Celebrities / Mavin Singer, Di’ja Offers To Help Girl With Half-body by olillywales(m): 9:38am On Jan 05, 2016
Mavin Records singer Di’Ja has offered to help a disabled 19 year old young woman Rahma Haruna.

Rahma Haruna has taken over social media in Nigeria within the last couple of days. She lives with no functional arms and limbs. Rahma Haruna is carried around by her brother in a green plastic bowl. Thankfully a Good Samaritan donated a wheelchair to her.

Moved by her plight, Di’Ja asked for the details of Rahma Haruna today (January 4).

“Please dm me if u know how to contact this beautiful soul. (SERIOUS INFORMATION please in the name of God). Says she is 19 years old and no she wasn't born like this. She fell as a child. Her spirit alone shows strength and contentment. I am filled with gratitude, joy and love everyday because I am grateful. You should too...Allahu Akbar” she wrote.

Politics / 7 Reasons Why Nigeria Needs Oil Price To Rise by olillywales(m): 9:26am On Jan 05, 2016
Oil prices rose Monday on Middle East supply risks after Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran.

At about 1230 GMT, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in February climbed 30 cents to $37.34 a barrel.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, whose 13 members include Saudi and Iran, decided last month against cutting output levels despite a plunge in oil prices - in a bid to maintain market share faced with competition from North American shale oil output.

It is well known fact that oil is a far more complex commodity to analyse than any other, however,
www.metronaija.com put the following 7 reasons forward why Nigeria needs a rise in oil price.

These are:

1. Rising oil prices contribute to increased consumption whereas a decrease is devastating.

2. Because falling oil prices shrinks not only government’s purse but also those of its citizens, retail boom could be directly hit.

3. Because 75 percent of the Nigerian government’s revenue comes from taxes on the oil and gas sector.

4. Because oil and gas provide the critical source of Nigeria’s foreign exchange as it makes up more than 90 percent of exports, therefore a continuous drop will have an adverse effect on Nigeria’s foreign exchange.

5. Falling prices of oil would have an adverse effect on the value of Naira, which could scare foreign investors away.

6. Funds kept in Nigeria’s Excess Crude Account and other savings that the country uses to survive on rainy days are gotten from oil revenues. Government’s revenue is largely funded by oil, funds for its capital and recurrent spending is heavily reliant on the income from the oil, therefore fall in oil prices has greatly affected the country’s savings.

7. Nigeria may be forced into borrowing or cut back on spending, a potential catalyst for social unrest just so it can maintain its economy.

Politics / Reducing Fuel Price By 50 Kobo, Not Something To Cheer - PDP by olillywales(m): 7:25pm On Dec 30, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the ‘new’ pump prices of petrol as announced Tuesday by the Federal Government as a continuation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government by deception.

The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh on Wednesday said beside its deceptive element, the reduction in the N87 per litre pump price to N86 and N86.50 per litre for the retail outlets of the NNPC and retail outlets of private business concerns respectively offered too little to cheer.

fuel-pump“After heightened expectations occasioned by the promise to review the N87 per litre pump price of petrol made by the administration amid crippling scarcity of the product during the Christmas season, the announcement of this tokenism has come as a disappointing anti-climax, considering that only in January this year, the PDP Federal Government reduced the pump price from N97 to N87 per litre.

“That was done in the wake of the fall in the price of crude oil to between $42.65 and $50 per barrel. The PDP government then, in reaction to the development in the global oil market, revised its pricing template that brought down the pump price by N2.84 more than the N87 fixed as the pump price of petrol. The implication was that the Federal Government was still subsidising the N87 price by N2.84 per every litre of the product.

“The APC-controlled Federal Government, consequent upon stepping in the saddle on May 29, this year considered the market and decided through a supplementary appropriation to pay N413 billion as subsidy to petroleum marketers. In announcing the new pump prices, the APC Federal Government claimed that the subsidy element has been removed. The question is; how much were we paying for subsidy when the pump price was N87? Has this marginal reduction now knocked off completely the huge subsidy paid at N87 per litre or should it not have only further reduced the size of the subsidy?

