Cassava can be Nigeria’s mega export earner – World Bank THE World Bank has aid that Nigeria as the largest producer of cassava, could develop its econonmy by exporting quality cassava and other commodities other than oil. Mr. Omo Ruhl, the World Bank Country Director in Nigeria, said this when he featured at the Forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) last week in Abuja. “You have the most cassava in the world but apparently it is not the best, the quality may not be there so let us focus on how we increase the standard,” he said. The Country Director said that one of the greatest problems with the Nigerian economy was its over reliance on oil, as well as the mono-revenue and export economy system. “Nigeria is not a mono-product economy, it is a mono-revenue economy and a mono-export economy because in the other sectors there are no exports, very low fiscal revenues, that is where your challenge is but oil is only 17 per cent of your GDP, 83 per cent is everything else taken together,” Ruhl said. He added that Nigeria stood to benefit a lot in developing its agriculture and the wholesale and retail services sectors, which, he said, were actually bigger than the oil sector. “Oil is actually the fourth largest sector of the Nigerian economy, the largest sector is agriculture, the second largest sector is wholesale and retail and services is the third largest. So what Nigeria should do is focus on propelling these other sectors forward so that they can also export, so that you are less dependent on oil and finding ways of generating revenues for the government for legitimate investment in infrastructure, health and education,” he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/01/cassava-can-be-nigeria%E2%80%99s-mega-export-earner-world-bank/

Posted by: alj harem onlytruth, we are brothersYou are new to nairaland. That is why you say that. I don't hate anyone, I cannot afford to hate anyone. I am a Christian, and the top pastor in my church is Yoruba man whom I admire so much. Nothing can change that. It is not even likely that Ndigbo hate anyone in Nigeria. That is why they live EVERYWHERE in Nigeria. But let me show you a little example of hate. Take the Enugu international airport for example. Successive Nigerian leaders refused to upgrade it to international standard for 43 years. Even Yar adua who announced its upgrade refused to append signature on paper and sat on it until his death. ![]() It took a Goodluck Jonathan presidency for Enugu International airport to receive presidential signature. Meanwhile, in all those years, my people kept dying on the 7 -10 hour drive to Lagos and Abuja to board international flights. Who do you think love who in this story? The person who lives in all parts of Nigeria, or the person who sat on Enugu International airport upgrade for decades? Search your conscience. |
Posted by: alj harem well i always wish you well in everything you do and also wish you can view all nigerians as equals not only igbo this igbo thatI say Amen to that! ![]() I never be the first to wish anyone ill. You will not wish me bad and live to tell the story. If you doubt me, take a look at Nigeria and tell me why the country has not known peace or REAL progress since 1970. Face the topics and air your views. Let me air mine too, no matter how offensive they might seem to you. I hate no one. I am only looking out for my group's interest like every other Nigerian groups. I am enjoying my constitutional rights. |

Before 1970, the Israeli airforce was already beginning to fly the F-4 Phantoms and downing Soviet MIG 21s in the operation Rimon -20. "On July 30, 1970, the tension peaked: An IAF ambush resulted in a large scale air brawl between IAF planes and MiGs flown by Soviet pilots — five MiGs were shot down, while the IAF suffered no losses. Fear of further escalation and superpower involvement brought the war to a conclusion. By its end of August 1970, the Israeli Air Force had claimed 111 aerial kills while admitting losing only four aircraft to Arab fighters." Wikipedia (when convenient) ![]() |

Posted by: Katsumoto Why do you persist in debating those who are obviously more knowledgeable than you?I told [b]PhysicsMHD to leave the history of who supported who and the war behind. I would advise you to do the same. All I said was that if Israel had supported Biafra militarily (to clarify that I also mean weapons and personnel -fighter pilots), the rest of Nigeria (the Capital Lagos for instance) would have seen real war. Israel started receiving British, America and French military aircraft support from 1948. During the 1948 war with Egypt, Israel flew the following aircrafts: (American)Boeing B-17s, (British)Bristol Beaufighters, de Havilland Mosquitoes and (American)P-51D Mustangs. Two American and two British, my favorites being the American B-17s and the Mustangs. ![]() Yes, France became a major aircraft supplier to Israel in the 1950s, but they embargoed Israel just before the 1967, 6-day war, which made Israel to turn to America for aircrafts, as well as significantly increasing its own aircraft production. Israel could not have supported Biafra militarily, because yes Britain was supporting Nigeria, and Britain was an old Israeli ally. Secondly, they could also run into the Soviets which could mean drawing the superpowers on opposing sides - America (supporting Israel & Biafra), against and Nigerian/British/Soviet alliance. This partly explains why America stayed away from the war. I will attach pictures of British and America aircrafts for Israel as far back as 1948 |
