debbie:Nnaa enyi I boola? I'm sure you'll pick it up with time. ![]() |
Dee OdenigboAroli, were e gaje! I zuru oke! debbie:Lol. Trans: My brother, it never ceases to please me whenever you list these your people's names for us. |
BuddahMonk:'bu uzo' in this context means 'comes first'. The proper meaning of that name would be '[My] chi (personal spirit/avatar) paves the way'. |
OdenigboAroli:Nwa mama, I guisiwara anyi umu irigiri ava inyi a, o dii mgbe o naghi atoje m uto. |
I honestly don't know why people can never mind their business. I mean, what concerns you with the way this man lives his own life? So what if he has tattoos and piercings? Didn't our not-so-distant ancestors decorate their bodies with uri and uvie (camwood) tattoos as well? Didn't people slash their faces with ichi markings as a sign of nobility? The funny thing is that despite however you all may feel about him, the dude has been of immense benefit to his community (Ugwuta), and that's all that matters. Unlike many of us, he's used his popularity and influence to bring about change, organization, and awareness to the many problems affecting youth and young adults in Ugwuta and is rightfully a philanthropist. But I'm sure that no matter what this guy does, the world can never be placated. |
^^^ Done. I've relocated the thread to the appropriate section. |
ChinenyeN and Radoillo, well done. I've been trailing this discussion since it began and although it may only be two pages in, I've learned so much already. I'm a bit occupied at the moment so I won't able to contribute/address your statement right now, ChinenyeN, but I have been slowly nitpicking those hefty PDFs! Para nni gawa! |
The first European-built storey building or the first European-built chimney building? Last last time I checked numerous Nigerian cultures have their respective multi-story archaeological traditions. |
Umu ibe, unu emeka. I've done some research and have pinpointed the phrase to the Old Bende region. Perhaps our sister Gboliwe could confirm this for me? ![]() It's also interesting how there seems to be a pattern involving the phrase 'I mere/mena ańaa/aghaa' in several communities stretching from Nsuka to heart of southern Igbo. |
Ihuomadinihu:It's certainly in decline, but there are a few artists that still employ it in their music. Akunwafor Obiligbo (a native of Nteje) still makes use of it to date as well as a few other egwu ekpili musicians from other parts of Anambra. I've also heard and seen its use amongst local music groups in Ikwereland, Ngwaland and other parts of southern Ali Igbo. |
Gboliwe:Agu nwami! Asi Naijiria onwa bu nmadi, mbu I buru e lol. Jookwa wo. |
Gboliwe:Nwanne m nwami, o n'ezi? |
pazienza:M werela ochi dorisie akuku m. Unu ajogbuo onwe unu! ![]() |
Do the Urhobo call the same practice which the Igbo refer to as 'omugwo' by the same name as well? |
Cyberknight:Hmm. Really? That's quite interesting. I thought "I mena kp'ole" was already the standard greeting in the Owere/Ngor-Okpala/Urata area. Where exactly is your area, if I may ask? |
Which areas typically greet "I mere anaa?" (centralized: I mere otu ole) or used the term 'anaa'? |
Dee BuddahMonk, I biaruola? Kaa, were oche. "Ohia na uzo amarala" - ya bunu na yabu ihe doro onye obula anya. "Ewu eriela m igu n'isi" - ya bunu ihe di egwu n'ekwesighi ime mekwasiri madu. We call it 'agbara' or 'ibie' in the Aro dialect of Igbo. |
Gboliwe:The fact that TA Orji is now going to be counted among those that represent us in Abuja kills me even more. |
O di ngeni ihe ka nmadi ji isi koro? ![]() I find it disappointing how this past election seemed to be nothing more than a display of the blinding effects of extreme chauvinism. I'm yet to understand how and why certain political camps could ignore PDP's 16 years of failure in our beloved Abia state and twist the entire election into an "Ngwa vs Non-Ngwa" affair. I mean, I get the fact that southern Abia has been agitating for governorship for some time now, but is that the reason why we should ignore PDPs failures and sell ourselves back into the hands of rogues such as TA Orji and Orji Uzo Kalu, the very people who are responsible for our state's deplorable state? I don't know why people can't seem to reason that this "na my broda be dat" mentality will get us nowhere. Since Ikpeazu is an Ngwa man (as was Alex Otti), all of a sudden the problems of Aba and the greater Ngwa people are going to be fixed? Upon all of the support and praise Goodluck Jonathan received from the East, can we name one single solid thing that he has done for us? Ana ekwu nke ana ekwu abia sikwa na TA Orji arigorola okwa senator. Ihe a gbara m harii. ![]() |
Radoillo:Ah, I see. I completely understand what you mean. Thank you again. |
Since we're still on the matter, does anyone know the meaning of the names 'Ezeoke' and 'Nsofo'? I believe someone once translated the latter as 'taboo of Ofo day', but I don't find that particularly satisfactory. What do you guys think? Ama m na ana m ajukari ajuju, mana onye ajuju adighi efu uzo. |
bigfrancis21:Deede, ka I siri were nwayo kowazie ya ka o wee doo m anya ofuma atogbuola m. I meela! |
Radoillo:Oh wow. It was actually "Igba ncha" that I heard, but after searching the term through the nairaland search tool, I ran across both terms and considering their contexts, your translation seems very appropriate. Deede, I meela. |
Nde nk'anyi, what's the meaning of the phrase "igba ncha"? |
These replies, sef. |
