The power of urine has been harnessed to charge a mobile phone with enough electricity to send texts and surf the Internet.

Researchers from England's University of Bristol and Bristol Robotics Laboratory said Tuesday they had created a fuel cell that uses bacteria to break down urine to generate electricity.

"No one has harnessed power from urine to do this so it's an exciting discovery," Ioannis Ieropoulos told the U.S.-based trade publication Industry Week. "The beauty of this fuel source is that we are not relying on the erratic nature of the wind or the sun; we are actually reusing waste to create energy."

The technology relies on passing urine through fuel cells made of microbes. As they feed off the urine, they produce electricity.

"So far the microbial fuel power stack (MFC) that we have developed generates enough power to enable SMS messaging, web browsing and to make a brief phone call," Ieropoulos said. "The concept has been tested and it works -- it's now for us to develop and refine the process so that we can develop MFCs to fully charge a battery."

Eight-month-old baby Xiao Bao was found in a pool of blood in his backyard after being stabbed over 90 times by his mother, who was angry because the baby bit her while breastfeeding, reports the Daily Mail.

The incident took place in Xuzhou in the Jiangsu Province of eastern China and baby Xiao needed more than 100 stitches.
The infant is fortunately recovering, but neighbors are pleading with authorities to take him away from his mother and the two uncles who live with them at the home.

There have been no reports that the mother was suffering with mental illness, but it appears that a clear case of postpartum depression is a possibility.

Symptoms of postpartum depression can present up to one year after childbirth, but typically are present by 3 months. They include feelings of anger, depression, suicidal thoughts and thoughts of harming the baby.

Unfortunately, women of low socioeconomic status are unable to spend 30 days taking care of themselves because they have to work.

Xiao’s mother recycles garbage for a living and her inability to mentally and hormonally adjust may have played some role in her vicious attack on her infant.

To date, there have been no charges pressed against the her.

Jyoti Amge, who is just 2ft tall, is dwarfed by the 1ft 3in pads of Brahim Takioullah.
Jyoti’s own plates of meat are a tiddly 3.72 inches, four times smaller than those of the giant Moroccan, who at 8ft 1in, is the world’s second tallest man.

Jyoti, 19, from Nagpur, India and Brahim, 31, posed to persuade people to join The Amazing Feet challenge.

The aim is to get 50,000 pairs of feet snapped and uploaded on the officiallyamazing.tv/feet website to set a record for the largest online photo album of feet.

Doctor Sergio Canavero of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group has outlined a medical procedure which he says will successfully connect a brain to a spinal chord - the major challenge for any such operation.

"It is my contention that the technology only now exists for such linkage," he writes in the Surgical Neurology International journal.

But how much would such a procedure cost?

Dr Canavero says you would have to put aside some $15 million for the operation alone.

Dr Canavero says his procedure is derived from successful head transplants of animals from experiments dating back to the 1970s.

The head of a rhesus monkey was transplanted to the body of another in 1970 in an experimental procedure.

The head was quickly cooled to about 12C and quickly transferred to a chilled new body.
Once the head was reconnected to the circulatory system, the body's heart was restarted and work initiated to connect the nervous system.

Dr Canavero argues that a "clean cut" by an ultra-sharp cutting implement was the key to success as it would allow the severed nerve cells to fuse with each other.

Late last month, scientists at Case Western Reserve University proved they could now restore some neural connectivity in the spinal cords of rats.

Perhaps all those people who have had their heads cryogenically frozen weren't out of their minds after all.

But apparently, for many of the world’s rich and famous, $150,000 is a fair price to pay to have their exclusive rides looking squeaky-clean. Paul Wilkins, who owns and runs The Ultimate Shine says his service isn’t aimed at the average driver who keeps his Ford Fiesta parked on the side of the road, but at rich car collectors who keep their rare and expensive vehicles in temperature-controlled showrooms and want them to look perfect. Although he doesn’t want to reveal the identities of his high-profile clientele, 34-year-old Wilkins says he cleans about three cars at the price of £100,000 per year. He also assures interested clients that they’ll be getting their money’s worth.

But how does one justify the £100,000 price tag for a one-time car cleaning operation? “Well, for that price I will fly out to any location in the world,” 34-year-old Wilkins says. “I’m usually dealing with serious car collectors who have temperature-controlled showrooms, so I travel to wherever they are kept.” After he puts on his overalls, Paul begins the cleaning process by decontaminating the body of the car and the wheels. Next, he machine polishes every bit of bodywork taking out any defects, a laborious process that can take up to a month. The dedicated car cleaner says he might have to go over it hundreds of time to make sure to make sure it’s completely clear of any marks.

Once that’s done with, he will go over the bodywork with a special alcoholic cleaning agent to ensure there are no oily stains left on the paint. Finally, it’s time for the waxing. The Ultimate Shine owner uses a special Carnauba wax which has been gathered from one of the tallest trees in a secret location in Brazil, priced at £65,000 ($100,000). His company offers different types of this luxury wax for every season, each designed to protect the car against any element.

“Each job is so different but what I say is that, for the £100,000 price, I will work on the car for as long as it takes. I’m a perfectionist so sometimes it’s taken me a few months before I’m happy to hand the keys back,” Wilkins told The Scotsman He’s even happy to offer a £300 ($460) valet for his clients, but says his true joy is turning amazing cars into “absolute perfection”.

A two-headed turtle has hatched at the San Antonio Zoo and officials have named her Thelma and Louise.
The female Texas cooter arrived June 18 and will go on display Thursday at the zoo's Friedrich Aquarium.


Zoo spokeswoman Debbie Rios-Vanskike (van SKYKE') said Wednesday that the two-headed turtle appears healthy and is able to swim and walk. She says experts at the zoo don't foresee any health issues for Thelma and Louise, named for the female duo in the 1991 Oscar-winning road movie of the same name.

The San Antonio Zoo is no stranger to two-headed reptiles. The facility was home to a two-headed Texas rat snake named Janus from 1978 until the creature's death to 1995.

Doctors and scientists have worked together to create an ingestible computer, that basically puts Google Glass to shame. The pill-form objects contain tiny sensors that help monitor the health of your body. The pills can collect data on how your systems are running, and transmit that information back to an external computer.

Several companies are currently working on pill prototypes. Just this last year, Proteus Digital Health raised more than $60 million dollars to create their version of a computer pill, which is actually powered by the body. Rather than an internal battery system, the pill has copper and magnesium ends which generates electricity to power itself via stomach acids. ..

The Proteus model requires that users wear a special patch that transmits information from inside the body to a cell phone app that tracks everything from blood pressure to body temperature to movement and rest patterns.
The development could have huge implications for everything from the monitoring of heart disease and diabetes, to the progress of schizophrenia or Alzheimer’s.

That’s great news for people who have chronic diseases that need to be managed; doctors and family members could potentially be connected to the system to help monitor the health of a loved one. But it also could spell trouble when it comes to privacy issues surrounding health information. After all, some of this data could be used to justify dropping or denying physically compromised patients from their insurance plans.

But if you want more shocking future news, Motorola is working to create a pill that would help identify and track you so that you could be physically linked to your electronic devices. At a conference last month, Regina Dugan, senior vice president of Motorola’s advanced technology and products group, discussed a pill prototype that would wirelessly link users to everything from their phones to their cars to their home security devices. Having trouble picturing it? Imagine that simply by touching the handle of your door you’re able to automatically unlock it. Or simply by siting in your car you’re able to turn it on. “Essentially, your entire body becomes your authentication token,” said Dugan.
Pretty intense, right?
