This comes amid pressure on the DSS to either release Bawa or charge him with offences the secret police’s investigation has found that Bawa committed.

Nigeria’s secret police have retrieved over N580 million from the former Chairman of the anti-corruption body, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, sources have told SaharaReporters.

Sources in the Department of State Services (DSS) which has detained Bawa since June told SaharaReporters on Friday that the former anti-corruption chief has coughed up over N580 million illegally acquired during his time as the head of the agency.

This comes amid pressure on the DSS to either release Bawa or charge him with offences the secret police’s investigation has found that Bawa committed.

President Bola Tinubu suspended Bawa indefinitely as the chairman of the EFCC in June “to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office” following “weighty allegation of abuse of office leveled against him”.

Bawa was taken into custody by the DSS on June 14 hours after his suspension by the president and has since remained there.

In August, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) threatened to sue President Tinubu's administration over the continued detention of Bawa by the DSS without arraignment for proper charges.

Also, on Wednesday, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, knocked President Tinubu’s administration over the continued detention of Bawa and the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, without trial.

“It is indefensible to keep the EFCC Chairman and the CBN governor under arrest for extended periods of time without or before trial, just as it is also unacceptable that political parties are used to intimidate and harass citizens exercising their opinions in the public domain,” Lawal said in his statement.

“Over N580 million has been retrieved from the incarcerated former chairman of the anti-graft agency, EFCC,” one of the sources told SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters also reported in June that Bawa had been taken from the headquarters of the secret police to a private facility to have total control over him after he refused to write any statements in custody.

It was learnt that Bawa told investigators that the DSS had no right to detain him without charges, hence his refusal to write any statements in custody.

“They’ve taken Bawa from DSS headquarters to one of their private facilities to have total control over him after he refused to write statements requested from him,” a top security source had said.

“The detained EFCC chairman has refused to write statements; he told DSS they have no right to detain him without charges.

"He was also accused of shielding former Governor of Zamfara, Abdulaziz Yari, while helping him to hunt down his opponents,” a source had told SaharaReporters.

“So far since his detention, he has vehemently refused to cooperate with DSS investigators,” another top source had noted.

PoliticsNigerian Ambassador Dies At 42 by ogododo(op): 9:29am On Oct 20, 2023
Alhaji Mansur Nuhu Bamalli, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Morocco, is dead.
He was also the Magajin Garin Zazzau and biological younger brother to the Emir of Zazzau.

A statement by the Media and Publicity officer of the Zazzau emirate council said Mansur Nuhu Bamalli died at a private Hospital in Lagos while on transit to Morocco.

The statement added that “funeral prayers will be announced later.”

He is survived by a wife and 2 children. Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari had appointed the deceased a year ago.

In a letter dated October 7 and signed by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, he had said the appointment was in recognition of the decades of your meritorious service to our fatherland in the Nigerian Foreign Service.

“You shall be invited in due course for the ceremony of investiture. Please, accept my warm felicitations and those of the Honourable Minister of State, the Permanent Secretary and the entire staff of the Ministry,” the letter read.

Before his appointment he was a deputy director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Affairs Ministry had issued a notice for the recall of Nigeria’s ambassadors, both career and non-career envoys across 300 foreign missions worldwide, but the diplomats are yet to return to the country owing to logistics, including Authority to incur Expenditures (AIEs) for passages.

AIEs are the details of the entitlement of each envoy in terms of their passages and other travel arrangements to return to Nigeria.

Liverpool restart the Premier League campaign at home to Everton in a Merseyside Derby on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp is not usually much of a fan of this particular kick-off time but did at least end something of a hoodoo by beating Wolves last month.

The Reds have started the season strongly and could use their earlier assignment compared to the rest of their Premier League title rivals to move top of the table.

Everton, meanwhile, look to have turned of late under Sean Dyche but a trip across Stanley Park to Anfield remains a daunting prospect.

