This is hard sha. For marketing position perhaps I will go for competence. For admin... I non sure o, because honesty is not enough to successfully manage a business but a dishonest administrator will run your business aground.
Every other area, perhaps integrity before competence.

When I gave this a though recently, I realized that our health care and education, especially university education is subsidized compared to many of the countries we admire. No students loan here.
I read one guy's comment that he spent one night in a US hospital (probably didn't have health insurance, don't know) and spent an equivalent of almost 3million Nigerian naira.
When God puts on his prayer request session, the ones from Nigeria are likely to be full of negativity.
ultron12345:
You're 100% right

Till today, I still appreciate that Nigeria gave me the opportunity to attend medical school with less than $100, without taxing me to death or putting me neck deep into student debt like other countries. Even though I no longer practice, I always find time every month to donate my medical skills to the society as a way to give back to the nation, because if I was made to pay the true value of that MBBS degree, I wouldn't have been able to.

I've worked in government hospitals where people pay 10K for caeserian sections, and yet will say Nigeria has done nothing for them, ceasarian section that if I'm to do, only the cost price without my "workmanship" will cost near 100k. My fellow doctors who got MBBS at less than $100 will go to UK or Canada, be doing better financially than the indigenous doctors there, and be insulting Nigeria, thinking its their prudence that put them in better financial standing than their counterparts from other countries, not knowing that it's because those doctors are still busy paying back hefty student loans for the same degree Nigeria gave them for next to nothing.

The fact remains that there is no problem with the land called Nigeria, there is no problem with River Niger or Zuma Rock. The problem of Nigeria is the citizens, nigerians. Those leaders we insult are also from amongst the citizens, the SARS that abuse their power are also from amongst the citizens. They didn't come from another planet, they are our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and neighbors.

If you take all Nigerians to Dubai and bring everyone from Dubai to Nigeria, in less than 4 years, Nigeria will turn to Dubai and in a few months, Dubai will turn to Nigeria. Before you know it, the Nigerians in Dubai will be begging for visa back to Nigeria. That should tell you something about the kind of people we are.

What I was trying to say is how is your investment protected in case the broker (online) goes bankrupt or bust. I'm interested in long term investment in foreign markets, hence I need to know I will be protected in some way, 10 years plus is along way to go and anything might have happened by then.

You know, it's not as if there's any legal physical paper to sign on. What everyone uses here are just apps (online brokers,) which doesn't have any proof it'll stand the test of time. I think I'm clearer now.

Is there a way to convert an AC fridge into a DC fridge or freezer, I wonder if anyone knows about HVAC enough to contemplate that. One can DIY a faulty old AC freezer and re-purpose it into a DC fridge and give it a new life. At least one would not have to bother about padding and heat conservation since that would already be taken care of.

I think it is beyond public funds. We mismanage everything, private, corporate and of course public funds.
It is as if once we see money we run mad. Many of us who condemn others tend to do worse when the opportunity arises. I think some sociology PhD students should study the black race all over the world.
There seems to a recurring decimal which ultimately makes the world disrespect us. Although we always blame our leaders here, what can be the excuse of the blacks who have spent hundreds of years in the developed world without any influence their brothers back home.

@Bolded, that is the point Barry is making. Those guys have been able to discover an opportunity that works for them in the village rather than in the city.
Retires do not have the strength non de experience to farm so it is still youths who should take over farming and improve over what our fore fathers did.
The painful truth is that some persons are better off in their towns than been swallowed up in the city where they live a life that is less than that for humans just to be said to be in the city especially when that city is Lagos.

Do what please you and works for you but never loose sight of the other perspective and options. If city works for you stay there, but if all you are doing in the city is saving for landlord, maybe it is time to do a critical review of your life to see if there are other options you are overlooking, no need to feel insecure if your beliefs are challenged.

Good points. Another thing to note is that it is not everyone that is chasing for money. Many other people are contented with the little they have in life and live a fuller light.

I know there are many people living in Lagos just getting by and not even able to afford food, some of such people are afraid to return back to base as the prodigal son did so as not to be mocked in the village, so they remain in the city hoping that one day their story changes.

GonFreecss1:
I understand you and Sir “Barrytone” very well.

People are missing the major point which he is making. And it’s funny because we are in an investment forum, the same forum that preaches what sir Barrytone is saying.

Going to Lagos and the cities seems like the logical thing to do, but is it? He just basically explained the principles involving more opportunities based on him being a champion there. People are still not getting it.

Many don’t know this, but there are many foreigners mining gold and other stuffs in our villages making a killing why “we” run to Lagos and overseas. It is sad.

Pa Emma, and sir Ukay and the rest of the investment gang I am very sure won’t buy a stock everyone is talking about and keeps rising everyday beyond it’s intrinsic value. They will want to buy more stocks in “bonanza” period, a time when people are scared and running away from the stock market.

Many want to move from Villages to Lagos and many from Lagos to overseas/Canada. I am beginning to think the bonanza might be in the villages, many just don’t know it yet.

Lagos has the highest concentration of rich folks, what they will not tell you is that it also has the highest concentration of very very poor folks who do not fair better than their counterpart they left in the village except for the bagging rights of living in Lagos and seeing flyovers, bridges and high rising buildings.
It does have an ambient that many other states do not have.

d problem wit many nigerians is d get rich quick syndrome. people wants,to hammer witout doing notin, people wanna win, contracts and make big money witout doing a neat job. those people in d village make little but constant money and reinvests them and grow higher. lagos is huge. i only go there if i must fly from there and not abj. ewch time am there i see how much stress, people, had to put up wit. last april was in ikeja and was looking around one morning, saw well dressed looking people going to work, some were wearing casual slippers while carrying their shoes for bag. this is bc they have to trek more dt,morning to evade traffic jam

My advice to the younger ones, don't try this. This cannot work again in Nigeria of today except you want to be a farmer or a councillor in the village. There are lots of opportunities in the cities. You are very correct but Barrytone is also spot on. Lagos creates a different mentality in you but it comes with the pressure to show that you have arrived which is what Barry is talking about.
Many folks who go home during Xmas and show off save for it for most of the year, making the folks in those town feel envious.
It's different strokes for different folks.
Lagos may give to you but it will also collect from you. Some people just want a simple decent life. For some people, 3 million in their account is more than enough.

Lagos vs the rest of Nigeria argument be like Nigeria vs traveling abroad argument.

Not a low hanging fruit bros/ sis. Freelancing/ remote jobs are prevalent in the IT space.
Yes Data Science/ Analysis write codes especially with python.
Go to indeed.com and see remote job opportunities. I think it is better to start with freelancing because it helps you to know what the industry considers important and most importantly to build your portfolio.
As for certifications, they have their place after you have shown that you know what you are really, but trust us, we want to cram and pass to get certifications and hold as a badge whereas people, SME, want solutions to their problems.

niyogeol:
I won't disagree with you. But the place of certificates and certifications exist in IT. And freelancing is a low hanging fruit but it sure takes time too to start earning big.

I don't know if the Data Science or Cybersecurity curriculum contains coding since I am not in that field. Again, the story I painted is about Ireland.

Are you in the IT space?

In the practical IT world, having PhD means nothing. A company will rather employ a secondary school dropout that can code than an msc that is speaking English and theory up and down.
Tell those friends if they really know what they are doing to get on freelancing sites if they will not start earning in USD.
For IT related jobs, results are what determine your market value.
niyogeol:
It is somewhat crazy. I have guys with MSc Data Analytics, Cybersecurity etc with no jobs. So it is making the IT story less interesting at the moment.

I PM'd you.
