Politics / 'I Regret Making Many Unforced Errors On Nigeria'- British Pm,cameron by olillywales(m): 11:37am On May 14, 2016
British Prime Minister David Cameron has admitted making many “unforced errors” in the last 24 hours.

Speaking when he appeared before the House of Commons, which summoned him over disparaging comments about Nigeria and Afghanistan, Cameron made a U-turn, saying both countries were making “remarkable steps forward” in their war against anti-corruption.

He said: “First of all, I had better check the microphone is on before speaking… tips on diplomacy are useful, given the last 24 hours, I have made many unforced errors.

“The leaders of Nigeria and Afghanistan are battling hard against very corrupt systems and have made remarkable steps forward.”

Angus Robertson, Scottish National Party leader, was said to have asked Cameron if he had heard the complaints of some Nigerian anti-corruption activists, who said their efforts were “seriously undermined” by the UK authorities.

“The role of London’s property market to conceal stolen wealth has been exposed in court documents, reports, documentaries and more.

“What is the Prime Minister going to do about this?” Robertson reportedly asked.

In his response, Cameron was quoted as saying: “Action is necessary by developed countries, as well as developing countries, and the steps we are taking to make sure that foreign companies that own UK property have to declare who the beneficial owner is will be one of the ways we make sure that plundered money from African countries can’t be hidden in London.”

Cameron had come under fire since the video of a private conversation he had with the Queen, with Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, in attendance, where he referred to Nigeria and Afghanistan as “fantastically corrupt countries,” a remark that did not go down well with Welby, who vouched for the integrity of the Nigerian leader, with whom he met yesterday at Lambert Palace, London.

Politics / London APC Blasts David Cameron by olillywales(m): 4:07pm On May 11, 2016
The London branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has also issued a statement condemning British Prime Minister David Cameron's recent comments terming Nigeria a "fantastically corrupt" nation.

Signed by the APC London Press Secretary, Adenike Lucas, the statement said President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to rooting out corruption in the nation.

“The rash statement by the Prime Minister and leader of the conservatives, David Cameron, earlier today fails to credit President Muhammadu Buhari’s effort in fighting corruption," it said.

“President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR who should arrive in the UK shortly for the anti-corruption summit hosted by David Cameron has received commendation from the Prime Minister in the past and other world leaders over his stance against corruption.

“During the 2015 Election campaign, PMB as he is fondly known pledged to fight corruption and he has not reneged on his promise.

“It should be noted that within a year of being sworn-in, President Buhari has achieved a lot in his fight against corruption in Nigeria.

“President Buhari is known for his zero tolerance against corruption. He has made major efforts to change the image of the nation within and outside the country; and this government’s policies are working. In the recent list of the top 10 most corrupt countries released, Nigeria was not on the list.

“Even while the Prime Minister made the comment about Nigeria being one of the “fantastically corrupt Countries”, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby quickly corrected him and acknowledged in the presence of the Queen of England that President Buhari “is actually not corrupt and he is doing a great job in Nigeria”.

“Nigeria and indeed the world are aware the new sheriff in town is working to tackle corruption unlike the previous government which allowed corruption to thrive.

“The APC-led government has empowered the anti-corruption agency (EFCC) resulting in several high profile investigations and prosecution of individuals involved in corruption and misappropriation of funds. This is an ongoing process that includes blocking leakages, sensitising the system, re-training of stakeholders amongst other measures put in place to curb corruption.

It is crystal clear to all that President Buhari is determined to root out corruption from the system.

“APC UK and Nigerians in the Diaspora have confidence in the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and believes that the current administration is moving Nigeria forward, away from the rot and decay suffered under the previous administration," it added.

Crime / Fake Town Planner Arrested In Lagos by olillywales(m): 7:58pm On May 09, 2016
Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on Monday apprehended a middle-aged man, Adeyemi Adebayo who specialized in serving fake demolition notices and stop-work orders on buildings under construction in exchange for inducement.

Adebayo, who claimed to hail from Osun State and reside in Anuoluwapo area of Ilogbo in Ogun State, was said to have been apprehended after serving demolition notice on a building under construction in Lagos State.

The workers on sight of the building had alerted the officials of the Ministry shortly after Adebayo served the demolition notice, after which the suspect was caught with four fake identity cards of the Lagos State Government.

