Culture‘MC Oluomo Is Not From Oshodi, Doesn’t Belong To Any Ruling House’, Regent by Oleys(op): 7:48am On Jan 10, 2022
The regent of Oshodi land, Alhaji Biliaminu Adisa Akinola, has made it clear that the chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly called MC Oluomo is neither an indigene of the community nor belongs to any of the 11 ruling houses. Akinola said this in an interview with Nigerian Tribune on Sunday.

The regent was reacting to claims that the union leader is seeking the obaship of Oshodi.

The regent, who has been managing the affairs of the community for years, while waiting for the installation of a monarch said, “Let me state clearly that Musiliu Akinsanya is on his own in his campaign for the royal stool in Oshodi land and he cannot be crowned the king.

“It is glaring that Akinsanya family is not from Oshodi land neither does he belong to any of the ruling houses in Oshodi. They are tenants. And how can a tenant become king over the real landowners? They are not part of us in Oshodi. I heard he is claiming to be from the Awori extraction but I don’t know which of the Aworis he belongs to.” In a warning to the Lagos State governor, the regent said, “If he is allowed to do that, it will amount to desecrating the Yoruba royal tradition.

“Royal stool is not what you can wake up one morning and decide to buy with money, no. There are procedures to becoming a king. I totally frown at it and I trust the Lagos State government will not want to impose Musiliu Akinsanya on the people of Oshodi land because he does not belong to any ruling house in Oshodi. He is a tenant in Oshodi. I have searched our history; I couldn’t find any link of Akinsanya family to the Oshodi royal stool.”

Christianity EtcPastor Ashimolowo Ordains His Second “runaway” Son As Pastor Of KICC by Oleys(op): 4:14am On Jan 04, 2022
Tobi Ashimolowo, one of the sons of Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo has now being ordained as a Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) pastor, after years of running away from ministry.

Sharing the ordination news on his Instagram page moments ago, Tobi Ashimolowo wrote:

“For years I ran away from ministry as I wanted to pursue other dreams I had, however I surrendered to God in 2016 when I heard the call. In that year I was ordained as a minister and I began full time ministry.

Yesterday God opened a new chapter and gave me double honour.

I was ordained as a Pastor and I was also made a Resident Pastor of our UK KICC Headquarters Prayer City/Hoe Street – alongside my mother.

The next slide is of @mrbenandoh prophesying about me being a Pastor back in September 2021 .

This is a massive responsibility which I don’t take lightly but I am excited for what God is going to do.

I thank God for this privilege and honour to serve His people.

I thank my father, mother, the Royals family, my mentors and every friend and family member that has believed in my call to ministry.

The shift has begun! “

In response, his wife, Toyin also shared the ordination post on her page with the caption: “

Yesterday my husband, father of my children & prayer warrior was ordained as a pastor!

He has gone from Minister Tobi to Pastor Tobi!

Not only that but he has also been appointed to the position of Resident Pastor of the KICC UK headquarters alongside my mother in love.

Wow! What an honour & what a privilege!

His sacrifice, obedience, love, courage, boldness, tears, labour – I have seen it all.

@tobiashimolowo does not play when it comes to the things of God. I repeat DOES NOT PLAY!

Culture‘Two Kings Can’t Sit In A Palace’, Battle Between Late Olubadan & His Successor by Oleys(op): 4:24am On Jan 03, 2022
On January 2, the entire world woke up to the news of the demise of Oba Saliu Adetunji, the Olubadan of Ibadan. The monarch died after battling a brief illness at the University of Ibadan College Hospital (UCH), Oyo State.

The first of 17 children, Oba Adetunji was born on August 26, 1928 to Raji Olayiwola and Suwebat Amope Adetunji in Ibadan, Oyo State. While growing up, he learned several vocational jobs before eventually taking up fashion designing as his source of livelihood in the early 1950s. In 1960s, Adetunji floated a music record label known as Baba Laje Records — with the wealth he had made from the fashion designing profession.

Adetunji was installed as the 41st Olubadan in March 2016, but about 15 months down the line, a great fight broke out between him and 21 of his chiefs, led by Senator Lekan Balogun, the Otun Olubadan and next in line to the throne.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

It all started with Senator Abiola Ajimobi, the then governor, elevating some high chiefs and baales to king status. Ajimobi had set up a seven-man commission led by Hon. Justice Akintunde Boade to review the 1957 declaration of the Olubadan of Ibadan. Among others, the commission was to explore the chances of having more beaded-crown kings in the ancient city.

Initially, Balogun had joined former Governor Rashidi Ladoja, the Osi Olubadan, to challenge Ajimobi for getting involved in the Olubadan traditional chieftaincy system. But the commission’s recommendation favoured Balogun and he soon backed out of the suit. Ajimobi crowned him and other Ibadan high chiefs and baales without the blessing of the Olubadan, whose exclusive right it was to install chiefs in the kingdom. Ladoja rejected Ajimobi’s elevation and went ahead with the legal tussle.

In 2018, an Ibadan High Court struck down the royalty of the 21 chiefs installed by Ajimobi, but the governor challenged Ladoja’s victory before an appeal court. The court, however, had not decided the case when the governor’s tenure elapsed and the incumbent Seyi Makinde was elected in 2019.

Makinde would not proceed with the case, but rather seek a peaceful resolution. The Court of Appeal granted the governor’s request, the state high court revoked the right to wear a crown given to the Ibadan high chiefs and baales by Ajimobi.

EXCHANGE OF HARSH WORDS

But the storm would not calm soon, as the high chiefs, led by Balogun, came up with a litany of accusations against the Olubadan. “Ever before the immediate past administration in the state initiated the review of the Ibadan Traditional Chieftaincy Declaration in 2017, two main issues had drawn a wedge between the palace and the members of the Olubadan-in-Council,” he said in a statement.

“The issues were the relegation of the members of the Olubadan-in-Council to mere onlookers and bystanders at the Olubadan-in-Council meetings where the oloris and some members of your Imperial Majesty’s family were the decision-makers.

“We are not aware of any of the Olubadans in the history of Ibadanland whose wives and family members were made members of Olubadan-in-Council. Our attempt to check this anomaly, through protest, was rebuffed and our personalities verbally attacked and recriminated by the oloris in the presence of your Imperial Majesty without a word of caution.

“The other issue which drew our ire and which was a reflection of the denial of our patriotic contributions at the Olubadan-in-Council meetings was the commercialisation of Ibadan traditional titles the moment Your Imperial Majesty ascended the throne of Olubadan, which was a sharp departure from what we all agreed to and practised during the reign of your predecessor.

“It sounds odd, unthinkable and unimaginable that people now pay as much as N30 million to be installed as a traditional chief in Ibadanland. This is against one’s antecedents and family contributions to the development of Ibadanland, which are the traditional yardsticks to measure qualification for installation.

“The implication of this ‘cash and carry’ approach is the installation of some people with a questionable moral background at the expense of decent and genuine people with a proven track record and whose genuine and verifiable source of income could not meet the demand of the palace.”

Responding, Olubadan, through Mr. Adeola Oloko, his media assistant, said: “He should have disclosed where and when the money was paid. Was the money paid in cash, cheque or through transfer? Was it paid in local or foreign currency? What kind of traditional chieftaincy title was the so-called person asking from Olubadan, as alleged by High Chief Lekan Balogun?

“How much gain would the person possibly make from the alleged N30 million investment on the chieftaincy title, which he could have possibly invested in more profitable venture?”