“The APC government therefore must explain what it is trying to hide. The government could not have earmarked and/or paid a whopping N413billion in subsidy through its 2015 supplementary appropriation when petrol was selling at N87 per litre and now tells us that at N86 or N86.50 per litre, no subsidy will be paid. Is it trying to make the previous government look dubious or what? This government must explain its suspicious position on the subsidy issue. Nigerians can no longer put up with ambiguities and deception.

“Nigerians must question the sincerity of this government with regards to the removal of subsidy; Nigerians should ask President Buhari to tell them in clear terms, at what ceiling of crude oil price was subsidy no longer necessary: at N87 or this new price regime?

“For the records, we also wish to remind Nigerians of the insincerity of some members of the ruling APC on the fuel subsidy claim while in the opposition. For instance, when oil fell to $66 per barrel in December 2014, the current Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who was the governor of Lagos State then, said: ‘Now we should be enjoying cheap fuel if the price of oil has dropped globally.

“Even as we import the product, a major component has reduced in price and while this has reduced, the pump price of fuel in the country still remains virtually the same. Then something is wrong. If the price increases in the country when the price of oil goes up globally, then it should also reduce when the price of oil drops.’

“Similarly, when oil fell to $44 per barrel in January 2015, the current Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who was the spokesperson of the then opposition APC said; ‘When crude oil was selling at $100 per barrel, the landing cost of PMS without subsidy was N125 per litre. Now that the oil price has crashed to about $44 per barrel, landing cost without subsidy is about N65 per litre. The same goes for diesel which should not sell for more than 90 Naira per litre.’

“Lai Mohammed had said further, ‘Early this year, Zambia slashed the price of petrol by 23 per cent while Tanzania reduced the pump price of the product by 16%. In the U.S, which until recently was importing crude oil from Nigeria, the price of fuel has fallen for 113 consecutive days as of January 16. Therefore, the 10.3% price slash in Nigeria is too meager, too late.’

Nigerians should now ask them what has changed in their calculations that they could not significantly reduce the pump price.

As a party, the PDP insists that never again should Nigerians allow desperate men to use lies, propaganda and intimidations to win elections and get to power, only for them to fumble and muddle through governance.

Politics / I Am Not In Dubai To Plot Against Buhari- Atiku by olillywales(m): 9:40pm On Dec 27, 2015
This is a press statement from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar through Mazi Paul Ibe, the media Adviser to former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,

Former Vice President and chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) Atiku Abubakar advises political mischief makers to allow him enjoy his peace and desist from sinister propaganda designed to draw a wedge between him and President Muhammadu Buhari, in order to cause needless distrust and distractions in the President's government.

Reacting to insinuations by what he called "political mischief makers and enemies of unity", who alleges that he has been hosting political meetings at Burj Al-Arab, Dubai, the former Vice President says contrary to the rumours being bandied around by political opponents, he is currently in Dubai with his family for physiotherapy on his injured knee.

A press statement released by his media office in Abuja on Sunday, 27 December 2015 and signed by his Media Adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe says the former Vice President is embarrassed by the deliberate falsehoods being spread against him by political opponents who are bent on causing distraction for President Buhari at a time all energies should be channelled into helping the President actualise his change agenda.

Describing rumour mongers as "ill-motivated busybodies that don't wish the country well", the Turaki Adamawa explains that his medical treatment is his private affairs, which should not be politicised by anybody to achieve sinister objectives.

Atiku Abubakar says he is entitled to enjoy his private life, including the right to attend to his health, without being harassed and lied against by political opponents.

Contrary to the insinuations by political opponents, the former Vice President says the success of the Buhari administration has been his preoccupation, and that any true APC member should have the same zeal.

According to him, rumour mongers that seek to cause distrust and distraction in Buhari's government do not mean well for the APC administration.

The former Vice President says with the challenges of providing good governance for the country and creating job opportunities for Nigerians, including reducing the impact of poverty, President Buhari needs all the goodwill and support in this endeavour.

