Nairaland GeneralAgric Minister, Kyari, Praised For Efforts In Food Production by okrote4real(op): 5:51pm On Nov 14, 2024
A group called Whistle Blowers Forum Against Corruption, WBFAC, Thursday, hailed the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, over his doggedness and commitment to food production.

Speaking during a press conference held in Abuja, the National Coordinator, WBFAC, Dr. Olukayode Oladosu, described the Minister as a calm but focused goal-getter who is working assiduously to ensure Nigerians have access to affordable amidst the challenges saboteurs are posing to blackmail the President Tinubu-led administration.

According to Oladosu, the Agric Minister has come up with various policies to boost farmers’ productivity and profitability, and also has ensured there is strong synergy between State Governments and the Federal Government in line with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Renewed Hope Agenda.

The group which passed a vote of confidence on Senator Kyari, thanked President Tinubu reposing strong confidence on the Agric Minister, saying his efforts are yielding positive results.

He also pointed out that the Kyari-led Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have attracted investors to the sector, and many programmes are ongoing to address hunger in the land, including collaborations.

Secure $134m AfDB loan facility to boos farmers’ productivity

The Minister has been able to recently secure an African Development Bank, AfDB, $134 million loan facility to boost farmers’ seed and grain production. This was made known during the flag off of the 2024 National Dry Season Farming in Cross River State.

Injecting N309bn into economy in one year

We are also aware that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has been able within one year of the Tinubu-led administration injecting N309 billion into the economy, including job creation along various agricultural value chains.

Salvaging ginger farmers from impact of ginger blight

The Minister in his proactive nature has been able to salvage ginger farmers from the ravaging ginger blight epidemic by inaugurating the Ginger Blight Epidemic Control Task Force to intervene by proffering lasting solutions.

Implementation of NATIP

The Minister has demonstrated commitment to the implementation of the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Plan, NATIP, which has been instrumental to technological advancements, and empowerment of smallholder farmers across the country.

Efforts on agric mechanization

The Minister has been able to ensure facilitation of tractors and accessories to farmers across the country as he has engaged tractor manufacturing companies.

The group said: “We are aware of the giant strides of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari (CON) within one year of office, which makes him stand tall among his equals based on the doggedness and commitment he has demonstrated with the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi.

“With our careful observation and critical assessment of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, there has been tremendous efforts to galvanize the food system in the country, and with this sheer commitment we have seen there is a lot of impact in food production.

“Therefore, we commend the Minister for a job well done to ensure food on the tables of Nigerians, and no doubt Mr President in our own words reappointed and retained him to lead the agricultural and food security sector.

“We assure the Minister of our support to ensure food security is achieved under his leadership, and being a grassroots organisation we will ensure real farmers are empowered with the support from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

“We wish him well, and encourage him to improve on what he has achieved so far and touch more lives of Nigerian farmers and investors in the agricultural sector.”

Nairaland GeneralNUJ FCT Elections: Emeka Nze, Caleb Allegedly Hired For Dirty Job by okrote4real(op): 7:59pm On Nov 12, 2024
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Transparency Group has reiterated the need for a transformative change in the NUJ FCT Council come December 4, 2024.

This is coming following an alleged kangaroo briefing by Emeka Nze and Caleb Onwe both who are interested parties and Director Generals of chairmanship aspirants, Victorson-Agbenson Usiodamwen and John Chucks respectively.

Speaking for NUJ FCT Transparency Group, Prince Ugoeze Afonne urged members of the council to discountenanced the unfounded claims in the statement, saying that both Emeka Nze and Caleb Onwe are unreliable and unserious fellows that should be ignored as they are hired to do a dirty job and disrupt the electoral process.

The statement reads, "In response to the recent public statements by Emeka Nze and the so-called "Concerned Bonafide Journalists" group, it is evident that underlying personal interests and a lack of consistency in their allegations undermine the credibility of their claims.

"Emeka Nze, a key voice among these concerned members, has previously taken harsh stances against the very leadership he now aligns with, particularly in his outspoken accusations against the embattled Patrick Osadebamwen-led executive.

"Nze once accused this administration of alleged misappropriating forty million naira—a serious charge that aimed to tarnish the reputation of the leadership. It raises questions about his current motives as he appears to shift alliances to support this same group.

"The portrayal of NUJ National President Chris Isiguzo as fostering a “constitutional crisis” appears to be a misrepresentation intended to gain traction among FCT Council members.

"The accusation that President Isiguzo sought to destabilize the council’s upcoming election is unsubstantiated and misleading.

"They are grumbling and complaining because the NUJ national Secretariat is not playing to their script and card. We are aware of their failed efforts using royal fathers to pressure the National President to disqualify the leading aspirant and pave the way for their preferred candidates, Victorson and Chucks.

"The real issue lies in the proposal to register over 700 members of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Cooperative Society, a proposal, which the President rightly declined in order to uphold the integrity of the council’s electoral process. The aspirant who Emeka Nze is aligning with was directed to do a formal letter through the chapel, council, zonal and national officially. Instead he asked for a secret and discreet registration process.

"It is vital to recognize that if such a mass registration were allowed, it could influence the election unfairly, given that these individuals may not meet the qualifications for NUJ membership.

"Nze's support for this questionable proposal appears to reflect an agenda rather than genuine concern for NUJ's values or FCT Council’s integrity.

"Furthermore, the alleged "disruptions" at congress meetings are presented as strategic interruptions to paint the President negatively and push for a preferred outcome.

"These incidents appear orchestrated to create the narrative of chaos, thereby facilitating an environment where accusations against President Isiguzo can be easily believed.

"This is a tactic aimed at swaying the opinions of members rather than addressing legitimate concerns.

Meanwhile, In light of recent events and statements from Emeka Nze and his allies, it is increasingly clear that personal interests and loyalty to paymasters are driving their actions, not a commitment to the integrity of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). Emeka Nze and Caleb Onwe both leading campaign Directors for Mr Victorson Agbenson and Johnchuks Onuanyim (chairmanship aspirants) should be viewed as representatives of the interests of others rather than impartial voices in the council.

"Their allegiance to certain figures in the upcoming election speaks volumes about their true intentions. If there is anyone who should distance himself from the FCT Council, it is Patrick Osadebamwen, Ochiaka Ugwu, and their supporters, who were unanimously removed from office by a full Congress presided over by Osadebamwen himself.

"Yet, Emeka continues to cause chaos and attempts to present himself as a representative of the council’s concerned members, while he is, in fact, central to the crises that have repeatedly hindered progress within the council. Emeka Nze who is an Imposter suddenly became best friend to the immediate chairman of council after exposing the corruption scandal of Mr Patrick Osadebamwe led government involved in a 40 million naira scandal he queried at congress.

He said “ Mr Chairman the reason why there are stories about the 40 million naira deal is because your government has never given financial records and you lack transparency in your dealings” this led to the immediate chairman calling he to strike a deal.

"The sudden romance with the immediate past council chairman, led to a promise to make him the chairman of the credentials Committee, which was exposed and rejected at the Congress. Since then he has become a bitter man with an unhealed wound.

"The National Secretariat has maintained strict adherence to the union’s constitution. Ironically, the very individuals who praised council members as suitable leaders when they served their interests now label those same individuals as unqualified. The individual who oversaw previous elections and upheld democratic values in the council is now derogatorily referred to as a "quack" simply because he no longer serves their agendas. Such double standards reveal the short-sightedness and self-serving nature of these accusations.

"The authentic NUJ members in the FCT Council have made a clear decision to reclaim their council from those who would undermine it. Unfortunately, the rejected former leaders cling to any remaining influence, desperate to retain a foothold in the council. Their strategies, including resources allegedly drawn from external backers with political connections, expose their intent to influence the council’s leadership.

