Purchase of Laptops(FCIS Students) The Vice-Chancellor has directed that it is mandatory for all students of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences to have laptops. Students must inscribe their names and matriculation numbers on the laptops. Students who do not meet this requirement would not be allowed to register in the next session. FORMER heavyweight champion, Samuel Peter, has continued to hit the pads hard with trainer Abel Sanchez at The Summitt Training Center in Big Bear Lake, California, as he prepares for the title shot. Peter (34-3,27 KOs) would once again challenge the IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion, Wladimir Klitschko (54-3, 48 KOs) in a highly anticipated rematch on September 11 at the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. In their first fight, Peter knocked down Klitschko three times, but lost a unanimous decision. "This time when I catch him, he's going to stay on the deck!" promised Peter. http://www.compassnewspaper.com/NG/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66476:peter-vows-to-catch-klitschko-in-tight-corner&catid=133:other-sports&Itemid=672

FOUR years after surviving a fuel fire in Surulere, Lagos, a 45-year-old suspected drug trafficker has died of cocaine ingestion. Hakeem Adesegun, a trader, who was said to have survived fire on October 3, 2006, allegedly ingested the cocaine, preparatory to his trip to Europe. He reportedly died in the hospital when one of the wraps ruptured in his stomach. This was confirmed after a post-mortem witnessed by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was carried out on him in Lagos. Sources said a burst wrap, among other wraps, was discovered in his stomach and after it was tested, it proved positive to cocaine. Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, described the incident as sad, saying: “I sympathise with the family of the deceased”. Giade also urged youths to have the fear of God and consider the consequences of their action. “If they have no respect for themselves, they should, at least, consider their loved ones and their creator,” the NDLEA boss charged. The late suspect is survived by two wives and eight children. It was gathered that Adesegun had ingested several wraps of the drug, but because of the complications on him, his sponsors kept him to excrete them. When the last wrap was stuck in his stomach, they were said to have reluctantly asked him to go back home. A member of the family who preferred anonymity said that the deceased kept everybody in the dark about the incident. “Hakeem left home without telling either of his two wives where he was going. Three days later, he returned looking very sick. He did not even say what the problem was until he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. We did not know he had taken drugs,” said a relative. Giade, however, called on members of the public to report suspected drug cases to the agency for prompt intervention, directing narcotic investigators to unmask “the callous and materialistic sponsors” of the late Adesegun to face the full wrath of the law. According to Giade, “drug barons are not bothered over the death of a courier. They will try to retrieve their drugs and recruit another person to smuggle it. We all have a duty to identify these societal enemies and bring them to book”. The agency had also instructed the hospital authority to release the corpse to the family members for burial. Before the late Adesegun, some suspected traffickers had, in the past few years, died of drug ingestion. A suspected woman drug trafficker, Ifeoma Daniel, 29, slumped and died at the departure hall of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, on December 15, 2007 as a wrap of cocaine she allegedly ingested burst in her stomach. She was to board an Ethiopian airline flight to Dubai when she met her untimely death. The late Ifeoma had allegedly ingested 79 wraps of narcotic drug that tested positive to cocaine. The cocaine weighing 1.325kg was evacuated from her bowels through post-mortem. Her last known address was Ohafia Road, Ikorodu, Lagos. Similarly, a drug suspect arrested by NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, Agidi Agwu Agbai, 44, also died on May 24, 2008 due to complications arising from drug ingestion. The late suspect was arrested about a week earlier during the screening of passengers for unlawful possession of narcotics on a KLM flight to Amsterdam. He was placed under observation and allegedly excreted 69 wraps of substances that tested positive to cocaine weighing 1.213kg. Agidi, however, died when one wrap allegedly ruptured in his stomach. He hailed from Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State. http://www.compassnewspaper.com/NG/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66429:father-of-eight-dies-of-alleged-cocaine-ingestion-&catid=43:news&Itemid=799 |
