PoliticsRe: Group Decries Buhari's Worrisome Display Of Misogynistic Tendencies by OnReflection: 6:08am On Oct 13, 2015
In the statement, the SCN called to mind that the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan gave women about 35% representation in his appointments, wondering why President Buhari has chosen not to tow the same path, as his 21-man ministerial nominees only had about 3 women.
I stand with the SCN on this vexing issue.

The fair representation of women is one of the measures which signposts how progressive a nation truly is.

The visionary lies to himself, the liar only to others ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Mrs Alison-Madueke’s critics say this career narratives are now in doubt.

“You can’t build something on nothing,” said an official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, who is peeved that President Goodluck Jonathan proceeded to reappoint the minister despite the weighty allegations of corruption hanging on her neck. “Since she lied about her graduation date, she must have lied about her work history as well.” Going by this new revelation that she only made it out of the university in 1992, Mrs Alison-Madueke has barely one-year post-graduation work experience before she was hired as a unit head in Shell.

Workers installing imported marble on a staircase at Mr. Alamieyeseigha's official mansion.

...Here in Mr. Alamieyeseigha's state of Bayelsa, that means serious money. Under a Nigerian law enacted to help develop the oil-rich but long-neglected Niger Delta, 13 percent of the revenue generated in any state is returned there for development. Bayelsa produces 30 percent of the country's oil, and with recent sky-high oil prices, the state budget this year ballooned to $560 million, compared with nearly $300 million in 2003.

But the money has not brought widespread development. It has mostly paid for white elephants like mansions for the governor and his deputy. The 2005 budget sets aside $8.5 million to construct those two houses, along with more than $2 million for furnishings.

And that is just this year. Since 2002 the state has spent more than $25 million on the governor's mansion, according to budgets on file in Yenagoa's tiny public library. The fence enclosing the two houses alone cost $5.7 million.

A glossy, mostly wordless booklet issued by Mr. Alamieyeseigha's press office, "A Legacy of Selfless Service," includes artist's renderings of the houses, depicting fantasias of waterfalls, fountains and artificial lakes. At the construction site where the governor's house is nearing completion, workers raced to lay thousands of square feet of imported granite tiles and mahogany ceiling panels.

Meanwhile, the Poverty Eradication Committee, whose purpose is not explained, has a budget of about $23,000, according to the 2005 spending plan, which is posted on the state's Web site, www.bayelsagov.com. That is a little more than half of what is budgeted for toiletries for state officials.

It’s Senseless, Needless For PDP To Oppose PMB- Gov Umahi

Oct 12, 2015 6:16 am

https://www.leadership.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/CHief-Dave-Umahi.jpg

The Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Dave Umahi, at the weekend said that his administration and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state will not engage in “senseless and needless opposition” to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government.

He disclosed this in his country home, Uburu, Ohaozara local government area when a team of the PDP in the state paid him a condolence visit.

Umahi said that since Ebonyi State has a lot of challenges, it would make no sense for it to embark on “senseless opposition against President Buhari.”

The state governor, however, said that supporting Buhari’s programmes did not in any way mean that he and other members of the PDP in the state would abandon their party. Reiterating his support for President Buhari’s anti-corruption programme, Umahi said he believed in the President’s honesty and commitment to bringing graft to the barest minimum level in the country.

The governor said, “A number of people who like to jump from one place to the other have been asking me and I said look, we are in PDP and we remain in PDP, but we are supporting the programmes of Mr President”.

“We like what he is doing in the fight against corruption. You can see honesty in his administration and his commitment to rebuilding Nigeria. I share certain virtues with him”.

“We, as a state, will continue to support him. To oppose him is to oppose the truth. But as we support him, we have to support our party, the PDP, so that together we can stand”.

Mental screening canvassed for ministerial nominees

October 12, 2015

A director with the World Health Organisation, WHO, Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Neuroscience, Prof. Oye Guruje, has said besides assets declaration of would-be ministers under President Muhammadu Buhari, the Senate should also ensure they are certified medically fit for the job.

It would be recalled that the Senate had last week told the ministerial nominees whose names were sent to the National Assembly for confirmation that “you must declare your assets, and must have a certificate of proof that you have declared your assets, and that you are given a certificate of proof by the Code of Conduct Bureau.”

But Guruje during this year’s World Mental Health Day in Ibadan at the weekend admonished the Senate to also insist that the incoming ministers should be men of integrity like Buhari so as to jointly salvage the national economy from the brink of collapse occasioned by years of mindless looting of the nation’s treasury by public officers.

