The Amalgamation Of Nigeria Was A Fraud

by

Richard Akinjide, QC, SAN

July 9, 2000

Lagos - I Was in the first cabinet that was overthrown by the military in this country. I entered parliament in December 12, 1959. And I remained in Parliament until January 15, 1966 when the Government was overthrown. I was the Federal Minister of Education in that cabinet.

I woke up in the morning in my official house in Ikoyi to discover that my telephone was not working. I had never experienced coup before nor did I know that it was a coup, thinking it was just a telephone fault; until a colleague of mine in the cabinet Chief Abiodun Akerele, came in and told me there had been a military coup. So I had the fortune or the misfortune of being a victim of the first coup ever in this country.

Many people may not know that I spent 18 months in detention in prisons across the country. I've spent the time in Kirikiri prison, Ilesha prison, Ibadan prison and the Abeokuta prison Two of us who were in Balewa's government emerged when the military handed over to civilians in 1979 as part of the civilian Government. In Balewa's government, Alhaji Shehu Shagari was the Minister of Works while I was the Minister of Education. When the Military handed over to us after about 14 years, Shagari emerged as the President, while I became the Attorney - General and Minister of Justice. Again, Shagari's government was overthrown just a few months after I left the cabinet. Of course, we suspected it was coming.

A lot of things that happened between that period and now would never see the light of the day. When you are in government, you know a lot of things; you see a lot of things. A lot of things you know or did or saw will die with you. This is the practice the whole world. People have asked me to write my memoirs, I just laugh because there are certain things I can never reveal. When I was in Tafawa Balewa's Cabinet, all Cabinet ministers had access to written intelligence report every month. That was the practice at that time. But when Shagari came in, for reasons, which I cannot explain, that practice was no longer followed. But by virtue of my duties as the Attorney - General and as a member of the National Security Council, I continued to have access to some sensitive matters.

Nigeria is a very complex country. Our problems did not start yesterday. It started about 1884. Lord Lugard came here about 1894 and many people did not know that Major Lugard was not originally employed by the British Government. He was employed by companies. He was first employed by East Indian Company, by the Royal East African Company and then by the Royal Niger Company. It was from the Royal Niger Company that he transferred to the British government. Unless you know this background, you will not know the root causes of our problems. The interest of the Europeans in Africa and indeed Nigeria was economic and it's still economic. They have no permanent friends and no permanent interests. Neither their interests nor their friends are permanent. Nigeria was created as British sphere of interests for business. In 1898, Lugard formed the West African Frontier Force initially with 2,000 soldiers and that was the beginning of our problems.

Anybody who wants to know the root cause of all the coups and our present problems, and who does not know the evolution Nigeria would just be looking at the matter superficially. Our problems started from that time. And Lugard was what they called at that time imperialist. A number of British soldiers, businessmen, politicians were very patriotic. But I must warn you; they were operating in the interest of their country. Lugard became a Lord.

Nigerians, too, should operate in the interest of their country. When Lugard formed the West African Frontier Force with 2,000 troops, about 90 percent of them were from the North mainly from the Middle belt. And his dispatches to London between that time and January 1914 are extremely interesting. Lugard came here for a purpose ant that purpose was British interest. Between 1898 and 1914, he sent a number of dispatches to London which led to the Amalgamation of 1914.

The Order - in - Council was drawn up in November 1913 signed and came into force in January 1914. In those dispatches, Lugard said a number of things, which are at the root causes of yesterday and today's problems.

The British needed the Railway from the North to the Coast in the interest of British business. Amalgamation of the South (not of the people) became of crucial importance to British business interest. He said the North and the South should be amalgamated. Southern Nigeria came into existence on January 1900 ... At the Centenary of the fall of Benin, I wrote a piece in a number of papers but before I published the piece, I sent a copy to the Oba of Benin. So when Benin was conquered in 1896, it made the creation of the Southern Nigerian protectorate possible on January 1, 1900.

If you remember, Sokoto was not conquered until 1903. So, there was no question of Nigeria at that time. After the conquest of Sokoto, they were able to create the northern Nigerian protectorate. Lugard went full blast and created what was to be known as the protectorate of Northern Nigeria. What is critical and important are the reasons Lugard gave in his dispatches. They are as follows: He said the North is poor and they have no resources to run the protectorate of the North. That they have no access to the sea; that the South has resources and have educated people.

