Politics / Mega Political Party To Salvage Nigeria From All The Clutches Of The Elite by OneNaija(m): 11:27am On Oct 31, 2009
This is a real powerful movement, even if they are unsuccessful they will at least alleviate the damage being done by the People's "Democratic" Party.

Nigeria needs change, say new party promoters
From Alifa Daniel, Asst Political Editor, Abuja

Quote:
THE need to snatch the nation from the precipice was yesterday stressed by the National Democratic Initiative (NDI), whose leaders are expected to meet in Abuja today with the possibility of metamorphosing into a new political party, the National Democratic Movement (NDM).

At a media briefing yesterday in Abuja, Spokesmen of the NDI, Alhaji Sule Hamma of The Buhari Organisation (TBO); National Secretary, Action Congress (AC) Dr. Usman Bugaje; and Senator Lawali Shuaibu of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), disclosed that 72 politicians from across the six geo-political have been invited for the meeting.

Hamman said: "The NDI leaders (Gen. Mohammed Buhari, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Sokoto Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa) have come to the realisation that if the elites in this country continue to remain lethargic and selfish, then the geographical territory of Nigeria may disappear, which means that Nigeria can disintegrate in line with projections by some Western Intelligence.

"We at the NDI have accepted the burden of creating the process of National Dialogue that will establish a national consensus and create a viable process which we can all together salvage this country."

However, citing strategic and security reasons, the NDI spokesmen declined to disclose the venue of the proposed meeting.

But Hamman said former Presidential Candidate, Chief Olu Falae, erstwhile Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, ex-Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, Senator Ben Obi and Mike Ahamba (SAN), among others, were expected at the meeting

Another source said Chief Ralph Obioha and Chief Ogbonaya Onu were listed as two of the prominent persons coming from the South-East geopolitical zone.

It was unclear last night if the two leaders of the Group of 21 (G21), former Senate President Ken Nnamani and former Speaker Aminu Bello Masari would honour the invitation reportedly sent to them.

The G21 was set up by aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwarts a few years ago to push for internal democracy within the party. However, it has been quiet recently following what an insider said was an infiltration of the group. At least three of its members are known to hold ministerial positions.

Hamma said the persons were invited in their personal capacity as men and women of integrity rather than the parties they belonged to.

Asked if the NDI would evolve into a political party as has been speculated, Hamma said it was left to the men and women who would meet today, stressing that the NDI was all inclusive and would accept anyone or organisation that believed in responsive and responsible democracy.

He said the meeting of the politicians was aimed at preventing the country from imminent collapse because of the "decadent, bankrupt political group" governing the country.

Nigeria, according to him has only its geographical entity in place while others like effective and credible leadership and organized system of management are missing.

His words: "The popular notion of events in this country is that the nation is sliding to decadence, bankruptcy of ideas, incompetence in administration, imminent possibility and now probability of collapse as a state.'

"This is so because every modern nation state is clearly underpinned by three elements one, an effective, legitimate, credible and competent government and authority that is capable of managing the environment, allocating resources, resolving conflict and generating development and hope.

"Two, a system or an organised method in which public affairs are conducted and managed on the basis of the Constitution, the law, the tradition and faith of the people in that particular territory.

"Three, the geographical territory. Of the three today, Nigeria can only speak of one, which is the geographical territory. It is our contention that there is no legitimate, effective, constant and competent credible administration in the country that is able to exercise authority creditably in the country.

"It is also our contention that there is no credible system that is capable of organising and managing social and community relationships, administration of justice and predictable relationships between the masses and the government of the day not to talk of its ability to interact with countries of similar standing within the comity of nations.

"So, the only thing that remains is the geographical territory of Nigeria and no wonder, therefore, many people in the world today consider Nigeria as a failed State."

Hamman added: "We fear that if the elites in this country continue to remain lethargic, greedy, selfish and uninterested in the future of their country, then by 2011 the geographical territory of Nigeria may disappear by itself and that is to say Nigeria may disintegrate which is basically the focus within international circles and within intelligence community internationally."

"So we in the National Democratic Initiative have accepted the burden and challenge of history at this point in time to create a process of national consultation with a view to establishing consensus and a viable and credible process through which we can all salvage our country.