Oloko expressed regrets that despite Balogun’s claim of having a sophisticated educational background and age, he could not differentiate between free comment and libel.

“What the high chiefs did not tell the public was that in September 2019, when the high chiefs came to plead with Olubadan that the vacant positions from Otun Balogun down to Jagun on both side be filled, what His Majesty requested from them was the usual N100, 000 per step. Thinking that His Majesty would ask for more but he asked for less, the high chiefs prostrated for Kabiesi in appreciation. The implication of this is that if you have two steps to climb, you are liable to pay only N200, 000.

“If you have three steps, you pay N300,000. Even when some of the high chiefs could not afford to pay, it was Chief Yemi Soladoye-led Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) that bailed them out. So, how can the respected monarch ask for N30 or any million naira from someone who cannot afford N100, 000 only?

“The money in question, when collected, is always paid into the coffers of the Olubadan-in-Council. It is then disbursed at the end of every successful chieftaincy exercise and divided into three equal parts. While one part usually goes to Olubadan, the two other parts are always shared between Otun Olubadan and Balogun lines.

“When on 15th December 2016, the former governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi was honoured along with his wife, Florence, with the honorary chieftaincy titles of Aare and Yeye Aare of Ibadanland, that was how some of our high chiefs falsely accused Olubadan of having collected a sum of N50 million.

“They bluntly refused to be consoled until Ajimobi told them point blank that Kabiyesi did not charge anything, so he won’t give a dime to any chief. Former Governor Ajimobi is alive to confirm the story. We challenge high chief Balogun to produce demonstrable evidence of his claim.

“If you are Olubadan of Ibadanland at 91, like Oba Saliu Adetunji, what materialistic ambition could anyone be possibly pursuing with the enormous goodwill attached to the exalted throne? Suffering from what psychologists call projection, High Chief Lekan Balogun is a hawk who always labours under false pretence that all other creatures feed on chicks.

“We challenge Dr. Lekan Balogun to explain to the public who collected a sum of N6.5 million from Dr. Sunday Oladiti (now late) sometime in 2017 under the false pretence that he would help him secure promotion to Jagun from Oba Saliu Adetunji.

“When the man died without realizing his ambition, did High Chief Balogun refund his money to his family as his wife and children have come to the palace to seek Kabiesi’s intervention on the matter? We were reliably informed that the last minute withdrawal of High Chief Lekan Balogun from the suit he jointly instituted with Osi Olubadan, High Chief Rasidi Ladoja, against Oyo State Government in 2017 was not unconnected with financial assistance offered to him by the former governor. If in doubt, check the EFCC zonal office in Ibadan and possibly the State Police Headquarters, Eleyele for clarification.

“Another case is the case of Baale Alape in Ibadan North West Local Government Traditional Council where the high chief was fingered in the illegal installation of the Baale without the approval of Olubadan, who is the prescribed and consenting authority on all chieftaincy matters in Ibadanland. Only last December he came to the palace along with some high chiefs, notably High Chiefs Eddy Oyewole and Amidu Ajibade to prostrate and asked Kabiesi for forgiveness.

“If anyone is looking for a General to lead a battle, don’t go for the likes of High Chief Lekan Balogun. He is a General without troops. Imagine one single person signing on behalf of six other high chiefs. High Chief Lekan Balogun also claimed in the letter that Kabiesi installed some people with questionable moral background. Would it not be better for him to mention them so that they could be investigated and possibly be removed? Otherwise, this is a case of pot calling the kettle black.

“The high chief who prefers to call himself an Oba stated in his letter that any promotion granted the Mogajis before Ikolaba title remains a nullity the moment such is done under the seal of kabiesi as His Imperial Majesty. Firstly, High Chief Lekan Balogun is better advised to go and read the official programme of the Oyo State Government when Kabiyesi Olubadan was installed on Friday March 4, 2016.

“What he would find on the programme is the seal of His Imperial Majesty. Incidentally, High Chief Lekan Balogun was a member of the Coronation Committee. So, that was a clear 15 months interval before the controversial review of the Olubadan Chieftaincy declaration by the last administration.

“So, is High Chief Lekan Balogun saying that the Oyo State Government made a mistake then. Secondly, what law, what gazette or chieftaincy review conferred Imperial Majesty status on other Obas of equal status with Olubadan who are using it? We challenge the high chiefs to please produce it.

“The high chief was reported elsewhere of threatening that as kingmakers who enthroned Olubadan, they reserve the right to remove him. The high chief is better reminded that this empty threat is not new and sustainable, as he has said it in 2018 and denied it later. For the benefit of the public, there is no law that empowers any high chief or group of high chiefs to remove Olubadan. On the contrary, it is Olubadan who can suspend or peg any erring chief for act of contumely.”

Ahead of Makinde’s inauguration as Oyo State Governor in May 2019, the Olubadan told his estranged high chiefs to remove their illegal crowns if they desired to return to the palace and carry out their responsibilities, as two kings cannot sit in a palace. But until the king’s demise, there was no sign that Lekan obeyed, still insisting in 2017 that the said the high chiefs could not remove their own crowns.

Music/RadioWho Is That Nigerian Artist That Will Take Shatta Wale’s Challenge? by Oleys(op): 12:57am On Jan 01, 2022
Shatta Wale at his sold-out on Christmas day slammed and lambasted Nigerian artistes, saying, “I don’t need any fucking Nigerian artistes to sell out my concerts. F*ck all Nigerian artistes.”

Shatta Wale along with Medikal headlined his Freedom Wave Concert on 25th of December, where he sold-out the 40,000 Accra Sports Stadium.

He did not stop there, he went to the popular microblogging site to write a lengthy note: “As for Nigerians, they think they can always say what they want to say. F**k your talks. Y’all who think I spoke the truth; I don’t even remember you guys promoting Ghanaian artiste in your country. Until you guys will realize your artiste ‘blew’ in Ghana to say thank you.

“Bring it on and your artiste won’t get that hype they get from Ghana. I can make that stop. Don’t dare me.

“It’s the truth, your artistes come here for numbers before the world can recognise them. Appreciate Ghana supporting your artiste and stop this foolishness.”

“I won’t follow your artiste like some of my colleagues. If you do, I go wash your face with your own shame. Be thankful to Ghana for supporting your artiste and stop talking trash on here.

“No one can tell me anything. Bleep all of you; because your thinking is not my thinking. Appreciate Ghana. period.

“Stop talking if we sing good music. Kwasia can’t you see what KiDi is doing. Foolish talks and foolish comments. Learn to say thank you. Ghana is your gateway. “Your artistes know what they get from here. I don’t have anything to take from Nigeria to make me famous and make me some good cash.”

Of course, this did not go down well with Nigerians, they went on the defensive to attack him.

These are some of the reactions:

Popular DJ, BigN said, “My dear Shatta Wale, I watched this video more than once. I tried to see your point. We are not the enemy. You can’t blatantly say “F*cK Nigerians” and think there won’t be any repercussions. We are not to blame that you are a local champion. “Stop this bickering and talk true, Naija man don collect your babe again abi?” he asked in Pidgin English.

Comedian Ushbebe labelled Shatta Wale’s rant, “Useless talk … I no even expect more from you.”

For actor IK Ogbonna, the dancehall singer’s rant is simply hate speech against the Nigerian people and demanded an apology.