"Whether at home or abroad, the Turaki is preoccupied with his unassailable support to President Buhari and his administration, especially in this critical time, as it works assiduously to turn the fortunes of our dear country around and make Nigeria work for the greater good of Nigerians".

According to Atiku, rumour mongers and mischief makers are toxic to the progress of the APC and the country at large, adding that the campaigns are gone, and therefore, all energies should be constructively devoted to the success of the Buhari administration.

"This is yet another plot of the enemies of our country and democracy to divide, divert attention and distract the APC in its avowed commitment to secure the country, provide jobs for the mass of unemployed youths, build needed critical infrastructure, enthrone a regime of probity and accountability and pull the country out of the economic woods it has been consigned to by locust years of mismanagement."

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I want to begin by appreciating the Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation for its impact on the development of ideas through its annual lecture series. The fact that the themes of the lecture series have focused on critical puzzles bordering on human development lends credence and justification for the sustenance of the lecture series.

It is no doubt that an event like this demands a lot of sacrifice financially and otherwise. Apart from the contribution of the lecture series to human development, it has also unveiled the genius personality of Emmanuel Onyechere Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe, whose philosophical insight is gradually finding place in the psyche of academics globally, particularly at a time when Africans are determined to rewrite their own history.

The topic of discourse at this session, which is corruption, significantly ties into my vision for our great country, Nigeria, that we must kill corruption before corruption will kill us. My being here to deliver the keynote address at today’s session is instructive on the resolve of this government to interface with initiatives that are fundamentally patriotic and assisting in our path to socio-economic and political recovery.

In the last general elections, in the midst of a number of issues upon which we campaigned as a party, the one that gained higher currency in the psyche of our people was that Nigerians needed leadership that could be relied upon to tackle the orgy of corruption in the country.

While our programme of action identified corruption as a very dangerous challenge that must be curtailed if our country could ever generate a future of hope, the issues of collapsing educational system, diversification of our economy, fostering a welfare based agenda for the disadvantaged, infrastructural development, among others, were also very prominent in our campaign focus.

The primary attention that tackling corruption earned in the course of our campaign and in determining the final outcome of the election underpins how seriously Nigerians see corruption as a fundamental factor crippling the progress and development of the country. Nigerians are, indeed, convinced that except we curtail corruption, the country will remain in perennial regression.

It is upon this conviction of our people that corruption poses great danger and should be curtailed that we anchor our hope. It underpins our assurance that the efforts of this government in checking corruption will yield significant successes in the final outcome.

In other words, we note that sheer heroism cannot achieve the elimination of corruption from our social space. What is most required is the conviction of the populace that corruption is an antithesis to social cohesion and development, and must be eliminated. We must get to a point where every Nigerian begins to hate corruption with a passion, and collectively determine to root it out of our body polity.

Any effort to try to deal with corruption without a convinced populace will end as spasmodic, ephemeral exercise, lacking the appropriate social impact. When we are talking about corruption conventionally, it is a manifestation of the human mindset. It is the human beings that manifest corruption.

To win the war on corruption, therefore, begins with the people accepting that there is an error to be corrected in their lives, that there is a need to refocus and re-orientate the values that we cherish and hold dear. It requires change of mindset, change of attitude, and change of conduct.

The decision of the Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation to choose corruption as the topic of discourse at this session is, therefore, encouraging to this government, pursuant to our vision that winning the war against corruption requires our synergy, a collectivisation of our resolve that corruption must be eliminated in the social psyche of the Nigerian nation.

Even in my earlier years in service to our country, I had personally identified the destructive impact of corruption. Taken from the narrow perspective of the embezzlement of public funds, its social consequence of gross economic inequality alters the basis for social peace and security.

When given the opportunity to play a leading role in our national history in 1984, we acknowledged that corruption is not just about the embezzlement of public funds but that the perversion of our consciousness and mindset was the point at stake. This was the basis of our WAR AGAINST INDISCIPLINE (WAI) – Indiscipline in any way and manner is a form of corruption of the human essence. That was why we waged campaigns against indiscipline, and its many manifestations in the 1980’s during my tenure as Head of State of our great Nation.