"We have no doubt in our mind that this is part of series of efforts by various organisations, individuals and communities in the country but our own we believe is one that is matched by no other.

"These twelve persons that have been identified from each geopolitical zone of the country are people who have been identified on the basis of their political and social standing, political perspectives, commitment to community and national efforts and their capacity and willingness to be partners and members of an effort this nature.

"So, we scheduled a meeting for tomorrow (today) to consider issues regarding the way forward in terms of creating a level of understanding and commitment to the process, the concept and the reality of liberating Nigeria from this bankrupt decadent political group."

They need to be strong, true Nigerians will have their support.

Romance / 10 Reasons Why Guys Dump Girls by OneNaija(m): 2:34pm On Oct 04, 2009
One of Us Was Too Serious: This could be as simple as she wanted to see me three times a week, and I only wanted to see her once a week. If she's flirting with other guys, flighty, or not as into it as I am, then I'm too serious for her.

Burnout: I'm a big believer in pacing and rhythm in dating. A relationship can suffer burnout if certain milestones occur too fast: Being exclusive, sex, meeting parents. When that happens, I get that feeling the colonists must have gotten after they won the Revolutionary War: "Ok, we did it, so now what?"

I Was Tempted To Cheat: I do my best not to cheat, so when I have recurring urges to cheat on my girlfriend, I figure it's time to break up with her. I don't need to go through with cheating; the constant urge is enough for me to end things.

All My Friends Broke Up With Their Girlfriends: This is by far the most immature reason on this list. While my girlfriend and I are curled up on the couch watching "The Devil Wears Prada," my newly single guy friends are out shredding the karaoke waves with Journey's "Don't Stop Believin" and tearing up the town. That conflict gives me wanderlust. It's much easier when we are all in for a quiet Saturday night with the significant others.

Divergent Lives: If someone moves to another town, or work is taking over, or other life changes are driving you apart, sometimes it's best to end it.

Feeling Selfish: Dating is selfless because you're giving your time and yourself up to a relationship. "Me time" is necessary at some point to work on career/living situation, travel, or whatever. When I'm in a "selfish period," it's tough to participate in a relationship.

I "Misread" My Feelings: This is the most unfair of all the reasons. Both genders make this mistake—you get into a relationship and everything seems so great. Then, a few weeks later, you realize you got wrapped up in something for the wrong reason, dated for the sake of dating, or whatever, and you need to get out.

My Friends Or Family Didn't Like Her: I pay close attention to friend/family opinions because they know me best, and they've earned the right to have their say. Also, friends and family may be able to see things inside the relationship that I'm too blinded to see.

I Took Her For Granted: Great relationships should be easy, but there has to be some tension too—especially in the beginning. If it's too easy, there's a lack of challenge. If I feel like I could have her heart any time any place, sometimes I'll let her go. This almost always ends up coming back to haunt me later, though. I never learn.

She Was Too Negative: All too often, I end up with the brooding, depressed, uptight type who is constantly complaining. I don't expect someone to be happy all the time, but if she makes me unhappy every time I see her, why stay with her?

What reasons have guys used to break up with you, and which make you most angry? What reasons have caused you to break up with guys? Which reasons do you think are the most common cause of breakups- do they differ for guys and women?

Saudi King Writes Yar’adua’s Nigeria At 49

By Prince Charles Dickson, Minna

In the name of God, the Beneficent and Merciful.

Your Excellency, the President of Nigeria.

Peace and the mercy and blessings of God be with you.

Dear Umoru Yar’adua

First congratulations on your nation’s 49th Independence Day Celebrations, I am writing you this letter on behalf of the loving people of Saudi Arabia and myself.

I need not emphasis to you the place of theKingdom of Saudi Arabia, not just on you as a person but the fact that we represent the ground for billions of faithful and peace-seeking Muslims.

The next few lines I pen to you would be painful—the reason being that it is the truth and I dare say, you and I know that the truth hurts. I have been told and warned by my kinsmen that I am not saying anything new but I will still say it.

Let me start with your recent visit to my domain. Your countrymen are sickened and cannot fathom the reason why you would abandon the UN General Assembly for the second time just to come for a University commissioning.

