ABUJA—NATIONAL Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Professor Adewale Oladipo, yesterday, said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo destroyed an expired party membership card and not the new and authentic card being issued by the party. He spoke yesterday when he received a group of students mobilization team led by Comrade Takun Olarewaju visited the party to express their support for PDP and its Presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan. Oladipo explained that the card which Obasanjo tore was an old one signed by former acting National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje and not the authentic card which has the signatures of PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu and himself, Prof. Wale Oladipo as national secretary. He spoke as the party boasted that it would shock the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the South West. Addressing journalists yesterday in Abuja, PDP Deputy National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus said that with PDP campaigns and its pedigree, President Jonathan will win the March 28 presidential election. “We have the statistics that shows since 1999 that we have been consistent so what we have done is to re engineer our support at our base and they are ready for elections and we will win this election,” he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/obasanjo-destroyed-an-expired-card-pdp/

ABUJA – THE Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mr. Mohammed Sada Tuesday said that the Federal Government through the Assets Management Company of Nigeria, has perfected necessary arrangements to sell the Delta steel company to an automobile firm. Meantime, The Senate Committee on Mines and Power has lamented over the state of electricity supply in Nigeria and summoned the generation and distribution companies to appear before the committee on Tuesday March 3. The Minister of Mines and Steel Development who stated this when he appeared before the senate committee on Power, Mines and Steel, to defend his ministry’s 2015 budget, said that though the ministry was not involved in the sale, it was in close partnership with AMCON the government agency handling the sale. Sada recalled that the company had been in the hands of a private investor but was retrieved by AMCON but was now set to be sold to another investor who is interested in the automobile industry. According to the minister, “Now AMCON is in the process of selling it and I am aware there are quite a number of people that have written letters of intent that they are interested. What interests us in the ministry is that those interested are people that are interested in automobile development. “We believe in the system now that someone who has interest in developing a value chain around the company is showing interest in buying it. We have no role to play by the way, they are consulting us as experts in the industry and we have had several meetings with them to guide them. “The last time I had a meeting with the MD of AMCON he assured me that in the next couple of weeks, they are going to have somebody they are discussing with a view to selling it over” He further clarified issues relating to fears of future claims to the steel company by any other private investor and said that all pending issues have been resolved. Sada further explained that AMCON had given the initial company the opportunity to pay back the loan but the company was unable to do so and the grace period had long lapsed. The minister said, “There were no previous claims, Delta steel was a privately owned company, the company took loans from the local banks, and by Nigerian Law, AMCON was put in place to make sure that banks do not fail. “So, AMCON bought over the loans of that company, they gave them a payment schedule which they failed so AMCON has no issue with anybody. Our concern is steel protection, Delta Steel Company still has the latest technology, whoever is buying the company can start working immediately.” The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo at the meeting said vandalism, which has remained the bane of power supply was subsiding because the ministry was engaging communities to protect installations. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/fg-sells-multi-billion-naira-delta-steel-company-to-automobile-firm/ |
Tears flew like the stream on Tuesday at the burial site of Bayelsa eight prominent female politicians and a driver who died in a fatal accident that occurred on Valentine Day at Ahoada. The deceased women and the driver, Mr. Kelechi Oyenkwuru, were buried in four graves at the Gloryland Cemetery, Azikoro, Yenagoa, amidst lamentation and dirge. While the coffins containing the remains of three deceased persons were committed to one grave, others were buried in twos in three graves. The deceased politicians interred on Tuesday were three relations of the President, late Consider Amadi, a cousin; late Elizabeth Allison- Oguru, wife of the Secretary to Bayelsa State Government (SSG) and late Clara Abila. Others were – Ayakpo Otolo, Elizabeth Nisakpo, Ginbra Pamowei, Ruby Benjamin, Acha Pere- Kalama. The funeral which was conducted by the state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Isreal Eke, was coordinated by the Deputy Governor of the state, Rear Admiral John Jonah (rtd). Most of the mourners were dressed in black attire apart from the SSG, Prof. Oguru, and members of his household who wore white garment. The cemetery erupted in cries and wailings shortly after the remains were driven to the graveside by nine ambulances. Earlier at the special funeral service held in honor of the deceased by the government at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre, President Goodluck Jonathan lamented the loss of the politicians. He said the state lost eight of her best on the Valentine Day tragedy, adding that their death came as a rude shock to him. Jonathan explained that the event was initially scheduled for last Saturday but was moved at his instance to Tuesday to enable him pay his last respect to them. Paying glowing tributes to the deceased, President Jonathan said he had a personalities relationship with almost all the women involved in the accident. He described the day of the incident as a black Saturday that engulfed the entire state. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/bayelsa-female-politicians-driver-buried-in-four-graves/ |
