TV/MoviesRe: My Experience Of "Half Of A Yellow Sun" At The Cinema by ocheejemb: 11:59am On Aug 04, 2014
amibonaija: This movie was over hyped, I have to rush and see it at cinema Delux. But it didn't meet my expectation.

I was expecting a detail of the civil was in picture but what I saw was like an abstract of the main thing.

Is this the "half of a Yellow. Sun" or should we wait for another?

What is your view ?
Have you read the book? If you had read the book you would know what to expect.

nedu2000: I know most parents talk about how their kids finish 1st in class then who's the child that finishes last!!
My uncle's 16-yr-old child is such a person,he's dad bribed his way into secondary after he failed common entrance, after repeating JS1 and JS 2 twice, his dad was called in by his school principal(govt school) to come and carry away his ward!!My uncle not knowing what to do,send my cousin down to Lagos to live with us and join my little brother in his school(they are both age-mates but my brother is in SS3).
In Lagos,he couldn't pass the qualifying exam to my broher's school so we had to make do with one of those secondary schools that don't arrange such exams. In school, the results didn't change 22nd/24 students after 3 attempts in the same class?haba. He also possesses criminal tendencies as he forged his last term results,he doesn't write notes claiming he's a slow writer and its a natural liar. His parents are confused.
Surely there are parents who's wards aren't(weren't) doing well academically, what's the way out? sad
He may be dyslexic. He must have some strengths. School isn't really for everyone, but an education is very important.

Seun: What improvements do you what us to make? What aspect of Nairaland's UI is preventing you from enjoying the forum right now? Thanks.
Oga himself.

I already enjoy the forum, I visit it daily. However, I'd like to see more user-friendly features. My pet peeve right now is the FB/LK/ MT/ FG etc menu items at the top of the page which do not convey any information to a naive user.

I appreciate these might be because of space, but its not the best design practice to have non-intuitive name-spaces, even for hard-core terminal programmers. If space is the concern, then this top-menu could easily be arranged vertically on a mobile device, using a responsive CSS design. (I note that Nairaland IS responsive, so this shouldn't be much of an issue).

Another thing that would be nice is to have things like drop down boxes, which can de-clutter a page and yet have no impact on the amount of data required to load it.

And as someone has mentioned, some social functions, it could be easier to see who's following you, who you follow etc.

exxell: As far as am concerned, Nairaland is functional.... and thats what really matters. I have seen so many websites with Good UI but really crappy in functionality.
Theres no doubt about its functionality and speed, but there's nothing to say you can not improve UX without affecting functionality.

WebHostingPal: Simon says, that Nairaland would loose values should there be an attempt to change the layout and feel of the website. Although it is possible, but a great care had to be taken. If I were the owner of Nairaland, I would not bother to change anything, perhaps he knows this himself.
Come to think of it, most of the greatest website today are as basic looking as you want it. Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, ebay, paypal etc... PayPal is just making attempt to change bits and bobs in their user area and a great work had been done to achieve what they have achieved today, same as ebay.
The design of a website is part of SEO and Google is quite happy with Nairaland at the moment and personally I wouldn't trade that for anything, I don't know about yous...
Website is never about the design, but the contents of the website, designs are supplementaries, so having a great looking website with all bells and whistles does not make your web site SEO Ready....
In a not shell, I think Nairaland is fine because it is accessible to every user, it's fast loading and SEO friendly and I wouldn't change it for anything if you ask me smiley
Again just changing the UI should not affect the SEO or functionality at all, in fact with Nairaland's size and share SEO is not their problem at all. I come to Nairaland to search for specific information, rather than the other way around. Facebook, Twitter and Wikipedia are far from basic, perharps too cluttered even. I don't think Nairaland would lose value with a more attractive UI, actually I think they'd gain more users.
WebmastersRe: Just Wondering Why Nairaland's UI Is So Basic by ocheejemb(op): 8:06pm On Jul 29, 2014
funshint: Why cry more than the bereaved; do you know how much Seun makes per month! Though he can go public but that depends on the financial projection and goal of the owner #Seun. Remember its not about making the biggest deal but getting the best result possible. Being conservative for now might just be Seun's best way of remaining relevant. Many companies hv made big decisions in the past that eventually led to their ruin. I believe when nl gets to that bridge it'll definitely cross it. Even LindaIkeji still can't boast of what Seun has in terms of relevance, coverage and money.
Sure, Nairaland is vey important and makes a lot of money, and I don't think thats going to stop any time soon. However, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be innovative and improve the Interface and User Experience. In fact the recent hack just goes to show that Nairaland can't really rest on her oars, you have to keep moving. If Mark Z was fine with Facebook's initial success, Facebook won't be were it is today, much more than just a social network. The same can be for Nairaland.

