Politics / Wonder British-nigerian Twins Enter High School by OneNaija(m): 11:10am On Mar 03, 2010
Two nine year olds known as the Wonder Twins for their record-beating exam results are set to become the youngest pupils admitted to a British secondary school.

Paula and Peter Imafidon, from Waltham Forest, London, amazed parents and teachers when they passed an A-level maths exam at the age of seven.

The twins have been waiting to find out which secondary school they will attend, along with thousands of other youngsters - who are two years older - across the country.

Peter and Paula, who attend a state primary in London, were helped by their three older brothers and sisters, all of whom were also child prodigies.

Their father Chris said he was thrilled by his childen's achievements at school.

He denied any particular genius in the family, crediting their success to the Excellence in Education programme for inner city children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

"Every child is a genius," he said. "Once you identify the talent of a child and put them in the environment that will nurture that talent then the sky is the limit.

"Look at Tiger Woods, or the Williams sisters - they were nurtured.

"You can never rule anything out with them, the competition between the two of them makes them excel in anything they do.

"They are forever competing and fighting, even if it's just for the remote control or the computer."

Paula hopes to become a maths teacher, while Peter hopes to become Prime Minister one day.

Northern Senators Forum and members of the National Interest Group (NIG), have turned down overtures from the First Lady, Hajiya Turai Yar’Adua to maintain the status quo and not disgrace President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua out of office.

In the same vein, feelers from the Presidency indicate that recuperating President Yar’Adua who was hurriedly brought into the country last week may no longer be fit enough to withstand the rigours of the office of President. Members of the NIG in the Senate have in the mean time, resolved to press for the physical appearance of President Yar’Adua either through television broadcast or by addressing the National Assembly.

A Senator from the North East zone who attended the meeting of Northern Senators Forum told Daily Sun that from the entreaties of the First Lady, it was clear that she was no longer campaigning for her husband’s continuation in office as President but merely wanted his interest protected by the Senate and House of Representatives.
The Senator, who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “I can tell you for sure that the First Lady Turai is lobbying to get one of their loyalists nominated and approved as Vice President to Acting President Goodluck Jonathan since it is now clear that President Yar’Adua can no longer continue in office.”

He further opined that those on the card of the First Lady for the position of the Vice President are the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Saiyadi Abba-Ruma, his FCT counterpart, Senator Adamu Aliero and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Ibrahim Ida from Katsina State.

The Northern Senators Forum members, majority of whom are members of the National Interest Group led by Senator Bala Mohammed (ANPP Bauchi), politely turned down the request of Hajiya Turai insisting that they would rather be guided by national interest and not that of an individual or a group working against the overall interest of Nigeria, adding that they do not see how the Yar’Adua’s Presidency has been of any advantage to the Northern region.

First Lady Turai, Daily Sun gathered, is of the strong view that the Senate which ought to be less radical in nature has gone too much to the left on the matter concerning her husband’s health thus has moved to get members of the House of Representatives to key into her demands as part of the compensation she believe her family deserves.

The First family is believed to have come to the conclusion that the Senate President, Senator David Mark unlike the Speaker of the House of Representatives is not in control of the Senate that is now believed to have been taken over by the radical group.

Daily Sun also gathered that explanation by some of the emissaries of the First Lady that President Yar’Adua was brought in to assuage their feelings did not scale through as the Senators pointedly told the conveyers of the message that if it was true, they would have been taken into confidence before Yar’Adua was brought in a commando action.

Daily Sun equally gathered that spirited attempts by Senators from Katsina State, led by the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Kanti Bello to get their colleagues accept the overtures of Hajiya Turai Yar’Adua owing to what they described as a heavy burden on them were rebuffed by majority of the Northern Senators Forum.

The Katsina Senators were said to have pleaded with their Northern Senators to assist them by accepting the plea of the First Lady in order not to have their positions jettisoned as well as save them the difficulty of facing their people back home.
Inspite of the arrival of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the Northern oligarchy has intensified efforts aimed at getting a formidable candidate to work with Acting President Goodluck Jonathan as Vice President.