By Emma Amaize It is notorious information that residents snooze with their two eyes open at some communities in the South-South region of the country, as gangsters manifestly unleash terror on the ill- starred people. *Militants What is, however, off-putting is that security agents do little or practically nothing in most cases to check the irritating infringement. A number of communities are really scandalous for the malady. In Delta state, Ekpan in Uvwie local government area used to be the hotbed of criminality, but Kokori in Ethiope- East local government area has snatched the reprehensible record of the riskiest community in the state. Efforts by security agencies to dislodge the rampaging criminals in the last two years, particularly after kidnap and armed robbery kingpin, Kelvin Oniarah, was apprehended in 2013, had been largely ineffective. The situation has degenerated to the extent that one could be captured for between N5, 000- N10, 000 ransoms in the community. However, a villager told Niger Delta Voice, weekend, that the Kokori Bakassi had sacked the criminals. Despite the mouthed feat, it still remains the most feared community in the state. Amagba community, blessed with vast expanse of land is the most volatile community in Edo state. The state of affairs in the community is quite worrisome. Youths, mainly cultists not only parade the streets with arms; they determine who rules the town to protect their money- making interests. The police in the state are weary of the frequent cases of unrest in the area while residents are mortally afraid of the troublesome youths. In Rivers state, cultists have made life excruciating for the people of Ibaa, Omoku and Buguma communi-ties. Countless residents had fled the towns for fear of cultists. In Bayelsa, the chanciest places to be are the Azuzuama, Lobia and Igbomotoru, Ogbia-Nembe- Brass waterways of the state. The Joint Task Force, JTF, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC are battling the sea pirates, but so far, it is no retreat, no surrender. Call Calabar South local government area, a traditional worshiper in Cross –River state is prepared to swear that Jesus is Lord; it is as precarious as that. In Akwa-Ibom state, Itu-Mbak Itam is a stranglehold of criminals and despite attempts by the police to demobilize them, they remain sturdy in the area. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/prologue-10-most-dangerous-communities-in-south-south/

The Defence headquarters , Monday, disclosed that following the air and ground assault to flush out Boko Haram terrorists from Baga, its cordon and search operation has revealed some terrorists disguising as women. A statement signed by Major General Chris Olukolade said, “The searches are also yielding more discoveries of arms especially bombs hidden in various locations, especially Baga town. “Apart from those captured in the course of fighting, many arrests of terrorists hiding in the town are being made and troops are still busy interrogating the suspects. “Meanwhile, in furtherance of the mission to clear terrorists from all their enclaves by the military, the Nigerian Air Force has stepped up its air bombardment of identified targets in Gwoza, Bama and Sambisa forest, preparatory to other phases of the mission. “The air strikes have been highly successful as they achieved the aims, hitting vital targets with required precision. “Terrorists are now in disarray as they scamper to escape from the impact of air bombardment of their locations in the forest. Having successfully liberated Baga where the terrorists have been marauding, the troops’ attention has now been focused on consolidation of the security of the area to pave way for return of citizens. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/baga-terrorist-who-disguised-as-woman-caught/

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has disclosed that, contrary to claims in some quarters, any certificate obtained from the Kaduna Satellite Campus of the Ambrose Alli University is fraudulent and a scam. Deputy Director Press of the NUC, Ibrahim Yakassai disclosed, this to The Nigerian Times when our reporter called to confirm the status of the institution and certificates earned from it. He said: “It is fraudulent and a scam. There is no such thing like Ambrose Alli University, Kaduna Study Center. The NUC is not aware of such.” The Nigerian Times recalls that the Sunday Trust Newspaper in the story, ‘Now, Hajiya Aisha Buhari steps out’, published January 18, 2015 had reported that the beautiful wife of General Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had bagged a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (Kaduna satellite campus). She later proceeded, based on the same degree, to obtain a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Strategic Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna. The NUC in a directive in 2001, under former Executive Secretary Peter Okebukola to all Vice-Chancellors, had directed all university satellite campuses to be shut down. While most Universities complied, few others were adamant, leading to another directive by the present Executive Secretary Professor Julius Okojie, to re-affirm the initial directive that all universities in the country running external campuses (satellite campuses) be shut down. A satellite campus, according to the NUC guidelines on which basis the illegal ones were closed down, “must not be more than 200 kilometres from the main campus,” “must not be located in a state outside the state in which the main campus is located,” “must have staff of the satellite campus directly or indirectly appointed by the main campus in line with laid down academic standards.” According to Sunday Trust, Mrs. Buhari enrolled in the undergraduate programme of the Ambrose Alli University and received lectures at its Leventis Building satellite campus, Kaduna. The Newspaper also reported that she holds a National Certificate in Education (NCE) from the National