"As genuine leaders committed to the council’s future, we must stand firm and assert our position. The time has come for the council to prioritize integrity and transparency, and we, the true representatives of the council’s values, are resolute in taking back our council from those who seek only personal gain.

"NUJ is a professional organization dedicated to upholding the integrity of Nigerian journalism. Allegations must be substantiated with evidence rather than grounded in personal vendettas or electioneering tactics. The union’s leadership, including President Isiguzo, is committed to transparency and the fair, democratic election of representatives without the undue influence of personal interests.

"If the genuine concern of Nze and his group is the welfare of the NUJ, their focus would be on fostering unity and adherence to ethical principles rather than casting aspersions. Instead of crying foul about an imagined “constitutional crisis,” it is incumbent upon all NUJ members to engage in the democratic process with integrity, putting the interests of the union above personal ambitions.

"In the end, this attempt to destabilize the FCT Council reveals a desire for influence rather than accountability. True leaders unite rather than divide, and NUJ members must recognize that the stability of the union depends on collective integrity and truth, not on the shifting alliances of individuals whose motivations appear self-serving.

"Recall that the duo Emeka and Caleb had sworn that a woman cannot be in a leadership position according to the Ibo tradition while the immediate past chairman had sworn that over his dead body will a female gender lead the union.

"Recently after Emeka Nze's efforts to sway some journalists to support his preferred candidate for Chairmanship, Mr John Chucks failed, he turned back to term them as woman wrapper. It is not strange to us, as we are aware of his unreliable characteristics.

Unfortunately they are being remote controlled "by the immediate past chairman of council to the hatchet job without putting on their thinking cap. They have all been thrown into confusion in recent times as their efforts continue to meet a dead end. For every move they make and statements from him and his cohorts is the handiwork of the immediate past Chairman.

Also recall that Emeka Nze was said to have "been loaned the sum of N100,000 from the council purse nine years ago to travel to the US and to date couldn’t pay back the said sum. Now that all their evil machinations and mischievous attempts to stop the leading aspirant for.the chairmanship has failed, they are now crying foul like chickens beaten by heavy rains.

"According to reports by a former chairman of council, Emeka Nze years back as a nominee to a US trip from Blueprint, disparaged his medium, when he listed his medium Blueprint, owned by the present Minister of Information, as part of media houses that refused to pay salaries alleging that he was owed 8 months salary.

"He thought the forum would pay him but he was disappointed. This was after his medium approved monies for him to make the trip. He is a snitch, disgruntled and negative minded fellow seeking relevance and attention.

"The revolution is real they can't stop it. We reiterate that, the NUJ FCT Transparency Group is committed to peaceful, free and fair elections for the birth of a new NUJ FCT.

"Why is Emeka Nze and his cohorts scared of going to the poll?"

Ogar Solomon Ogar Slams Emmanuel Unah’s Appointment as Chief Press Secretary for Yala Council

Abuja-based media consultant and critic Ogar Solomon Ogar has launched a scathing critique of Mr. Emmanuel Unah’s recent reappointment as Chief Press Secretary (CPS) for Yala Council by Dr. Fred Okem. In a public statement, Ogar questioned Unah’s qualifications and readiness for the role, pointing to Unah’s previous stint in the same position between 2007 and 2010 under former Council Chairman Hon. Fidel Egoro, which Ogar described as “shabby” and “disastrous.”

“Emmanuel Unah’s appointment is the type of recycled old news that people will think is fresh while it’s not,” Ogar stated. “This is 2024, fourteen years after he left office, yet he is back again to do a job he doesn’t have a grasp of, and he doesn’t spend the time to learn.”

Ogar did not hold back in his critique, pointing out that Unah had ample time over the past decade to develop professionally and mentor young talent in journalism but apparently failed to do so. “Don’t you have anyone you have groomed in journalism to be recommended for this job?” Ogar questioned.

He continued, “There’s an enormous amount of work that goes into getting ready for this job, but consistently Unah does not have the mental content and energy to put in that level of work.” Ogar characterized Unah’s communication style as “garrulous, irritating, and abusive,” adding, “You are even more insufferable than we already knew completely oblivious, entitled, and not at all fit for the job.”

Ogar mocked Unah’s recent decision to add “Pastor” to his title, suggesting that a title change is no substitute for qualifications and readiness for a demanding press secretary role.

“Anyway, you need to take that job offer because I doubt anyone will want to hire you after the election,” he added, signing off his message with a pointed jab at Unah’s history in the role: “I wish you an unsuccessful tenure!”

Nairaland GeneralAgain National Secretariat Clears 3 Member FCT Credentials Committee by okrote4real(op): 6:17pm On Nov 08, 2024
The National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ on Friday cleared the allegations leveled against the 3 member credential Committee for the December 2024 FCT NUJ election.

In a letter signed by the National Secretary, Achike Chude, the Secretariat identified the three member committee as the authentic credential committee members with the mandate to conduct the election.

It reads " we have carefully gone through the petitions against Mr Henry Umoru and Sarah Odugbo with regard to their membership of the FCT Credentials Committee and noted the various allegations against them by Messrs Osaretin Osadebamwen, John Chuks Onuayim, and Victoson Agbenson. The petitions were written and delivered separately.

"A careful investigation of the complaints made against the duo did not produce any evidence to substantiate the allegations against them and the subsequent call for their disqualification from the Credentials Committee set up to supervise the FCT council election.

"The allegations against them were without merit"

"Consequently, in reiteration of our earlier directive, Mr Henry Umoru, Sarah Odugbo and Elizabeth Christopher Atteh are to resume their duties unhindered as members of the credetials committee. Kindly assist them in this process with the enabling environment to make the exercise a success.

"The Committee is to liaise with the National Secretariat going forward".

Recall that the embattled Patrick Osaretin Osadebamwen had petitioned Mrs Sarah Odugbo stating that the chapel failed to remit their check up dues a claim which was false.

Recall that the sum of 315 thousand naira was remitted to the coffers of the Union under the leadership of Emmanuel Ogbeche.

The former chairman of FCTA chapel Mr Kalu Emetu when contacted confirmed cheque was handed over.

The committee has been asked to liase directly the national body on matters regarding the election.

PoliticsCoalition Denounces Demands To Dismiss NNPCL GCEO Kyari by okrote4real(op): 1:46pm On Nov 06, 2024
A coalition under the auspices of Coalition of Civil Society Organisations Against Corruption, COCSOAC, Nigerian Professionals in Diaspora, NPID, and Bloggers respectively, came together, Wednesday, to vehemently condemned a section of the country calling on President Bola Tinubu to sack the Group Chief Executive Officer, GCEO, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Engr Mele Kyari.

The coalition made their stand known during a press conference held in Abuja, where the leaders including Kenneth Emea of Bloggers; Oluwatoyin Animashaun of NPID; and Mohammed Abdullahi of COCSOAC described the accusations levelled against Kyari as unsubstantiated and basically to derail the critical progress he has made in the oil and gas sector.

In an address read during the press conference, the coalition highlighted the landmark achievements by Kyari in the sector.

They said: “We are gathered here today to address the recent attacks and baseless calls for the removal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). These unsubstantiated accusations are nothing more than attempts to derail the critical progress that has been achieved under his leadership. We are here to stand in firm support of Mele Kyari and urge the President not to yield to these unfounded demands for his sack.

“Since his appointment as GCEO of NNPCL, Mele Kyari has been a transformative force in the Nigerian oil and gas sector, a sector that has long suffered from inefficiencies, corruption, and lack of accountability. Under his watch, there has been a profound shift toward transparency, professionalism, and operational efficiency. His stewardship has saved billions of naira, ensuring that NNPCL can finally act as a reliable and accountable player in the global oil industry while driving national economic growth. Kyari has demonstrated unparalleled commitment to cleaning up the sector, implementing key reforms that have restored investor confidence and positioned Nigeria on the path to energy self-sufficiency.