Following the not too impressive outing with the Northern Senators Forum, Turai is believed to have extended her tentacles to Senators from other zones to sell her position to them even as majority of the Senators are yet to give her fronts any serious listening ears as they are believed to be analyzing the development as an attempt to reduce and personalize issues of State.

Meanwhile, a powerful group from the North including those from the ailing President’s home state of Katsina has commenced vigorous shopping for the nomination of a strong and acceptable candidate to serve as Vice president to Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Northern group believed to be headed by elder statesman, Alhaji Mamman Daura, Alhaji Wada Maida former Managing Director of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and one time Chief Press Secretary to General Muhammadu Buhari when he was Head of State and Mallam Adamu Adamu a columnist are believed to have zeroed in on former Chief of Army Staff and later Minister of Defence, General T. Y. Danjuma for the position.

The choice of General T. Y. Danjuma (rtd.), Daily Sun gathered was based on the understanding that he is highly connected, understands the dynamics of power with a good grip on the military, in addition to his enormous wealth and most importantly as one that would be in a position to checkmate the influence of former President Obasanjo on the Dr. Jonathan’s presidency.

It was also gathered that the Northern oligarchy made up of Emirs and former Presidents are working behind the scene while putting some of their foot soldiers to commence the campaign for the choice and acceptance of Gen. T. Y. Danjuma (rtd.).

Daily Sun sources further revealed that the choice of General Danjuma, a Christian to work with Dr. Jonathan also a Christian is aimed at erasing and correcting the impression that Christians from the Northern part of the country are not acceptable to the core Northern Muslims.
It is also part of the message by the Northern oligarchy to the rest of the country that a Christian/Christian ticket is also acceptable to the North like it was acceptable to the Christians community during the election of late Chief M. K.O. Abiola and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe that was a Muslim/Muslim ticket in annulled 1993 presidential election.

Nico Gravity and Timaya
Photo: Sun News Publishing
Mores Stories on this Section
Many may not know him as Paul Nnamdi Okpara as the name does not ring a bell. But as Nico Gravity, he is the musician who went off the music scene for many years and has now returned to re-establish his presence. He is also the singer who is trying to cut Timaya to size through his wave-making album, Scatter Timaya.

Here, Gravity opens up to Blockbuster on what he stands to gain by beefing Timaya. The ghetto boy also talks about his death rumour and relationship with women. Excerpts:

How it all started
I started music way back in1991 in Reggae Dub Chapel where we used to have the late Johnny Nab. It is a place where we used to gather and play instrumental on turn-table and boys used microphone to rap and to impress a very little crowd that had gathered. I used to go there everyday and at a point, I started staying there with a lot of guys like Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh and Marvellous Benjy.

It was like a training ground for those of us that did music in the ghetto. I started in 1991, then in 1993, I did a duet with Daddy Fresh in a song entitled, Clean Up, then in 1995 I also did a duet with him, Fakafikifaka. In 1996, I released my debut album, Story Teller under Felin Records and two years later, I did another song, This is Lagos. I have done other songs such as I Go Mortuary in 2000 but when it was about to be released, I left Lagos and got a job with the BBC as a Sound Engineer. I worked for three years and was away from Lagos for four years and when I came back I released Scatter Timaya.

Inspiration
Before I went into music, I was learning spare parts trade in Idumota and that was when I discovered that I was always listening to music, rapping, making songs and people were always commending and encouraging me to take it up as a career. I just love music. I love to make people laugh. That time, it was not about the money. If you sing and people clap, you are very happy for a whole week. It was just the love for music that made me go into it.

I’m teetotaler
I don’t smoke marijuana. I don’t drink alcohol but I just like making songs. If am in a club listening to music and I dance for too long, I can get a musical idea. I could just be strolling and get an idea. Basically the things that I see and the things that happen to me inspire me to make songs. It is just God.

Why I scattered Timaya
I came back from Abuja and needed to re-establish my relevance, to let people know that I am back, that was just apart. The major thing is that I listened to Timaya’s music, and I want to say that it’s very interesting. I saw a lot of loopholes in his lyrical reasoning. He makes 10 songs, nine and half are about himself and the things he has acquired and the money he has made. I remember that when we were learning how to play music, the first thing you try to make is sense.

