The insuretech firm, Paddy Cover, co-founded by Mayowa Owolabi and Tobi Obasa, and the food sourcing and distribution tech firm, Pricepally, owned by Luther Lawoyin, as well as TruQ, owned by Williams Fatayo, beat 24 other contestants who pitched their ideas before six judges. The two winners will go on an all-expense-paid trip to Dubai to pitch their idea to over 400 investors and thousands of technology ecosystem players at the GITEX 2022 exhibition for a chance to win $200,000. They all will converge at the Dubai World Trade Centre in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in October for the five-day business show, mentorship, and networking with world technology business leaders. The Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) is an annual consumer computer and electronics trade show exhibition and conference that takes place at the Dubai World Trade Centre. GITEX is one of the world’s most influential meeting places for the technology industry bringing together thought leaders, creators, innovators, and so on. The Africa roadshow is organized by GITEX Global and sponsored by Dubai North Star, which represents the UAE Government, and partnered locally by the Lagos State Government and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The judges at the event were: Akeem Hassan, TA to the special adviser to the Governor on Innovation and Technology, Segun Cole, Co-founder Fund the Gap Alliance, Amos Udok, Representative NITDA, Ireayo Oladunjoye, Head, Startups Lagos state employment Trust fund, Oguntade Adeseye, Unit head, innovation and Entrepreneurship ONDI, and Olorunnisomo Olaoluwa Co- Founder, Seedbuilders Innovation and Foundation. Addressing journalists at Eko Innovation Center, the Director-General (DG) of the Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi has pledged not to relent in giving support to young Nigerians with start-ups in various forms to catalyze the entire eco-system towards building a digital economy. Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi made this revelation on Thursday at the Eko Innovation Centre, Lagos through his Head of Corporate Planning & Strategy, Dr. Aristotle Onumo who represented him at the one-day pitching by no less than 27 start-ups. “As regards this particular program, the North Star is trying to take advantage of the program to expose our start-ups, while NITDA is partnering with GITEX. “What is happening now will happen in Dubai, but the Dubai World Trade Centre and the Dubai Government are represented here today. They have come to Nigeria to be able to harness the innovative skills already within Nigeria to start early marketing of the two to be selected and connecting them with various investors across the globe so that even before they get to GITEX proper, they would have had a kind of visibility.” Similarly, the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Innovation and Technology, Tumbosun Alake, said “the initiative is “to give opportunities to our ecosystem start-ups with better access to local and foreign markets. “At the same time, Dubai and GITEX are keen to be part of the start-up ecosystem in Lagos. “This initiative is for us to explore opportunities together, so the finalists will be participating in the North Star program in Dubai in October, and we hope they are able to get more international investors and access to the UAE market.” According to him, “the number one objective is to grow our ecosystem,” and “in terms of accelerating the state as a tech hub, it gives us more recognition globally because of our partners in the UAE. “If the UAE is here, it is a signal to other partners across the globe. It also helps our start-ups here to get access to their market internationally and with that, they can expand their revenue base. Explaining the Africa roadshow, the Director, Commercial Events Management, Dubai World Trade Centre, Zarko Ackovik, said the organizers “recognize that Nigeria obviously has the largest ecosystem in the whole of Africa.” However, “we don’t see too much of African and Nigerian start-ups coming up for expansion, so instead of just sitting there, we decided to come to the region to offer the opportunity for the start-ups. “The show brings them the opportunity to network, to go into competition, the $200,000 cash prize money, and the opportunity to take their start-ups there. “It is not only just to compete and meet investors but also the exposure comes with a lot of the big media as well, and they create partnerships and networks because the show brings 700 start-ups from over 60 countries, and investors coming from all over the world as well. Also speaking, Akande Ojo of the United States-based Pinnacle International Consulting – country representative of Dubai World Trade