CrimeWoman Helps Police Track Robbery Suspects by oladayo042(op): 2:39pm On Aug 19, 2010
Luck ran out on two armed robbery suspects in Lagos recently when a housewife recognised one of them months after they robbed her family.

The incident happened at Egbeda area of Lagos on April 10 this year. The suspects, Idowu Salihu, 30, and Saheed Onitoro, 23, and other members of their gang robbed the family of money, jewellery, household goods and their Pathfinder SUV. The suspects were arrested on July 12, 2010, when the woman (name withheld), who had gone to the market at Agege to buy some food stuffs, recognised Mr Salihu as one of the armed men who had robbed her family in April. She contacted the Shasha Police Station, and Mr Salihu was promptly arrested. After the case was transferred to the Armed Robbery Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department at Panti, Yaba, David Aremu, a deputy commissioner of police in charge of the unit, acted on a tip-off and led his officers to Ibadan and other parts of the states (Lagos and Oyo), leading to the arrest of other members of the gang. The team also discovered an arms dump in the Honda Accord Car the gang members used for their operation.

Police spokesperson, Frank Mba, said the suspects belong to an armed robbery gang who specialised in stealing exotic cars in the state. “The suspects and other members of their gang had carried out several armed robbery operations in the state before luck ran out on them,” he said. “When the case was transferred to Panti, a discreet investigation was conducted and the officers discovered yet another ingenious method used by these suspects to conceal arms and ammunition in the door mat of the Honda Accord saloon car they use for their operation. It was like having a mobile armoury in an automobile. The police recovered a military assorted rifle, two cut-to-size single barrel locally made pistol, 22 rounds of .6mm live ammunition, and five live cartridges.”

Reasons and regret

One of the suspects, Mr Onitoro, was arrested for car theft last year and was imprisoned at the Maximum Prison at Kirikiri for eight months before he was released in December. “I am the first born of my family and I have six siblings,” he said. “I used to do rewire at Alagbado but money was not coming for me to meet all my family needs. I have a wife and two children and my extended family rely on me for money. When things became tough, I met with my man, called Gbenga, and he was the one that introduced me to this crime. I was imprisoned at the Maximum Prison, at Kirkiri (for car theft) for eight months. It was at Kirikiri I met another armed robbery gang that specialised in stealing exotic cars, so after I was released from the prison December last year, I decided to call the guys I met in prison, because they too were released, so that was how we started robbing again. My job is to help sell the stolen cars to people. The last robbery we went, I got N40,000 as my share. It is my family problem that made me an armed robber.”

Mr Salihu, a father of two from Ogun State, said he went into armed robbery after he was duped of the sum of N1.2 million. “I used to be a very big shoe maker in Ibadan,” he said. “But after I was duped of all my life savings, [to] the sum of N1.2 million, I came to Lagos to start all over. While at a beer parlour at Iju- Ishaga, I met a man called Tunde and he was the one who introduced me to armed robbers; we have carried out three armed robbery operations before I was arrested. I am the one who drives the Honda car that has the weapons. I feel bad about my evil ways.”

Mr Mba said the case is under investigation and called on the public to assist the police with useful information that will help their investigation.

N250,000 for each journalist as a transport fare? IBB knows how to play this game very well.
PoliticsIbb's N10 Million Photo-op With Media Executives by oladayo042(op): 8:21am On Aug 19, 2010
IBB at his Hilltop Mansion Of Corruption With Media executives

In his latest effort to capture the loyalty of the national press and ensure optimal coverage in their pages, former Nigerian dictator Ibrahim Babangida ferried some of the country's top media execs to a lavish press conference under the stars at his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State.

While at it, he praised the professionals for their skill at the craft and invoked his love for the free press. The journalists, overcome perhaps by the kind words, took the bait. No unpleasant questions, like why would he close down newspaper houses and murder a top journalist -Dele Giwa- via a letter bomb? Babangida responded to the question anyway. He told his distinguished guests that his respect for the "sanctity of life" would not have permitted him to kill journalist Giwa. His visitors (mostly editorial board chairs of major media houses in Nigeria) then passed over another opportunity to ask: why would he kill his friend, Mamman Vatsa, over a fake coup plot?