While being interrogated by newsmen, the suspect said he was employed as a project staff by the Lagos State Ministry of The Environment about eight years ago, but was laid off without any benefit four years after.

The suspect, who claimed to be married but divorced, added that ever since being laid off, he had been working with his friend’s junior brother.

He said: “I have worked in the various sectors in the Ministry of The Environment. We are project staff and we worked there for good eight years. I was relieved of my job about four years ago. We came in and we worked in various areas and we are being told to go for staff audit. They just laid us off without any benefit and they did not collect their identity cards from us.

“The only thing I have to say is that when someone worked for government, they should at least recognize the efforts of such person. You cannot just lay off people like that without anything. We all know the situation of the country. I know I don’t have the authority to do what I have been doing but I have been known with the Ministry of Environment,” the suspect narrated.

Briefing newsmen on how the suspect was apprehended, spokesperson of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Adeshina Odunuga said Adebayo had been going about impersonating as a Town Planner with the Ministry before he was caught on the fateful day.

Odunuga said: “This is a gentle man that was arrested while he was impersonating as an officer of the Ministry. He goes about to mark buildings, serve demolition notices, serve stop-work orders and collect money and other form of inducement in exchange for that. Sometimes he goes about serving demolition notices and threatening owners of buildings all around. He was arrested by officials of the Ministry who got to a site and was told one of them has just left. He was called back and that was how he was arrested.”

The suspect has since been handed over to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Nigerian police for further investigation.

Politics / Femi Falana On Channels TV Today: 7 Points He Made by olillywales(m): 2:09pm On May 09, 2016
Top human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has once again vented his frustration with the sorry state of the nation, especially concerning the spate of insecurity sweeping across different regions.

Below are the 7 salient points from Falana’s explosive interview on Channels television on Monday, May 09, 2016.

Inspector General of Police is incompetent: Femi Falana accused the IGP, Solomon Arase of incompetence on the handling of the Fulani herdsmen. He said it left much to be desired that the IGP had to wait for a presidential order before taking action after scores of local residents were killed in the recent Fulani herdsmen attack in Ukpabi Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu state.

The Police is understaffed: He also opined that the Nigeria Police lacked the capacity to effectively police 170million people with just 130,000 men.

162 police officers guarding a governor is too much: According to Falana, Nigeria “used to have 300 policemen guarding a Governor, now Police assigns about 162 officers to guard each State Governor”. For a police that is already understaffed, that figure is still too much.

Ex-commissioner of police, Enugu, Nwodibo Ekechukwu deserves some punishment: He said that the transfer of the ex-police boss in the state is not enough as the community had alerted the governor who then alerted the commissioner of police but failed to take actions. He further said that all heads of security agencies- commissioner of police, Director of state security service and Army commander in Enugu were guilty of security negligence and should be dealt with accordingly.

The Police constantly engages in extra judicial killings: Femi Falana alleged that the police was regularly engaged in outright killings of armed robbery and kidnap suspects after parading them to the media. He said, “What happens to armed robbery suspect and kidnap suspects after the parade? They are simply extra judicially executed. I go to court regularly; I cannot remember when last armed robberies were brought to court. In 2014, 532 armed robbery and kidnap suspect were paraded all over the country and I went to the police to get the court were these criminals were being arraigned but I got no response,” Falana said.

State governors should fight for State Police: Falana said it was high time the 36 state governors challenged the federal government over the centralized policing in Nigeria. “The FG has violated the constitution; what I mean is section 214 of the constitution provides that there shall be only one police force in our country that shall bear arms but over the years, all other paramilitary force carry arms. “There is no way you can police over 170 million Nigerians with one police force. The federal police will deal with federal offence, the state police will deal with state offence. Even local government can have police.

Chief of Army Staff, Buratai should mind his business: In a clear attack on the Chief of Army Staff, Falana said Nigerian army has no business with internal security unless in dire situations. He also said Buratai has no moral right to harass Nigerians and teach on how to protect lives and properties in Enugu after it allegedly killed and buried Shi’ites in Kaduna state last December.

Politics / Lagos Demolishes 84 Gated Streets by olillywales(m): 6:19pm On May 05, 2016
The Lagos State Government says it has demolished 84 street gates which were shut against motorists before 12 midnight deadline it stipulated.