Andy Robertson looks set to miss out after the Scotland international suffered a shoulder injury representing his country against Spain.

Cody Gakpo, however, may return after a recent knee injury. Curtis Jones is suspended while Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic and Caoimhin Kelleher are set to miss out.

For Everton, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is fit again and Seamus Coleman is making good progress on his return from injury.

Bola Tinubu moves to block FBI, CIA, other U.S. agencies from releasing confidential files as October ending deadline looms

President Bola Tinubu is in yet another scramble to block records relating to him from being disclosed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Central Intelligence Agency and other United States services.

Court filings seen by Peoples Gazette showed Mr Tinubu’s lawyers in the U.S. have filed motions to appear in an ongoing freedom of information action brought against the U.S. organisations where records that may help answer questions about the president’s real identity and decades-long endeavours are domiciled.

Christopher Carmichael, one of the lawyers who represented Mr Tinubu in the recent Chicago records case, filed the motion, dated October 18, 2023, stating that he was a lawyer in good standing to appear in the case in the FOIA lawsuit underway in Washington D.C., filings said.

“Pursuant to Civil Local Rule 83.2(c), Bryan A. Carey moves for the admission and appearance of attorney Christopher Carmichael pro hac vice in the above-entitled action,” Mr Carey, who practices in D.C., said on Mr Carmichael’s behalf. “This motion is supported by the Declaration of Christopher Carmichael. As set forth in Mr. Carmichael’s declaration, he is admitted and an active member in good standing.”

What informed Mr Tinubu’s expectation that he could block U.S. agencies from complying with federal disclosure regulations remained unclear. Mr Carmichael did not immediately return a request seeking comments, and the president’s lead lawyer in the U.S., Oluwole Afolabi, told The Gazette he could not comment on the case until it has officially commenced. The lawyers would work to file a full argument soonest in order to stand a chance of being able to argue any reliefs before the October 31 deadline.

Mr Tinubu was alerted to the lawsuit when The Gazette reported on September 11 that the FBI had agreed to turn over 2,500 pages of response information on the Nigerian leader. The president was previously investigated for narcotics trafficking in the U.S. in the 1990s, during which he was compelled to forfeit $460,000 via a federal court order in Chicago.

The FBI said it was planning to release the records before the end of October to Aaron Greenspan, the proprietor of PlainSite, a website that pushes anti-corruption and transparency in public service, The Gazette reported. Several other U.S. institutions, including the U.S. State Department, Internal Revenue Service, and Drug Enforcement Administration, have all indicated readiness to turn over thousands of pages of Bola Tinubu-related records. Mr Tinubu’s move came two weeks after he lost a fierce battle to block a federal court in Chicago from releasing his academic records to Atiku Abubakar, his main political rival in Nigeria. The school ultimately released the records, which showed that a certain Bola Tinubu was admitted into the school in 1977.

Still, the school said it only assumed, based on a cursory look at records, that its former student was the Nigerian president, but also said under oath that it could not authenticate the certificate he used to run for office in Nigeria in June 2022.

The Labour Party has said the report of recently released by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, detailing soaring food prices as well as rising cost of goods and services is a stark reflection of how badly the Bola Tinubu-led administration has ran the economy.

National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh said this in a telephone interview with Vanguard, in Abuja, on Monday.

He said, “The recently released NBS report pegging the national inflation rate of food prices and other items at 26.72 per cent, is simply a reflection of how badly the Tinubu administration has failed since taking over albeit temporarily on May 29, 2023.

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that it will not trample on people’s right and press freedom in the fight against fake news and disinformation in the country.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

Idris called on Nigerians to always “promote the truth and nothing but the truth”.

“We must be in the forefront of advocating for truthful information all the time. Everything that is fake should not be promoted.

“This is because, it can lead to anarchy and destruction of lives and properties. And by the way, nobody will want his home, country, state or nation to be in tatters because somebody is encouraging fake news.