Posted by: alj harem onlytruth,.,. there is this igbo proverb i want to tell you,.,. i pray you take it to heartDude, why are you threatening my life from thread to thread? And why do you always assume you would live? You insult and abuse me and my Igbo people on EVERY thread, and make threats whenever you see something you don't like. I am exercising my constitutionally guaranteed right of FREE SPEECH. If you don't like my views, tough luck! ![]() For your comment above, I wish YOU and your entire EXTENDED family death. !diot. |
After going through comments on this thread, I really think that folks are underestimating the extent of GEJ followership in Eastern Nigeria. I don't think there is any person in the East for now that can upstage GEJ. Sorry guys. It is GEJ all the way - Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Delta, Cross river, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers, Imo and Abia. Like ndu_chucks said, he will even get votes in the North. The SW is also very much in play for him. So, his victory is chiseled on titanium. ![]() |
Smart move bro Jona! ![]() Let me tell you guys something. If you think you have seen a dogged politician in Ikemba, wait till you meet Bianca! She is a leader waiting for her time. Jonathan is only trying to launch her political career. I strongly suspect she may have asked for "it". Just make Ikemba no catch you o. ![]() All the same, great move bro Jona! ![]() |
Why do these folks always talk as if the rest of Nigerians don't have a say in how this country turns out? So, suddenly they are realizing that being without power for long is uncomfortable? Suddenly Nigeria has to disintegrate because they are out of power? SMH Jonathan should remain strong and focused to deliver a fair country. ![]() |
Presidential primary: ACF condemns Jonathan’s emergence … Free-for-all averted at yesterday’s meeting From ISMAIL OMIPIDAN, Kaduna Wednesday, January 26, 2011 The wisdom and maturity, shown yesterday by the chairman of the foremost northern socio-cultural group, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Major General Ibrahim Haruna (retd), saved the meeting from degenerating into a free-for-all, Daily Sun learnt. This is even as the group came hard on the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, describing the emergence of President Goodluck Jonathan, as the candidate of the party for this year’s presidential election, as legally and morally wrong. In a communiqué signed by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Anthony Sani, and made available to newsmen at the end of its meeting, yesterday evening, the group noted that “following an extended review of the just concluded primary elections in the country, the meeting came to the conclusion that the process within most of the major political parties fell short of the expectations of Nigerians as they were thoroughly compromised by an appalling lack of internal democracy within the parties. “Manipulations, intimidations and other illegalities (were employed). These practices will greatly undermine our democracy and make it almost impossible for otherwise credible people to participate in the electoral process in the future. “In particular, the ACF is disappointed with the outcome of the primary elections in the ruling party, the PDP. The emergence of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate is legally and morally wrong because it is a violation of that party’s constitution which clearly requires that under the zoning/rotation formula, a northerner be returned as candidate in the 2011 elections. In this regard, and in the light of its principled stand on fairness and rule of law, the ACF rejects the outcome of the PDP presidential primaries.” The meeting, Daily Sun learnt, had hardly commenced, when some members openly challenged the chairman to explain why an impeachment proceeding should not be commenced against him for allegedly absenting himself from six consecutive meetings of the group, where crucial and critical decisions were taken concerning zoning, before the various parties held their presidential primaries. Although, the chairman’s tenure ends this month, and he is entitled to a second term, members opposed to his style of leadership, because he vehemently opposed the position of ACF on zoning, had planned to remove him yesterday, believing that he would not be attending yesterday’s meeting. But when he showed up at the meeting, which was aimed at meeting with the various Presidential candidates, the aggrieved members changed tactics and decided to confront the chairman openly, ostensibly to embarrass him, a situation that resulted in pandemonium, as the chairman was openly accused of being anti-north. One of the leaders told Daily Sun in confidence that “the meeting became much tensed when this issue came up and many members were asking for the head of the chairman who has not