The name, Moses Taiwo Olalekan, may not ring a bell to many people, but for the anti-graft agencies, especially the Special Fraud Unit(SFU), in Ikoyi, Lagos, this name remains a household name, especially when issues of conspiracy, forgery, obtaining money under false pretence and stealing are concerned. Olalekan has become one of the regular guests at SFU. Indeed, detectives have started wondering how fast he used to quickly leave prisons and go back to his old ways. Call him Olalekan, Gbenga Olowoyo or Barrister Olatunji when it comes to illegal businesses, you may not be wrong. At different occasions, Olalekan had had to change his name just to dupe unsuspecting victims, by claiming to be a legal property agent. He was however unfortunate, when detectives from SFU nabbed him for a similar crime. He was said to have duped one of his victims the sum of N15 million under the guise that he was into buying and selling of landed properties. Olalekan and his partners in crime, had until his arrest, duped various persons of millions of naira while issuing fake Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to his victims. Sometimes in January, 2009, in one of the cases where Olalekan was known as Barrister Olatunji, he and his co-conspirators, now at large, duped their victim the sum of N20 million for the sale of a property at Magodo GRA, Lagos. The victim was said to have paid the suspect and his gang the money in Ibadan, a place later discovered to be their hideout. When arrested, he confirmed the allegations, but denied being the leader of the syndicate. He claimed that it was one Barrister Olaitan Olatunde and his principal, one Otunba Babayemi, also known as Amofin Agba that committed the offences, claiming that he was only given N100.000 . He further revealed that they normally get the photocopies of the Cof O they used to perpetuate their crimes from one Idowu Salami, a former staff of Alausa Land Registry. In another case where he was apprehended by the anti-graft agency, he and his co-conspirators, one Victor Bassey and Stella Ogbonna, who had earlier confessed to the crime, were alleged to have forged a Cof O of a property in Lekki, an international passport and NEPA Bills of the owner of the property and defrauded their victim of the sum of N25 million. Investigations revealed that the suspect was also known as Gbenga Olowoyo a.k.a Oloye. He was reported to be at large at a point in time with one of his partners, Idowu Adelaja Salami. Further investigations revealed that he was the leader of a syndicate where six suspects including one female were arrested and paraded by the Commissioner of Police (CP) SFU, Mr. Saba Ndagi, for obtaining the sum of N41 million, two unregistered Mark Truck and a Toyota Camry. The suspects were later arraigned. Olalekan and his cohorts were earlier on April 29, 2010, arrested for trying to defraud their victim under pretence of selling landed property at Lekki Phase ‘2’ for the sum of N65 million. The suspects lured their victim to Ibadan, claiming that the purported owner of the property for sale was sick and in need of money. The victim went to Ibadan with the suspects and gave the purported sick owner the sum of N2.2 million and later paid N2.8 million into the account of Olalekan. The victim was however lucky as he discovered that the Cof O was fake at about the time he was billed to pay the balance of the total sum of N60 million. Upon the arrest of Olalekan, he allegedly confessed that he was one of the leaders of the syndicate and refunded the sum of N15 million after which he jumped bail. In a related development, the SFU in its effort to rid the society of white collar crimes, has arrested one Dewale Bodurin for stealing stocks belonging to his former clients. Bodurin was said to be a manager at a Port-Harcourt branch of a now defunct stock broking firm. Trouble began for him, when one of his former clients (names withheld), discovered that his shares to the tune of N1,288,706.23k had to be sold without his authorization. The victim was said to have petitioned the Securities and Exchange Commission which traced the sale to an existing Brokerage House, an effort that prompted his arrest. Investigations revealed that when his firm, Alliance Capital Security Limited went out for business in 2008, he assumed the identity of the stock owner and subsequently transferred their shares to an existing stock-broking firm. He went on to open accounts in banks in the name of the stock holders, opened e-mail addreses and generally assumed the client’s identity. He was said to have sent e-mail instructions to the trading house to sell the shares and the money paid into the ficticious accounts he opened. In the course of the investigation, he was also found to have sold stocks to a tune of N521.121.34k belonging to one Robert Kereni, a former client whose whereabouts is presently unknown. Investigation is still on to trace other former clients whose shares he might have fraudulently sold. Ndagi, seized the opportunity to advice clients of Alliance Capital Securities Limited to cross-check the status of their portfolios with CSCS Ltd. He also urged members of the public to watch out before going into business of buying landed property, whether transacting with the rightful owners or not. According to the police chief, search should be conducted properly before final payment is made. He also urged the public to adequately check the Cof O at the Land Registry for due diligence. He, however, reassured that any member of the Land Registry found to be collaborating with these fraudsters, would be apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law. Ogun State Government yesterday expressed its readiness to engage members of the House of Assembly in “reasoned debate” on the desirability of the N100 billion bond being sought in the state. The development came barely 48 hours after the lawmakers listed a televised public debate as the condition to be met for the House to approve the financial lifeline. A statement issued in Abeokuta, the state capital, by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Sina Kawonise, said the decision of government to engage the House