Some hoodlums on Thursday were seen exchanging blows and throwing bottles at one another over the money they found on the dead victims of the Associated Airline plane crash.

When our correspondent got to the scene of the incident, he observed that the hoodlums had turned the road leading to the crash site to a boxing ground.

It was learnt that when the hoodlums were assisting in the evacuation of the victims, they allegedly searched the victims’ pockets for money and other valuable things.

It was also learnt that they fight ensued due to alleged ‘insincerity’ in the sharing of the money they stole from the dead.

One of the hoodlums, identified simply as Loko, was heard saying, “You won’t believe that after the whole rescue thing, we luckily found money and they don’t want to share it equally.”

The crash of an Associated Airline plane conveying the remains of former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Agagu, members of his family and friends, in Lagos on Thursday created confusion in the Ibadan home of the deceased as family members halted preparations for his burial rites.

Those in the house were said to be preparing to travel to Akure for the lying-in-state ceremony when the news of the plane crash reached them.

A member of the family told our correspondent that some of them had already left Ibadan but returned immediately the news broke.

The source, who asked not to be named, said “Some of us had left before we heard the news but they returned to the house because they were not sure of what had happened. For instance, we did not know if the ceremony planned for the day in Akure would go on as scheduled. We did not know also the condition of those who were in the flight with the remains of the former governor. Loss of lives in the crash could put a stop to all preparations and that was why the journey was first cancelled.”

However, the journey commenced again at exactly 1.10pm with seven SUVs and a car with a number plate belonging to the University of Ibadan The vehicles drove out of the house with members of the family.

Another source in the house said one of the personal assistants to the late Agagu, who was with the family in the Ibadan house, received a call from the deceased widow, Olufunke, urging them to move on to Akure.

“He (the personal assistant) told them to continue with the journey and that mama (Agagu’s widow) had called and instructed them to move to Akure,” he said.

A few minutes after their departure, five policemen were seen around the house as the gates were locked.

Twenty-four hours after the  new automotive development plan was approved by the Federal Executive Council, the Federal Government on Thursday said a new tariff on the importation of cars would be announced soon.

The move will make imported cars more expensive thus, promoting the purchase of locally manufactured vehicles.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, confirmed the development during a chat with journalists in Abuja.

Aganga said the old tariff had been reviewed upwards, adding that the new tariff had already been approved by the Federal Government.

This, he added, was part of measures to develop the Nigerian automotive industry.

“The importation of Tokunbo vehicles will not be a major threat to the automotive development plan. The tariff for the importation of cars has been reviewed upward and will be announced soon,” he said.