Centre, explained that they have decided on an African focus, and a Nigerian focus going forward. Left to right: Mr Akande Ojo, Country representative of the Dubai World trade centre; Mr. Mayowa Owolabi , CEO Paddycover limited and winner of the GITEX Global Lagos pitch event; Mr. Luther Lawoyin, CEO pricepally and 1st runner up of the GITEX Global Lagos pitch event; Mr Tunbosun Alake, Special adviser to the Lagos state Government on Innovation and Technology; Mr Tobi Obasa co-founder Paddycover Limited and Mr. Victor Afolabi, founder Eko Innovation center at the GITEX Global Lagos pitch event that held at Eko Innovation centre “A winner gets accommodation, space as a start-up to showcase yourself, they engage with investors, because technically you are part of their program,” he noted. “This is the first time we are dealing with them to ensure that they can bring the event close to sub-Saharan Africa – Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, amongothers,” he disclosed. “The idea is that many of our start-ups are talented but they don’t have that bridge to connect with, because they don’t have the resources. “So, they bring it close to you, we try to see the real talent, so the only thing it costs you is your car fare to come here, not flying to Dubai. “Eventually they will pick the top two each from Lagos and Abuja to be fully sponsored, and the rest of the Lagos Government initiative – the Eko Innovation Centre, and NITDA can also support. “The idea is just to allow more tech-preneuers to create more jobs and in return increase the foreign direct investment.” In the picture cover are (Left-Right): Mr. Victor Afolabi, founder of Eko Innovation center; Mr. Tunbosun Alake, Special adviser to the Lagos State Government on Innovation and Technology; Mr. Abdulla Alqahtani, Head of visa and attestation section UAE consulate in Lagos; Dr. Aristotle, Director of Corporate Research strategy, Dubai World Trade Centre; Ms. Fatine Laaroussi Tribek, Executive secretary of the UAE consulate in Lagos; Mr. Hamad Almansoori, Dubai World Trade Centre, Sales Manager- Govt liaison; Mr. Zarko Ackovik, Director-commercial Events Management, Dubai World Trade Centre and Mr. Akande Ojo, Country representative of the Dubai World trade center.

2023: Battle for Senate seat gears up in ogun East Multiple aspirants jostle for Ogun East Senatorial District seat in Ogun State, the contest for the senate seat currently occupied by Senator Lekan Mustapha, is getting more tough and hotter by the day. Report making round from reliable sources reveals Senator Lekan Mustapha, former Governor Gbenga Daniel, Otunba Oluseyi oduntan, Mr Segun Olumide Senbanjo, Engr Deji Ashiru and many of them are jostling to secure the tickets of their respective political parties ahead for the 2023 senatorial election in the zone. Meanwhile the number of contenders and pretenders continues to swell, intrigues and scheming continues in the leading political parties as the struggles for the senatorial tickets intensify. The incumbent Senator Mustapha of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has left many persons guessing his next line of political move. As at the time of filing this report, it is unclear if he will be seeking re-election to the Senate or will hearken to the calls on him to contest for the guber ticket of the state in 2023. Sources close to the Ijebu-born politician told vanguard that Mustapha is in a dilemma over his political future as due to certain conflicting interests. Moreso, it was revealed that the Senator may desire to seek re-election for a second term in the national assembly, there is pressure on him from within his faction of the APC in Ogun state to challenge Governor Dapo Abiodun for the party’s gubernatorial ticket ahead of the 2023 general election. Mustapha belongs to the group loyal to former Governor Ibikunle Amosun in the ruling APC. The faction has been at loggerheads with the mainstream of the APC perceived to be loyal to the governor. Ahead of the party’s primary elections, there is anxiety as the two factions continue to prop up their preferred candidates for the various tickets. Mustapha is one of those being named as possible replacement for Abiodun by the Amosun faction. Pundits says except for his not being in the good book of the governor and the leadership of the APC in the state, SLM, as Senator Mustapha is popularly called, looks good to make a return to the senate should he seek to re-contest. He was first elected to the Senate for the Ogun East constituency in 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and was appointed to committees on Niger Delta, Interior Affairs, Commerce and Capital Markets. He returned to the senate in 2019 on the platform of the APC. A grassroots politician of