Phones / NCC Forgives MTN, Lifts Sanctions by olillywales(m): 8:16pm On Mar 16, 2016
Mr Tony Ojobo, the Director, Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), said on Wednesday that the commission had lifted the sanction placed on MTN Nigeria since July 13, 2015.

Ojobo said in a statement that the regulatory sanctions were for 24 identified infractions.

It said that the lifting of the regulatory sanction was in no way related to the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card non-deactivation fine.

“This is to confirm that NCC has lifted the regulatory sanctions placed on MTN since July 13, 2015.

“The sanctions were for 24 identified infractions which are not in any way connected with the SIM card non-deactivation fine.

“These were a number of violations discovered by the Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Team of the commission in June 2015.

“Consequent upon the inability of MTN to remedy the identified infractions, the commission invoked the sanction in its guidelines,’’ the statement quoted Ojobo as saying.

It said that the sanction meant the denial of regulatory services to the telecommunications company for failing to remedy the infractions in line with NCC’s regulations.

According to the statement, consequent upon the remediation of the 24 infractions by MTN, the regulatory body’s letter of March 14, 2016, informed the company of its decision to lift the regulatory sanction.

“It should be noted that this does not in any way extend to the fine for non-deactivation of SIM card case.

“The case of SIM card deactivation is an entirely different infraction, which is mutually exclusive to the 24 infractions now remedied.

“This has become necessary in view of the many enquiries being received from concerned stakeholders.
“This action is without prejudice to the matter which is presently in court. Please be guided accordingly,’’ it quoted Ojobo as saying.

Politics / Over 680 Politicians Sue INEC - Chairman,yakubu by olillywales(m): 8:08pm On Mar 16, 2016
About 680 politicians dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission to court, immediately after the 2015 elections.

But a lot of the cases proved frivolous.

Prof. Mahmoud Yukubu, (INEC), disclosed at a forum in Abuja today that 580 of the cases were dismissed by the tribunals and Court of Appeal.

Yakubu however decried the cost of conducting re-run elections ordered by the courts.

Yukubu made this known at a National Conference for Justices of the Court of Appeal and Election Petition Tribunal Judges with the theme “2015 Election Petition Tribunals and Appeals” in Abuja.

He said it was more challenging to manage re-run elections arising from candidates’ disqualification.

According to him, while it is appreciated that the courts treat each case on its merits, certain trends point to conflicting judgments on similar cases by different Judicial Division of the Court of Appeal.

He said there were instances where elections were nullified and INEC was ordered to conduct a re-run simply for the sake of conducting elections in a specific polling unit.

Yakubu said after wasting time and resources, the outcome of such election did not make any material difference to the original result declared by INEC which made substantial compliance with the Electoral Act.

He cited the case of Lafia/Obi Federal Constituency in Nasarawa State, where Appeal Court ordered INEC to conduct a re-run in Angwan Doka Polling Unit 004 with just over 1,000 registered voters.

He said the candidate declared winner by INEC in the 2015 General election pooled over 74, 000 votes while the runner-up had a little over 70,000 votes.

Mahmoud said the number of registered voters in the polling unit could not have altered the result in any way and even the voters were aware of the reality.

“When INEC conducted a re-run election in that polling unit only 25 voters turned up to cast their votes and the election which has no utilitarian value cost the nation N3.2 million,” he said.

Yukubu said that the commission had no judicial powers over the outcome of the elections it had conducted.

According to him, each time an appeal court determines a case, the commission is always ordered to undertake one form of consequential action.

In her speech, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, said that the court received 749 appeals emanating from the decisions of the various election petition tribunals.

Bulkachuwa said in spite of the challenges of time, the justices of the court had managed to dispose the appeals within the stipulated period as required by law.

Crime / PHOTO: Nigerian Teenager Jailed For 37 Years Over American $40m Scam by olillywales(m): 7:55pm On Mar 16, 2016

Tobechukwu Igbokwe, a Nigerian teenager has been sentenced to 37years imprisonment for defrauding an American $40million in an inheritance scam.

Justice Lateef Lawal Akapo of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja passed the sentence today on the 19-year old secondary school leaver.

The convict was arraigned before the court on a 12- count charge of forgery, conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences.

Justice Akapo found him guilty on all 12-counts and sentenced him accordingly. He was sentenced to 7 years on counts 1-8; 8years on count 9; 7years on count 10, 8years on count 11 and 7 years on count 12, making a cumulative of 37years imprisonment.

The sentence is to run concurrently with effect from October 28, 2013, meaning he would spend just eight years behind the slammer. And since his sentence was backdated to 2013, Igbokwe only has a few years to spend.