As some people would ask you, what is the meaning of this song? I discovered that music was becoming more meaningless. Yes, self praise is an internationally acknowledged and accepted pattern of writing songs but an artiste’s lyrical range doesn’t have to be narrowed down completely to self-praise and I discovered that Timaya was mostly all about himself. I also saw that Timaya was making his songs as if he is quarelling with somebody and has problems with artistes who are based in Lagos.
Timaya’s music reflected a certain kind of disrespect or let me say anger for artistes in Lagos.

The ultimate reason I attacked Timaya was because of that line where he said, I broke into their Lagos market. Note the word, their, if it had been, I broke into the Lagos market, am very sure I wouldn’t have had any problem with that. But the word their sounded so direct and so personal as if he has been beefing Lagos artistes for a long time. I know artistes from Port Harcourt who came to Lagos and made a lot of waves, Etiene T Boy did it, Daniel Wilson also did it, but I saw all of that as fun. It was interesting and I saw the opportunity of making interesting music based on that topic.

There’s need to re-establish myself
They think I hate Timaya and want him to fall. No, I saw an opportunity of making a song that has the intention of becoming interesting based on the topic of Timaya’s kind of music. I am sure most artistes in Lagos didn’t do it because they were friends of Timaya, they didn’t want to get on his bad side or somehow they did not want Timaya’s fans to dislike them but I needed to re-establish my return and entertain people. It is basically entertainment.

On Timaya’s response
I have never seen Timaya face to face in my life. I only see him on TV and am sure he only sees me on TV too that is if he has ever seen me on TV. I am sure if he passes me, he might not recognise me but funny enough, most of his people are my people. Most of the people he rose with are my friends. We have never met. If I meet him one on one, it would be like guy, how far now, don’t take it personal, I hope you understand its entertainment. I have no beef whatsoever with Timaya.

Controversy and death rumour
I want to play down on the controversy because it has caused its own ugly side even if it has exposed me. It has also brought me a lot of things like the death rumour and people harassing me. I’ve gone to shows with so much security around me. You never can tell a crazy Timaya fan who is trying to hurt you. It has brought a lot of unpleasant things

On Mighty Mouse
Mighty Mouse is just a guy who is misunderstood and who also misunderstands himself. But he was like fighting against the album, “Scatter Timaya” at a point when it was becoming big. He was using his sound system and microphone to preach against the music and telling people not to play it. Recently, we spoke and we are doing a stuff on the computer.

Mighty Mouse is bigger than me. We are not fighting over supremacy. He is a big man in the music community in Ajegunle and he supports us a lot. I was just not happy with him but he is a man who I respect a lot and have supported in many ways. He is not the person that should be fighting me now that I am trying to break even.

Relationship with women
It’s a big problem. It is very hard to handle especially when they find out that you are not married. They all want commitment which is easy to promise but hard to deliver. My New Year resolution is to be very prayerful. I am praying to God to give me the wisdom to be able to juggle girls properly and eventually come to the one that I will settle down with. You can’t marry non-tested. If you want to buy a car, you have to test it to observe the engine noise and other things. I am just like test running, if things go well, I would get married before this year runs out.

Zimbabwe: Foreign and Nigerian businesses to face indigenization law

AAG wants to flush out foreign businesses
Wednesday 17 February 2010 / by Alice Chimora

Quote:
A radical black empowerment lobby group, the Affirmative Action Group (AAG) has resolved to flush out all foreigners especially Nigerian businessmen in Zimbabwe by all means to pave way for locals.

AAG, a militant group with strong links with Zanu PF said it will use force to rid of all Nigerians running businesses in the country’s cities and towns to create space for black Zimbabweans. The group claims that Nigerians are crowding out struggling black Zimbabweans from businesses hence they should be forced to leave to allow locals to enjoy the privilege.

AAG campaigns for black economic empowerment in the country.

Charles Nyachowa, AAG Harare regional president, today said government has been notified of their intentions. "The Nigerians are using Zimbabweans as fronts because the businesses are registered in the names of Zimbabweans but are run by Nigerians," Nyachowa said. The group “will also deal decisively with Zimbabweans that connive with the foreigners to frustrate their efforts," he continued.

