Facebook is to develop a ‘sympathise’ button to replace the ‘like’ button in certain situations. Facebook is developing a ‘sympathise’ button as an alternative to the ‘like’ button. If a user tags their status with a negative emotion, then his or her friends will be able to ‘sympathise’ with the post rather than press the ‘like’ button. Until now the ‘like’ button has proved to be unsuitable for use on gloomy occasions such as the death of a pet. Bad news such as the changing of a relationship status from ‘married’ to ‘divorced’ has also stretched the limits of the feature. The ‘sympathise’ button emerged at a Facebook ‘hackathon’ event, where the company’s engineers come together and brainstorm new ideas. Many of the site’s most popular features such as the Timeline and even the ‘like’ button have emerged from past such events. According to Dan Muriello, a software engineer at Facebook, the feature will not work for every post. However, he said if a user tags a status with certain emotions the result would be “five people sympathise with this,” instead of “five people ‘like’ this”. He said: “Which of course a lot of people were – and still are – very excited about. “But we made a decision that it was not exactly the right time to launch that product. Yet.” Mr Muriello did not give a timeline for when the ‘sympathise’ button might be rolled out. Facebook has long ruled out the idea of a ‘dislike’ button despite online campaigns by thousands of users on the grounds that it is too negative. A Facebook spokesman said that hackathons are ‘the foundation for great innovation and thinking about how we can better serve people around the world’. He added: “Some of our best ideas come from hackathons, and the many ideas that don’t get pursued often help us think differently about how we can improve our service”. Facebook is the largest social network in the world with 1.19 billion users worldwide, of which 24 million are in the UK, or almost half the population. http://www.punchng.com/i-punch/facebook-working-on-sympathise-button/ |

The Nkwerre Vigilante Network this week arrested a six-man gang specialized in the sale of human parts for rituals and transplant in Nkwerre, Imo State. The men confessed to kidnapping their victims at various locations in the state and using their parts for ritual purposes. Some parts they sold to people who needed them for transplant. Yeah, there are human beings like this amongst us. The men, who are mostly bricklayers, confessed that they sell the parts from N500k to N1million, depending on the parts in demand. Two of the ritual killers were found to be pastors. The men took the vigilante network members and some policemen to their hideout which is a forest in Umugara Village in Nkwerre. There, police found the decomposing corpses of some of their victims, mostly women and children. http://tiwasblog.com/2013/12/photos-6-man-gang-arrested-for-ritual-murders-in-imo-state.html |