in the debate “is to demonstrate its good faith and responsiveness to work in the interest of the people.” Kawonise, who noted that the government had already provided all relevant information on the bond to the House, decried the lawmakers’ consistent decisions to boycott previous fora and stakeholders’ meeting on the matter. He, however, urged the lawmakers to get in touch with the Ministry of Information and Orientation “so that the modality and timing for the debate, which is expected to take place within two weeks, can be worked out.” He said: “The Ogun State Government is willing and ready to engage in reasoned debate, discourse and discussion on the desirability of the bond initiative with all sectors and stakeholders of the society, including the State House of Assembly. “However, the government reiterates that it has given all relevant information on the bond to the House. The government also organised different fora and stakeholders’ meetings, which the leadership of the House declined to attend, in spite of the extension of invitation to it. “It is also important to state that some non-governmental organisations, including the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Catholic Church also organised a public forum on the bond issue. While relevant officials of the government attended the forum to present its case, the leadership of the House was conspicuously absent. “The decision of the government to engage the House in a public debate on the bond in spite of the fact that it had created many avenues which were spurned in the past, is to demonstrate its good faith and responsiveness at all times and to show its readiness to continue to work in the interest of the people of Ogun State.” http://www.compassnewspaper.com/NG/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66398:bond-ogun-ready-for-public-debate-with-assembly-&catid=672:top-stories&Itemid=794 |

Sahara Reporters version of the story Dead Mistress: Orji Kalu Plans Swift Exit From The US Orji Kalu, the former Governor of Abia State in whose United States home a Nigerian widow died last Thursday, is anxious to put distance between him and the tragedy. He will heave a sign of relief and head for the airport as soon as Montgomery County police officers certify that his mistress, Chinwe Masi, died of natural causes. Chinwe, whom he met at a Saks Fifth Avenue while buying wristwatches, died in his Potomac, Maryland, mansion. Montgomery county police detectives said a toxicology test did not reveal any foul play in the death of the widow, who reportedly had a long history of hypertension. She reportedly died after drinking some Guinness Stout at the mansion on that fateful day. Police say they have obtained a statement from Mr. Kalu and also conducted necessary searches of his mansion to determine if he possesed anything that could have contributed to Chinwe's death. Soon after depositing Chinwe's body at Baltimore morgue, Kalu traveled discreetly to Charlottesville, North Carolina, to meet with his long-abandoned wife' His mother, Eunice, who is known to have been involved in Kalu's corrupt activities as governor, is also reported to be receiving treatment (in the North Carolina area) for age-related ailments. Kalu is expected to leave the US tomorrow, Thursday, heading for London if the Montgomery County police give him the magic word by that time.

Tiger Woods woke up a single man on Tuesday, one day after finalizing his divorce from wife Elin Nordegren, but at least one of his former mistresses is reportedly ready to change his bachelor status. Woods‘ divorce caps nine months of embarrassing details about his sex life and poor performances on the golf course. Most of the details of the divorce were kept private, including custody of their children and any financial agreements. But court documents obtained by ABC News show that Nordegren hired eight attorneys from three cities and London while Woods employed just one. Nordegren has also formally returned to using her maiden name. While Nordegren plunges into a new life as a single mother, Woods‘ sordid past keeps haunting him One of his reported former mistresses, Rachel Uchitel, is prepared to ”give up everything” to get Woods back, one of her close friends told TMZ.com. Uchitel reportedly told the friend after news of the divorce broke, TMZ reported, ” ”I feel horrible for him. “He loved her. But he was in love with me. I hope he remembers that was real, and reaches out to me.” The continuing drama in his personal life seems to be affecting Woods on the green. The day he worked out the initial marital settlement agreement in July, Woods played one of his worst rounds of golf ever at the AT&T National Golf Tournament. ABC News sports consultant and USA Today columnist Christine Brennan said even just the absence of support on the course from his family could throw off his game. ”It‘s an iconic image in golf. The golfer with his wife and kids or the female golfer with her husband and kids,” she told ”Good Morning America.” ”And that will not be the case.” But the Woods saga could eventually include an epilogue of redemption, Brennan said, if he‘s able to to get his head back in the game even as a rising young crop of golfers is getting notice. ”It‘s a very valid question,” Brennan said. ”Can Tiger win another major?” http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201008253302228 |