AAG claim that Zimbabweans were forcing their daughters and sisters to marry Nigerians in return for cash and other favours. And to achieve the potential violent move a door-to-door campaign would be launched to authenticate the ownership of businesses.

Lately, Nigerians and other nationals from West African countries such as Senegal and Guinea have flooded Zimbabwe’s major cities and towns running business ventures ranging from clothing retail, electrical shops and selling cell phone gadgets and accessories.

The warning was also extended to established foreign companies that are opposed to the controversial indigenization law. The law prescribes that foreign companies cede 51 percent of their stake to black Zimbabweans.

The regulations are set to take effect shortly on March 1.

Government dispute

The gazetting of the regulations immediately sparked a fresh dispute within the country’s inclusive government. Prime minister Tsvangirai said the regulations were published without due process as detailed in the constitution. He also pointed out that the law was short-sighted and destructive as it would scare away potential investors who were willing to give the inclusive government the benefit of doubt.

The MDC views the law as too harsh for a country that still needs to attract foreign investment and recover from a decade long unprecedented economic recession. They blame the collapse of the economy on what they describe as Zanu-PF’s populist policies.

Late last year Germany protested to the Zimbabwe government AAG after threatened to expel Bonn-based international courier services firm DHL unless it appointed a Zimbabwean to head its local operation.

"It is with great concern that we learned about the threats which were put forward against a German company in Harare by members of a group called Affirmative Action Group,” reads part of the letter by Matthias Schumacher, first secretary and deputy head of mission.

“This kind of action highly endangers our recent efforts to resuscitate Zimbabwean-German business relations which are part of the broader relations between Zimbabwe and the EU (European Union),” the embassy said.

Politics / Wicked, Ungodly People Around -jonathan by OneNaija(m): 10:09am On Feb 18, 2010
The office of the acting president, Dr. Jonathan, has alerted the nation to a grand plan by some people he desrcibed as "wicked and unGodly" to pull his government down.

In a statement, on Wednesday, the spokesman of the acting president, Mr. Ima Niboro, said the enemies of Jonathan had voted billions of naira to fight the acting president.

The statement entitled “of N300 Billion and other absurd tales!”, read: “Today, the first instalment of the planned and well coordinated media onslaught against the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, was published in a national newspaper” [not the Nigerian Tribune], “alleging that he (the Acting President) approved the expenditure of a whopping N300 billion, for both pro-Yar'Adua rallies and those that were in his interest.” The report also claimed that members of the National Assembly were bribed to do their patriotic duty to save the nation from drift.

“It can be recalled that a few days ago, there was an allegation of a purported release of two billion US dollars from the Excess Crude Account to governors to facilitate their endorsement of Jonathan as Acting President.

“While we commend the Chairman of the Governor’s Forum, Dr. Bukola Saraki, for dealing satisfactorily with that allegation in a rejoinder, it is interesting to note that two billion dollars translate to roughly N300 billion. There is, therefore, no question that both allegations emanate from the same source.

advertisement

“We know those behind these publications. Nigerians have come to know them as careerists in power. But we see them as misguided elements determined to exceed their call of duty and play God over the affairs of the Nation.

“They are wicked and ungodly and their time is up! Never, again, must we allow our nation to be strangulated by a privileged few who will rather fiddle with our common wealth while the nation burns.

“We are aware that they have set aside a huge war chest in billions of naira to bring the Jonathan Acting Presidency to disrepute by any means possible. It is, therefore, hardly surprising that as cunny as these allegations obviously sound, they still get mention in our media space. We are fully on the tracks of this so-called group; this unfortunate band of liars. In the fullness of time, they shall be brought to book.

“We find no need to dignify the N300 billion allegation with a response. What is more, those selling this lie are careful to state that the money was procured from a certain businessman, who is to be settled in a matter of weeks by “a huge oil contract.”

“Three hundred billion naira sourced from one man at a go? We demand to know who this businessman is. Anyone that keeps liquid cash of N2 billion dollars to bribe people belongs only in jail! Huge oil contract? Maybe Nigerians need to ask those who have been involved in handing out such contracts how such quid pro quo deals are done.

