Direct your anger to the people that are always calling the strike:ASUU. They will still strike again next year and still get paid for doing no work. It has be one a habit
Why won't they strike when a professor that has worked for close to 30 years earns around 350k
Bro that pay doesn't make sense sincerely!
There was never a time Nigerian governments are interested in education.
Go to neighbouring African countries and see how they provide loans for indigent students, work and study, e.t.c
Come to our labs and see rats, outdated equipments.
Please let's call a spade a spade!
Nothing happening is ASUU'S fault.
That's how it started in primary and secondary schools, now the private sector has taken over those ones. When you send your child to govt primary or secondary school these days you seem like a joker!
A graduate teaching in these govt schools earns 38k in my state. Imagine? What can he do with it bro??
And you're expected to work continuously morning till evening.
I CAN ONLY SAY THE GOVT HAVE SUCCEEDED IN BRAINWASHING US NOT TO SEE THE REALITY IN THESE THINGS!
They need people to pressure them, I wonder what will happen if ASUU has kept quiet as you guys wanted!
A govt that proposed 300k minimum school fees in 2017 and ASUU refused. Today everybody is blaiming ASUU
It is well!

Education / FG Prays Court To Order ASUU To End Strike by ogaontop(m): 7:25pm On Sep 12, 2022
The Federal government on Monday urged the National Industrial Court to order the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its seven months strike. Joined as a claimant in the matter is the Minster of Education, with the President of ASUU as sole defendant.
The matter which came up before Justice Polycarp Hamman brought by Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige on behalf of the federal government, by way of referral is praying the court to order ASUU to resume academic activities, amongst other prayers. When the matter slated for mention came up, Mr Ebunolu Adegoruwa, SAN, informed the court that he was representing Socio- Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and that he had filed a suit on the same subject matter before the same court.
He also stated that in the suit NICN/ABJ/269/2022, SERAP is the claimant with the federal government as the defendant.
He therefore proceeded to apply that the extant suit be consolidated and SERAP be joined in the suit as a defendant, instead of multiply suits on the same matter before the same court.
Counsel to the claimant, Mr T.A Gazali, SAN, in response said the application was premature and added that there was no need for SERAP to pray to be joined in a suit orally in a matter that did not have its name on the causelist.
Mr Femi Falana, SAN, counsel to ASUU in his response informed the court that both counsel had informed him on Monday that they both were filing some papers.
Falana in addition urged the court to step down the matter to enable both counsel to file their papers and then return at a later date after he would have responded to the claimant’s process
Adegoruwa replied that the defendant had not denied the existence of the suit SERAP filed and served on them.
Gazali on his part also informed the court that his process will be filed Monday and Falana said he would need three days to reply to the process.
The judge in his ruling adjourned the matter until Friday, for further mention.
He also directed that the claimant should file, serve his process, the defendant to also file and serve his response before the adjourned date.
Hamman in addition ruled that SERAP’s application for be joined in the suit was premature.
The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the suit filed by the claimant is also seeking the court to give the matter an accelerated hearing in order to bring the dispute to an end.
The claimant also in the instrument of referral is praying the court to: “Inquire into the legality or otherwise of the on-going prolonged strike by ASUU leadership and members which had continued even after apprehension by the Minister of Labour and Employment.
“Interpret in its entirety the provisions of Section 18, LFN 2004 especially as it applies to cessation of strike once a trade dispute is apprehended by the Minister of Labour end Employment and conciliation is on-going”.
Various talks between the parties on different occasions concerning the ongoing strike had not yielded any result, hence the referral of the matter to the court.(NAN)

Chief Eric Umeofia, of erisco tomatoes is a better businessman than Obi, if he was contesting for president, i will vote for him 100 times, unfortunately, he is not a politician but a pure businessman who supports local production
Tinubu and Atiku that lives in Dubai what do they produce locally? People that will have headache and rush abroad!
Or Shettima that was the Governor when BH took over so many communities in Borno
In your stale understanding, a good business man means producing locally whether profitable or not?
Why are many multinational companies leaving Nigeria?
Why are many US companies relocating their production lines to China few years ago before Trump came in?
Or maybe you feel tomato and ketchup are the same since they are both red in colour
Or because tomato is used in making ketchup?

