No fewerthan 36 sus- pected members of the Islamic funda- mentalist group called ‘Boko Haram’which had unleashed terror in some parts of northern Nigeria have been arrested in the early hours of Friday by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Abuja.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, John Haruna, who paraded the suspected militants, disclosed that they were arrested in Abuja at a motor park at about 1.00 am while on their way to the Southern parts of the country to launch attack, just the way their members did in Borno, Bauchi, Yobe, Kano states, among others recently.

CPHaruna said further that the Command has also uncovered plans by the sect to launch attack in some major government institu- tions and establishments in the FCT including the Presidential Villa and the National Assembly Complex, adding that the text messages sent by the group to some of their trained members in the FCT had been intercepted by the detectives in the Command.

The FCTpolice commis- sioner, however, revealed that on interrogation, the arrested Boko Haram sus- pects confessed that they were drafted from Kano, Jigawa, Yobe and two from Niger Republic and assem- bled in Kano where they took off with two buses with the inscription,“AfriBank bus”. “Upon interrogation, they all claimed they have no spe- cific means of livelihood and that they were travelling to the South–Western states to search for menial jobs”. According to Mr. Haruna, “we cannot tell you all the secrets. The main thing is that we have arrested all those ones and if we tell the whole world our secrets, then it will be difficult to arrest them.

We have also gathered that they were spe- cially trained. “We have also heard that there are security threats from the group. We gathered that Abuja is the main target but that they have to start from somewhere to attract attention before launching their attacks on the FCT. Nevertheless, I want to assure that we on our part are ready and equal to the task. We have arrested some sus- pects and some of the sus- pects have fled some parts of the FCT.

I will not say more than that because of security reasons. “From all intelligent sources, they have been existing for a long time under various guises. It is not normal that anybody will leave any part of the country for another without any spare dress in two buses. They look healthy and well fed. Certainly, there is suspi- cion that they are members of this sect, either running away or moving to another place to reconverge and wreack mayhem”Haruna stated.

President Umaru Yar’Adua last night in Brazil bemoaned the lack of sustainable development in many parts of Africa, blaming it on the absence of peace, security and stability which he identified as the major challenges hindering the progress of the continent.

This is even as he vowed to resist the attempt being made by President Tanja of Niger Republic to perpetuate himself in office through the manipulation of the process to extend his constitutionally allowed second term which ends in December this year.

The president, who is currently on a state visit to Brazil, stated this yesterday in the capital city of Brasilia when he met with the African ambassadors as part of his official engagements in the South American country, saying it was time to do away with all those inhibiting the growth of the continent.

Calling on all African countries to close ranks in the efforts to tackle the identified problems, he said unless concerted efforts were made to overcome the challenges, development would continue to elude Africa and its peoples would continue to wallow in abject poverty, disease and ignorance in a globalised world.

“Sustainable development which gives rise to happy livelihood to communities can take place only in an atmosphere of peace, security and political stability. The continent and its leaders and also our continental organisation of African Union have been aware of this fact and one of the efforts that is being made is to ensure sustainable peace and political stability and security in the continent and for our countries to create the environment for sustainable development,” he further stressed.

The president particularly singled out political instability in many of the countries which he attributed to rapid change of governments through unconstitutional means over the last half a century, the sit-tight syndrome of African leaders and manipulation of elections, saying it had made the implementation of developmental programmes impossible.

“We must be sure of political stability so that we can plan and implement policies and have continuity unlike on the past half a century where we had wasted a lot of energy without policies because of rapid changes of governments,” he stated.
He cited the case of Nigeria for instance, pointing out that since its independence in 1960, it was not until 2007 that Nigeria was able to achieve the feat of a peaceful change of power from one civil administration to another.

However, he told the ambassadors that African leaders were making tremendous efforts to halt the drift by dealing with the sit-tight syndrome and manipulation of the electoral system by the leaders in a determination to promote peace, security and stability needed for development.

“This is why my administration has embarked on the reform of our electoral process so that we can have a good electoral process and decent democracy and ensure credible and acceptable elections that will form the basis for building trust in the system we are operating. We are also making this effort at the sub-regional level, that is ECOWAS. I think so far we have had successes in Sierra Leone, Liberia and now in Guinea Bissau,” he further pointed out.

