Wealth-X CEO Mykolas Rambus Global billionaire population has reached a record 2,325 with the addition of 155 new billionaires in 2014. According to the Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census 2014, released yesterday, 155 new billionaires were minted this year, pushing the global population to a record 2,325 – a 7% rise from 2013. The combined wealth of the world's billionaires increased by 12% to US$7.3 trillion, which is higher than the combined market capitalisation of all the companies that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census 2014 – the only comprehensive, global study on the composition and dynamics of this top tier of the global ultra-high net worth (UHNW) population – shows that Europe, with 775 billionaires, is the region with the most billionaires and billionaire wealth (US$2.37 trillion). North America – the region with the most billionaire wealth in 2013 – was overtaken by Europe in terms of billionaire wealth in this year's census. Asia, however, boasted the largest billionaire wealth increase, with the region's billionaires' fortunes growing by 18.7% over the past year. The region is responsible for 30% of the net increase in global billionaire wealth in 2014. Asia's billionaire population grew by 10% in 2014, with 52 new entrants into the billionaire club – 33 are from China. The United States maintains its position as the world's top billionaire country with a population of 571 billionaires in 2014, followed by China (190) and the United Kingdom (130), which took the third spot from Germany (123) on the Top 40 Billionaire Countries/Territories list The census – which looks at the global billionaire population from July 2013 to June 2014 – examines this top-tier wealth segment by geographical location, gender, sources of wealth and personal traits. "Wealth-X is pleased to partner with UBS for a second consecutive year to produce the Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census," Wealth-X CEO Mykolas Rambus said. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/global-billionaire-population-reaches-record-2-325/189470/ |
Adegbenga Kaka of the All Progressives Congress is the Senator representing Ogun East in the National Assembly. The erstwhile deputy governor of Ogun State under Olusegun Osoba, in this interview with Femi Ogbonnikan, talks about the genesis of the intra-crisis rocking his party in the state and his faction’s grouse with Governor Ibikunle Amosu There are speculations that you and other National Assembly lawmakers from Ogun State are threatening to pull out of APC. Is this true? We never threatened to pull out of APC. We didn’t promise anybody that we are pulling out of APC. And to the best of my knowledge, there was no time we said we are pulling out. We jointly believe in the ideals of APC, as derived from the dialectical principles enunciated by late Pa Obafemi Awolowo in 1983, regarding thesis, anti- thesis and synthesis of bringing like-minded people of progressive inclination from all tendencies together so that, we can provide a clear-cut choice between progressives and conservatives that have been dominating the electoral space since our independence. The fact that we believe in the ideals, it won’t be to our own pleasure or joy to say that, we are leaving APC, the house we jointly built. But, because of the expediency of our time, the miscalculation of bringing in a non-team player, who is now proving, not only to party members, but to the masses that, he doesn’t belong. So, we are saying that, in case, the national executive will not be able to enthrone justice and ensure that what we stand for, is what will be implemented by the government of the day, then, we may have no choice than to take a sabbatical leave and wait for the most appropriate time to pursue what belief we are standing for. So, what we have told our people so far is that, ‘tough time doesn’t last, but tough people do’. We believe that, everything that has a beginning also has an end. It is established in the Bible, and I believe there is time for everything under the sun. So, the four-year tenure that appears to some people as endless period is very much ending. It is very much around the corner. So, we are undaunted, and we believe the process we are going through is as decreed by God, because we believe, according to the Quran that, when God wants to do something great, it starts with difficulty. And if that thing, it is going to be great and everlasting, it starts with impossibility. As a result, the difficulty and impossibility I am talking about, as promised by God, is a test of our will. And if He tries us with some deprivations, of hunger, of loss of property, of loss of lives, He will now give good tidings to those who can persevere, who are patient enough, to say we are from God and to Him alone, we shall return. As a result, we believe in that, and we are standing by it. And we are so sure that at the end of the day, we will triumph over whatever test that we are going through. It is a temporary test. When will that sabbatical leave commence? By the grace of God, if the expected resolution is not carried out before the 30th of