Residents stayed indoors across major cities in
south-east Nigeria as residents complied with
a sit-at-home exercise called by pro-Biafran
groups, with most businesses including banks,
markets and motor parks under lock.
The Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, and the
Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra,
MASSOB, had called for a sit-at-home today in
the south-east to commemorate the
declaration of Biafra by late Chukwuemeka
Ojukwu some 50 years ago.
In Owerri, Enugu and Aba, markets including
the popular Ariara main market in Aba were on
total lockdown.
Other businesses including banks, fuel stations,
and parks were also shut.
A resident of Owerri and Biafra supporter,
Okemiri Samson, commended the people of the
city for the compliance to the exercise.
“This is the highest compliance recorded in the
city in recent times”, he noted.
In Enugu, there was also a massive
compliance.
“I am at the Ogbete Main market in Enugu right
now, it is under lock and key.
“My sisters went to school and their school
was closed so they came back,” a resident,
Raphael Onyekachi, told PREMIUM TIMES on
phone.
In Port Harcourt, south-south Nigeria, there
was also a high level of compliance according
to a resident. Okezie Omeire.
Mr. Omeire advised commuters not to bother
going to Aba or Umuahia as the road was
closed.
“If you are going to Aba from Port Harcourt,
please don’t even dare! You will not get to
your destination. Everywhere is as dry and as
silent as a graveyard. I just wasted my time
and money this morning thinking I will make it
to Umuahia this morning but guess what? I
can’t even make it to Osisioma junction. I have
to drive back to PH (Port Harcourt),” he said.
“Starting from Port Harcourt city, Rumuola,
Rumuokwuta, Rumuokoro, Choba, Mile 1, Mile
2 and Mile 3 markets, Oil Mill and any busy
place you can think of in PH, everywhere is
scanty and deserted!”
The exercise, according to preliminary reports
gathered by PREMIUM TIMES has so far been
a huge success in Anambra State especially in
Onitsha as shops, markets, banks and schools
in the city remained closed.
According to a resident, John Okorie, “MASSOB
called and we answered. All businesses in the
city are closed including shops in the streets.”
Security officials were seen driving around the
city to keep the peace. A similar situation was
recorded in the state’s capital, Awka, and the
second commercial city of Nnewi.
In Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, there was partial
compliance, as the Abakpa Market, the city’s
main market, was opened but most shops still
remained closed at press time.
Many of the traders were seen gathered in
front of their shops discussing the situation.
As they noticed that those who flouted the
order and opened their shops were not being
molested, many of them summoned courage
and started opening their shops.
But the major private transporters in the city
shut down their parks in compliance with the
MASSOB and IPOB directives.
However, two banks, UBA and First Bank,
opened their doors to customers while other
banks remained shut leaving customers, who
thronged to the banks, stranded.
Hours later, some other banks opened for
business after observing the tight security
mounted by police and other security agencies
in the city to secure lives and prosperity.
But Ecobank and Diamond bank branches
remained closed as at press time.
Also, police helicopters were seen hovering over
most of the cities to provide aerial surveillance
especially in Umuahia, the hometown of the
IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Mr. Kanu, who is facing charges of treasonable
felony, was recently released on bail. While on
bail, he has, however, restated his demand for
a Biafran state, and urged support for
Tuesday’s sit-at-home.
The Ohaneze Ndigbo, a foremost socio-cultural
Igbo group, also said it saw nothing wrong in
the sit-at-home directive, saying it was a
peaceful means of protest source: http://www.conscienceradio.net/biafra-80-comply-sit-home/ |
Cesc Fabregas has refused to rule out a possible transfer away from Chelsea in the summer despite insisting that he feels loved at Stamford Bridge. The 30-year-old midfielder has endured a frustrating campaign in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge at Stamford Bridge despite helping Chelsea win the title. Fabregas found his first-team opportunities at Chelsea to be severely restricted this season and only started 13 Premier League games for the Blues. However, the Spaniard delivered whenever called upon and scored five goals and made 12 assists for the west London side as the won the title for the second time in three seasons. Fabregas’ lack of playing time this season has inevitably caused him to be linked with a move away from Chelsea this summer. And the midfielder did not give any reassurances about his future when quizzed about his situation after Saturday’s FA Cup final. Asked if he had ever considered leaving Chelsea, Fabregas told the Evening Standard : “Not necessarily, but in football you can never say never. “Anything can happen but I have always said I feel very, very loved by the fans here and every time I have played I have shown I can play at the top level in this team. “It is all about trying to change the manager’s decision. “Of course every player wants to play more, it is in the genes of a winner and I am one of them. I’m here for whatever the team needs and I have shown that during the season. source: http://www.conscienceradio.net/cesc-fabregas-sends-message-chelsea-fans-future/ |

Counting of the sums of money allegedly recovered from the official residence of a Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, and which were ordered by a Federal High Court in Abuja, to be deposited in the Central Bank of Nigeria on Thursday, has revealed a discrepancy of a total amount of N22,160. Justice John Tsoho, before whom Ngwuta is being prosecuted on money laundering and passport fraud charges, disclosed on Friday that while the prosecution claimed to have tendered N35,358,000, the counting witnessed by representatives of the court and parties in the case on Thursday, revealed that the amount actually tendered was N35,335,840. The judge said this while informing the court about the report of the counting submitted to him shortly after proceedings commenced on Friday. There were no problems with the money in other currencies. The prosecution had through the leader of the Department of State Service’s search team, Mr. John Utazi, that allegedly recovered the various sums of money in local and foreign currencies from Ngwuta’s house, tendered the money before the court as exhibits earlier on Thursday. The money was contained in nine bags and boxes. Out of the nine items, eight of them contained naira notes, which Utazi said totaled N35,358,000. He