Too good an item to keep this curious meeting under wraps, word soon leaked out that IBB gave these journalists N10 million as "transport fare". Some of these men and women swiftly reached out to SaharaReporters to debunk the part of our story that they got N10 million each, some honestly admitted that they got a paltry gift of N250,000 from the "Evil Genius. Our accountants have told us that going by the number of 40 journalists in attendance, we are still around the same ballpark of N10 million. Plus, IBB handlers said the general doesn't pay his bribes at once, so, he considers that with this partial payment, favorable reporting in the press throughout his already doomed presidential campaign should be considered a "layaway".

Could this be another IBB set-up of the national media chiefs?

PoliticsReuters Story Was Planted - Gej Has Not Decided - Ima Niboro by oladayo042(op): 3:20am On Aug 18, 2010
THERE was anxiety Tuesday over the President’s political future.

A news agency report claimed that Dr Goodluck Jonathan would not run in next year’s election, adding that he would announce his plan not to join the race.

The report set the alarm ringing. Politicians got busy, working the phones to know the veracity of the report, which was on the internet.

The Presidency reacted to the report, saying Dr Jonathan has not made a commitment on whether to contest or not.

The Presidency was reacting to the news giant Reuters’ story that Dr Jonathan may not contest.

A statement by the President’s spokesman, Ima Niboro, said the story was planted.

The statement said: "Our attention has been drawn to a report published by Reuters today (Tuesday), quoting ‘Presidency’ sources as stating that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan may have decided not to run in the 2011 presidential elections after all.

"Information at our disposal indicates that this is a story sponsored by interested parties. Unfortunately, the highly rated global news agency was misled into publishing it."The truth is that the president has not said he will not run. Neither has he said he will. At different times he has given clear reasons why he considers it premature, in the interest of governance, to make any commitment both ways.

"At the appropriate time, the president will inform his country men and women of his future plans. Until then, every comment on the subject remains mere speculation."

The Reuters story entitled: "Nigeria: President may not contest 2011 polls" said the Jonathan was considering not running, but will make his plans known by the end of the month.

The story reads: "Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is considering not standing in elections due next January but will make his intentions known by the end of the month, a presidency source said.

"An election bid by Jonathan, who is from the southern Niger Delta, could split the ruling party due to an agreement that power rotates between the Muslim north and Christian south every two terms, meaning the next president should be a northerner.

"The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has said Jonathan has the right to run, because he was previously vice president on a joint ticket with northern President Umaru Yar’Adua, who died mid-way through his first term earlier this year.

"But the party also said that it would uphold the principle of ‘zoning’ and that other candidates were free to contest at its primaries, expected to be held in September.

"He is not likely going to run, simply because his party has retained the zoning of the presidency to the north for the next four years," the presidency source said, asking not to be named.

"Though his party said he can run despite the zoning, the party said this because they didn’t want to offend him."

The source said Jonathan would make his intentions public before the end of August. Presidency officials declined comment.

"(He) is a man that always ensures equity and fair play, so he may allow the North, to have their remaining four-year term if that will ensure peace and unity," the source said.

"A decision by Jonathan not to run would come as a surprise to many in Africa’s most populous nation. Never before has an incumbent leader, constitutionally allowed to seek re-election, withdrawn from a presidential race.

"It could also lead to protests from his restive Niger Delta homeland, the centre of the mainstay oil and gas industry. Jonathan is Nigeria’s first president from the Ijaw ethnic group, the largest in the vast wetlands region."

PoliticsMy Mango Farm Can Generate N3.5bn Yearly — Nyako by oladayo042(op): 3:13am On Aug 18, 2010
Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako has revealed that the mango section of his Sebore Farms has the capacity to generate N3.5bn annually.

