Good afternoon. This piece has been a long time coming I'd say. Have been restraining myself from doing this because emotions are at fever pitch at the moment but somehow I reckon if I don't do it today I might never get to do it. Moreso, today's news reports made it all the more imperative to ask some pertinent questions, and perhaps attempt to answer others. Every opinion herein are strictly the writer's. Before I go on, I'd like to express my deepest sympathies to all those affected one way or the other by the recent incidences of violence in various parts of the country especially the Middle Belt and the South East. My sincere prayers are with you all. Life is simply too precious to be snuffed out of innocent people just like that. I hope and pray the perpetrators of these heinous acts of terrorism are apprehended and dealt with accordingly. Now, since we've dispensed of the necessary preamble, let's get to the meat of the matter as captioned in the title. Besides the e-uproar over Tiwa and her family issues, there's no gainsaying Fulani Herdsmen has been the word trending online, and to some extent even on the main street. A first timer on earth who happens to stop by Nigeria at this time would think it is some local slang used within political circles- but in reality, it has come to be seen as the greatest problem confronting our dear country- no thanks to our press!! Growing up as a child, I had my first "conscious" encounter with the Fulanis (take note, I didn't say "herdsmen" somewhere within our residential neighbourhood. Before that encounter, anytime we saw them, easily identifiable by their dressings, facial appearance and long braided hairs, we never hesitated to take to our heels because we were told they turn kids to sheep- especially during Christmas season!! We rarely saw them but whenever we did, it was always one heart stopping terrifying experience.... until that fateful day.We were playing football at a neighbour's. Someone mistakenly kicks it over the fence. I run out to retrieve it and right in front of me stood some lanky dude wearing rubber shoes that looked like football boots, braided hair, very light skinned in an armless shirt with a little embroidery here and there. He had our precious ball cradled in his hands with them stretched forth as if to hand it back over. I froze in my stride, indecisive- a part of me screamed RUN while another subtly egged me to collect it and walk back- I listened to the counsel of the latter voice. It was the BRAVEST thing I did as a kid!! I simply collected the ball, politely thanked him as he nodded his acknowledgement, then I walked away alive and as a human against all previously held beliefs!! ![]() As I grew older, it became apparent what we believed about the Fulanis was nothing but a childish myth. At some point after we've lost all traces of innocence, we started admiring their women as we patronised them for their "nunu", making suggestive jokes with them. Some of their teens walked about bare chested revealing every damn thing from their waist up as some of us admired the great works of nature lustfully, hoping one day, one would get a chance to handle them. The myth about the Fulanis was completely obliterated. Today, so much water has passed under the bridge. Alliances have been built and shattered. Trust has given way to utter suspicion. Friends have become sworn enemies. Babies are being snatched away from their cradle of innocence and imbued with the spirit of hatred and intolerance. Malleable lies are being prepared by the second and fed to a ravenous public which already seems to be suffering from obesity from too much of its consumption- this lethal cocktail is being prepared and served chill by no one else than the Nigerian Press! When I look at the recent events as they succeed each other with such rapid succession, what I see is some working frantically to reinvent that childhood myth for some yet-to-be-specified purpose, and they have a deadline! Let us make some things crystal clear at this point: (A) Not ALL herdsmen are Fulanis! (B) Not ALL herds of cattle are owned by Fulanis! (C) Not ALL herds of cattle are owned by the cattle herder. Some of them are purely hired hands working for some big shot, perhaps a politician. Cattle rearing is a hugely profitable business. It is important that we distinguished these facts because of the torrent of misinformation that is being disseminated to the public. This said, one then wonders: is the press oblivious of these facts?? Why are they always quick to use the term "Fulani herdsmen"?? How did they get to know alleged attackers were Fulani herdsmen and not herdsmen of some other tribe?? Did they get to interview the attackers before arriving at that conclusion ![]() If they don't get such info from the culprits themselves, would it be illogical if one asks the question: is there a grand conspiracy to criminalise Fulanis?? I have come across SEVERAL herdsmen in my life and I say this with every ounce of honestly and responsibility in me: I have NEVER seen herdsmen bearing AK-47s my whole life. There are two pictures of herdsmen bearing automatic weapons that have been circulating the web, they (pics) are as old as I can remember and I have seen them a thousand times in the past. But with these recent incidents, they resurfaced and are being used to taint both herdsmen and the President as people ask why should Buhari allow