this September I can say that a definitive path would be charted for our people, because we can’t afford to abandon our people. We adore them, we respect them. What is on ground and the challenges we are facing is beyond an individual. The state is greater than an individual and the interest of our people is greater than that of an individual. So, if anybody is thinking of perpetuating himself in office and then, thinks he can ride rough-shod over the people, he should know that his time is up, because we won’t abandon the people. And I am sure the people are not even ready to abandon themselves. Hasn’t the national body of your party done enough to resolve the crisis? Well, I don’t know what you mean when you talked of ‘enough’ I don’t know whether they have done anything at all or not because for the past three and a half years, we have had cause to interact, to inter-face, with them and we have stated what was on ground and we have made them realise that the issue were beyond an individual. And if we are building an institution, it will be everlasting. But if it is an individual that we are building, we are doomed to fail. We have interacted with them and there is nothing concrete coming from them. It is not that we are threatening, but we are saying that the time is stolen and the time is up. So, by 30th of this month, if nothing is forthcoming, the battle line is already drawn and we will not shy away from charting a cause that will be in the overall interest of our own people. It is alleged that you have formed a group called ‘Matagbamole’ (don’t step on elders’ toes) within your party. What is the import of the name? We didn’t form a splinter group, but some of our followers in Matagbamole did. They were not grouped together by anybody, nor by our leader, nor by me or by any other senator to the best of my knowledge, but they stand as a pressure group of aggrieved individuals. It is a pressure group and I believe, as they also, believe that, they are pursuing a just cause, because there is no reason why we can say because we want an individual to continue then, he can ride rough- shod on anybody. He can apply what I can call wrong performance. If some people say he has performed in some areas, well, it is possible for one to be a one-product marketer, but to me, there should be a holistic development of our polity. Since the whole body works in synchronisation, there is no reason why we will say, ‘o! I don’t want to go blind then, all my money would be expended on my eyes’, leaving my stomach, leaving my nose, leaving my ears or abandoning my reproductive system. It is just not feasible. So, if anybody is not in the know of what governance is all about, then, there is no reason forcing himself on anybody. Specifically, what are your grouses with Amosun? I don’t have any personal grouse with Mr Governor. I mean the collective grouse of your faction with Mr. Governor… It is not personal grouse, but collectively. Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, yesterday disclosed that there was vacancy in the presidency for any member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Aliyu, who stated this in Minna when some youths under the aegis of Babangida Aliyu Youth for Peace Initiative paid him a courtesy call in the government house where they asked him to contest for the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the PDP, said: “For the 2015 election, there is no vacancy in Aso rock.” The youths led by Inienimi Ballantyne Agiri, told Aliyu that “by tenure and sheer leadership for development capacity, you are the most qualified for national service, we feel duty-bound to also make a clarion call on your humble and hard working self to respond to the earnest yearnings of the patriotic youths of Nigeria for a focused service to the entire citizens of this country by accepting to present yourself as an aspirant for the 2015 presidential election.” Responding, Aliyu said: “As a loyal party man, we will watch as things unfold in the PDP.” He, however, said for the PDP, “we have an incumbent in place. Usually the incumbent, no matter the performance, you will not want to remove him,” adding that: “I believe the PDP will want to offer him that position.” He added that everybody in the PDP would wait until the president declares to run for a second term before any scrambling can begin for the position if he acts in the negative. Aliyu said he had never shown any inordinate ambition for any political office since he joined politics, adding that providence had always had a hand in whatever he becomes. He challenged the youths to join the vanguard of campaigning for the PDP in all parts of the country because the PDP means well for all Nigerians and Nigeria. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/-no-vacancy-in-aso-rock-says-aliyu/189321 |
