The topic of this thread interests me a lot. But I would prefer that those posting should emphasize how they overcame the natural start out fear, inertia and the despair that comes with the first few years of realising that the actual results are far from expectations. It would also be nice to hear how they kept their eyes on the goal despite all odds. 4 Likes |

ikmontana: I am really impressed by your doggedness and how committed you are to getting things done properly despite how bleak the future may appear. I encourage you because I am usually endeared to people who decide to take the creation of their future into their hands by starting out somewhere with whatever they have. There is a young chap I met somewhere at Afariogun Street in Ikeja. This guy is doing well seriously. He started out with a chemist store after NYSC. Now the store is the go to cornerstone in that neighbourhood. He sells other stuff heavily as well as attending to people who seek above the counter drugs. I know another male dominated family in Opebi Village where all the boys are graduates and are working in the family convenience store business. All four of them. Educated guys too. I was shocked when I met one of them at the airport during one of my foreign trips. He was going to Germany for a few weeks to buy used wares for sale. Now the last born is in the USA studying pharmacology. They have three mom & pop shops in that neighbourhood which is incidentally very densely populated. And they are the preferred retailer shops in that place even with the proliferation of other shops. Aha! They also own a very thriving bar in that place. The place is always thronged every evening. If you have any doubts just visit the neighbourhood (via Salvation Road, Opebi). 1 Like |

Ochason: So sorry, I may not have the time to lead you there and secondly my knowledge may also be inadequate. All I can tell you is that it's like selling cocaine. It's very fast moving and the demand is just crazy. Why not read up about the egg business here; https://www.nairaland.com/2516851/experience-egg-distribution-investment 2 Likes |

ikmontana: This is vintage. I am really impressed at how well you focused on the big picture. The biggest problem of many would be entrepreneurs is their consistent analysis of profitability. While it is important to weigh your options I can assure you that when it comes to FMCG products there is no losing long term. If the poster above had decided that the profit was too marginal he would never have embarked on the mission. You can imagine he started out with zero profit per pack of drinks. But within one month he turned over the money 4 times and if you observe closely you would also notice the profit per unit increasing gradually. Whenever I see a particular business proliferating I always make inquiries and recently, the soft drinks/bottled water sub-sector has exploded phenomenally. The profit margins may be low but the demand is tremendous. For some reason meeting demand has been impossible. I understand that some retailers do as much as 5000 packs per month. Now even if the profit is just 50.00, multiply it by the volume and voila you would arrive at the gross profit. I think it's a very worthwhile venture. Congratulations bro for taking the first step. It's usually the most difficult of them all. 4 Likes |

Paxxcarl: My post may be a bit long but I hope you learn something from it ....no matter how small. I think your expectations are a bit too steep for someone who wants to embark on a totally fresh path. You talking 10% monthly reward here. While this isn't impossible it most definitely will be a rare feat. If on the other hand you are investing in the expansion of an already existing business that is making some form of profit then 10% or even more is very practicable. My suggestion is that you should use like 500k of that money and create a trading business with particular emphasis on something that sells everyday. Trust me several products abound. Most of these products can give you 10% profit per sale and you can turnaround your capital several tines per week. Right here on Nairaland there are several accounts of businesses that are doing very well. Most of these businesses are not the type that the typical Nigerian graduate will be proud of....and yet they are money spinners. Some years ago, I employed an ex-banker in my company and only did this for sentimental reasons. He was a poor fit from day one. So I told him that I will allow him six months after which I will terminate. I then advised that he seek out what he intends to do when he leaves me. The man came up with very utopian and impracticable ideas. I just kept telling him to keep it simple. I nudged him in the direction of eggs distribution and he kept resisting his reason being that it is degrading. I even introduced him to Nairaland where a thread by one Blacky provided a detailed guide on eggs distribution. To cut the long story short, he was swept off high horse last year and he embarked on eggs sales in December 2019. It's amazing that in just one year he is doing very well with a weekly turnover of 1.5 Million with his net profit being about 5% of that amount. What more could be ask for? I am not advising you to go into eggs sir. I am however suggesting that you look at different FMCG options and choose one that people must buy everyday. Modify how it is being done by the majority and then begin to smile daily to the bank. There is one I keep looking at everyday and I am just wondering how I can approach it. It's a simple model, fast moving product, 10% daily profit, minimal risk potential and very importantly it has a very affordable start out requirement. To crown it all I am reading a particular thread about it here on Nairaland and the OP is the best. 16 Likes 2 Shares |

saintruky: There are always three sides to a story. In this case; 1. Your friend's wide of the story 2. The management's side 3. The truth as it actually happened. I do not believe (and I believe that I am entitled to my opinion which is predicated on my experience spanning several years) that a serious management will deduct monies from productive staff in an arbitral manner. It will be very counter productive in the long run. Hiring new staff puts a serious strain on resources and it is no easy task. Even if there are several candidates in the pool waiting to join the system there is training and adaptation to deal with before reasonable results will begin to show. 2 Likes |

Jeezuzpick: Your sense of humour is quite unrivalled. However, you will admit that these rules have been drawn up based on experience. There is nothing draconian about those rules. Just everyday expectations on a typical corporate setting. I think the part about the M.D repeating herself was not properly crafted. The intention is not essentially captured in the sentence which could be a use of English flaw. The point many didn't note is that they offer a basic salary of 100k monthly which could be interpreted to be a job with some responsibility. True, they may sound harsh but you have been told about the conditions upfront and in black/white too....so you do clearly have a choice in the matter. 2 Likes |

DAramis: This is the most balanced response to this situation. A few things stand out clearly here; The headmaster wasn't very formal in engaging the OP for whatever reason. OP was excited, desperate or overwhelmed and this buckled under continuous postponement of the discussions that would settle his reward. The school is very small and their cashflow is rather poor. 100 students with perhaps 20 being paying students. This is most likely the situation. Most times it is better to have the complete facts before jumping to conclude based only on a one sided perspective. |

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Lady Loses Job To 'Who Gave You My Number?' Question On WhatsApp by Oktane: 1:28pm On Nov 28, 2020 |
Jashub: There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way the interview was conducted. His Salutations should have calmed her down; 'Hello Mary'. He greeted her with her first name. What more was she expecting? The least she could have done is to be a little patient. But no need to argue about this. The message has been passed. Even Mary would have learnt her lessons judging from the way she begged later on as if her life was dependent on that job. Important question for you Sir; With benefit of hindsight, do you think she will repeat this behaviour consciously in a subsequent experience? That is the best answer to the question regarding if she was wrong or not. I rest my case. |
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Lady Loses Job To 'Who Gave You My Number?' Question On WhatsApp by Oktane: 12:46pm On Nov 28, 2020 |
Jashub: I have read all your responses to this post. You are obviously not very familiar with contemporary HR processes especially as it regards recruiting a fresh member into your organisation. There is no standard for a first time discourse with a potential employee. This was a very befitting approach as it took the lady unawares and exposed her underbelly. She is rude, uncouth arrogant and has a very limited scope. Perhaps this will be a good lesson to everyone; Never ever be in a hurry to ask the person on the line who he/she is. In the course of the conversation this will be naturally revealed. I have had the privilege of being on a Phone Interview panel trying to recruit fresh graduates during the pandemic. My experiences in this case will fill a book. Most candidates only become courteous (albeit pretentiously) when they suspect we are calling in respect of their career future. Many Nigerians have no sense of courtesy. Be calm in responding to calls. If the person has your number and make the effort to call then he will make his intention known at some point of the conversation. 3 Likes |