A NEW twist was Tuesday added to the Ogun State bond controversy with House of Assembly Speaker Tunji Egbetokun alleging that he was offered N1 billion bribe to ensure passage of the proposal. Egbetokun claimed that he rejected the offer to safeguard the interest of the state. He alleged: "I have been offered about a N1billion on this bond issue at a single meeting. I am not very rich, but I am comfortable,"he said. The Speaker declined to mention who offered him the bribe. He said for the proposal to scale through, it must be subjected to public debate during which officials of the Finance Ministry will answer questions. Egbetokun also debunked claims that the legislators were being influenced to oppose the bond proposal, saying their stance was based on principles. "We are not being remotely controlled by external forces. The moment they are able to convince us, we will get to the plenary and pass the bond. The easiest way to end this bond issue is through a public debate which should be aired on a state-owned television station," he added. Commissioner for Information Mr. Sina Kawonishe said the government does not subscribe to holding a public debate over the bond issue. The bond, he said was meant for projects. Also rejected by the House of Assembly is the proposed N26billion supplementary budget bought by the government. It said it was rejected because certain funds approved in the 2010 budget are yet to be utilised by some ministries. Egbetokun said the budget was "brought in dead or dead on arrival". http://thenationonlineng.net/web3/news/10933.html |
Zoning has beclouded our thinking in this country. |
Former Green Eagles captain, Segun Odegbami, has dismissed the idea that the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been zoned to the north, as laughable. Odegbami said he is still in the race for the presidency of the federations, and that he will contest in the NFF elections - scheduled to hold on Thursday in Abuja. There were reports in the media early this week that the a caucus of the NFF Congress, which met at the weekend in Abuja had zoned the presidency to the north effectively ending the ambition of Odegbami and former Nigeria Premier League chairman, Oyuiki Obaseki as well as journalist, Fan Ndubuoke to lead the federation. “How can anyone say the presidency of the NFF has been zoned to the north? Where did they get that from? Is it written down anywhere in the books? Odegbami asked. “I think the whole thing is just a joke and I am certainly not taking it seriously. I am still in the race and will not be distracted by such whimsical matter. I am contesting for the presidency of the NFF because I believe that we need to change the way the game is been administered in this country and it will take more such silly rumours to put me off,” he said. Horse trading While Odegbami continues to insist on running, his kinsman, Bukola Olopade, who is currently the Commissioner for Sports in Ogun State, has shelved his presidential ambition. His spokesman, Hakeem Ojaleye said the decision was taken in the ‘overall interest of Nigerian football’. According to sources in the NFF, Olopade stepped down because he was promised the position of Secretary General should any of the northern candidates win the presidency. Ojaleye said this is far from the truth. “He has not struck any deal with anybody. He is still young and can still lead Nigerian football in future. Any talk of a deal is totally false,” he said. FIFA watching The election, which takes place tomorrow, is still generating controversy with some people calling for to be postponement until after elections are held into the state football association, a move the present NFF leadership headed by Aminu Maigari has continued to resist. World football governing body, FIFA in response to a mail on Tuesday said it was monitoring the situation. “One of FIFA’s duties is to ensure the independence of the Member Associations from external interference and to ensure that the football family in each country can have the best possible conditions to develop the game. That is the reason why we directly monitor the situation in each FIFA member association that they comply with their statutes. As such FIFA will also be present as an observer on Thursday when the election in Nigeria will take place to monitor the process and to verify that it is conducted in accordance with the NFF statutes,” said Pekka Odriozola, its acting head of media. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Sport/Football/5610634-146/story.csp |

Indication emerged in Abuja on Tuesday that President Goodluck Jonathan would finally declare his presidential ambition either on September 14 or 15, 2010. A source in the presidency, who disclosed this to one of our correspondents, added that he had directed a committee working on his declaration to choose any of the two days for the event. Media reports had last Wednesday indicated that the President would declare his ambition at the end of Ramadan, which is expected to end on September 12. But the source, who did not want his name in print, said, “He has advised the committee preparing for the event (his presidential declaration) to pick 14 or 15 of September. And we are looking at September 14.” He added that Jonathan had chosen either of the two days because “he did not want his Muslim brothers and sisters” to be distracted with the political activities that would follow his declaration. According to him, the committee was also mandated to bring all supporters of Jonathan and other interest groups along. Many interest groups that include Northern political leaders had urged Jonathan to declare his interest without further delay. The President