Sadly in this season, we find ourselves in a Nigeria where indiscipline has been taken to an unprecedented level. Th rule of law is grossly perverted, and corruption has been elevated to a way of life at all strata of the society. In striving to reorder our country and put it on the path of recovery, we have thus identified the need to tackle corruption head-on. In this regard, we have taken steps towards recovering a reasonable amount of the money that was looted or misappropriated from public coffers. Investigations are ongoing on public officers who served, or are still serving, and those whose conduct are questionable will be compelled to accept the path of honour and surrender their loots.

As I stated recently, a good number of people who abused their positions are voluntarily returning the illicit funds. I have heard it said that we should disclose the names of the people, and the amount returned. Yes, in due course, the Central Bank of Nigeria will make information available to the public on the surrendered funds, but I must remark that it is yet early days, and any disclosure now may jeopardize the possibility of bigger recoveries. But we owe Nigerians adequate information, and it shall come in due course. It is part of the collective effort to change our land from the bastion of corruption it currently is, to a place of probity and transparency.

Quite frankly, the anti-corruption war is not strictly about me as a person, it is about building a country where our children, and the forthcoming generations, can live in peace and prosperity. When you see dilapidated infrastructure round the country, it is often the consequence of corruption. Poor healthcare, collapsed education, lack of public utilities, decayed social services, are all products of corruption, as those entrusted with public resources put them in their private pockets. That must stop, if we want a new Nigeria. And that was why I said at another forum that people need not fear me, but they must fear the consequences of their actions. Corrupt acts will always be punished, and there will be no friend, no foe. We will strive to do what is fair and just at all times, but people who refuse to embrace probity should have every cause to fear.

Look at the corruption problem in the country, and tell me how you feel as a Nigerian. Our commonwealth is entrusted to leaders at different levels of governance, and instead of using the God given resources to better the lot of the citizens, they divert them to private use. They then amass wealth in billions and trillions of naira, and other major currencies of the world, ill gotten wealth which they cannot finish spending in several lifetimes over. This is abuse of trust, pure and simple. When you hold public office, you do it in trust for the people. When you, therefore, use it to serve self, you have betrayed the people who entrusted that office to you.

Again, how do you feel year after year, when Transparency International (TI) releases its Corruption Perception Index, and Nigeria is cast in the role of a superstar on corruption? In 2011, out of 183 countries, Nigeria was 143 on the corruption ladder. In 2012, we were 139th out of 176. In 2013, we ranked 144 out of 177, and in 2014, we stood at 136th out of 174. Hardly a record to inspire anyone. In fact, it is sad, depressing and distressing. Our country can be known for better things other than corruption.

In the process of trying to recover stolen funds now, we are seeking the cooperation of the countries were these loots were taken. Time it was, when such nations may have overlooked our overtures for assistance to fight corruption. However, we now live in an era where corruption is anathema, looked upon as something that should be tackled head-on because the actions of the corrupt can have global impact.

It is to be noted that resolving the problem of corruption transcends merely arresting and trying people that have held public office. This is because, to curtail corruption, we have to reorder the mindset of all. Empirical facts have shown that even those who are critics today are most times not better than those they criticize. When they are availed the same or similar opportunities, they act likewise. In other words, those who didn’t have the opportunity criticise and blow whistle but when they get into office; they become victims of the same thing they criticize. Nigeria must grow beyond that point, and be populated by people with conviction, a new breed without greed, radically opposed to corruption.

This points to the fact that curtailing corruption might require a more broadened social engineering. It, indeed, requires conforming every mindset in the social order to the moral tenets in which propriety anchors as a way of life.

That was why in the earlier dispensation, we saw corruption beyond the embezzlement of public funds. We knew that a morally upright personality, a disciplined person, will not embezzle people’s money or betray the confidence reposed in him after being elected or appointed to manage any office.
We knew that due to the perversion of our mindsets, people would rather abandon pedestrian bridges and flyovers and run through the traffic in very busy highways. We understood the economic and social worth of every Nigerian and the need to preserve their lives; we tried to enforce compliance with commuters using the pedestrian bridges provided for their safety. We even went as far as enforcing the discipline of queuing to board buses and not the chaos of scrambling with its attendant dangers. The people saw where we were headed, and cooperated with us.