them bear arms- is it because they are Fulanis?? Two days after the Enugu incident, another similar incident was reported by Daily trust (I think). The title was boldly captioned "Another Fulani herdsmen attack in Enugu" but within that same story, under that same headline, the same writer/reporter said it was just a scare and nothing happened!!! If it was "just a scare" and "nothing happened", why did they still go ahead to run the story with such a headline??!! Edit:Today, 02/05/2016, Vanguard is reporting an imminent attack as "Fulani herdsmen are massing at some remote part of Enugu to launch another attack on the community attacked last week due to the high success rate (deaths) recorded in the last", and folks seem to have swallowed the story hook, line and sinker with NO QUESTIONS asked- save for a few posters like Modath! From the story as published by vanguard, shouldn't one ask: I. Where did Vanguard get her information?? II. Has this information been shared with the security agencies?? III. Have the people at vanguard privy to the location where the "Fulanis" are massing to "re-launch an attack" offered to take the security personnel to location so the "murderers" can be rounded up and taken into custody?? IV. When "Fulanis" are sighted gathering together, does it mean they are "planning to attack and kill people?? V. How is Vanguard sure the people seen there (if the report is anything to go by) are Fulanis?? VI. Doesn't the report read like it is already preparing the minds of people as to whom to blame when Vanguard's "Fulanis" eventually launch an attack?? VII. Most importantly, doesn't it prick the mind THIS REPORT MIGHT BE MEANT JUST TO CREATE A DIVERSION FOR SECURITY PERSONNEL DEPLOYED IN THE ENTIRE AREA SO SOFT TARGET BEING WATCHED COULD BECOME EASY PICKINGS FOR WHOEVER IT IS THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MADNESS!!?? Aren't these questions worth asking knowing vanguard's position especially as regards events concerning SE Nigeria?? Are we meant to all at once jettison reason and logic based on mundane sentiments even though we understand what a pluralistic society we live in with as many divergent interests as our faces. Think about that people. At this juncture, a few nairaland threads are worthy of mention: 1. www.nairaland.com/3075767/delta-monarch-gives-fulani-herdsmen 2. www.nairaland.com/3079408/fulani-herdsmen-enter-abuja-farm 3. www.nairaland.com/3079244/enugu-massacre-northern-govs-under 4. www.nairaland.com/3077851/it-insult-label-fulanis-criminals Now, when you go through the contents of these threads with a clear unbiased mind, you cannot but wonder: what is really going on?? @ 1. Is the order of expulsion of "Fulani herdsmen" by the Delta Monarch appropriate?? If one were to predicate such decisions on the logic of this monarch, can we then say it is appropriate ALL Hausa mechanics be expelled from, say, Benue state because one or two or three of them killed an Idoma boy?? Think about that. @ 2. A twitter user posted a picture allegedly showing cattle grazing on a piece of cultivated farmland and boldly captioned it Fulanis in Abuja! How did the user know they were "Fulanis" I was disappointed when some opposition posters couldn't raise that question.@ 3. The 19 northern governors came under criticism yesterday over their position that the Fulani should not be labelled as criminals.Someone tell me in all honesty, what is wrong with the position taken by the governors who are essentially asking that all Fulanis shouldn't be labelled as criminals?? Memories of how some Nigerians reacted when it was alleged the president called us all "criminals" are still fresh on or minds. What difference is there in the position taken by the governors regarding Fulanis and the position taken then by Nigerians regarding the president's alleged statement ![]() @ 4. The Sultanate was just reiterating the position of the Northern governors. When one puts all these together, a sinister pattern starts to form and it is very obvious. The public is being programmed towards arriving at a pre-arranged destination and how fast they are sprinting towards it!! The people this writer suspects were behind the viscous attacks on the president over Boko Haram insurgency before the elections, desperate to taint his image by tagging him a sponsor, might have re-emerged out of the woodworks to sell another dummy to the public since the war in the North East is largely being won to his (Buhari's) credit. 1. They want people to still believe Buhari is an ethnic/religious fundamentalist and that explains why there's been an "upsurge" in incidences of "Fulani" attacks after he became president. 2. They want to dull the most visible sheen of his admin since ground work is still being laid to confront the economy itself as things don't seem to be working presently. Someone says: “It is indeed absurd and most unfortunate that certain groups of people ascribe the incidence on ethnic and/or religious premise and to whimsically apportion blame in order to batter the gradual restoration of peace and security in Nigeria”..and I totally agree with them! Whose purpose is the press serving?? I urge us all to take a few steps back to examine the emerging portrait on this giant canvas- it always makes more meaning when we do. I am a half middle belt, half South South man. I'm an unapologetic fan of Nigeria's president and I love my country than you can ever imagine. #ThinkNigerians!! Thank you all. cc: Seun, Lalasticlala, Mynd44.Ps: I expect a lot of insults from this as what I just did challenges and runs afoul of what is seemingly currently generally acceptable which is that "Fulanis are demons". But as I've shown time and time again, insults won't deter from doing what my conscience tells me is the right thing to do. Some will be ignored while others will be reported to the mods. God bless you all. |