Delta State governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) in the 2007 general elections , Sunny Onuesoke , on Tuesday, lashed out at Governor of Kano State , Rabiu Kwankwaso, for describing President Goodluck Jonathan as lacking the political will to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency. According to Onuesoke , Kwankwaso also accused Jonathan of witch- hunting the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) governors due to his ( Jonathan) presidential ambition . Reacting to Kwankwaso ’ s allegations in a press statement , Onuesoke said the governor cannot pull down Jonathan because of his over -ambition , stressing that if Kwankwaso were in Jonathan’ s shoes, he would not have done one-tenth in curbing security challenges in Nigeria . Onuesoke, who is also the Country Director of Network for Good Governance ( N 4GG ) , said if Northern leaders like Kwankwaso were up and doing in their responsibilities by providing their people with the basic necessities of life , Boko Haram would not have existed and the people would have been living in peace. “ Kwankwaso was a governor from 1999 to 2003 . He was a Minister of Defence before he won his second term election in 2011 . All these years he was in the PDP . “ To him, PDP was the party to beat , the PDP was a national party, the PDP was the only party that can take Nigeria to the next level, the PDP was the epitome of democracy and good governance . “ But when his personal interest clashed with some powers in the PDP , he left PDP and he is today telling us that PDP is made up of evil men, ” Onuesoke disclosed, just as he alleged that Kwankwaso is part of what is wrong with Nigeria . He wondered why the Kano governor is accusing Jonathan falsely when his people decided to grow the seed of insecurity and poverty in their region at a time when other people were looking for ways to improve their lives by controlling their resources. He added that the Kano State governor and his co -travellers are making Jonathan much popular and his second term election easier . dailyindependentnig.com/2014/09/cant-pull-jonathan-kwankwaso-told/ |
President Goodluck Jonathan met yesterday with some security chiefs over the $9.3m arms deal that went away in South Africa, a source said. Jonathan reportedly demanded “full briefing” on how South African security agents impounded the cash from two Nigerian and an Israeli in Pretoria after it was flown in by a private jet. The Nigerians and the Israeli were said to have told security agents that the money was meant for some arms purchase. Security chiefs, it was learnt, defended the arms deal as “legitimate”. Also yesterday, the Federal Government and South African authorities appeared to have struck some understanding on the matter. Based on diplomatic understanding, the aircraft, a Challenger, and the crew have been released. But a top intelligence official yesterday claimed that the transaction was “legitimate” and the facts had been made available to the South African government. He said the arms order was based on “urgent security” concerns in Nigeria. Investigation by our correspondent revealed that South Africa raised the alarm because of alleged abuse of protocol. A highly-placed source said: “For more than five hours, the President met with some intelligence and security chiefs on the arms deal. “The security chiefs took time to explain that urgent security issues warranted the direct purchase of the arms. “The President opted for full briefing to avoid any backlash on his administration. It will also assist the government to come up with a clear position to the public. Now that the Presidency has the details, it is left to the government to clarify things. “When the government speaks, you will get the details of what transpired on the $9.3million arms deal.” news2.onlinenigeria.com/news/377923-jonathan-meets-security-chiefs-over-seized-9-3m.html http://thenationonlineng.net/new/jonathan-meets-security-chiefs-over-seized-9-3m/ |
The former PDP National Chairman, Dr Ahmadu Ali, on Tuesday in Abuja said that Nigeria would remain united and prosperous in spite of some evil machinations. Ali said this at a national rally of more than 7,000 groups under the aegis of Goodluck Support Groups (GSG), organised by the National Coordinator, Prof. Rufai Ahmed. Ali, who chaired the rally, enumerated the benefits the populace had enjoyed under the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan. “In spite of evil machinations, Nigeria has remained undivided; we shall remain one and `we dey kampe’ and the Jonathan administration has provided meaningful, feasible ideas to sustain democracy. “He has invested in the youth and developed national consciousness among them. The nation’s GDP has risen from 169 billion dollars in 2013 to 283 billion dollars today. “Food importation has reduced from trillions to the region of hundreds of thousands of dollars; Nigeria is the number one destination for foreign direct investment in Africa; our oil is witnessing a projection. “Come rain, as it has fallen now or come sunshine, we stand behind Goodluck.’’ Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom said “everyone keeps saying I’ve performed well and that there is uncommon transformation in my state. I didn’t do it in a tenure; I am in my second tenure. “For Nigeria’s total transformation, one tenure is not enough. He has put measures in place to stop gas flaring, decided to address the problem of the north-east by building schools for almajiri. “He has been the most distracted but the most focused president; has faced Ebola squarely and made Nigeria the biggest economy in Africa,’’ Akpabio said. The convener, who is also the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, said the rally was a platform to “create synergy and an interface among all GSG to strengthen our bonds of unity. “In spite of our challenges, our bond remains unshaken. I commend you all and your presence on the social media, print, airwaves and other platforms has not gone unnoticed’’. Ahmed, who also read out the communique after the event, said the GSGs resolved that the president had performed well to the satisfaction of Nigerians and in the interest of citizens, should return in 2015. “He should step forward and contest in 2015. The PDP should nominate him for the presidential elections and as leaders, we endorse him for the presidential elections. “This is signed by the leaders of the more than 7,000 groups.’’ Prof. Jerry Gana, also a PDP chieftain, commended the groups for assembling for “a good course; a good man of a good nation’’. Among other names, he called Jonathan “an energiser to the private sector; a mobiliser of goodwill; defender of justice and driver of transformation agenda’’. ***He said that Jonathan must succumb to the pressure to run for elections in 2015. Former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, applauded the GSGs for “coming here today in our thousands even when nobody gave you a kobo to be here. “Mr President, the voice of the people is the voice of God; the people have spoken. They want you to speak soon; don’t delay, they need a response to their demands”. Hajiya Baraka Sani, the Special Assistant to the President on Agriculture, said politics was about development, not repeating past mistakes. “Our elders have always said we are the leaders of tomorrow but tomorrow never comes; Mr President is the link to the tomorrow we want,’’ Sani said. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, who was the special guest of honour at the rally, said “even the rain cannot stop us. “I am particularly excited because I’ve not seen a rally where Nigerians have defied the rain. The rain started, stopped and we stayed back; no one has eaten or drank anything since morning. “What people have been asking after since morning is the return of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, even the opposition supports Goodluck. I commend the political adviser. It is not easy to register more than 7,000 groups”. (NAN) www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/come-rain-come-sunshine-stand-behind-goodluck-ahmadu-ali/ |
The former Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Mohammed Danjuma Goje, was on Monday quizzed by the state Police Command for campaigning unlawfully in parts of the state. Goje, now at the Senate who, it was learnt was invited by the state Police Commissioner Abdullahi Kudu Nma, for embarking on political campaign at a time there still exist a blanket ban on political activities. The Senator, who was detained for over two hours at the state Police Command, spoke to newsmen shortly after his release. He said: “I wasn’t campaigning but was rather consulting my constituents to know their problems and look into how I can assist them within my power and available resources.” Goje used the opportunity to call on law enforcement agencies to be fair and just to all Nigerians. “We are calling on the authorities and security agencies to be fair to all political parties. The Nigerian constitution allows for the existence of different political parties.” Goje pleaded. He however said the discussions he had with the Police were fruitful, as they were able to understand themselves. Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Fwaje Atajiri however revealed that the former Governor was only invited for questioning because he was moving about campaigning with a large number of followers, who were wielding dangerous weapons. “Senator Goje was invited by the Police for a chat, which went peacefully. He came into town at the weekend, gave us a letter that he was attending a wedding but later we got to know he was holding a campaign rally at Kumo in Akko Local Government Area and some hoodlums were there with all sorts of dangerous weapons.” He said. www.punchng.com/news/police-detain-goje-for-early-gombe-gov-campaign/ |
The crisis in All Progressives Congress in Ogun State deepened on Sunday as one of the special advisers to the Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Mrs. Abimbola Lanre-Balogun; defected to the Peoples Democratic Party. Lanre-Balogun, was Special Adviser on Environment to the governor until Thursday last week, when she resigned her appointment. Explaining the reason for her defection, at a PDP stakeholders meeting at the Goodluck Jonathan Political Centre in Ijebu-Igbo, Lanre-Balogun, said she was tired of enduring the style of governance being adopted by Amosun, which she described as “family affair.” She further alleged that Amosun was “running a government of me, myself and my family.” www.punchng.com/politics/amosuns-aide-defects-to-pdp-2/ |