That effort of the past was under a military regime, a dictatorship as it is classified. Now we are under a democracy. The democratic system has its benefit in the rule of law and the fact that a man cannot be assumed guilty until it is so determined by the court of law.

With the rule of law and its advantages, the same could however pose as serious limitations to curtailing corruption when the legal system is not adequately reinforced. The onus, therefore, is on those who run our legal process to ensure that the corrupt does not go free through exploiting the weakness and lacuna in the system.

I agree with Anyiam-Osigwe that corruption is an attitude and it is about the wrong attitude. The problem with tackling corruption is that when people have become used to a particular way of doing things, even if it is not the proper way, they find it difficult to change.

We all know that to lie is not good. But we have a sense of justification each time we tell lies. This sense of justification encourages us always to do the wrong thing. It is in this context that the mindset becomes an issue. There is the need to bring back our minds to the pure state of the human identity.
While changing the mindset of the people is integral to dealing with the manifestation of corruption socially, it is also important to heal the wounds inflicted by the corruptive indulgence of specific people who have been entrusted with public positions or funds.

Thus, it is the responsibility of government to investigate reported cases of corruption. In the process, suspected culprits could be arrested, detained or questioned. All these efforts would eventually end up with prosecuting the case in court. A government that closes its eyes to brazen corruption loses its essence, the very reason of its existence. Such a government is sheer flippancy, a waste of time, moral and sociological absurdity.

In Nigeria, it needs be said that two problems stare us in the face. First is that our laws need to be strengthened if we must realistically contend with the miasma of corruption. The second is that we must correct the gaps in our legal system that are exploited to frustrate the process of justice. A number of anti-corruption cases have been rendered inconclusive due to legal limitations.

Dealing with corruption, requires the collective will of every Nigerian. Without our collective will to resist corrupt acts as a people, it will be difficult to win the war. We in the leadership will provide the right example. We will not pay mere lip service to corruption. We will eschew it in every aspect of our lives.

However, we are but few, in a country of more than 170 million people. We need the mass army of Nigerians to rise as one man, and stand for probity in both public and private lives. It is only then that we can be sure of dealing a mortal blow on corruption, which will engender a better country.
Nigeria has been brought almost to her knees by decades of corruption and mismanagement of the public treasury.

We must come to a point when we all collectively say Enough! That is collective will, and that is what will bring us to a new state and status. If this country will realize her potentials, and take her rightful place in the comity of nations, we must collectively repudiate corruption, and fight it to a standstill. It remains eternally true: if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria.

Politics / Appeal Court Declares Senator Kashamu As Winner Of Ogun East Senatorial Election by olillywales(m): 6:35pm On Dec 07, 2015

Controversial Senator, Buruji Kashamu, has floored his opponent in the 2015 general election, Dapo Abiodun, at the Court of Appeal.
The Court, which sat in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, ruled on Monday that Kashamu is the validly elected representative of Ogun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

Kashamu had headed to the Court, which is the court of last jurisdiction for senatorial election, after the Ogun State Elections Petitions Tribunal ruled in favour of Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress.

The Tribunal had nullified the election of Kashamu, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, and ordered the conduct of fresh election in 109 wards to determine the actual winner of the seat.
Kashamu, however, headed to the Court of Appeal.

In the course of the hearing, the Court of Appeal panel was disbanded over a controversial N150 million bribe allegedly given to the judges by Kashamu.

It was the new panel that gave Kashamu the victory on Monday.

Politics / Fire Razes 118 Shops In Kabong Market, Jos by olillywales(m): 9:30pm On Nov 26, 2015
A raging night inferno razed 118 shops at the Kabong market in Jos North on Thursday morning, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

A correspondent of NAN, who visited the market, could not access the burnt section as some shops were still in flames.