“Let me use this medium to reiterate that we shall not be deterred by campaigns of calumny or any other method whatsoever in our collective efforts to reform this nation, and change our ways of doing things once and for all. The acting president is determined, and he is counting on the total support of all Nigerians”, the statement concluded.

Politics / Lawyer Asks Court To Declare Yar’adua ‘dead’ by OneNaija(m): 12:07am On Feb 17, 2010
Another layer of controversy has being added to the long absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua from the country, as a lawyer, Peremobowei Okele, on Monday went before a Federal High Court in Abuja to seek for a declaration that the absence of Mr. Yar’Adua and the consequent abandonment of his office since November 23, 2009 constitute ‘death’, resignation or permanent incapacity.

In an originating summons which has Mr. Yar’Adua as the first defendant, the Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan, as second defendant, and the Attorney-General of the Federation as third defendant, Mr. Okele is seeking for a declaration that the absence of the 1st Defendant from Nigeria and the consequent abandonment of the functions of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from the 23rd of November, 2009 constitute permanent incapacity within the meaning of section 146(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

He is also seeking for a declaration that by virtue of the ‘death’, or resignation or permanent incapacity of the 1st Defendant, the Office of President has become vacant within the meaning of section 146(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

Exercise executive powers

The lawyer, in the suit presently before Adamu Bello, also seeks a declaration that by virtue of the ‘death’, or resignation or permanent incapacity of the 1st Defendant and the consequent vacancy in the Office of President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, the 2nd Defendant is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as contemplated by section 146(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

Furthermore, for an order directing the 2nd Defendant to forthwith and without further assurance begin to exercise all executive powers of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, conferred by section 5(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999. Mr Bello, the trial judge, has fixed the matter for March 9, 2010 for mention.

Politics / Breaking News: Rilwan Lukman, Petroleum Minister Resigns by OneNaija(m): 10:03pm On Feb 15, 2010
Petroleum Minister, Mr. Rilwan Lukman has resigned his appointment with immediate effect.

Lukman’s resignation is coming on the heels of report of a possible cabinet change by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.

The reason for the resignation of the Petroleum Minister was not immediately known as at press time. But sources told Pointblanknews.com that Lukman’s decision may not be unconnected with his frosty relationship with the Acting President.

Vice President Jonathan had in December 2009 instructed Lukman, minister of state for petroleum resources; Odein Ajumogobia and others to cancel any travel plans for the holiday to enable them find a solution to the lingering fuel crisis rocking the entire country.

But Lukman ignored the directive from the then Vice President and left for Vienna on a British Airways flight from Abuja.

He is said to be one of those die-hard Yar’Adua loyalist who have vowed not to work under the Acting Presidency of Jonathan

Fellow Nigerians, as we all know, our dear President, His Excellency, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, has been receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia for some time now. Naturally, his absence from the country has generated considerable interest and a heated national debate.

Today, the National Assembly passed a resolution mandating me to act as President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In following the extant provisions of the 1999 Constitution to arrive at this decision, the leadership and members of the National Assembly have shown great courage, statesmanship and patriotism. I salute them all.

In the same vein, I will like to commend all the other political actors and national leaders, particularly the former heads of state, elder statesmen, governors of the 36 States and other leaders of political groups, civil society organisations, the media, and, indeed, all Nigerians, for their invaluable contributions and counsel. Our security services also deserve our special commendation for their loyalty and devotion to duty during this trying period.

The circumstances in which I find myself assuming office today as acting president of our country are uncommon, sober and reflective. More than ever, therefore, I urge all Nigerians as a people of faith in God, to pray fervently for the full recovery of our dear president and his early return.

The events of the recent past have put to the test, our collective resolve as a democratic nation. I am delighted to note that our nation has demonstrated resilience and unity of purpose. Today affords us time to reconnect with ourselves and overcome any suspicions, hurts and doubts, which had occurred. In all these, there are no winners and no losers, because by the Grace of God, we have, once again, succeeded in moving our country forward. We have all shown that our unity as a people, our love for this country, and our hope for its great future cannot be shaken.

It is now time for us to move on in a more determined manner to tackle the various challenges which we face as a nation. Our march towards Vision 20:2020 is irreversible.