The first Yoruba lawyer was called to the Bar in 1861. Therefore, because it was not the policy of the British Government to bring the taxpayers money to run the protectorate, it was in the interest of the British business and the British taxpayer that there should be Amalgamation. But what the British amalgamated was the Administration of the North and South and not the people of the North and the South, that is one of the root causes of the problems of Nigeria and the Nigerians.

When the amalgamation took effect, the British government sealed off the South from the North. And between 1914 andl960, that's a period of 46 years, the British allowed minimum contact between the North and South because it was not in the British interest that the North be allowed to be polluted by the educated South. That was the basis on which we got our independence in 1960 when I was in the parliament. I entered Parliament on December 12, 1959. When the North formed a political party, the northern leaders called it Northern Peoples Congress (NPC). They didn't call it Nigeria Peoples Congress. That was in accordance with the dictum and policies of Lugard. When Aminu Kano formed his own party, it was called Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) not Nigerian Progressive Union.

It was only Awolowo and Zik who were mistaken that there was anything called Nigeria. Infact, the so-cared Nigeria created in 1914 was a complete fraud. It was created not in the interest of Nigeria or Nigerians but in the interest of the British. And what were the structures created? The structures created were as follows: Northern Nigeria was to represent England; Western Nigeria like Wales; Eastern Nigeria was to be like Scotland. In the British structure, England has permanent majority in the House of Commons. There was no way Wales can ever dominate England, neither can Scotland dominate Britain. But they are very shrewd. They would allow a Scottish man to become Prime Minister. They would allow a Welsh man to become Prime Minister in London but the fact remains that the actual power rested in England.

That was what Lugard created in Nigeria, a permanent majority for the North. The population figure of the North is also a fraud. Infact, a British Colonial Civil Servant who was involved in the fraud was trying to expose it but he was never allowed to publish it. The analysis is as follows: If you look at the map of West Africa, starting from Mauritania to Cameroun and take a population of each country as you move from the coast to the Savannah, the population decreases. Or conversely, as you come from the Desert to the Coast, right from Mauritania to the Cameroun, the population increases. The only exception throughout that zone is Nigeria. Nigeria is the only zone whereby you go from coast to the North, the population increases and you come from the North to the Coast, the population decreases. Well, geographers, anthropologists and population experts, draw your conclusions, Someone has told me the last population census was done by computer, what a nonsense.

A computer is as good as its programmer. A computer will produce what you ask it to produce. I have read this book from cover to cover. This is a fantastic book. I want us to find a way to ensure that as many Nigerians read this book. It is a raw material for future authors. There is one thing which is missing in the book and that is the first broadcast of General Ibrahim Babangida when he assumed power in 1985. That broadcast is very crucial to the economic problems we have today. ... Talking on the first coup, when Balewa got missing, we knew Okotie- Eboh had been Hied, we knew Akintola had been killed. We, the members of the Balewa cabinet started meeting. But how can you have a cabinet meeting without the Prime Minister acting or Prime Minister presiding. So, unanimously, we nominated acting Prime Minister amongst us. Then we continued holding our meetings. Then we got a message that we should all assemble at the Cabinet office. All the Ministers were requested by the G.O.C. of the Nigerian Army, General Ironsi to assemble.

What was amazing at that time was that Ironsi was going all over Lagos unarmed. We assembled there. Having nominated ZANA Diphcharima as our acting Prime Minister in the absence of the Prime Minister, whose where about we didn't know, we approached the acting President, Nwafor Orizu to swear him in because he cannot legitimately act as the Prime Minister except he is sworn- in. Nwafor Orizu refused. He said he needed t contact Zik who was then in West Indies.

Under the law, that is, the Interpretation Act, as acting President, Nwazor Orizu had all the powers of the President. The GOC said he wanted to see all the cabinet ministers. And so we assembled at the cabinet office. Well, I have read in many books saying that we handed over to the military. We did not hand-over. Ironsi told us that "you either hand over as gentlemen or you hand-over by force". These were his words. Is that voluntary hand-over? So we did not hand-over. We wanted an Acting Prime Minister to be in place but Ironsi forced us, and I use the word force advisedly, to handover to him. He was controlling the soldiers.