Nyako, who spoke while addressing farmers at the Yola South Farming Skills Acquisition Centre on Sunday, said the 50,000 mango trees in his farm has the capacity to annually produce 10,000 tonnes of mangoes representing 200kg of mango per tree, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

“If you make juice with 10,000 tonnes of mangoes at the present price of juice in the market, you will get about N5bn, while all it would cost you to process the juice won’t be more than N1.5bn.

“That is, I will be taking home N3.5bn annually, all things being equal. This is excluding earnings from my dairy and fish farm,” Nyako said.

The governor said he used his farm as an example to underscore the importance of commercial farming, adding that the establishment of agricultural skill acquisition centres in the 21 local government areas of the state was to reinforce the need for commercial farming.

The centres, he said, were designed to train rural farmers on modern farming techniques.

Due to the adoption of modern farming methods, farmers in other countries usually harvested 180 tonnes of maize on the same farm size where Nigerian farmers realise six tonnes of maize, he added.

“Where your dairy cow gives you 150 litres of milk, I want to tell you that in another part of the world a cow gives 15,000 litres within the same period.

“The area where you now get six tonnes of onion, I want to tell you that for the past 15 years in Yemen, your colleagues have been getting 120 tonnes,” the governor said.

He expressed worry over the country’s population growth rate, saying that it might double in the next 25 years.

“The population is growing while the land is not growing but rather decreasing due to desert encroachment. We must do something about our food security,” Nyako said.

He described the recurring problem of sectional crisis in the country as a manifestation of poverty caused by hunger and malnutrition.

According to him, the absence of balanced diet in many youths has caused a deficiency in the growth and development of their intelligence quotient, leading them into negative thinking and violent tendencies.

“Research has shown that any child that is not given balanced diet before the age of six will lose 30 per cent of his IQ; and if he grows up that way, he will always find things difficult to understand.

“You now see a young man shorter than his father; you also see a 70-year-old man reading without his glasses but his son that is not up to 40 years needs glasses to read,” Nyako noted.

PoliticsMerger Talks Between The Ppa And The Pdp by oladayo042(op): 2:58am On Aug 18, 2010
Merger talks between the Peoples' Progressive Alliance (PPA) and the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) may be concluded in two weeks from now, said Sam Nkire, the National Treasurer of PPA. Mr Nkire, who stated this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria , on Tuesday in Abuja said that right now there was a deadlock. He, however, added that if the areas of disagreement were not resolved in two weeks as expected , PPA would field its own candidates for 2011.

" PPA went into a merger talk with PDP, that talk is something I regret to say is deadlocked now," he said. " We haven't progressed as expected, so we are still in the talks, the talks haven't broken down even as deadlocked as it may seem. If the talks collapse, PPA remains a political party and will field its own candidates for the forthcoming general elections in Abia State.''

According to him, the PPA still exists as an independent political party, funded through subscriptions by members and donations. He denied insinuations that Orji Kalu, former governor of Abia who recently defected from PPA to PDP, was the sole financier of the party, adding that he was one of the members that donated to the party. " No one man owns a party," he said. "Orji Uzor Kalu does not have the capacity to form a party as large as PPA. PPA has offices in 36 states of Nigeria including Abuja, and has offices in all the 774 local governments So, Orji Kalu, even if he has the money cannot be giving money to people to run the party.''

CrimeMother Of Two Claims Debtors Forced Her Into Drug Trafficking by oladayo042(op): 2:57am On Aug 18, 2010
One of the saddest people among the 20 drug traffickers arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), was Igbinigie Tina, a mother of two.

Tina claimed she would not have gone into drug trafficking, if customers who bought shoes and bags from her had paid up.

As soon as Tina was nabbed at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport,Lagos, for ingesting 89 wraps of cocaine, she knew the game was up. Tears filled her eyes as she realised that she might not see her two kids in a very long time if she was found guilty in the court of law and sentenced. She was especially pained because most of her struggle in life had been because of her children.