“One of the landmark achievements under Mele Kyari’s leadership has been the successful transition of NNPC into a limited liability company (NNPCL), operating with greater transparency and subject to industry best practices. This restructuring was crucial for creating a financially viable, market-driven entity that can compete with global oil giants. This historic shift is the result of visionary leadership and dedication to reform—a testament to Kyari's resolve in transforming NNPCL from a government entity into a commercially viable and profit-driven corporation.

“Moreover, Kyari has been instrumental in reducing the long-standing problem of oil theft, which has cost Nigeria billions of dollars annually. Through strategic partnerships with security agencies, he has championed efforts to curb this menace, enhancing the nation’s revenue base and enabling a fair share of resources for development. Kyari’s efforts are restoring accountability in the oil sector and demonstrating what can be achieved with principled leadership and a commitment to national interests.”

However, the coalition expressed pain and disappointment from some Nigerians who have failed to acknowledge rather intentionally are using a section of the media to disparage and condemn the NNPCL boss.

“We recognize that reform is often met with resistance, especially from those who have benefited from the previous status quo. The recent calls for Kyari's sack appear to be orchestrated by these interests, who are threatened by the transparency and accountability he has brought to the oil sector. But we stand here today to affirm that Nigeria cannot afford to reverse the gains that have been achieved.

Therefore, they called on President Tinubu not to heed to the calls to sack Kyari, “We call upon the President to remain steadfast and not succumb to these baseless demands. Nigeria needs leaders who are willing to challenge the status quo and work in the best interests of the nation, as Kyari has consistently demonstrated.

“In conclusion, we urge all well-meaning Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to lend their voices to support Mele Kyari and the reforms he has championed.

“Let us reject the divisive tactics of those who seek personal gain at the expense of national progress. The oil sector reforms under Kyari’s leadership have brought us hope and a renewed sense of purpose, and we must not allow vested interests to undermine these achievements.”

Foreign Affairs#uselection2024 : What To Know About US Electoral College by okrote4real(op): 9:17am On Nov 05, 2024
The U.S. Electoral College is a unique system established by the Constitution for electing the President and Vice President. Rather than using a direct popular vote, the Electoral College assigns "electors" to each state, with the number of electors based on the state’s representation in Congress (Senators + Representatives).

Here’s how it works:

1. Voters cast ballots in the general election: When people vote in a presidential election, they are actually voting for a slate of electors chosen by their party.

2. Electors cast their votes: The winning slate of electors in each state meets in December to cast their official votes for President and Vice President.

3. Counting and confirming votes: In early January, Congress counts these votes, and a candidate must receive a majority (at least 270 out of 538) of the electoral votes to win the presidency.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4VGaccsOn4?feature=shared

If no candidate reaches a majority, the House of Representatives selects the President, with each state delegation casting one vote.

Purpose: The Electoral College was designed as a compromise between a popular vote and a vote by Congress, aiming to balance influence across states and protect against direct democracy's potential risks. However, it has sparked debate due to cases where the winner of the Electoral College lost the popular vote.

Nairaland GeneralSex Tape: No Man Can Forget Your Past After by okrote4real(op): 8:35am On Nov 05, 2024
The recent leaks involving individuals in the spotlight, including cases from Equatorial Guinea, highlight a recurring theme: awareness and complicity in private recordings. Notably, several women involved were aware of being recorded yet chose not to object at the time. This behavior prompts an important conversation about accountability and personal boundaries.

If something feels wrong or uncomfortable, it’s crucial to address it immediately rather than later framing oneself as a victim once the footage goes public. This is reminiscent of the Tiwa Savage situation, where she was aware of being recorded but only raised concerns after the video leaked, describing her partner as a blackmailer. Similar cases have involved figures like Moyo Lawal and Oxlade.

Ultimately, these instances underline the need for vigilance in personal relationships and choices. It’s essential to be discerning about who you share intimate moments with, as actions often carry lasting consequences. The plea to overlook a publicized past can fall on deaf ears, as many people find it hard to disregard these revelations once they’re in the public domain.

PoliticsEconomic Hardship: Foreign Travel Drops By 60% In Lagos, Abuja Airports by okrote4real(op): 11:01am On Nov 04, 2024
Written by Yusuf Babalola, Ejike Ejike and Abdulmumin Murtala

The current economic headwinds in Nigeria have caused a significant decline in passenger traffic at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

LEADERSHIP Sunday investigation showed that outbound foreign travel dropped by over 60 per cent in Nigeria this year.

It was gathered that the continuous high rates of foreign currencies, especially the United States dollar, had made foreign travel very expensive for Nigerians, who usually embarked on overseas trips for holidays and weekend visits, which aviation stakeholders described as “frivolous or casual travels.”

Statistics from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other sources in the sector showed that in 2023, 2.04 million Nigerians travelled out of the country, but recorded a drastic decline in 2024.

According to insider sources, the number of passengers reduced from 2.04 million in 2023 to a paltry 816,000 from the first quarter (Q1) to third quarter (Q3), 2024, representing a 60 per cent drop in the load factor.

The statistics showed that a total of 2,856,000 million passengers travelled in 2023 and 2024, with a decline of 1,226,000, representing a 60 per cent fall in the current year.

Also, travel agents attributed the decline to the over 600 per cent increment in the prices of foreign air tickets in the last few years.

It was gathered that an economy seat to the United States of America that was N350,000 prior to the floating of the naira in May 2023 rose to between N2.7 million to N3 million, thereby, making foreign travel a necessity and no more a fun.
The above fare for US routes increased by N2,650,000, representing 57 per cent increase for air tickets.

Although, the president of the Association of Foreign Airlines Representatives in Nigeria (AFARN), Dr Kingsley Nwokoma, who corroborated LEADERSHIP Sunday findings, said foreign travels declined by over 40 per cent due to the nation’s economic conditions, the available data indicated 57.14 percent.

Nwokoma said holiday makers now seek cheaper alternatives because foreign travel is now a luxury.

He said, “It is true, traveling has declined by 40 to 50 per cent. The decline is due to poor showing of every other sector in Nigeria. It’s not limited to only the flying public, you need money to buy air tickets before you can go anywhere and holiday makers are now looking for cheaper alternatives such as going for vacation in the West Coast, Nigeria and when you go within West Coast buses or in their vehicles.

“It’s unfortunate, this is where we are, but we hope things get better because it’s a chain and it’s not limited to aviation. We hope things return to normal where families can all travel for summer.

“For instance, for a family of four to buy tickets, you will pay through your nose and parents have school fees and other important bills to pay. Even for local flights, from Lagos to Abuja is over N200,000 and to the South East, it is over N300,000; this is a reflection of our economy.”

Similarly, the group managing director, Dees Travels and Tours Limited, Daisi Olotu, said the high exchange rate had compounded the fortunes of outbound foreign airlines in recent times.

Olotu said, currently, only a few Nigerians can afford foreign travels due to the high cost of air tickets, adding that overseas travels are now a necessity and no longer for pleasure.

“Yes, it (foreign travel) has gone down by 40 per cent,” he said in a response to an enquiry by LEADERSHIP Sunday.

Olotu said, “No doubt about the drop because a look at any of the foreign airlines, you will see that they are half empty out of Nigeria, though this is low season.

“Also, the exchange rate is high and the airlines are charging in dollars. For instance, $1,000 is about N1.7 million with some fraction so that’s why it’s only a few people that can afford travelling.

