Business / Re: WHICH PRODUCT HAS THE GREATEST DEMAND IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD DURING THIS LOCKDOWN by Oktane: 9:05pm On Apr 01, 2020
Very interesting question.

I went out yesterday to several pharmacies and chemist stores that were open in my hood.

I was searching for face masks. 11 outlets visited and not one of them had the sudedenly elusive face mask. Also no surgical gloves available.

Walking back, it struck me that this must be the general case in Lagos and maybe other towns within Nigeria.

On a small scale if one had a stock of 10 Million worth of face masks, one could sell it off now without any issue.

On a larger scale, if one could source a very large consignment of facemasks, the Task force on Vivid 19 might be easily persuaded to buy. Or better still get the documentation and invite the several Billionaires in the country to fall over themselve and pay for it in return for good press.

Locally, some smart tailor could make these masks and sell them like I have seen some locally made Sanitisers in different shapes and sizes.

Thanks OP, this topic is ingenious.

Hello guys!

I hope you are enjoying this period.

For some of us we are even working harder than when there is a regular hustle and bustle.

An argument ensued last week among my business associates and it revolved around which product that would be in highest demand during this period.

Many positions were advanced and defended which I will share here.

Lets make it interactive, share your personal demand experience and the demand profile in your neighbourhood.
This can be achieved by simply questioning the shopkeepers in your residential vicinity.

This is the stuff of research and the results of the little effort can help you immeasurably. Details later.

So sorry, I can't be of help there.

I could have been of help in Lagos.

My advice is however that you should seek out a merchandising or sales job in Kaduna metropolis.

That is always a sure odd to bet on.

Wishing you the very best.

Stay there and be drinking Panadol for a companies headache. As if you lot will return it should you have it. Holier than thou.

If the seller had put that chiller for 70k or less one of you would have purchased it immediately without minding if its companies property.

You all are just pissed that she put it for 150k something she got for free hence she shouldnt make that much out of it.

I have tried very much to ignore your posts on this matter but I feel constrained to make an input especially considering your moniker.....which unfortunately is at variance with your posturing on this matter (which by extension reflects your integrity quotient).

Your arguement reeks of greed and a total disregard for corporate (and perhaps personal) agreements and best practice.

You are just lucky that you are managed by a weak and careless Representative. That you can even put finger to screen to type those words which at best reflect a total lack integrity and a banality which words cannot describe.

You requested for a chiller as a sales tool from a benevolent company and took delivery after agreeing to and consequently signing the terms and conditions. You used the tool and made sufficient profit and all you could do is to sell off another entity's property as if it is yours and even at that claiming that it is an entitlement and furthermore making noise about it.

You are without honour Madam and you should opt to change your moniker to 'lowered hands' as that would be more appropriate in describing your actions, words and thoughts.

If you did economics then you'll understand the concept of underpopulation.

I actually did and there are varying school of thoughts on demographics.

I subscribe to the school of thought that all population types have advantages that can be tapped.

Always, the seasoned economist models his economic development after the existing demographic characteristics.

We are a growing population with more of the population in the productive bracket. Can we not take advantage of that?

Many large populations that should otherwise be consumptive are now productive using their population as the base market before exporting.

USA, China, India etc. Need I name more?

Large populations = Large markets

In Lagos, there are over 1000 roads. Out of that figure, can you boast that up to 2% of the roads are in good condition, devoid of potholes and dirty drainage?
We cannot be boasting with just 2% of good roads, especially when a city like Dubai has almost 95% good roads. Or don’t you believe that you deserve better?

When Fashola said that there are no bad roads in Nigeria, everyone came hard at him.

Now because our bad roads are being compared with Dubai, everyone is faulting the OP. Sincerely, this type of patriotism will get us nowhere.

My point exactly. Let us learn to distinguish between patriotism and reality

can you say the same for majority of nigerians....??

The blame is squarely at the feet of the discos.
The people (read masses) still view electricity as an entitlement. And that's because they are still billed on estimation.

The set-up is privatised for Goodness sakes. A paradigm shift is required to ensure whY is used is paid for.

Can you even imagine Siemens or General electric investing in Electricity and then you have majority of people 'stealing' electricity. Something is awfully wrong and I decide you to consider this objectively before pelting stones I the wrong direction.

He is also entitled to his opinion because you have no idea of what experience he has been through in this country.

