The fight for supremacy between next
generation consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox
One has just got more interesting, as one
previously untapped market of one billion
citizens has just opened its gates.
After 13 years, China will officially lift a ban
on consoles and allow them to be freely
marketed across its territory. The China
console ban will however be lifted on one
condition: that the video game consoles are
manufactured in Shanghai’s new free trade
zone.
The ban was imposed in 2000 and affected the
manufacturing, sale and import of consoles in
China, amid worries that the content would
harm the youth’s physical and mental
development.
Ever since then, major video game
manufacturers such as Microsoft, Sony and
Nintendo have not been able to legally sell
their products on the Chinese market, even if
they were manufactured there. Consoles have
however been available on the black market,
while local manufacturers have tried to come
up with alternatives.
Chinese PC manufacturer Lenovo, for instance,
branched out to develop motion detection
consoles similar to Microsoft’s Kinect and
recently announced plans to launch a games
service that would include gameplay tips,
social networking and software reviews.
That does not mean that there is no room for
the gaming industry’s “Big Three” on the vast
Chinese market. Analysts expect a boost in
sales once the consoles are freely available.
Before reaching the mainland, the three
gaming giants’ products will have to be
approved by the Chinese Ministry of Culture,
to insure that the content is appropriate.
Even so, the opening of the Chinese market is
very likely to have a major impact on the
outcome of the battle for gaming superiority,
as it has the potential to allow Microsoft,
Sony and even Nintendo to reach hundreds of
millions of users who would be eager to buy
previously banned consoles and games.
China’s ban on consoles will be lifted soon and
is part of a wider policy strategy for the new
Shanghai free trade zone. The new trade zone
is strongly backed by the country’s prime
minister, with the goal of increasing the
Chinese economy’ openness to the world.

Cool......

...I told my friend about this and he said he thought it was a "myth"..... All Nairalanders, please, warn your friends, relatives and loved ones about the dangers of answering calls while your phone is plugged(charging).....
Mods Biko, front page.....

By Chris Bucktin....
A young bride-to-be died from an electric
shock while chatting on an iPhone made by
Apple, her family claim.
Former air stewardess Ma Ailun collapsed
after answering her mobile as it charged.
The 23-year-old – due to wed next month –
was dead on arrival at hospital in northwest
China.
Her family in Xinjiang have handed her iPhone
5 and accessories to police.
Her sister said she had bought the phone and
charger from an official Apple store.
She said: “I want to warn everyone not to
make calls when a phone is charging.”
Announcing a probe, an Apple spokesman said:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of this
tragic incident and offer our condolences. We
will fully investigate and co-operate with
authorities.”
Mobile phones have a low electrical output of
three to five volts, substantially less than the
36 volts required for a shock.
But if the charger or circuit has a problem,
such as a broken wire, it can lead to a 220-volt
shock.
Hong Kong University professor Johnny Sin
Kin-on said: “There is a risk using an electrical
device while it is being charged, be it a shaver
or a phone.”
The iPhone 5 costs from £529, and is built for
the American computer giant in China.
But a huge industry of fakes has built up. In
Kunming city alone, 22 fake Apple stores have
been raided.
The shops can be so realistic that staff
actually believe they are working for Apple.

Apple to probe smartphone charging death mystery...
U.S. electronics giant Apple is investigating reports in China that a woman died after being electrocuted while trying to make a call with her iPhone 5 while it was charging.
Ma Ailun, a flight attendant with China Southern Airlines, was picking up her handset to answer a call last Thursday when she received an electric shock, police said Sunday, in reports carried by the state-run Xinhua news agency.
Police, who are continuing their investigation, have not yet identified a cause -- whether the phone or anything else.
In a statement received by CNN, Apple said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter." Many have taken to social media to question how the 23-year old from China's far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region died.
"(I) hope that Apple Inc. can give us an explanation. I also hope that all of you will refrain from using your mobile devices while
charging," a person identified as Ma's sister posted on Weibo, China's Twitter-like service.
Meanwhile, Ma's father, Ma Guanghui, said that his daughter was electrocuted, adding that her body showed signs of electrocution, Xinhua said. But Monday's Xinhua report also pointed out that mobile phones have a low output of only 3 to 5 volts, which isn't enough to harm the human body.

Halle Berry married French actor Olivier Martinez in a private ceremony in France on Saturday, her representative confirmed
Sunday. It's the third marriage for the Oscar-winning actress, who announced in April that she is expecting a baby with Martinez. Berry, 46, and Martinez, 47, have been close companions since meeting on the set of "Dark Tide" last year. He was by her side through the last months of her bitter custody battle with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, the Canadian model who fathered her 5-year-old daughter Nahla. They reached "an amicable agreement" over custody last November, a week after a fistfight in Berry's Hollywood driveway between Martinez and Aubry.
Berry was previously married to former pro baseball player David Justice -- from 1993 until 1996 -- and singer Eric Benet -- from 2001 to 2004.
"I feel fantastic," Berry told CNN when discussing her pregnancy in April. "This has been the biggest surprise of my life, to tell you the truth. I thought I was kind of past the point where this could be a reality for me. So it's been a big surprise and the most wonderful."