Therefore, we see a need to prioritise on a few of the most critical areas which continue to plague our effort at engendering meaningful economic growth and development.

Some of these critical sectors include power, infrastructure, security, generation of employment and business opportunities for our teeming young men and women.

Fellow Nigerians, the Federal Government will take every step necessary to consolidate the gains of amnesty in the Niger Delta and execute the post-amnesty programme. I, therefore, appeal to all concerned to be patient, as there can be no meaningful development without peace and security.

As regards the Jos crisis, government will endeavour to sustain the peace and find a lasting solution to the recurring crisis in Plateau State. In the meantime, culprits of the heinous crimes committed in the recent incident will face the full weight of the law. I want to restate that government will not tolerate the culture of impunity that is fast becoming an unwelcome part of our socio-political life.

Our commitment to ensuring the security of lives and property in all parts of the country will also be pursued with renewed zeal. The Nigeria Police and other security services would be given new impetus to perform their duties, even while respecting the human rights of Nigerians. They are fully expected to produce corresponding results. There shall be no excuses for failure. Nigerians deserve to be fully protected at all times nationwide.

Fellow Nigerians, one of the cardinal commitments of this administration is our commitment to good governance, accountability and transparency. We shall continue to pursue these policy objectives with all the seriousness they deserve. In particular, the war against corruption will be prosecuted more robustly. We will, therefore, strengthen the capacity of the anti-corruption agencies and give them a free hand to prosecute the anti corruption war.

Let me; once again, commend the people of Anambra State for the successful conduct of the recent gubernatorial election. This has shown that Nigerians can conduct free, fair and credible elections. The Anambra election has, however, exposed some weaknesses in our electoral system and government is determined to plug these loopholes as we approach the next general election in 2011. I want to reassure all Nigerians and our friends around the world that our determination to ensure that the sanctity of the electoral rights of our people shall not be compromised.

Let me, on behalf of the Nigerian people; appreciate the international community for their goodwill and understanding in our efforts at national development and consolidation of our democracy. Nigeria will continue to play a deserving role in regional and global affairs.

On a personal note, I am deeply humbled and honoured by this great call to duty. I am fully aware of the responsibilities reposed in me and I want to reassure all Nigerians that this is a sacred trust, which I shall discharge to my fullest abilities.

Thank you and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria
Politics / Abdulmutallab: Malaysia Nabs Two Nigerian Accomplices by OneNaija(m): 7:16pm On Jan 29, 2010
Ten terror suspects including two Nigerians said to be accomplices of Christmas Day United States jetliner failed bomber, Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, have been arrested in Malaysia, the country has announced.

They include four men from Syria, two from Nigeria and one each from Yemen and Jordan, said Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, head of a rights group that assists people held under Malaysia's Internal Security Act, which allows indefinite detention without trial.
The country has not released the name of the suspected terrorists.

They were among 50 people arrested by police while attending a religious talk by a Syrian university lecturer on January 21 at a home near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's largest city, Syed Ibrahim said. The others were later released.

The Malaysian government-owned New Straits Times newspaper said foreign anti-terrorism agencies told authorities that the suspects were in Malaysia and were linked to a young Nigerian man accused of trying to detonate a bomb hidden in his underwear during a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day.

The newspaper did not say how it obtained the information or how they were linked.
Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein refused to give other details yesterday, saying it might jeopardize investigations. He said the detainees posed a “serious threat” to security and their arrests were based on co-operation with foreign intelligence agencies.

“This is a very good wake-up call for us because the playground for terrorists is no longer just one nation. The whole world is their playground,” he said.
The suspects include students at a Malaysian university, said Syed Ibrahim, the rights activist. He urged the government to either charge them to court or release them.

Activists identified one detainee as Aiman Al Dakkak, a Syrian university lecturer who has been living in Malaysia since 2003. He gave regular religious classes but did not advocate terrorism to his students, said Muhamad Yunus Zainal Abidin, a Malaysian who was arrested at the class and released several hours later.