As it regards that I will skip for now. Do you know reasons why you were welcomed by a governor…well let us leave that to local gossip?

Your absence is sad because it is one of the many reasons that you and your countrymen and women are not taken serious. If you recall early in the year you had complained to them and the world that it was unfortunate that the world did not reckon with you and your nation during the G-8 summit in London.

Here was an opportunity to try and remedy the serious image problems you have with other nations by confronting their leaders face to face. This I think you missed…and your citizens I believe feel same.

You told me that you minister for foreign affairs would handle the UN but I disagree with you. The minister I am told flew to the US from Brazil where he had gone for negotiations on how the nation can achieve the 6,000MW power generation by December.

It is sad that at 49 years and with a population of approximately 150milliion you are still battling with generating a mere 6,000 MGW. I gathered that no part of Nigeria has a one-hour uninterrupted power supply for a seven-day week.

Since your assumption of office you have been on hijra to my domain on three occasions and this excludes the hajj you have come to perform. Can’t recall when we suffered apower outage last.

One of your revered writers a certain Wole Soyinka's said that "the man (Yar'Adua) is on permanent sabbatical". "… A permanent sabbatical from critical national duty,”.

This I see as an insult because no one in my domain dares insinuate that of me. Your nation is adrift and all is not well and citizenry do not see any concerted effort at solving these issues.

You came to commission a university, and mysteriously some 90 public universities are shut down in your country. Most of your states are battling with primary school teachers’ strike.

At 49 years you do not have a University in the top 1000 Universities listing, none of your public schools can be certified as first class. And I hear that most of your lieutenants are products of these schools that you and past governments have allowed to decay.

On your other visits, you have been treated and attended to by some of the best the medical field has to offer in my domain, and each time I wonder to myself…why can you not build such in your country.

Do you think if I was sick I would come to Nigeria for healthcare, .? (subhannallah) Allah forbid that much you know.

I am told that nothing works in your land and despite all the opportunities. You have continued to remain a nation of misplaced priorities and dashed hopes.

The Kingdom of Saudi is faced with its own troubles which are peculiar to us and some problems which you are familiar with. However we continue to tackle them. But I gathered that you are massaging your issues rather than deal with them headlong.

In my domain we deal with corruption too, but be rest assured that our tolerance level is low. We do not hesitate to cut with sword the erring part, hand, eye, or ‘that part of the body’. This results in serioushuman rights questions but we do not murder or assassinate journalists or opposition people either.

Many people I have spoken to from your land say they had hope in you, but that after just two years…they called you go-slow, later it was snail, now they have resigned themselves to fate.

I have my integrity and that of my people to protect; besides it is not in my place to say, yet I will ask. What is the place of your wife in government …is she a feminist, is she the only wife you have? I have no problem with all these but if she is indeed the de-facto president…then there is a problem?

On a scale of preference we have long shifted our attention to the likes ofSouth Africa, Ghana, and Egypt and recently tiny nations like Namibia,Mozambique are not left out.

I do not envy the enormous problems you face but I am saddened that you have not solved any. You have not improved on a faulty electoral system that brought you to power.

Your banking sector we hear just underwent partial oncology but the real cancer is still there.

Some of your elites now build helipads and move around in helicopters in cities like Port Harcourt, Onitsha to avoid kidnap and your roads remain hellish and all we hear is that the Federal and state governments are perpetually engaged on whether it’s a federal or a state road while people die on these roads.

You have at 49 years some of the best brains in various fields but you have not been able to harness their potentials.

There are several policy somersaults by various functionaries of your government and these paints you in bad light. You rule of law mantra has been questioned by the lawlessness of those underneath you and then people find out you are in the know.

Your citizens are suffering loss of appetite, fatigue and memory slip at what best government practices are. Infact I am told that citizens rejoice when government officials do what they are supposed to do because the reverse is the case.

I am even told that there is a phrase used…’the man stole but he worked too’.

Even in hitherto familiar terrain like soccer I hate to say that soon boys from my kingdom will beat your team whether super eagles or gentle doves. I gathered you never plan for anything in your nation anymore and the inevitable happens…you all fail.