Teachers Institute (NTI) alongside a Diploma in Beauty Therapy at the Carlton Institute of Beauty Therapy, Windsor, in the United Kingdom and a certificate course from the French Beauty School, Esthetique Academie Dubai. She is a member of the United Kingdom’s Vocational Training and Charitable Trust and the International Health and Beauty Council. Speaking to The Nigerian Times, a former coordinator of one the satellite campuses of the university who asked to be anonymous, said while some campuses were able to insert records of some students of the satellite campuses into the general students’ records at the main campus, others were just issued certificates without recourse to the parent school. He said while the certificates of those whose records where successfully entered into the school’s main record could claim some level of validity, the others remain invalid. He said: “The campuses started in 1998 and were all officially closed in 2002. “Some of the campuses at the earlier stages would get someone from the main campus in Ekpoma to invigilate the examinations and under some arrangements would then register the students’ particulars in the record of the university. After this, those certificates got a value of validity. “However, after sometime some centers started issuing certificates to their students in the name of the parent university without any recourse to record keeping and so when employers or schools of post graduate studies contacted Ekpoma for verification, the records of most of them were not found. These developments finally led to the NUC’s hammer on those centers.” Every effort to get responses from the Registrar of the University, Mr. Ojo Maliki and Public Relations Officer of the university, proved abortive. While mails where not responded to, calls from our reporter were treated with rude and evasive responses. A University officer, who craved anonymity, told this newspaper that Edo being an APC state, the authorities are extremely careful not to get caught in Nigeria’s fractious political party rivalries. nigeriantimes.ng/news/nuc-declares-aisha-buharis-certificate-fraudulent/

Mike Omeri, director-general of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and coordinator of the national information centre, has revealed that Boko Haram militants are massing up in training camps across the northeast to launch attacks on the general area. Omeri, who made this disclosure at a press conference in Abuja, emphasised that the massing up of militants in target areas was usually a harbinger for attacks. “In the general effort to contain acts of insurgency in the northeast and secure the entire area for the forthcoming general election, the centre wishes to alert the general public on very recent intelligence reports, which indicate a considerable movement of Boko Haram recruits from such locations as Geidam, Mairi and Dupcha (all in Borno State) to training camps within the general area,” he said. “Previous major attacks by insurgents, including the siege on Bama and Monguno military bases, were preceded by such massing up of fighters in training camps within the proposed targets. “This recent development, which points in the same direction, has also been alluded to by the Boko Haram group in its recent boast about having a 30,000 to 50,000 strong force to disrupt elections in Maiduguri.” However, Omeri assured the public that the Nigerian military forces had been fully mobilised and deployed against the insurgents who are being chased and roundly subdued. “Therefore, we urge the general public to exercise a high level of vigilance and also support the effort of the military to ensure hitch-free elections and a return to normalcy in the general area, soonest,” he added. “We also seize this opportunity to restate government’s commitment to keeping the country and her citizens safe from those who seek to destroy the nation. “In addition, we urge the civil society, politicians and everybody to avoid disruptive and inciting statements, while assuring the citizens of regular update on the successes scored by our military and security forces in the fight against terror in the north east.” http://www.thecable.ng/bharam-training-camps-plan-attacks |
An insight has been provided into the debate at the National Council of State meeting of February 5, 2015 where the issue of whether or not the general election should be postponed was extensively discussed. Writing in his column in THISDAY on Thursday, celebrated journalist and former presidential adviser Olusegun Adeniyi, revealed that contrary to media reports, the council did not direct Attahiru Jega, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to go ahead with the polls. He gave an account of the positions of President Goodluck Jonathan and Muhamamdu Buhari, the respective presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC), on the postponement. Adeniyi, who served the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as special adviser on media and publicity, also gave details of the contributions of Ibrahim Babangida, former military president, as well as Babatunde Fashola, governor of Lagos state, and Liyel Imoke, governor of Cross River state. Rochas Okorocha, governor of Imo state and a member of the APC had told the media that the council gave INEC the go-ahead to hold the election. But Segun Mimiko, governor of Ondo state and a member of the PDP, had earlier told the media that INEC was asked to decide on whether or not to hold the elections as scheduled. Adeniyi wrote: “At the meeting, Jega presented his report, reiterating that he was ready for the polls. The first person to speak after his presentation was the NSA, (Sambo) Dasuki, who harped on the renewed efforts by the Multinational Forces to dislodge the Boko Haram insurgents and the need to shift the elections forward. The service chiefs and the Director General of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) followed with similar presentations. “With the floor now open for discussion, Buhari was the first to fire a salvo against the idea to have the elections rescheduled. He said all the reasons adduced by the military do not warrant postponing the elections, especially when, according to him, soldiers have