Commenting on the Nigerian leader, President Yar’Adua, who is the current chairman of ECOWAS said moves are on to dissuade him from his mission of unconstitutional elongation of his tenure, vowing that Nigeria would not sit by and watch that happen in the country.
“I have sent a delegation from ECOWAS to talk to President Tanja. We have also sent a joint delegation of ECOWAS and African Union (EU) and UN but there still seems to be no positive response. As soon as I go back to Abuja, I will invite President Tanja to come to Abuja because we need stability, we need political stability, peace and security for us to pay attention to issues of development, education, human development and there are many challenges,” he added.

Similarly, he said African leaders had told Captain Kamara of Guinea Conakry and Lurrent Gbagbo of Cote d’Ivoire to ensure that they held credible elections in their countries by the end of this year as a way of promoting peace in their domain so that development could go on.
He told the African ambassadors to show interest in what is happening all over the continent and not just their individual countries alone, saying all African countries were bound by similar historical experiences.

Director General of the State Security Services [SSS], Afakriya Gadazama, warned on Thursday that the rate of kidnapping, armed robbery, sectarian clashes and endless importation of arms into the country pointed to one fact: That the 2011 general elections would be bloody.

Gadzama, who gave the warning at an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committees on National Security and Police Affairs, also noted that the way government ignores security reports would also worsens general insecurity in the country.

He told a worried House of Representatives before they went for a four-hour closed door meeting, that his agency had never failed to issue warning notices on impending troubles in all flash points, but regretted that not much was being done to avert such crisis.

Appearing together with the acting Inspector General of Police, Ogbonnaya Onovo, the SSS boss said information on kidnapping in Niger Delta, to armed robbery in South East, attack of Atlas Cove in Lagos, the Jos crisis and the latest violence in some parts of the northern region had been passed to the appropriate quarters.

He blamed the problems of insecurity in the country on the fallout of political system that disconnected the people from government and the porous borders.
Given the example of Anambra State, Gadzama said there was large influx of arms into the hands of thugs, which, according to him, gave rise to kidnapping and violent robbery.
The attitude of displaying wealth and government’s inability to carry the people along also contributed to the state of insecurity, not only in the South East, but in other parts of the country.

He warned that ending the crisis in the Niger Delta would not put an end to violence, as there was the need to strengthen all security agencies in areas of provision of working tools and improved service conditions.
The SSS boss pointed to the Jos mayhem, the attack of Atlas Cove as classical examples of slow reactions to curtail violence due to a disconnect between security agencies.

On the outbreak of violence ravaging the North, Gadzama said it was embarrassing because it was anticipated, while the management of information that was gathered was another thing.
The new IGP in his submission said the problems of the Nigeria Police were not strange to the House in areas of inadequate vehicles, shortage of personnel and outdated equipment to work with.
Not withstanding, he assured that police would still do their best to maintain law and order, while reminding the lawmakers of the need to increase funding for the police.

Chairman of Police Affairs Committee, Hon. Abdul Ningi. captured the mind of the House when he said all members were worried about the breakdown of law and order in most parts of the country.
After the appraisal of the state of insecurity by the security chiefs, the meeting went into a closed-door session that lasted over four hours.

The people of the South-South have been advised to support the governors of the region in their quest to withdraw from the amnesty declaration by the Federal Government, if certain conditions are not met.

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan gave this advice at the weekend in Opuraja, Okpe Council area of Delta State during the traditional marriage between Former Miss Stella Oyovbaire, daughter of former Minister of information, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire and Mr. Jonah Ejanavi.

The governor explained that Federal Government needed to address the issue of post-amnesty plan as well as present a sustainable development plan for the region.
He condemned the relocation of the University of Petroleum Technology from Effurun to Kaduna and called for the retention of the institution in Delta State .

Furthermore, he said the Petroleum Industry Bill in the Senate should contain provisions like specific allocation of resources, royalties or proceeds from oil explorations that would benefit the region.
According to him, “ The governors of the South-South are calling for the support of our people to withdraw from the amnesty plan of the Federal Government, if the interest of the region is not protected.”

In a brief remark, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Thompson Okpoko, commended Governor Uduaghan and his colleagues in the South-South geo-political zone for the bold and courageous decision taken to address the issues troubling the zone.