I have not proffered any solution to you in this Independence letter, so also have I left out many other issues and my reason is that I do not intend to insult you but awaken you. You have the manpower, the resources. You can if you want to, my fear is, a doubt that you and your people wan to.

Leaders in the past have refused to take counsel and have never bothered about any legacies, I do not know if you want to be any different or will be different. I do not know if you will read this or an aide will browse through it as usual.

Bisalam

King Abdullah bin Abdel-Aziz

NB

As at press time it could not be ascertained if indeed the 85 year old royal father wrote this letter, but the contents are very correct. And our sources say that the Villa is not taking it lightly.

Politics / 2011: Political Tsunami Looms In Nigeria, Says Seer, Warns Yar'adua by OneNaija(m): 9:57am On Sep 07, 2009
THE cycle of political and electoral violence is not likely to end in Nigeria, a major oil-exporting country to the United States of America (USA), even with the expected electoral reform. With the next round of general elections barely 20 months ahead, a renowned seer, Bassey Effiong Orok, has started to warn that all is not well with the country as far as 2011 is concern.

Orok, who also has the gift of prophetic diagnosis, healing and utterances, told senior editors of Journalists for Niger Delta (JODEL), a media group concerned with the affairs of the oil and gas region, at the weekend in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, that President Umaru Yar'Adua, was no longer capable of rescuing Nigeria from the brink of collapse.

According to the seer, ''the Yar'Adua administration is like an expired drug. It is incapable of doing Nigeria any good from May 29, 2011. It has executed its assignment of pushing Chief Olusegun Obasanjo out of the tenancy of Aso Rock (Nigeria's Presidential Villa). It is high time Yar'Adua began to evacuate his personal effects from the villa.''

Continuing, he said, ''God has already started a process of moving Nigeria out of the present ills facing the country. There is going to be a political tsunami in 2011.
advertisement

President Yar' Adua's assignment was to evacuate Obasanjo out of Aso Rock to his Otta farm and nothing else. Now that Yar'Adua has finish his assignment , he has no other business there other than to give way''.

''Nigeria'', he went on, ''is yet to kick start her real demogracy. What has been taking place in the country since May 29, 1999, has been pseudo democracy that has resulted in wasted investment. That is the reason why there will be a U - turn in the current political order, and all politicians who have sto;en this country's till should get ready to vomit them in severe pain and shame''.

Adding, he said, ''all those who were part of the plundering regime from 1999 should get ready to render account of their stewardship. The whistle will soon be blown and all those who have cases to answer would be sent parking because Yar'Adua's administration is an expired drug''.

The seer also had some words for Prof. Maurice Iwu, the chairman of the country's electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to him, ''the days of Iwu and his team at INEC are numbered. They have failed the country's democratic effort''.

In the meantime, Political ,Co-ordinator of the media group, Okon Bassey, had before the interview session with the seer claimed that JODEL was determined to be an active player in processes aimed at bringing about credible democratic order in the oil region.

''As an organisation, we believe that dialogue still remains the best way of resolving conflict like the one that has played out as insurgency in the Niger Delta'', he said.