He said, “Mr Shatta Wale, you are a total and complete disappointment. In a time where we should be growing together and helping each other through creative collaborations. You should appreciate the Nigerian artiste because a win for any Nigerian artiste is a win for Africa. How do you promote unity with utterances like this? This is very weak from you. Deal with your complex issues and grow up. As an artist, I have featured in a few Ghana movies and I have also worked with amazing, adorable Ghanaians here in Nigeria. You should totally apologize for this #hatespeech”.

But Wizkid in a more mature manner while performing in Ghana a few days after, replied: “Listen Ghana, I got a message for you tonight, me I don’t care if you are black, white, or even blue or purple. I don’t give a F*ck, I will show you the same love I show my brother or my sister, yeah. And I want you guys to understand something menh, it’s one Africa. We move together in numbers; baby and I want you to know it”

Who is Shatta Wale?

Shatta Wale the popular Ghanaian reggae dancehall artiste was born to Charles Mensah and Elsie Evelyn Avemegah in Accra, Ghana on the 17th of October, 1984. He was named Charles Nii Armah Mensah. Shatta Wale attended Seven Great Princes Academy at Dansoman, a suburb in Accra, where he demonstrated an affinity for arts and acting rather than schooling.

Wale’s intense passion to do music made him lose interest in schooling while his parents wanted him to be a lawyer. His father forced him to complete his high school education in the Volta Region of Ghana. Nonetheless, he pursued his musical dream, started writing and recording music pieces from his school days.

The ‘Akwele Take’ singer started off with the name ‘Doggy’ in high school. This was inspired by a popular Ghanaian reggae musician, Yoggy-Doggy. He later decided to rebrand to “Bandana” and even released a hit track dubbed “Bandana from Ghana” in 2004.

In 2013, he reappeared not as Bandana but as “Shatta Wale”. According to him, Shatta, is a Jamaican slang for ‘Gangster’, while WALE is an acronym for ‘World Alerted Lyrical Entertainer’

His best-known singles are “Dancehall King”, “My level” and “We taking over” which led him to win the Artiste of the Year at the 2014 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Wale is also an actor who appeared in the films NeverSayNever, The Trial of Shatta Wale and Shattered Lives. Wale’s 2004 recording “Moko Hoo” was nominated for a Ghana Music Award.

In 2014, he peaked at number 38 on E.tv’s “Top 100 Most Influential Ghanaian” Awards chart. He has since then appeared on the chart every year. He was ranked “Most Influential Musician” on social media in 2017. He made a record-setting performance as a dancehall artist to have won 11 awards at the 2019 Music Awards ceremony.

He was the first Ghanaian to organize a digital concert on YouTube which was dubbed the Faith Concert. The concert was organized to bring hope to Ghanaians and his global audience at large during the fight against COVID-19 pandemic. Shatta Wale has won over 70 awards from 120 nominations from 2013 to 2020.

On July 31, 2020, Shatta Wale featured in Beyonce’s Already music video. This was a part of The Lion King: The Gift music album released in 2019. This standout track is arguably one of the best songs on the music album. When he was still Bandana, Wale took a long hiatus off the music stage, so long to almost be forgotten but he was in Jamaica, learning dancehall, the music genre he loves so much. He is presently the most Awarded Dancehall artist in Africa and one of the most awarded dancehall artists in the world.

His many controversies

Shatta Wale is traditionally married to Michelle with two children but the king of dancehall said he will finally settle down for family life when he turns 72.

Shatta’s inclination to controversy started at the 2013 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA). He claimed he was the legitimate winner of VGMA’s dancehall Artist of the Year and accused them of giving it to another artist “Kaakie”. He later released a song titled ‘Me Need No Awards’ in which he shaded the VGMA.

In October 2021, Shatta in a failed bid to trend, created a frenzy in the social media with a hoax that he was shot and receiving treatment, his fans latched on the fake news and reacted spontaneously. Ghanaian police investigated and found out it was a prank. Prior to his arrest, he apologized to his fans and people who had been affected by the prank in a Facebook post. He made reference to a prophecy that was made by Bishop Stephen Kwesi Appiah of New Life Kingdom Chapel that he would be shot dead on October 18, 2021.

The Bishop was also arrested over his prophecy and charged with causing fear and panic. He was declared wanted, arrested and charged to court for creation and circulation of information to create fear and panic. He was remanded in prison for a week until he was granted a GH100,000 cedis on self-recognition and the case adjourned.

A fortnight after Shatta was released on bail, he got caught in another confrontation with the Police as he stormed out of a meeting with celebrities called at the behest of Ghana’s Police Chief. Shatta Wale complained of unfair treatment at the meeting after all his colleagues were allegedly allowed to use their phones and he was not. He later reported to the meeting and knelt before the IGP George Akuffo Dampare to ask for forgiveness.

Who is that Nigerian artist that will take Shatta Wale’s challenge?

Hate him or love him, the controversial Shatta has made himself a force to reckon with as one of the established artists in Africa. With the influence and fans, he controls all over the world, he can be rated like top Nigerian artists such as Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage. Apart from demanding for more respect from Nigerian artists, he has also challenged them to pull a record crowd of 40,000 or surpass it in just one night!

Shatta’s figure is yet to surpass South African rap star, Casper Nyovest who sold 68,000 whopping tickets in one night to fill 95,000 capacity FNB stadium in Johannesburg.

Phyno is the only Nigerian artist in 2016 that filled the 25,000 Nnamdi Azikwe stadium in Enugu with the support of established stars like Olamide, P Square, Burna Boy, Patoranking, Mr Eazi, Onyeka Onwenu, Harrysong. He repeated it in 2017 at the same venue. Olamide’s attempt to fill 24,000 capacity of Teslim Balogun, Lagos in 2017 ended in dismal failure.

Who is going to pick the challenge?

PoliticsHow My Father, I & Male Members In My Family Were Arrested, Charged With Murder by Oleys(op): 4:33pm On Dec 30, 2021
The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, recently recalled a chieftaincy dispute which occurred in his community that led to the arrest and detention of his father, uncle, brothers, and himself on a trumped-up murder charge.

He stated this while eulogising the contributions of Emmanuel C. Ukala, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, on the occasion of the latter’s 65th birthday party held on Tuesday night in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

This was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s media aide, Kelvin Ebiri where the governor noted that it took the intervention of Ukala as their lead counsel for him and his family to be discharged and acquitted during the chieftaincy ordeal.

“There was a time that the entire family was charged for murder. Every male was taken away. We only had women left in the house with children between the ages of one and five. As at that time, I was reading law at the then Rivers State University of Science and Technology, now Rivers State University,” he stated.

Governor Wike disclosed that the legal luminary, in whose law firm he worked after leaving the Nigerian Law School, took his family’s ordeal very personal and gave his best to ensure that they got justice.

Speaking on his initial chequered political history, Wike said when he declared his intention to contest for the office of the chairman, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in 1998, some callous politicians in his constituency ganged up and conspired with the police to frame him up for armed robbery.

According to him, Ukala not only intervened and secured his release, but also defended him from the tribunal up to the Supreme Court when some vested interest in the council desperately attempted to deprive him to be sworn into office as Obio-Akpor council chairman.

The governor added, “throughout my chairmanship matter in 1998, when we had election down to April 4, 2000, when Supreme Court finally decided my matter, he (Ukala) never took a dime, one Naira.”

Governor Wike stated that when the Rivers State election petition tribunal annulled the 2015 governorship poll which he won convincingly, he contacted some lawyers to defend him in the matter and they demanded as much as N300 to N600 million as their legal fee. But when he approached Ukala, whom he described as a mentor, he was offered free legal service.

