I will break it down for you , give you a few books you can read and investigative journalist ,activist and bloggers you can follow. Be back in a moment .

You remember that guy in Tunisia who set himself on fire which was the catalyst to all the upheaval in the Middle East. That occurrence in isolation ,means absolutely nothing. But when combined to the increase in the price of wheat and other essentials in the lead up to the global recession , and the dictatorship in all the Arab countries, it becomes more apparent the kind of power global finance( Wall Street ) has on the globe.
Just before Lehman brothers fell , the masters of the universe already knew what was coming . mortgages having become toxic meant alternatives had to be found to make money( these guys only care about their end of the year multi billion dollars bonuses).
The investment banker moved massively into commodities, driving everything from crude oil , steel ,wheat , rice , cocoa etc , driving prices sky high and breaking the laws of demand and supply.
speculation.
People were buying and selling commodities(papers) without even as much as seeing it . Crude oil was being bought and traded within seconds of leaving the Derrick.

Typical transaction
Say , you buy oil for 1 naira. You sell same to me for N2 . Another person comes and buy from me for N3 , another N4,.......... N5 , N6............. Then you decide to buy the same oil from the 6th buyer for N20 because you can find some to buy it for 25.
Same oil being passed around without any value being added ,within a period of 24hrs.
Commodities were parked in warehouses , crude oil tankers were parked offshore just for speculation purposes.
Basically for buying and selling papers purposes. The selling of derivatives( useless mortgages based securities) or useless papers was what blew up the us economy.
You are essentially paying taxes to these banks . Their profits is your misery .
The U.S. government looked the other way because the bankers have congress and most parts of the U.S government on vice-like grip.
The crash
With the government incapable of handing tax- payers money directly to these banks , they had to do this in subtle ways.
This included allowing them to continue speculating and continue driving the price of commodities sky high, while suckers pay( maga trying play in a rigged market).
In other words , these US banks can bring down any individual ,company and country at anytime.
In Russia's case , very easy.simply play with their source of income (crude oil).
