africanist:
We must change our orientation as Africans. Today, we celebrates double wedding ceremonies due to our colonial experience. The engagement i.e. the traditional wedding is original to Africa. However, the church or registry was borrowed from Europeans. Spending on double-wedding is a waste. U can register your marriage with little or no cost at the registry and go to church for marriage blessing without crowds, and later do the main thing "African traditional wedding". BEST OF LUCK.
Hmm Africanist, food for thought, good thought i dare say. but even if the brother is lucky to find a sister who is not pushed by desperation and is ready to follow this your low key advice am not sure her family members would want to hear of it especially if the couples are from the demographic location the poster was hinting at.
But then like you said African orientation,if not how many westerners do traditional marriage when we go ahead to do court, traditional and church wedding?

The greatest Ye-king of goals, i read the article on punch yesterday i was like what is really happening to him, well i think maybe he's disturbed having learn't his marriage crashed so to say, overall he is a quiet type and also a cheerful giver so i don't think his giving attitude should be related to being mentally imbalanced.Well for me i think he should come out of his shelf and contribute his own quota to the development of football in our dear country, we need people like him in the glass house.
I guess we Nigerians are so used to leaders who horde so much cash their generations to come wont have to bother bout dough, that's why when a Nigerian is actually giving it becomes abnormal and looks like his mentally imbalanced. But if he was oppressing his neighbours with his wealth that may have seem ok to the reporter.

MIBB:
recap this

The Minister of Information and Communications, Dora Akunyili, yesterday got more than she bargained for when Enerique Fernando Arrundell, the Venezuelan Ambassador to Nigeria, used the opportunity of his visit to her office to tell Nigerians some hard lessons on how to manage, develop and utilize their God-given natural resources for the benefit and good of all.

The envoy, who was responding to an appeal by Mrs. Akunyili to help woo some of his country’s investors to come in and establish refineries under the federal government's planned deregulation of the downstream sector of the nation's petroleum industry, advised Nigeria to rather look inwards and to take full control of the industry.

Though, he acknowledged Venezuela as a prominent member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) like Nigeria, he said his country will be willing to collaborate with the federal government to develop the industry.

The hard truth

Mr. Arrundell said, “In Venezuela, since 1999, we’ve never had a raise in fuel price. We only pay $1.02 to fill the tank. What I pay for with N12,000 here (Nigeria), in Venezuela I’ll pay N400. What is happening is simple. Our President (Hugo Chavez) decided one day to control the industry, because it belongs to the Venezuelans. If you don’t control the industry, your development will be in the hands of the foreigners.

You have to have your own country. The oil is your country’s. Sorry I am telling you this. I am giving you the experience of Venezuela. We have 12 refineries in the United States, 18,000 gas stations in the West Coast. All we are doing is in the hands of the Venezuelans.”

The envoy said, “Before 1999, we had three or four foreign companies working with us. That time they were taking 80 per cent, and giving us 20. Now, we have 90 per cent, and giving them 10. But now, we have 22 countries working with us in that condition.

It is the Venezuelan condition. You know why? It is because 60 per cent of the income goes to social programmes. That’s why we have 22,000 medical doctors assisting the people in the community. The people don’t go to the hospital; doctors go to their houses. This is because the money is handled by the Venezuelans. How come Nigeria that has more technical manpower than Venezuela, with 150 million people, and very intellectual people all around, not been able to get it right? The question is: If you are not handling your resources, how are you going to handle the country?

“So, it is important that Nigeria takes control of her resources. We have no illiterate people. We have over 17 new universities totally free. I graduated from the university without paying one cent, and take three meals every day, because we have the resources. We want the resources of the Nigerian people for the Nigerians. It is enough! It is enough, Minister!”Government’s plea

Earlier, Mrs. Akunyili thanked the Ambassador for his visit, saying it is a demonstration of his love for the African continent, pointing out that there has always been some level of bilateral trade between the two countries, though very skeletal, as a result of the low awareness of the latent potential of Nigeria as an investor’s goldmine.