The Lagos State Government, in a bid to resolve traffic gridlock in the metropolis, ordered all street gates to be opened till 12 midnight of each day so that motorists could drive through them in a bid to decongest traffic in the state.

Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami disclosed this at a news conference on Thursday in Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

He said out of the 148 street gates earmarked for demolition across the state, 84 of them had been pulled down for failing to abide by government’s instruction to leave them open till 12 midnight.

“The Ministry promoted 24-hour access through gated streets in the State with the involvement of Community Development Associations in the State. So far, enforcement in 84 locations has been effected as at April, 2016. This is being done to improve security, free flow of traffic, safety of lives and properties of all citizens in the State,” he said.

The commissioner warned landlords and others who normally lock their street gates before 12 midnight to prevent motorists from plying them to desist from such immediately as government would demolish such gates forcefully for refusal to comply.

On boundary dispute, Folami lamented that Ogun State had encroached seriously on Lagos’ land, saying that “Ogun State has almost taken a large chunk of Lagos land.” He said because of the dispute arising from land, the state government had begun to erect signposts to mark out its land from that of Ogun State to avoid encroachment.

“The Ministry facilitated the erection of 114 sign posts at inter state and inter local government boundaries to minimize conflicts and inform the public about same in collaboration with the Surveyor-General’s Office and the Lagos State Number Plate Agency. Additional 114 will be installed within the next few months to further delineate the boundaries and inform the public about same.

“Efforts are also being made to ameliorate the border communities’ infrastructure gap with provision of potable water, access to electric power supply and access roads and other life improving facilities.

“Boundary beacons either removed or damaged are being replaced in collaboration with the Surveyor General’s office starting with the Agbara in Badagry this year. This will also minimize border conflicts and ease administration in the areas. Other areas of attention include Ode-Omi in Lekki LCDA, Alagbado in Ojokoro LCDA and Agbede in Ikorodu North LCDA,” Folami stated.

On the construction of 114 roads across all councils in Lagos, Folami disclosed that the roads would be completed by the end of June, saying that the roads were being constructed by the councils under government’s supervision.

“The Ministry supervised the construction of 114 standard Local Government access roads with covered drains, walkways and street light on the basis of two per Local Government with an average length of 665 meters which are at more than 48% completion as at the time of reporting.

“This initiative has created an average of 32 professional and skilled jobs, 17 unskilled jobs directly while indirect jobs have been estimated at 21 per road. Thus, about 6,000 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs have been created in the local areas of the state with the initiative.

“The Councils on their own have also constructed over 233 other roads, drainage and culverts with varying standards and completion stage of more than 86% as at the time of reporting. It is of note that the Community Development Associations are taking ownership of these facilities which made monitoring relatively easier,” he said.

Politics / Fani-kayode Begs EFCC To Invite Him by olillywales(m): 12:33pm On May 05, 2016
Femi Fani-Kayode, Nigeria's former aviation minister has reacted to rumours that he has been hiding from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

In a new social media post, Fani-Kayode stated that he was awaiting an invitation from the anti-graft agency. See post below:

I have just read some absurd media reports in which have qouted their sources in the EFCC as saying that I had gone underground and that I was hiding from them. This is false. I have not been invited by the EFCC by letter and neither have they phoned me or attempted to reach me in any other way. I have been in my Abuja home for the last few weeks and I am not hiding from anyone.

I am not a coward and this attempt to further demonise and humiliate me by the EFCC will fail. If they have any questions for me why don't they just write to me or call me, give me a date and I will be in their office. I have made my position clear on the issue of the Presidential campaign funds, I have written an essay about it in my various columns about two weeks ago and I have been waiting for the EFCC to reach me ever since then. They have invited others but they have not invited me. I do not believe that I have done anything wrong and this latest attempt to criminalise me and make me look like a fugitive from justice will fail.

Others that were invited to the EFCC over this same campaign funds issue were sent letters of invitation and were reached. I appear to be the exception and now these hideous lies are being fed to the newspapers to make it look as if I am in hiding or that I am running from them just to sensationalise the whole issue.
This is also to justify what the EFCC wish to do which is to arrest me in public, humiliate me or to storm my home and lock me up indefinitely. There is no need for all that drama and if it happens that way the Nigerian people will know why. I have no fear of the EFCC, I will respond to their invitation any day and anytime they send it to me and I will help them to clarify whatever issues they wish to raise in any way that I can.