Okpoko, a former president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), urged the people to rally round the governors to ensure that the outcome of the just concluded South-South Governors Forum, was not in vain.
He said that if it meant the people sacrificing their comfort for a period, to achieve the objective, it would be worth the effort.

His words “We commend you, our governor and your colleagues in the other Niger-Delta states for deciding to pull out from the Federal Government’s amnesty plan. We cannot agree to any Federal Government decision that is detrimental to our interest. The Niger-Delta people will give you their full support.”

Director General of NASRDA, Dr. Saidu Mohammed said. " The NigeriaSat-X is being developed by Nigerian engineers at the Surrey Satellite Technology Facility in UK. NigeriaSat-2 and Sat-X would cater for the wider interest of geo-information stakeholders as well as serve a sources of geo-information data acquisition for both core and thematic datasets for the NGDI project."

Recalling Yar'Adua's recent statement of the government's plan to build a trans-Saharan pipeline from Nigeria (Niger-Delta) to Algeria , he wondered why the South-South governors should not mobilize and meet Mr. President in Abuja and tell him unmistakably that the pipeline would be blown up by the boys if the proper thing was not done.

With the show the governors put in Asaba on Thursday, it was obvious that they had been bearing some pains of marginalization and oppression for a long time, but, events of the last few days made them to break loose.

All PDP, except for Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state, who is of the AC, the governors have done everything in the last two years and more to tag along with President Yar'Adua in virtually all his policies so as not to rock the party, but, the growing power of some of his advice-givers, who are anti-South-South in their actions, and the inability of Mr. President to quickly denounce their antics has become a source of concern to them.

Initially, some of the governors reported their worries to the Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan but the look of things; it was evident that the number two citizen was not in the position to sway the President.

And so, the only option probably left for the governors, who are not unmindful of their place in history if they failed to take the bull by horn was to challenge the authority of Yar'Adua to give imprimatur to such decisions. They have come with a subtle threat of warning so as not to appear as if they are confronting Mr. President, hoping that he would read the handwriting on the wall and urgently make amend.

However, some South_Southerners who support the new spirit of the governors would not want the warning to be a blank threat and urged them not to give in to any appeal by President Yar'Adua as long as the issues they raised were not satisfactorily addressed.

They said it would be the worse treachery if the purpose of issuing the warning was to make the people of the South_South feel that they were really disturbed by the developments, whereas, they are on the same page with Yar'Adua and his Northern cohorts. But feelers from some sources close to the governors said they mean business this time around.

It was gathered that for a long time some of the governors who were bent on creating conducive atmosphere for the operations of the oil companies in the region and other stakeholders pleaded with the Presidency to grant amnesty to militants to facilitate their discussions with the armed youths to drop their arms, but, the Presidency paid deaf ears until the ill-advised Cordon and Search operation by the Joint Task Force on the Niger_Delta led to the near_total crippling of the economy.

Some of the governors were called militants and sponsors of militants for suggesting a way out and when, out of panic, the Federal Government proclaimed amnesty, it did not come out with any clear-cut development programme and the governors have no idea of what its actual intentions are, whether it is to get the militants off its back to continue to explore oil and gas or that it really has the interest of the people at heart, nobody can say.

Even the Ministry of Niger-Delta with two Ministers from the Niger-Delta does not have enough funds and authority to initiate certain things concerning the region without clearance from some Northern apologists in the Presidency.

Since the Niger-Delta Technical Committee headed by Mr. Ledum Mitee submitted its report, the governors have been buffeted from all fronts by their people on why the Federal Government has refused to issue a white paper on for nearly seven months, but despite the fact that they don't have a correct answer, they kept telling their people that a committee was looking into it with the view of producing the recommendations that the President would use to come with a white paper. But for how long can they continue to lie to their people when the Mitee report contains the solutions to most of the problems.

Undeterred, the governors still battled to see how to get an "unwilling" President Yar'Adua to appraise the issues from a proper perspective so as not spoil the apple carte, his Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Riwalnu Lukman added salt to injury with his crude verbiage in recent outings that portrayed the oil communities as meaning nothing to the government of the day.

The sheer arrogance of Lukman broke the camel's back, forcing the governors to react collectively against the President for the first time.

President Umaru Yar'Adua was rattled yesterday by the South-South Governors' threat to pull out of its amnesty programme for militants and has reached out to some of the governors to find out what went wrong with their usual channel of communication with him and how best to resolve the vexed issues.