“Dollar is not legal tender in Nigeria. So, we pay for goods and services in naira but with the exchange rate, if you are giving a fare of $1,500 that means you are paying about N2 million upward and only a few Nigerians can afford it.”

Olotu therefore urged the government to resuscitate the nation’s tourist sites, saying family travel and expenses now cost over N20 million.

“I will tell you that if it’s not important that you travel, you stay back and that’s why we are advising the government to work on our tourist sites because if they are okay, holidaymakers will stay back. A family of four will need N20 million to travel for holiday. Currently, travelling is on the high side and only a few can afford it.

PoliticsDangote: The Case Against High-Cost Fuel For Nigerians by okrote4real(op): 11:26pm On Nov 03, 2024
While it is commendable that efforts are being made to provide fuel domestically, selling at a high cost to Nigerians presents multiple issues that cannot be overlooked. The current pricing model, defended on grounds of international benchmarks and quality control, does not fully address the real economic challenges faced by everyday Nigerians, nor does it represent the potential of Nigeria’s resources to alleviate hardship for its citizens. Below are several critical points that argue against maintaining high fuel costs:

1. Benchmarking Against International Prices Is Inappropriate

Benchmarking fuel prices to international standards disregards Nigeria's unique socio-economic landscape. Nigeria is a country with vast oil reserves and the capacity to refine locally, which should provide significant leverage for pricing fuel affordably. The average Nigerian income cannot absorb the strain of fuel costs that are pegged to international rates. A country that produces oil should be able to insulate its citizens from volatile global market forces, not subject them to them. Continuing to price fuel at international levels will push even more Nigerians into financial hardship, exacerbating inequality and stalling economic growth.

2. Higher Fuel Prices Harm the Broader Economy

Fuel is a critical input in almost every sector of the Nigerian economy. High fuel prices directly lead to higher costs in transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing, ultimately driving up the cost of goods and services. This inflationary pressure hurts low- and middle-income Nigerians the most, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. Consequently, maintaining high fuel prices at the domestic level is unsustainable and counterproductive to Nigeria’s economic stability.

3. Potential Quality Concerns Are Not a Justification for High Prices

The assertion that lower-priced fuel from other suppliers may be substandard is an argument that should be addressed through regulatory action, not by pricing high-quality fuel out of reach. NMDPRA’s lack of laboratory facilities should prompt investments in regulatory infrastructure, rather than be used as justification for inflating fuel prices. Nigeria can maintain quality standards without imposing undue financial burdens on its citizens. If there are concerns about the quality of imported fuel, investments in monitoring and testing infrastructure would go further to protect the public than inflated prices.

4. Comparing Nigeria's Fuel Pricing Policies to Tariffs in Other Countries Misses the Point

Protecting domestic industries, as done in countries like the U.S. and Europe, often involves creating favorable conditions for industries to grow, such as subsidies or protective tariffs. However, the analogy fails in Nigeria’s context, as fuel is a necessity and is tightly woven into the fabric of the economy. Furthermore, Nigeria's refining industry is not yet competitive or resilient enough to justify such a pricing policy without harming consumers. Comparisons to the U.S. or Europe do not recognize the critical role that affordable fuel plays in Nigeria’s economy or the significant impact that high fuel prices have on the livelihood of its people.

5. Public Interest Should Be the Priority

Fuel is a public good that directly affects Nigerians' quality of life. Every Nigerian relies on fuel for daily life and economic productivity, from small businesses to public transportation. High costs restrict access to this essential resource, disproportionately impacting low-income households. In the interest of economic justice, fuel should be priced affordably so that it remains accessible to all Nigerians.

6. A Missed Opportunity for Domestic Production to Benefit Nigerians

Nigeria has the chance to leverage its resources for the betterment of its citizens, reducing fuel costs in ways that benefit the country holistically. By making domestically refined fuel affordable, Nigeria can reduce dependency on imports, strengthen local industries, and allow Nigerian families and businesses to thrive.

Finally, while it is understood that a certain level of revenue is necessary to sustain refinery operations, it must be balanced against the need for affordable fuel. Nigerians should not bear the brunt of high costs, especially when there is an opportunity for locally refined fuel to be both high-quality and affordable. If local refineries cannot offer competitive prices, then it is imperative to allow alternatives that do not compromise quality. Protecting the Nigerian people should be the primary goal, with strategic solutions that align with the interests and economic realities of Nigeria as a whole.

Nairaland GeneralJay Moni Promised To Sustain Giving Back To Society by okrote4real(op): 8:45pm On Nov 02, 2024
...commended by prominent personalities

A Lagos based rising musical artist, with Wayward Boiz, Chris Ogar (aka Jay Moni), Friday, revealed his passion is touching lives with the little he has been blessed with.

Jay Moni as fondly called, while making this known explained that he is also doing this to mark the 10th burial anniversary of his late father, Mr Raphael Ogar who hailed from Itega Ekpudu, Okpoma, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River, for the enduring legacies he left behind for his children while he was alive.

Meanwhile, on this special mission to turn the darkened hope and gloom faces of vulnerable Nigerians in Okpoma, headquarters of Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, Jay Moni and his thick entourage including the media and community members visited an orphanage, Divine Providence Home, Ogoja, to identify with them with surprise packages including foodstuff, toiletries, packs of detergents, noodles, rice and other items, which he handed over to the management of the home as his support to them and the children.

He and his entourage earlier were at the Ogoja Correctional Centre of the Nigerian Correctional Service, where he expressed and displayed love and compassionate concern. Jay Moni in his benevolence presented food items to the officers and inmates, and also went as far as clearing financial fines some inmates could not pay to regain their freedom, hence he became their succorer, as met the demands humbly presented by the inmates including clippers and generator set. Others were solar light to help pump water and medicine for their treatment, and this gesture made the entire correctional facility to erupt in unprecedented joy and excitement.

He also proceeded to the General Hospital, Okpoma, where he went to the patients to encourage them each in their sick beds, and did not stop at that but immediately paid medical bills for many indigent patients, including medical bills of patients with cellulitis (a skin disease), delivery through CS and a male patient suffering from Pelvic Ulcer Disorder (PUD), where the patients prayed for him as they immensely appreciated his timely intervention unexpectedly. His team also stopped at the health Centre in Okpoma and cleared the medical pills it the only patient as well as showed love to medical officials.

He said: "As Ogoja, Yala and Cross River boy, I have been doing a lot of charity out there in other states over the years, and this time around I felt it time to come down home to touch the lives of the people and where I come from.

"What really inspired is my past, when we couldn't feed as expected and talk more of now comparing with back then.

"You see our economy is down, and it has made a whole lot of things happening, which people get involved just to survive including a lot crimes, and in my won little way, which is not that I have much that God has blessed me and the only way is to give back to society because I don't think there is no charm or thing that is more than giving to the society.

"I am just passionate and concerned to give back to my community for the fact that my community is down and not that my community did anything for me but this is where I come from and it is from my heart.

"We are here at the Ogoja Correctional Centre in Cross River State, where I have handed over some food items and other essential needs for the inmates, and they are very excited. Nothing more than making people who had lost hope to regain hope and joy as they laugh, sing and dance, and basically it is done to the glory of God in fulfilment of His command to live your neighbours around and far away from you.

"From here we are going to the orphanage and also to the General Hospital in Okpoma where all other packages to intervene in the lives of the people would be handed over to them."

Also he (Jay Moni) disclosed that, "We are into music, lifestyle and fashion including artist mentorship and development, hotels, real estate, making videos, lines of clothing, and other legitimate businesses."