minimal role to play in the election process. “With Buhari done, the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, presented what appeared a detailed position of the APC as to why the elections had to go ahead. He looked at the possible implications of such a postponement from both the legal and political prisms, with the conclusion that it would not bode well for the country and the president. “However, the Cross River State Governor, Mr Liyel Imoke countered Fashola’s arguments with what also appeared the PDP position as he went beyond the issue of Boko Haram to that of the preparedness of INEC. Some of the issues he raised included the ‘lopsidedness’ in the distribution of PVCs nationwide, the fact that the Card Readers to be used by INEC had yet to be tested and that the electoral officials to use them have not even been trained. “At that point, according to sources, Jega sought to respond and was given the floor. He explained that most of the misgivings being expressed have been factored into INEC plans. He, however, added that it was unrealistic to expect a hundred percent turn-out of voters at elections as there is no such thing anywhere in the world. To this, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Godswill Akpabio, reportedly countered that Jega was wrong.” Akpabio, according to Adeniyi, said there is a difference between people “who may choose not to vote even if they have PVCs and those who cannot vote because they have been denied what ordinarily should be their rights. He said elections cannot be credible in situations where millions of people could not get what would enable them to exercise their franchise”. The popular columnist continued: “In asking INEC to go ahead with the polls since the commission said it was ready, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, added that the advisory role of the Council of State does not extend to election matters. To that, the president, who had evidently been well-briefed, drew the attention of Tambuwal and that of the meeting to the Third Schedule (Part 1) of the 1999 Constitution, especially Section B (6) which states that the Council of State ‘shall have the power to (A) advise the President in exercise of his powers with respect to the…(4) the Independent National Electoral Commission (including appointment of members of the commission).’ “In his own intervention, General Ibrahim Babangida argued that since INEC said it was ready for the polls, the real issue before the Council was on what to do about the four states where the security agencies said they needed more time to deal with the insurgency. Babangida now asked whether it was feasible to conduct elections only in 32 states. “The president interjected quickly that such election would end in fiasco. I have it on good authority that some people in the administration had suggested this idea to Jega in November last year and he said any such election that excises a section of the country would not pass the test of credibility or even for that matter, legitimacy. So the president knew that succumbing to such an idea would be politically suicidal for him and he rejected it outright. “However, from the way the meeting went, it was evident that positions had been taken along party lines. At the end, the responsibility as to what to decide was pushed to INEC but the real drama was announcing the ‘decision’ arrived at because for all practical purposes, nothing was decided as to whether or not the elections should go ahead or be postponed. “With Governors Olusegun Mimiko, Rochas Okorocha and Bala Ngilari asked to brief the media by the president, the three rushed to the press room to grab the centre chair. Mimiko got there first and said no decision was taken and that INEC would consult and announce whether to postpone the elections or not which was the most accurate position as to what transpired. “However, immediately Mimiko stood up and they all appeared to be leaving, Okorocha grabbed the chair that the Ondo State Governor had been sitting on and also started to brief the State House correspondents. He said the Council had decided that the elections should go ahead. While that was not a true reflection of what happened, that was the slant reported in the media, which to be honest is a reflection of the mood of the public. http://www.thecable.ng/revealed-jonathan-buhari-ibb-fashola-said-council-state-meeting-poll-shift |

Over the years, some relationship tips have been repeatedly offered by those who think they know, to those who feel they need them. That these tips are popular does not mean they are actually true or effective. Every relationship has its ups and downs, and there are always friends and family on the side with endless tips and pieces of advice to share. Over the years, some relationship tips » have been repeatedly offered by those who think they know, to those who feel they need them. That these tips are popular does not mean they are actually true or effective. Here are 8 common relationship tips which you would do well to ignore if you really want your relationship to succeed: 1. Love Is All You Need: Sure, love is crucial in a happy and successful relationship. But having the idea that love is all you need is semi-ridiculous. Have people forgotten about respect, trust, loyalty? Love doesn’t conquer all. It’s one of the main ingredients in a partnership, but to say that’s all you need is misguided. The recipe includes much more and without the other ingredients, the finished product won’t come out just right. 2. Love Doesn’t Happen When You’re Looking For It: Tell this to the millions of people involved in online dating. Who even started telling this lie? This statement is not only annoying, but it’s infuriating to the people in the world who are actually looking for love. Just because a person is open and ready to find his or her match means that it won’t happen? False. 3. Wait Three Dates To Have Sex: Planning on when to have sex based on the number of dates is just plain silly. Dating is not a game where one plus one equals two. There’s no exact science. Having sex shouldn’t be contingent on how many times you’ve seen your date. It should be whenever you WANT to. Whether that’s the first date or the fifteenth, it’s your decision to make for yourself. 