“Fake news should be condemned in all its ramifications. I have said that it is important for all of us to be careful in the way we navigate these waters. We know that we don’t want fake news,” he said.

The Minister further explained that there are people who are using so many platforms to provide credible information, adding that such is desirable and should be emulated.

“So, we must collectively come together and see ways and means by which these fake news can be tackled without necessarily trampling on the rights of the people, free press and freedom of information,” he said.

PoliticsNo Railway Coaches Stolen, Says NRC MD by ogododo(op): 2:16pm On Oct 15, 2023
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that the first set of coaches which was alleged to have been stolen from its Maiduguri yard actually got to its Jos, Plateau State running shed for general repair on October 10, 2023.
A statement by the Nigerian Railway Corporation Fidet Okhiria on Sunday, stated that the viral video purported to have emanated from NTA had alleged that police had intercepted some criminals trying to steal a train coach at the Maiduguri Railway Station.

Okhiria, who spoke exclusively with The Nation from China, said the coach in question was actually heading to Jos for repair ahead of its deployment on the rail corridor to enhance the Mass Transit Train Shuttle (MTTS), which is meant to help alleviate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on the masses.

He said the RDM Maiduguri in a photograph was seen successfully handing over the coaches to his Jos counterpart when the coach got to its destination last week.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has been drawn to a news trending on numerous social media platforms purported to have emanated from Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), in which it was reported that an attempt was made to steal NRC coaches from Maiduguri.

“NRC management wishes to clarify this erroneous reportage by stating that the said coaches are officially being moved to NRC running shed in Jos, Plateau State to be overhauled and putting them back to operation. NRC is trying to extend Rail Mass Transit all over the country.

He further disclosed that the Railway management in a letter Ref. NO.MDP.70Nol.30/127 written by the Managing Director Fidet Okhiria, on the 13th of October, to the Commissioner of Police, Nigerian Railway Police Command, had intimated the police of the Corporation’s plan to overhaul all its rolling stocks located in all of its districts, with a view to getting them ready for deployment in areas of need.:

“You may wish to note that the recent removal of subsidy on premium motor spirit (PMS) impacted the cost of transportation among others. The NRC is of the view that making more rail routes available will greatly subsidize the cost of transportation and thereby reducing the hardship experienced by commuters.”

This informed the need for the overhaul of some of our non-functional rolling stock.

However, the expertise required for the overhaul of the rolling stock, the statement stated, is not available in Maiduguri, hence the need for the movement of 9SPA coaches, 1DRC and 1BVA from Maiduguri to Jos.

He urged the CP to, “render all possible assistance to ensure a smooth movement and delivery of the rolling stocks from Maiduguri to Jos.”

PoliticsAny Policeman Who Extorts Nigerians Is An Armed Robber – Force PRO by ogododo(op): 1:47pm On Oct 14, 2023
Spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, says police personnel who trot guns at Nigerians in order to extort them are not different from armed robbers.

A crypto trader and influencer on X, had dragged the police after his house was allegedly broken into and he was arrested forcefully.

The man claimed the police broke into his estate wearing normal clothes without any search warrant, taking all the men who lived there to the station, questioning them and claiming they were internet fraudsters.

He provided debit alerts where they took some money from him, while stating that they collected a total of five hundred thousand from all the men who live in his estate.

“So Policemen came to my estate yesterday evening around 7PM and packed all the men in the Estate. We all slept in the cell last night for no just reason. When we were called for ‘Questioning’ which was more or less a dictation. They said ‘You Dey do Yahoo’ I denied it because I don’t even know how yahoo works.

“Next thing was to write a statement saying I’m either a Cultist or An Armed robber. We all refused writing statements without lawyers present, so we were forced to sleep in the cell. This morning, over 500k was extorted from us in general
,” the post read partly.