As part of activities marking 10 years of his father's burial, he was part of the spectators who watched the finals of a football tournament to celebrate the anniversary in honour of his late father. The finals was played by G Fortune Football club of Ogoja LGA and Golden Age Football club of Yala LGA, where G Fortune won 5 - 3 in a penalty kick.

However, he advised youth on desisting from crime, "My advice always to the youth is crime is not a way to survive but there are clean and cool means of survival including the social media where people are creating useful contents and making money for themselves and families.

"Discover your talents and work on what you know best and keep doing it because I believe one day you will arrive at the peak of your dreams."

Meanwhile, he urged government to listen to the cries of Nigerians, because it was Nigerians who elected them to be in those public offices they occupy, which "democracy is of the people, by the people, and for the people as we were taught while growing up as children. So they should try their best because people are really suffering."

Some prominent personalities in the State whom he visited expressed their deep impression of the transformation of Jay Moni's life and the wisdom and love he has demonstrated by coming down from Lagos to the grassroots he hails from by giving back to them, and promised to support his charity activities and other endeavours.

Nairaland GeneralAmb Coomassie Calls For Urgent Funding For Immigration To Secure Nigeria Border by okrote4real(op): 11:16pm On Nov 01, 2024
Amb Husaini Coomassie, a member of the retired Immigration Officers Association and the Head of Mission - Nigeria International Peace Commission, has called on the Nigerian government to increase funding for the nation’s immigration services to help secure Nigeria's over 1,800 porous borders. Speaking at the annual Comptroller General of Immigration (CGI) conference held in Jos, Plateau State, Coomassie emphasized the urgent need for sufficient resources to enable the Immigration Service to address complex border security challenges effectively.

During his address, Ambassador Coomassie pointed out that Nigeria’s borders, which span across vast and diverse terrains, have been historically difficult to monitor and control. He stressed that these porous borders are an avenue for cross-border crimes such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, and illegal immigration, posing serious security risks to the country. According to Coomassie, the lack of adequate funding has hindered efforts to patrol and monitor these entry points comprehensively.

To tackle these issues, Coomassie outlined several key operational requirements needed by the Immigration Service. He noted that staff welfare, especially those in the border areas, vehicles, modern surveillance equipment, arms, and ammunition, are essential to support border patrols and rapid response units.
Enhanced communication systems and real-time intelligence-sharing platforms are also necessary to coordinate operations across Nigeria’s expansive border regions.

Ambassador Coomassie called on government stakeholders to prioritize funding for these crucial resources, emphasizing that a well-funded immigration service is essential not only for securing the borders but also for protecting the lives and property of Nigerian citizens. He highlighted the need for new policies that could streamline funding allocation and ensure that immigration authorities receive the resources they require to fulfil their mandate.

Dr. Coomassie concluded his address by expressing optimism that, with improved funding and access to modern operational gadgets, Nigeria's Immigration Service could combat border-related crimes more effectively. He further urged collaboration among security agencies to strengthen border management and ensure national security.

The annual CGI conference is a platform where immigration and security experts gather to address the pressing issues surrounding border management in Nigeria, sharing insights and strategizing for a safer and more secure nation

For a long time, I thought the idea of young men marrying older women was just something you’d read about on social media or see reported on TV—a strange, far-off phenomenon that didn’t happen in our communities. But all that changed when I started attending friends' weddings at the registry.

It was eye-opening, to say the least: young, attractive Nigerian men, full of life and ambition, standing beside much older foreign women, exchanging vows and tying the knot. In other cases, young women are marrying men old enough to be their fathers.

The reality is clear: many young people across Africa, and Nigeria in particular, are so driven to find a way out of the country that they’re willing to go to great lengths—even unconventional relationships—to secure that opportunity. It speaks to the desperation some feel to leave by any means necessary, whether it’s through marriage or other methods, they just want to Japa.

When you ask these young men why they’ve chosen to marry women so much older, they insist it’s out of love. But a question lingers: if it’s truly about love, why aren’t they finding similar connections with older women here in Nigeria? Why do they only seem to “fall in love” with those who can offer them a ticket abroad? Could it be that foreign women have something our own older women in Nigeria don’t, or is there something deeper at play?

In the end, it’s a complex mix of ambition, love (or perhaps convenience), and the pursuit of a better life. It leaves us wondering what impact this trend will have on our society in the years to come.

The hustle is real 🙏

HealthHealth Indeed Is Wealth by okrote4real(op): 4:44am On Oct 26, 2024
The things we often take for granted are, in reality, the very things others yearn for. Yet, we forget that life itself is a precious gift. This past week has reminded me just how invaluable health is. I've been unwell, unable to speak due to a sore throat that left me voiceless. Thankfully, I’m recovering now, but it’s been a challenging journey.

Not only did I feel feverish, but my children also fell ill. They missed school for three days, which is unusual for them, as they rarely get sick. But when illness does strike, it’s as if it sweeps through all of them at once, overwhelming me as I juggle caring for each of them.

Usually, their cheerful noise fills the house, but this time, silence and stillness took over. I don’t like seeing them weak because it’s that joyful commotion that truly reminds me of their liveliness. Seeing them so subdued was a constant reminder of how much their usual energy brightens my days.

I took them to the hospital, and with some medication, they started feeling better. I am grateful for their resilience and the strong genes they’ve inherited; they don’t fall ill frequently, and even when they do, they seem to recover quickly.

While managing my own discomfort, I was deeply focused on their well-being. Parenting is indeed a unique experience—it’s a mix of pain and selflessness, where even when we feel unwell ourselves, our hearts are drawn to the needs of our children.

Moments like these remind me how we often overlook the blessing of good health. We may be tempted to complain when things are tough, yet we don’t always recognize the gift of wellness. When our health falters, we quickly see how much energy, time, and even money goes toward recovery. Imagine all that we could accomplish if we were free from these struggles.

As my throat continues to heal, I’ve gained a newfound appreciation for every part of my body. The smallest part, when it’s in pain, affects us profoundly. This experience has made me more grateful for each functioning part of my body, and for the simple, often unacknowledged gift of good health.

May God grant us continued health, strength, and peace, for indeed, health is wealth.