Our source said it is most likely the President would settle for a meeting with the Governors in Aso Villa in the next few days to iron out the grey areas since their full cooperation and participation are very vital to the success of the amnesty programme and other peace efforts.

A dependable source also hinted, "The governors will be in Abuja on Sunday and probably they would meet with Mr. President to address the issues they raised with him but what I can tell you is that there is a lot of pressure on them to simmer down on their tough stance".

Several ministers called their governors yesterday to know if what they read in the newspapers concerning their position was correct and they told them they were not quoted out of context.

However, the elders and leaders of the South-South, Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta (MEND) Warri-Ijaw Peace Monitoring Group and other groups have thrown their weight behind the governors, who they commended for taking such a bold decision for the first time.

It was also learnt that President Yar'Adua has asked the Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to talk to his people, but, according to my source, the governors have politely told the Vice President to steer clear of the matter and allow them to face Mr. President.

A Presidency source who was contacted by Saturday Vanguard said he was not aware of any discussion between President Yar'Adua and the governors on the matter but added, "The President would naturally be concerned but I don't know what he has done about it".

Efforts to get comments from the President's spokesman, Mr. Segun Adeniyi yesterday was unsuccessful as the call to his line did not go through and a text message to his line asking for President Yar'Adua's response to the threat of the governors was not replied at press time.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that the governors knew the Presidency would want to persuade them to drop the demands, but, they agreed at the meeting not to allow any personal or party considerations to overshadow the collective interest of the people of the region.

MEND elated by govs' position

Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta (MEND) in an exclusive electronic mail response to an inquiry by Saturday Saturday Vanguard said, "We are elated that our governors are waking up from a long period of hibernation".

"However, knowing these are typical Nigerian politicians, we doubt they will have the moral justification to fight for their people because they have soiled their hands with blood money and a majority of them were not elected into office by the people but through electoral fraud", its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo stated.

Yar' Adua

His words, "These are men who have sold their birthright to the North for a bowl of porridge and suddenly have realized what their treachery has caused their people. If they are genuinely committed, it is not too late to make amends".

"That the governors are beginning to see what MEND saw in 2006 has vindicated us.

It is sad that many souls have perished because of the greed of a few men in authority who got carried away with fleeting power.

Many of these same men are the ones paying the JTF to suppress their own people to the extent that the JTF can carry out extra-judicial killings with impunity", he said.

"Up to date, Governor Rotimi Amaechi has not investigated the killings caught on tape of two citizens of Rivers state, how then can such a leader be trusted that they care for the oil bearing communities.

Perhaps they are learning from the solidarity of the Northern governors and parliamentarians who put their people first before other parts of Nigeria", he added.

S-South elders hail govs

South-South leader, Chief Edwin Clark told Saturday Vanguard that the elders and leaders of the zone would meet August 3 in Akwa-Ibom to deliberate on the arrogant and provocative statement of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr. Riwalnu Lukman, Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) upgrade palaver and other matters that affect the region, while the Delta State Elders, Leaders and Stakeholders Forum would meet on Tuesday at Kiagbodo on the same matter.

On the threat issued President Yar'Adua by the South-South governors, he said the elders, leaders and people of the region were strongly behind the governors, who, for the first time, have taken a fashionable decision.

"We are solidly behind them and we are happy with the decision they took at Asaba. We all accepted the amnesty by President Yar'Adua, not that we don't know the implications but with the Petroleum Industry Bill, which denies the oil producing communities of their right, the arrogant comments of Dr Lukman and the utter manner in which the upgrade of Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Warri was reversed, the amnesty appears to have been programmed to fail", he asserted.

His words, "We are going to discuss the provocative, arrogant and uncompromising statement of Dr Rilwanu Lukman, the upgrade of Petroleum College in Kaduna at over N14 billion, building of the Petroleum Development Trust Fund headquarters at N10 billion in Abuja, downgrading of PTI, Effurun, near Warri and all that".

He said the country belongs to all Nigerians and nobody should be regarded to be a second-class citizen by the other, adding, "The country has to be governed with the consent of everybody and nobody should take himself as being superior to the other person".