Reacting, a user tagged the Force PRO saying, “As PRO of Nigeria Police Force do something to this dirty stuff you mate always do everyday. Police are your friend indeed 🤮”

Responding, Adejobi said: “I think we need to get some things clear here. He insisted on seeing a lawyer, and he slept in the cell. Did the lawyer come? Was the money paid in the presence of his lawyer? If the lawyer didn’t come, why didn’t you call someone. Or was your phone taken away from you? He needs to clarify certain things here. Whether police are your friend or your enemy, what was the role your lawyer played.”

In his reaction, another X user shared screenshots of an old comment by the Force PRO, where he condemned extortion by the police.

“You know why I like you, you dey quick forget something. Ire o,” the user captioned the post.

Replying, Adejobi made further clarification on the issue.

He said: “Yes, this still stands. Any armed policeman or security operative who forcefully extorts an innocent Nigerian is as good as an armed robber. Extortion is never part of any agencies mandate, either armed or not. We condemn such, and even the IGP has made it clear.

“The IGP has warned officers not to drop his name to extort or dupe Nigerians and not to take any gift to him. We made an official statement to this effect. You need to read and comprehend comments before you pass any judgement or make condemnation here.

“My comment was clear enough. Must we continue to pay these erring policemen? Are we going to continue this way? In fact, when i read in his tweet that he resisted, i was happy, but he could have resisted till d end. He was with them in the station premises.

“He was not on the road. No one supported the extortion, but he shouldn’t have paid them after his initial moves and resistance. I think my assertion is clearer to you now. Thanks.”

PoliticsIMF Proposes Higher Taxes As Solution To Nigeria’s Fiscal Challenge by ogododo(op): 8:50am On Oct 14, 2023
The International Monetary Fund has proposed a higher tax policy to solve Nigeria’s fiscal challenges.

IMF Africa Department Director, Abebe Selassie disclosed this during a press briefing on the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Economic Outlook on Friday at the ongoing World Bank Group/International Monetary Fund Meeting in Marrakech, Morocco.

DAILY POST reports that the country’s fiscal challenge had persisted despite fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government in June.

In 2022, the country spent 96 per cent of its revenue on debt servicing; still in the first six months of 2023, debt serving gulped N2.34 trillion.

As a way out, the IMF director said the Nigerian Government must back the fuel subsidy removal and naira unification policies with an effective policy to ramp up revenue.

The exchange rate reforms that the Government did were very, very welcome, trying to unify the rate, similarly the fuel subsidy.

“But that will not help and will not stick unless you also tighten monetary policy and do something to mobilise more tax revenues. So, a holistic package of reforms is what’s needed
.

So, you have a medley of things mainly rooted in the fiscal challenges that Nigeria has faced, not having tax revenues.

“At the same time, this country has incredible potential, and we have seen reforms moving in the right direction in recent months.

“What is needed, we feel, is making the reforms holistic and help reinforce each other. Just as things were not reinforcing each other in the past, I think there is scope to make the reforms reinforce each other,” the IMF said.

The Village Head of Zazzaga in Munya Local Government Area of Niger State, Mallam Usman Sarki, has been shot dead by bandits.

Daily Trust gathered that some bandits launched the attack on Zazzaga and adjoining communities Tuesday night.

Sources said unspecified number of other farmers including women were also kidnapped.

A source who pleaded anonymity said, “the attack was launched in the night on Tuesday. They shot the village Head of Zazzaga, Mallam Usman Sarki, dead and kidnapped many others. For now, we cannot give the exact number of people they took away. They also rustled many cattle belonging to us.”

Another source said, I don’t know the number of people taken from other villages because the attack was in the night. So everybody fled to bush. But they succeeded in kidnapping many people. In Kutara, a neighbouring village to Zazzaga where I come from, seven people including women were kidnapped during the attack. That’s the only number I know. They also rustled our cattle.”

Residents told our correspondent that attacks on communities in Munya, Shiroro and Rafi LGAs have become a daily occurrence in the last few weeks.

When contacted, the Niger State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the attack but said he had yet to get the full details.