I was wondering why Nairaland has such a basic, and (sorry to say) unattractive UI and UX?

The colours are quite drab, and the headings at the top? FT, FB, LK, show very bad design practices even for hardcore-programmers.

As far as community is concerned, Nairaland is great (most times), and very helpful to thousands of Internet users if not more. The other day I saw people from Malaysia and Pakistan asking for advice on certain issues, and they got it.

Why isn't Nairaland trying to improve this?

Chaze85: My course is for 12mos program do I need to have the 12mos fee plus the 9mos maintenance or 9mos fee plus 9 mos maintenance is acceptable?
Full fees for the year (no such thing as nine months fees, although you may be able to set up a payment plan with your Uni) + 9 months maintenance

Money (ALso KnoWn As MAIntenAnCe oR FUnDs)
Money you will need

43. The money you will need to show must be enough to cover the course fees for your first
period of study or, if you are continuing a course, for the next period of study, and living costs
for up to a maximum of nine months. Your living costs might include payments towards the
costs of your accommodation or purchasing study materials such as books or stationery.
A maximum of £1,020 paid to your sponsor in advance for your accommodation can be
deducted from the amount of maintenance you must show that you have, even if you have
paid more than £1,020 in advance.

45. If you are starting out on a new course, your Tier 4 sponsor must give the fees for the first
year of the course, or for the entire course if the course is less than a year long, on your
CAS

Chaze85: Can go to any teaching hospital for my tuberculosis test?like luth or oouth?are they accredited for UK visa?
No, you can onlu use IOM. Says so here
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/tuberculosis-test-for-a-uk-visa-clinics-in-nigeria/tuberculosis-testing-in-nigeria

1. Approved test clinics
You must be tested for tuberculosis if you are coming to the UK for more than 6 months and a resident of Nigeria or Benin.

Your test must be from a clinic approved by the Home Office. We will not accept a tuberculosis test certificate from a clinic we haven’t approved.

The following are approved clinics in Nigeria. There are no approved clinics in Benin, so if you’re from there you’ll need to travel to Nigeria to be tested.

1.1 Lagos
Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC)
International Organization for Migration (IOM)
74B, Sir Michael Otedola Crescent, off Joel Ogunnaike Street
G.R.A. Ikeja
Lagos
Tel: +234(0) 807 219 1112, or
+234 (0) 80 2226 4059, or
+234 (0) 90 9215 6079

Email: IOM medical booking

1.2 Abuja
Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC)
International Organization for Migration (IOM)
No. 4, Buchannan Close, off Buchannan Crescent, off Amino Kano Crescent
Wuse 11
AbujaTel: +234(0) 807 219 1122, or
+234 (0) 80 9563 7898, or
+234 (0) 80 8522 1427

Email: IOM medical booking

2. Attending the clinic
You should contact the above approved clinic to book an appointment. You should make it clear that you need the test for a UK visa application. You can expect to get an appointment within a few days of your request. At busy times you may have to wait 10 days for an appointment, especially during the UK student visa peak season between June and September. We cannot arrange or prioritise appointments for you.

3. What you should bring with you
proof of identification, which contains your photograph, preferably your passport;
tuberculosis test fee; and
if you have had tuberculosis in the past or have any other lung disease you should provide details of your previous screening and, if possible, your medical notes and x-ray results.
If you would like an appointment with a female clinician, please inform the clinic when you schedule your appointment.

If you need to cancel your appointment you should contact the clinic and refer to their cancellation policy and procedure.