4. Couples Shouldn’t Argue: We're not saying couples should be down each other’s throats every single night but it’s normal to have some arguments here and there. Couples that don’t fight at all probably aren’t truly communicating. It’s healthy to have arguments because it means you and your partner are talking things through. You are molding two lives into one, so there are bound to be some moments of tension. Embrace it in a healthy way. 5. Never Go To Sleep Angry: You can throw this old relationship advice out with yesterday’s junk mail. The idea that you and your partner should never go to sleep upset at each other is outdated and nearly impossible. There will be times you two are upset with one another, and that’s okay. You don’t need to rush making things “nice” again just because it’s bedtime. Sometimes a little sleep can do the body good. 6. Everyone Deserves A Second Chance: The only people that say this are probably the ones that want a second chance. Sure, some people deserve another chance. But, to say everyone does is absurd. You have the right to decide that for yourself. 7. If Your Partner Is Jealous It Means He/She Loves You: Feelings of jealously in a relationship can be normal, but acting on that jealousy is another story. One that reads like a final chapter. If your partner is looking through your phone, that doesn’t mean he or she just loves you so much, it means he or she has trust issues. It’s speaking to a bigger issue within the relationship. 8. The Best Way To Get Over Someone Is To Get Under Someone: Indicating that the best way to get over a previous lover is to have sex with a new person is foolish. Sex can be a fun distraction in the moment, but it’s only temporary. Getting down with someone new won’t help you in the long run. You need to deal with your emotions about your previous partner before moving forward. The best way to get over someone is to actually do the work of getting over that person. http://pulse.ng/relationships/love-and-dating-8-popular-relationship-tips-you-should-totally-ignore-id3434441.html?utm_campaign=art-love-and-dating-8-popular-relationship-tips-you-should-totally-ignore-jan26&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_content=&utm_landing=&utm_place=&utm_format= |

In an interview with SaharaReporters, a close associate of former President Olusegun, who asked for anonymity, said there would be “political earthquake” when the former president releases his three-volume autobiography by the middle of December. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo The source, who said he is one of a very few circle of people privileged to have looked at the autobiography, disclosed that Mr. Obasanjo comes out swinging at President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, and former Governor James Onanefe Ibori of Delta, among others. According to the source, Mr. Obasanjo’s book, which is titled “My Watch,” lays out the various ways in which President Jonathan has failed as a leader. “Chief Obasanjo shows how President Goodluck Jonathan has failed in economic policies and in the fight against Boko Haram.” He added: “Instead of trying to move Nigeria forward, the president has allowed his personal and sectional agenda to pull Nigeria back.” Asked why Mr. Obasanjo recently described Mr. Jonathan’s performance as “below average,” the source said the former president’s public rating of the incumbent president “is actually mild.” He added: “Wait until Baba’s [Mr. Obasanjo’s] book comes out. He exposes the yansh [behind] of Goodluck Jonathan. He shows that Jonathan is confused, that his wife is the person ruling Nigeria, and that the president is paranoid most of the time.” Our source added that Mr. Obasanjo was disappointed at President Jonathan for only listening to a few Ijaw people and a small circle of court jesters who tell him that his critics nurse personal animosity against him. “Was he elected to rule only Ijaw people?” our source asked. He then added: “Can you believe that the president [Jonathan] once told Baba [Mr. Obasanjo] that he has no time for Boko Haram attacks because Boko Haram are his enemies who are killing themselves?” The source revealed that Mr. Obasanjo’s book also focuses on how President Jonathan and the late President Yar’Adua wrecked Nigeria’s economy by allowing their close associates to engage in unfettered stealing of the country’s foreign reserves. Our source disclosed that the former president’s autobiography also details acts of ingratitude by Mr. Yar’Adua and Mr. Jonathan, two men he “installed in power,” in the words of our source. “Chief Obasanjo’s book exposes how he was betrayed by the same two men he installed in power.” The book accuses the late Mr. Yar’Adua of colluding with former Governor Ibori to implicate Mr. Obasanjo in serious crimes. “Instead of continuing where Chief Obasanjo stopped to improve the power sector, Nigeria’s railway system and so on, President Yar’Adua wasted his time instituting probes into what Baba did during his tenure,” said the source. The source stated that former President Obasanjo discovered that the Jonathan administration was responsible for goading his daughter, former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, to denigrate him in a public letter released in December 2013. In the furious public letter, Ms. Obasanjo described her father as “a liar, manipulator, [and] two-faced hypocrite.” According to the source, “President Jonathan thought that he could destroy Baba by recruiting his daughter to attack him, but Baba showed that he is above them.” He added that Mr. Obasanjo believes that President Jonathan lost his way when he allowed former chairman of the PDP’s board of trustees, Tony Anenih, into his inner circles. “Baba worked with Chief Tony Anenih and knew what kind of person he is. So when the president began to depend on Chief Anenih, Baba knew the president is finished,” the source disclosed. Our source said the former president has used the opportunity of his exhaustive autobiography to also beam the searchlight on Mr. Atiku, who served as vice president to Mr. Obasanjo for two terms. The two men fell apart towards the end of Mr. Obasanjo’s first