Nairaland GeneralKashifu Inuwa: Championing Nigeria's Digital Renaissance by okrote4real(op): 1:29pm On Oct 24, 2024
BY MUBARAK UMAR
In the rapidly evolving global digital landscape, nations must constantly adapt, innovate, and secure their technological ecosystems. Nigeria's IT ecosystem, under the stewardship of the Chief Information Technology Officer and Director General Kashifu Inuwa of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is emerging as a beacon of digital transformation. Through strategic international and local stakeholder engagements, Inuwa is steering Nigeria's digital sector toward unprecedented growth, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Recently, Inuwa's international engagements reflect his commitment to positioning Nigeria as a global digital leader. During GITEX Global 2024, one of the world's premier technology events, he delivered a keynote address on "Securing Africa’s Digital Future: Nigeria’s Cybersecurity Roadmap." In this address, he meticulously outlined Nigeria’s cybersecurity framework, a cornerstone of the nation’s ambition to foster a secure and resilient digital ecosystem.
Emphasising the critical role of digital innovation in economic diversification, Inuwa mapped out five foundational pillars: digital fluency, cybersecurity skills, robust policy frameworks, technological innovation, and cybersecurity innovation roadmaps. He left no stone unturned in highlighting Nigeria's commitment to closing the cybersecurity skills gap, securing data systems, and developing a national cybersecurity architecture aligned with global standards.
In addition to cybersecurity, Inuwa has shown a remarkable capacity to engage with international stakeholders, fostering collaborations that promise to boost Nigeria's digital ecosystem. His meetings with executives of the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) at GITEX 2024 exemplify this.
He engaged (DWTC) towards organising GITEX Nigeria 2025 to chart ways for inclusive stakeholder participation in the event, positioning Nigeria as a prime destination for global investors. He rightly argued that Africa’s largest economy, brimming with a vibrant youth population and a burgeoning tech startup scene, is ripe for value-driven investments.
In line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector through innovation, Inuwa has spearheaded collaborative efforts between NITDA and the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF). This strategic partnership aims to harness cutting-edge technology to address the myriad challenges plaguing the agricultural sector, from resource optimisation to improving productivity.
The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two entities marks a watershed moment in Nigeria's quest for food security. The goal is to integrate technology into agriculture, drive innovation, and ultimately enhance national food security efforts of the present administration.
Inuwa's local engagements are equally impressive. His keynote address at the Nigeria Govtech Conference and Awards touched the role of digital innovation in fostering economic growth and empowering citizens. He emphasised the importance of a comprehensive agenda focused on human capital development, digital literacy, and skills training, particularly in both formal and informal sectors. This vision aligns seamlessly with President Tinubu's commitment to leveraging technology to build strong institutions that enhance governance and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.
On a broader continental stage, Inuwa’s participation in the 3rd Moonshot Annual Tech Conference in Lagos, alongside tech leaders from across Africa, further solidified his status as a digital economy visionary.
In his panel discussion on "Building Digital Economies for the World," Inuwa articulated the need for governments to collaborate with the tech ecosystem in developing robust regulations that support cross-border data exchange within the continent.
He advocated for building Digital Public Infrastructures (DPI) to unlock the full potential of Africa’s digital economy, positioning Nigeria as a leader in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Inuwa’s leadership in promoting Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) was also front and center at the 17th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance (ICEGOV 2024) in Pretoria, South Africa.
Representing the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, Inuwa reiterated the need for scalable, inclusive, and secure DPI that builds trust between governments and citizens. He also introduced the African DPI Community, a platform for collaboration aimed at accelerating digital transformation across the continent.
His efforts in advocating for digital identity systems, payment platforms, and data exchange infrastructures have placed Nigeria at the forefront of DPI innovation in Africa.
Additionally, Inuwa’s active role in the global DPI discourse was further demonstrated by his participation in the United Nations General Assembly, where he contributed to the launch of the Universal DPI Safeguards Framework.
This initiative sets new standards for the design and implementation of digital infrastructures, prioritising public interest and promoting safe, inclusive, and interoperable systems.
Inuwa’s insights on Nigeria’s journey toward building a resilient DPI showcased the country’s commitment to harnessing technology for sustainable development, reinforcing the Federal Government’s dedication to supporting research and technological innovation.
In every sphere of his engagement, both local and international, Inuwa’s efforts are emblematic of a leader committed to digital transformation. His work is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda; and it is shaping the very future of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, ensuring that Nigeria’s digital future is both secure and prosperous, setting the stage for the nation to lead in the global digital economy.

CultureAl-‘ula: A Historic Oasis And Emerging Tourist Hub In Saudi Arabia by okrote4real(op): 2:40pm On Oct 23, 2024
By Mubarak Umar Abubakar
Al-'Ula, an ancient oasis city nestled in Saudi Arabia's Medina Province, is a living proof of the region's rich history and cultural heritage. Once a bustling market town on the route connecting India and the Persian Gulf to the Levant and Europe, Al-'Ula has been home to various civilisations that shaped its unique character. Today, this extraordinary city is at the heart of Saudi Arabia's ambitious plans to become a global tourism destination, attracting visitors with its archaeological treasures, stunning landscapes, and visionary development initiatives.
Al-'Ula’s historical significance dates back thousands of years, with human settlements in the region beginning as early as 5000 BCE during the Bronze Age. Its early prosperity was fueled by its strategic location on trade route, an essential network for transporting luxury goods such as spices, silk, and perfumes across the ancient world. The route connected regions as far-flung as the Kingdom of Aksum in Africa, Arabia, Egypt, and India, making it a vital stop for traders and merchants.
Archaeological evidence from the region points to the existence of several prominent civilisations. Al-'Ula was once part of the ancient Kingdom of Dedan, and later, the Lihyanite Kingdom, both of which thrived during the first millennium BCE. The oasis city also witnessed the influence of the Nabataeans, a nomadic Arab people known for their architectural achievements, most famously exemplified in Petra, Jordan. Al-'Ula became a cultural and economic hub in the region, bridging connections between the Arabian Peninsula and the Mediterranean world.
One of the city’s most famous historical landmarks is Hegra, also known as Madā'in Ṣaliḥ. This archaeological site, located just 22 kilometers north of Al-'Ula, was the first site in Saudi Arabia to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built more than 2,000 years ago by the Nabataeans, Hegra is often described as the "sister city" to Petra. Like Petra, Hegra is home to monumental rock-cut tombs and other structures that have remained remarkably well-preserved over the centuries. The site, now open to tourists after careful conservation, offers visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of the Nabataean civilisation.
Al-'Ula owes its existence to the fertile oasis that has sustained human life in this arid region for millennia. The palm groves and natural springs made it an ideal settlement for early civilisations. The old walled city of Al-'Ula, known locally as Al-Dīrah, still stands as a reminder of the city’s ancient roots. Surrounded by a dense cluster of mud-brick and stone houses, the city’s historic architecture reflects the survival strategies of its inhabitants, who adapted to life in the desert by utilising the region’s resources wisely.
The settlement's history is marked by the ebb and flow of power among various kingdoms and empires. The Dedanite Kingdom, which ruled the region during the 7th and 6th centuries BCE, is mentioned in ancient texts such as the Harran Stela, a document that describes the conquests of Nabonidus, the last ruler of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. In 552 BCE, Nabonidus launched a military campaign into northern Arabia, capturing key cities like Tayma, Dedan, and Yathrib (now Medina).
After the fall of the Dedanite Kingdom, the Lihyanites took control of Al-'Ula around the 5th century BCE. The Lihyanite period lasted for nearly four centuries until the Nabataeans rose to prominence in the region. The Nabataeans were eventually conquered by the Roman Empire, which annexed the area into its Arabia Petraea province in 106 CE, further integrating Al-'Ula into the broader cultural and economic exchanges of the Greco-Roman world.
Al-'Ula continued to play a vital role during the early Islamic period. As the Islamic empire expanded, the city became part of the Hejaz region, a crucial area in the early history of Islam. In the 7th century, the oasis flourished again as a commercial hub under the Umayyads and Abbasids. Al-Mabiyat, a nearby settlement that thrived from the 7th to the 13th century, emerged as an important trade center. However, the settlement eventually declined, and by the 13th century, Al-'Ula's medieval walled city was built using stones from the ruins of the earlier Dedanite and Lihyanite structures.
The city regained prominence in the early 20th century when the Ottoman Empire constructed the Hejaz Railway, linking Damascus to Medina. Al-'Ula was one of the railway’s major stops, further solidifying its role as a vital link in regional trade routes. The railway station in Al-'Ula is a reminder of the city’s enduring importance as a transportation hub, even in modern history.
Today, Al-'Ula is recognised as one of the richest archaeological regions in Saudi Arabia, with a vast array of inscriptions and petroglyphs scattered throughout its surrounding sandstone cliffs. Mount Ikma and Ar-Ruzeiqiah are two key sites for rock art, featuring carvings that depict hunting scenes, humans, animals, and mysterious symbols. These petroglyphs provide insight into the beliefs and daily lives of the region’s ancient inhabitants.
The surrounding of Al-'Ula, characterised by dramatic canyons, valleys, and rock formations, add to the area’s allure. The contrast between the barren desert and the lush palm-filled oases has made Al-'Ula a focal point for nature lovers and adventure tourists. One of the most iconic natural landmarks is Jabal AlFil (Elephant Rock), a towering rock formation resembling an elephant, which has become a popular attraction for visitors.
In recent decades, Al-'Ula has experienced significant growth and transformation. In the 1980s, the city began to modernise with new agricultural and urban developments, drawing in settlers from across the region, including Bedouins and migrant workers. The Saudi government, through the Royal Commission for Al-'Ula, has set in motion a bold plan to develop the city into a world-class tourism and cultural destination.
In 2018, Saudi Arabia signed a 10-year agreement with France to collaborate on the development of Al-'Ula. This partnership aims to establish luxury hotels, modern infrastructure, and a world-class museum that will celebrate the region’s art and culture. The Royal Commission has also launched an integrated archaeological survey of the Al-'Ula valley and beyond, ensuring that the historical sites are preserved while being opened to the public. Several sites, including Hegra, had been closed for conservation but were reopened in 2020 as part of the region’s grand tourism strategy.
A key focus of the development plan is sustainability and the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the tourism sector. The Royal Commission, in collaboration with AstroLabs, has been running an SME accelerator program aimed at fostering local businesses and enhancing the tourism ecosystem in Al-'Ula. This program aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on oil revenues. Al-'Ula is projected to attract two million tourists annually and contribute SAR 120 billion to the national GDP by 2030.
With the easing of visa processes for international travelers, Al-'Ula has become a must-visit destination for tourists seeking both historical and modern experiences. Visitors are drawn to its rich heritage sites, such as the Oasis Heritage Trail, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah, and the Al-'Ula Old Town. Adventure-seekers explore the surrounding desert through activities such as hiking, rock climbing, stargazing, and dune bashing.
Al-'Ula’s ambitious plans for the future do not detract from its ancient past. Rather, it seeks to elevate and celebrate the city’s long-standing history, turning it into a beacon of cultural exchange and a symbol of Saudi Arabia’s drive towards modernisation.
In blending the ancient with the new, Al-'Ula is set to become a premier global destination, offering a unique blend of history, culture, nature, and adventure. It is a city where the past meets the future, inviting the world to rediscover the wonders of the Arabian Peninsula.

