No one has ever created anything. People study enough to combine existing substances or extract them from naturally occurring sources. It sounds big when you lack the knowledge and knowhow

I wasn't that good in Chemistry in my secondary school days because the foundation wasn't Ok. I had a chemistry teacher in SS1 that I never liked, he was hash and had a poor teaching method

Even industrial processes have no big deal. The products we import have no big deal in their manufacturing process. What matters is the will power, the confidence. Giving the kids that at early age makes a great difference.

Well done teacher. But the amount of Gas used to heat to sea water to dryness is more expensive than the salt they said they couldn't buy. Aside the fact that they have learnt what Evaporation is and the cationic and anionic test for the salt is the Pinnacle of the learning but say they don't have money to buy salt that's why they heat sea water to dryness is Fallacious and doesn't hold water. A group of SS2 students in one of the schools I visit to teach Chemistry came excitedly, "Sir, we have produced our own salt. We would not buy salt again in the market."

I taught them in SS1 SEPARATION TECHNIQUES that you can obtain salt (NaCl) by evaporating sea water to dryness.

The students now secretly arranged for one of them to visit Ibeno water and get sample of the seawater which they evaporated to dryness and here comes our locally made salt.

Qualitative Analysis: The salt produced on exposure to air was found to be deliquescent - attracts water from the atmosphere to dissolve itself. It dissolves completely in water. The solution of the salt gave white precipitate when tested with solution of silver nitrate, the precipitate was insoluble in nitric acid (confirmatory test for chlorides)

This indeed is very rewarding as it has been my expectation to help this young minds to begin now to figure out ways of harnessing our natural resources.

While I will continue with the work of purifying the product at my private technical center, I have advised them that the salt need to be purified to remove carbonates and other non-sodium halides etc.

We would in the present state use the salt as preservative for our emulsion paint, we would use it for laboratory test for chlorides and to demonstrate removal of hardness of water (water softening by ion exchange).

My philosophy of high school chemistry is to let them understand the theory, carry out the laboratory practicals, and apply the knowledge to do mini projects.

When you are using gas cookers, the chemistry of the process goes thus:

Propane + Oxygen = Carbon dioxide + water vapour + flame.
Carbon dioxide and water vapour are colorless, odorless, and harmless to humans.

However, when you use charcoal stove, the chemistry of the process takes this form:

Carbon + Oxygen = Carbon monoxide + Carbon dioxide + Flame.

Both carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are colorless. Carbon dioxide is harmless but Carbon monoxide is highly poisonous (an asphixiant)

Charcoal stove does not smoke, it is cheap to operate, and cooks fast, but must be used outdoors or where ventilation system is available.

Before someone is being approached to assist a research, it shows that he/she has specific abilities that are required to complete a research task. Among such abilities are:
knowledge of computer software for data processing, data analysis, process modelling, and process simulation.
apt in searching for materials online through research platforms like academia.edu (of which I am a member).
knowledge of solving scientific and engineering problems from first principle.
understanding of laboratory procedure.
versatility in chemistry of processes.
understanding of procedure to fabricate physical models of process equipment.
A research assistance does not take the place of the supervisors. Supervisors are experts and remain the final authority on the work. A research assistant works with you to correct observations made by your supervisors.
You can talk more freely and in relaxed manner with the assistance. He checks your work, corrects, gives his input, assists with any of the above mentioned asset, before you give the work to your supervisor. Works with you again after your supervisor has identified areas that need revisiting. He is with you on the computer, in the lab, and at the fabrication workshop to assist.
Research fraud is when you meet someone to do a research for you. When you drop a research topic and the person finishes the work and send ready-made chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 to you. This should be highly discouraged and I am always not available for such malpractice.

It should not just end with replacing DPR with NURC. Burning issues that PIA was mearnt to address in the area of regulation include: 1. Autonomy of the regulatory body. 2. Making the regulatory body measure up with its counterpart like API (American Petroleum Institute). 3. Dicotomy of upstream and downstream regulation of the petorleum sector.

I would love to know how NAFDAC arrived at this conclusion. How did they test for presence of the formalin? Can they make the said frozen chicken available to independent analysts to confirm this claim? That you regulate doesn't mean you should be believed on every side.