been attending meetings for almost six consecutive times in the past. “ But, to make the matter worse, the former secretary of the Political committee, Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammad stood up to defend the chairman when he said that the agenda of the day was not to discuss the issue of the Chairman’s behaviour towards the Forum in the past and his anti- Arewa stance on national political issues. “It took the wisdom of some of the elders to make sure that there was no pandemonium during the meeting, and they later suspended the discussion on General Haruna’s removal from office and faced the issue of the day.” Once normalcy returned, the National Working Committee (NEC) of the ACF met with the representatives of the Northern Presidential candidates of the various political parties contesting the forthcoming elections. Among those who sent representatives to meet with the Arewa leaders, were the Vice President, Alhaji Namadi Sambo who was represented by Ambassador Hassan Adamu, one of the leaders of the Jerry Gana-led Northern Political Forum; the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) Candidate, Governor Ibrahim Shekarau was represented by Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Yakkasai (Kano state commissioner for Lands and Survey and Shekarau’s Campaign coordinator), Professor Iya Abubakar, represented ACN’s presidential candidate, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, while the Congress For Progressive Change ( CPC) Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) only sent a message of solidarity to the meeting. Speaking with newsmen before going into another session, a chieftain of ACF and member of the Executive Council, Alhaji Ahmed Hassan Alghazali said that President Goodluck Jonathan has broken the political bond between the north and the south for allegedly imposing himself as PDP Presidential candidate for 2011. He said “against our will, we allowed Obasanjo to contest the presidency in 1999 in order to allow the rotational presidency take root. When Obasanjo misruled this country for eight years and it came to our, these people turned blind eye and say no. “If Jonathan is voted in the next presidential election, he will not vacate power; he will remain there and even work against the Nigerian Federation. He may even bring about the break up of this country as Sudan is presently going through. So, we will not allow this to happen. “We cannot go for any other political parties because PDP rules this country whether by hook or crook. They control all the machinery. Nobody is going to any general election. There should not be any election because it is going to be a farce”. “We cannot continue like this because for everything there is a beginning and there is an end. This is the end of the fraud in Nigeria. The only option now is for them to extend time for the election and go back to the normal primary election system whereby members of political parties are allowed to decide candidates to vote. PDP did not have any primaries at all. There may be no Nigeria after this election and I hope it does not take place.” Ends. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2011/jan/26/national-26-01-2011-09.htm |
^^ Like I said, leave the war behind. Don't try to revise anything. Thank you. ![]() |
Posted by: Ileke-IdI And they call the Northerners the terrorists. Chei!!!And who told you the bombs are local? You're becoming dumber and dumber frankly. ![]() |
Posted by: PhysicsMHD Ok? And? What do all these hypotheticals have to do with supposed revisionism of my posts?Look, dude, I know you would like us all to take your words as law but it just falls far short to be swallowed hook line and sinker by smart folks. Only slow folks like alj harem would do that. Israel did not support Biafra for the same reason most western alliance nations did not. To do that would mean going against another ally -Britain. That is pretty much clear enough for me. Where were all the Soviet thermonuclear arsenals during the '67 Arab/Israeli war? Real facts about that war is too sensitive to even discuss here anyway. So let's just drop the "Biafra was supported by France, Israel, Haiti, bla bla". The war has been over for 43years. Let's leave it alone. |
Posted by: PhysicsMHD Are you under the impression that the Israeli military capability could be compared to Soviet military capability? Surely even you don't believe that. The Soviets have never had superior military hardware compared to US/Israeli ones, which explains why Israel won ALL conflicts with Soviet equipped Arab armies. Mind you that this is on African soil and Biafra only needed to balance the That would be a HUGE morale booster to the Biafran military. |
Posted by: asha 80 what is the need for the bolded?Just putting things in proper context. ![]() Britain had military personnel in the Nigerian military. France did not have such in Biafran military. Soviets and Egyptians actually flew Nigerian MIGs. How many Israeli pilots flew Biafran Phantoms (famous Israel/American warplanes)? Imagine if Israel had supplied Biafra with Phantoms together with pilots. So let's stop all these lies. |
