Maryam1234: I'm following with rapt attention Sir,are you thinking of using irrigation for the farm after Raining season?you have FADAMA? We are already harvesting and eating our yam and you're planting now.I am not understanding Sir,or it's your farm close to a river? Too many questions, sorry I'm just a curious fella Thank God for the differential weather condition between North and South. It's helping us to boost food security as a nation. we dont need irrigation to plant yam by Nov in the south, mulching with leaves will take care of scorching effect of the sun and as early as June ( even in May if the farm is in a marshy area) new yam is out in the south. Apart from harvestin early, if the root systems are not damaged, you can harvest twice from a stand, the smaller sizes among the second harvests are mostly used as yam seeds for planting materials. |

FarmTech: . N32k. Isn't that outrageous? Not really. Its Bayer product not regular Asian product. Their products are not cheap but very efficient. It was around 20k few years back before the crashing of naira, same way regular glyphosate jumped from less than 2k to 4k. |

mcyemite: 3) actually the land is on a slope, there is a big valley down the land so water doesnt stay at all...not even flash flood. 6)i am not sure there would be any plant left to stake before they start fruiting.....they wilt by the dozen everyday. Very pathetic. In your next batch, adhere to the advice of contributors above esp getting seeds that have some level of disease resistance. Peace. |
Agriculture › Re: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by OluchiDelly: 9:45pm On Sep 30, 2022 |
mcyemite: thanks for the reply boss, first of, i am a first time farmer and this is my pilot project..all i know about tomato farming,i learnt from this thread and watching farmer akinloye videos on youtube. 1) initially i planted just one seedling per spot but after transplanting i still have a lot of seedlings on the bed so i was convinced by some people to go ahead and double it,obviously that was my first mistake. 2) the weeds too are there because of the incessant rain fall, i have contracted someone to clear the weed but its been raining everyday.. 3) there is no flood at all on the farm land, its actually compound ,it just happen to be a very big one,but there has never been insident of flooding. 4)i spary every 7 daysi have sprayed just 3 times, the tomatoes are just 26day old after transplanting(23 day in nursery)..i am using saaf, cabri duo and jumper d 5)the cultivar is royal bold f1 from harvest field...
please with your last statement are u suggesting it could be too much water? 3. You complained of incessant rainfall yet u said no flooding. When I said flood, I did not mean a large mass of water like those that ransacked communities. If the compound is fenced, it wl also create barrier for rain water to jet out. I normally puncture my fence at the base for this purpose. 5. Royal bold is a big fruit variety, so prepare very well for strong stakes. 6. It's wilting, it looks more like bacteria wilt than verticilium wilt. Both are usually activated by excess water in the soil. Fusarium wilt is more of dry season disease. |

mcyemite: please help, some of my tomatoes are looking like this...i used nematicide before transplanting..what could the problem be senior farmers.. @Farmerakinloye6 @granpoh @oluchidelly @ideepaul 1. I can see 2 to 3 seedlings at a spot, this is not healthy for for your crop. Oga Akinloye has actually condemned this your method earlier. Those who plant 1 seedling per hole are still trying to prune for betterment of the crop 2. Your farm is too weedy. This can also harbour germs. 3. Your ridges may be too low which allow flood to partially or fully submerge the length of your seedlings. Flood is no tomato's friend. Also watch out for lowland/potholes that can harbour stagnant water beside your crop during rainfall. 4. How often do u spray insecticide and fungicide? 5. Tell us the name of the cultivar you planted. I pity our opv tomato brother in this current weather in the south. |

betabread: Its d local 2.5 month variety, i planted 0.8acre to see how okra farm is and see the potential in dry season when I install drip Bros why nauh! Why spending huge resources to maintain an okra farm for almost 3months b4 maturity when there are improved varieties with just 45 to 50days maturity everywhere? 0.8acre (roughly an acre)...that one don pass experimenting a beg! The wilting is also partly a function of the variety. You are planning to burn fuel on top drip for about 5months (3months maturity plus 2 months harvesting) by dry season? ...when you can burn less fuel on top improved varieties for 3months or less. Bros think am well o. |

Farmerakinloye6: One of the reasons I covered it is to hasten the germination.. the seedlings has germination now, 8 day today... Mine is 4 days today and they are already bringing out whitish heads...raised bed tho, since we are in the middle of rain coupled with drip, i feel the transplanting shock will not be severe. |

Farmerakinloye6: Please I need contribution/insight ASAP, this is a friend tomato plants. Calcium nitrate was applied like 4 days ago (side dressing) and urea mistakenly applied by her workers 1 week ago (side dressing). Could it be the calcium nitrate that burn the plant? To me it look like over dosage foliar fertilizer burnt but am told foliar fertilizer was not spray. What your opinion or experience with calcium nitrate? Definitely not calcium nitrate issue. Someone had a similar issue in my area. Why applying urea to a plant at flowering stage? Why do people apply urea to fruity veggies like tomatoes and pepper? I think Urea is best for stuffs like amaranths, jute leaves, ugu and the likes. Manure with other inorganics like pot nitrate, NPK and DAP should provide the needed nitrogen. |
