I agree with your point about sharing the same geographical space, very solid point that makes sense, especially relative to my example of other southern tribes mixing up. You're very correct, they don't share same lands, so it is say easier for them to choose to be separate entities. So let me focus my observations on the North itself. Like I said before I believe you are right and everything you explained is true and correct. But I still feel there is more to this bond, I think it goes deeper than that and so far no northerners I know have been able to come up with an explanation beyond this same area you have covered. Sometimes, I feel they know more but are hiding the info, like maybe it is meant to be a secret for only hausa-fulani to know about, just an opinion though, I'm not saying that's a fact, but sometimes it feels that way. I will answer like this, many years ago, I used to think Hausas and Fulanis were the only tribe in the North, until whether by chance or whatever, for the first and only time in my life, I dated an Hausa girl from Kaduna. Well, at first I thought she was Hausa, like because she didn't look Fulani. Because she was the fleshy type, so first time i saw her and heard her accent i thought she was hausa, cuz fulanis are usually the slender, slim types. Sorry I don't mean this as an offense or abuse. Anyway, after some months of dating, (very sweet girl, well behaved, coolheaded, respectful, submissive and stuff like that, and very very neat), she told me she wasn't actually Hausa by tribe even though she speaks Hausa. I was shocked to my bone cuz I automatically thought she was Hausa prior to her revelation. She told me she was from Kafanchan area in Kaduna but they were not Hausas, can't remember the actual tribe she said she was. And then she was like there are plenty different tribes in the North, just like we have in the south but the only difference is majority of them speak Hausa, like it is the common language, so most people think all of them are Hausas. So now back to my original question, in this case where you have many other northern tribes whom also intermarry with Hausa ands Fulani, who also share similar culture and share the same geographic location, how come it is only hausa-fulani that formed the single unit identity, why don't Northerners say Hausa-Nupe or Kanuri-fulani etc, how come it is only hausa-fulani that merge together in this way? This is the major reason I have this feeling that the bond goes beyond your explanation. I don't know, maybe it is an exaggeration on my part, but just sometimes it crosses my mind as to why that unique unity is singled out.

Yes, please, i need more clarification. but first, let me say that i appreciate your contribution. Out of curiosity, i have asked this same questions some years back to the hausa people i knew in lagos and this your explanation is same thing they said. And the main thing or main part of the explanation is that INTERMARRIAGE thing, that you hardly see a fulani family that don't have hausa relatives and vice versa in the North. But for me, my curiosity lies in why such a bond has gotten so strong to the point that 2 distinct tribes and people now almost see themselves as a homogeneous unit. Why do i feel there might be more to it than is being covered by your first explanation is because, there are other tribes too where you have a lot of intermarriage too, for example in the deep south, igbos mix with other southern tribes a lot, and it is common place to see south south tribes with igbo relatives, in the southwest, yorubas marry igbo women a lot and for the sake of cultural similarity, let me better use something like Yorubas and Edo people, or Yorubas and Urhobo people, share lots of cultural similarities and they intermarry a lot, many edo or benin families have yoruba relatives and vice versa, same thing with Urhobo but still they see themselves are heterogeneous groups, as different tribes and they don't merge their tribal identity into a single unit like you have with the hausa-fulani. So i just wonder if the bond goes beyond culture or religion, or marriage, is there some history to it or is there like a treaty of unification?

Great post. But i have a question, please don't be offended for my asking, it is just for me to learn about the northern identity culture, i don't mean to ask for any negative reason. Why is it that people, mostly northerners lump hausa and fulani together, especially with the famous phrase you just used hausa-fulani. almost as if hausa-fulani is a single tribe. Is hausa and fulani not 2 different tribes, and are they not culturally different? why do they always get joined together like as if they are a single unit. I think that confusion too is prevalent in the south that see them as one, based largely on the info or perception fed to them by northerners. Is there something more to it, that they are thus joined and united, is there something about the why we don't know?