Others also had thick smoke billowing from them, making visibility very difficult.

The actual cause of the fire could not be ascertained, but Mr Christopher Jama, Chairman, Kabong Market Traders Association, who briefed the governor– when he visited the scene– said the fire started by 4:00am.

Jama claimed that the fire was caused by an electrical spark when public power supply was restored in the night.

He told Gov. Simon Lalong that 118 shops were completely burnt, and noted that goods destroyed included bags of maize, beans, rice, and poultry products.

He appealed to the governor to come to the aid of the affected traders ‘whose means of livelihood had been destroyed’.

Lalong, who expressed “deep shock” at the development, promised to remodel the market and also address the traders plight.

Politics / Unemployment Is Responsible For Pro-biafra Protests - Senator by olillywales(m): 4:42pm On Nov 23, 2015
Senator Athan N. Achonu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) representing Imo North, has attributed the on-going agitation for the realization of Biafran state as a result of unemployment among the youths which is worsening economic situation in the country.

The senator, who spoke over the weekend also urged the Federal Government to tackle unemployment rather than the promised N5,000 monthly stipend, stressing that such palliative was not the solution to economic problems neither was it feasible considering the huge number.

He stressed that if the people, especially youths were gainfully employed, they would not have resorted to street protest.

“ If these men agitating for the state of Biafra are gainfully employed, they will not be in the streets protesting. There is hunger in the land and the government should do all it can to address the socio-economic challenges confronting the nation”, Achonu stated.
He continued: “ Only a few people are making a living.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed says the Federal government is not about to regulate or stultify the Nigerian Social Media. He said this at a meeting with bloggers at Zen Garden Chinese restaurant Ikeja, Lagos today November 23rd. More photos from the meeting after the cut..

"There is enormous power in your fingertips, and no one can ignore you. Such is the prodigious power in your hands that it becomes imperative for you Nigerian bloggers to allow some measure of responsibility and restraint in exercising such power. Herein lies the challenge: Power without control is a recipe for disaster!. What I am saying in essence is that you must self-regulate in order not to self-destruct. Self-regulation allows you Nigerian bloggers to weed out the charlatans among you in order to maintain your credibility and ensure your survival. Lose credibility and lose it all. That is the stark reality. If you must survive and grow, you must not compromise your credibility. Let me assure you that the Federal Government does not intend to stifle free speech or abridge the rights of Nigerians to air their views freely. We are not about to regulate or stultify the Social Media. This explains why we are asking you Nigerian Bloggers to self-regulate. That is why we are encouraging yoo the Nigerian bloggers‬ to rein in the impostors among you and show restraint when dealing with issues of national unity, issues of Nigeria's sovereignty, as well as issues concerning the lives and well-being of Nigerians"he said

Politics / Barcelona Police Arrest 21 Nigerians by olillywales(m): 3:20pm On Nov 22, 2015

On Monday, Nov. 16, Catalan regional police launched a large-scale raid against human trafficking and sexual exploitation of women in Barcelona, Spain. 21 people, 15 men and 6 women, tall Nigerians, were arrested in the early morning operation for forcing Nigerian women into prostitution. Above is one of the arrested Nigerians

The Central Unit against Human Trafficking disclosed that the suspects are part of a criminal organisation, known as "Supreme Eiye Confraternity", that has forced more than one hundred women into prostitution since the beginning of 2014.

Investigators believe the group may have exploited dozens of women, many of whom were charged large sum of money to be brought to Spain from Africa with the promise of a job and a better life. The women, instead were forced into prostitution to repay their debts to the human trafficking ring.

The group was born in university circles in Nigeria in the 90s, and gradually became a feared criminal organisation, El País newspaper reports. "We have taken action against the local branch of this organisation, but also against some international members here." a police spokesman added.

Officers are also searching 20 properties in Barcelona, Terrassa, Sabadell and several other Catalan towns and cities. According to El Pais, this is not the first time that the Catalan police have acted against the Supreme Eiye Confraternity. In November 2011, several members were arrested on similar charges. :
