The Senior Special Assistant to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, has reacted to the World Bank Report on Nigeria’s worsening poverty rate.

Speaking in a statement in Abuja on Friday, he warned that Nigeria’s worsening poverty rate is an indication of how low the country’s economy has sunk since President Bola Tinubu took office.

Shaibu argued that the current economic hardship is no accident, but rather the “direct outcome of poorly conceived and harshly implemented policies.”

He cited the “abrupt removal of fuel subsidies” and the “chaotic devaluation of the naira,” asserting that these measures were “executed without adequate safeguards for the Nigerian people.”

According to the statement, the administration’s reliance on abstract macroeconomic indicators ignores the “far harsher reality” faced by the citizenry.

Shaibu noted that “food prices have spiralled out of control, inflation has wiped out incomes, small businesses are collapsing, and millions more Nigerians are being pushed into extreme poverty.”

He described the government’s approach as “economic shock therapy imposed on a vulnerable population.”

“A government that presides over a situation where the majority of its people are poor, yet insists that progress is being made, has lost both moral authority and economic direction.”

He said the administration is “dangerously disconnected from the lived realities of its citizens.”

In contrast to the current “policy experiments,” the statement noted that Atiku Abubakar offers an alternative “rooted in experience, pragmatism, and compassion.”

Shaibu detailed a vision in which “reform must be carefully sequenced, not recklessly imposed,” and “social protection must be real, targeted, and transparent, not symbolic.”

He said the Waziri Adamawa’s proposed strategy focuses on stabilising the economy through the coordination of fiscal and monetary policy while “rebuilding productivity through support for small businesses, agriculture, and industry.”

PDP didn’t zone its presidential ticket to any region, it was open to all. Every aspirant had a fair shot.

Crisis Hits APC As New Factional Chairman Emerges

A fresh leadership crisis has erupted within the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the emergence of a new faction led by political commentator and activist, Alhaja Hafsatu Danladi.

Danladi, who declared herself chairperson of a faction of the ruling party, claimed to have assumed leadership amid what she described as a deepening internal crisis rocking the APC.

In a statement, she asserted that her faction had formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of its existence and was seeking the derecognition of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) currently led by Nentawe Yilwatda.

“I, Alhaja Hafsatu Danladi, hereby assert my position as the true and authentic Chairperson of the APC,” she said, insisting that the current leadership structure lacks legitimacy.

Danladi further disclosed plans to approach a Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge the legality of the existing party leadership, noting that the move was aimed at restoring due process and internal democracy within the APC.

She also revealed that her legal action would seek an order compelling INEC to withdraw recognition of the NWC under Yilwatda, which she described as an “illegitimate structure” overseeing the party’s affairs.

According to her, the step became necessary to safeguard the integrity of the party and ensure adherence to the rule of law.

The development adds a new twist to the ongoing internal wrangling within the APC, raising concerns about unity and stability in the build-up to future electoral contests.

Mr Tinubu has been accused of acting as mourner-in-chief instead of the commander-in-chief of Nigeria amid insurgency.

President Bola Tinubu has abdicated his role as the commander-in-chief of the country and has turned himself into the mourner-in-chief as violent non-state actors sweep across the country with impunity, says Nigeria’s major opposition party.

Specifically, Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress, excoriated Mr Tinubu for failing to protect innocent civilians from violent attacks by bandits and terrorists.

“Nigeria needs a real commander-in-chief, not a chief mourner,” Mr Abdullahi said in a statement on Tuesday on X.

The ADC statement listed six occasions when Mr Tinubu condemned killings and repeatedly promised to bring down the perpetrators while killings persisted.

“Since May 2023, President Bola Tinubu has turned ‘never again’ into a template response to insecurity and the killings of Nigerians. Every massacre under his watch. Every abduction under his failed leadership. Same script. Same lines. Same outcome,” Mr Abdullahi said, citing Mr Tinubu’s response to various attacks in Kwara, Kebbi, Benue, Plateau, and other parts of the country.

He added, “Six different tragedies. Six presidential promises. Six presidential failures. Zero presidential results.”

Lamenting the wave of killings during the Easter period, Mr Abdullahi said, “And then Easter came. April 5–6, 2026 — Kaduna. Borno. Plateau. Benue. Churches attacked. Villages raided. Security forces ambushed. Families buried.

“At this point, hearing ‘enough is enough’ is no longer a statement of reassurance; it is a declaration of helplessness and surrender.”

The presidency did not immediately respond to Mr Abdullahi’s criticisms of the president
