Obiagu1: Periwinkle :: IsamFunny thing about this is that at my place, we call this 'isam' just like our Ibibio neighbors. I always thought that other Igbo people called it 'mfi' and that 'isam' was an Ibibio loan word. I'm astonished to find out that our people call it the same thing. |
afam4eva: Add the following:They're all there except for the Ogoni. |
ekt_bear: Nice, interesting post.Funny. ![]() What friend graph are you speaking of? |
egift: If the FG of NL need such data, they should add it on profile field and make it mandatory and ask members to go update their profiles. So knowing one's ethnicity is now dividing the country? na wa o. |
armyofone: ummm, i miss udala esp during raining season when they are sweet. Is it the song that goes: "Nne'mo nye'mu udara'm o, saram, nne nye mu udara mo, saram?" |
Slizbeat: Tnx 4 d answer. @ify, no b xo o0, abeg wahs train and bike(okada) in igbo?Train is ugbo-igwe or ugbo-tracki while bicycle/okada is igwe. |
Areosapien: Why is there no "NURTW" on your list? What is "NURTW"? |
afam4eva: Are those the only ethnic groups in Nigeria? Please let's add some more especially those that have more than a million people. It would be nice if you suggested some. |
Odenigbo Aroli: Tiger=odumDoesn't the phrase odum n'egbu agu contradict that? |
Odenigbo Aroli: I really need to buy an Igbo dictionary; anybody knows where I can get one ?I found this dictionary somewhere online: http://books.google.com/books?id=8JDg94vBNLcC&pg=PA63&lpg=PA63&dq=osu+bat+igbo&source=bl&ots=EsusrgPe8X&sig=JizZBHFQh8S-c1DB3kLwpW0l3W4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=6Iu2T9zFDaGt6AGA2oXHCg&ved=0CFQQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q&f=false Although it's only a demo, it can still be useful. If you live in the US, you can buy a dictionary in any online bookstore like Barnes & Nobles or Amazon.com. dubem3: names of things as relates to dialect is one subject i have learnt not to argue over. If a man says 'this is what we call it', let it be so. What state are you from? Looks to me like its ANAMBRA, i've been oppurtuned to travel around the state and igbo land a little bit and believe me, within ANAMBRA state, i'll take you to a place where 'come' is not 'Bia' and where you will not here a single thing. Yet they are Igbo and Thats what they say they speak. You're correct my brother. You guys are also right regarding aghu which is actually a small relative of the crocodile. I usually associate it with alligator, but I've admitted my mistake. I think the closest comparison to aghu would be a caiman (which only exists in the Americas). @Obiagu Thanks for your pictures, they're greatly appreciated. Let's drop this argument of animal names, we should never argue over Igbo dialects. |
The FG of Nairaland would like to know the population of its peoples inorder to properly allocate funds and services to the appropriate LGAs and states. Vote, and let your people be counted! Lol, on a serious note, this is only for research and documentation purposes. I'm currently carrying out a study here on Nairaland and would appreciate it if everyone kindly voted and indicated their ethnicity. I'll try and add as many ethnicities as possible, and once again, I apologize if your people are not listed. ![]() If your parents are of different ethnicites, kindly choose one. The link to last year's successful census can be found here: https://www.nairaland.com/725814/nairaland-2011-ethnic-census |
Odunnu: So whats udara? The 'udara' doesn't have an equivalent in English (atleast on that I know of). It looks like this: https://informafrica.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/agbalumo.jpg |
I myself am a highschooler, and very soon I'll start college apps and things like that. I'd like to know what schools (colleges or universities) you American-based Nairalanders are attending and your grades upon graduating highschool. What were your SAT/ACT scores? What was your GPA? How difficult was it for you to make it into where you're currently attending? Are you on any type of scholarship/loan/grant? Thanks in advance. |
Hey, I'm a secondary schooler and I'm still in the process of thinking of possible career paths for myself. As of now, I find myself interested in studies like; Finance, Foreign Relations, African Studies, and Linguistics. I am wondering if there are any Nairalanders currently working in any of these fields or if anyone has some information on them. Some questions I'd like to ask are: What are you currently working as? How's the experience? How long did you study? What's a normal day of work for you like? What's the availability of your job? How's the salary? I'd be glad if someone could help me out. Thanks. |
EzeUche: Long Live Igboland!Ezeuche, i ka no ndu? Ndaa aga i mere? |
This was isn't bad at all. In many parts of pre-colonial Igboland, when a man died, his brother would marry his wife and inherit all of his property. |
Obiagu1: You people should stop writing what you don't know. If you're not sure, don't write it and when you're corrected, try to correct your post(s) to the right one(s) instead of confusing people. Why not just accept the fact that people's dialects differ. There is not a universal word for everything in Igbo. Where I come from alligator is known as aghu, kite as egbe, and ant as ijere. And I'm pretty sure the central Igbo for kite is egbe. As for camel, I purposely left it as jaki since no one came up with an alternative for it. If you want it removed, I can do so. We never had tigers in Igboland, true, but we never had horses and we still have a name for them. Like I said earlier, agu means 'leopard' but it was extended to mean 'tiger'. In fact, agu is just a term that refers to any fierce forest-dwelling cat. For egbe meaning kite, refer to 1:04 in this video and you will see someone refering to kite as egbe. http://www.youtube.com/v/l7xLAfKQZBA |
Onlytruth: lol, I told them that sometime ago.Eze, ha na acho gi Ebe a: https://www.nairaland.com/934802/eze-ndi-igbo-nairaland-cultural Ga gosi ha onwe gi. |

ifyalways: @Odumchi,do Aros use nkasi for cocoyam?Thats quite something,Onichans do too but i think the central Igbo is ede.Yes we call it 'nkasi' too, lol. Oops I made a mistake, I was referring to garden egg instead of eggplant. |
On a serious note... Is that even Uche? |

0key: tortoise~ mbeI looked up the history of the word 'torotoro' and found out it originally meant peacock/pheasant but was extended to mean turkey. You're right. My apologies. |
