Leopards

Leopards are the feared lords of the forest. Enclosed in their slender bodies are grace, elegance, and potency. Their mystical body patterns have evoked the respect and awe of numerous African societies, granting them reverence and significance in the religious practices of Africa's forest peoples.

CultureRe: What Is Culture To You? How Do You Define It? by odumchi(mod):
There's a difference between culture in Nigeria and culture in the diaspora.

In Nigeria a cultural event is an event in which people of the same sub-ethnic group congregate and practice their tradition. However in the diaspora (especially in the United States), the gathering of members of a particular ethnic group (for whatever reason) usually passes as a cultural event.

Nonetheless, [in this case] the culture and traditions of the Igbo are still well and alive.

CultureAn Encyclopedia Of Language Learning Resources by odumchi(mod):
It's frustrating to have a desire to do something and, at the same time, lack the means by which to accomplish it. I believe that the hardest part of learning a language is knowing where to begin. Living outside of the immediate area where a language is spoken, puts us, as learners, at an immediate disadvantage. To fill this void, most of us use books, audio-tapes, CD-Roms, and anything else that we can get our hands on.

However, I've noticed that there is a need for a consolidation of such resources [on Nairaland] so that all who wish to embark on the language learning journey can know where to start. I decided to create this thread so that we can post links to any language learning resources (preferably free) that we may have and help, not only others, but ourselves.

Either you subscribe to it in which case you must be prepared to back it up or you creep away if you do not subscribe.
What is clear is you are backing down which is fine.We can confine the claim to the garbage heap where it belongs.
Create a special thread for this. Let's avoid derailing this one.

aribisala0: I doubt very much that Goods are "not housed within a building" at Onitsha market I have never been there.I have been to Ariaria though, many times.Goods are certainly housed in shops which I believe are "buildings"

The other question which you failed to answer is how you define largeness. Let me remind you of the latin aphorism Ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat"he who makes a claims must prove it not he who challenges"
You claimed not only that ONICHA ia the largest but even supplied a ranking of 1st,2nd 3rd etc so we need to know what are the parameters used to define "LARGENESS".
At any rate maybe Balogun Market should NOT be on your list of "Open-air markets" because goods are certainly housed in buildings.
You should take this up with the people that ranked Onicha so, not me.
BusinessRe: Onitsha, The Commercial Capital Of West Africa by odumchi: 8:56pm On Jul 27, 2012
aribisala0: Mr Odumchi since you quote me,I will respond and i hope you will be kind enough to answer.I really do not know what you mean by "open-air market" is this a technical term?
Kindly supply a definition of that term otherwise I don't see how one can make sense of your claim

Secondly For the purpose of our discussion here Please give a "working" definition of largeness as far as markets particularly open-air markets are concerned.
Cheers
An open-air market is a market in which goods are displayed externally: not housed within a building.

I'm not going to argue anything technical. Besides, it's not my claim. I'm only telling you how Onicha is recognized (as supported by that book). If you refuse to accept it, or decide to think otherwise, it's not my business.
BusinessRe: Onitsha, The Commercial Capital Of West Africa by odumchi: 8:14pm On Jul 27, 2012
aribisala0: Large Markets such as ONITSHA main market will be a thing of the past for obvious reasons. It is a fragmented market = several owners with few synergies between them and so its traders lack "market power" that enables them to negotiate or even bully manufacturers. e.g they cannot offer any customer service, product warranties etc such as is seen elsewhere and even taken as rights . If there is consolidation with fewer large players e.g Wal-Mart sole traders will be forced out of business as has happened in virtually every so called developed country. Those who think internet shopping is far off in Nigeria are mistaken.I predict a boom in less than 10 years and this will be dominated by corporate players who leverage their size ,internationality and logistic competences.
Of course the Onitsha players can prosper or even dominate any emerging scenario if they learn new tricks i.e forming alliances/corporate entities and prioritizing customer satisfaction which will mean subordinating old instincts/habits we shall see. hmm
eg if walmart or such like were to enter the Nigerian market few players can challenge them and they can sell virtually any product line.
In summary having a large market might once have been a thing of pride but the world is changing and in an era of internet shopping large markets are a liabilty not and asset.
http://books.google.com/books?id=ks53FgVNjLkC&pg=PA57&dq=onitsha+main+market&hl=en&sa=X&ei=fecSULTAFMHW0QGyh4GACA&ved=0CEYQ6AEwBA

The largest open-air markets in Nigeria are found in (in order from largest to smallest): Onicha (Onicha Main Market), Aba (Ariaria Market), Lagos (Balogun Market), and Kano.

ChinenyeN: Next, memory.
Memory already exists in Central Igbo as 'echiche'. Both thought and memory are referred to as 'echiche'.

Ex:
Cheta ihe ahu - remember that thing.
Chee maka onwe gi - think about yourself.
Echiche gi o di nma - is your memory alright?
CultureRe: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by odumchi(mod): 7:01pm On Jul 27, 2012
'Ikpo ekpo' means (at least in my dialect) busy; active; hot; bustling.

'Ikwo ekwo' means 'to flow' [like a river]. We say 'nmiri na ekwo-ekwo' meaning "the water is flowing".

These seem to adequately express the idea of traffic.
BusinessRe: Onitsha, The Commercial Capital Of West Africa by odumchi: 6:30pm On Jul 27, 2012
The economic significance of Onicha in Nigeria and West Africa shouldn't be overlooked.

Since pre-colonial times, Onicha has been the city where boys turn into men and where money is made.

I miss this thread since it's very useful. Let's revive it.

ifyalways: Imela.

@All,anyone ever heard of "agbiri or egbiri" for utara akpu?My paternal grandmom always used 'egburi/egbiri/agbiri'
I don't know about 'agbiri/egbiri' but I know 'igburu'. 'Igburu' is the Ututu word for 'cassava'.

ChinenyeN: Noun.
I guess I should start denoting parts of speech then.
'Traffic' the noun can be 'ekpokpo uzo' (ex: uzo o na ekpo-ekpo?), 'ekwokwo uzo' (the same way that nmiri na ekwo ekwo), or 'ejiji uzo' (ex: uzo o jiri eji; meaning ''is the road backed up?'').
CultureRe: What's The Difference Between A Language And A Dialect???? by odumchi(mod): 5:00pm On Jul 27, 2012
A language is a well developed form of communication that is shared by members of a particular group, whereas a dialect is a form of variation that occurs within that language based on several reasons.

One reason variation occurs is because of geographical proximity. For example, a people settled on two banks of a large river. Prior to their settlement, they spoke the same dialect of the same language. However, many years later, since they failed to cross over to interact with each other, their language experienced independent growth on both banks of the river and ultimately formed two different dialects [of the same language]. When the people finally crossed over to interact for the first time, they noticed that they understood most of each other's speech.

Another way a dialect can be formed is by external influence. For example, a people (who speak a singular dialect of the same language) settled in a valley and were bordered by another people (who speak a totally different language) to their north. Those people who bordered these strange people began interacting with them, while their counterparts to the south didn't. Over a series of years, the northern half of the people started speaking differently from the southerners (although they still spoke the same language). The southern people then realized that they could only understand bits of the speech of their northern counterparts. This signals the development of a new dialect within their language.