The court also ordered Igbokwe to return the $40million as a restitution to the victim and forfeit a Toyota Corolla car, which is a proceed of the crime, to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Igbokwe was arraigned on 28 October 2013. He pleaded not guilty to the 12-count charge pressed against him. He later changed his plea to “guilty” and was convicted by Justice Akapo accordingly.

Before the conviction, the prosecuting counsel, Kayode Oni tendered various exhibits before the court which were all admitted and marked as such. However, defence counsel, D. A. Omougbai prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, since Igbokwe has shown enough remorse for the offences he committed.

Tobechukwu Igbokwe (Alias David Prince) and his accomplice, Ifeanyi Obi were alleged to have duped an American, M. Silva, the sum of $40million in an inheritance scam. Silva was made to believe that Igbokwe and his accomplice had a huge inheritance which they wanted to move to a foreign account for safe-keeping.

The victim was asked to send money to “process” the transfer and in the process, he wired $40m in several instalments through Western Union to Igbokwe.

Igbokwe also confessed that he had duped other foreigners. Some of them are: T. Bedwell, $6,000 and R. Hunt $15,000.

Crime / NDLEA Arrest 4 Nigerians, 4 Mexicans In A Drug Factory In Delta by olillywales(m): 5:33pm On Mar 12, 2016
Operatives of Nigeria’s anti-drug agency the NDLEA have stumbled on a giant methamphetamine laboratory that can produce $2 billion worth of the drug.
The laboratory was in Asaba, Delta state.

An NDLEA official in a meth lab

Eight persons, including four Nigerians and Mexicans were arrested with 1. 5 kilograms of the drug with street value of $ 1million .

One kilogram of Methamphetamine according to the NDLEA is valued at $600, 000 street price .

This super methamphetamine laboratory according to the NDLEA is similar to the ones found in Mexico with capacity to produce between 3,000 to 4, 000 kilograms in per production circles .

If the suspects had completed the production circle at the illicit factory in Asaba, the drug would have had street value of $2 billion.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah said the super laboratory was discovered by the special enforcement team of the agency.

He said the Nigerians arrested are believed to be joint owners of the laboratory and four Mexicans who are methamphetamine production experts hired as technical partners into the country.

The NDLEA boss gave the names of the suspects are Chief Chibi Aruh, William Ejike Agusi, Umolu Kosisochukwu and Umolu Ckukwemeka.

Others are Cervantos Madrid Jose Bruno, Rivas Ruiz Pastiano, Castillo Barraza Cristobal and Partida Gonzalez Pedro.

Abdallah described the operation as technical undercover assignment leading to the dismantling of a drug trafficking organization.

“A significant feature of this laboratory is that the production process is more technical and sophisticated because it uses the synthesis method of methamphetamine production.

All the principal actors linked to this illicit act were apprehended in a simultaneous raid on members of the drug syndicate in Lagos, Obosi in Anambra state and at the laboratory in Asaba, Delta state” Abdallah stated.

Celebrities / Please Pray For My Mum- Ibinabo Fiberesima's Son Writes Open Letter To Nigerians by olillywales(m): 4:54pm On Mar 12, 2016
Embattled Nigerian Actors Guild president,Ibinabo Fiberisima's son, Sean has written an open letter to Nigerians, begging them to pray for his mother ..This comes after the court of Appeal upheld her 5 year jail sentence leaving her with just one chance to appeal at the Supreme court .Sean a footballer wrote...

People of Nigeria,

This is Sean, first and proud son of Ibinabo Fiberesima, I write on here today to plead with all Nigerians to pray for my mother. She is going through the toughest of times right now, and so are we, her family. I've been reading heartbreaking comments on her matter that 'she thinks she's above the law', 'she doesn't feel sorry for the family of the deceased', 'she was drunk and deserves this punishment', let me get a few things straight with you now.My mother is the most humble woman I know, I was not aware she was a celebrity until I was about 14 and that's only because my uncle told me, she does not see herself or act as if she is above any other person.

She is a proud Nigerian who loves her country and its people.Secondly, she has been carrying heartbreak around with her for the past 11 years after the accident. She understands the pain for the deceased family and is very hurt about what happened herself. She has tried her utter most to console with the Family, so don't ever think she does not care.Thirdly she was not drunk, the charges are reckless and dangerous driving, first of all I refuse to believe my mother was driving recklessly or dangerous, as I've been in a car with her countless times and nothing has happened. On this occasion it was unfortunate, she was unlucky, her car flipped over which happens to a number of cars and another car smashed into her. She was in a comma for days, she could have easily lost her life, but thankfully, by Gods strength only she survived. She did not set out that day trying to kill someone or herself.