Drawing attention to the huge potential in the nation’s telecommunications sector, which is being exploited optimally by South African investors, the Minister noted: “There has been trade between the two countries actually, but we do not have many Venezuelans setting up manufacturing outfits in Nigeria. I want you to use your good office to send a message across to your people that Nigeria is a goldmine for genuine investors. We want them to come invest just as other investors are doing in the telecoms sector.”

She gave the assurance that government will give them the full cooperation, adding that President Yar’Adua’s administration is working hard to ensure that the country’s economy is taken to the next level through the initiative of the seven-point agenda and Vision 20-2020, designed to make Nigeria one of the largest economies of the world by the year 2020.

The Punch Version I read yesterday had the man shouting @ Dora Akunyili " Minister this is enough!! Enough is Enough
Abeg helep me dey tell them.truth is if you as an individual dont take control of your life others will do it for you but to their pleasing which will not be too good for you; this also applies to whole countries.

Evil Brain:
The laws of economics, like the laws of physics, are universal. The only reason it seem that things are different in Nigeria is the overwhelming effect of government (and its corruption) distorting the markets. Take away the excessive government interference and we're no different than any other country.

The only reason why things aren't working here is because we aren't doing what we're supposed to do. We only pretend to do it while actually doing something else. We pretend as if we're investing in our infrastructure when all we're interested in is sharing out big contracts as political patronage while trying to look good on camera. Everybody is just trying to make money for himself.

And thats the real reason why we haven't deregulated yet. Because if the government didn't own the power companies there'll be no excuse to award multi-billion dollar contracts that politicians can get rich off. And if there was no fuel subsidy then the river of free money in Abuja would dry up.

I have strong suspicion that Aganga's plan is just more pre-election bullcrap (like Obasanjo's "commissioning and commissioning"wink and that as usual, nothing significant will change. But lets wait and see sha.

Its not like we can do anything about it.
@ evil brain: if you know the corruption factor always screws whatever economic theory from taking effect in this country why make it sound like all we need to do is sacrifice and reap the rewards later? even this generation is still struggling with the mis-appropriation of the SAP program.
A government that is serious and focus should first make alternative sources to fuel possible like power and invest on other infrastructures instead of just making the whole situation worse for the populace. Me thinks our leaders av long sold their souls to the dark side, well with the election year fast approaching with policies like this its his funeral.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Close To Population Disaster – British Council Raises Alarm by ollypass: 4:37pm On Sep 02, 2010
@Kengawo, pls read this VERY WELL and pls kindly not make this same mistake again. You said Nigeria's growth rate is 1.999%, where did u get dat from, I bet you are mistaken. Before, I comment further, my position on this post is this: In as much as am not supporting the 'assertion' of the British Council, we need not turn a deaf ear.

@kengawo and @oisehumen. This report did not say Nigeria WILL have demographic disaster but is says and i quote NIGERIA could become the fifth most populous country in the world, teetering on the edge of a “demographic disaster” unless its stagnant economy rapidly

expands to support its teeming youth population. Please, kindly take note of words written in bold font

@ Ayo:God bless you. 1 thing i have learnt on nairaland is that the average Nigerian hardly thinks for himself but is too quick to jump on the bandwagon of popular opinion, don't know if its the fear of being the odd one out.

i agree, but all those things are coming cause too many in the nigerian population are DISENFRANCHISED, not cause too many nigerians exist. Our population is disenfranchising a lot of our population because there's too little for too many, but i say there's no population problem because we haven't utilized 20% of our potential

@ ikengawo: as long as your resources, tapped or untapped, falls far short in comparison to your population you do have a tendency for a demographic disaster. av you taken the time to realize that the more you put forward your 'enlightened' arguments against the poster the more it is in agreement with it?

In the final analysis it shouldn't be about where the stats are coming from but it should be bout, is this thing fact? and if it is can we implement policies based on these facts to better the lot of the citizenry? Why waste time with senseless jabberings?

Lets not be like the proverbial ostrich that buries its head in the sand to avoid the storm on the horizon.
God bless Nigeria!

