Yeah,it doesn't sell as much (in price)as hybrids(Hausa tomatoes) but the it does affect the price of the hybrid tomatoes ...at the market, the market women buying to resell often opt to buy the local oblong tomato cus it's cheaper.when a crate of hybrid is selling for 15k that of the local can sell for as less as 3-5k,most times thier customers don't care.tomato is tomato to them..

Your observation is on point. States like Ogun, Oyo, Osun that are located near the national border have more influx of foreign farmers (from togo, benin rep) and benue farmers who grow those tiny/oblong/watery local varieties.

Pls note, "Hausa tomatoes" are not hybrid, it's the language of southern market women for all big/medium size, firm and robust tomatoes. The fact remains northern farmers don't plant hybrids, they grow cheap opv like uc 82, Rio grande, Roma, etc. There fruits are also big and firm to some extent but they don't do well at the peak of rainfall in the south. When those robust hybrid fruits grown by educated farmers from the south hit market during raining period, those women also call it hausa tomatoes.

Bro, lemme give you a tip..

I'm also into farming and I do mingle with Olden days farmers. I observed something about these papas, which is they mostly keep their money at home! Most of them don't use bank at all!

Did you know they didn't suffer during the cash issh? Ever since then, I been doing the same. But instead of me saving in naira, it's dollar i do use!

If I wanna save 200k for Eg, I just buy it in dollar and put keep!

So as a farmer, it's good to always have cash saved outside bank!

Noted sire.

I am beginning to like Tinubu.
Emefiele deserves to not only be suspended but thrown into jail. The hardship he caused Nigerians will forever haunt him.

Next is for Tinubu to open the Seme border. If he does this, I will support him wholeheartedly

Hardship is understatement sis, I had money but no cash to pay my labourers in the farm as unskilled labour don't accept transfer. I couldn't execute majority of my projects. Till today, the trauma makes me develop that fear to keep all my money in the bank, now i feel relieved, thanks to Jagaban

How about the various noodle packs that have shrunk to half their size?

Those ones are normal and necessary for preservation's sake. During cooking, they would still swell. You can compare them with some bread after which you remove the first 2 to 3 slice, the remaining are designed with bottomless pit.

ok sire, per crate or per big basket? i asked cos locals dont use crate, abi those in your area don upgrade?
Agriculture / Re: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by OluchiDelly: 11:08pm On May 30, 2023

Well

1. Price is fluctuating here, a crate of local tomato is 12000 as at Friday last week, I'm yet to ask for today's market price.

2. As per yield, my tomatoes are just ripening now, and fruiting well.

3. 1500 stand currently, though planting like 1k stands every week

local in what context? as in those watery small non-hybrid variety or grown in naija? if you refer to those watery breed, then 12k is pretty good for a crate.

@reuben010, the purported import from neighbouring countries that hit the FP few days ago coupled with the little availability of local breed in the markets, this is gradually crashing the price. i sold 14.5k on sat.
Food / Is this not a Pure Scam? by OluchiDelly: 8:45pm On May 29, 2023
Manufacturers are defrauding consumers since...
When almost 30% of the entire size of your bites is a vacuum in the name of branding or by deliberate action (like that sliced bread) then it's nothing but a scam. If you want to use empty space for designing your foods, then the packs/nylon should be transparent for intending consumers to see the the exact content inside.

What's your take?

REUBEN010:

Based on observations overtime, market dynamics of tomatoes follow a regular pattern. Most tomato farmers (a major source of glut because of large land holdings and cheaper inputs) in the North practice irrigation-fed agriculture. They commence cultivation of tomatoes and some other vegetables during August. So their produce hits the market from December until April with few spilling into May.

On the other hand, local tomato farmers here in the South practice rain-fed and have to wait until April or May before commencing cultivation to avoid losses caused by vagaries in weather (as already seen this year).

The few enterprising and privileged farmers in the South take advantage of the short lag between when Northern tomatoes are leaving the market and when local tomato farmers in the South start producing and supplying markets. This lag is Between May and July (or August in some years). So in order to hit the goldmine at this scarcity period, you have to nurse your seeds by February, March or early April.

Congratulations!!! You just achieved that.

Just my opinion while we await opinions from others.

In addition, there are also reports of outbreak of tuta absoluta (popularly called tomato ebola) in some parts of the North. This further cut down supply from the north, this really contributed to the current unsual hike in tom price.

BTW, what type of pepper variety did you grow and how well does it perform at the peak of rainy season.?

I very well understand the terminologies. My confusion is that your crops matured way earlier than the regular 90 - 120days after sowing. Please can you share information about how you achieved this and what variety was cultuvated?

I am very sorry ...a mix up from my end here, my brain probably picked up the date of sowing my maize instead of my Tom. I just checked my farm record now, check it out and pls do the maths yourself for both nursery and transplanting, the transpl date will be more appropriate cos the nursery overstayed due to some issues beyond my control. Few pickings commenced on 15th, while Mayor harvesting on 20th May.
My apology once again. Thank you, love your sense of paying attention to details.

Baba you are 100% right.
Let me share my little experience.
I relocated to a bigger site late last year to expand my production. I use same template I used in farming my crops in my previous farm but I can tell you sir that i have being failing back to back till I hit the rock bottom. Millions of naira wasted since I doubled my production . I wan buy sniper drink but when I see say e cost pass malt and milk I change my mind.
Tho things has begin to change gradually.
Farming is not for the mild heart oooo.
And I would advise any farmer to test the river with a foot when ever you want to upscale your production or when changing location.
If possible do soil analysis

grin grin grin

I asked about the history of the land the other day if tomato has previously been cultivated on it before. Deficiency wl not give leaves dark spots. its disease, most likely early blight, late blight is worse. Get ortiva top or blue snow, both contain same ingredients.

It has currently affected like 40% of my diva stands and very few of platinum...

I spoke the country manager of East West seeds today's and she confirmed it BW..

40%! The BW strain in your soil must be the stubborn one o. Sadly it has no cure, maybe few prevention. If you had grown poor tomato variety on that land before, it can also populate the bacteria.
With this one that it also affects few platinum, you will need to rest the land after this batch and do crop rotation for few years before u can use it for tomato again.