Guruje, who is also initiator and project director of the mental health leadership and advocacy programme (mhLAP), a project of mental health leadership capacity building and advocacy being conducted in five West African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra-Leone, Liberia and The Gambia, said corruption was a thing of the mind and not necessarily connected with the state of mental health of public officers.

Speaking on this year’s theme titled “Dignity in Mental Health”, he noted that the stakeholders were raising awareness on what could be done to ensure people with mental health conditions live with dignity through the development and implementation of policies and law that protect their human rights, adequate training of health professionals to provide effective mental health service, respect for the views of persons with mental health conditions by their health providers, their inclusion in decision-making processes, and informed public attitude to mental illness.

Guruje, who was flanked by Dr. Adeoye Oyewole, a consultant psychiatrist and Dr. Vivian Ikem, whose new book “Shadows in the Mirror -the many faces of depression’’ billed for launch later this month in Lagos was introduced to the public, quoted from a 2010 report which stated that about one in seven adult Nigerians will have one form of mental disorder or the other in their lifetime.

Ex-Convict Alamieyeseigha To Forfeit $600,000 US Mansion, $400,000 Cash, As US Justice Department Implements “Kleptocracy Initiative”

Former governor of Bayelsa and convicted money launderer, DSP Alamieyeseigha will be losing his mansion in the Potomac area of Maryland, as he could not pay his annual real estate tax to the state.

Mr. Alamieyeseigha, popular known as “Alams,” bought the property from his looting of Bayelsa State resources. That led to his arrest in the United Kingdom in 2006, from which he jumped bail dressed as a grandmother.

Officials of the state of Maryland Assessment and Taxation department told SaharaReporters that Alams owed the state some $10,000 in real estate taxes.

They said the property, which is located 504 Pleasant Drive, Rockville, MD 20850-5879 belongs to Solomon & Peters Ltd, an offshore front company used by the ex-convict to purchase the property in 2003 while he was the governor of Bayelsa state. Solomon $ Peters Limited in registered in the British Virgin Islands.

Alams’ legal troubles led to the elevation of Goodluck Jonathan to the governorship of that state, and soon after, to national prominence when he was singlehandedly selected by President Olusegun Obasanjo as presidential running mate to Umaru Yar’Adua. He was later arrested in the UK for money laundering but fled to Nigeria, where he was arrested and prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after members of the Bayelsa State assembly impeached him.

In 2005, Mr. Alamieyeseigha’s daughter, Oyindounbra, also bought a house in Whittier, California, where she attended a Community College. In that same year, she sold the house for $1.7 before relocating to Nigeria.

Maryland officials told SaharaReporters that Mr. Alamiseyeseigha has not paid his property taxes for almost a year.

Interestingly, the same property in Maryland is being recovered by the Obama administration through the US Department of Justice’s “Kleptocracy Initiative”. In March this year, the office of the US Attorney General filed to forfeit the assets of Mr. Alamieyeseigha in the US. The Potomac home, which is valued at $600,000, and another $400,000 belonging to the disgraced Governor was also found in a brokerage account at the Fidelity Brokerage Services LLC account in Massachusetts.

If and when the civil proceedings are concluded, the US government plans to repatriate the stolen monies to Nigeria.

“Funds of this nature that are repatriated to Nigeria ought to be put directly into specific public projects that are negotiated between the United Nations and the Nigeria government,” a newspaper columnist told SaharaReporters today. “Otherwise, how does one know that the funds do not return to Alams through Nigeria’s own Kleptocracy Highway?”

Tinubu – I Won’t Recognise Saraki As Senate President, Unless…

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has responded to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as President of the Senate.

Tinubu, while speaking on the development at the national secretariat of the party on Tuesday in Abuja, said, “I will never recognise such a kangaroo arrangement that produced Bukola as the Senate President. “Or how do you want me to recognise a man who deliberately defied his own party because of his personal interest? It is not done anywhere.

“Therefore, recognising Bukola as the Senate President after all he had done to our party today, having gone against the wish and pattern of our great party, honestly will amount to endorsing impunity, and which you should all know I will not ”
,Tinubu said.

He added, “For me to recognise Senator Bukola as the Senate President, he must show remorse for today’s action. He had earlier promised to defy the party and the deed has been done. You don’t do that in politics.

“Personal interest must not override that of the party that beget you. It’s a spoken and silent rule of the game, which all and sundry must abide with. “I’m not God, but as far as this party is concerned, I’m a leader and I know what is good for the party at the appropriate time.

Speaking now is not for the party, but for myself. I cannot recognize Bukola as the Senate President.”