Bros come out from under the rock.
Bill paying will not be attained 100% until you run the sold entities like the profit making companies that they are supposed to be.

Right now they are temporary hustle appendages for those previously in government and I daresay some currently in government.

Why not install prepaid meters and attract 100% bills payment ......UFRONT.

Or is there something that the distribution companies know that we don't? smiley

Government will never have enough money Bros. Just like you the individual will never have enough. It's for this reason money is called a scarce resource.

What intelligent people do is to use what they have judiciously.

About the tax thing, it can't work and the government knows this. Getting everybody in the tax loop requires more than policy making and implementation.

You need to display transparency, attract the loyalty and trust of the followers by ensuring that more of the current inflows are used for their own good. Tax paying is an anathema.

If you live in Otta and work in Lagos Island you will have a fair idea of why taxes will ALWAYS be evaded by the majority.

Nigerians don't like Nigeria the way Emirates like and promote UAE.

U pick roads from the city/financial centre of Dubai and then pick village roads in Nigeria and start to compare.

Have u been to Sharjah? Ajman or other rural Emirates in UAE?

Try promote ur country small, hate ll get u nowhere.

Sharjah Sir is not in Dubai. It is a separate emirate and I am sure you know that.

But then again you cannot compare your best state capital to Sharjah in terms of infrastructure, organisation and cleanliness.

Let's call this thing by its name. We should consider this more of a wake-up call rather than view it with total disdain. This is not unpatriotic. It is a wake-up call. We indeed can do better than this. Evidences abound.
Travel / Re: Roads In Dubai Vs Roads In Nigeria (Photos) by Oktane: 10:25pm On Dec 09, 2019
I do not think we should allow the import of the skewed comparison be lost on us.

Autojosh is trying to convey a message and you should make the effort to understand him aright.

For the avoidance of doubt those are not the best roads in Dubai. There re better roads like the ones that link other emirates like Sharjah and Doha but to mention a few.

Truth be told; we do have a a few good roads but when put side by side with Dubai it amounts to zilch. We really do not have roads. There is absolutely no road in the entire Dubai that can be as bad as some of the roads you have in Nigeria.

If anything takes you into Agbara, Lusada, Akute/Ajuwon,Mowe/Ibafo and also Otta/Ijoko you will understand how Autojosh must have felt.

If you travel from Calabar to Uyo (it used to be a 1hr trip in the 70s and 80s) and spend 24 hours in one spot you will understand how derelict our infrastructure is.

Let me shock some of us. When the Zimbabwean dollar was at its lowest ebb, their infrastructure (especially in Harare) was still comparable to some Eastern European countries. The policy then was to have potholes repaired 24 hours after it was reported.

Treated potable water was also as consistent as developed climes. If you lacked water due to some fault it was meant to be restored within 6 hours of a telephone complaint.

The earlier we admit that we have failed as a country the better for us. The structure must be re-examined and perhaps reorganised such that comparative advantage will be emphasized and the competitive edge of each component unit will be harnessed for the development of that region. Pretending that all is well is only tantamount to hiding our heads in the sand like an ostrich.

Dubai is a developmental phenomenon currently model that is being studied even by the developed dispensations.

Of course they have their fair share of challenges that rapid development usually presents there but most times it has already been projected for and it is nipped in the bud or at least mitigated. It is a well planned society to the very minute details.

All its successes can only be attributed to just one indisputable fact;

A long term selfless and visionary leadership that projects far into the future.

Unfortunately, we are yet to have that kind of leadership which attracts a loyal followership anchored on the personal magnetism of the leader who has evidenced himself as trully great Visionary committed to change our fortunes and reposition us in a position of pride among the committee of nations.

FORTUNATELY, all hope is not lost as cases of good governance abound at least at the state level in all the 6 geopolitical regions of the country. Our problem is then not the lack of visionary leadership but how to get them into power.

You are right. Staffing is not by force, but can be enforced via laws. Also you fail to state that casual workers should earn more than staff.

They don't have to earn more than staff. In many cases some companies make it worth their while by paying more because they reason that the tenor is short and it also comes without the benefits permanent staff enjoy.

BUT THERE IS NO LAW/RULE that their pay must be higher.

Staffing cannot be enforced by laws....unless there was a prior agreement that has been trounced by the employing party.