4. Test fees
The fee for tuberculosis screening is 130 US Dollars (or its equivalent in Naira). The fee will be payable in local currency at the prevailing exchange rate advised by the IOM. You will pay the IOM directly for the cost of your tuberculosis test. The cost of the test is in addition to the visa application fee.

The test fee does not cover treatment if you have tuberculosis.

ZaraOli: hi all. i have my maintenance fee in the bank already but intend to pay the school fees directly to the school by month end. so i want to know if i can book an appointment for the visa interview now and what do i fill in the details of how much fees i have paid or outstanding. my school has assured me that my CAS will reflect the fees once it is paid. I intend to book now to get an early interview date. thanks
When you pay fees, the school will update your CAS. My advice would be to pay then wait for your CAS to be issued. I don't think there is a long wait to get an appointment, you can get one the very next day...I think. The only issue is an increased waiting time because of demand, but you should be OK to get your visa before September if you apply July ending.

Money already paid to the tier 4 sponsor
188. If you can show that you have already paid all or some of your course fees to your Tier
4 sponsor before making your application, this amount can be taken away from the total
amount of money you will need to show.
189. If you can show that you have already paid all or some of your accommodation fees to
your Tier 4 sponsor before making your application, this amount will also be taken away
from the total amount of money you will need to show for living costs, however, the amount
taken away cannot exceed a maximum of £1,020, even if you have paid more than £1,020 in
advance for accommodation.
For example, if you are studying inside Inner London, you are on a course of more than 12
months, and you have paid your course fees in full and you have an established presence.
The amount of maintenance you would need to show would be £2,040 (£1,020 for 2
months), however, as you have already paid £1,020 to your University as a contribution
towards your accommodation, the amount you need to show is reduced to £1,020:
Amount of Maintenance - £2,040
Amount paid to Sponsor for accommodation - £1,020
Total maintenance they are required to show - £1,020.
This only applies if you will be staying in university or college arranged accommodation.
Documents needed to show money already paid to the tier 4 sponsor
195. Your sponsor can include details of the money you have already paid to them on your
CAS. If your Tier 4 sponsor has included details of money paid to them on your CAS, no
further documents are needed to show that this money has been paid. If you do not know if
your Tier 4 sponsor has included this information you will need to check this with your Tier
4 sponsor. Any money for fees and maintenance that are not shown on your CAS must be
shown in a different manner by you.
196. If your Tier 4 sponsor has not included details of the money you have already paid
on your CAS, you must send an original paper receipt issued by your UK Tier 4 sponsor
confirming that you have paid:
• all of your fees; or
• the amount that you have paid.

No. The money has to be in your account or your biological or adopted parent's account (with proof that they are your parent). If he pays your full fees then all you have to show is maintenance funds of 820 or 1020 pounds per month for 9 months(if your course is longer than 6 mnths)

mhoreh: please my uncle had been responsible for my education, he wants to pay full tuition from his acct, print out the transaction so that i can add it with his bank statements and use as supporting documents, since it would show he paid the fees from the same account we re presenting. he is not willing to transfer money cos of exchange rate, will this work pls

Though staying in the UK without papers is not ideal, however, you have to weigh your options. If you can go to school in the UK go ahead and do it and deal with the rest later.
There's nothing to weigh, do not ever stay in the UK illegally. It is not worth the mental, physical, emotional or monetary stress.

Of the 40 or so International Students that did their MSc in Computer Science with me, i think less than 5 were able to find something worth doing after the MSc.

The current anti-immigration stance of the government isn't helping. Even if the opportunities exist (and they do), companies would much rather give them to a UK or EU citizen first, just because of the wahala involved in sponsoring an international.

If you are looking for a place to settle, then I think the US or Canada is currently a better option for you. If you are looking for a great place to study in an expedited manner, UK all the way.

She said a lady friend approached her and asked if my mom should allow my younger sis to travel to italy and serve in a hair salon as a braider. That they will be responsible for her visa and paper works. I told my mum NO! And plainly explained that italy is a big base of prostitution cartels, that they lure unsuspecting girls into there trap and force them into the trade once the girls are safely on their hands. Now i need your help and advice, is my suggestion wrong? Can the proposed braiding be what they have in mind? Yes i would like to say my sis is abroad but not as a LovePeddler.