term. During the second term, Mr. Obasanjo sidelined Mr. Atiku, with the two men trading accusations of corruption. In the end, Mr. Atiku worked behind the scenes to scuttle the former president’s third term ambition, even though our source disclosed that Mr. Obasanjo restates his position that he was never interested in changing the Nigerian constitution to run for a third term. In retaliation, Mr. Obasanjo ensured that his former VP’s presidential aspirations were thwarted. Even though Mr. Obasanjo has had several private meetings with Mr. Atiku since they left office, our source disclosed that “Baba will never support Alhaji Atiku to rule this country.” He said the former president’s biography highlights Mr. Atiku’s character flaws, including the former VP’s widespread acts of corruption which, the source said, covered various sectors of the economy. Asked whether it was possible to mend the rift between President Jonathan and Mr. Obasanjo, the source asked, “How can?” He then added: “Baba will do everything possible to make sure that he [Mr. Jonathan] does not return to power.” Our investigation revealed that Mr. Obasanjo’s book, which will be released worldwide on December 12, is published by Farafina, one of Nigeria’s leading domestic publishers with headquarters in Lagos. source: http://saharareporters.com/2014/11/29/new-book-obasanjo-skewers-jonathan-yar’adua-atiku

Abuja – Rep. Friday Itulah (Edo-PDP) on Tuesday in Abuja expressed support for the Federal Government’s efforts to extend the emergency rule in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. Itulah told newsmen that there was need to intensify efforts to ensure that the insurgency currently confronting the country was addressed. According to the lawmaker, “I think it is worth it as long as the reason for the extension has not been realised. “There is need to extend the emergency rule. “Some aspects of it also need to be revisited to make the fight more effective. “I think it is working because if there was no emergency rule, the situation would have been worse. “That was why I said Federal Government needed to revisit some aspects of the emergency rule to make it better. “The house is supposed to reconvene on Dec. 3, but since this is a national emergency, let us see how it goes,’’ Itulah said. Similarly, Mr Simeon Omaliko, State Chairman, African Democratic Congress (ADC), in an interview said the extension was inevitable. “When your house is burning, do you go to sleep?’’ He said that the Federal Government was adopting civil approach in combating insurgency, to prevent possible killing of innocent citizens. Mr Mba Chinwendu, a lawyer, said that the fight against insurgency required a collective effort. According to him, “Nigerians are always quick in blaming the president rather than supporting the fight against this menace’’. Section 305 of 1999 Constitution provides for the imposition of a state of emergency in the country or any part of it. It empowers the President to issue the declaration by way of official gazette. It also provides that a two-third majority of the National Assembly must ratify the executive proclamation within two days, if the legislators are in session, or 10 days, if they are not. However, the House of Representatives, which is expected to rectify the proclamation of state of emergency, is currently on recess since Oct. 28 and expected to resume on Dec. 3. A Federal High Court in Abuja granted an injunction stopping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers from reconvening the house from recess. Justice Ahmed Muhammed said the PDP legislators could not take a decision to reconvene the house and also that all parties to the suit must maintain the status quo. The ruling came after members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the house filed a motion on notice, asking the court to stop the Federal Government, PDP and their agents from reconvening the house until Dec. 3. The emergency rule was first declared in the affected states on May 14, 2013 by President Goodluck Jonathan over the continued activities of insurgents in the three states. The decision to extend it for the third time was taken at a meeting of the National Defence Council presided over by Jonathan on Monday. A small boy named Akpos lived in a village in Warri, Nigeria. None of his classmates liked him because of his stupidity, especially his teacher, who was always yelling at him, "You are driving me crazy Akpos!" One day Akpos' mother came to the school to check on how he was doing. The teacher told his mother honestly, that her son is simply a disaster, getting very low marks and had never seen such a dumb boy in her entire teaching career! The mother was shocked at the feedback, withdrew her son from the school and even moved to another town! 25 years later, the teacher was diagnosed with an incurable heart disease. All the doctors strongly advised her to have an open heart operation, which only one surgeon could perform. Left with no other options, the teacher decided to have the operation, which was successful. When she opened her eyes after the surgery, she saw a handsome doctor smiling down at her! She wanted to thank him, but could not talk. Her face started to turn blue, she raised her hand, trying to tell him something but eventually died! The doctor was shocked and was trying to work out what went wrong. When he turned around, he saw our friend Akpos, working as a cleaner in the clinic, who had unplugged the oxygen equipment to connect his phone charger! Don't tell me you thought that Akpos became a doctor? |

Pastor Tunde Bakare, founder of the Latter Rain Assembly in Lagos has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo was responsible for the numerous problems Nigeria plaguing Nigeria at the moment. Speaking on Sunday with newsmen, shortly after delivering a speech, entitled: “ The Nigeria of My Dream ” at a well attended church service to celebrate his 60th birthday, Bakare said Obasanjo needed to be told some hard truth. Pastor Tunde Bakare “ He who wants to hear, let him hear. I am going to drum what needs to be drummed. I think Obasanjo needs to hear some things before the house collapses on him, because he is responsible for the problems we face now,” he said. The pastor who expressed doubt over the 2015 election said it was not feasible because of Boko Haram insurgency, Nigerian Tribune reports. He explained that the country needed to take care of 2104 before talking about 2015 as it would be unwise to hold elections without dealing with the fundamental problems of the country. source: http://www.naij.com/325399-nigerias-problems-pastor-tunde-bakare-accuses-obasanjo.html |