modath:So terrible what these guys are doing. Gosh. |
Babacele:Imagine someone getting pissed because I exposed an obvious lie. Imagine her hoping "no one is left in Agatu by 2019" so she(?) could have something to hinge her(?) misplaced hatred on. How could one transform themselves into such beastly creatures devoid of humanity simply because of politics. The death she wishes the people of Agatu would visit only her and her family. Who the hell even told these people I'm from Agatu?? I posted the original picture of an obviously photoshoped version created to malign the person of the president and the next thing someone could do is question why in trying to "sell an inept" president- to her, the lie is totally in order and must not be challenge! Are these people humans at all?? @ Mynd44. You should locate this thread, take it down and sanction the op for a gross violation of Rule 8. www.nairaland.com/3080968/islamization-nigeria-a-huge-possibility |
Evathyst:What the heck is the meaning of this. I called out an obvious lie with irrefutable evidence and all you could say I'd "don't I get bored of selling an inept government"?? So because the government is "inept", it should be lied against, and no one should question the lie. Do you have a conscience at all?? Didn't the poster LIE?? Doesn't that matter to you?? Would you feel this same way if you or your loved one are lied against?? Why are you people like this?? |

@ Midolian, Fulanimafia: I can't post on the politics section right now so I'd like one of you o do this. There's a thread by one Tryna.0936 www.nairaland.com/3080968/islamization-nigeria-a-huge-possibility that would soon be taken over by his fellow religious scaremongers. These people would rest at nothing until people of all religion different from theirs are seen as threats. At the end of the thread is a picture of Assange holding a newspaper with a caption "For those who know who Julian Assange is. For those who love freedom to worship and democracy". The moment I saw the picture, I knew something was wrong with it and hence the entire thread: Here's the real version of that picture and I egg you to upload it unto the thread. If you can't download it through this post, simply google "Julian Assange holding a guardian newspaper" and you'd get it. Thanks. Cc: Modath, Babacele, Jarus.

@ Fynestboi, ijebabe, MissyB3. I'd be glad if this is moved to the politics section. Cc: Mynd44, OAM4J. @ Lalasticlala, Seun: I think this deserves more fp to balance the argument regarding this trend. Thank you. |
@ Midolian, I just couldn't comment on that CBN cattle thread because it had ran a couple of pages before I saw it, the damage had already been done on the thread. I don't think it was even a photoshop- it was simply a disgusting evidence of how we've some people, for reason of an electoral defeat, have allowed hatred to dismember their conscience! Hell, is cattle moving on our streets (much as it is wrong) a new thing?? How twisted are the minds of some people to think the are cattle passing in front of CBN because a Fulani man is today the president?? That is totally preposterous. We've had some incidences of near collisions between cattle and aircraft on runways in the past and people took them for what they were- an accident luckily avoided. Imagine the image that would be painted if that happens today!!! I see some bold caption like Fulani Herdsmen take over airports in Southern Nigeria!!! Can't people see the pattern that is forming here?? Jeez. |
OgbeifunErom:That is a valid suspicion. A very fake painting is taking shape here and if Nigerians don't wake up soon enough and put on their thinking caps, they just might buy some very fake Last Supper thinking they bought the real Leonardo's. |
Bitterleafsoup:Have you been in ANY of the attacks to know they are Fulanis ![]() |
whirlwind7:I will attempt to respond to each of your paragraphs one at a time. @1. From the very beginning, I stated the article is entirely my idea/opinion and of course no one is bound by it, just as no one is bound by yours. So pointing that out is totally unnecessary. @2. Granted, I have no facts to prove the herdsmen are Fulanis, but that is just as much as people who see herdsmen and call them Fulanis don't. That is why I admonish "open-mindedness" in "labelling" them. The press who refer to the herdsmen as "Fulanis" show us no "facts" they are as they don't interview them or inquire from them their tribe. What fact did the twitter user have when he said "Fulanis in Abuja" on seeing the cattle?? Did he ask the herders their tribe and they responded that they are Fulanis?? Where is his "fact"?? That is the problem. @3. Do I have to own a farmland or lost a family member to have an opinion on the burning issue?? How many people with their diverse opinions about it have farmlands or have had their family member killed in any of the incidences?? I have sufficient knowledge from reports I've read and eye