Politics / PHOTOS: Troops Clear Boko Haram Terrorists In Ngoshe And Gava by olillywales(m): 8:48am On Jun 29, 2016
Tuesday 28th June 2016, troops of 121 Task Force Battalion, 26 Task Force Brigade, accompanied by a large number of Civilian JTF from Gwoza, embarked on a very aggressive patrol that dislodged remnants Boko Haram terrorists hibernating at Ngoshe and Gava villages, located close to Gwoza on the mountainous terrain.

The essence of the robust patrol which was supported by the Nigeria Air Force and Cameroonian Defence Forces who provided air cover and real time Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, was to clear the remnants of the terrorists hiding in the mountainous area and rescue all persons held hostages by the Boko Haram terrorists.

While advancing towards their objective in Ngoshe, the patrol team encountered Boko Haram terrorists. They have to clear the delay positions staged by the terrorists through the support of the Nigeria Air Force fighter jets.

Although the number of terrorists killed could not be ascertained, quite a number of them where seen falling over the mountains when engaged. It is equally believed several others escaped with gun shot wounds.

The troops were however able to recover quite a number of arms and ammunitions. These include; 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) tube, 4 RPG Bombs, 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1 Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle and 3 AK-47 rifles.

Other items recovered include 1 Sub-Machine Gun(SMG), 1 Locally made Pistol, a locally made Double-Barrel gun, 1 Smoke Grenade, 243 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 1 round of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.

They also recovered 18 rounds of MI16 rifle, 3 G3 Rifle magazines, 2 AK-47 magazines, 1 mobile telephone handset and a SIM card, as well as a pair of military desert camouflage uniform.

Other items were an address card, 3 Boko Haram terrorists flags and a Toyota Hilux vehicle painted in desert camouflage colour and motorcycles.

The troops did not find any hostage in Gava. However, they rescued 16 civilians held in Ngoshe prison, while many residents of the town saw it as an opportunity to flee from the town. Both the rescued and freed persons are being profiled by the troops.

Crime / PHOTOS: RRS Arrests Three 'one Chance' Gangs In Lagos by olillywales(m): 3:35pm On Jun 26, 2016
One of the six suspects, of three different 'One-Chance' gangs, arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command on Sunday has disclosed that the prevailing economic situation in the country has greatly affected one chance robbery operations.

The suspect, Adeleke Rasaq, 24, was arrested along with his gang member, Lucky John, 22, in Abule Egba, Agbado-Oke Local Council Development Area.

Adeleke, who resigned as a factory worker to join one-chance robbery gang, stated “we don’t make much money like before. The present economic condition in the country has greatly affected one-chance business. We have not been able to make much money, everywhere is dry."

The suspect added that "Frankly, we have not made much money since Monday. We have been sharing N20,000, N30,000 and N40,000. Unlike before, when I operate alone, I could make close to N150,000 daily. Now, business is so difficult."

He continued that, "I teamed up with Lucky because pickpocketing is not easy in Lagos these days. When you toil alone, you might not make much. It has not been easy working independently lately. So, we have to team up to make more money to survive... Both of us live in Badagry. Everyday, we come to Abule Egba, Agege, Fagba, Egbeda to operate. As soon as we made enough money, we would retire for the day."

Explaining how he joined the robbery syndicate, he revealed, “I resigned from the company I worked for when I noticed that a lot of my friends in Ajegunle, who were doing this kind of hustling were living better than a lot of Chief Executives. Every guy does this in Ajegunle. We don’t see it as a crime, it is called hustling."

The suspect also stated that, "I started following them out. It was in the process that I mastered the act. It has been up to six years that I have been in this trade.”

Members of the second gang, comprising Ubuke Michael, 26 and Obinna Okoro, 24, were arrested in Gbagada after their operational bus with the registration number "FST 890 XM" had picked up two passengers who were going to Alaba International Market and Ladipo Spare Part Market to buy goods.

Ubuke, the leader of the gang, had invited a bus driver and a conductor to join his group in one-chance operation. Ubuke insisted “I invited a friend of mine who has a commercial bus. He and his conductor are familiar with the operation. I have so many commercial buses that I can call for operation. I call them to join me at a particular location."

Ubuke also stated that, "The driver and conductor do their normal work while we collect belongings of the passengers, drop them off and pass them to the driver to hold on. The two passengers in the bus were our victims. One of them came out of bank before boarding our bus, while another has bulky pockets. We were about to collect their belongings when we were arrested. We don’t normally carry more than two passengers during operations. Whatever we make we share with the driver and the conductor; but our share is normally more than theirs. It is so unfortunate the driver and conductor of our operational danfo bus escaped.”

One of their victims, Boniface Anusionwu, whose phone was found with the gang stated: “I just came out of a bank where I went to withdraw some money for trading and for my rent. I never knew they were robbers.”

The last gang members , Steven Raphael, 25 and Samali Onafuwa, 27 were arrested in Fagba and Station Bus Stop, Ishaga.

Confirming the incident, the Police PPRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, said that there would be no hiding place for criminals in Lagos State, adding that the suspects would be charge to court when investigations are completed. Sadly, all the suspects have roots in Ajegunle.

The six suspects had been transferred to SCID for further investigation.

Politics / Army Intercepts Boko Haram Families by olillywales(m): 1:07pm On Jun 22, 2016
Today, in the early hours troops of 81 Battalion and 251 Task Force Battalion deployed at an Observation Post sighted a group of persons approaching its Check Point at Liwanti village along Damboa-Bulabulin road, Borno State. On arrival, they were received and treated humanely based on International Humanitarian Laws and Rules of Engagement.

