BEING THE FULL TEXT OF EMERGENCY PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED BY THE EKITI STATE GOVERNMENT ON THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 2016

Gentlemen of the Press,

Information reaching us indicates that one of the abducted members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Afolabi Akanni has died in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

It will be recalled that the honourable member has been unlawfully incarcerated in DSS custody since March 4, 2016. A court order directing his release since March 11, 2016 was ignored by the DSS.

Significantly, since his illegal detention, he has been held incommunicado without access to his family members, doctors and lawyers.

We call on the DSS to immediately clarify the situation as to the status (dead or alive) of Hon Afolabi Akanni, representing Efon Constituency by producing him physically for all Nigerians, particularly his immediate family to see.

While we are waiting for the DSS, we urge every resident of Ekiti State, particularly the people of his immediate Constituency in Efon to remain calm.

Thank you.
Hon. Lanre Ogunsuyi,
Commissioner for Information, Youths
and Sports Development.

PoliticsWhy DSS Arrested Ekiti Lawmakers by Oloniyan(op): 6:58am On Mar 07, 2016
Operatives of the Department of State Services have arrested Ekiti lawmakers.

The arrest, it was gathered, was aimed at ascertaining their involvement in the alleged fraud that characterised the last governorship election in the state.

Those arrested were described as Fayose’s men because of their closeness to the governor.

A former Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Dr. Temitope Aluko, had alleged that former President Goodluck Jonathan gave Fayose $35m to prosecute the election.

Before that money was given, Aluko further alleged that the former President also gave Fayose another $2m to enable him win the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primary.

Fayose was the candidate of the PDP during the election and it was alleged that he used the money to manipulate the security agencies which enabled them to move against governorship candidates of other political parties, including Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress.

The governor has repeatedly denied the allegation.

Since the allegation was made, the DSS was said to have been investigating those whose names were mentioned by Aluko.

Aluko was also the star witness for the governor while defending his mandate at the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

Those whose arrest could be confirmed by our correspondent in Abuja on Saturday evening were a member of the State House of Assembly representing Efon Alaye Constituency, Mr. Afolabi Akani and another member of the Assembly, Mr. Musa Arogundade, who is representing Ado Ekiti Constituency 1.

Also in the DSS net is Mr. Ropo Ogunjobi, who was recently sacked by the governor as the Chairman of State Internal Revenue Board.

It was gathered that not less than 25 suspects would be invited by the operatives.

“More arrest would be made in the coming days,” a security source told our correspondent on condition of anonymity.

However, while investigating the involvement of the suspects in the Ekitigate, investigations by our correspondent further revealed that the DSS was said to have stumbled on other issues.

While some of the suspects, including those yet to be arrested, were said to be the “pointers for the strike team” during the election, the DSS was also said to be working on the business activities of some of them.

“We dug into their past, their business interests and others and what we found was quite revealing,” an operative told our correspondent.

Apart from that, it was gathered that the DSS was also investigating the educational qualifications of some of the suspects.

Our correspondent also gathered that one of the suspects was said to have been involved in the blocking of the road during an alleged plan to impeach the governor by 19 All Progressives Congress lawmakers in the last dispensation.

A source said, “One of the suspects used trailers to block the Itawure-Ilesha Road and kept the keys, thereby preventing the free-flow of vehicles.

“He will tell us on whose orders he carried out the illegal action.

“He was also the one that was alleged to have led the team that assaulted Justice Ademola Adeyeye on the corridor of Ado Ekiti High Court sometimes ago. We won’t allow such to go away without investigation.”

Ogunjobi, who was said to be Fayose’s friend, was said to be undergoing investigation on the management of the state funds while he held sway at the revenue board.

Before his appointment, he was said to be an officer in the same board, but was said to have been a close ally to Fayose before the latter became the governor.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti State House of Assembly has declared four lawmakers missing after the men of the DSS invaded the state assembly on Friday.

The Speaker, Kola Oluwawole, while briefing journalists in Ado Ekiti on Saturday with other 12 lawmakers, claimed that more than 10 DSS men, who were armed to the teeth, invaded the Assembly complex, shooting sporadically into the air.

He said the action caused panic among members and staff of the assembly, who had to scamper for safety.