Posted by: PhysicsMH The Irish, the People's Republic of China (through propaganda, not arms), Israel, France, Tanzania, and Papa Doc Duvalier-controlled-Haiti supported Biafra, and clearly not for the reasons those three I mentioned earlier probably did. A few, such as China or France, supported Biafra for economic reasons (potential economic gain), and some countries, such as Israel or Haiti supported Biafra out of sympathy with Biafra's situation. Israel sympathized with the pogrom/persecution aspect of Biafra's situation and Haiti sympathized with them because there were Igbos in Biafra and Igbos constituted a major portion of Haiti's ancestry/descent.Sometimes your writings are nothing more than pure revisionism. ![]() You mentioned that China and Ireland supported Biafra non-militarily, but quickly followed it up with the bolded, which will be interpreted to mean that Israel supported Biafra militarily. Even France did not begin "SCANTY" military support until much later in the war. Too late in the day. There is no way to speak of French support in the same context as British support of Nigeria. If France and Israel supported Biafra fully, there is for instance no way Cameroon could have blockaded Biafra from the eastern border. Most discerning folks would feel insulted at emphasis on so called French and Israeli support. Israeli and Haitian support never went beyond humanitarian support. If Israel had fought on Biafra's side, Lagos would have been obliterated. ![]() |
As an Igbo person, I really am not happy that this thread, which should throw more light on why Igbos and other southerners are frequently killed in northern Nigeria, are being derailed by all these talks about US Nigerian diaspora population. ![]() What do you say to the fact that SUDAN hosts the largest Hausa diaspora population? ![]() What do you say about the fact that northern Nigerians in Northern SUDAN are in MILLIONS? ![]() Sudan is a country where Arabs are killing Africa groups. Why are we crying that northerners are killing southerners in the north, when they learn their trade in Sudan? ![]() These are the issues I want to highlight here, not some local ethnic bu11sh%t. |
Posted by: isale_gan2 It's not just used in relation to Africans. I've heard Oyinbos refer to themselves or others as being tribal. For example, amongst the elite who guard their territory and their social standings, they'll refer to themselves as being tribal, or others will call them "tribal." Or sometimes, the word tribal will be substituted for the word "clannish." I'm not a linguist and won't get bogged down with the evolution of the word, but I do believe it is used for a variety of groups not just monkeys. lolFrankly, I've never researched this. You sound correct honestly. But how did it become African almost exclusively? I have heard "ethnicity" more than "tribe". |
Posted by: Beaf The OP is a silly clown that can't seem to tell left from right. What does "de-tribalised" mean? Is it "de-monkeyed?"Totally agree. ![]() The OP de drink water from rainfall (o na anu mmiri enu -in Igbo). Can you quench thirst that way? NO! |
Posted by: Beaf The word "tribe" originally meant a pack of monkey's.So how did it end up in African lexicon? Abi somebody de call us monkey indirectly. hehehe! ![]() |
Well, dapobear admitted proudly to be a tribalist. End of story. This alj harem is running around trying to dispute it. There are really sick people in Nigeria. I like dapobear because he does not pretend. |
Attached is the exact information from the website referenced by X-factoria, and he went ahead to conclude that Nigerians in UK are 3m. I wonder why Nigerians are sometimes incapable of telling themselves the simple truth. Since when did "estimate" equal "accurate"? And he is quick to accuse innocent folks of lying. Isn't spinning the worst form of lying?

I also found out that most of the northern Nigerians in northern Sudan are farmers. What happened to farming in northern Nigeria? Why go all the way to Sudan to farm? Can't they farm in Nigeria? |
Posted by: KnowAll This people are not Nigerians, these people have settled in Sudan even b4 Nigeria had her independence. The hausa's/ Fulanis have been known to travel far & wide especially in d Sahel & desert regions. There are Hausas/fulanis tribes from Mauritania in western part of Africa to Sudan in d East. These people have made these journey 100's of years ago. Because of d racist policy of Northern Sudan they do not want to give these settlers who have being in Sudan from time memorial citizenship in effect making them stateless. How come they are Nigerians & not Niger republic citizen or even Malian how do u seperate one hausa from one these countries from another. If they deport them to Nigeria, Nigeria should deport them back, we should not be accepting deportees whose family has settled in d Sudan 300 or 400 years ago, no wonder there is an increase in Boko Haram activitis & other insurgency in d north.Smart observation. ![]() Most of the responders so far are retards. They can't even see the gist of the story. I don't care where a Nigerian chooses to live in the world, provided they do not bring terrorism to Nigeria. Sudan is known worldwide for extreme brand of Islam and terrorism. My worry is that I don't want bombs exploding in Enugu. That's all. |