Good riddance to bad rubbish -- IYC

National President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Dr. Chris Ekiyor who spoke to Saturday Vanguard said, "IYC supports the South-South Governors in their threat to pull out from the amnesty programme because the Federal Government cannot say that they are solving the Niger-Delta problem on one hand and creating more problems on another hand".

"The Federal Government is insulting us by pulling our resources to upgrade a Petroleum Training Institute in Kaduna for over N14billlion and building a N10billion headquarters for the PTDF in Abuja when our complaint is that we are not happy with the ones they have pulled out in the past", he said.

Dr. Ekiyor urged members of the National Assembly from the South-South and South-East and possibly the South-West to work together and ensure that they throw out the proposed Petroleum Industry Bill, which took no cognisance of the oil producing communities.

Good decision -- WIPMG Chairman of the Warri-Ijaw Peace Monitoring Group (WIPMG), Chief Paul Bigha told Saturday Vanguard, "The threat by the South-South governors to withdraw from the amnesty programme because of the reasons they gave is a laudable one. Why S-South Govs decided to tackle Yar'Adua

THE forewarning on Thursday night by South-South Governors that they would pull out of the amnesty programme of the Federal Government on the grounds of absence of a definite post-amnesty programme for the region, anti-oil-producing communities bearing of the proposed Petroleum Industry Bill and movement of the University of Petroleum from Effurun to Kaduna did not come as a shock to many Niger-Deltans.

To the more discerning ones, however, the action taken by the Governors at Asaba was expected long time ago, but, even though it was late in coming, it is still good as aphorism, "It is better late than never" demonstrates.

The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has lashed out at the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), describing as baseless and unfounded, its recent accustion that the South-West was responsible for the plight of the Niger Delta people.

This statement came as a reaction to a comment credited to MEND, that the YCE, OPC and the entire South-West should apologize to the militant organization and the Niger Delta over what was described as the “brutal” actions of Obasanjo in the region. MEND had maintained in its statement that Obasanjo, whom the group believed represented the Yoruba nation had in one swoop, wiped out an entire community in Odi and wasted their resources while he was the minister for petroleum.

However, in an interview with Daily Sun, the YCE spokesperson and Kwara State chairman, Suleiman Salawu, refuted the allegation, saying that the Yoruba nation was shocked at the utterances of MEND accusing the South West of being responsible for the sufferings of the Niger Delta people through former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“We have always sympathized with the Niger Delta people over their plight, which we believe is not peculiar to them, but they are taking it too far. It is very unreasonable for them to say that former President Olusegun Obasanjo was representing the Yoruba people in his actions. The allegation is unfounded and untrue. In the first place, Obasanjo was never a candidate of the South-West. How many Yoruba people voted for him in the 1999 elections? None. He was foisted there by the Northern oligarchy that still wanted to be in the mainstream.”

“Obasanjo was acting out the script of those who put him in power, and was in no way representing the interest of the Yoruba nation. We never supported any of his actions and we will still not support it if they are wrong. The South-West are a peace loving people who do not like to war, that is why we are calling for calm, because bombing the whole of Lagos will only aggravate tension.”

Salawu went on to say that the recent bombings of the Atlas Cove by the militants was not the way out of the problems in the country, calling on the militants to sheath their swords and not let their grievances affect innocent people negatively, “because another of such occurrence will not go down well with the Yoruba nation,” he said.

“The only way things can go right in Nigeria is by calling for a Sovereign National Conference, where a constitution that will address these issues will be addressed. Apart from that, the onus lies on the people of Nigeria to join forces and wrest power out of the hands of the leaders that are destroying us.”
“We want to believe that none of such bombings will occur again, because the Southwest is in no way happy with it.

President Musa Yar’Adua may have made up his mind to run for a second term in office. Indications to that effect emerged Tuesday with a series of subtle re-allignments and repositioning within the beheved Yar’Adua inner circle.

The president had at the Special Convention of his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on April 20, this year staved off speculations on his ambition to run for the 2011 presidential polls by warning early campaigners to lay off and give him and other elected public officials space to concentrate on the delivery of democracy dividends.

To give vent to the news push to return him to power in 2011, the rave making sixteen years old Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), founded by his late elder brother Gen. Shehu Yar’Adua, has been revived and given more impetus in the presidency. It is led by Dr Farouk Abdulazeez, a known acolyte of the Yar’Adua political family.