Members of the Northern Elders Council, which is sympathetic to the second term ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan have blasted the members of the Arewa Consultative Forum for criticizing the President over the security situation in the country. The group, which is being led by Alhaji Tanko Yakasai said at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, that it was wrong for the ACF, which is chaired by a former Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomasie to always criticise the Federal Government. Yakasai, who spoke on behalf of the group, alleged that the ACF had been taken over by those he described as desperate opposition politicians. He said there had been a change in the activities of the ACF since Coomasie became its chairman. Yakasai said, “We wish to observe that since the emergence of the current leadership of the ACF, there has been a derailment and non-compliance with the mission of the founding fathers of the forum. “A motley crowd of opposition politicians have hijacked its machinery. It is becoming more and more isolationist even within the region. “This has greatly degraded the ACF.” Asked if he was speaking on behalf of the majority of the northern region, he said no, adding that he was only speaking on behalf members of the NEC. He said members of his group regretted the “way and manner the ACF chairman addressed the President in his rodent press conference. “To say that ‘President Jonathan doesn’t like the north’ is outrageous and uncharitable. And to say that he has failed, is untrue.” He said this statement has confirmed the allegation that the ACF leadership has derailed from the original aim of those he said established the forum. He said Coomasie has also confirmed the allegations of partisanship and the claim that the ACF was hob-knobbing with opposition elements and unrepentant critics of the Jonathan administration. www.punchng.com/news/northern-elders-council-blasts-acf-over-attacks-on-jonathan/ |
So living on pension is what Buhari DOES for a living? That means he's not productive, depending on what is given to from the sweat of other Nigerians. that is called parasitism. When u say he's paid what d current president is paid, it's d basic salary, without d allowances. and how much do you think d basic salary is? It's not more dan 3million naira. That means Stephen Keshi is richer than him. My friend who works wt Shell is richer dan him. and none of them lives as flambouyantly as Buhari. Try to come up with something else as Buhari's source of income, not pension. It's an insult on him! |
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and close associate of the former Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, has declared that former Vice- President, Atiku Abukakar and Kano State Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso, cannot defeat President Goodluck Jonathan in a the presidential contest in 2015. Obono-Obla, who made the delaration on the much-talked about presidential ambitions of Atiku and Kwankwaso, said they bereft of political morality and followership and cannot be fielded as presidential candidates of the APC. Obono-Obla, who functioned as the deputy national secretary of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), is of the view that given what he perceived as their short-comings politically, they should step down voluntarily for General Muhammdu Buhari to emerge as the presidential candidate of the APC. Making his stance known to THISDAY yesterday through a statement he issued tagged: ‘Presidential Candidate of APC Must Be an Authentic Opposition Figure,’ Obono-Obla described Atiku and Kwankwaso as politicians that lacked the political quality to defeat Jonathan should he be fielded as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Going down memory lane, Obono-Obla, a radical lawyer and anti-corruption crusader said: “Atiku Abubukar’s vaulting ambition led him into a collision course with President Obasanjo. Obasanjo side lined him and even made a spirited effort to dismiss him as vice -president when Atiku abandoned the PDP and started romancing with the opposition. “Atiku fought back and caused the Supreme Court to rule that under the Nigerian constitution a president has no power to remove his deputy. “Atiku finally resigned from the PDP and contested the 2007 presidential election on the platform of the then Action Congress (AC). In the election, he unexpectedly scored a distant third in the presidential race. “He failed woefully and spectacularly to re-enact his reputed political craftsmanship and shrewdness in the election as he performed poorly in his ‘catchment area’ - the 19 northern states. “In 2010, there was a spirited effort by opposition leaders in the country to come under one platform to save the country from the corruption, floundered economy, bad governance and dictatorship unleashed on it by the PDP. “The opposition leaders that masterminded the movement were Bola Tinubu, Buhari, Atiku, and Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa. Series of meetings were held to discuss the possibility of the opposition coming together to form a national