On preliminary investigation, it was discovered that the 69 of them were indeed family members of Boko Haram terrorists escaping from Sambisa. Out of that number, 7 of them are men, 18 women, 7 grown up boys and 37 children.

At the initial state of interrogation, they claimed to have escaped from Boko Haram terrorists captivity at Ngwalimari village in Sambisa forest general area. But further interrogation revealed otherwise.

The troops recovered 15 bicycles, 5 Dane Guns and other personal effects from them. Further and thorough investigation is ongoing to ascertain other information from them.

Politics / Ondo Traditional Rulers Appeal To Workers Over Strike by olillywales(m): 2:08pm On Jun 20, 2016
Traditional rulers in Ondo State, on yesterday, appealed to the workers’ union in the state to suspend their two weeks strike embarked upon by the workers over the non payment of their six months’ salary.

The monarchs, who made this call at the end of their monthly meeting held at the palace of Oloba of Oba Ile, in Akure North Local Government, called on the state government to resume negotiation with the striking workers in the interest of development and the people of the state.

The traditional rulers, under the auspices of 130 Crown Club, noted the economic hardship in the country and urged the state government to dialogue with the leadership of the workers union in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Oniyere of Iyere in Owo Local Government, Oba Omotunde Alaba, expressed displeasure over the protracted strike action over the unpaid wages for civil servants.

The monarch said “on behalf of the 130 Crown Club of Ondo State, as partner in governance, we want to use our monthly meeting at Oba-Ile North Local Government to appeal to NLC and TUC to please manage the situation for now and return back to work.

“The hardship is becoming too much for the citizens of Ondo State and for the economic development of the state. They should dialogue more with the state government and please go back to work

“We pray that the good time would come again and the people would enjoy the government.”

The monarchs also asked the government to eradicate Grade D for all traditional seats in the state and also called on the government to alleviate their suffering by paying their entitlements and upgrading them to the desired status befitting their position in the society.

His words “we are being shortchanged. We need our entitlements. We want the eradication of Grade D status in the kingship rank in the state. It is only in Ondo State that we have grade D. Other states in the country now have Grade A to C.”

Culture / Yoruba Are Genetically 99.9 Percent Igbo- Study by olillywales(m): 12:56pm On Jun 18, 2016
I know alot Yorubas will not agree with this study.

Read below

Four of the major coastal tribes of Western Africa: the Yoruba, Igbo, Akan and the Gaa-Adangbe are dissimilar at a glance and evidently geographic neighbours, but very closely related, if examined in detail at the genetic level.

Several studies have been employed over the years, with findings bringing up linkages of genetic similarity between differing regional ethnic groups. One in particular, conducted by Adebowale Adeyemo, Guanjie Chen, Yuanxiu Chen, the National Human Genome Centre and Howard University, and Charles Rotimi of the University of Ibadan provided results indicating the genetic similarities between the four major West African ethnic groups.

Their findings further indicated surprising genetic variance within groups, but almost none across groups, similar to the closeness of human genetics across races, showing more range within than without.

According to this landmark study there was 99.9 percent within-population variance, the between-population variance was less than 0.1 percent. This means that Yorubas, Igbos, Gaa and Akan are 99.9 percent similar, while within each of the groups there are variations/differences between individuals as high as 99 percent i.e. One Igbo may be 99 percent genetically different from another Igbo, or one Yoruba person to another.

It is important to remember that these groups were not initially split by national borders; prior to the European division of the continent, these ethnic peoples traded, migrated and wedded as the times permitted, allowing apparent regional and national mixtures that remain evident in modern day genetic analyses of some Yoruba and Igbo individuals.

Race and ethnicity are considered to be related concepts. Ethnicity is often assumed to be somewhat more of a cultural identity of a group, often based on shared ancestry, language and cultural tradition, while race is assumed to be strictly a biological classification, based on genetic materials and bone structure. Ethnicity is often used synonymously with ambiguous terms such as nation or people, depending on which source of group identity is emphasized to define membership, the following types of (often mutually overlapping) groups are:

Ethno-linguistic, emphasizing shared language, dialect or script — example: Hausa.
Ethno-national, emphasizing a shared polity or sense of national identity — example: Nigerian.
Ethno-racial, emphasizing shared physical appearance based on genetic origins — example: African-American.
Ethno-regional, emphasizing a distinct local sense of belonging stemming from relative geographic isolation — example: South Islanders.
Ethno-religious, emphasizing shared affiliation with a particular religion, denomination or sect — example: Christians.

Also worthy of note is the shared Volta-Niger root languages, Yoruba and Igbo languages belong to the same family (YEAI branch), showing the common start of the diverse languages spoken by these ethnicities.

Consequently, barring the inclusion of culture, tribal affiliation and nationality, it could be said that the the Yorubas, the Igbos, the Akans and the Gaa-Adangbes are but a people spread over a wide area with different ways of life. Thus discrediting any claim of a unique Yoruba “race” or a genetically insured Igbo ethnicity often employed by politicians and traditional rulers in rhetorics and propaganda messages.

The reality, however, is the hampered economic strength of a not truly united front, with success delayed continually by the lack of pan-African sentiments on the part of the leadership, and poor economic decisions taken in an imperialist system. This is not to revile the revered skin deep differences in each group’s cultural development, but serves to indicate and rejoice in the underlying sameness of what appears ‘not’ to be.

A body does not fight itself. These kinds of research serve as a balm to the much divided heart of the ethnically-concerned West African, and to the African at large: one root, many branches; united by blood if not spirit.