Politics / Govt Revives Railway Project, Approves N27bn by OneNaija(m): 9:19am On Sep 04, 2009
In a surprising move, the Federal Government has approved N27 billion for the rehabilitation and purchase of railway facilities including new locomotive engines.
Only last year, the $8.3 billion railway modernisation programme awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo was suspended by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.
The government's decision was made known by Transport Minister, Mr. Ibrahim Bio, during a ministerial briefing on Thursday in Abuja.
Government opted for a single standard gauge rail line, following a review of the suspended railway modernisation programme initiated by the Obasanjo government, he revealed.
About N14.3 billion was allocated for the procurement of 25 locomotives engines. N12.8 billion was allotted to facilities and rehabilitation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bio disclosed that the procurement of workshop tools and equipment to re-rail tracks would gulp N400 million, while the rehabilitation of marshalling yards and signals will cost N2 billion.
He said that N620 million will be used to rehabilitate 120 coaches and wagons while N1.3 billion would go to the purchase of three rail cranes.
According to the minister, "the completion of Ajaokuta to Warri line will gulp N6 billion. Construction of station signals and communications for Ajaokuta – Itakpe – Warri rail line will cost N125 million.’’
He said that if there is adequate security in the Niger Delta, 30 per cent of the project is expected to be completed in December.
The plan is to implement the project in stages and on stand-alone basis, bearing in mind availability of funds, he noted.
The first stage will cover Abuja to Kaduna, a distance of 187 kilometres and Lagos to Ibadan, 187 kilometres and the second stage, Minna to Abuja, Minna to Kano and Ibadan to Ilorin.
He disclosed that "the N6 billion owed to Julius Berger has now been paid to enable it to resume and complete the project, which covers a distance of 22 kilometres to the Delta Steel Jetty."
“Julius Berger is currently undertaking aerial survey and mapping of the track, while railway engineers have completed the foot patrol, preparatory to the resumption of work,” Bio added.
The government should have no business in the transport sector, he stated. However, it expects to partner the private sector including individuals and corporate organisations in these projects, he stated.
The deadline for the completion of these projects is June 2010, he said.
Bio stated that President Yar'Adua had directed that the $500 million loan already secured for the project should be accessed. He said the government decided to urgently restore the north/south line to actualise the resumption of train services early next year.
Politics / Carrington Seeks More Power For States In Nigeria by OneNaija(m): 4:43pm On Sep 03, 2009
FORMER United States U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Walter Carrington, says the imbalance in the structure of the Nigerian federation is inimical to its development.

Carrington, alongside some Niger Delta leaders, have also hinged sustainable peace in the oil-rich region on using the wealth of the area to develop it.

The renowned diplomat said the Nigerian Federal Government is "too powerful than the states. Here in the U.S., as powerful as the U.S. national government is, our states have immense powers that states in Nigeria can only dream of."

As America's envoy in the days of the late Gen. Sani Abacha, Carrington openly romanced with the pro-democracy groups, which fought the government over its anti-democratic policies.

He said at a two-day summit organised by the Delta State government in New York that until the basic infrastructure needed to hasten the social and economic development of the Niger Delta were put in place, any other approach to the crisis was merely scratching it on the surface.

On the Nigerian structure, the former envoy said, "for instance, the oil that is drilled from American federal land is not the property of the Federal Government."

Governor of Delta State Emmanuel Uduaghan and Carrington, who led talks at the summit, which ended yesterday, said it was lamentable that Nigeria's potentials had remained untapped.

The summit was convened by the Delta State government to mobilise its indigenes in America to play critical roles in the development of the state.

Tagged: "Delta Diaspora Direct (D3)," the summit was attended by Prof. Joy Ogwu, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), former Information Minister, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire, and Dr. Eloho Otobo, a senior UN official, among others.

Carrington who chaired the event, called for the tapping of the potentials of Nigerians in Diaspora by governments at home.

Although Nigeria has a federal constitution, the Federal Government is too powerful unlike in other federal democracies like the United States where states also have immense power, according to the former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria.

Both Carrington and Uduaghan agreed that while there are problems with Nigeria's federalism and injustice with the way the oil and gas resources are being managed, the role of U.S.-based Nigerians towards developing the country is pivotal.

Carrington said: "Oil belongs to the people on whose land it is found," adding that there are even no drilling for oil allowed in U.S. government-owned property right now and that the American Federal Government only imposes taxes on owners of the land from where oil is drilled.

Citing Texas and Oklahoma states, two oil rich states in the U.S. to buttress his case, he noted that both states made their wealth from oil to the exclusion of the federal authorities.

He said the underlining source of discontent in the Niger Delta is "the failure of successive Federal Governments to use the oil wealth there to develop the area."

Without mentioning the amnesty deal of the Federal Government to militants in the area, Carrington said "peace cannot be sustained in the Niger Delta without confronting the underlining sources of unrest."

Carrington said there is no reason why states like Delta cannot pioneer social progress in Nigeria.

By working with the Nigerian Diaspora, he said much could be done to burnish the country's image. "So, then, Nigeria can become the great country that many of us have waited for it to become."