witness accounts to form an opinion- that is what "I believe" 95% of commentators on this issue have to go by. I doubt even you having an opinion have had a family member killed or have a farmland that has been ravaged by cattle. Furthermore, marks of hooves and dung are indeed "telltale" signs of nomadic herding activity but it isn't a confirmation that Fulani herdsmen were there! It all still boils down to the ethnic profiling I'm strongly against. That a thief robbed some bank in a black tinted Ford Escape doesn't make me a thief if I drive a black tinted Ford Escape! @4. See the way you wrote "just because they uncovered graves with victims suspected to be Fulanis" as though it doesn't matter. I remember how one poster was almost mobbed here because he used the words "just because six people died...." when describing what happened in Enugu!! Are some people's lives more precious than others?? In Agatu, troops have been deployed with a promise by the government to do all within it's powers to bring the perpetrators of the barbaric incident to justice. The circumstances are different- the first case is maintenance of security while the other (mass grave discovery) is strictly investigative- hence the divergent approach. So for you to say "this same agents didn't bat an eyelid" is just pandering to the emotions of those who can't analyse issues dispassionately. @5. You say "many" of their kidnap victims say they are Fulanis?? First, who are the "many" victims here that said they are Fulanis?? Since when did kidnapping become a regular "business" of Fulanis?? Do you know nearly 100% of Nigerians, including myself, who are neither Hausa nor Fulani can't distinguish between both tribes, which is why they are just about all the time of the time referred to as Hausa Fulani people?? What if they are Hausa or even Kanuri?? Who knows?? @6. Divergence of opinions is not an exclusive trait of people in the South. Come on, you are taking your exaggeration too far. The governors have said they are NOT Fulanis just as the press with no evidence have said they ARE Fulanis. You think if one of the attackers had been caught and an interview with him televised and published, they would have had the guts to make the statement The absence of EVIDENCE here is the problem.@7. Nomadic Pastoralism didn't originate from Fulanis. The Egyptians had long practised it way before the Fulanis even thought about it, ditto Ethiopians. Are Fulanis the dominant players in Nigeria?- yes. Are they the only players?- certainly not. This means there is a chance that some of the thing we attribute to them might actually not have been done by them. @8. Allow me to worry about that bro. At least, I know I'd never carry weapons for any damn politician like some degenerate thug only to put my life in harm's way. Furthermore, you say "no one needs my analysis" simply because the Western Media says blablabla.. Wow!! I didn't know the western media is flawless!! Are you kidding me? Okay, let me guess, since they analysed some past president of the country and tagged him with some unpalatable name (remember Ineffectual Buffoon), would you also say they are totally right and no one else's opinion is needed?? Didn't the West say Nigeria wouldn't see 2015?? What's the date on your own calender?? Come on dude!! @9. You know, I had an interesting idea I wanted to share about the grazing bill. Igbos for instance are known to be adept at commerce. Give them a cent today and they give you a dollar the next day. I was thinking, instead of getting too emotional about the bill trying to put it down with an emotional "they are attempting to take our lands" wail, why don't we suggest that areas across the country be specifically earmarked for Igbos to build shops and carry out their commerce?? . Think about it, if NASS rejects such a proposal, then they wouldn't even have the moral right to contemplate a grazing bill- and that cleverly KILLS IT without much noise- simple. We need to be smart about these things. @10. I agree with most of the points you raised here. But it somehow reminds me of a movie I once watched about a serial killer. All evidence about him had been gathered, he'd been caught, tried, found guilty under the weight of overwhelming evidence, and thrown in jail- couple of days later, the signature murders continued!!! Who is then the murderer!!?? Have a lovely sunday. |
I know the thread would be flooded with visceral insults/comments by day break. That I can understand since emotions are running very high at the moment- but be sure not to let the mods see the comments. @ Mynd44, @ OAM4J: Please, I'd be glad if this thread can be moved to its rightful place. Thanks. Cc: Modath, Midolian, GogetterMD, ObinnaIzuora, Fulanimafia, Greenpasture, NgeneUkwenu, Aresa, Fiizznation, et al. |

PIPPROF:Many eediots who couldn't stomach the shame of electoral defeat deactivated theirs only to come back under some unknown monikers, quoting and throwing jabs at members. Bigger eediots threatened fire and brimestone when Rule 9 was modified, that they would deactivate their accounts and never come back to nairaland. They deactivated only to find out how mighty boring their was, re-registered on nairaland.com and even created many more alternate IDs. What manner of mighty eediots do that my friend?? |