had earlier on Tuesday evening met with 24 Peoples Democratic Party at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. At the meeting, he was said to have informed the governors of his presidential ambition and sought their support in that regard. One of the governors, who made this known to our correspondent, said that they later had their own meeting at the Kwara State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. According to him, the governors resolved that they would not back former military President Ibrahim Babangida or ex-vice-President Atiku Abubakar. But they also did not agree, the source said, on whether to support Jonathan. A meeting between the Peoples Democratic Party National Chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, and the state chairmen of the party were expected to also hold in Abuja on Tuesday night. It was gathered that the agenda of the meeting was the party’s primaries. Investigations by one of our correspondents on Tuesday, however, revealed that three governors were currently spearheading opposition against the President’s ambition to contest the presidential poll on the platform of the PDP. The governors-Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto); Alhaji Dajuma Goje (Gombe) and Dr. Bukola Saraki- in what looked like a gang up, are believed to be mobilising their colleagues against Jonathan. It was learnt that support for the President among the governors had increased in the last two months because his (Jonathan) efforts to pacify the governors were succeeding. One of the governors, who pleaded anonymity said, ”Most us have been encouraged by his (Jonathan) style of governance. Besides, being one of us, he has a listening ear.” But investigations showed that Saraki, Wamakko and Goje had remained consistent in their opposition to the President. Many of the 36 governors were initially aggrieved that their nominees lost out when Jonathan appointed ministers in March. It was gathered that Goje and Wamakko had not forgiven the President for not picking their nominees. Another top official in the Presidency, who pleaded anonymity, said that the Minister of Transport, Suleiman Yusuf, who is from Sokoto State, had not been nominated by the governor. ”He was nominated by the National Security Adviser Gen. Aliyu Gusau. Wamakko is still aggrieved that Yusuf was appointed as minister.” In Gombe, it was gathered that Goje, apart from nursing a presidential ambition, was not happy that the Minister of Culture, Mohammed Saddiq, who hails from the state, was not nominated by him. “The minister was nominated by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Bayero Nafada, who has been tipped for the governorship poll in 2011,” the Presidency official said. “Goje and Wamakko‘s opposition to the President is also borne out of their stand on the zoning of the President to the North. In fact, they mobilised their colleagues to vote for zoning during Northern governors‘ meeting in Kaduna.” But the Senior Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator. Mohammed Aba-Aji, said that the President already had the endorsement of majority of the PDP governors. Aba-Aji, who spoke with newsmen after the meeting of the Friends of Democracy, a group canvassing for the emergence of Jonathan as the PDP candidate , said Jonathan recognised the governors as party leaders in their respective states and, therefore, was confident that they would support him in his ambition. He said it would be wrong for anyone to think that as a incumbent President, Jonathan was not qualified to aspire for the position in 2011 when it was evident that among all the aspirants, “he was the most qualified.” The presidential aide added that were former President Umaru Yar’Adua to be alive and able to complete his second term, nobody would have said that Jonathan was not suitable to succeed him. Aba-Aji argued that since Jonathan had inherited the “political fortunes” of the late President, there was no way he would not run for the office of the President. He said, “We have made it abundantly clear that Jonathan has inherited all the political fortunes of late President Yar’Adua. Were he to be alive he would have been automatically entitled to a second chance. That chance is the entitlement of President Jonathan. “We are not threatened by the action of the PDP governors. They are very important leaders of our parties in their various states and in the governance of the country. “They know that this is the turn of Jonathan because as a sitting President, it would take thoughtlessness to suggest that somebody other than him should be given the chance. “We have no fear at all we know that our governors will support the President in due course. Many of them are doing that already.” He asked supporters of the President to discountenance the rumours making the rounds that Jonathan might back out of the race. Aba-Aji said, “The President will certainly run and he will declare after Ramadan. He is fasting along with us. But as soon as the Ramadan is over, he will declare for the Presidency. “ We will take a convenient date after the Sallah and you will be duly notified. Don’t believe those who are saying the President won’t run. The President will run.” http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20100825521490 |