The revitalization of the almost moribund body which slipped into near oblivion during the Chief Obasanjo /Atiku years has triggered off a major political shift in the nation with many political bigwigs falling over themselves to be part of it.
Among the jostlers are serving and ex-governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives and other influential politicians.

The new re-alignment came on the heels of the recent reported ceding of the presidency to the Soith-East geo-political zone by the leadership of the PDP, which expectedly drew the instant ire of the presidency.
Among those who have tacitly indicated interest in the on-going re-alignment is the former vice-president and leader of the PDM, Alhaji Atiku Abubakr, who is currently in the Action Congress (AC).
A source at the presidency said Atiku had over the past few weeks made discreet enquiries on the evolving scheme of things in the PDM and Yar’Adua’s planned return to power in 2011 on it’s platform.
The source said, “it is not for nothing that Atiku who had over the years refrained from calling his former political associates in the PDM, is now calling them up, and asking about their families and well being. We are confident that very soon he will be part of the movement again.”

Daily Sun further learnt that the former vice-president’s interest to return to the PDP, which began with a visit to his former boss, Obasanjo earlier in the year is still on course and will soon be realised.
To further oil and strengthen the return bid of the president in 2011, 32 pro-Yar-Adua groups have collapsed into the PDM, while arrangements are on to re-invigorate the state and local government chapters. The new head, Abdulazeez and other key officers are currently on a nationwide consultation tour to meet with state governors and other influential stakeholders.

Some of the groups that have so far embraced the PDM include Yar’Adua/Jonathan Solidarity Mass Movement, Yar’Adua/Jonathan Success Movement, Yar’Adua/Jonathan Solidarity Forum, home and abroad, south-south Progressive Council and Yar’Adua/Jonathan 2011 Project.
Others are Yar’Adua/Jonathan 7-point agenda, and continuity and good governance campaign.
The presidency is however striving hard to keep a distance from the activities of the group, but the source confirmed an unstinted backing.

Since the aborted third republic. The PDM had maintained an unbroken hold on the nation’s political space, successfully delivering the presidential seats to the late Chief M.K.O Abiola in the annulled June 12, 1993 polls and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 1998 before he set the machinery in motion that crippled it.

Before then, the late Shehu Yar’Adua had used it to galvanize an unprecedented Pan Nigeria drive that clinched twice the entire primaries of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The group which has members currently across some major political parties also allegedly intervened in the controversial re-run governorship polls in Ekiti on April 25, 2009 by whipping ex-Lagos governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is a member, and whose interest in the re-run polls was barely concealed, into lime.

Although, the group has fashioned an iron-clad plan to back Yar’Adua’s second term bid to the hilt it was learnt that Bauchi state governor and Yar’Adua’s son-in-law Isa Yuguda is being considered for the plum job “if for any reason the president will not run.”

Marlon Jackson, a member of the rested Jackson Five and an elder brother to the late king of pop, Michael Jackson on Wednesday pledged to assist the Federal Government in seeking a lasting solution to the intractable Niger -Delta crisis.

The 52-year-old businessman, who is developing a tourism project in Badagry area of Lagos, also disclosed that Michael Jackson would have been in Nigeria later in the year to inspect the project.

Marlon, who arrived Lagos from the United States aboard a Delta Airways flight at about 3.30pm, told reporters that his organisation, Study Peace Worldwide and the Jacksons Peace Foundation, are prepared to meet with the Federal Government and other stakeholders towards a peaceful resolution of the crises in the restive region.

His words: “As the founder and CEO of Study Peace Worldwide, I’m willing to offer my assistance towards a peaceful resolution of the Niger Delta crisis. I’m prepared to meet with the Federal Government and other stakeholders. We must understand, all the world leaders, presidents, kings and humanity in general, that our creator created us not to be at war with one another, not to judge one another, but to love one another.

We want to create a peaceful environment for ourselves globally. And our creator will not judge you on your material wealth, but on what you did for others. We must spread love and enthrone peace. We need to understand one another and promote peace in the world.”
Marlon, who declined comments on the alleged murder of his brother, said a competent team of investigators is handling the case. He said the Jackson family was still mourning the loss of the pop icon.

Speaking about his mission in Nigeria, Marlon, who was obviously fatigued after a long flight from the US, said he would, alongside his partners, develop a historical centre in Badagry that will comprise museums, pavilions, African drums and rhythms, as well as a museum on the Jacksons and his late brother.