PIPPROF:See as dem be. What the fvck has herdsmen killing got to do with this thread? Don't you guys ever have any point to make whenever Omenka posts a comment besides "Agatu" and "Fulani herdsmen are killing your people blablabla.."?? Na wa oo. Dem do una abi wetin ![]() Fools thought the illiterate would never become the president, yet today, he's their president and the president of their mothers and fathers. The fools should deal with that and stop whining like spoilt little babies. |
ObinnaIzuora:I don't think so. He'd come back to tell me about Agatu. Isn't that all they do?? |
Bolade005:You regret campaigning for someone struggling to fix the rot occasioned by sixteen long years of savage misrule even though he's not spent up to 8% of the time it took to cause the damage, even under nearly 50% drop in government's revenue (caused by the decline in international oil price). Regret you may, and you have the right to, but some of us don't and remain very hopeful that things will take a turn for the best before the twilight of Baba's first term. If I could endure the last 6years, I see no reason why I can't ![]() |
onatisi:It is called "mistakes" and no one is above except God. |
OlandoOwoo:Ok, no vex oo. I be Idoma. Oya, go play with sansan mr Hugely Gifted Upstairs.. ![]() |
Sunnynwa:You who gives a trillion fvcks about it, come and get it na? What a frustrated lot. ![]() President- Nada. VP- Nada. National chairman- Nada. Yet they "give a trillion fvcks about the possibility". ![]() Abeg make una carry una suffahead comot for my face jor. No be me cause una problem. |
Saintp:Okay, granted, you make a good point. You'd agree with me that some of these nuances were "birthed" just after the elections with these guys making it seem like they are hell bent on seeing the president fail. People have an inalienable right to criticise/hate/oppose the president- hell, democracy wouldn't be worth its name without an opposition. Much as I didn't like Jonathan and opposed his actions, I NEVER ONCE prayed he failed because if he does, I knew people like myself'd be at the receiving end of the result of his failure while he goes ahead to enjoy his life. But today, you see some people shamelessly saying they desire to see Nigeria burn and the President fail woefully on this forum! That is what I find disgusting. |
Sunnynwa:Do I look like I've ever given a fvck whether the president is a Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Tiv, Jukun, Igede, Idoma, Fulani, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Langtan, Ibibio, Kanuri, Fulani, Etulo or whatever?? Una wey dey carry tribal politics for head na him d tin go dey worry. |
iflywithbuhari:Yet you people call the Yorubas "slaves". You see your life?? ![]() ![]() ![]() |
People say dem want their own country tomorrow, this one dey ration naija presidential ticket to them for, wait for it, 2027!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
@Noethnicity: Dude I understand your points perfectly but I think there is a dark side of this whole stuff which the public isn't yet aware of. I am half Middle Belt and half South South and insist there are some elements trying desperately to derail this government, leveraging on the Fulani attacks to achieve that goal simply because: 1. They are terrified if measures are not taken and the government sustains it's anticorruption drive, it would be just a matter of time before they get caught up in the dragnet. 2. Some people had put all their eggs in one basket and lost them woefully with the outcome of the election. They feel the best way to have at least a foot in the corridor of power is to create such massive chaos the government would have no choice but to invite them to dinner. 3. Some people are simply ethnoreligious bigots and sadists and can't live with the fact that a Fulani Muslim is ruling them against all odds. Now, are these attacks new? The answer is NO. Are they just becoming more prevalent in the South (as you said) under the current govt? The answer is also NO. Are all herdsmen killers? NO. Are some herdsmen killers?? Absolutely. Are all herdsmen Fulanis? NO!! Now, have you wondered why in all these melee one word that has been featuring prominently is "Fulani Herdsmen". The video allegedly showing some armed men crossing a river in Benue state featured NO cow, yet people tagged them "Fulani herdsmen"!! Don't you wonder why?? How can you be sure some people didn't commission some idi¤ts to carry out these attacks?? Lastly ask yourself this: why is it so damn difficult for some people to imagine for a split second Southerners are themselves responsible for these just to taint the president when they insisted in the preceding admin that Northerners are the ones sponsoring the killings of their own brothers just to taint Jonathan?? There are soooo many things I'd like to say about this, perhaps on a dedicated thread but I've yet to find the strength in my fingers. I think there are things we don't know yet. |
Fani Fvcktard Kayode- are all Fulanis criminals ![]() |
mightyhazell:See them... Typical. What a pity. |
youngeagle:I'm very sure if Baba "sits down" to work, you'd be among the first people to bring us news from trentonline or breakingtimes that he's been stricken with stroke and can't even move around anymore. The "masses'' are pleased with his agenda of chasing crooks everywhere they go. If you and your likes aren't comfortable with that, go buy citizenship elsewhere so you can stop worrying about what happens in Nigeria. |
