PoliticsKaduna Govt. To Go After 2,000 Unregistered Private Schools – Official by opportunes(op): 3:17pm On Jan 13, 2020
The Kaduna State Quality Assurance Authority says it will go after over 2,000 unregistered private primary and secondary schools operating illegally in the state. The Director General of the authority, Hajiya Umma Ahmad, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Monday. Ahmad explained that only about 2,000 out of the over 4,000 private schools operating in the state have registered with the state government. According to her, some of the schools have been operating in the state for over 20 years without registration to avoid regulation and evade tax payment to the government.

“As at middle 2019, only about 1,000 out of the over 4,000 private schools in the state have registered with the state government, until we started closing the illegal schools down. “So far, about 2,000 have registered and we are going after the remaining 2,000 until all have registered.

“This will enable us to effectively monitor and regulate them to ensure they operate within the stipulated standard in line with our mandate. “That child, regardless of which school he attends is a child under the care of Kaduna state with obligation to provide such a child with quality education he or she deserves.

“Therefore, the state government will continue to ensure that both public and private schools provide quality education for children, so they will grow and become intelligent, skillful, innovative and creative citizens,” she said. She assured the public that the agency would continue to go after unregistered and substandard private schools in the state, threatening that all substandard and illegal public schools would be closed.

The director general also said that the agency would soon publish the list of registered private schools in the state online to enable parents identify illegal schools and avoid them. “We will also come up with a form of ranking of private and public schools from the best to the worst in the state, to guide parents in choosing the best school for their kids. “This will spur competition among schools and encourage them to improve their facilities,” she added.(NAN)

Crime3 Expatriates Abducted By Pirates Rescued by opportunes(op): 7:23am On Jan 08, 2020
Three expatriates kidnapped by suspected sea pirates around Sigbene/Agge community along Delta and Bayelsa states border creeks last week Thursday, regained their freedom. Daily Trust learnt that a good number of the sea pirates involved in the abduction of the expatriates and killing of four naval ratings were killed during a joint rescue operation on Sunday.

Discreet government sources from Delta and Bayelsa confirmed the development late Monday evening, revealing that two Russians and an Indian who were taken captive were rescued unhurt. The vessel, MV AMBIKA, believed to be working for the international oil firm, where the expatriates were abducted, was also recovered, our correspondent further gathered Military sources who also confirmed the rescue of the expatriates said: “They were rescued yesterday (Sunday). Many of the sea pirates were killed during the process. The vessel has been seen as well”.

Investigations revealed that governments of Delta and Bayelsa, in collaboration with military authorities had reached an understanding to keep the issue secret. “The incident actually happened at Sigbene near Agge. Both state governments have been collaborating with the military to ensure the rescue of the victims. An agreement was also reached between them to keep mum over the issue upon their release.

This is a top security issue. They were rescued unhurt”, a top government source confided. Recall that four naval ratings were shot dead while others sustained injuries when suspected sea pirates around the border coastal communities of Bayelsa and Delta States attacked an international oil vessel.

The deceased naval personnel, drawn from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, were said to be escorting the vessel carrying the kidnapped expatriates when they were ambushed by the armed pirates. Sequel to the military reinforcement, tension brewed around the communities where the pirates attack happened, compelling many of the residents of the riverine communities of Bayelsa and Delta States, particularly those in Burutu and Ekeremor LGAs, to flee their homes for fear of military invasion. Efforts to get official reactions from the commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, Real Admiral Ibrahim Dewu were unsuccessful. But Navy Director of Information, Commodore Suleman Dahun told a source he was not aware of the abduction and subsequent release of the victims. Dahun however, directed inquiries to the commander NNS Delta.