He spoke further: “I saw Michael last in May when our family had a function for my father and my mother. A lot of our family members were there, including Michael. That was the last time I saw my brother alive. He knew I had just come back from Nigeria and he was interested in what I was doing in Nigeria because he had never visited Nigeria. I talked to him about the project that we are doing in Badagry here and he was interested in the project.”

Marlon also disclosed his late brother’s intention to visit Nigeria later in the year. Said he: “I’ve always told people that we were Africans before we became African Americans. And it is important for the people of the world to know what our forefathers went through. He (Michael) was looking forward to the project and then he would have come and see it. And I assured him that we would finish the project and that he would see it. We will still finish the project, but he will not see it. But I know he will see it in spirit.”

Meanwhile, former presidents of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Tee Mac Omatsola Iseli and Bolaji Rosiji, said a memorial charity concert in honour of Michael Jackson will hold in Lagos on August 29. The proceeds of the concert will be donated to charity organisations, they said.
Rosiji added that a team of stakeholders, including Goranga Foundation, Z-Mirage Lyrics Magazine and others are supporting the concert.

Abuja — Nigerians should expect improved power supply by October this year, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) said yesterday.

There has been a noticeable drop in power supply in the last one month, with many parts of Nigeria going for weeks without electricity.

However, PHCN has given a situation report, with a promise that the power generated by the hydro stations, which stands at 594 megawatts, will hit 1382 megawatts between October and November when water levels are expected to be high.

This, according to the company's spokesperson, Mrs. Efuru Igbo, would mitigate the abysmal power supply situation.

Although the country currently needs anything between 4000-6000 megawatts to achieve a fairly stable power supply, the current output is estimated at 2000 megawatts because of problems with gas supply.

As at yesterday, the hydro plants at Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro, all in Niger State, generated 127 megawatts, 225 megawatts and 242 megawatts respectively, way below their installed capacities, owing mainly to the fact that they are yet to hit their peak in terms of available water level.

By October to November, she said, Nigerians could expect to enjoy a much improved supply, although she said 75 per cent of electricity generation in the country is based on the thermal power stations currently bedevilled by gas shortage.

Restating the government's determination to meeting the 6000 megawatts target by December, Igbo said the power utility company was building injection substations throughout Nigeria as well as distribution substations, rehabilitating lines and constructing new lines.

She said all distribution transformers, circuit breakers and isolators had been procured from known manufacturers.

"A majority of the lines materials are in our stores," she said.

According to her, among the items procured are 7.5MVA to 15MVA transformers and 33/11KV panels with an estimated value of over N2 billion, which will improve voltage level and relieve overloaded transformers and lines.

A document obtained by THISDAY showed that transmission projects were going on various parts of the country such as Niger, Kebbi, Kano, Lagos and Rivers States.

They are to increase the capability of the transmission grid to wheel additional power to the major load centres, reduce technical losses and generally guarantee quality and reliable electricity supply.

In particular, the document said the project in Afam, Rivers State, would provide additional security to the network in that station to evacuate the power from the new Afam VI power station by Shell.

"Similarly, the project in Kebbi at Birnin Kebbi 330/132KV station will not only improve the supply to Kebbi State but also Sokoto State in addition to providing flexibility of operations in the station," it said.

It also disclosed 16 units of 60MVA transformers had been procured and six of them had already arrived and the clearing process was ongoing, while additional four transformers were on the high seas and would arrive in six weeks.

"These 10 no. transformers will be installed in Alimosho, Ughelli, Kaduna, Abuja, Owerri and Gombe, Maryland, Suleija, Nnewi and Sokoto transmission stations," the document said. "As soon as the others arrive, they will be distributed to various areas of need. Three 150MVA transformers are also expected in the country within the next three weeks and they will be installed in Akangba, Kaduna (Mondo) and Abuja Katampe transmission stations."

The PHCN spokesperson said the expansion programme would make areas without power to have access to the utility.

Igbo said owing to the vandalism of gas pipelines which had made gas supply to the power plants inadequate, there had been over-dependence on the available hydro power stations, but noted that the Federal Government had been working hard to make gas available through the gas master plan.

She said given all of the work going on across the country, the attainment of 6000 megawatts was a certainty.