Tina was to board Alitalia flight to Italy, when she was nabbed. She hails from Benin City, Edo State, but had been living in Italy for over 18 years. She claimed to have lost her provision shop in Italy due to economic hardship and that when efforts to earn a living failed, she resorted to drug trafficking.

Narcotic agents are however not sympathising with the 41-year-old woman, for they believed she was lying in claiming financial hardship as her reason for going into drug. The Nigerian Compass learned that they would have bought her story if she had been a single mother, but it had been discovered that Tina has a husband in Italy.

She said: “I supplied bags and shoes to many people in Benin and they are yet to pay me. While trying to recover my money, I met a lady who told me that it was difficult to make profit from bags and shoes and that I should do the main business where my money will be promptly paid. That was how I was lured into drug trade. I actually needed money, but I now realised that I made a mistake. It’s the devil’s handiwork. My only regrets now are my children and husband in Italy. I am missing my family.”

Ukaegbu Sunday Urum is a trader based in Togo for over eight years. He ingested 87 wraps of narcotics and was arrested during the screening of Alitalia flight passengers. The Abia State trader, who is married and has a child, said that he used to buy clothes in Togo and to sell to his customers in Aba, Nigeria. He claimed to have lost his capital to fraudsters last January and found it difficult to recover from the financial loss. Urum also said that it was frustration that made him turn to trafficking in drugs.

He said: “After I lost my capital to fraudsters, I was frustrated. That is the genesis of my problem. In the process, I met a man in Togo, who convinced me to try drug trafficking. He collected my telephone number and asked me to go to Lagos and wait for further directive. When I got to Lagos, I got a call requesting me to go to Mile 2 and from there I was taken to a hotel where I swallowed the drugs. When I tested positive to drug ingestion, I was confused because all my dreams of starting my business again was dashed.”

Emeka Charles Ehirim is an automobile technician in Cartagena, Spain, for 10 years. He swallowed 77 wraps of narcotics and was to board KLM flight when NDLEA officials arrested him. Ehirim, who hails from Imo State, would have received 4,000 Euros. He said that he was introduced to drugs by a man he met at a night club in Spain.

“I am not happy, I feel very sad because of what I am going through in life. A man I met at a night club in Spain gave me the link to smuggle drugs. I agreed to do it because life in Europe is not what it used to be because there are no more job opportunities. My intention was to return to Nigeria and start a business with the 4,000 Euros they promised to pay me,” said Ehirim.

Ndinojuo Ozioma Jerome, a trader in Lagos, ingested 95 wraps, which he would have delivered in Italy for 3,000 Euros. The 50-year-old father of seven, said that the forces of life were against him.

His words:“I lost all my goods when Oshodi market was destroyed. That was how my problem began. I then went to Cele area of Lagos to start my business, but my shop was again demolished. I could not withstand the pains, so I left Lagos to the village with my family because I just could not cope with the cost of living in Lagos. Back home in Orlu, Imo State, I met a man in a bar who introduced me to drugs. I swallowed the drugs in Imo but unfortunately, I was caught.”

The last suspect, Okpala Malcolm Sunday, a factory worker in Italy, was nabbed during screening of Alitalia passengers. He claimed to have ingested 75 wraps of drugs at Enugu and took flight from Owerri airport. He had lived in Italy for over seven years.

Okpala said: “I have been jobless in Europe and trying to make ends meet. It has been very difficult. I only wanted to make ends meet when I was caught.”

Last month the agency apprehended a total of 20 suspected drug traffickers with a seizure of 28.130kg of narcotics.

Eighteen of the suspects are males, while two are females. Cocaine constitutes the bulk of the seized drugs with 25.185kg; cannabis is next with 1.500kg and heroin 1.445kg.

The only heroin seizure in the month under review was ingested by a professional lawn tennis player, Dairo Toyin. The last five suspects caught in July, ingested 423 wraps of substances that tested positive to cocaine.