CultureRe: Directed At Nigerian Teenagers In Diaspora by ollypass: 12:20pm On Aug 10, 2010
ChinenyeN:
Hmm. . . well, if you manage to find enough like-minded Nigerians, then I would suggest you set up a website dedicated to understanding the socio-politics of Nigeria, since much of Nigeria's problems stem from a stagnant (to say the very least) socio-political environment. Set it up like a neutral and independent online journal/socio-political organization; not affiliated with an particular party/ideology.

Try to develop it into an organization that will work particularly toward giving the youth both in Nigeria and diaspora, a political voice, in terms of a neutral third party/independent youth committee which reviews and assesses the socio-political environment, in hopes of training and raising youth who can function as politically unaffiliated, socio-political youth "auditors" of policy, politicians, political parties, etc. Youth "auditors"/assessors of the overall socio-political atmosphere and undertakings.

Its headquaters should be in diaspora and there should be a 'central station' stationed at Nigeria's capital. Should the capital of Nigeria be moved, so should that 'central station'. Then it can have various chapters in various states.

Such a setup will not be an easy task though. So you should seek like-minded, well-informed youth who feel and are up to the task.
you would really need like-minded teens cos can the average teen in the diaspora be interested in all the socio-political dynamics illustrated above? i doubt much. Also Since its about effecting changes in future you should look for friends in the corridors of power, that way what ever is written could fall into a listening ear in Aso ville which is what i feel we need now.

FamilyRe: Is Marriage Now Old-fashioned? by ollypass: 12:43pm On Jul 19, 2010
Yinkaboy:
People get married for the wrong reasons we brorhers are so quick to chase the hottest thing on the block. But, so slow to ask whether the person has the same values as we do, or would make a good wife, mother, and friend. Marriage is work, people forget that, you have to put the effort in for it to grow. We treat marriage like its the new BLACKBERRY, good for a season, but the next model is coming soon.
This is just the crux of the matter: Ask your self how long is the average courtship time now? How well does the couple know them selves? Girl is often driven to marry cos all her friends have done it and she can't be waiting for her hi-school boyfriend so she settles for someone who can give her security nat the expense of all other intangible things like love, respect and commitment. The man in return (who may have lost his love to a made man while he was still trying to make it in life) may have married out of pressure from family and peers only to meet another which will make him regret why he rushed into it cos this colleague at work understands him better than his wife and they even spend more time together working than he does with his wife at home.
So the stage becomes set and before you say robinson cruso, infidelity follows then the inevitable discovery and then,

People should change this orientation of marriage being the fad and every one jumping into the band wagon and ask your self and your intended partner:do we have what it takes materially, physically, psychologically and emotionally to embark on this adventure? Untill then my own personal opinion is "No be by Force".
PoliticsRe: Monarch Sacked As Journalists Are Freed by ollypass: 12:16pm On Jul 19, 2010
I don't get it,the journalists were dropped in a bush why is every body thanking Onovo and his boys like they had a hand in the release? Now they are just going to round up people that may be in the wrong place in the wrong time and start parading them as "suspects" to the kidnap. At least that would be the icing on their cake of efficiency. This is like the bakassi boys saga reloaded!

At 4-play and paddy lo: what are the both of you doing?almost every thread on finance matters is being hijacked by the both of you and what is the prize you are both fighting for? Nobel for economics? I really have a preference for such threads that have the potential to add value to Nigerians and policy makers as opposed to stuffs like "what do you think bout mercy johnsons latest lip stick colour?" but the way you both are going bout your arguments makes those who are not "gurus" lose intrest in the thread, then before you realize the only person still following you guys is probably beef(who i guess is re-filling his glass as i type)
Both of you are like two parallel lines and will continue to quote links from BBC to CNN just to prove his point and show the other a charlatan and in the process we lose track of the original argument which primarily is about our 7% growth and if there is a possibility the figures were cooked.

I Really would love to call a truce cos the both of you are no doubt some of the brightest minds (on finance) as far as this forum goes but you should be able to translate that knowledge into empowering the rest of us with constructive easy-to-understand-for-a-lay-man suuugestions, not loose us in endless statistics that is just aimed at proving the other is a quack (which you both stayed up all night [Nigerian time] trying to do).
Thank you for your time. (beef, make me glass while you at it)

Because it is obvious economic indicators aint supporting anything near 7%.