NITDA Director General Advocates For Digital Literacy As The Key To Cybercrime Prevention At EFCC National Cybercrime Summit

At the National Cybercrime Summit hosted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, delivered a ground-breaking presentation titled "Alternative to Cybercrimes." His thought-provoking paper challenged traditional methods of combating cybercrime, offering a forward-looking approach centred around digital literacy and innovation.

Inuwa, widely regarded as a key figure in Nigeria's digital transformation, stressed that the fight against cybercrime should not rely solely on law enforcement. Instead, he highlighted the urgent need for a paradigm shift—one that focuses on educating and empowering citizens to safeguard themselves online. Central to this strategy is NITDA's ambitious target to achieve 95% digital literacy in Nigeria by 2030.

"Combating cybercrime is not just about apprehending offenders; it’s about equipping individuals with the knowledge to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats," Inuwa stated. He emphasized that NITDA's ongoing digital literacy programs are aimed at reducing cyber threats by arming Nigerians with critical online safety skills. The agency is rolling out various initiatives designed to educate citizens and foster innovation in the digital space.

In his remarks, Inuwa lauded the efforts of the EFCC in tackling cybercrime but insisted that prevention should be prioritized alongside enforcement. "If we want to curb cybercrime in the long term, we need to focus on building a society where individuals are aware of the risks and know how to protect themselves," he added.

The NITDA chief's address comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with rising incidents of cyber fraud, hacking, and online scams. Inuwa's emphasis on digital education as a primary defence strategy aligns with global trends that view knowledge and innovation as vital to securing cyberspace.

In a country where internet penetration is rapidly growing, Inuwa's message resonates as a call to action for policymakers, tech companies, and educational institutions to collaborate in building a digitally literate population. As NITDA continues to roll out its digital literacy programs, the agency is poised to play a critical role in transforming Nigeria into a digitally secure and empowered nation by 2030.

The summit attracted cybersecurity experts, law enforcement officials, and stakeholders from across the country, all of whom echoed the need for greater public awareness in the fight against cybercrime.

Kashifu Inuwa's vision, encapsulated in his presentation, is set to redefine the way Nigeria approaches the digital economy, fostering a proactive culture of cyber safety for the future.

Air Peace: US Court Vindicat Allen Onyema Of Wrongdoing

The District Court in Atlanta, Georgia has vindicated Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace of any business fraud and slamed Mayfield $4000 fine.

This is after three years of investigation involving about five agencies of the American government and the subsequent legal fireworks.

The court, which discovered that there was no loss against any bank in the indictment suit filed by the Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, however, ordered a probation and $4000 fine against a former staff of Springfield Aviation Company Inc., Ebony Mayfield last Friday.

A statement by the law firm of Augustine Alegeh & Co., counsel to the Airline, explained that Mayfield was an administrative staff of Springfield with limited knowledge in Letter of Credit Transactions, who pleaded guilty to one count in the indictment, presumably as she realised the futility of attempting to explain several Letters of Credit utilised for purchase of aircraft for Air Peace Limited in a jury trial.

Probation, the firm explained, is the lowest possible sentence available under American Federal Law. The firm noted that there have been false and unsubstantiated stories in Nigeria, about the indictment.

“Our clients never took loans or credit from any American Bank and Mayfield was never paid the sum of $20,000 at any time to commit any fraud, as it is being peddled in some quarters.

There was no loss of money or any damage whatsoever to any third party. The American government admitted in Court that no bank suffered any financial loss in the matter.

According to the firm, the decision confirmed the position of its clients that there was no fraudulent intent in all the Letters of Credit, because there was no victim in any way, manner or form.

Ogbeche Threatens Legal Action Over Alleged Link Between Cross River Governor and NUJ FCT Election Crisis

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) dissolved its executive council (exco) on Saturday, October 19, during a contentious congress held at the NUJ secretariat in Abuja. The exco, led by Patrick Osadebamwe, including its chairman, was impeached by union members who accused the leadership of attempting to manipulate the upcoming council election scheduled for December 4.

Tensions escalated when the exco was alleged to have tried imposing a credentials committee, which would oversee the election. The committee members were reportedly loyal to the exco, raising suspicions among members about the fairness of the process. The committee nominees included Emeka Nze of Blueprint, Francisca Udoh from ITV, and Godfrey Okon from Abuja Inquirer.

A chaotic scene unfolded during the congress as members rejected the proposed committee, accusing the leadership of deceit. Chanting "We no go gree" and "You can’t dictate to us," union members clashed with the exco, almost resorting to physical confrontation. Armed police were briefly called but left upon realizing it was a union dispute.

In response to the unrest, members gathered signatures, with over two-thirds supporting the impeachment of the exco. They urged chapel chairmen to temporarily manage the FCT council’s affairs and called on the NUJ national leadership to approve the decision and appoint a caretaker committee.

Ogbeche Reacts, Denies Governor's Involvement

Emmanuel Ogbeche, the former NUJ FCT council chairman and current spokesperson for Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, expressed disbelief over claims linking the governor to the NUJ FCT election crisis. Speaking with The ICIR, Ogbeche dismissed the allegations as unfounded, questioning why a governor would interfere in a local NUJ election.

Ogbeche, who served as the FCT council chairman for five years before becoming Governor Otu’s spokesperson in June 2023, denied any involvement in the election or the credentials committee controversy. He vowed to take legal action against media outlets that reported on the alleged involvement without seeking his response.

"There is NUJ in Cross River State. He has not interfered in the NUJ in Cross River. Why should he interfere in FCT? He is just one out of 36 governors," Ogbeche said, stressing that his principal had no stake in the FCT election.