Continuing his lamentation of the Nigerian situation, Carrington said: "I have bemoaned the fact that the Nigerian potential remains untapped. Nigerians in the U.S. are excelling and there is no immigrant group here in America that can match Nigerian immigrants in accomplishments."

A recent American government report estimates that there are about one million Nigerians in America while over 25,000 U.S. citizens live and work in Nigeria.

Carrington said until the launch of the Delta initiative, no Nigerian government has not matched efforts to harness the resources in the country with the integration of Nigerians abroad.

He said it was a normal thing for nations to call upon their Diaspora for the development of the homeland, citing the Kennedys in Boston, noted for responding to the call of the Irish, even though their forbears left Ireland over a century ago.

Recalling his preparations before he assumed office in Nigeria in 1993, Carrington who attended the summit with his wife, Arese, a Nigerian from Edo State, said: "In 1993, when I went to the Library of Congress before assuming my post to find out about Nigeria - the curator brought out huge volumes." He said the scholarship he encountered in that quest was "impressive."

In his speech, Uduaghan said there can be "no peace without socio-economic and infrastructural development."

He added that all parties to the crisis including the federal and state governments, oil companies and communities, have played one role or the other "to complicate the problems on the ground and so we have our part to play in order to resolve it."

The governor assured the U.S.-based Nigerians that the state government has two boxes under which to deal with the crisis-development and the maintenance of law and order.

He said he would appoint Delta indigenes at the summit as mentors of school in their local councils to involve them in the development of the state.

Uduaghan said there is nobody who cannot contribute something to Nigeria's development, "at least try and visit the land."

He said the state had a mentoring scheme whereby prominent indigenes have a school linked to them.

"They are not required to bring money to build anything, but they must know the principal, the headmaster, communicating with the school, getting to the school, talking with the pupils and just making contact," the governor said.

Sports / Get To Know: Nicky Ajose Play For Manchester United by OneNaija(m): 8:19pm On Sep 01, 2009
Name: Nicky Ajose
Born: Bury
Age: 17
Position: Forward/winger
Strengths: I’m an attacking player and I like to go forward and try to create goals or score goals. I’m quick and I’d like to think I’m quite skilful with good technique.

Ways I can improve: I could be better in the air and defensively. I’ve been working with Paul McGuinness (U18s coach) on heading from crosses, just trying to get the right technique. Improving defensively is about positioning when we haven’t got the ball.

A player at United I admire: Probably Carlos Tevez for his work-rate, which is unbelievable, and Cristiano Ronaldo for his goals from out wide. If we finish training early we go over and watch them train, which is good to learn from them. Paul Scholes is probably the best trainer.

I first got spotted: I got scouted playing for my local team when I was seven, so I’ve been at United for about ten years now.

Life at United: It’s great, it’s like a dream. Going in to play football every day in training is what any football fan would love to do. I’ve come through the age-groups and I just wanting to keep pushing on and see how far I get.

In five years time I’ll be: I’ll be 21 then, and I’d love to be breaking into the United first-team. Ultimately that’s my aim, as well as playing for England or Nigeria. There’s a lot of hard work to be done before I can get that far, so I have to train hard every day and listen to everything the coaches tell me.

Best moment in football so far: Playing for England Schoolboys at Wembley. It was a great experience. I started and there were 28,000 people there. It was only the second game at Wembley. I could have scored, but looking back now I thought I did well. When you get an experience of something like that you want it again.

Worst/most embarrassing moment: I can’t think of anything that’s happened in a game, but I get a lot of grief about my shoes from the lads. They also say I wear a woman’s jumper – but it’s a good jumper, I’m telling you. You can quote me on that.

Favourite other sports: Table tennis. In the youth team, I’m definitely among the top three. Matty James has beaten me a few times, but it’s been close. Scott Wootton is also good [Scott Wootton interjects: You’ll never beat Scott Wootton]. Gary Woods is all right as well. I used to play cricket and athletics. I represented my county. I was something like ninth in the country at one point in the 100m and 200m. But football is the sport I’ve always wanted to play.

Music: I like Arctic Monkeys, Kooks, Indie music. But I like a bit of Bassline. I don’t like rap or anything like that.

