Migration Steps for Medical Laboratory Scientists

STEP 1
To see if you qualify for this program, you need at least 60 points, goto:
http://www.immi.gov.au/Visas/Pages/189.aspx click on ‘Points Test’
http://www.immi.gov.au/Visas/Pages/190.aspx click on ‘Points Test’
http://www.immi.gov.au/Visas/Pages/489.aspx click on ‘Points Test’

STEP 2
Undertake IELTS test (International English Language Testing System). IELTS is conducted every month by the British Council across several towns in Nigeria http://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/ you will need an Overall Band score of 7.0 or better in either the Academic or General Training module of the test.
For IELTS preparation materials, you could go to; http://www.ieltsbuddy.com/

You can also opt for pte or toefl

STEP 3
Undertake Skills assessment by the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS). This is the rate limiting step for skilled migration to Australia as a Medical Laboratory Scientist http://www.aims.org.au/documents/item/88

Usually done in two stages:
A) Paper based assessment; you will submit your certificates and job references to AIMS for evaluation. At the end of this stage you will be classified as an MLT and invited to write the AIMS professional exams.
B) The AIMS professional exam takes place in March/September each year in several cities around the world. If are successful in this exams, then you are ready for STEP 4
For more info about this exam, course contents, sample questions or venues, please view this link: http://www.aims.org.au/services/aims-assessments/medical-laboratory-scientist

STEP 4
Submit an Expression of Interest on SKILLSELECT and receive an INVITE usually within 30 days

STEP 5
Apply for Visa, Do Medical & Police checks
STEP 6
Receive your Visa & Migrate
Depending on when you start, this process takes 12 - 18 months to conclude. See you in Australia

Thank you ma!
Can one work as an MLT while prolly doing an abridge course for 3months or thereabout, to sit for the assessment/qualifying exam over there in Oz to be converted/regularized as a MLS?

What about the labour market as proportionate to the MLS profession?

I went through your previous posts, and discovered some useful info. Where is the assessment written? What is the pass rate like? I discovered from your post that the exams are written March/September...

What of the application fee and materials/text recommended for reading and onward good performance?

I so wish you luck and God's speed in the exam. I will remember you in my personal prayers.

Pls wetin be one of your kids names, so I will address you as mummy bla bla bla cheesy
My dear, visit the site and know the requirements for the assessment. Once you are through with it, you may be found eligible for the examination which is held in different countries.
Note that there is no bridging course.

All right sir, would be waiting patiently for it. Jah bless you!
As u earlier stated, Canada immigration is not favorable for us because one will need a licence which is not straight forward.
Oz is a whole lot easier as licence is not required. All you have to do is be assessed by AIMS(australian institute of medical scientists aims.org.au). As long as u didn't get your degree in Oz, you will be assessed as an MLT. One is then required to take an exam in other to be assessed as MLS. I am presently at the stage of exam because no state is nominating MLT as of now. Once you pass, you will get positive assessment as MLS and can then apply.
Visit the aims website to know their requirements for assessment.

Pls Ozlanders and aspirants, do pardon me for quoting all this; I personally believe this could help someone out there to make informed decision as we all plan to better our lots despite economic downturn in Nigeria, though I believe God still has the interest of our their country at heart. We shall overcome!

I am also a Med lab scientist. I wi give you a low do

Dear all, I'm 28 going to 29 by Dec (I have a twin bro), still looking for job though..
I studied Medical Lab Science in Nigeria with 2yrs post qualification experience (1yr internship and NYSC).

I have painstakingly perused the requirements for migrating to Canada (under Express Entry) and Australia.

For my profession, the demands are quite herculean especially the issue of traveling to Canada for a qualifying exam, which takes place within stipulated periods of three (3) times a year, while that of Australia if am not mincing words only requires a three months abridging course for foreign-trained Medical Scientist before the issuance of licence all thinngs being equal.

Pls gurus, what should I settle for in terms of availability of jobs, less hassles to get a visa, PR, and less cost of pursuing this dream from scratch, better pay, etc?.

I am single and just want to make it in life within all legitimate means. I don't mind working for 18 hrs each day except sundays!

I sincerely solicit your legendary inputs cum advice @ mumy bossladymo1, NNBB2012,

bellong, malkinburg and other great minds.
I am also a med lab scientist.
I will give you a low down later, battery is very low.

