alagbon Police Statio, Ikoyi. Do you know what they told me there? That since they no longer have my phone, I shouldn't worry, that "It's a normal thing". The Nigerian police literally told me that harassment of innocent citizens is a normal thing. Who else do I report to?
My understanding is that there are dozens of similar cases that go unnoticed daily especially in Lagos. As it is, I think the only way police brutality may be put to a near end is by giving such cases as much publicity as possible. May be at some point in the future, someone in a position of authority may be touched to take genuine actions to put an end to it and not just pay lip service. Was one of them a huge yellow guy. They did this to me a few years ago too. I went to thier office and then they let me go. It was harassment but they didn't hurt me sha. They had two other guys in the bus though, and where negotiating a bribe. |

claremont: It wouldn't favour international students or immigrants in general I'm afraid. Theresa May headed the Home Office for 6 years, and her time in that Office has seen the promulgation of the most hostile immigration policies against international students. That was when the UK hadn't voted the leave the EU, the policies will be even more hostile now that she is supposed to be heading a new government that will take the UK out of the EU.
If the intent of the international student is to come to the UK for studying alone, that's not set to change. If the intent is to immigrate after studying, I wouldn't recommend the UK at this point in time. I also foresee the financial threshold to get married will be increased from the present £18,500 to at least £30,000. This will almost close down the marriage route of immigration. Tier 1 and Tier 2 visa salary threshold might also be raised as well.
What we are hoping for is that the Labour Party gets its house in order and present a formidable opposition force to the forthcoming hostile immigration policies. I disagree. Long term, say after 2020, Brexit will benefit international students. Short term, the situation is likely to not real change much. Although some employers might become more willing to sponsor good non-EU students now, if they are thinking forward to a post Brexit era. The UK really does need some immigration, if there will be any economic growth. On one hand, the stoppage of an free inflow of hardworking EU workers means prices of goods and services will rise dramatically, when entitled Brits are the only one who can take these jobs, especially the low skilled ones. For instance, I read about truck drivers somewhere in England who used to earn £16 an hour years ago, but a glut of EU drivers crashed the wage down to £9. If these wages go back up, then prices of goods will have to rise as well. It will even be worse with high skilled jobs. It has been proven that although Cameron's Govt had been pushing against immigration, without high figures for it, there would be no way that the current population can meet economic targets (budget surplus by 2020). Now that the workforce can't easily come from Europe, it means everyone else now has a fairer chance of getting a work visa. Of course, you still need relevant skills. I don't think Theresa May was all that hostile towards international students as Home Secretary. She had a impossible directive from her boss; to reduce immigration to the tens of thousands. So, she ensured that many loopholes are blocked. Unfortunately she's also made it tougher for fresh grads to get sponsored. BUT, all in all, immigration has actually risen, despite all her efforts. |