The acting President, Nwafor Orizu, who did not cooperate with us, cooperated with the GOC. Dr. Orizu and the GOC prepared speeches which Nwafor Orizu broadcast handing over the government of the country to the army. I here state again categorically as a member of that cabinet that we did not hand-over voluntarily. It was a coup. This is a very good book, which everybody must read. It is raw material for future authors. Anybody, who wants to know some of the causes of our problems, military instability should read this book. I even recommend this book to all universities and secondary schools, so that they can know how we get to where we are now. What this book shows is that if anybody stages a coup and if people don't accept it, it would not succeed. What puzzles me is how the author got all these materials. He must have connections in high places to be able to get a lot of these materials.

These materials should not be in the archives, they should be in the public domain so that we know the causes of our problems. I pray that all Nigerians should rise up and say no if anybody seizes a radio station and says "fellow countrymen". I hope that this book will find its way into all university libraries throughout this country, to all secondary school library and abroad. I appeal to the media to give this book a comprehensive and desired review.

The more I open the book, the more I see something to talk about. This book is going to represent one of those chapters in the tragedy of Nigeria. This book is just like horror film because the instability which was started in I966 ... because many of the coups are what I'll call commercial coups. If anything at all, we have to learn a great lesson from this book and also learn a lesson on what happened, who failed or succeed in their coups. When it succeeds. They call it glorious revolution. But when it fails, it is called treason. It is my honour and privilege to present this great and historic book. One of the things I like about the book is the language of the author. He's someone who speaks Englishman's English. He writes Queen's English. Very lucid, very flowing.

If Southern protectorate (former Niger coast protectorate) is to be decoupled from Lagos colony, ie pre-1900, what we would have is Yorubaland on the one hand, and the rest of the south on the other hand.

If there would even be adjustments, it would be minor.

Anyway, I still believe that somehow Nigeria can pull through and stay together. The only problem I have with Nigeria is Northern backwardness and violent culture.
Politics / Re: Photo Of Nigeria After 2015 by Onlytruth(m): 7:55am On Nov 20, 2013
So, the merger between Lagos Colony (Yorubaland) and Southern protectorate (the rest of southern Nigeria) happened in 1900.
Another amalgamation happened in 1914, this time between the North and the Southern protectorates.
The British shrewdly kept this order when they created Eastern and Western regions in the south.
By the cessation of colonization in 1960, the British only knew THREE regions (to EACH of which they even promised to give independence in 1957).

lol Hate is eating up this Demdem guy. I only laid out what will likely happen should Nigeria disintegrate and the guy is about to commit suicide.

Here is a rough history of how Nigeria came to be. All the countries that disintegrated followed old boundaries.
In other words, what was coupled can be DE-coupled. Nothing more.

1862 (January 1): Lagos Island annexed as a colony of Britain

Mr. H.S Freeman became Governor of Lagos Colony (Jan. 22)

1893: Oil Rivers Protectorate renamed Niger Coast Protectorate with Calabar as capital.

1890's: British reporter Flora Shaw, who later married Lord Frederick Lugard, suggests that the country be named "Nigeria" after the Niger River.

1897: The British overthrew Oba Ovonramwen of Benin, one of the last independent West African kings.

1900: The Niger Coast Protectorate, merged with the colony and protectorate of Lagos, was renamed the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria

Sir Lord Fredrick Lugard

1914: The northern and southern protectorates were amalgamated to form Nigeria. Colonial officer Frederick Lugard was governor-general.

1929 (October): Women in the eastern commercial city of Aba held a rowdy but effective and victorious protest against high taxes and low prices of Nigerian exports.

1951: The British decided to grant Nigeria internal self-rule, following an agitation led by the NCNC, Dr Azikiwe’s political party.

1954: The position of Governor was created in the three regions (North, West and East) on the adoption of federalism.

1958: Nigerian Armed Forces transferred to Federal control. The Nigerian Navy was born.