“Then my governorship election, most people may not believe it, from governorship tribunal down to Supreme Court, he never collected one dime,” Wike stated.

Governor Wike, who described Ukala as a refined and disciplined lawyer, applauded the legal icon for being a worthy mentor to him and his wife when they started their legal practice in Port Harcourt.

PoliticsNigerians, Behold The Seven Political Gladiators Set To Retire Buhari In 2023 by Oleys(op): 3:26am On Dec 29, 2021
By May 28th, 2023, President Muhammad Buhari would have completed his eight years in office after winning the presidential election in 2015. According to the constitutional limit provided by Nigeria’s 1999 constitution, he would have fulfilled his two-term limit of four years each and is expected to hand over to his successor on May 29th, 2023.

Based on past experiences, the new year 2022 preceding the handover date of May 2023 is going to witness a flurry of political activities. The political temperature will be picking up among the contending registered political parties, especially between the two leading parties, the ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC), and the opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). As at May 2021, there are currently 18 registered parties by the state electoral commission, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), but the battle of supremacy will be between the two.

Let us look at how these two parties are warming up for the political battles ahead, especially for the office of the president in 2023.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has just concluded its national convention in Abuja, with Dr Iyorchia Ayu of the North Central state of Benue emerging as the national chairman, succeeding Chief Uche Secondus from the South South state of Rivers. Other elective positions within the party have been filled, fulfilling the gentleman’s agreement of rotation of political offices between the south and north that was adopted by political parties in Nigeria. The convention was largely successful without rancor or recourse to legal battles in the courts.

The office of the president to be contested has been tentatively left open between the north and south by the PDP. It means any candidate from these zones can vie for the office in 2023, which is viewed by political watchers as jettisoning the rotation principle. The rotational principle was complied with when the late Umaru Yar’adua succeeded Olusegun Obasanjo, and Goodluck Ebele Jonathan contested after completing Yar’adua’s term in 2011.

Curiously, four Nigerians from the north have shown interest in vying for the highest office in the land. They are:

Bukola Saraki, Dr.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
Governor Tambuwal of Sokoto state.
Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state.
The first three candidates, including Alhaji Taminu Turaki, are not new to presidential contests; they contested in the last PDP presidential primary. It would be recalled that these four chieftains were among the 12 aspirants that converged on Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, for the 2018 convention, won by Atiku. While the former vice president clinched the ticket with 1,532 votes, Tambuwal, Saraki, and Turaki garnered 693, 317, and 65 votes, respectively.

Bukola Saraki:

Dr. Olubukola AbubakarSaraki, a medical doctor, was born on December 19, 1962. He was the 13th president of the senate of Nigeria from 2015 to 2019. He was previously the governor of north central Kwara state from 2003 to 2011 and was elected to the Senate in 2011, under the PDP, representing the Kwara central senatorial district, and then re-elected in the 2015 general elections under the party of the APC.

On July 31, 2018, he left the ruling party APC and returned to his former party PDP, where he became the opposition leader. Saraki declared his presidential campaign for the PDP presidential ticket in the 2019 election but lost the primaries to Atiku Abubakar. He was subsequently announced as the director general of Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign for the 2019 presidential election, which Atiku lost to the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.

Saraki declared his intention publicly when he visited Governor Ortom of Benue State, another north central state like Kwara, and insisted “this time we must stand for our own and charity, they say, begins at home.”

Atiku Abubakar

Atiku Abubakar, born on November 25, 1946, is a former vice president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 during the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo. He ran as governor of north-east Adamawa state in 1990, 1997, and later, in 1998, being elected before becoming Olusegun Obasanjo’s running mate during the 1999 presidential election and re-elected in 2003.

Since his entry into politics in 1993, Atiku Abubakar has unsuccessfully contested five times for the office of President of Nigeria in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019. In 1993, he contested the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential primaries, losing to Moshood Abiola and Baba Gana Kingibe.

He was a presidential candidate of the Action Congress AC in the 2007 presidential election, coming in third behind Umaru Yar’Adua of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the ANPP. He contested the presidential primaries of the PDP during the 2011 presidential election, losing out to incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. In 2014, he joined the APC ahead of the 2015 presidential election and contested the presidential primaries, losing to Muhammadu Buhari. In 2017, he returned to the PDP and was the party’s presidential candidate during the 2019 presidential election, again losing to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.

Who knows, 2023 could be a redefining moment for this politician and successful business man that has made his mark in Nigerian politics?

Aminu Tambuwal

Aminu WaziriTambuwal, born January 10, 1966, is the current governor of north-west Sokoto state in Nigeria, having won election in the 2015 general elections and re-elected in the 2019 general elections. Tambuwal is a member of the PDP and served as the 10th speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, also representing the Tambuwal/Kebbe Federal Constituency of Sokoto State. From 1999 to 2000, while working as Personal Assistant on Legislative Affairs to Senator Abdullahi Wali, the then Senate Leader, Tambuwal started learning the legislative ropes.

In 2003, he decided to run for a legislative seat as a representative of the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency. He was elected into the House of Representatives on the platform of the ANPP.

A few months before the 2007 general elections, he defected to the PDP, alongside the former governor of Sokoto state, Attahiru Bafarawa, to the Democratic People’s Party (DPP). But when the DPP denied return tickets to former ANPP legislators, Tambuwal swung back to the ANPP, where he eventually succeeded in picking up a ticket for the election.

But then again, when the ANPP governorship candidate for Sokoto State in the 2007 election, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, dumped the party for the PDP, Tambuwal also followed suit. He contested the PDP presidential primary, and as I have pointed out earlier, Tambuwal placed second with 693 delegate votes behind Atiku Abubakar, who won.

If he eventually throws his hat into the ring, a number of factors, including his young age among the contestants, political experience, and unblemished records from corruption indictment, may boost his chances in the next presidential election.

Bala Mohammed

“Some of you saw me last week, going around to meet former ministers, senators, and other leaders to discuss it (political ambition). But I have to consult traditional rulers and ulamas too because I need their support. “

This is the public statement the north-east Bauchi state governor, Bala Mohammed, made to show he has the intention of running for the office of president in the 2023 election.

Bala Mohammed, born on October 5, 1958, was a former minister of the Federal Capital Territory from 2010 to 2015. He was a senator between 2007 and 2010. He is a leading member of the opposition PDP.

He cannot be pushed away if he’s determined because he has successfully fought many political battles, especially against his political godfather and his predecessor in office, Isa Yuguda, to become Bauchi governor. He started as a senior special assistant to Governor Isa Yuguda from 2000 to 2005 before he was elected as a senator under the ANPP. He fell out with his boss and decamped to the PDP when Yuguda married President Umaru Yar’Adua’s daughter. Following the death of Umaru Yar’Adua, Mohammed joined the PDP and became a close associate of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Bala Mohammed was appointed minister of the Federal Capital Territory in March 2010. He was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan following his brave role in ensuring the ascension of then vice president Goodluck Jonathan to the presidency, following concerted efforts by the cabal of the Yar’Adua government to stop Goodluck Jonathan.

APC

The ruling party has scheduled the national convention party for February 5, 2022, as affirmed by the presidency and the caretaker committee headed by Mai Mala Buni, the governor of Yobe state. Other members of the committee are Ken Nnamani, Stella Okorete, James Lalu, Abubakar Yusuf, Akinyemi Olaide, David Leon, Abba Ari, Tahir Mamman, and Ismail Ahmed.