There were other services that were new; like a handover countdown clock, mobile Apps for Google, for IOS and ipad, for Microsoft, and for Research in Motion (Blackberry), which the existing website did not have, as well as the annual maintenance cost for managing the website.

It was for all these services that the contract was issued for N78 million, which the Lagos State procurement agency gave a No Objection based on the advice of the Ministry of Science and Technology, who are the Government adviser on ICT matters. In publishing this Contract award which was the Government tradition under my watch, the procurement agency’s website summarised it as “upgrade” only without detailing the other services and this has been distorted by the agents of hate as their suspected “smoking gun”.

For those who are familiar with mobile Applications, they will know that users either pay for them online or download them for free. What is usual is that applications for service are usually provided to users free, but somebody bears the cost. Since these applications were to be made available to the public for free access and to assist Government communication, we decided to pay for them. The entire documents are with the Lagos State Government and are available for those who seek the truth.

Stop Public Defecation To Preserve Underground Water
Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN)
4 June 2013 12:00 pm

Most of the waters we need to survive as a people today is not the water from Lagoon or the water at the bar beach, it is water under the ground.

Most of us who defecate and urinate on the ground contaminate the underground water. So in few years, your children may be drinking your urine.

That is the reality. In a few years, your children may be drinking water containing some of your own waste. So we must stop polluting the groundwater. Stop dumping refuse in water body, as it will come back to hurt us.

We are not saying don't drill bore hole, we are saying get information before doing it. We are saying one borehole may be enough for a whole street, don't drill 20. We can share to preserve water.

Water means many things to many people. For some it is a business. What we call "pure water", how pure is it? I don't know but it provides money to sustain life.

For some people it is also a resource, manufacturers rely on a lot of water to get so many things out with which we get on with life. For us on this side, it is a critical component necessary for us to discharge public responsibility to save lives and public property.

Water is an important part of our public strategy. Its management is important in our security and defense system.

Both cases of inflated contracts are condemnable, however may I remind you that Fashola did his without breaking the law; Fashola got an approval from the state assembly so what he did might have been morally wrong but it wasnt illegal.

On the other hand, Oduah did not get the budget approval from the NASS for those cars but she still went ahead and bought them at a price which was eventually even above the price she presented to the NASS in the first instance which was even rejected. In summary, Oduah made illegal extra-budgetary expenses.

Hopefully, you now see the difference between both cases?... If Nigeria was a sane country, she should be in prison today.

When are TANoids going to learn to marshal the right arguments?

A borehole contractor, Mr. Elijah Idowu, who runs Noble Fourstar Hydro Resources, explained to Saturday PUNCH the process it takes to reach a depth where drinkable water can be extracted in the Ikoyi-Victoria Island-Lekki zone.

He said, “Digging borehole is never a child’s play in that zone because you will be talking of about 500 or 700 metres before one can reach a drinkable water depth.
Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/lagosians-in-highbrow-areas-may-be-drinking-own-faeces-investigation/

“We know that only few landlords can finance standard boreholes. The common 100 feet deep boreholes being financed by property owners in Lagos metropolis is nothing but shallow wells. The depth of the boreholes being drilled at LSWC is a minimum of 250 metres. This is to ensure that un-diluted water is tapped from the earth for public consumption”, Holloway noted.

The simple reason why Nnamdi Kanu hates Igbos more than those he accuses

https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/575285305390931970/OLPxydxN.jpeg

From Ejike Chinedu, Lagos

Without any fear of contradiction, one can say that Nnamdi Kanu’s Radio Biafra has become a thorn-in-the-flesh for the Nigerian government in the past few weeks. Not only has government expressed deep worries over the activities of the “illegal” media house, it has failed to stop its signals reaching the fanatical audience particularly in the South Eastern part of Nigeria.

Even if the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission eventually succeeds in completely jamming the signal and thereby extinguishing for the time being as it may appear, the popularity of the operators that is spreading like wild fire among the people of the South East, Nnamdi Kanu and his cohorts have every reason to be proud.

After the first claim by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Yemi Folasade-Esan, that turned out to be false, it became clear that the equipment used by the National Broadcasting Commission cannot interfere with what the little and unknown Radio Biafra has at its disposal. This seems similar to what we were told about the Igbos ingenuity during the civil war.

With every claim of jamming the signals of the ‘illegal’ station by the NBC came revelations rubbishing what the government agency was saying.

Therefore, Nnamdi Kanu should be proud that within such a short time, not more than five years, he has attracted to himself and his ideology such followership from among the Igbo speaking people, those that chose to refer to themselves as non-Nigerians but the Indigenous People of Biafra.