1959: The new Nigerian currency, the Pound, was introduced

1959: Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) and Niger Delta Congress (NDC) formed an alliance to contest parliamentary elections.

1960 (October 1): Independence. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe became Nigeria’s first indigenous Governor General.

Being outside actually opens your eyes to how things REALLY work on the global stage. You cannot see properly from your thatched mud house in Oshogbo.

Back to topic.

Can you show me any new country that was recognized by the UN without internationally recognized borders?

Love them or hate them, the colonialists actually SURVEYED and MAPPED the countries (complete with survey beacons), and documented their findings properly. If you go to Britain today, you will likely see maps from the areas that become Nigeria waaaaaaaay before Nigeria was cobbled together. That is why Bakassi had to be resolved with FULL Anglo-French-German participation.
The British actually conducted HISTORICAL, LINGUISTIC, and ANTHROPOLOGICAL studies before they drew the borders.
The book on the Igbo written by "Basden" in early 1900s captured the Igbo more than any book written by any local Nigerians. The "white man" is thorough. Nigerians are shoddy, and sometimes outright irresponsible.

When Nigerians stated creating regions and state from 1964, they did shoddy jobs and created chaos everywhere. For example, all the states created by Gowon in 1967 are obtuse and senseless, and the borders can NEVER be functional naturally. One may even argue that he created the states invidiously and with a view to punish percieved enemies. But that is not even the point. The point is that there are many agitations for new countries, but the UN cannot take all of them because it will create chaos everywhere. The UN is controlled by 5 permanent powers, 2 - 3 of which are past colonial powers. These powers will try their best to retain control over creation of new nations from their erstwhile territories. As far as the British are concerned, Nigeria is still THREE regions, and they have documents to prove it -THEY CREATED IT.

The countries that disintegrated did so along already existing (internationally recognized) borders.

The truth is that if ever Nigeria divides, it would CERTAINLY be along the regional lines pre or at independence.
Why do I say this?
Because Nigeria was created by a FOREIGN (hence international supervision and control) power. The British brought all the parts together and filed Nigerian papers at the UN. Dividing Nigeria is NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT BRITISH SUPPORT, just like the Bakassi issue was insoluble without British, French and German involvement. This is the mistake Nigeria made before going to the court at The Hague with Cameroon.
The UN does not (and cannot) handle internally splintered countries without "international community" (world powers, some of which are colonial powers).
So, all these "Niger delta", "Middle belt" people thinking of nationhood are actually day dreaming because it will NEVER happen. The British does not recognised them. They recognize Northern, Eastern, and Western Nigeria. They may be persuaded to go back to pre -1906, or pre-1914. Nothing more.

Nobody wants chaos at the UN.

fluteman: You never learn don't you. How can he "change Nigeria for good" when he would have ruled over the spilt blood of other tribes except his own? in your warped and biased mind only I guess.

Just like Abacha and his ilks, nemesis would have caught up with him and his associates ( as it did) , irrespective of the path he took as long as he refused to punish his kinsmen. It could have taken longer or shorter, even the revenge coup could have been more bloodier. Ironsi would not have lasted a day if he had taken your skewed advice......his slaughter would have been served immediately. The majority northern troops and some of their officers realized the plot after the coup, but Ironsi's fake declaration and pretense to serve justice delayed the dooms day.

Justice will always serve!

You are a kid. lol

I wonder whether nemesis caught up with IBB, or Obasanjo, two of the people that implemented what Ironsi should have implemented and ruled for as long as he wanted. If I say IBB now, you will say that he is a Northerner, but I can tell you that that is NOT why he ruled for 8 years.
A better example would be Obasanjo in his second coming as a civilian leader. Those who can see know that he changed Nigeria for ever with his ruthless and smart stratagems. Or do you think that people who think it is their birth right to rule Nigeria never thought about toppling him in a coup? lol
Obasanjo made it IMPOSSIBLE for them. That is the only reason he played his game to the end and handed over to who he hand-picked.
What I meant when I said that Ironsi should have surrounded himself with his ethnic brothers, is common sense because Obasanjo did same in his first four years as a civilian president (I won't elaborate on this). Ironsi was CLUELESS AND TACTLESS. That is why I said that he "prevaricated" and "dilly dallied". He was INDECISIVE.