So far, vice president Yemi Osinbajo, Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello, and APC national leader Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu have expressed interest in running for president. Although the aspirations of the two (Osinbajo and Tinubu) have been kept under wraps, there is visible jostling and structures are being built across the nation to actualise their dreams.

Kayode Fayemi, the governor of Ekiti state, was previously rumored to be a presidential candidate, but little has been heard of him in recent months.

Yemi Osinbajo

Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo, a professor of law, was born on March 8, 1957, and is currently the vice president of Nigeria since May 29, 2015. Osinbajo is married to Dolapo (née Soyode) Osinbajo, a granddaughter of Obafemi Awolowo.

In 1981, he was employed as a law lecturer at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. From 1983 to 1986, he was a senior lecturer in law at the University of Lagos. From 1988 to 1992, he was an adviser (legal advice and litigation) to the attorney-general and minister of justice, Bola Ajibola. Osinbajo began lecturing at the age of 23. From 1997 to 1999, he was made professor of law and head of the department of public law at the University of Lagos. From 1999 to 2007, Osinbajo was a member of the cabinet and the Lagos state ministry of justice, also serving as attorney-general and commissioner for justice. Yemi Osinbajo was the pastor in charge of Lagos Province 48 of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

As a prominent member after the formation of the party in 2013, Osinbajo was tasked with other notable Nigerians to design and produce a manifesto for the new political party. This culminated in the presentation of the “Roadmap to a New Nigeria”, a document published by the APC as its manifesto if elected to power. The highlights of the roadmap included a free school meal plan and a conditional cash transfer to the 25 million poorest Nigerians if they enroll children in school and immunize them.

On December 17, 2014, the presidential candidate of the APC, Muhammadu Buhari, announced Osinbajo as his running mate and vice-presidential candidate for the 2015 general elections. On March 31, 2015, Buhari was confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of the presidential elections. Thus, Osinbajo became the vice president-elect of Nigeria. They were both sworn in on May 29, 2015.

Almost completing his second term in office with President Buhari, Osinbajo has shown interest in contesting the presidential election in 2023 with a supporter group under the aegis of the Progressives Consolidation Group (PCG) promoting his candidacy. The PCG has received approval from the APC to canvass support for his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 presidential election. If he succeeds, he will be the only vice president in Nigeria’s political history to succeed his boss.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu, born on March 29, 1952, is an accountant, former governor of south-west Lagos state and a national leader of the ruling party, APC. He was Lagos state governor from 1999 to 2007.

He attended St. John’s Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos, and a children’s home school in Ibadan, south-west Nigeria. Tinubu then went to the United States in 1975, where he studied first at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois, and then at Chicago State University. He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Tinubu worked for American companies like Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Haskins & Sells, and GTE Services Corporation. After returning to Nigeria in 1983, Bola Tinubu joined Mobil Oil Nigeria, and later became an executive of the company.

His political career began in 1992, when he joined the SDP, where he was a member of the People’s Front PF faction led by Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and made up of other politicians such as Umaru Yar’Adua, Atiku Abubakar, Baba Gana Kingibe, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila, Magaji Abdullahi, Dapo Sarumi, and Yomi Edu. He was elected to the senate, representing the Lagos West constituency in the short-lived Nigerian Third Republic.

In January 1999, he stood for the position of governor of Lagos State on the Alliance for Democracy AD ticket and was elected governor. Tinubu’s tenure as governor ended on May 29, 2007, when his successor, Babatunde Fashola of the Action Congress, took office.

In 2007, following the landslide victory of the PDP in the April 2007 elections, he played an active role in the merger of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and the new PDP (nPDP), a faction of serving governors of the then ruling PDP into the APC.

In 2014, Tinubu supported former military head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari, who had previously contested and lost in the 2003, 2007, and 2011 presidential elections. In 2015, Buhari rode the APC to victory, ending the sixteen-year rule of the PDP and marking the first time in the history of Nigeria that an incumbent president lost to an opposition candidate.

In 2019, he supported Buhari’s re-election campaign, defeating the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar. In 2020, following an internal party crisis that led to the removal of Tinubu ally and party chairman Adams Oshiomole, it is believed the move was to scuttle Tinubu’s presidential prospects ahead of 2023. Undaunted like a Trojan soldier, he has inaugurated the South West Agenda for Asiwaju 2023 (SWAGA 23) to actualise his ambition.

Yahaya Bello

Yahaya Adoza Bello, born on June 18, 1975, is currently the governor of north central Kogi state. He was born in Okene, in a senatorial zone that has never produced a governor. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1995 and obtained an accounting degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1999. Yahaya Bello further enrolled in a master’s program at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where he obtained a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) in 2002. In 2004, Bello became a chartered fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria. How he became governor was more of a twist of fate.

Bello was declared winner of the 2015 Kogi gubernatorial election after he was chosen on the platform of the APC as the replacement for the late Abubakar Audu, who originally won the election but died before the result was declared. On November 16, 2019, Bello was elected to a second term after he defeated PDP nominee Musa Wada by over 200,000 votes. Bello is the youngest governor in Nigeria and the only governor to be born after the Nigerian civil war. Almost completing his second term in office, Bello has declared his intention to run for the office of president in the 2023 general elections.

All things being equal, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, Nigerians, meet the seven political titans who are ready to retire Muhammadu Buhari to his Daura farm in Katsina state in 2023.

CultureBREAKING: Prophetess Naomi Silekunola Divorces Ooni Of Ife by Oleys(op): 11:37am On Dec 23, 2021
The wife of Ooni of Ife, Olori Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, has divorced her husband, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

The monarch’s wife, in a post on her Instagram page, said she will no longer be referred to as wife to the Ooni of Ife or as Queen of Ile-Ife but as the Queen of the people and mother of my adorable Prince.”

She explained that she tried to make her marriage work and smiled through the struggle, but realised that she had just one assignment which is her son.

“I bless the Lord almighty for His faithfulness in the last 3years of my marriage. In life’s journey, it isn’t how far. Still, how well, indeed though satan should buffet if trials should come, I have this blessed assurance controlling all situations and saying to me it is well with my soul. Certainly, it is well. I made my journey into the ancient throne of Ife with faith in my heart and love for the keeper of it.

“Few impressions I would love to correct. If anyone knows otherwise, they are free to come up with facts. Let it be known that this decision to move on did not come because his majesty is married to another queen. As many would love to assume, throughout our life as a couple, I was the only married wife to him. There were side attractions, but it was never an issue.

“I never approached him with any revelation of any sort, as many believed he contacted me first and made his proposal known several months later.

“The marriage was not an arranged one, as many have misconstrued. I never knew the prophetess said to have introduced me to him. Instead, he introduced her to me after I agreed to marry him. I was only being polite out of respect for him.

“I have never been pregnant all my life before Tadenikawo; my son is my first ever pregnancy with medical reports to back it up. The girl who is said to be my daughter is my niece

“I did my best to endure and make it work; many times, I smiled through the struggle, but I have finally realised I had just one assignment, my son, and when God is done, He is done.

“He chose Saul to be king, and when He was done, He told the prophet Samuel I have moved on. Religion was never an issue between us; please refer to my interview on News Central TV. Instead, His Majesty has a picture he would love the world to see and perceive him as and another one which is his true self.