note, he is widely seen as having performed well with his current mandate. The unwritten zoning arrangement in the senatorial district also favours him in a way as the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, is from the Remo Zone of the district. Mustapha is from the Ijebu zone. While many independent campaign groups are working to promote Mustapha across the district, he is yet to formally declare his next political aspiration. According to sources within the party, there is confusion over his intentions. “We have some groups shouting KLM for Governor in some parts of the state on a dialy basis. And here in Ogun East, you hear some others saying Mustapha for Senate. So much uncertainty,” a source said. Otunba Gbenga Daniel Former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, is one of the frontrunners in the senatorial race in Ogun East. The Sagamu-Remo born politician governed the state between 2003 and 2011 on the platform of the PDP. In 2015, he attempted to go to the senate and represent Ogun East but abandoned the race midway. He left the PDP following his face off with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the late Buruji Kashamu. He joined the APC in 2019 to support the ambition of Governor Abiodun and has remained one of the latter’s strongest pillars of support till date. His statewide political network and structures are his main strength in the race and pundits say he looks good to clinch the ticket of the ruling party unless the governor decides otherwise for whatever reason. Otunba Oluseyi Oduntan Another senatorial aspirant on the platform of the APC in Ogun East is Otunba Oluseyi Oduntan. He said he is in the race because the state needs National Assembly members in 2023 that would partner and complement the efforts of Governor Dapo Abiodun in his development agenda. Oduntan is a former Managing Director of the Honeywell Group. As part of his quest for the seat, he recently inaugurated in his senatorial office the flagged off of an e-Naira Youth Empowerment, which is an initiative backed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the e-Naira digital currency, in Ijebu Ode where hundreds of youths across the Ogun East Senatorial District were trained as CBN agents on e-Naira. Contrary to insinuations in some quarters against his ambition, he is not a new comer to the race, though not well known in the politics of the state. He contested for the same seat in 2015, campaigning round the towns and villages of the district for support. His chances in the primary election of the ruling party remains dicey but his supporters say he is the aspirant to beat Mr. Olusegun Olumide-Senbanjo a chieftain of APC, is one of those who have declared their intentions to contest for the Ogun East Senatorial District seat in 2023. Speaking recently, the aspirant who is a front-line grassroot politician and oil mogul, said he had consulted critical stakeholders in the zone prior on his intention. The Ijebu-born businessman is an ally of Governor Abiodun. Some analysts have projected him to be the favourite due to his closeness to the governor. This may be the reason for his being touted as the governor’s preferred candidate for the Ogun East seat in some quarters in spite of insistence by Governor Abiodun that he has no anointed candidate for any positon across the state ahead of the 2023 general election. “I called this stakeholders meeting for us to have a deliberation regarding my desire to serve you all as a mediator between the State and Federal Government from this Senatorial District. We will be able to tender our needs before the authorities and get things working the way they should, which will ensure we complement the efforts and achievements of our Governor, Dapo Abiodun.” But pundits says Senbanjo, aside his friendship with the governor, possess some political strength as a grassroot politician in the area. “being fresh to the politics of the area. The ruling party needs a strong candidate in Ogun East which is what senbanjo has shown, as the area is known to be a stronghold of the opposition PDP, especially when the late Buruji Kashamu held sway. Senbanjo, had been doing a lot to win the support of party members, senbanjo which is fondly called SOS by his teeming admirers had gradually gained the political spread to win for the APC,” a source said. ONLINE INTEGRATIVE MARKETPLACE FOR PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS - WELLNESS MEDICAL DISTRIBUTION LAUNCHED PHARMA CENTER.. Wellness Medical Distribution launched its online integrative marketplace for pharmaceutical products, to enable ease of access to quality medicines and medical supplies in Nigeria, on the 20th of April, 2022. Over 253,000 deaths happen yearly in Nigeria, due to insufficient access to quality healthcare. While a good number of these casualties come from inadequate health systems, others stem from little or no access to medicines. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, however, major disruptions have visited pharmacy markets globally, through the power of technology and online commerce, in a bid to facilitate easier and safer access to drugs, for all. As such, getting medicines online affords consumers the benefit of quick, easy, convenient, and private access to medical needs, with the click of a mouse. As part of its dedicated efforts to improve access to quality healthcare in the country, Wellness Medical Distribution has launched its online integrative marketplace for pharmaceutical products. The launch event was held on the 20th of April, 2022, with top dignitaries in the pharmaceutical industry in Nigeria in attendance. Pharmacentre is an online platform that enables licensed medical professionals to sell quality medical products to businesses and consumers alike. As an integrative marketplace, Pharmacenter integrates consumer-facing (business to consumer selling) and provider-facing (business to business selling) models. Through its interactive and easy-to-use platform, Pharmacentre will leverage the huge stock of pharmaceutical products from different licensed pharma merchants to supply to online consumers/businesses via e-orders, as well as serve as a link between consumers and existing physical pharmacies. Pharmacentre stands to be the one-stop shop for quality and accessible medical supplies. Speaking during the launch of the platform, Mrs. Adetutu Afolabi, the Group MD/CEO of Wellness Medical Distribution, says: “Today’s world is filled with uncertainty, broken infrastructure, and numerous supply chain challenges. As affordability and accessibility to pharmaceutical supplies when needed, in Nigeria, has become a strong pain point, having a value-driven platform like Pharmacentre that enhances collaboration amongst pharmacists and other healthcare providers will improve the well-being of our people.” “Nobody should be left stranded because they do not have a pharmacist in their network.” Pharmacentre: Accessing medical products with ease and convenience Many persons, within the country, battling chronic health conditions or having challenges in accessing traditional pharmacy services search for relevant platforms for access to quality medical products. While a number of e-platforms in Nigeria exist to cater to this need, there are still very significant gaps in linkages between all points of the pharmaceutical supply chain. Also, a bulk of these existing platforms are largely consumer-facing and do not seamlessly solve the need for pharmacies looking to stock medical supplies as well. The Pharmacentre platform, however, enables users to either register as individuals or businesses. Registered users are further required to indicate if they would be interacting on the platform as a customer or as a vendor. However, only licensed vendors are authenticated to sell on the marketplace. Through the platform, users, whether as individuals or businesses, will be able, not only to get quality medicines from licensed vendors but also be able to get these delivered conveniently to their doorsteps, with the least hassle. Using the ‘Talk to a Pharmacist’ feature as well, users on the platform can easily get first-hand recommendations and prescriptions from licensed pharmacists before purchasing drugs online. Vendors on the platform get to benefit from the ease of listing their medical products on the platform, thereby, broadening the visibility of their business and brand. They also get to track how their products are faring via real-time marketing reports/dashboards showing sales on the platform. Vendors likewise are able to run promotions on the platform to market their products to a wider viewership as well as flexibly offer discounts on their products. The platform offers a great opportunity for all stakeholders within the pharmaceutical space to operate effectively and collaboratively towards the goal of enhancing access to medical supplies and products. At the heart of this objective, is the overarching interest in improving health and wellness, a primary motivation for the parent company, Wellness Healthcare Group. Early this year, Wellness HMO, launched its mobile app, Wellness Plus, to revolutionize healthcare service delivery in Nigeria. The mobile app affords users the power to choose health and wellness for themselves, through options to request healthcare services, and monitor their health, from the comfort of their homes. Wellness Healthcare Group is committed to providing good and affordable healthcare to all, through its robust innovative healthcare solutions.