said the ninth bag contained £25,915; $319,596 (USD); R50 (South African rands); €280 (euros); 380 ( dirhams); and 420 dalasis. The items were opened during the Thursday’s proceedings to reveal the content but the counting in the presence of the representatives of the court and parties to the case was done after court proceedings on Thursday. But under cross-examination by the lead defence counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), on Friday, Utazi insisted that the amount he delivered to the court was N35,358,000, which he earlier claimed and not N35,335,840 which the report of the counting revealed. Utazi said, “What I delivered to the exhibit keeper yesterday (Thursday) was N35,358,000.” When asked, he said, “I was not present when the money was counted.” When pressed to answer if he disagreed with the report of the counting, Utazi said, “What I delivered N35,358,000. “I stand by what I delivered to the court. “I meticulously counted the money.I don’t know whether to agree or not but what I delivered to the court was N35,358,000” source: http://www.conscienceradio.net/just-controversy-surrounds-money-recovered-justice-ngwuta/ |

Vice Chancellor of the Kaduna State University (KASU) Prof. Muhammad Tanko has debunked rumor that is trending on social media that the Kafanchan Campus of the University has been closed down with the view to relocate both academic and non-academic activities of the campus to the Kaduna Main Campus. This was stated in a statement signed by its VC and issued to Journalists on the 22nd May, 2017 in Kaduna State said,” This rumor emanated as a result of a “Notice of Resumption” issued out by the Management of KASU, Kafanchan Campus which directed all undergraduate students of Kafanchan Campus that the KASU portal would be opened on Monday (today) 22nd May, 2017” for those who were unable to complete their (first semester) registration, they should ensure they do so”. What thickens the closure rumor further was a paragraph in the resumption notice which noted that “all students would resume at the main campus” same date, and are therefore “advised to report at the consultancy unit where you will be allocated accommodation at no cost to you”, while “lectures would commence at the main campus on Monday 29th May, 2017” respectively. However, making a clarification on the said notice of resumption, the Vice Chancellor explained that,” the current action was taken on the best interest of the students so that they can cover the lost semester; catch up and continue with their normal studies pending when the campus is reopened, which academic activities were suspended last December owing to security breakdown in Kafanchan,” According to him,” no students were left behind in their academic pursuit during his time as he was very committed to taking Kaduna State University to higher academic success before the completion of his tenure as Vice Chancellor. “Students of the Kafanchan Campus were seen in groups at the main campus discussing in exciting tunes after they have given details of their registration as directed by the University authority. The Kafanchan Campus of KASU is made up of two faculties and eight departments. They are Faculty of Environmental Science and Faculty of Agriculture. They consist of the following departments. viz: Environmental Management, Architecture, Estate Management, Quantity Survey; and Agric Extension, Agric Economics, Crop Production and Animal Science. A High court in London has awarded former Delta State governor, James Ibori, a nominal £1 (about N400) as damages over his claim of unlawful detention by British Home Secretary Amber Rudd. Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb agreed that Ibori, who spent years in UK jail for money laundering, was unlawfully held for one day, 18 hours and 10 minutes between December 20 and 21 last year. She however ruled, in a way that mocked Ibori’s claim, that he is only entitled to a nominal £1 of the sum. Ibori had claimed £4,000 in damages. She said the Home Secretary “failed to have regard to her limits to detain” as attempts were made to claw back millions from the fraudster. But in rejecting Ibori’s bid for thousands in compensation, the judge ruled: “There is no compensatory loss to Mr Ibori and I fix nominal damages at £1.” Ibori was extradited to the UK for trial in February 2012 and prosecuted on the basis of evidence from the Metropolitan Police. He pleaded guilty to 10 serious criminal charges over the appropriation of massive amounts of public funds during his two terms as governor of Delta State, Nigeria. He was sentenced in April 2012 at Southwark Crown Court to 13 years imprisonment, and an order for his deportation as a foreign criminal was made in May 2015. Having spent time in custody in the United Arab Emirates, he was due to be conditionally released from prison on December 20 2016. But the Home Office indicated that there was no intention to deport Ibori to Nigeria until he handed over at least £57m “proceeds of crime.” An email stated: “we cannot deport Mr Ibori until the confiscation matter has been resolved.” On December 21 last year, the day after his due release date, High Court Mrs Justice May ordered Ibori to be freed on conditions, describing the attempts to detain as “quite extraordinary.” The judge said: “You don’t hold someone just because it is convenient to do so and without plans to deport them.” A Home Office application that Ibori be electronically tagged and subject to strict curfew conditions was also rejected after the judge accepted arguments that the Home Secretary was attempting to misuse her immigration and deportation powers. Ibori left the UK under his own steam on February 3 2017, but also launched his claim for damages for false imprisonment and breach of his rights under the 1998 Human Rights Act not to be unlawfully detained. Ruling on Monday that Ibori had been held unlawfully for almost two days, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb said it followed a failure to hold effective confiscation proceedings. It was in the context of awaiting the making of an assets confiscation order, and likely subsequent efforts to “recoup” a sum estimated to be at least £57m, that the decision to detain Ibori was made. The judge ruled: “In this case, the secretary of state has been wrong-footed by the failure of the prosecution to achieve determination of its confiscation proceedings against Mr Ibori prior to his release from prison on licence.” Ibori, a former London DIY store cashier, was jailed for fraud totalling nearly £50m in April 2012. He evaded capture in Nigeria after a mob of supporters attacked police, but was arrested in Dubai in 2010 and extradited to the UK. source:http://www.conscienceradio.net/london-court-awards-ibori-1-damages-unlawful-detention/ cc:lalasticlala