“Today I announce the beginning of a new dawn and the close of a chapter. Today, I am a mother to God’s unique gift. I am no longer a slave to my thoughts of perfection. I, at this moment, announce that I shall no longer be referred to as wife to the Ooni of Ife or as Queen of Ile-Ife but as the Queen of the people and mother of my adorable Prince,” she wrote.

CelebritiesIkoyi Club Suspends Modupe Husband Of Folorunso Alakijja by Oleys(op): 2:20pm On Dec 21, 2021
Like a human giraffe, sniffing down his nostril at mortals beneath his gaze, Modupe Alakija, the beleaguered husband of billionaire businesswoman, Folorunsho Alakija, affected the poise of a beautiful bride. He paraded himself as the nearest thing beyond a tin-god so much so that friends, business associates worshipped the ground upon which he walked; albeit reluctantly.

Eventually, like all man-made deities, Alakija stopped resembling a ‘god’ or something like one after he was suspended some days ago by the prestigious Ikoyi Club, Lagos, for assaulting a fellow member .

Yes, the dark-hued man has lost worth like the last fading smile of a cosmic Cheshire cat.

Reports say he has put the ugly scenario behind him and literally cursing his luck for venturing into an unfamiliar terrain of pugilism.

His victim, a prominent member of the club, we heard, was ‘rude’ to Alakija, which drew his the ire. Alakija reportedly accosted him, spitting into the air and accepting it with measured cadence. Then, he stunned him with a blinding slap in a manner only Anthony Joshua would deal blows on an opponent. Still smarting from the scathing slap, the man responded and attacked Alakija with ferocity, who least expected it.

Before long, the man was on the floor being pummeled on all sides. By the time he was extricated from Alakija’s vicious grip, he had been to hell and back and sucking for air where there wasn’t.

Alakija has since been suspended for one year for engaging in such gross misconduct unbecoming of a man of his social standing.

Politics“is First Lady Aisha Buhari Pregnant” by Oleys(op): 10:24am On Dec 20, 2021

The president returned to the country on Sunday afternoon via the official BBJ Aircraft. But the image of the President’s wife, Aisha, is causing chaos across social media in Nigeria.

The Presiwdent and his wife were received at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja by the Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha among others.

Mrs. Buhari was seen touching her obviously bulging belly. It is however not clear if the bump is Pregnancy as the Presidency is yet to confirm or deny the reports.

PoliticsBisi Akande’s Book Meant To Paint His Political Friends Good & His Enemies Bad by Oleys(op): 4:16am On Dec 20, 2021
On Thursday 9th December, 2021, the prestigious Eko Hotels and Suites hosted a book launch titled “My Participations”. It was written by Chief Bisi Akande, the former interim chairman of the ruling party in Nigeria, the All People’s Congress party APC. Expectedly the presentation of the book paraded party big wigs led by President Muhammadu Buhari, Lagos and Ogun state governors Babatunde Sanwoolu and Dapo Abiodun, the senate president and the speaker of the house of representatives, Ahmad Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila respectively including the national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu graced the occasion.

A Lagos-based media and publishing company, Gaskia Media Ltd, is the publisher of the 560-page book. The book is Akande’s ninth book and since it was launched, it has turned out in recent times, to be one of the most controversial books going by the responses and reactions it has generated. Akande a former governor of Osun state and the former chairman of Action Congress of Nigeria ACN, one of the legacy parties that fused together to become APC, tried effusively and explicitly to narrate comprehensively his colourful and impactful political career.

Akande’s narrations of the event has become savoury and unsavoury to some key political actors going by startling revelations.

Who is Chief Bisi Akande?

Chief Adebisi Akande was born in Ila Orangun on 16 January 1939 in Osun state. A conservative public administrator, established politician and an “Awoist” (a disciple of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo). He was a teacher, an associate member of chartered institute of secretaries, fellow chartered institute of cost and management accountants and worked with notable organisations such as British Petroleum from 1963 to 1979 before taking a leave of absence to serve in late Chief Bola Ige’s government of old Oyo state from 1979 to 1983. He was first appointed the secretary to the state government, but later replaced late Chief S M Afolabi as the deputy governor in 1982 when the latter fell out with Ige in a protracted political struggle.

After the military take over in 1983, Akande was arrested along with Ige and other politicians, jailed for 42 years by the military tribunal set up by Major General Muhammadu Buhari for ‘conspiracy to unlawfully enrich his party” Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN. He was released in 1986 by General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida that succeeded Buhari’s government.

In the fourth republic that ushered in democracy in 1999, Chief Akande who was the chairman of Afenifere in Osun state, a socio political south west group, with other notable Yoruba political leaders, co-founded the Alliance for Democracy AD, a political party he used to contest and became the governor of Osun state from 1999 to 2003. His tenure as governor witnessed unprecedented infrastructure development laying a solid foundation for the young agrarian state.

Akande’s former boss, Chief Bola Ige also sought the nomination of AD as the presidential candidate but in a rare political shenanigan was denied. Chief Olu Falae was voted to contest against the People’s Democratic Party PDP presidential candidate, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999. Ige who was the deputy chairman of Afenifere and a strong member of AD felt betrayed and slighted to have lost to a less colourless Falae.

Olu Falae lost to Obasanjo in the 1999 presidential election, Obasanjo invited Bola Ige to serve as a federal minister. Ige abandoned his party to serve in opposition government. This action created a wide gulf in the party that led to the creation of a faction in AD and Afenifere. Akande and the then governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu belonged to the faction of Bola Ige.

As governor of Osun state, Akande re-enacted the cardinal policy of free education and free medical of the old Awolowo’s UPN and improved water supplies. His four years was dogged with struggles with Osun state civil service following his unpopular policy of trimming down with massive layoffs in public service.

Akande had a long running political battle with his deputy, Iyiola Omisore (a prominent son of Ile Ife) that distracted his government, it also led to a face off with Ooni of Ife Oba Okunade over the dissolution of Council of Obas and Chiefs in 2001. This prolonged face off polarised the party and the state that made Omisore to decamp to the opposition party PDP.

On 24 December 2001, Akande’s main supporter and his former boss, Bola Ige, the then minister of justice, was murdered in his house in Ibadan. The murder of Ige was linked to the feud between Akande and the deputy governor, Iyiola Omisore. The murder followed another murder the previous week of Osun State legislator Odunayo Olagbaju, who was bludgeoned to death outside his home. Olagbaju was a supporter of Omisore. Akande ran for re-election in 2003, but was defeated by Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola of (PDP).

In September 2006, the Akande’s faction formed a party Action Congress of Nigeria. In February 2013 the party announced plans to merge with other parties: Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a faction of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to form the All Progressives Congress (APC). In 2015, Buhari won Presidential election on the platform of APC. Akande as the interim chairman of APC was active in the emergence of Buhari and also his re-election in 2019.

Akande’s book of controversy

Autobiographies are meant to give accurate records of events, to set the record straight, shed more lights to knotty questions and to enrich political discourse in Nigeria. Unfortunately, Akande’s autobiography revealed himself as a politician has created more controversies rather than helping to solve solutions to political mysteries. It seems Akande’s objectives of writing this book “My Participations” are to settle old scores with his political enemies and to beautify his friends.

Let us examine some of the contentious areas he deliberately falsified events to suit his narratives and to befuddle his readers and admirers.

1. On Olusegun Obasanjo

On Olusegun Obasanjo, he wrote: “I knew him to be a faithless suitor and an unblinking philanderer on the political field. You trust him at your own peril.”