“At the end of the commotion created by this barbaric act, we discovered that four of our members could not be found.

“It was only this morning that we were able to establish that Afolabi Akanni, representing Efon Constituency, was abducted and taken to Abuja.

“The whereabouts of three other members is still unknown as we speak, and reasons for the invasion and abduction of our members are not known.”

It was also learnt that the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Toyin Ojo and Special Assistant on Works, Odunayo Arinka were also invited by the DSS.

PoliticsSpeaker Of Ekiti HOA Released Press Statement On DSS Arrest Of Its Members by Oloniyan(op): 8:45pm On Mar 05, 2016
BEING FULL TEXT OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED ON SATURDAY, MARCH 5, 2016 BY THE SPEAKER & MEMBERS OF THE EKITI STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ON THE INVASION OF THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY BY ARMED MEN OF DSS ON FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 2016

Gentlemen of the Press,
We have called you here to intimate the public through your various medium, the clandestine plot by the President Mohammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) Federal Government to destabilise the Ekiti State Government, using the instrumentalities of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Yesterday, the House of Assembly Chamber was invaded by armed men of the DSS. Not minding that various committees of the House were meeting, more than 10 DSS men who were armed to the teeth invaded the Assembly Complex, shooting sporadically into the air, thereby causing panic among members and staff of the House of Assembly, who had to scamper for safety.
At the end of the commotion created by this barbaric act, we discovered that four of our members could not be found.
It was only this morning that we were able to establish that Hon Afolabi Akanni, representing Efon Constituency was abducted and taken to Abuja.
Whereabouts of three other members is still unknown as we speak, and reasons for the invasion and abduction of our members are not known.
However, we got it on good authority that the script now being acted by the DSS is part of the APC and President Buhari’s clandestine plot to cripple the Ekiti State Government by arresting and detaining top functionaries of the government.
The plot is to harass, intimidate and embarrass top officials of the Ayodele Fayose government because of his critical stance on the Buhari’s government.
We are aware that 18 of our members have been pencilled down for harassment and the game plan is to harass them to submission, with a view to coercing them into signing an already prepared notice of impeachment of the governor and his deputy.
However, we wish to inform those orchestrating the harassment and intimidation of officials of the Ekiti State Government, especially honourable members of the State House of Assembly that this is 2016 and not 2006. The same tactics used 10 years ago to truncate democracy in Ekiti State will not work this time.
We therefore wish to tell the APC agents
of political instability that this time
around, this House of Assembly will not
be available for any ungodly use.
We also wish to remind Nigerians of how
in September last year, the Federal
Government invaded the Akwa Ibom
State Government House with armed
men of the Department of State Security
(DSS).
Up till today, Nigerians are yet to be told
officially why, in a Federal system of
government in which federating units
enjoy some degree of autonomy, the Government House occupied by a Governor who enjoys the same immunity enjoys by the President as provided by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was invaded by armed men of the DSS.
While we are not afraid of persecution
from anyone or government agency,
including the DSS, we wish to state that
the level at which the Buhari-led Federal
Government is taking political vendetta
and muzzling of opposition both in the
Peoples Democratic Party and within the
APC is dangerous to the survival of
democracy in the country.
Nigeria is not a banana republic that can
be ruled anyhow by anyone and Mr Lawal
Daura (from Katsina) and his men, who
are playing exactly the same role played
between 1984 and 1985 by the National
Security Organisation (NSO) under Lawal
Rafindadi (from Katsina) should know that
this reign of brute force over
constitutional democracy will fail.
This is because we have seen them
operate before and here they are now,
trying to take us back to that inglorious
era of dictatorship and barbarism where
the DSS (then NSO) was used to oppress
Nigerians, throwing them in jail without
trial. This time around, we are in a
democracy that can never accommodate
that 1984 era of draconian rule.
Lastly, let it be reiterated once again that
this House of Assembly is a partner in the
progress of the Ekiti State government
under the able leadership of Governor
Peter Ayodele Fayose. Therefore, the
Abuja based agents of destabilisation
should get it into their heads that we will
never be harassed or intimidated into
buying into their sinister agenda.
Thank you, and God bless.