Right now my mother is broken, and needs the prayer and support of all Nigerians, so please put all your conspiracies about this matter aside, I know it's between her and God now.

Join us, myself, Craig her son who is 14, Malcolm and Brian her other sons and her beautiful Daughter Zino who is just 8, and the rest of her family, to pray for my Mother. Let God decide what is just and what is not.

Whatever your religion, join us and Pray for my mother as well as the family of the deceased. We can all get through this but not without God.

Thank you for reading, may God bless you all.

Politics / Thugs Beat Poll Official In Akwa-Ibom by olillywales(m): 4:31pm On Mar 12, 2016
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom, Mr Gabriel Ada, has alleged that suspected thugs snatched result sheet from an electoral officer in Saturday’s state assembly poll in the state.

Ada told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibesikpo while monitoring the election that the incident took place in one of the polling units in Obot Akara.

According to him, suspected thugs in Obot Akara beat up an electoral officer and took away the result sheet for the polling unit.

“We are still having pockets of violence in one or two places in Obot Akara but I think the security presence is good enough.

“In one of my polling units in Obot Akara, a staff was beaten and the result sheet was collected,’’ Ada said.

He disclosed that security personnel were adequately deployed for the re-run election and that their presence had accounted for relative peace during the exercise.

“Before this time, we had a lot of interactive meetings with political stakeholders, where they all resolved that the election will be peaceful,’’ he said.

Ada restated the commission’s commitment to free, fair and credible re-run, adding that most polling centres received voting materials quite early.

He said that he had not received any report of malfunctioning of the card reader, adding that he was impressed with the turnout of voters for the exercise.

“The card reader is function well and the verification of the PVCs, which it is doing, is very important to us.

“Once a voter is verified, we also cross check to ensure that your name is in the voters’ register and after that, you are given your ballot papers to cast your vote,’’ he said.

Politics / Fulani Herdsmen Attack Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti by olillywales(m): 10:44am On Mar 12, 2016
Authorities of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, on Friday raised concerns over alleged invasion and subsequent destruction of the institution’s farmlands by suspected herdsmen.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr Taiwo Akande, said at a pre- convocation news conference in Ado-Ekiti that the institution had lost several millions in monetary terms to the menace.

She called on the Federal Government to intervene in the crisis.

She added that the police and eminent Nigerians like Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) whose university is located directly opposite the polytechnic had intervened to stop further damage but to no avail.

“This menace of these herdsmen has been most destructive on many of our demonstration farms and pilot plantations.

“It is most painful to also disclose that some of the pilot farm projects, academic, research demonstration farms and recently established plantations on which we pinned our hope for future revenue enhancement have been destroyed one after the other by these people.

“They will bring their animals to the campus environment and eat up every green thing in sight,” she said.

According to her, this systematic destruction of the institution’s farms and project has been on for more than two years.

Akande also said another major problem confronting the polytechnic was the activities of land grabbers and illegal settlers.

The rector also listed continued dwindling resources arising from low funding by the Federal Government and poor patronage by the private sector in terms of endowment as part of current challenges of the polytechnic.

She appealed to the Federal Government to make polytechnic education more attractive to Nigerian admission seekers and sponsors alike by removing the age-long dichotomy between it and the university.

Crime / PHOTO:Malaysian court upturns death sentence handed to a Nigerian traffickker by olillywales(m): 1:41pm On Mar 08, 2016
A Malaysian Court of Appeal today March 8th upturned the death sentence handed down to a 31 year old Nigerian man identified as Abuchi Ngwoke, by a Malaysian High Court for trafficking 251.66 grammes of methamphetamine into Malaysia in May 2012.

The Malaysian High Court had sentenced Abuchi to death after he was arrested at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on May 23rd 2012 and taken to the Melaka General hospital where some precious stones he swallowed, tested positive for methamphetamine.

Abuchi through his counsel, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, had approached the Malaysian Appeal Court to appeal the High court's judgment, arguing that he never knew the precious stones which was handed to him by his Nigerian friend named Chibike in Nigeria was laced with 251.66 grammes of methamphetamine.

The Malaysian Court of Appeal ruled that there were merits on the issue raised by Abuchi's counsel. The judges then sentenced Abuchi to 20 years in jail and 10 strokes of whipping and ordered that his jail sentence should begin from the date of his arrest which was on May 23rd 2012.

Politics / PDP Scores Buhari, Ambode’s Below Average In Performance by olillywales(m): 9:51pm On Mar 04, 2016
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos state, Capt. Tunji Shelle, has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government has only fulfilled one campaign promise eight months after assumption of office.