Morocco will be barred from the next two Africa Cup of Nations as punishment for refusing to host the 2015 edition in January-February, Confederation of African Football president Issa Hayatou said on Saturday. “We are going to stick to the rules, that means elimination from the next two Nations Cups,” Hayatou told France’s L’Equipe sports daily. “On top of that there will be the financial and moral damages to calculate.” Morocco are facing a US$20 million (about N3.4b) fine for refusing to host the 2015 Cup in its scheduled January 17-February 8 slot over fears of the spread of the deadly Ebola epidemic. It was never imagined that two schools could be targeted by bombers within two days in Niger State , but it happened. The first was a tertiary institution – Federal College of Education, Kontagora – while the other was Maryam Babangida Science College named after a former first lady, Maryam Babangida, by the government of Dr. Mua’zu Babangida Aliyu. Two bombers were involved. That of the Federal College of Education, Kontagora was perpetrated by a female and the mission was accomplished but with low casualty while that of Minna by a male was aborted. Maryam Babangida Science College is a female college planned to be a model school. On the fateful Thursday, the students were at the assembly ground not knowing that there was a sinister move meters away by a bomber. At about 7.30 a.m., a female teacher hurrying to school suspected strange movements in the bush. She also perceived the odour of Indian hemp which sent a signal to her that something strange was happening nearby. This led her to quickening her steps, but ahead of her was a young man carrying a school bag who pretended as if he was answering nature’s call. Then her phone rang and this caught the attention of the suspect who stopped her and threw some questions at her in Hausa. Suspect- Where are you heading for? Teacher- To school for today’s job. Suspect- Are you not aware that there is no school today. Teacher- I am not aware because nobody told us of any holiday. Suspect- Whether there is holiday or not, I want to advise you to go back home now in your own interest if you don’t want to lose your life! It was at this point that the teacher knew that the man had a sinister mission. She immediately put off her shoes and rushed to the school premises to alert the principal and other staff of her encounter. The suspect was dressed in the school uniform, covering her head with Hijab, thereby pretending to be a female student. PANIC Confusion enveloped the school premises immediately, but the situation was calmed by the authorities. By the time people rushed to the scene, the suspect had taken to his heels. The police and other security agencies were informed and took over the security of the school with the gates closed to visitors and movement in and out restricted. When our correspondent got to the school, some officials of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) , a pick up van of the army, police and SSS were directly opposite the principal’s office, strategizing while normal classes were going on. Principal of the school, Hajiya Fatima Madugu, who also spoke with our correspondent, said, “Just help us thank God for the alertness of our staff and intervention by God. The mission of the suspect was to disguise as one of our students and sneak to the assembly ground to carry out his dastardly act but God intervened. Before we could mobilise to the scene, the suspect had fled but we immediately alerted the police and other security agencies who mobilised to our compound.” The female teacher told our correspondent that as the conversation was going on between her and the suspect, fear has gripped her and she was left with no option than to take to her heels. The state police spokesman, DSP Ibrahim Gambari, confirmed the incident but said the attempt should not be seen as an invasion by Boko Haram. “‘The suspect could be a lunatic but, not withstanding, our men have been drafted to the school for further investigations and I can tell you that the bush around the school has been combed and nothing incriminating found with no arrest made’’. Meanwhile, the Niger government has suspended morning assembly and other religious gatherings in all schools in the state in order not to attract the attention of criminals. Similarly, because of the porous nature of Maryam Babangida Girls Science College and similar schools, all girls schools in the state will be fenced by next year in order to check insecurity to the affected schools. the truth is that APC strongest candidates are in the south, but they decided to produce a northern candidate by all means. |
2015: THE FACTORS, THE GLADIATORS The political atmosphere in Nigeria is reaching its crescendo, as different groups and personalities tries to grab what they can get. Briefly, as usual, let me give you my possible prediction of events, factors and political gladiators that may define their different ludus in the build-up to May 29, 2015. In this phase, I will focus on states in the South South/East. In ABIA STATE, one needs not be reminded that Gov. T.A Orji is one of the worst governors in the world since the death of the biblical King Herod. And this rot has been helped by the docile and lukewarm attitude of Abia people. However, this may not deter the PDP from claiming another round of victory in the state, cos opposition parties in the state are almost non-existent. Moreso, the clamour for an Ukwa/Ngwa candidate by the governor is viewed as justified and hence may portend victory for the ruling party. Meanwhile, the governor's reported backing of the relatively less popular Okezie Ikpeazu might either make or mar his chances of enthroning his choice of successor come 2015. Former Gov. Orji Kalu remains the most audible