“I was therefore surprised that after I had been rigged out in 2003, Obasanjo would not relent in his effort to bring me closer to himself. Many of those close to the president were bringing messages to me that Obasanjo would want me to serve in his government.

He said there was no way he could agree to serve in any government headed by Obasanjo and that he had no intention of putting himself in danger by aligning with Obasanjo for whatever reason.

“I have heard of the story of Ken Saro Wiwa, the novelist who was the leader of the Ogoni people of Rivers State, refused to serve under Sani Abacha and that was why he was eventually killed along with eight of his compatriots. I didn’t want Obasanjo to ask me.

“If he asked me personally and I refused, he might feel deflated and he might not allow me to return home alive, so I quickly called my ADC and asked him if I had any ticket for Lagos-London flight. He said ‘Yes’, I asked him to book and confirm a seat for me immediately. I drove to the airport to quickly board a Virgin Atlantic flight to London without waiting for another from Chief Babalola.

“I got to London in the evening. On May 30, 2003, Segun Osoba phoned to chide that ‘Eiye o so fun Eiye pe oko nbo!’ (That I escaped without confiding in anybody). I didn’t want anyone else to reach me in London, Therefore, I quickly moved to a resort in the Black Sea and I arranged for my wife and daughter to join me,” he added.

Akande’s account is far from the truth with what he wrote about Olusegun Obasanjo. Apart from Bola Ige who was assassinated, other top politicians like ex-chairmen of All Nigeria’s Peoples’ Party APP Mahmud Waziri and Akande’s AD Ahmed Abdulkadir respectively served in his government and they did not lose their lives. Akande should have been more forthcoming with the real reasons why he lost his re-election. How on earth did he think he could have won when he retrenched bulk of the civil servants in Osun state. In fact, lives of many families where both husbands and wives lost their jobs were distorted and it took while for some families to recover.

In addition, how did he think he would have won his re-election with a deeply fractionalised party resulting from the protracted battle he had with his erstwhile deputy, Iyiola Omisore? He should have been more realistic and forthcoming in blaming himself rather than blaming Obasanjo.

2. On Iyiola Omisore

Chief Bisi Akande had no good words for him: “Iyiola Omisore crept into my life like a silent malignant cancer. He came in full force. In a few months, I thought I knew him. I regret I did not know him in his true colours,”. He accused him of corruption, withdrawing party funds from one Sola Akinwunmi using his name without his authority.

“He would go to the party secretariat and use my name to collect money, sometimes, N100,000. On one occasion, Ayo Opadokun lost his father in Offa, Kwara State and we thought we should honour him. I said I would visit him. I funded a gift from my own pocket for my visit to Opadokun in Offa.

” Then, one Omisore’s messenger came and met me with Opadokun. He whispered to me that his boss sent him to give money to Opadokun and also give him N50,000 on my behalf. I told the emissary not to worry about mine because I had already seen Opadokun. It was later I learnt that Omisore took money on my purported authority from the party secretariat for the simple act of condolence,” he stated.

This one-sided revelation of events is expected from Akande who likes to blame others for his political misfortunes. He did not reveal the secret political agreement he had with Omisore for promising to relinquish power to him after 4 years in office. He failed to disclose that Omisore financed his campaigns and the election based on this agreement.

3. On Afenifere leaders: Ayo Adebanjo, Olu Falae, Olanihun Ajayi

“I was not surprised that three old men who were virulently opposed to our aspirations in the APC found their ways into the Jonathan Conference. These men: Sir Olaniwun Ajayi, Chief Ayo Adebanjo and Chief Olu Falae were once our leaders in the old Afenifere until the passage of Papa Adesanya.

“They could not find any younger Yoruba to send to the conference to represent our interest. They believed, even in their old age, that they were the only people who could have gone there. Sir Ajayi, who was close to 90 at the time of the Conference, has since joined his ancestors. Chief Adebanjo celebrated his 90th birthday in 2018. Chief Falae is in his 80s. Note that Jonathan paid the conference delegates generous allowances!”

“The old Afenifere and PDP coalition was fronted by these three men and General Obasanjo. Chief Adebanjo, the most vociferous of them, is a blank politically-minded leader who recognises readily and always that he never has what it takes to aspire for high political positions.

Continuing, Akande alleged that Adebanjo coerced Tinubu to build a house for him in the Lekki area of the state.

“One day, Sir Olaniwun was launching a book at Muson Centre, Lagos. After the book presentation, Tinubu said I should not go and that he would like to see me. We met in a small room where he also invited Sir Olaniwun Ajayi. ‘Papa, you can see that this document is old, Tinubu said as he handed over a big envelope to Ajayi. This is your C of O (Certificate of Occupancy)!’

“Tinubu told me later that after he presented Adebanjo’s C of O to him, Adebanjo was always pestering Tinubu until he helped built a house on the plot. The street was also named in honour of Adebanjo and he is living in that house now at Lekki Phase One,”

It is worrisome Akande’s choice of words in describing his former colleagues is full of deep-seated animosity, bile and anger. He lumped Obasanjo’s name in the mix, who had never been associated with Afenifere to suit his jaundiced position. He went against the Yoruba norm that one does not speak ill of the dead with the way he thoroughly lambasted late Olaniwun Ajayi. Akande has not gotten over the disintegration of Afenifere and the eventual loss of his governorship re-election in Osun state, so he must blame others behaving like a drowning man that must pull everybody down with him.

I wonder what Akande wanted to achieve in bringing back old rivalries. Are there lessons to learn or he just wanted to prove that he’s far better than his colleagues. Unfortunately, Akande has successfully exposed himself and his colleagues as pretentious and fake “Awoists” that joined politics not for the overall interests of the people they represent but to pursue self-interests and personal enrichments.

4. On Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Guided by stomach infrastructure, he painted former governor of Lagos State and the national leader of APC, Bola Tinubu an “angel” and in very pretty light. Akande is a political soul mate of Tinubu transiting from AD, ACN and presently APC. He owes Tinubu’s benevolence for his relevance in Nigeria and the ruling government of APC. Curiously Akande and Tinubu belonged to Bola Ige’s factional AD and both have managed to re-invent themselves into national consciousness.

Akande’s twist of events that led to the emergence of Professor Yemi Osinbajo as the running mate to President Buhari leaves a sour taste in the mouth . Both Rauf Aregbesola and senator Ibikunle Amosun that played crucial roles would have been shocked with the distorted version of Akande. Aregbesola was conspicuously absent at the presentation of the book.

Tinubu has not left anyone in doubt that he wants to contest the 2023 presidential elections so one can understand why Akande is doing image laundering for his political soul mate.

This contrast is suspect. He has more glowing tribute for Tinubu.

“Tinubu is a man of exceptional quick reflexes who had interpretations for different and alternating moods of others around him with instinctive striving and sensitive hormones”.

“For others in his positive antenna, he admires, protects and defends with passion. Bola Tinubu is blindly generous and dangerously humorous. In his generosity, he relishes most political associates, and others with absolute optimism and invariably, in most cases, he indiscriminately accommodated many of them to his utter detriment.

“In his humour, he is commonly characterizing and vocalizing the mannerisms of his victims in ridiculous epithets. All along, we argued too constantly and quarrelled a lot too often on issues of political discretions.

“However, despite my constant talking down impudently on him with pontification about my old-time political experiences, he has refused to give up on me. He always makes me feel resolutely pampered. And we came, at last, to trust each other absolutely,” he added.