Let me tell you, nothing scares coup plotters like a RUTHLESS leader. IBB was ruthless, OBJ was ruthless; Abacha was ruthless but tactless.
You need both ruthlessness and tact to strike fear into the cowardly hearts of Nigerian habitual coup plotters.

So, like I said, Ironsi blew it -BIG TIME.

fluteman:

Well, its no surprise how you think.

The lesson learned is that treachery has deadly repercussion. Ironsi refused to punish the Ibo coupist( as confirmed by Gbulie, who, despite being in "prison" in his area, had the capacity to communicate and plan with senior Ibo officers in the Army) who killed Northern and Yoruba leaders while sparing the Ibo leaders. In this, he proved to be an Igbo bigot and deserved his end.

If he had protected himself with only Ibo officers and family, it would have been crystal clear immediately what the game is , and the majority Northern military personnel (armed) would have reacted way sooner. Albeit, they gave him six months to correct the bs but his ibo attitude cost him and a lot of officers from the east.

Justice catches up eventually........no matter how you want to circumvent it

Some of you trolls are very annoying but we have gotten used to you in Nairaland.

Apparently, you did not read the interview and the statement by Gbulie to which I responded.
The fact remains that ALL historians blame Ironsi for his privarications, weak resolve, and dilly dallying which opened the way for his eventual killers to kill him.
It really takes someone who can tell himself the truth to be able to see dangers in clear terms and plan ahead to neutralize them.
Ironsi was the HEAD OF STATE, the first military leader in Nigeria. He had SIX months to tinker with the military any way he wanted, and would have not only survived, but changed Nigeria for ever for good. HE FAILED.

Let me tell you, Nigeria is one of the countries I know that is VERY EASY to rule because Nigerians are inherently cowards and most only attack weak targets. If Ironsi had secured himself with FEW CRACK Igbo officers handpicked and trained for that only purpose of defending him, he would have ruled Nigeria for as long as he wanted. He died because he was living in lalaland of a nirvana nation, albeit one that was on the verge of disintegration.

Islam for Muslims / Re: 17 Igbos, 2 Others Convert To Islam. by Onlytruth(m): 8:20am On Nov 16, 2013
Some of the names I see with the new converts are incongruous and religiously conflicting.

Check this one out for example Nasir Peter Ndubisi

Peter is a CHRISTIAN name, and not just any Christian name but an arch Christian name.
The Muslims do not believe that Jesus is the SON OF GOD. They also do not believe that he rose from the dead. Peter was the head of Jesus' apostles and he epitomized and founded Christianity which no one can be part of if he does not believe that Jesus is God's begotten son.

It is like a Jew converting to Islam and going by the name of Ismaila Yitzhak Sharon undecided
The Muslims believe that Ishmael (not Isaac-Yitzhak) was Abraham's son who was to be sacrificed by the patriach.

So, I will start to take my Muslim Igbo brothers seriously when they shed the last Christianity in their veins after converting.

The sheep might join the cult of lions, but the urge to say "baa" occassionally is often still strong! cheesy

The Ironsi maga -"ism" shocks me sometimes. I wonder whether Ironsi ever understood what a COUP meant.
Once a coup situation appears on the scene (whether as rumour or credible information), I wonder which TRUE soldier would put his life in the hands of a NON-BLOOD brother (which explains why dictators always lined up sensitive security positions with BLOOD BROTHERS). Check history.
For Ironsi to be warned by Madiebo, and for Ironsi to have called in Hassan Katsina and dare Madiebo to repeat his story, tells me that the man did not deserve the slighest of respect when he was cornered at Ibadan. None of his killers respected him. lol

Well, I hope the lesson has been learned. Thats all.

The question I want to ask him is this: HAS THE FULANI TRIED TO LIVE IN PEACE WITH OTHER NIGERIANS? If the answer is affirmative, why are we always reading news about Fulani killing people all over Nigeria, from far North to far South?
Methinks he is being clever by half and saying convenient truth.

Until people in the south learn to call the bluff (and even laugh in their faces) of the core North about war over self determination issues, these threats of war will never cease.