ABUJA —THE Senate Committee on Aviation yesterday ordered the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, to suspend the recent charges it imposed on local and foreign registered private airline operators, on non-scheduled flights in Nigeria. The Committee in a tripartite meeting with NAMA management and private aircraft operators on non-scheduled flights said what was required at the moment was consultations and advocated for a stakeholders’ retreat immediately to iron out the cause of the current dispute between the operators and regulatory agencies in the aviation industry. Chairman of Senate Committee on Aviation, Hope Uzodinma advised private airline operators and NAMA to choose a date for the meeting to take a position on the matter but asked that the new charges be suspended until after proper consultations. Uzodinma also asked NAMA to immediately convey a stakeholders meeting in collaboration with the Ministry of Aviation for the purpose of consulting with the operators and adopt a levy that would be mutually acceptable to all parties. NAMA had recently introduced a new pay-as-you-go charge regime whereby foreign registered airline operators were expected to pay a flat levy of $3, 000, while their indigenous counterparts were levied $2, 500 on each flight embarked upon by their aircraft. It was gathered that before the new levy, the operators were charged based on their routes, navigational terminal and weight of their aircraft and the various amounts were paid to different aviation agencies operating at the nation’s airports. Spokesperson of the private airlines operators on non-schedule flights in Nigeria, Alhaji Bala Ibn Na’allah, had described the new levies introduced by NAMA as discriminatory because the arrangement was not applicable to airline operators on scheduled flights. Ibn Na’allah agreed that the Civil Aviation Act 2006 section 30 (2) gives power to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to charge levies but argued that such should not be imposed without adequate consultations with relevant stakeholders. He said, “We want to be led by the rule of law. NCAA did not consult us before imposing levies on us. We are urging the senators to impress upon the NCAA to always carry us along through consultations because section 70 (1) C of the act did not allow them to do whatever will be detrimental to the nation. “For every take off, we are paying $2,500. Why are we paying in dollars when it is not our local currency in the country and NAMA did not see anything bad in implementing such discriminatory policy? “It is discriminatory for NCAA to charge different levies for scheduled and non-scheduled flights. The law recommends payments either in local or hard currency but NAMA does not collect naira.” But Director General of NAMA, Mazi Nnamdi Udoh, noted that airlines operators were very crucial to the nation even as he corrected the assumption that his agency forced the operators to pay in dollars. Udoh said, “They are also at liberty to pay in naira. Payment in dollars is at their liberty. The provisions of section 30 were being used in the past to collect levies. The charges would make them to ensure sanity. “Before the new one-stop-shop payment, We were charging navigation, landing, parking and terminal navigation levies but services being offered in Nigeria must also conform to international best practices. “They don’t pay five percent charges out of the revenues they make. Safety is not cheap, the new levies are desirable because we have to maintain standards at all times.” Udoh commended the senate committee for its timely intervention and pledged to revert to the status quo ante. Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF), Dr. Babangida Aliyu, yesterday alleged that 400 prominent northerners have been bribed with a view to returning President Goodluck Jonathan to office in 2015. He vowed to publicly name those involved in the plot to ‘betray’ the north in 2015 “as soon as we lay our hands on the list of the people”. The Niger State governor spoke in Minna at the 25th anniversary of the enthronement of Alhaji Umaru Bahago as Emir of Minna. “We are looking for that list so that we will tell the people of the region that these are the people that want to betray you,” he said. “We heard a rumour that some people have a list of 400 prominent northerners that they are going to settle and that they are sure if they settle the 400 everything will be okay in 2015.” But he said the North has nothing to be afraid of in 2015 since election is a game of numbers. He said: “No matter what happens in 2015 we (northerners) should not be afraid because politics is a game of numbers. Through the ballot box we can always determine who becomes our leader. Do not be afraid, let there be 200 candidates, God will allow only one to emerge.” He expressed dismay at the outcome of the Anambra governorship election, saying: “we prayed that what happened in Anambra would not repeat itself in 2015 because that could cause a problem for all of us as a nation. “We must put our hands on the deck to ensure that INEC, and the people understand the right thing.” He paid tribute to the Emir’s late father and predecessor, Alhaji Ahmadu Bahago, as ” an epitome of leadership commitment and foresight, measurable by the time and energy he invested in everything. “I think the greatest legacy left behind for this nation by the late Emir was his ability to provide a pragmatic and dynamic leadership that balanced the interests of all the diverse people of Minna Emirate Council as a foundation for the remarkable growth and development we are witnessing in Minna today,” he said. He pointed out that there would be no ethnic violence in any part of the country if every leader behaved like the late Ahmadu Bahago. Also speaking, former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, said the country needs a visionary and focused leader to take the country to greater heights, adding that without peace and security the development of the country will be hampered. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/2015-400-northerners-bribed-betray-region-says-aliyu/ |
ZIMBABWEAN authorities say they have given foreign shop-owners mostly Nigerians and Chinese an ultimatum to shut down their businesses by Jan. 1. A top official of the black empowerment ministry said only Zimbabweans had the right to run shops that have sprung up across the country and are termed foreign businesses targeted under the nation’s black empowerment laws, the state-controlled Herald newspaper reported Friday. Those laws, passed in 2007, demand foreign businesses to cede 51 percent control to local blacks. The foreign shop owners have been criticised for taking retail trade opportunities from Zimbabwean traders by selling cheap imports. Poor townships and city flea markets have in recent years been inundated by shops run by foreigners. According to state media, shop owners who fail to comply will be arrested. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/zimbabwe-orders-nigerians-foreigners-close-shops-jan-1/ |

A 45-year-old trader, Muina Adelami, has asked a Lagos family court in Lagos State to dissolve her eight-year-old marriage to her husband, Shuaib, a clerical officer, on the ground that his sex drive was high. “I have managed to stay this long in the marriage because I thought his libido would go down but that has not been the case. “In the eight years of our marriage, we only have a child, I had two miscarrages as a result of excessive sex.’’ She informed the court further that her husband liked sex too much and gave her no breathing space. “We start having sex every night just before midnight and this goes on till the early hours of the next day. Many times, immediately after he comes back from work, he starts demanding for sex. ‘’He will refuse to stand up even when I am crying and will start beating me whenever I complain. “There were time I did faint, but when I came around, he would start again. “The way he’s going, he will kill me. I now look older than my age mates due to too much sex,” she said. In his defence, Shuaib admitted to having a high sex drive, but added that it was his right to have sex with his wife. “I was advised to marry a younger wife but I cannot afford that, that is why I take care of her and give her everything she wants. “I have been trying to change her mind on the issue of divorce, but she is adamant. I love her and would not want to divorce her. I also know that sex can’t kill her,” he said. The case was adjourned till December 4. http://www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/component/k2/item/26916-his-marathon-sex-sometimes-makes-me-faint-wife |