As for BTA, I can't say for now because the exchange rate is skyrocketing everyday. So hold enough money when you come. Also don't rely on your Naija ATM, it will disappoint you with their new regulations.

As for good restaurants, None at Garhoud for African dishes but Continental or Indian cuisines can be found anywhere around you.

If you would want a cozy and quiet environment to have good Nigerian food, then just take a taxi to KIZA Lounge(Oud Metha) or you can use the Metro to Oud metha and then take a taxi 12 Dirhams to Kiza Lounge/Y-NOT Restaurant.

If you like eating and wouldn't mind the noise, ing you can find your way to Deira Mar as aket(Ask for African restaurants E.g Biggy,African Taste and some nameless ones also.

All the best.
thanks dear. as per hotel booking, which area should I concentrate on while considering the venue of the exam?

1. Which area do u advice to book a hotel closest to the venue and will still be accessible to good resturants?

In Dubai "good restaurants" and minimum BTA do not go together!
"Good" international food is not cheap!

Or by good do you mean mamma put type food?

Mrnilobrawn, this your links are really eye opening. They are also shaking my resolve but I will still apply for it. I have set my hand on the plow.......

Can one apply for remarking and apply to sit another test at the same time?
Remarking depends on how confident you are with what you wrote. Speaking and writing are both subjective so it can probably increase. Someone, I think in this forum, was very confident that his score in writing was low while other bands were from 8. He applied for remarking and the writing score increased from 7 to 8.
Yes, you can register for another exam while you await the outcome of the re evaluation.

@all, i finally got my ielts result today. L(8.5) R(9.0) W(7) S(6.5) Overall Band Score 8.0. Big disappointment cos it is not useful for its intended purpose. I need all bands to be a minimum of 7.0. The good part is that i don't need it until about 6 months time so i'm currently weighing my options.

I think the poor Speaking score might be down to my relatively short prep time, under 3 weeks and i was busy with other things at the same time.

Now i have a better idea what Ferdimako was going thru all this while.
Why don't you apply for remarking of the speaking section since it is subjective?

Without the exams, she will be classified as mlt which is only being sponsored by south australia. Passing the exams gives you the advantages of applying for 189 visa.

Hi,

Good to be a part of this Forum.

My wife is intending to migrate to Australia through the Skill Select Scheme. She is a Laboratory Scientist and just starting the process. She has this perception that she would only get high chances if she has a relative living in Australia.

Please can you advice in this regard on step by step process and also her chances of being eligible as she doesn't have any relative in Australia.

Thanks
Hi. I am also a ls. Ubktech listed all the steps needed in the past. You can read back or check his profile. There is no extra point to be gain if you have a relative, that is if you are interested in 190 or 189.

Thanks for the info....but I have a couple of questions because I plan to be in Kenya in about three weeks:

1. Can you please explain the exact procedure you went through before getting to Kenya?
2. What documents do I need to go with?
3. How were you able to get your ticket that cheap, because the cheapest that I have seen so far is about 157k
4. When exactly did you land in kenya; Can I get cheap good food around instead of eating at the hotel?

Regards
1. Bought ticket from ethiopian airline. Printed the letter stating my mission to kenya and obtained my yellow fever certificate. Boarded and landed at the airport where I obtained the visa at the POE.
2. Yellow fever cert, return ticket, hotel booking(although I was not asked), and some dollars.
3. I booked from the ethiopian airline office. I flew from abj. I believe flights are cheaper from there.
4. Landed in kenya at 3.20am although the stated time for arrival was 1.20am but we had to get to kigali first and spent an extra hour there. I don't know about food because I stayed with a family friend.

Yes, I am back. Travelled with ethiopian airlines, ticket cost approx 119k. Bought the ticket from the airline. Just book a ticket and book accomodation through booking.com. I saw kenya comfort hotel which is quite popular and it looked nice frm outside, besides it s nt so expensive. I just printed the letter that stated my mission and showed to thofficer. I was asked if I was there for tourism purposes. I was not asked of hw much I had with me and hotel booking.it was a very simple procedure.

Yes. Costs 50 dollars for single entry.I was there last 2 wks and was asked how long I will be staying and if it was for tourism purposes. No big deal in getting it. Was not even asked of hotel accomodation.