WITH the signing into law of the 2010 Electoral Act and the release of the N87.7 billion budget for the next general elections, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, declared yesterday that the 2011 general elections would not be postponed. He said politicians, who wanted to hide under the disguise of non-preparation to call for a shift in the election should start preparing for the polls, if they are serious in getting voters’ support. He said nothing would make the commission succumb to pressure “to shift the date of next year’s election under whatever guise”. Jega, who reiterated his commitment to conduct credible, free and fair elections within the confines of the commission’s rules and the enabling laws, spoke in Kaduna through the commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Legal Services Committee, Mr. Philip Umeadi (jnr) at the Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL) of the ongoing annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). According to Umeadi, the electoral body would not be persuaded by the political class to depart from its original rules and objectives to conduct free, fair and credible elections come 2011. To him, the Jega-led commission would not be swayed by spurious agitation for a shift in the planned electoral time table as the commission would conduct the 2011 general elections within the legal framework made available to it for the exercise. He said: “We will conduct the 2011 polls without fear or favour. We are bound to conduct the election on the basis of legal framework made available to INEC . “And I can tell you without fear of contradiction that INEC will not be persuaded or bound by any agitation from any quarter to depart from the legal framework to conduct the 2011 poll. “I will also like to reiterate the INEC chairman’s commitment to credible poll, as conduct of free and fair poll is the solution to electoral fraud. “ We, in the commission and as a matter of fact, will not depart from the worthy goal, no matter whose ox is gored”. At SPIDEL lecture entitled: “Nigeria 2011- 2015: Setting the electoral agenda” were the Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi ,who was also the speaker of the session, a former Chief Justice of the Federation and chairman of the section, Justice Mohammed Uwais, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Human Rights, Judiciary and Legal Matters, Senator Umaru Dahiru, SIPDEL chairman, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN) and Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN). Obi made a case for credible elections and urged the NBA to lend its weight to the noble objective of sensitising the public on the need for a free and fair poll. He said: “ If every stakeholder plays his role in the electoral processes, then others will follow suit”. Gadzama also said that there was no alternative to credible election. http://www.compassnewspaper.com/NG/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66308:i-wont-postpone-2011-elections-says-jega&catid=43:news&Itemid=799 |
•‘President’ll declare intention after Ramadan’ Ayodele Adegbuyi, Abuja The Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters and the Chairman of one of the groups urging President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the presidency, the Friends of Democracy, Senator Mohammed Abba-Aji, yesterday declared that 19 of the 28 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are supporting the President’s ambition to retain the seat in 2011. He also gave an insight into why Jonathan has not declare his ambition, saying that the President is fasting in solidarity with the Muslim faithful, adding that he will declare as soon as the Ramadan is over. Abba-Aji, who spoke to reporters at the Sheraton Hotel, venue of the meeting of the Friends of Democracy yesterday, said that Jonathan was the closest person to clinch the coveted seat in 2011 because he was already sitting on it. His words: “He is now the closest person to that seat because he is already sitting on it. Nobody is closer to it than Jonathan. He is going to run and there is no doubt about it.” On the threat posed by the PDP governors, who are planning to field their own candidate, he said: “We are not threatened by the action of the PDP governors. They are very important leaders of our party in their various states and in the governance of the country. They know that this is the turn of Jonathan because as a sitting President, it would take thoughtlessness to suggest that somebody other than him should be given the chance. “We have no fear at all. We know that our governors will support the President in due course. Many of them are doing that already. Right now on our count, I am sure that we have majority. Over two third of the Governors are with us and not that the rest are not with us but they are yet to declare but they will declare for the President in due course.” On whether the President would run, Abba-Aji said: “The President will certainly run and he will declare after the Ramadan. He is fasting along with us. This is not something that he has started now, he started it since he moved to Abuja as Vice President. Because of this, he is holding on. But, as soon as the Ramadan is over, he will declare his intention. There is no doubt about that.” http://www.compassnewspaper.com/NG/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66304:19-pdp-governors-support-jonathan-says-abba-aji&catid=43:news&Itemid=799 |
Aigbofa:Please note the "at about 9 p.m." (not exactly 9 p.m.) in the report which could mean 8.48 p.m. At least it was said by a source close to Orji (who may not be in the position to know the exact time she visited the house unless he is a working as a guard at the house) not the journalist. |
