The people of Oyo State, Nigeria and indeed the whole world will recall the highly condemnable events of Monday 6th June 2016 which witnessed violence and wanton destruction of government property and those of individuals and corporate bodies by students and teachers of some schools in Oyo State.

This violent activity threatened the peace and security of the state and endangered the lives of the students who participated in this breach of peace and affront on constituted authority. Considering the need for strong character moulding and to emphasize the importance of good conduct and acceptable behaviour for the leaders of tomorrow, the students must tender a written apology to the government through the school management.

The Government of Oyo State wishes to reiterate its commitment to ensuring the security and safety of lives and property within the state.

Politics / Father Missed Son's One Day Governor Meeting With Ambode by olillywales(m): 1:50pm On Jul 09, 2016
Winner of the 2016 Spelling Bee Competition, Master Olaseinde Olufemi Joshua on Friday narrated how his father, Mr. Olaseinde missed the meeting with Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and members of the State Executive Council.

Joshua, a student of Shasha Community Senior High School in Alimosho area of Lagos, who spoke at the Lagos House in Ikeja while being hosted as the 16th One-day Governor of the State, said his father would have loved to be present at the event but was unable to attend due to some health challenges.

Besides, Joshua described Governor, Ambode as the most labour-friendly Governor in Nigeria.

He said despite the dwindling allocation from the Federal Government, Governor Ambode has remained committed to the prompt payment of workers salary.

He said: "While over 29 states of the federation cannot afford to pay their workers, I really commend the Governor's hard work and determination to take Lagos State to the highest level." Joshua added that so far, Governor Ambode had lived up to the true meaning of the acronym of his name which he described as "AMBODE - Ambassadors of Meritorious, Brilliant, Organised and Dedicated Entity."

Responding, Governor Ambode ordered that Joshua's father be treated at the medical facilities of the State Government.

A deeply touched Governor Ambode said: "It is unfortunate that his father could not make it for this very special occasion in the life of his child but will be attended to in the health facilities of the State Government."

Besides, Joshua was given a laptop, printer and generating set courtesy of the Governor's Office while other winners of the competition were given tab each.

Politics / Eid- El- Fitr: U.S Warns Of Boko Haram Attacks In Lagos by olillywales(m): 12:58pm On Jul 05, 2016
United States Consulate in Nigeria has issued a warning that terrorist groups may be planning to launch attacks on hotels in Lagos, especially those heavily patronized by expatriates during the Eid-al-Fitr holiday, today or tomorrow.

The Consulate, in security alert message for U.S citizens in Lagos, Nigeria published on its website on Tuesday said terrorist groups might be planning attacks against hotels in Lagos “including those located on waterfronts”

The statement read: “The U.S. Mission in Nigeria advises that groups associated with terrorist activity might be planning attacks against hotels in Lagos frequented by international visitors, including those located on waterfronts, during the Eid-al-Fitr holidays (5 and 6 July 2016).

“The U.S. Mission in Nigeria reminds you to review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.”

“Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security,” the Embassy said on it website.

But Boko Haram insurgents, the active terrorist group in Nigeria has not succeeded in launching a major attack in Nigeria, despite similar warnings by the US Consulate in the past.

However, the warning follows spate of bombing attacks by ISIS and its affiliated groups in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and some other countries in the past few days.

Following combined clearance operations against Boko Haram terrorists from other parts of our neighbouring countries, escaping terrorists attempted an incursion into our troops position while in harbour at Kangarwa yesterday evening.

The troops dealt decisively with the fleeing terrorists and recovered arms and ammunitions from them in an encounter that lasted for about 3 hours.

Quite a number of the Boko Haram terrorists were killed, while several others escaped with gun shot wounds.
Unfortunately, 8 soldiers and 2 Civilian JTF were however wounded in action during the encounter. They have since been evacuated for proper medical attention. They are in stable condition and responding to treatment.

In addition, one of the troop’s Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle caught fire following a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) shot that affected the fuel tank and other electrical fittings. The troops however quickly put off the fire.

The gallant troops captured a number of motorcycles, 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 3 AK-47 Rifles, 6 Mortar Bombs, 4 Rocket Propelled Grenade Bombs, 3 Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Chargers, various types of ammunitions a 16/750 tyre and assorted types of drugs.

Politics / PHOTO: Ambode Inaugurates Advisory Council On Prerogative Of Mercy by olillywales(m): 6:22pm On Jun 30, 2016

In its bid to ensure justice for all and sundry, the Lagos State Government on Thursday inaugurated a nine-member Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem who spoke at the inauguration of the Council at the Conference Room of Ministry of Justice, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, said that the Council was derived from the Nigeria Constitution which provides for the constitution of an Advisory Council and grants the Governor powers to grant clemency to convicted persons on the advice of the Council.

Kazeem said: “Prerogative of Mercy is a right recognised under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended); Section 212(2) of the Constitution provides that the powers conferred on the Governor under Section 212(1) shall be exercised by him after consultation with the Advisory Council of the State on the Prerogative of Mercy as may be established by the Law of the State.”

He affirmed that the Governor has approved the constitution of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy in response to persistent request of the citizenry of the State, to grant pardon to inmates that have been reformed and ready for re-integration into the society.

The Attorney-General identified the objectives of the State’s justice system to include reform, rehabilitation and re-integration into society of offenders after serving due punishment, adding that members of the Council were appointed based on their individual track records and experience while membership cuts across key sectors of the society.

The new Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy members include Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, a legal practitioner as Chairman; Mrs. Tola Akinsanya, Director, Legislative Drafting, as Secretary; Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, Lagos Attorney-General; Mr. Olugbenga Oniyire, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch; Mrs. Bolatumi Animashaun, NBA Lagos Branch; Mr. Adedotun Adebayo Adetunji, NBA, Ikorodu Branch and Mr. Chris Okoye, NBA, Badagry; Mrs. Musili Onasanya, representative of the State Controller-General of Prisons and Sheikh Abdul-Rahman Ahmed, a clergyman.

He therefore implored members to work tirelessly to achieve the set objectives and most importantly ensure that the most deserving inmates are adequately re-integrated into the society.

The Chairman of the Council, Prof. Oyewo thanked the Governor for the appointment and opportunity to serve the State, promising that members will discharge their duties with probity and due process.