Others were invited in a civilised way and were treated in a humane and decent manner. I really do wonder why I should be treated differently, criminalised in the newspapers in this way and not even afforded the common courtesy of a formal invitation by them. I await their letter or their call and I leave those that wish to give the impression that I am running from them to God.

Crime / 10 Gunmen Kidnap Monarch’s Pregnant Wife, 4 Children In Akwa Ibom by olillywales(m): 9:31pm On Apr 30, 2016
No fewer than 10 unknown gunmen on Friday night kidnapped the pregnant wife of Ubong Assam, the paramount ruler of Esit Eket in Akwa Ibom.

The gunmen also abducted the four children of the traditional ruler.

Chief Asuquo Abia, the Secretary, Traditional Rulers Council, Esit Eket, told NAN in Esit Eket on Saturday that the gunmen invaded the palace of the paramount ruler in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Abia, who is also the Village Head of Afaha Akpenedi, said the gunmen shot sporadically for over five hours from 1.30 a.m. to 6 a.m.

``The gunmen destroyed part of the palace with dynamites and broke into all the rooms and carted away valuables,’’ he said.

He said the gunmen arrived at the palace on Thursday claiming to be policemen from Abuja on an investigation.

``They later came back the next day around 1.30 a.m. and shot sporadically till 6 a.m. in the morning,’’ Abia said.

Also, a family member, Mr Norbert Assam, said that seven people wounded in the incident were hospitalised in the state.

He said that the paramount ruler’s wife was eight months pregnant when she was kidnapped.

Assam also said that the gunmen escaped the scene with their victims in the paramount ruler’s Jeep.

``They came in two vehicles, a white Hilux van and a sports utility vehicle; they met the paramount ruler and said they came from Abuja to investigate a matter of attempted murder on the life of the monarch.

``We saw two masked men in the Hilux van who they claimed were suspects of the attempted murder case, but they did not allow us to go near the vehicles,’’ Assam said.

Politics / FG To Build Hostels For Idps In 24 States by olillywales(m): 1:01pm On Apr 29, 2016
A member of the Presidential Flood Relief Rehabilitation Committee Mr Ifiok Abia, has said that the Federal Government will build hostels for Internally Displayed Persons (IDPs) in 24 states affected by floods.

He disclosed this while presenting relief materials to flood victims in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, on Thursday, April 28.

According to him, the Federal Government will also build 10 solar-powered boreholes for the IDPs.

"Already, work has begun on some of the boreholes in some states while some have even been completed'', he said.

Abia listed materials donated to Akwa Ibom flood victims to as 100 bags of rice, beans, as well as cartons of sugar, tea, powdered milk and tinned tomatoes.

Others included 800 ceiling boards, 20 bags of roofing nails, 800 towels, blankets, mosquito nets, pharmaceutical products, among other items.

The state's Deputy Governor Moses Ekpo, urged the federal government to ensure that contractors handling the procurement and delivery of relief materials to flood victims are from the contingent states

Ekpo confirmed that materials listed to be delivered to the affected persons has been duly received by the state government.

He appealed to citizens not to build their houses on waterways to avoid being affected by flood in case of heavy rain falls.

"When you build on a water passage, it could be likened to the Biblical foolish man, who built his house on a sandy ground.

"A wise man would rather build on a ground free of water so that such building will stand the test of time.

"We have received information from weather forecasting agencies that this year's rain will be worse and with heavier impacts than that of the last few years.

"Please ensure that you do not dump refuse on drainage because such practice will redirect the water to your house since you cannot stop water", he said.

According to sources, Femi who went for an eye surgery years back which ended his career has resorted into begging when help failed him from every corner.

He practically begs from anyone he spots. ‘If you see him and greet him like an ex-footballer he is, the next thing is for him to ask you for money and his slogan has always been, ‘I don’t know what my wife and kids will eat today, we have nothing at home’, a source said. The source also said this has been working, until people got tired of the same story everyday and now do not take him seriously anymore, which has really made things gone worse for him.