People perish for lack of knowledge!!!
Edit: Get your facts right next time, just confirmed that your Erisco shut down production since your Buhari came in!!

Education / Re: FG Drags ASUU To Industrial Court, Says Negotiations Have Failed by ogaontop(m): 4:58pm On Sep 11, 2022
JJuanMiguel:

FG employed ASUU,
The universities also belong to FG.

So far, FG have increased the salaries by some percentage and promised to include the next batch of revitalization fund in the next year budget.

But ASUU have so far turned down these offers, but always quick to lament that they've not been given any offer.

The case is going to court, it's going to end with the verdict that any lecturer who is not satisfied with the present condition of service should resign and apply elsewhere.

It has gotten too far, this demand and that demand, having good leaders is what can save our country (including education sector), not this incessant time wasting ASUU strike.

FG is still the employer here, any lecturer who is not contented with what's on the table now will resign and go and apply in Oxford and Cambridge, they should stop using unionism to pin down others who are realistic.
Haha, you already know what the court will decide?
It's the kind of mentality we found ourselves here that makes us reason the way you did.
You work in a company that agreed to pay you e.g 200k at the end of the month. You worked for continuous 2yrs, you're being paid 100k. When you complain you will be asked to resign and apply elsewhere if you don't want the 100k?
We don't have efficient Labour law implementation here.
In Labour laws, this is what will be applicable:
1. ASUU sholud forfeit the 7 months salary they did not work.
2. FG should fulfill their 5 year old signed agreement that lead to the strike.
Then peace!
FG will ask you to forfeit 7 months but won't fulfill the demands that led to it!
Who's deceiving who bro?

I think the public universities should be sold to private owners who can charge what fees they deem fit.
If there is no concrete resolution to avert further strikes, successive governments will not have any option than to do what you said, privatising the universities!
But both ASUU and the students may resist that one o, any attempt in this economy to increase school fees to more than 200%, students will repeat what might be bigger than ENDSARS, because once you privatise, cost of everything will skyrocket! Some lecturers might also have issues because some of them are not fit to be there, a private owner cannot tolerate their output and lackadaisical attitude!

JJuanMiguel:

It's this your belief that has made ASUU prolong the strike, but unfortunately you all are wrong this time around. It will be 7 months in few days time and a lot of lecturers are really suffering while FG they think they are fighting don't even feel anything.
ASUU can choose to stay home for another 7 months, I'm sure FG won't complain as the strike is not affecting them in any way.

Academic calender, admission and lectures, ASUU, VC, uni-Senate's and the various universities can do whatever they like and structure it how they want. It's not something FG will directly interfere with, that's between the schools and NUC.
So ASUU cannot use that one as a leverage.

What ASUU should have taught in the past seven months.
Let them come and teach it in the next seven months, they will be paid in the next seven months.

ASUU also did themselves some favor by turning down the alleged 200% fee increment, because it will affect the masses in certain ways, the lecturers are part of the masses too, most of them have children and wards in the universities and some lecturers are post graduate students too.