He should be proud that out of the estimated 170million Nigerians, not less than 50% of the elite now know about him and has spoken about him at least once.

Nnamdi Kanu should be proud that his picture had trended on the world state along with his Radio Biafra for days. He knows this hence he claimed on his twitter handle that “Radio Biafra is now more popular than the BBC.”

But if he would spare a moment and think deeply, the young man would realize that he is gradually constituting himself to a nuisance and a threat to his own people that he claims to champion their redemption. His dis-connect with civility and decorum is beginning to rob off negatively on the psyche of the millions of people who now see him as the “director of their destiny.”

Now, the real issue is that if not checked, Nnamdi Kanu will be responsible for the death of more Igbos than were killed during the civil war of 1967 to 1970. One of his messages which he repeatedly pushed out through his Radio Biafra and other medium of communication directed his followers to “begin massive destruction of everything around you, if they do not hear my voice on the radio for up to four days.”

He had succeeded in creating the deepest hatred in the heart of his followers, not for non-Igbos alone but for even those who became Igbo and championed the Igbo course before he knew his left from his right. Every Igbo man who does not agree with Nnamdi Kanu’s philosophy is freely insulted and referred to as an EFULEFU, meaning vagabond.

“Dr Ikedife the leader of saboteurs, enemy of Biafra & a member of APC, has dissociated itself from Radio Biafra”

“Mallam Rochas Okorocha’s Son Graduates from University of Manchester with First class.”

“Like father like son Ohanaeze harlot Ndigbo at it again, will do anything for money”

These are a few of recent tweets from Radio Biafra where derogatory words are splashed on men who Nnamdi Kanu and his lot should respect even if they disagree with his view.

My advice to Nnamdi Kanu is to reassess his approach to achieving his aim. Whether or not Biafra is realizable in the circumstance prevailing today is an issue for another day but while exploring the possibilities, if that is what he is really pushing for, he should avoid actions that would further endanger the Igbo people. Some of his actions suggest he is out to satisfy his personal ego not minding who is put in danger.

"Biafra must come or every living thing in the zoo will die...” Is one of the frequently made comments on the Radio and twitter by Nnamdi Kanu and then, he is still having and travelling with a “zoo” passport. You see what I mean?

Finally, It is not possible to bring back every Igbo son and daughter into the geographical definition of Igbo land. If that happens, the Igboness in the people will find no expression and therefore will choke itself. This implies that whether Biafra gains independence or not, Igbos will always thrive or seek to thrive among other peoples of Nigeria and by extension, the world. Igbos must continue to accommodate others and be accommodated by them.

Nnamdi should do himself and his people a whole lot of good if he seeks other civil means of sustaining his agitation for fairness and equity in Nigeria and if it comes to parting ways with the other parts of the country, it should be centered on clear issues void of hatred because hate is like a mad dog that bites its owner first.

UK Asks Switzerland To Arrest Kola Aluko For Alison-Madueke Proceedings

BY SAHARA REPORTERS, NEW YORKOCT 07, 2015

Sahare Reporters has confirmed from the Attorney General’s Office in Switzerland that the United Kingdom has requested Mutual Legal Assistance from Swiss authorities for the detention of Kola Aluko.

Mr. Aluko is the alleged money launderer for the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

SaharaReporters broke the news earlier today that Kola Aluko has holed himself up in his regal estate in southern Switzerland after learning of Alison-Madueke’s arrest in the United Kingdom. Alison-Madueke and four others are confirmed to have been arrested by agents attached to the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK for bribery and other financial crimes.

In an email to SaharaReporters, Nathalie Guth of the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland said, “I can give you the additional information, that the OAG has received a request for mutual assistance from England.” Mrs. Guth bolded ‘from England’ to emphasize that it was the UK, not Nigeria, requesting Mr. Aluko’s detention.

This communication from the Swiss Attorney General’s Office contradicts reports earlier from Reuters news that it was Nigeria which had requested the assistance from Switzerland.

SaharaReporters spoke with Femi Adesina, the Senior Special Adviser for Media and Publicity to President Buhari, who told SaharaReporters that he did not want to comment on whether Nigeria requested mutual assistance from the Swiss because he did not have all the information.

SaharaReporters also called Mr. Aluko’s home phone number, +41919402714, but it has been disconnected since our last communication with his employee yesterday.

A call to the Home Office department in charge of Mutual Legal Assistance did not yield any result, as the officer who answered our call said he could not provide information about MLAs but the office confirmed they knew of Mr. Aluko.

The request to the office of the Swiss Attorney General was necessitated by rumors earlier today that Mr. Aluko had been arrested by Swiss authorities.