He said the government was only focussed on fighting corruption when there is still corruption “at its backyard”.

Shelle said the country needed the PDP to arrest the current downturn of the economy.

Speaking while addressing members of the party during its General Assembly, the Chairman also said that the Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration in Lagos had only succeeded in adding to the fleet of BRT- mass transit buses since it assumed office.
“A new government came in May 2015 and up till now, nothing has happened. We have the history of stolen budget, missing budget, and padded budget. Is that what we are looking for? Is that the change we are looking for?

However, the Spokesman of the APC in Lagos state, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, however, said since there was no PDP in Lagos, Shelle was not competent to talk about Ambode’s administration.

Politics / PHOTO: Aisha Buhari Performs Naming Ceremony Of New NLNG Vessel In Korea by olillywales(m): 7:51am On Feb 27, 2016

Wife of the President of Nigeria, Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday performed the naming of a new vessel of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) in South Korea.

The vessel named ‘LNG Abuja 11’ is set to be the newest addition to the NLNG fleet, specifically for Bonny Gas Company (BGC), a subsidiary of the NLNG Ltd.

While performing the “naming ceremony” of the new vessel, Mrs. Buhari said that the acquisition of the new vessel was an additional impetus to the growth of export related businesses that will improve revenue generation for Nigeria, adding. “more than $10 million dollars was generated from the export of quality Nigerian materials to Korean shipyards”

According to Aisha Buhari expressed confidence that despite challenges in the global energy sector, Nigeria and south Korea will continue to occupy important positions with respect to international energy security and development.

She confessed that Nigeria is undergoing a process of change for improved quality of life of the people which has made it necessary for government to provide avenues for businesses to achieve their full potentials, adding: “I stand by this principle because that is how great countries like South Korea were built.”

The wife of President Buhari commended the NLNG for the new stride even as she said that there was nothing that made her proud than the knowledge that Nigerians and Nigerian companies actively participated and benefited directly from the construction of the new vessel.

The vessel was built by Samsung and Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea with Nigerians as part of the engineering team.

Nigeria produces 22 million tons of LNG per annum and sold to North America and Europe by ships.

Cameroon’s army killed 92 members of Islamist militant group Boko Haram and freed 850 villagers in a joint operation with Nigerian forces, the government of Cameroon said on Friday.

The operation in the Nigerian village of Kumshe, close to the border with Cameroon, was conducted under the auspices of a multinational force fighting Boko Haram, the statement from Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said.

“Two Cameroonian soldiers were killed (during the operation) by an accidental mine explosion. Five other soldiers were wounded,” Bakary said, adding that the army captured weapons and ammunition and found a centre for production of homemade mines.

Spokesman of the Nigerian army, Colonel Sani Usman confirmed the operation. He however did not give a toll of Boko Haram militants killed.

Usman said on Feb. 23, troops of 21 Brigade in conjunction with troops of MNJTF on clearance operations at Kumshe general area rescued 250 persons, mainly women and children.

Boko Haram seeking to carve out an emirate in northeastern Nigeria, has staged a campaign of suicide and other attacks in Cameroon, Chad and Niger over the past year, including killing as many as 1,000 in Cameroon.

The U.S. military calls Boko Harm the most violent extremist group in the world. The group gained global notoriety for kidnapping more than 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria in 2014 and is thought to have killed over 15,000 people over six years.

The Federal Government has confirmed the payment of N50 billion by MTN as part payment of the N1.04 trillion fine by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Confirming this to newsmen on Friday, the Special Assistant to the Minister of Communications, Mr. Victor Oluwadamilare, said the payment by telecom company was made with a precursor for an out of court settlement over the matter.

Oluwadamilare said the development was in line with the promise by MTN to amicably resolve the issue with NCC. The Nigerian telecom operator, MTN Nigeria had on Wednesday announced the payment of $250 million as part of the N1.04 trillion fine imposed on it by industry regulator.

MTN Group went to court to challenge the legality of NCC to impose such a huge fine on it but failed to argue its case to logical conclusion. After hearing the case, the presiding judge in January gave the two parties a two month period to settle out of court.

Politics / US To Send Special-op Troops To Nigeria by olillywales(m): 10:45pm On Feb 26, 2016
An indication that President Muhammadu Buhari’s travels were not a waste came today from the United States, where the Pentagon is considering sending military advisers to Nigeria to train local troops to fight Boko Haram insurgents.

A US defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity today, said the US military made a string of recommendations after Nigeria’s leader asked for help determining “possible courses of action” in the fight against the Islamist militants.