However, the proposed increment is not a guarantee that there will be enough money to fund the universities. Yes, students will pay more and more money will go to the TSA. But it's still up to the government to release the fund to the universities or divert it elsewhere.
The uni-senate's, VC's, e.t.c are they not ASUU members?
Do you know the CVC's have been approached last week to resume school and they with the various pro-chancellors proffered another solution of which the FG said they will look into, next thing, they are going to court! Let's see how that compulsion works, unless they will sack everybody.
How do you justify a government that have reneged on 3 successive agreements and they are going to court
Let them go, we are watching!
Do you know 4 consecutive letters were written in a space 13 months notifying FG of the agreements and strike and they did nothing? They did not even care to reply those letters bro.
Anyway these things are properly documented, for court's sake.
Let the same court that will rule that ASUU won't be paid (which is what is obtainable anyway), let them also rule on FG to fulfill those "time-lined" agreements which they reneged without any official or unofficial communication to ASUU on why those agreements can't be met anymore!!
If FG can fulfill those AGREEMENTS, then forfeting the 7 months will not be a big deal, in 3 months they will recover and be in profit for the rest of their active years!!
As for the increment in tuition, it comes with autonomy specific to each institution, nothing like from TSA to elsewhere! You get what you generated.
"Let them pay me what is agreed and increase the tuition, then I can even pay 500% increment for my children" but ASUU were not thinking this way then.
Let such offer come to the table again, ASUU will gladly accept it with immediate effect!!

PS: I am not a lecturer or ASUU member but I have someone at NUC.

FG won't pay ASUU any money for sitting at home for 7 months.
No matter how long it takes, they will still pay them.
What of ASUU forfeiting what they could have taught during the 7 months and move on to the next academic session? Implying that the current year one's will go back and write UTME while the current final year won't graduate?
ASUU is the cause of all these because I did not know why they refused when FG in 2017 proposed 200% increment in tuition fees for students, as a major source for university funding! By now there will be enough money to meet these demands. I really blame ASUU!!

If FG is interested in ending this strike soon, they know exactly what to do, -pay the backlog of salaries, with the 23.5 to 35% increment for professors!
Saying the increment will take effect from next year and you will not pay them 7 months backlog is trouble! Of course you don't expect them to agree to that! Many are in debts already and may not even have the money for normal academic activities and research without those salaries!

Education / FG Drags ASUU To Industrial Court, Says Negotiations Have Failed by ogaontop(m): 9:44am On Sep 10, 2022
The raging dispute between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that has kept many universities shut for more than seven months will shift to the Industrial court next Monday. ASUU had embarked on strike since February 15 to protest alleged decay of infrastructure at the various institutions, as well as neglect of the welfare of its members.

A reliable source at the Federal Ministry of Labour told THISDAY last night that the ministry’s Trade Dispute Department had filed a case before the Industrial Arbitration Court in Abuja and that the hearing would commence next Monday.

According to the source, “The federal government has filed a case at the Industrial Court challenging the continued strike by the university teachers. This is in conformity with Section 17 of the Trade Dispute Act.”
There have been series of negotiations between the federal government and the ASUU leadership but all ended in stalemate without a tangible outcome.

However, talks between the federal government and ASUU finally hit the rocks last Tuesday after both sides met at the National University Commission’s office in Abuja.

The federal government had said that it would not sign any other agreement it cannot implement.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, disclosed this during a meeting of Pro-Chancellors and Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities, held at the NUC’s office.
Adamu said President Muhammadu Buhari had warned the government’s team involved in the negotiation with ASUU against signing an agreement that the government would not be able to fulfil.

The minister said the government had offered the union a 23.5 per cent salary increase “for all categories of the workforce in federal universities, except for the professorial cadre which will enjoy a 35 per cent upward review. He said the government had also promised that N150 billion “shall be provided for in the 2023 Budget as funds for the revitalisation of federal universities, to be disbursed to the Institutions in the First Quarter of the year.”
Also, the government said N50 billion would be provided “for in the 2023 Budget for the payment of outstanding arrears of earned academic allowances, to be paid in the first quarter of the year.”

However, ASUU and three other university unions have rejected the offer, describing it as “inadequate to meet their respective demands needed to tackle the challenges confronting the university system.”

2. 50billion earned allowance and 100billion to VC's for revitalisation
These things are promises to start from NEXT year's budget that will come effect after Q1, probably around April or May next year
This current government has failed ASUU on 2 former promises and that is what led to this current strike. You want them to end it now and probably prepare for another one in the next few months?