I was watching a TV program where international experts were discussing current national borders of countries. The one thing I took out of it is that GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN FORCED UNITY CAN HAPPEN.
In today's world with information flowing freely across the web and private media houses flourishing, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO IMPOSE UNITY IN ANY NATION. The only way unity can happen and endure is through consensus and agreements, not by force of arms, because EVERYBODY CAN ACCESS ARMS THESE DAYS.
The man may still be living in 1967.

I will open another thread to discuss the only way that Nigeria can divide. cool

igbo2011:

We are all in the same boat. SO if Igbos are exterminated then so will Yoruba, Hausa, Aashanti, ulu, Setwana, Massai, etc. All ethnicities will be exterminated not just igbo. We need to wake up before we wake upwith no land like the native Americans

No, we are NOT in the same boat. That is the point you are missing. undecided

For one, Igbo was ALMOST wiped out between 1967-70, by FELLOW BLACK AFRICANS. Though aided by non-Africans, it would not have happened if there were no Africans who HAPPILY played the script handed to them, and some are still ready (even today ) to do a repeat should they be given the opportunity. It is my humble opinion that I have seen more HATE from FELLOW NIGERIANS than I have seen from a non African towards Igbo for example.

From your logic, it is okay if Igbo are wiped out first because you wrongly assume that other Africans would be wiped out too.
THAT IS A FALLACY OF LOGIC.
There are groups in Nigeria (and I won't mention them because I don't want to aid the enemies of Ndigbo) who would HAPPILY play monkey or ape, or even donkey to powers that want African resources. Before you know it, people like you would have singled Igbo nation out to be wiped out for nothing.
You are playing the "Osuji" script of "why do Igbo people go looking for trouble", and as long as some of us are in Nairaland, we shall try our best to declare you NON-IGBO masquerading as Igbo.

When you came here first with this your name, I was almost sure that you are an avid Igbo hater who want to pit the Igbo against powers that can wipe us out. You have not proven me wrong so far. I know that a lot of Igbo Nairalanders are naive and uninformed, there are still folks like myself who are wise .

I would rather pit my tent with the powers that can wipe people out than pit it against them -common sense.
The Igbo nation is tired of playing "rebel" for ever. Let others try too.

I am HAPPY with the way things are unfolding for Africans, and if they are wiped out, SO BE IT.

Please drop that Igbo in your username.

Thank you.

OP, no doubt you have some solid points, BUT please I beg you in the name of God to change your username to something else that has nothing to do with Igbo.
I am on my knees begging you, PLEASE. sad

You can still make your points with ANY other username. Igbo people have suffered too much (historically: from Haitian uprising to Anglo-Aro war, to Ekumeku, to "Zikist Pan Africanism", to Biafra) for the foolishness of other Africans. The culmination of that suffering was during the Nigerian civil war when ALL major powers of this world (East and West) ganged up against Biafra. The Igbo nation was almost wiped out.
We Igbo should have learned ALL the lessons then, but it seems some of us have not learned it. Smart Igbo people have since learned not to run faster than other Africans. If it is God's will that Africans should be wiped off the surface of the earth, it will not be stopped by one hapless African ethnic group thoroughly caged by the same forces that want African extermination. The best result from your efforts will be FASTER extermination of Africans, starting with innocent Igbo who are minding their business.
I have often wondered why you chose to ethnicize your username while taking on the evil powers of this world.

Please use another name, unless of course you are from one of the ethnic groups in Nigeria that want to exterminate Igbo.

African cross will NOT be born by the Igbo nation alone.

If Africans are to be exterminated, it ain't Igbo business ALONE.

PLEASE I BEG OF YOU!
Politics / Re: Remarkable Similarities Between Goodluck Ebele Jonathan And Awolowo by Onlytruth(m): 11:53pm On Nov 11, 2013
ndu_chucks I am more interested in examining the dissimilarity between them.

For one, GEJ has carried out a professional and painstaking surgical military operations against Boko Haram without resorting to short cuts like using starvation to defeat the area supporting Boko Haram.

As a matter of fact, going by Jonathan's well known nature, he would NEVER order such.

Methinks that you are insulting our president (GEJ) by comparing him to a CHILD KILLER and MASS MURDERER like Awolowo.

Just my humble opinion.