5. On President Buhari

“We know you love the country, but we want Nigeria to be peaceful, to prosper. We abuse you for everything that is wrong with the country. We accuse you of all that is wrong, even though we are not honest ourselves… we know we are fraudulent, cheaters, we know we are deceitful: we know we are doing wrong, we still blame you for it. I don’t sympathise with you because you applied for the job”

It is pure mischief that Baba Akande can easily paint Buhari an image of a venerable leader governing over a degenerate nation. This is hypocrisy and sycophancy taken too far.

Haba!!!

If for any reason, Akande that painted himself as a conservative and frugal man should be able to speak truth to power that Nigerians have been suffering from security issues, deprivation, suppressed by hunger, hopelessness under Buhari’s government. As a result of Buhari’s misrule, Nigerians deserve compassion and respect from Akande. Given his advanced age, he should not have exercised fear to say the truth without fear or favour but in contrast, he spoke tongue in cheek to patronise the President. He should have spoken about lives that have been lost through kidnapping, banditry, insurgency and total helplessness of the citizenry. He should have told him how many Nigerians are going to bed hungry and Nigeria is presently the poverty capital of the world.

He should have berated him for always at every given opportunity, rushing off to the United Kingdom to see his doctors and not showing willingness to improve or patronise our parlous health services at home. He should have told him about the numbers of children that are out of school and his homestead has become a theatre of the absurd, anarchy reigns due to the precarious security challenges in the north.

In response, Buhari who jailed Akande some years ago for corruptly enriching himself said the author has retained his “inflexible integrity” in and out of public office, never accepting or offering bribes. Quoting a famous Hausa saying, ”Labarin zucciya a tambayi fuska” (loosely translated -if you want to know what is in a man’s heart watch his face), President Buhari affirmed that Akande has a permanent smile on his face, saying: “He is the type I will go into the jungle with.”

Buhari’s statement is a disservice to his fight against corruption, a ruse to hoodwink gullible Nigerians. If Buhari can reduce corruption to an act of refusing or accepting bribes, then he should be reminded that it is more than that. What about himself finding comfort among many politicians that brought him to power with ill-gotten wealth, his garb of integrity has been torn to shreds. It speaks volume of his hollowness and insincerity.

It is really sad that young Nigerians that have been looking for role models have been repeatedly denied with the likes of Akande that has wilfully blown away every opportunity given to them to serve Nigeria. Our political leaders are more interested in filthy lucre to satisfy their pecuniary gains. Stories of Tinubu building homes for Ayo Adebanjo in Lekki and also, Akande suddenly becoming rich overnight without any visible business interests, owning a palatial house in his home town Ila Orangun, Ibadan and the United Kingdom has exposed our vacuous and empty political leaders’ quest for material gains.

I believe Baba Akande has created more enemies for Tinubu with the deliberate falsification of political events. He has opened more flanks for Tinubu’s political foes to attack him now that everything is in the public domain. It is left to be seen if this puerile white washing of Tinubu by Akande will enhance or destroy the former’s ambition.

The objective of Chief Bisi Akande in writing this controversial book is to paint his political friends “good” and his enemies “bad”. Baba Akande who is 82 years ought to be reconciling with his conscience and his creator but has lost a golden opportunity to redeem himself from the obvious failings of a government he promoted and also an active participant.

History will not forgive him.

Foreign AffairsWhy North Korea Bans Citizens From Laughing Or Drinking Alcohol For 11 Days by Oleys(op): 3:51am On Dec 17, 2021
North Koreans have been banned from laughing, drinking, or showing signs of happiness for 11 days to mark the tenth anniversary of former leader Kim Jong Il’s death.

Government authorities have ordered the public not to show any signs of happiness while North Korea commemorates the 10th anniversary of his death.

Kim Jong Il ruled North Korea from 1994 until his death in 2011.

He died of a heart attack on December 17 2011 at the age of 69 after ruling the country for 17 years in a brutal and repressive dictatorship.

North Korea bans citizens from laughing, drinking alcohol, and showing signs of happiness for 11 days

He was then succeeded by his third and youngest son, current leader Kim Jong Un.

Now, ten years after his death, North Koreans are being forced to observe the 11-day mourning period.

“During the mourning period, we must not drink alcohol, laugh or engage in leisure activities,” a North Korean from the northeastern border city of Sinuiju told Radio Free Asia (RFA).

The source added that North Koreans are not allowed to go grocery shopping on December 17 – the anniversary of Kim Jong Il’s death.

They added: “In the past, many people who were caught drinking or being intoxicated during the mourning period were arrested and treated as ideological criminals. They were taken away and never seen again

“Even if your family member dies during the mourning period, you are not allowed to cry out loud and the body must be taken out after it’s over. People cannot even celebrate their own birthdays if they fall within the mourning period.”

The mourning period held every year for Kim Jong Il is usually 10 days, but this year it will be 11 days to mark the tenth anniversary of his death.

FamilyNdubuisi Kanu’s Second Wife Urge Court To Recognise Her Children As Heirs by Oleys(op): 3:51am On Dec 15, 2021
Mrs Josephine Ndubuisi-Kanu, one of the widows of retired Rear Adm. Ndubuisi Kanu, a former Military Administrator of Lagos and Imo, on Tuesday asked an Ikeja High Court to recognise her children as heirs to the estate of their father.

NAN reports that Josephine, through her counsel, Mr Ben Ediowere, asked that all the records of the court should reflect that she was wife to Kanu.

“She also has two children from the union who are entitled to the estate,” the counsel said.

Responding, Justice Christopher Balogun asked if Josephine and her late husband were married under the Matrimonial Causes Act.

Ediowere responded in the negative.

The judge said that the Act recognised only one wife.

Balogun, however, said that under the law, the children of the union would be entitled to the estate.

Also, Josephine’s counsel informed the court that Kanu’s other wife, Gladys, filed a suit in Abia over the estate.

“This court has no jurisdiction over landed property in Abia State,” the judge responded.

Counsel to Gladys, Mr John Duru, said that he had filed a writ on behalf of his client, asking the Nigerian Navy to pay the deceased’s entitlements as a high ranking officer.

Earlier, Balogun expressed surprise that Kanu’s family members were filing various applications through their counsel over the estate.

“After sorting out the issues with the burial of the former Governor of Lagos, I was expecting that on subsequent court dates, you will be filing terms of the settlement,” Balogun said.

“However, I am not ordering that you should go for settlement, it is only advice. If you cannot settle, we will have to proceed to trial.”

The judge adjourned the case until Jan. 31 for mention.

NAN reports that Kanu died on Jan. 13 at the age of 77. Following his passing, there was a family dispute about how the funeral should be conducted.

Gladys filed a suit against her stepchildren, the Nigerian Navy and Josephine, seeking to be allowed to participate in Kanu’s burial rites.

The respondent to the suit are Kelly Kanu, Nigerian Navy, Simone Abiona (Nee Kanu), Andrey Joe-Ezigbo (nee Kanu), Paula Kanu and Karen Johnson (Nee Kanu).

The others are Jeffery Kanu, Laura Kanu, Stephen Kanu and Josephine Ndubuisi-Kanu.

During proceedings on Oct. 11, Balogun gave an order on how the funeral rites of the late military administrator should be conducted.

Addressing the court then, Gladys had described herself as Kanu’s only legal wife. She said that she and the deceased were co-habiting until his death.

“We wedded legally in the church, I was married to him for 27 years but I was with him for 31 years,” she said.