NDLEA Airport Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar gave their names as Tina, Urum, 34, ingested 87 wraps weighing 1.525kg, Ehirim,38, ingested 77 wraps, weighing 1.420kg, Udenojuo Ozioma Jerome, 50, ingested 95 wraps, weighing 1.660kg and Okpala Malcolm Sunday, 49, ingested 75 wraps weighing 1.380kg.

Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, called for more public support to address the drug problem.

His words: “I urge members of the public to partner with the Agency by reporting suspected drug traffickers in their neighbourhood and also seek help for their loved ones with drug abuse problem. On our part, we shall continue to sensitise the public on the need to live a drug free lifestyle. However, we won’t hesitate to intercept drugs and prosecute offenders in accordance with the law.”

During his declaration to run for office at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku crashed to the ground. The photos shows him struggling to get back up.

Mr. Atiku, a former custom officer, was former vice president to Olusegun Obasanjo, with whom he fought a bitter fight during the 2007 elections.

Just like the event of his physical fall at his declaration, Atiku's political relevance must have crashed several years before this fall on Sunday. Like many Nigerian politicians, mr. Atiku has accumulated billions in inexplicable wealth.

PoliticsBirthday Message To Ibb: Southwest Is Your Waterloo!-afenifere Renewal Group by oladayo042(op): 2:41am On Aug 18, 2010
Afenifere Renewal Group is using the occasion of the birthday of former military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida to sound it clear to him that contrary to the false impression the political renegades of Yorubaland are giving to him, the southwest geo-political zone is going to be his political waterloo in 2011 as against the swing zone he is claiming.

General Babangida was quoted to have said recently that the southwest is going to deliver victory for him in the 2011 elections in spite of the many crimes he has committed against the country in general and the zone in particular.

ARG concedes to Babangida that the Constitution of Nigeria allows him to run for any office in the land and as such we are not saying that he should not waste his time in such an inglorious exercise.

We must however let him know that the memory of the people of the southwest is not as short as he thinks. In fact, there is a saying among the Yoruba people that “a 20 year-old pounded yam could be as hot as a burning coal through right preservations”. And the iniquities of IBB have been well preserved. Contrary to the “no-go-areas” he was disclosing to some journalists recently, the Yoruba nation will set all the sins of IBB before him and ask him why on earth they must swing the votes on his side.

The no 1 issue that would be taken up with him is the annulment of JUNE 12 elections won by Bashorun M.K.O Abiola and the attendant crises which consumed the lives of Abiola and his wife Kudirat, Pa Alfred Rewane, Alhaja Suliat Adedeji, Admirals Omotehinwa and Elegbede and hundreds of protesters mowed down on July 7, 1993 on the streets of Lagos and other cities.

The insults he heaped on the Yoruba nation that he tried to “assuage the feelings of the aggrieved people by supporting the candidacy of my senior military officer former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who in our estimation has an unshakeable faith in the unity of our country and who hails from the same state with Bashorun M.k.O Abiola”, has only complicated his case. Foisting Obasanjo on Nigeria as someone occupying the slot of the Yoruba nation is really another offence he will have to answer for.

In the days of electoral reckoning, Obasanjo who messed up the country for 8 years, Gbenga Daniel who took IBB to Abeokuta to dance on MKO’s grave and Adedibu’s thugs who are rooting for him in Ibadan will count for nothing!

Babangida would be asked to produce MKO alive before he can ask for votes in the southwest.

Beyond this, the Yoruba nation will also join other zones in Nigeria to ask him what happened to the 12.4 billion dollars windfall well documented by Okigbo Panel’s Report, who killed Dele Giwa which the Oputa Panel made recommendations on but was not released by IBB’s surrogate (Obasanjo); among many other crimes hanging on IBB’s neck.

We would have said Happy Birthday to the self-styled Evil Genius were MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Dele Giwa, e.t.c around to also look forward to their own birthdays!
