Okay. I'm afraid you're correct. But you know appointments such as this fall under the exclusive prerogative of the President. The one that really annoyed me the most is the appointment of Col. Hameed Ali(rtd) to head the customs. This is a retired Army officer brought to head a totally different institution he knows nothing about. Well, Buhari should continue with this impunity, we'll see how far he goes. The man is very sectional, undoubtedly. Too bad for a Nigerian President.

He was not sacked please. He retired. Thought I think this particular appointment is on order since the said Ja'faru was an asst. CG of prisons prior to his appointment, Buhari to me us still too sectional for a pluralistic country like Nigeria.

But as an average guy, I think we need to first be honest with ourselves that we need reforms. Then we can sit down and discuss.

In my opinion we need three approaches: short term, medium term & long term.

Short term should include measures to improve security, infrastructure/electricity, create employment, better education, healthcare & food security, etc. And a concrete economic plan/blueprint.

Medium term (like from next 4 or 5 years)) should be constitutional reforms & reform structure of the Nigerian state. Decentralise and devolve powers to regions or states, reduce legislature to unicameral one, like a senate of 150 law makers. Scrap state legislatures and governors and introduce a regional parliament. Maybe 50 per region. Then regional Police should come in. Federal Police can handle inter-regional crimes, that is crimes committed across regions. Northern regions will have more freedom to practice Sharia Penal code. Generally strengthen the judiciary.

Resource control can be done 50/50 Region/FG. FG will ensure support for regions with less income. Only very few roads will be federal roads. Most will be regional & LG roads. Private sector will play more role in infrastructure provision while regional/Federal govts provide guidelines and an enabling environment.

Then empower municipalities: LGA chairmen/mayors & councillors. That is bring governance to grassroots.

Immunity only for the Head of State/President. Maybe a single presidential term of 6 years. No need to loot for re-election.

Fraud & corruption detection to be top notch. Regular & unscheduled auditing of books in ministries, LGAs & at all levels. Leaking info about planned audit will be a serious crime. We can study how Singaporeans, New Zealanders and others succeeded in it. Stiff penalties for economic crimes.

If possible, appoint a commonwealth foreigner to lead EFCC or equivalent. To be truly independent.

Long term will be how to consolidate, plugs holes & fix errors remaining in the system, achieve a developed country status in 10 to 20 years.

Of course there can be many ways to go about it BUT all will need sincere, sustained & dogged reforms.

Your submission is very brilliant sir. I agree with you to a large extent. Let's keep the fire burning, convince more people we come across and give political support to political figures who've shown support for this reforms. I'm sure we'll get there. Lemme follow you.

Those senators mentioned surely have good intentions.
But at the end, they will achieve little.

If you look at political history generally, mankind's refusal to do the right things at the right time has always been disastrous.
From Kings arrogating too much power to much powers to themselves, imposing outrageous taxes, dictators failing to embark on reforms, refusal to relinquish power to politicians looting with impunity.

It seems man's penchant for self-destruct is outstandingly enormous.

Look at parts of the world engulfed by wars and strife right now. Painful but peaceful reforms were feasible in the years and decades prior. But they never happened. They simply sleep-walked into serious crisis.

GEJ's respect for voters' choice temporarily staved off a massive crisis in 2015.
But it is clearly not Uhuru yet.

The current economic situation could push the country towards tipping point. People need succour and fast.

Of course one is tagged a wailer when you articulate what can be felt by everyone already.

We're in a very pitiable state right now and something needs to be done fast to save this situation but sadly, as you have rightly pointed out, many people seem to have lost touch with reality. Bro please tell me what you think we can do now in your honest opinion.

I understand your position. It's really frustrating i must confess. But we should never relent, let's join forces with people of like minds, pressuring our legislators at the national level and our Governors in our respective states. Full scale violence will surely happen if other means fail. But for now, let's keep our spirits high. The happenings in the Niger-Delta, thank God they've been avoiding needless blood-shed so far, must also get our moral and otherwise support.


Note: In the present Senate, we have people like Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Olusola Adeyeye, Godswill Akpabio, Eyinnaya Abaribe etc. These guys are federalist minded and we should rally round them in our small capacities especially Ekweremadu who also happens to be well placed. Violence should be the last resort.

I saw them today on Channels tv. They're for routine patrol of the Rivers and creeks around.

There is far more ethno-religious division now. Time was when Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for a Muslim-Muslim President/VP.

Now some clamour for more autonomy/resource control, some determined to use numerical dominance to perpetuate political dominance. Yet a section is in the middle, not openly saying where they stand, but also eager to have be a major player in the power politics.

Hardly any is bothered by how to genuinely foster national unity, harmony, equity & justice.

It's still achievable. Even if the majority of Nigerians and the political class are unwilling, we can be forced to do the right thing. You see what is happening in the Niger-Delta? It's a wake up call. If Nigeria must survive, then everyone must contribute to the national cake. This is one reason why I'm happy about the reduced value of crude oil. Free and quick money from oil is the chief cause of all these, excessive financial corruption inclusive. It won't be this bad if govt. survived mainly on taxes. Just imagine that the price of crude oil in the international market falls so bad that it becomes nearly useless... Won't it force us to do the right thing? We just have to sincerely fix this country in the best way possible else, disintegration will become inevitable.

I think i partially agree with you. The elite class is raping us all collectively. But one way i think excessive corruption(both legit like this one and otherwise) can be curbed is by restructuring the country- financially and resource wise. Let's practice a bottom-top(from LG or state to FG) cash flow instead of the present corruption-laden top-bottom system. A bottom-top system will ensure accountability because the people from the grass-roots will always bi interested in how their sweat is spent. As it stands, corruption in Nigeria is institutionalised and even stylishly backed by the constitution. If truly we will change this country for the better, it must be through the very foundations.

You're talking about Delta state(western Niger-Delta). The eastern Niger-delta(Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and Cross-River states) was in the Eastern region which became part of Biafra until the civil war ended with Biafra's surrender.
Note: The Ijaws and Ogonis of Bayesla and River states sided with the 'One Nigeria' stance of the federal govt at some points during the war.
