Ukraine joining NATO and having missiles that can reach Moscow (the capital of Russia) so fast that the Russia military would not have time to prepare, is the bone of contention. And yes Ukraine was going to join NATO, Putin had asked for assurances that Ukraine would not join NATO, but he was rejected. As a leader would you leave the security and sovereignty of your nation to hope or chance that Ukraine would not join NATO? refrain from lies. Putin said Ukraine is not a sovereign nation. You think is easy to join NATO when Ukraine hasn't even meet the criteria. NATO is an organisation created to contain Russia.
Ukraine joining NATO and bringing the NATO military hardware and missiles right to the doorstep of Russia is the bone of contention. And it is completely unacceptable, because it threatens Russian sovereignty.
Putin has repeatedly sort assurances that Ukraine would not join NATO and that NATO would stop expanding towards Russian borders, but he was ignored now Putin is reacting and many people are crying foul, what a world.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO and won't be even in next 10yrs. Putin your personal Lord and savior said Ukraine is not a nation. Therefore Ukraine has no sovereignty that is bone of contention here. Putians like you should put things straight the way your Master said it. Russia is not that strong nation ..they posses large cache of nuke weapons which nations are afraid of.

NATO needs to be overhauled. Some nations are not really committed to NATO example Germany, Hungary and others. Some others have agenda like France. I tell you, people just keep saying rubbish about NATO to justify Russia expansion. Even most of the lands that Russia is occupying today, they stole from their neighbours, it has been a conquering instinct that has informed Russian foreign policy for many centuries before. Go and read about Russian expansion history, it was not until they got to Alaska in North America and Asia around Chinese borders with strong resistance from China before they stopped. Russia had to give up Alaska to USA because it is just too far away from their capital in Moscow. Throughout its history, Russia has always been conquering its weaker neighbours. This attitude of Russia is what is driving its neighbours toward NATO recently.

Is it even fair that Russians are occupying that much landmass (over 17 millions kilometers squares) that is very rich in minerals and energy resources that is called Russia today? I will say Russia is more or less a continent dominated by just 140 millions people.