Interrogators did not ask those freed about any ties to AbdulMutallab, Muhamad Yunus told a news conference.
Over the past decade, Malaysian authorities have held more than 100 militant suspects, mainly alleged members of the al-Qaida-linked Southeast Asian network Jemaah Islamiyah, which has been blamed for attacks including the 2002 bombing on the Indonesian island of Bali that killed 202 people.

Most were released after being held for years in a northern prison centre. Authorities say they were rehabilitated and no longer posed a threat. None was ever charged in court.

Politics / Bbc World News: Lagos Aims To Be Africa's Model Megacity by OneNaija(m): 9:31am On Jan 28, 2010
By Egon Cossou
Africa Business Report, BBC World News

Lagos is the financial heart of Nigeria - the most populous nation in Africa, and it is a teeming tangle of humanity and enterprise.

Megacity model
A city within the city aims to turn Lagos into a financial powerhouse

The economy of Lagos state is thought to be worth around $33bn, despite the chronic overcrowding, crumbling infrastructure and hellish traffic.

Expansion continues at a breakneck speed and part of the expansion plans for Lagos include an ambitious new city within a city.

The Eko Atlantic project promises to turn Lagos into a hugely important financial powerhouse.

Under construction

Enormous quantities of rock are poured into the sea to build what is already being called the great wall of Lagos.

Prince Adesegun Oniru, Waterfront Development

A mile and a half out in the Atlantic ocean, the city is taking a stand against the sea. Lagos is creating a seven kilometre long wall to hold back the waves.

For more than 100 years the sea has been eating away the shoreline of Victoria island in Lagos - some ten metres disappear every year.

Now Lagos has what it hopes is a permanent solution to the problem of erosion.

The idea is to claw back the lost land and build a new, futuristic city on it. It is to be called Eko Atlantic City.

Every day some 90 trucks arrive weighed down by granite mined from the neighbouring city of Abeokuta and the wall is advancing some seven or eight metres a day.

Tackling overcrowding

Prince Adesegun Oniru, in charge of waterfront development, says the project was put together to protect Lagos because everything was gradually eroding away.

The population of metropolitan Lagos is about 18 million

"Population growth within Lagos is always a problem," he says, "We have 18 million people that reside in Lagos State so you need projects like this to draw people away from the centre and spread them to areas like this."

Lagos is overpopulated and thousands more people flood into the city every month.

Rental prices for accommodation are some of the highest on the continent.

The new city within a city will offer residents constant power and water, good roads and a light rail system to whisk them around a financial centre reminiscent of Manhattan in New York.

Four hundred thousand people will live and work in the new city, but first they will have to build it.

It is a big job to reverse, in just a few years, what nature has taken decades to do.

"You need some huge dredging vessels. The vessels we are employing are some of the largest in the world," says David Frame, the lead engineer on Eko Atlantic City project.

The giant dredgers from China pump 400,000 tonnes of sand a day into the space between the shore and the wall.

Eko Atlantic City will need as much sand as the Palm One project in Dubai.

Lessons from Dubai

Prince Adesegun Oniru believes Lagos has much to learn from Dubai's troubles.

"The first lesson to learn as far as I am concerned, is not to saturate the market," he says.

"Finish a particular area completely and then move on to another - the moral is: don't saturate the market with too much properties."

A project this size has never been seen in west Africa before.

Lagos has big ambitions to go with its big population. It wants to become Africa's model megacity

Sports / Nigeria To Bid For 2020 Olympics Games by OneNaija(m): 4:30pm On Jan 17, 2010
FOLLOWING the plan by the National Sports Commission to privatise the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, the Lagos State Government has signified interest to take over the facility.

Tribunesports scooped that the Lagos State Government has submited its bidding documents to the technical committee set up by the NSC to look into privatisation of the facility . And the bidding, according to the source is receiving favourable consideration from the committee which is expected to storm the state for on the spot assessment any moment from now.

The decision of the state government to acquire the National Stadium was as a result of its plan to bid for the 2020 Olympics. The government had argued that for it to actualise its dream of hosting the Olympics, it need a world-class arena and as such decided to take over the running of the National Stadium and carry out some renovations instead of constructing a new sporting arena of Olympics standard.

The source added that some structure would be put up such as a standard Games Village around the arena to boost the chances of getting the hosting rights.