He revealed that his lawyers were preparing legal notices for media organizations, demanding proof of the alleged link between Governor Otu and the NUJ election. Ogbeche emphasized that any suggestion of interference would have serious consequences, adding that the NUJ’s internal crises were not limited to the FCT but extended to the national level as well.

Reflecting on his time as chairman, Ogbeche defended his record, stating that there were no crises under his leadership. He expressed disappointment that internal mechanisms within the union's constitution were not utilized to resolve the issues, warning that the integrity of Nigeria’s premier journalism union was at stake in the current situation.

Nairaland GeneralNUJ FCT Council Members Impeach Patrick Osadebamwe Led-exco by okrote4real(op):
...Accuse Chairman of high-handedness during nomination of Credential Committee

...Rebuffed Policemen invited by embattled Chairman

Hundreds of Members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council on Saturday, impeached the Council Chairman, Patrick Osadebamwe and his Executive Council (EXCO).

The aggrieved Journalists drawn from various Chapels across the nation's capital city unanimously resolved to sign impeachment notice during the heated Congress held at Council's Secretariat located in Utako District of Abuja.

Prior to the nomination exercise, one of the Senior Journalists had drawn the attention of the embattled Chairman to the exclusion of the Nomination Committee on the agenda drawn in the minute of the last Congress.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzMslTcVg8w?si=s7vMmVZwHxhFCb7o
In his response however, Comrade Osadebamwe admitted that the decision was deliberate with a view to ascertain the importance of the forthcoming elections.

Meanwhile, trouble started when Comrade Osadebamwe-led EXCO called a set of members allegedly from the camp of his ally to nominate members of the Credentials Committee for the upcoming Council's Election on the 4th December, 2024.

However, overwhelming members in attendance protested against the lopsidedness in the choice of the nominees which allegedly known to be his loyalists.

Piqued by the unethical and unprofessional actions and inactions of the Patrick Osadebamwe-led Exco, some of the members advised that the believed to be loyal to him and his EXCO to nominate members of the credentials committee, which many suspected was staged managed.

All pleas and protests by the Congress, rejecting the nominations, fell on deaf ears just as their insistence to subjects those nominated to voting was rejected by the EXCO.

According to members, they alleged the impeached EXCO had met with select members on the directives of the former chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche who is an Aide to Governor Bassey Otu of Cross Rivers State to pre-select the credentials committees.

Some Congress members further insisted that the embattled ex-chairman, his EXCO, and their loyalists met at the Okoisisi Garden, Utako, and planned the grand imposition, which met stiff resistance.

According to some members of the union, they alleged Ogbeche has a candidate for the election and instructed his successor and erstwhile subordinate, Osadebamwe, to put in place all modalities for his "anointed" candidate to win by all means.

The former FCT Council Chairman, Ogbeche, had boasted that his principal, Governor Otu, was interested in the election and directed to support a particular candidate.

The refusal of Osadebamwe-led EXCO to yield to demand of the Congress led to a commotion in the hall with the chanting "We no go gree o, we no go gree', 'we move for impeachment you can't dictate to us!" while there were smashing of chairs and almost exchange of blows.

Those nominated were Emeka Nze, Blueprint, Francisca Udoh ITV, and Godfrey Okon of Abuja Inquirer.

Consequently, the erstwhile chairman and his EXCO whom most members described as 'unpopular' called armed police personnel to chase out the protesting members, but upon arrival, members chanted 'No Police! No Police!' and the charged atmosphere made the operatives to leave the venue of the Congress.

While the drama ensued, signatures were collected with more than 178 out of 255 two-thirds of the Congress signing for the impeachment of the
Osadebamwe-led EXCO.

Some members leading the impeachment process called on NUJ National Leadership to ensure the ratification of the sack of the FCT Council EXCO and appoint a caretaker committee.

Meanwhile, Chapel Chairmen after normalcy returned, resolved to take over the affairs of the FCT Council pending when the National Secretariat of the Union will set up a Caretaker Committee.

Nairaland GeneralNUJ FCT Council Elections: MAD Initiative Calls For Fair And Transparent Process by okrote4real(op): 12:43pm On Oct 18, 2024
As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council prepares to inaugurate a Credentials Committee on Saturday, 19th October 2024, to oversee its leadership elections, the Make A Difference Initiative (MAD) has called for a level playing field to ensure a peaceful transition.

The advocacy group, known for promoting justice and equity, urged Abuja journalists to set an example for the political class by conducting elections free from manipulation, rancour, or crisis.

According to the group, this objective can only be achieved through leadership committed to the collective good of the union, protecting members' interests, and resisting undue influence from self-serving individuals or groups.

In a statement signed by the Executive Director of MAD Initiative, Dr. Lemmy Ughegbe, the group placed the responsibility of ensuring a fair electoral process on the incumbent chairman, Patrick Osaretin Osadebamwen, and his executive team.

The statement urged them to create a conducive environment that allows all aspirants and voting members to participate freely and without intimidation.

"It is our hope that Osadebamwen will seize this opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by managing the process with transparency, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the union’s values", the statement read.

MAD Initiative also called on the NUJ National President, Comrade Christopher Ikechukwu Isiguzo, to closely monitor the process and offer timely guidance to the FCT Council leadership if necessary.

The group concluded by expressing its hope for a smooth, peaceful transition that reflects the true will of the union’s members.

The NUJ FCT Council election is seen as an important opportunity for journalists in the nation's capital to demonstrate that credible elections are possible, even in challenging environments.

Car TalkWhy CNG Vehicles Pose A Grave Risk On Nigerian Roads by okrote4real(op):
BY ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM

The recent explosion in Edo State involving a CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) powered vehicle has reignited fears among Nigerians regarding the safety of such vehicles on our roads. It is no longer a matter of speculation; the dangers posed by CNG vehicles in Nigeria, particularly in the context of our unique environment, are glaring.

CNG has been hailed globally as a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional fossil fuels. However, what works in other countries doesn’t always translate to safety or practicality here in Nigeria. While smaller nations with milder climates may not experience the same level of risk, Nigeria's hot, tropical climate presents specific challenges that should not be ignored. The heat and poor road conditions, combined with a lack of stringent safety checks, amplify the risk of CNG explosions.

The incident in Edo is not an isolated one. There have been similar accidents, each with deadly consequences. The root cause can often be traced back to poor maintenance, inadequate safety regulations, and a lack of infrastructure to support CNG vehicles. While the government pushes for alternatives to petrol in light of the rising cost of fuel, it is doing so without considering the full implications for safety.

Inadequate training for mechanics, the scarcity of proper CNG refueling stations, and the general neglect of safety protocols create a perfect storm for disaster. We should ask ourselves: is it worth risking lives for the sake of reducing emissions or cutting fuel costs?

https://youtube.com/shorts/Qh8yp4ZoK5c?si=0pYahxcsyRrYnQFQ
Additionally, many of the vehicles converted to CNG are not originally designed for this purpose. These conversions, often carried out in substandard workshops, leave the vehicles vulnerable to leaks and other malfunctions that can lead to explosions. Unlike developed nations, where regular inspections are mandatory, Nigeria’s lax enforcement of safety regulations makes these vehicles ticking time bombs.

The government’s attempt to push CNG as a solution to the current fuel crisis should not come at the expense of public safety. Until there is a comprehensive plan that includes proper safety measures, adequate infrastructure, and regular inspections, CNG-powered vehicles should not be in circulation on Nigerian roads.

We must prioritize the safety of our citizens over short-term economic gains. The explosion in Edo is a tragic reminder of what can happen when safety is sidelined. It's time to take a step back, re-evaluate, and ensure that we do not sacrifice lives in the name of progress.