mega opposition party that would be an alternative to the PDP. However, Atiku chickened out in the last moment. He returned to the PDP to seek a failed nomination under the platform of the party that left him badly bruised politically and demystified him as a political strategist. “Atiku opportunistically jumped camp from the PDP for the second time since 1999 and joined the APC after its formation early this year. He is presently one of the aspirants for the presidential nomination. But, he surely does not fit in my permutation of a genuine and authentic opposition leader that should be given the presidential ticket of the APC. “Atiku does not have what it takes to defeat President Jonathan. He does not have a strong support base. He even lost Adamawa (his own state) in the PDP presidential primary election to President Jonathan in 2010.” On the aspiration of Kwankwaso to fly the presidential flag of the APC in 2015 Obono-Obla said: “Another aspirant for the APC presidential ticket that does not in my view fit the bill of a genuine and authentic opposition leader that should have the nomination for the presidential ticket of the APC is Kwankwaso. “He came to national limelight in 1992 when he was elected the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in the botched political transition programme of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. Kwankwaso is a founding member of the PDP. “He became Governor of Kano State in 1999 and was one of the governors that introduced the controversial Sharia law in the country after the return of democratic civil rule. He is widely regarded as a protégé of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who would do nothing to hurt Obasanjo. After he lost the 2003 general election to become a second term governor of Kano State, President Obasanjo appointed Kwankwaso Minister of Defence from 2003 - 2007. “Again, in 2007, Kwankwaso was appointed by the then President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as a member of the governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to represent the interest of the North-west geo-political zone. So, Kwankwaso is a dyed-in-the-wood political conservative that had enjoyed political patronage of the PDP now masquerading as a progressive after he joined the APC early this year. “A President Kwankwaso would surely turn a blind eye to the controversial investment of a whopping $16 billion itowards the resuscitation of the comatose power sector by president Obasanjo in 2005-2007 that went awry because of graft and corruption. “In the 2003 general election, Kwankwaso lost his re-election bid when he was trounced by Malam Ibrahim Shekarau of the defunct ANPP. “Political pundits are of the view that Kwankwaso lost to an obscure Shekarau in 2003 because of the enormous and tremendous political goodwill and support Buhari enjoys in Kano State. Buhari has consistently won presidential elections overwhelmingly in Kano State. In the 2011 he scoreed 2, 193, 206 votes (82.04 per cent). Buhari won Kano State in 2003 and 2007 general elections with wide margins. “It is widely believed that in the 2011 Kwankwaso won the governorship race in the state because he cleverly urged the people of Kano State to vote for Buhari in the presidential election. “Undoubtedly, Kwankwaso does not have the infectious followership Buhari commands in the North. So, his support base in the North is suspect and if he is picked as the presidential candidate of the APC, President Jonathan with a huge war chest of funds obtained from ‘business people’ and individuals that enjoy the patronage of the federal government coupled with the support of the police, security service and the army would make a mince meat of him.” The associate of Buhari, one of the leaders of the APC offered an advice saying, “In the light of the above, the likes of Atiku and Kwankwaso should humbly step down for Buhari (who with Bola Tinubu are the grand masters of opposition politics in Nigeria today) in the forthcoming presidential primary election of the APC. Kwankwaso and Atiku are younger than Buhari. Let them wait until 2019 when Buhari would have bowed out of politics after cleaning and rejuvenating the country for a younger person.” Obono-Obla had last week declared that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, is not qualified to contest the presidential election in 2015 on the platform of the party. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/2015-presidency-atiku-kwankwaso-can-t-defeat-jonathan-says-buhari-s-associate/189049/ |

