Obiagu1: Periwinkle :: Isam

Funny thing about this is that at my place, we call this 'isam' just like our Ibibio neighbors. I always thought that other Igbo people called it 'mfi' and that 'isam' was an Ibibio loan word.

I'm astonished to find out that our people call it the same thing.

ekt_bear: Nice, interesting post.

Another thing I wish Seun would do is to make his "friend" graph publicly available.

There are some interesting things you can do, Facebook-style with it, I think...would be fun to play around with.

Anyway, at topic...obviously Yoruba. In fact, your favorite Yoruba's favorite Yoruba grin
Funny. cheesy

What friend graph are you speaking of?

egift: If the FG of NL need such data, they should add it on profile field and make it mandatory and ask members to go update their profiles.

You guys should stop dividing this Nation. If I say something now all the sycophants will come out in their numbers to hurl insults. But you guys should stop it.
So knowing one's ethnicity is now dividing the country? na wa o.

Odenigbo Aroli: I really need to buy an Igbo dictionary; anybody knows where I can get one ?
I found this dictionary somewhere online: http://books.google.com/books?id=8JDg94vBNLcC&pg=PA63&lpg=PA63&dq=osu+bat+igbo&source=bl&ots=EsusrgPe8X&sig=JizZBHFQh8S-c1DB3kLwpW0l3W4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=6Iu2T9zFDaGt6AGA2oXHCg&ved=0CFQQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q&f=false

Although it's only a demo, it can still be useful. If you live in the US, you can buy a dictionary in any online bookstore like Barnes & Nobles or Amazon.com.

dubem3: names of things as relates to dialect is one subject i have learnt not to argue over. If a man says 'this is what we call it', let it be so. What state are you from? Looks to me like its ANAMBRA, i've been oppurtuned to travel around the state and igbo land a little bit and believe me, within ANAMBRA state, i'll take you to a place where 'come' is not 'Bia' and where you will not here a single thing. Yet they are Igbo and Thats what they say they speak.

You may also want to know that i know horse to be 'inyinya'
i agree with you on 'aghu' learnt its tasty When roasted or smoked grin
so leave the people of Arochukwu alone.
You're correct my brother. You guys are also right regarding aghu which is actually a small relative of the crocodile. I usually associate it with alligator, but I've admitted my mistake. I think the closest comparison to aghu would be a caiman (which only exists in the Americas).

@Obiagu
Thanks for your pictures, they're greatly appreciated. Let's drop this argument of animal names, we should never argue over Igbo dialects.
PoliticsNairaland 2012 Ethnic Census by odumchi(op):
The FG of Nairaland would like to know the population of its peoples inorder to properly allocate funds and services to the appropriate LGAs and states. Vote, and let your people be counted!

Lol, on a serious note, this is only for research and documentation purposes. I'm currently carrying out a study here on Nairaland and would appreciate it if everyone kindly voted and indicated their ethnicity. I'll try and add as many ethnicities as possible, and once again, I apologize if your people are not listed. cool

If your parents are of different ethnicites, kindly choose one. The link to last year's successful census can be found here: https://www.nairaland.com/725814/nairaland-2011-ethnic-census

EducationQuestions For American-based College Students by odumchi(op): 3:50am On May 20, 2012
I myself am a highschooler, and very soon I'll start college apps and things like that. I'd like to know what schools (colleges or universities) you American-based Nairalanders are attending and your grades upon graduating highschool.

What were your SAT/ACT scores?
What was your GPA?
How difficult was it for you to make it into where you're currently attending?
Are you on any type of scholarship/loan/grant?

Thanks in advance.
CareerAny Nairalanders In These Career Paths? by odumchi(op):
Hey, I'm a secondary schooler and I'm still in the process of thinking of possible career paths for myself. As of now, I find myself interested in studies like; Finance, Foreign Relations, African Studies, and Linguistics. I am wondering if there are any Nairalanders currently working in any of these fields or if anyone has some information on them.

Some questions I'd like to ask are:
What are you currently working as?
How's the experience?
How long did you study?
What's a normal day of work for you like?
What's the availability of your job?
How's the salary?

I'd be glad if someone could help me out. Thanks.

This was isn't bad at all.
In many parts of pre-colonial Igboland, when a man died, his brother would marry his wife and inherit all of his property.

Obiagu1: You people should stop writing what you don't know. If you're not sure, don't write it and when you're corrected, try to correct your post(s) to the right one(s) instead of confusing people.

Igbo have no name for tiger, we never had tigers in Alaigbo.
Peacock is not torotoro.
Kite is not egbe.
Alligator is not aghu.
Ant is not ijere.
Camel is not jaki.
Why not just accept the fact that people's dialects differ. There is not a universal word for everything in Igbo. Where I come from alligator is known as aghu, kite as egbe, and ant as ijere. And I'm pretty sure the central Igbo for kite is egbe. As for camel, I purposely left it as jaki since no one came up with an alternative for it. If you want it removed, I can do so.

We never had tigers in Igboland, true, but we never had horses and we still have a name for them. Like I said earlier, agu means 'leopard' but it was extended to mean 'tiger'. In fact, agu is just a term that refers to any fierce forest-dwelling cat.

For egbe meaning kite, refer to 1:04 in this video and you will see someone refering to kite as egbe.

Onlytruth: lol, I told them that sometime ago. undecided
I don't blame them though, because most of the posters here are not educated enough, especially in international politics.
I told them that the UN and other World agencies would NEVER allow a situation whereby more than 4 (I even say 3 cool ) countries would storm them from Nigeria. My immediate hunch is that Nigeria will likely divide into THREE countries. The world bodies can stomach three countries. Some of the reasons Biafra failed the first time was because those bodies feared some of the proposals being made here. When the British was ruling Nigeria, the most they could divide Nigeria was into three. Notice that they never divided it again till they left in 1960, and things were working! undecided

Like I've said a number of times, the British are very thorough and SERIOUS people. When you read about what Lord Lugard said about different Nigerian peoples, you would see that he understood Nigeria as far back as 1914 more than most Nigerians today. He knew which group constituted a perennial problem, and which groups were serious. The amalgamation was a DELIBERATE act, not a reflex one.
So, all these people expecting to have tiny countries carved out of current Nigeria are just ignorant. It ain't ever happening. cheesy

kettykin: @ poster , i love your Hypothesis , it shows we still have intellient Nigerian who think .

How ever a Break up of Nigeria could trigger another struggle between Britain, Russia, China , USA , Arab world, Isreal and france . These World Powers Understand what is at stake. The Russians / Arab world will defnitely come in to stamp thier authority in the North and arm them with weapons and mercanries. the USA will Use the UN to Diplomatically stop the Humanitarian Crises that will ensue but and also be making behind the scene move to secure its oil installation.
Britain will rally the whole Europe as Usual to stop the the carnage in some parts of Nigeria. Isreal and france will follow there traditional ally the East.

Lagos Abuja and Delta will be Hot spots, where Spontaneous launch of rockets and missiles will be carried out to exert authoritarian control.
I guess the Biafrans hvae learn enough lessons not to make mistake of the 60s and will do everything to court the Camerounian , the Niger deltans and give olive branch to Benue , Kogi , Taraba and Adamawa.
Thank you very much. I just wish that people could see the truth.