Food: Pasta and beans, or egg fried rice and beans. I eat that in my digs almost every night. I like plain foods, I’m not that adventurous so I stick to what I know!

Best trainer: Can I say myself? I’m definitely up there. Matty James’ teams tend to win in training. He needs to win. Davide Petrucci is good as well, but I’m definitely up there.

Worst: Conor Devlin is shocking! Reece Brown is very good in matches, but he is so stiff in training. A bad trainer. He’s a stiff guy

Best mate: Reece. I’ve not him since I was seven. We used to play up front together when we were kids. He’s better now he’s at the back.

Best dressed: Cameron [Stewart] is a good dresser, and Reece has got some good gear. I think I’ve got some good shoes.

Worst: Scott Wootton has got some bad gear. I’m not going to say too much, but he’s got a terrible hoodie that he wore to a game once… in fact, him and Conor Devlin live in digs together, so I took a look in the wardrobe and there weren’t too many nice clothes in there, I’m telling you! Bad gear, that’s all you need to know.

Favourite thing about Manchester: Good shops, and the girls are top dollar. I’m from Bury, which is a top place. Nice and snug!

Politics / Swine Flu Spreads To 21 African Nations by OneNaija(m): 1:25pm On Aug 31, 2009
WORLD Health Organisation (WHO) at the weekend reported 3,872 laboratory-confirmed human cases of pandemic (H1N1) Swine flu virus, including 11 deaths in 21 African countries as it today began the 59th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa at the Conference Centre of Serena Hotel in Kigali, the Rwandan capital.

The breakdown of confirmed cases and deaths showed that South Africa topped the chart with 3,485, followed by Kenya, 85; Mauritius, 69; Tanzania, 53; Cape Verde, 37; Namibia, 34 and Algeria, 33. Ghana with eight cases and Cameroun with four cases are the only countries in the west coast with reported cases. Nigeria is yet to report any case officially.

"Swine flu spreads four times faster than other viruses and 40 per cent of the fatalities are young adults in good health," WHO Director General, Margaret Chan, told France's Le Monde daily in an interview at the weekend.

"This virus travels at an unbelievable, almost unheard-of speed.

"In six weeks, it travels the same distance that other viruses take six months to cover," Chan said.

"Sixty per cent of the deaths cover those who have underlying health problems," Chan said. "This means that 40 per cent of the fatalities concern young adults - in good health - who die of a viral fever in five to seven days.

"This is the most worrying fact," she said, adding that "Up to 30 per cent of people in densely populated countries risked getting infected."

All countries in the region, according to WHO, have activated their national emergency preparedness and contingency response plans

"A crisis management team has been put in place by the Regional Director at the regional office (Brazzaville) and the sub regional levels (Intercountry Support teams in Harare, Zimbabwe, Gabon and Burkina Faso) to work closely with countries to boost their disease surveillance to ensure that any suspected case of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 is detected early.

Stockpiles of relevant medicines have been dispatched to all countries in the region as well as mapping laboratory and human resources capability at country and regional levels to enable WHO to support member states to respond rapidly to any suspected outbreaks," the agency said.

The emergence of the Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Pandemic puts an additional pressure on health systems of African countries already stretched with other competing public health priorities, said Dr. Luis Gomes Sambo, the WHO Regional Director for Africa.

In April 2009, the first case of Influenza A H1N1 was reported in Mexico. Since then, the virus has spread to other parts of the world, affecting over 166 countries with confirmed cases in excess of 174,913 and 1,411 deaths.

Health Minister, Professor Babatunde Osotimehin, is leading the Nigerian delegation in the four-day Regional Committee of WHO's Governing Body in the African Region, which is expected to consider a report on the work of the world health body in the region in 2008 to be presented by the Regional Director, Dr. Luis Sambo.

The report will provide a comprehensive review of the work of WHO in the region, highlighting successes achieved and challenges faced in the pursuit of the organisation's mandate of helping to improve the health situation in member states.

A highlight of this year's meeting will be the nomination of a new director for the WHO African Region, the global body's Programme Budget for the 2010 to 2011 biennium, and orientations for its implementation in the African Region.