Onyebuchi Ezigbo The founding National Chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and a prominent Kano politician, Senator Rufai Hanga, yesterday doubted the possibility of the former Head of State, General Muhamm adu Buhari (rtd) emerging as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In an interview with journalists in Abuja, Hanga also said some factors and intrigues might prevent both the former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, from picking the presidential ticket of the opposition party. Speaking on the politics of the APC presidential candidacy, the Kano- born politician, who had worked closely with Buhari to float CPC just before the 2011 general election, said from the look of things, Buhari appears to be losing grounds to Kwakwanso in the North-west. “I can tell you that Buhari did not move to APC with the genuine CPC structure. All those CPC structures are with us and we went with them to the PDM. And that is why when we decided to put a stop to our relationship with the PDM, more than 15,000 members brought back their membership cards and dumped the party. “So you see the posture and unfortunately, I am not happy about it, but that is why Buhari is in deep trouble because he did not move to the APC with the real CPC structure. It is a naked fact that Buhari is greatly disadvantaged and no matter what anybody says, he would not win under a free and fair primaries,” he said. However, efforts by THISDAY to get Buhari’s spokesman, Yau Darazo, to responsed failed. However, one of the key political associates of Buhari in the CPC and leader of the APC in the South-east, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, responded to Hanga’s assertions, insisting that Buhari is the de facto candidate of the APC. Okechukwu said though Hanga was entitled to his view in a democracy, he should know that Buhari is the signpost of the anti-corruption war, pro- people programmes and egalitarian society the APC is constructing for Nigeria. “I am surprise that Hanga is feigning ignorance to Buhari’s vote bank of 12 million that was exhibited in 2011 presidential election via a micro CPC, a vote bank, which only needs supplement from other members of the broad based APC. Hanga is making an assumption that since Buhari does not have the money to share, that the APC leadership and membership will be carried away by ‘stomach infrastructure’; that is a wrong assumption. “Buhari is the de facto candidate coming through consensual agreement, especially now that President Goodluck Jonathan has almost locked down South-south and South-east. Buhari accordingly is the only person who can lock down North-west and North-east, “ he said. But Hanga who apparently lost a bitter struggle to retain Buhari’s favour noted that even as things stand, the former general had not been able to put any of his loyalists in the APC organ at the national or state level. “If Buhari had gone with his people, they would have had positions within the APC, but I do not think that Buhari has got even a messenger in the party at the national level, Kano or any of the state. “And even in Katsina State, his home state, there is still trouble because elections took place and his people could not win because all the politicians that would have made him hold the structures and win in these places are with us. “This is why I maintain that the APC is not a merger but an acquisition. A merger is supposed to be based on equal partnership. It is a pity and my heart bleeds over his present ordeal. Though he has no structure in the party, he has the masses. “Unfortunately the masses cannot do anything for him if he has no party structure with which to run as a presidential candidate. It is a naked fact that Buhari is greatly disadvantaged and no matter what anybody says, he would not win under a free and fair primary. “Buhari does not have a political structure, in politics, you have to have a structure for you to make any impact. However, if he can be made a candidate, he has a lot of followers who strongly believe in his ability rightly or wrongly who want him to become president because they believed once he becomes president he will arrest all the richmen and all the ills of the country will disappear. On the possibility of the Kano State Governor stepping in to clinch the APC ticket, Hanga said Kwankwaso would find it very difficult to win the presidential election. “Kwankwaso is not a presidential material. I am an experienced politician, not a bootlicker or someone who will like to sing praises in order to get patronage. I speak the truth. I believe in Nigeria and I want Nigeria to be governed well. If you are looking for a president who will be a true Nigerian and effective in office, Kwakwanso is not, “ he said. He said because Kwankwaso is in the good books of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Kano-born politician will not be able to agree to any truce between him and Atiku, thus making it difficult for any consensus agreement. According to the former CPC chieftain, Atiku should not be deceived by the much publicised make-up between him and Obasanjo, adding that the former president will still not support his wining the APC ticket. Hanga, who said his assessment was from a neutral point of view, assured his supporters that he would soon decide which way to go as far as politics is concerned. “For now, we are at the point of decision-making, trying to assess the situation and to choose where to go. No, do not make any fast conclusions about our moving into the PDP yet. I just cannot go into a party that I am not invited to or recognised. I will rather stay out and be neutral,” he said . www.thisdaylive.com/articles/buhari-cannot-win-apc-presidential-primary-says-hanga/188666/ |