SUSPECTED members of Boko Haram terrorists have carried out a series of night attacks in Borno State causing havoc and killing 26 people in the process. This was even as reports emerged that the insurgents abducted a French Roman Catholic, Georges Vandenbeusch in northern Cameroon. Vandenbeusch, who moved to the area two years ago, was reported to have repeatedly ignored warnings by the French authorities that the region was dangerous. The Boko Haram insurgents in Bdagu, Izge, Hartsa and Yazza villages in Gwoza, Damboa and Askira-Uba Local Government Areas of Borno State, ransacked houses and killed their victims just as several hundreds were displaced from their houses. About 40 houses were said to have been set ablaze. An unconfirmed report said that three of the attackers were also killed when some neighbouring villages of Dille, Lassa among others mobilized and pursued the fleeing suspected terrorists to a nearby bush in the area. A source said in Bdagu Community that the attackers had between Monday and Wednesday, this week stormed the affected villages in two Hilux vehicles, three buses and about 30 motorcycles armed with AK47 rifles, and going from house to house to kill, loot and burning some selected homes. It was said that during the Bdagu night attack, about 40 residential houses and farmlands were burnt down by the sect members. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/boko-haram-kills-26-fresh-borno-attacks/#sthash.BbyAE3bm.dpuf |

The Nigerian Police said it has dismissed and charged to court one police corporal Anthony Onoja, who allegedly raped a two year old girl at Kabayi area of Mararaba in Nasarawa State. A statement today by the Force spokesman Frank Mba, said the attention of the police has been drawn to a news report of alleged complacency of the police in handling the case. He noted that, “Contrary to these false and clearly twisted facts the Nigeria Police has since 13th September, 2013, dismissed Cpl Anthony Onoja.” Mba added that, “The ex-Policeman who allegedly raped a minor at Kabayi area of Mararaba in Nasarawa State, was charged to a Nasarawa High Court, on 15th September, 2013, for the offence of rape, under Charge sheet No NSD/77C/2013.” He further said the suspect was dismissed after an in-house administrative disciplinary panel indicted him for the disciplinary offences of discreditable conduct and conduct unbecoming of a Police Officer. Mba added that after criminal investigation of the alleged offence of rape was conducted by the Anti-Human Rights Section of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Nasarawa State Police Command, the suspect has been charged to court. http://dailytrust.info/index.php/news/9270-alleged-police-rapist-suspect-dismissed-and-charged-to-court-police |
President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday ruled out payment of compensation to victims of terrorists attacks carried out by the Boko Haram sect and other groups in the country. Receiving report from the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North at the Presidential Villa, the President said the government will only look at ways to help the victims get back to their businesses. Despite the challenges faced by the committee at its inauguration, he said that it has laid the foundation for follow up action which would lead to the eventual control and end of the crisis. Even with the progress made in the fight against terrorism in the north, he maintained that the war is not yet won. He said: “We also noted the suggestion about the victims’ support because that is one of the terms of reference; how will government help to see that we can assist. Government is not going to compensate. It is not an issue of compensation but how do we assist people who have suffered to get back to business one way or the other. “Government will look into this and other recommendations in your report and see that the right decisions are taken. “Incidentally, we have security council meeting because this committee was an offshoot of the security council and we will review some aspects of this report and probably set up a team to look at it and work out a planned programme in terms of implementation of the recommendations.” On the challenging assignment, he said: “First, let me on behalf of government welcome you to the State House and indeed, thank you for accepting to serve for the period you have served. Even the day we inaugurated you, we noted that it was quite a challenging job. It is not a ballroom dance because you were asked to meet the kind of characters you cannot even predict their behaviour.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/jonathan-rules-compensation-terror-victims/ |
Telecommunications operator, Globacom, has said the rationale behind the slashing of its BlackBerry tariff by half is to encourage Nigerians to use data more frequently. In a statement, the firm said the unprecedented move was aimed at liberalising access to the modern tool for social and business networking. In addition to the tariff drop, it said there was a considerable increase in the data allowance for both BlackBerry 10 plans and the generic BlackBerry plans. The statement signed by Globacom’s Coordinator, Marketing, Mr. Adeniyi Olukoya, explained that the Absolute Month platform, which hitherto was N2,800 with 3GB data, now goes for N1,000 with 3GB data. The Absolute Week plan goes for N500 with 700MB and the co-month and co-week plans go for N899 and N400 with data allowance of 3GB and 700MB respectively. According to the company, the new BlackBerry subscription tariffs are for both old and new customers. The statement said, “Globacom is the first network to introduce BlackBerry service in Nigeria and we have continued to maintain the lead by offering subscribers the best and most pocket-friendly BlackBerry rates. Glo always has exciting offers for both existing and potential customers. “We are offering these new tariffs to encourage Nigerians to use data more frequently. This will make life more abundant for our subscribers.” http://www.punchng.com/sports/glo-justifies-blackberry-tariff-slash/ |
