yemdogg:
I encourage you to apply. Generally speaking graduating with a 2:1 improves chances of admission. buh i will tell you this, people with a gpa of 4.0 have been refused admissions in the past and people with 2:2 have been admitted.

it all depends on the nature of your program. is it an intensive thesis MA or just course work?

if it is an intensive thesis based MA, then you really need to work hard and clinically on your supporting documents e.g research proposal, statement of intent and recommendation letters.

The truth is your gpa only shows that you meet their requirement and doesnt guarantee admission (This is always stated on the program website), because hundreds of applicants also meet their requirement too, buh what seperate you from other applicants is just the cogency of the overview of your application. In determining this, the graduate admissions committee would consider the following factors;

how compelling is your story ? what are your achievements? what are your professors/referees/ saying about you?
how sound, realistic and practicable is your research proposal? what is your inspiration, motivation for the program? what are your preparations to undertake a graduate program?

A friend of mine was recently admitted into the uOttawa with a cgpa lesser than 3.0/5.0 in the same vien, another friend who had a cgpa of 4.1 was rejected admission for the same program. so you see, securing admission isnt just about your GPA. don't get me wrong ma, i am not discouraging people from working hard to attain high gpa, i am only saying that those who graduated with a low gpa should work very hard on their application particularly the supporting documents.

Your GPA is not bad. despite the fact the schools you have chosen require 70% in the last two years of study, you can still secure your admission, just ensure to tell a compelling story in your statement of intent. particularly why you had bad grades in some semesters.

Ensure to follow up on your recommendation letters, ensure that he who write your recommendation write a very sound, genuine and captivating recommendation letter. Nigerian lecturers/professors are very terrible at this.

Pls do submit your application and be positive about the outcome. Ensure to apply to at least 2-3 schools to improve chances of admission.

If you're going for a course-work masters then worry less. Admission for Thesis masters is quite challenging and that is why it is usually accompanied with funding/fellowship/scholarship.

While course-work masters don't usually attract funding.. So if you're doubtful about your academic profile you could target course-work based masters. Your chances of admission is higher compared to thesis based masters.

Mind you some schools place incredible emphasis on GPA.

I stand to be corrected anyway.

I wish you best of luck.
@Yemdogg, thanks so much for the detailed explanation. Quite insightful. God bless you real good

Sorry for the delay Mikymiko, it's not over, till its over.

Good morning everyone. I'm trying to apply for MA psychology in University of Regina, University of Saskatchewan and a couple of others, but I observed they all emphasize at least 70% in last 2 sessions. My overall average is 3.58(71%), while my last 2 sessions is 3.4 (68%). So it turns out that my best grades are in my first 2 sessions. Do I stand a chance of being admitted based on my overall grade of 71% or it strictly has to be in d last 2 sessions? Has anyone been in same situation and still ends up being offered admission?

Hello great Nairaland fam,
I'm really glad coming across such a useful thread as this. I wish I had discovered this earlier. God bless all the wonderful contributors here.
Pls house, I need some clarifications concerning my Canada educational pursuit:
1) In 2013, I got an offer of admission from Centennial college(PGD human resources). I applied for TRV in September of same year, but my application was denied December ending (reasons: insufficient fund and purpose of visit). I used an agent who turned out to know next to nothing about Canadian visa n stuffs. I didn't bother to reapply immediately.
2) I was working with an embassy when I applied, the embassy gave me intro letter as well. To cut long story short, the embassy didn't renew my contract for the following year 2014, thinking that my application will pull thru and would leave in January (most embassies renew staff contract yearly). That was how I lost my job.
In order not to stay idle, I started an MSC program(forensic psychology) which was a full time program.First degree is in psychology as well. However, due to Nigerian educational factors, d program has been prolonged for far too long, September 2014 till now, yet to do thesis defence, don't even know when we'll be called to do that.
I have since decided to process another admission in Canada, a masters program this time around, against 2017 fall (bsc grade is second class upper). Considering my visa denial history, I don't know which course I can go for th

I have since decided to process another admission in Canada, a masters program this time around, against 2017 fall (bsc grade is second class upper). Considering my visa denial history, I don't know which course I can go fort'll convince the vo ds time around. All d schls I've checked so far have either passed admission deadlines (DEC 1) or have too many stringent requirements that are practically impossible to be met before their various deadlines. Such requirements include, IELTS, GRE(for the psychology courses I checked).

However, I checked Brandon University, their admission process seems to be less rigorous, but the closest course to my undergrad course is Masters in Education. Do you think I stand a chance with the vo if I get admitted into d MEd program?
My other consideration is masters in social work. Pls whoever has an idea of schools I can apply to should help me out, as well as advice concerning the course in which I stand the best chance of getting visa.

My husband is my sole sponsor as I am not working presently. My plan is to also pay tuition fees in advance.

Sorry for my long epistle, pls help a confused sis. God bless you all as you take your time to respond.

Well prior to my journey, I used Western Union and Moneygram to send cash to my friend here in Houston. Used Access Bank. I under U can only do a total of 1k in a quarter or N328k.I did one in my name and another in my hubby 's name. In total I was able to send about 1880 dollars at approx at the rate of 365.5 including charges. All you need to do is fill out the form and have someone to pick cash from the other side.
@BeckyU, thanks a lot for the useful info. One more thing pls, can I do it at any bank or it has to be with the ones I have acct with?

Hello Nairalanders.
Pls I need information about western union or moneygram. What's the minimum amount I can send? I also understand that the rates are different across banks, which banks have the most reasonable rates?
Thanks for your help.