One recommendation was to send a group of US advisers — most likely special operations troops — to Nigeria to train local forces. They would not be in a combat role.

Such a mission would be a resumption of an earlier Pentagon effort that Nigeria stopped in late 2014 amid US concerns of suspected Nigerian army abuses and its failure to protect civilians, as well as strained diplomatic ties stemming in part from the US blocking of Nigerian efforts to buy Cobra attack helicopters.

The official said ties had improved under the new Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, who has vowed to do more than his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan to fight Boko Haram.

But the defense official downplayed the speed of any deployment, and said the operation was still being discussed.

“I don’t think anyone is ready to approve anything today,” the official said. “Recommendations were made, these are still being assessed.”

The US embassy in Nigeria said in 2014 that it regretted the end of the training program, which was offered following Boko Haram’s abduction of 276 schoolgirls in northeast Nigeria.

A number of foreign powers sent surveillance and intelligence specialists to Nigeria to help the military search for the 219 teenagers who are still being held.

US advisers and special operations troops are playing a growing role in the global fight against Islamist extremists, including in Iraq, Syria and Libya.

Celebrities / 10 Reasons Why Psquare Should Break Up - Metronaija.com by olillywales(m): 8:39am On Feb 20, 2016
Following the recent brouhaha in PSquare’s camp, one would not be too sure to say that the singers will remain formidable in the music industry for much longer.

It is speculated that the duo are likely going to break up sooner or later.

Here are some of the reasons why we think PSquare should break up.

1. People need to know everything about these twin brothers behind PSquare.

2. People need to know if they can put a face to their individual names both locally and internationally just like other music stars.

3. A breaking up would help ignite fresh ideas and style in their chosen career and help boost their personality in the industry (if they wish to continue with music).

4. Increase individual profits. It is said that competition is good for business. A public face-off between the brothers will help shoot up record sales and boost whatever personal involvements they have.

5. Just recently Peter recalled that they wanted to become professional footballers before they started music. If they breakup, there will be more room for a change of profession.

6. Create jobs. Peter and Paul own their personal record labels. Peter owns P-Classic records while Paul owns Rudeboy records. They would need to employ extra hands to help take care of certain studio works and aside that; they would also need to sign new artistes to their record label.

7. More experiences. They would gain more experiences when they share in other peoples struggle.

8. It is speculated that the voice in PSquare is Paul while the dance flows from Peter. A breakup would show who is who in PSquare.

9. PSquare has been together longer than other group singers that came up before and after them, like Plantanun boiz, KCPresh, and others. So, a little space wouldn't be so bad.

10. Breakup has been PSquare’s topic in the few times they’ve been on the news. Maybe it is actually what they want.

Politics / Nigeria Has The Fastest Growing Economy In Africa & The World - Buhari by olillywales(m): 2:11pm On Feb 19, 2016
President Buhari says Nigeria presently has the fastest growing economy in Africa and the world. Buhari said this at the public presentation of a book, ‘Nigerian Century’ written by Dare Babarinsa at Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, yesterday February 18th.

His speech was read by former governor of Ekiti State and deputy chairman of All Progressives Congress in the South, Segun Oni who represented him at the occasion.

"Yes, our land is blessed by providence with riches in oil and gas, iron ore, gold, limestone and almost all the minerals of this earth. Our soil can grow almost any crop and our vegetation supports animal life as varied as creation can manifest. Our rivers and coast lines are rich with fishes and various kinds of life. Yet, despite these bounties from nature, I have no doubt that the greatest blessings of Nigeria are the people of Nigeria, the wonderful people that give expression to the grandeur and majesty of our beloved country. Today, our country has the fastest growing economy in Africa and one of the fastest in the world. Our dominance is not so much because of our wealth, but because of the tremendous energy and resourcefulness of our people. How many countries of the world can parade the likes of Professor Wole Soyinka, Jay Jay Okocha, King Sunny Ade and Alhaji Aliko Dangote literally under the same roof?”he said

Business / Naira Slumps To Record Low Of N340 To USD1 Today by olillywales(m): 9:33pm On Feb 15, 2016
The Naira on Monday slumped further at the parallel market, NAN reports...

The Naira lost N5 to exchange at N340 to the dollar, a depreciation of 1.5 per cent.

The local currency last week fell from 310 to 338 as acute shortage of the dollar lingered as Nigerians scramble to get the greenback.

Meanwhile, the official Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rate remained at N197 to the dollar.

Traders at the market decried the increasing fall of the nation’s currency, pointing out that the market had remained dull as the scarcity of the dollar stifles economic activities.