anti-Ochendo voice in the state. IMO STATE. In all sincerity, Gov. Rochas Okorocha still commands the largest followership among all guber aspirantss in the state. Comparatively though, his popularity has slightly waned owing to his defection to the 'alien' APC and his less than per performance in policy implementation. On the part of the PDP, Emeka Ihedioha is likely set to beat other top aspirants like Chris Anyanwu and Ikedi Ohakim to the party's ticket, owing to his position, allegiance to Aso Rock, financial chest and his Mbaise origin which has never produced a governor. But he will require very massive mobilization and 'field work' to unseat a master strategist like ORO. In RIVER STATE, With Barr. Nyesom Wike set to become the party's flag bearer, the stage may have been set for the APC to extend its reign. This is hinged on the fact that the ordinary Rivers resident and indegene sees Wike as more of a politician than a leader. Moreover, Wike's ascedency will be seen by the people as another 8years of servitude to the Ikwerris, hence the clamour for power shift to the Ogoni or Kalabari axis. If Abuja remains indifferent to this and with Amaechi weighing a Dakuku Peterside or Magnus Abe candidacy for the APC, we will likely see a revolt by other aspirants who may join forces wit the APC to get back at Wike, and then rejoin the party later on. This state is bound to record the highest case of rigging by both parties in 2015. BAYELSA STATE will not be having its guber elections next year, but other elective positions will sure be a taste of supremacy between Gov. Dickson and the new 'Madam Fix-it' of Bayelsa politics, H.E Patience Jonathan, who are currently entangled in a cold war. However, a very large proportion, if not all of the decisions will be made by Her Excellency. Ofcourse, HSD wouldn't want to disagree with her on that, except he fancies the 'Amaechi treatment'. Let me also remind you that in Bayelsa, the opposition exists only on paper. Governor Godswill Akpabio of AKWA-IBOM can easily be termed the most powerful governor in Nigeria. This is owing to his charisma, loyalty and unfettered access to the powers the be at the Rock. Hence the political battle is within the PDP and is between the formidable Akpabio warhead Vs the Akwa-Ibom PDP elders coalition led by the trio of Obong Victor Attah, Ufot Ekaette and Don Etiebet. With the coercion of the PDP NWC to enforce zoning in the state in favor of Udom Emmanuel, his preffered candidate, Akpabio is already winning. Notably, the overwhelming strenght of the PDP in this state has reduced the opposition to mere onlookers. Little can be said of the politics of CROSS RIVER STATE. Like Abia, the state does not feature very heavy political gladiators both local and national. Except an upset happens, Governor Liyel Imoke should have no much headache installing his successor. The opposition, however, may fight to the finish but how this may be upstage the PDP is still yet to be imagined. EBONYI STATE is another state that has witnessed less than average performance in human and infrastructural development. However, the concensus agreement of Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu is likely another smooth sailing for the PDP in the state. The opposition is visible in the state but it will take more than just visibility to upstage Chukwu, who boasts of both state and federal support. In ENUGU STATE, its the battle of wits and supremacy. With many political blocks in the state, one cannot be certain of whose structure will carry the day. The large Chime group is roaring, the Ekwerenmadu camp is fighting back, the Nwodo block is scheming, yet the Onongono faction is still much alive. However, with the purported selection of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi by the Chime camp, the combat has taken another dimension. Still yet, there is fierce contest for the Enugu West senatorial seat, where Chime is staging to unseat Ekerenmadu. Meanwhile, its not yet uhuru for Ugwuanyi, as there are very spirited moves to scuttle his ambition, from very powerful fronts. ANAMBRA STATE boasts of the highest number of political godfathers and money-bags. Hence no one man can claim authority in the state. Government House Awka may not be vacant for now, but the Senatorial, H-of-Reps and State Assembly is one that will throw up surprises. The three major political parties in the state; APGA, PDP and APC are very much on ground. The PDP however, may have an upper hand owing to its ability to maneuver, its array of heavyweights who could swing the votes in their favor and moreso the defection of Ex-Gov. Peter Obi to its fold. Gov. Obiano has not established a strong structure to ward-off the PDP machinery. Some even say his days as APGA governor are numbered, thus there is a likelyhood he's joining Obi to PDP, which might put the last nail on the APGA coffin. In DELTA STATE, he who plays the piper, dictates the tune. Unseating an incumbent or at least the ruling party in the State is no mean feat. This is stemmed from the fact that the thugs and ex- militants in the state, who to an extent play a major role in doing the 'field work' are only answerable to the highest bidder and who can challenge the incumbent when it comes to spending? The opposition DPP and APC boasts popular candidates who can do their homework but not the 'field work'. Gov. Uduaghan will also face a daunting task convincing Abuja on why he wants to replace Sen. James manager, who is also a GEJ loyalist, in the Delta South Senatorial race. Like Okorocha, EDO STATE's Gov. Oshiomhole was able to ride to power owing to his cult-like followership and popularity in the state and nation. Cos hitherto, he was like a David among political Goliaths. A state that boasts of ever-present and unretiring Tony Anenih may not be an easy ride this time for Oshio's APC. Like in Delta and Rivers, 'fieldwork' matters in this state. For the APC to win, it must present another candidate that commands influence like Oshio, else anything in PDP colours will be planted in Govt. House, Benin City. Note that the above are my percieved permutations and accessment of ongoings in these states. They may not finally reflect final occurences. More to Come... |