PoliticsPresidency To CAN: Don’t Politicise Religion by opportunes(op): 6:01pm On Jan 07, 2020
The Presidency has told the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that the politicisation of religion, as forbidden by the constitution, has no place in Nigeria. The presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, while reacting to recent statements from CAN, said the current government shall never tolerate religious intolerance. A

Shehu, who restated government’s support for the freedom to practice whichever belief individuals wished, advised CAN to have a proper perspective of the current challenges in order not to fall into the antics of the terrorists. The statement partly read: “The security forces of Nigeria are working continuously to return those taken hostage by Boko Haram to their families, friends and communities.

In doing this, the government has full confidence in their ability to accomplish the task. “On its own part, government has condemned some of the appalling acts of terror, especially following the festive period. Yet, to continue to see these happenings solely in religious terms – removed from social, economic and environmental factors – simplifies complexities that must be heeded. Not seeing them as they should be is exactly what the terrorists and groups wish: they want Nigerians to see their beliefs as reason to turn against one another. “On the contrary, Christians and Muslims alike are united in their opposition to Boko Haram and the hatred for decency that the infamous group stands for.

“Nigerians must continue to be united in ensuring that they do not subscribe to the terrorists’ message of division. Unfortunately, some leaders and politicians seek to make political capital from our religious differences. As we fight Boko Haram on the ground, so too must we tackle their beliefs: stability and unity in face of their hatred is itself a rejection of their worldview.”

PoliticsDiaspora Trust Fund Underway – Dabiri-erewa by opportunes(op): 6:04am On Jan 06, 2020
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, Diaspora Commission, says the commission is putting a team in place to work out modalities for the establishment of Diaspora Trust Fund. Dabiri-Erewa, who fielded questions from State House Correspondents after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, said the commission was in the process of planning and engaging Nigerians in the Diaspora as to how it can be done.

“We are planning the Nigerian Diaspora Trust Fund because Nigerians in the Diaspora want to invest in their country and they want to contribute. So, the Diaspora Trust Fund will be coming up in this year and a lot of other engagements and activities. “A few countries, like Ethiopia, have a Diaspora Investment Fund. Nigeria should not be an exception. We are working at it. We are hoping we can get everything set in the first quarter of this year,” she added.

On the remittances from Nigerians in Diaspora, she said, “For 2019, we are dealing with about $25 billion as remittances from Nigerians in the Diaspora. We hoping it could get better. There are even areas that are not even captured. The foremost remittances are not even captured; the $500 to your brothers, to your sisters.

“Beyond remittances, there are a lot more that Nigerians in the Diaspora will do for their country. We hope it gets better, we hope that Nigerians in the Diaspora continue to help in resuscitating the Nigerian economy.” Dabiri-Erewa, who said the Nigerians in Diaspora Investment Summit was very successful, added that the commission would not abandon the returnees from South Africa.

“As for the returnees from South Africa, like we said earlier, we have not abandoned them and we’ll not abandon them. In January this year, we’ll be meeting with them again and we are working with SMEDAN and other agencies to see what more can be done for those returnees.

‘And we are appealing to states. I think about three states that have not reached out to returnees to please do so. They are not many and I don’t think it’s a difficult thing to do,” she added. She said the commission had started the process of having a Diaspora database to know exactly the number of Nigerians in Diaspora.

PoliticsCAN Urges Buhari To Halt Troops Withdrawal by opportunes(op): 11:08pm On Jan 05, 2020
The President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Dr. Samson Ayokunle, has urged the Federal Government to suspend its planned withdrawal of troops from some troubled parts of the country. Ayokunle, who spoke in Adamawa State on Sunday while commissioning the CAN Secretariat at the state capital, Yola, said troops withdrawal could embarrass the government. “The embarrassment these terrorists may cause the government if they go ahead to withdraw troops may be too much.

A word is enough for the wise,” he said. According to him, the withdrawal of troops could amount to policy somersault considering recent counter-insurgency which is already yielding results. He said, “I want to thank the Federal Government for not giving up in taking the battle to the haters of peace who are terrorists causing havoc in this region (North East), killing innocent people in reckless abandon.

“I want to thank the military for taking the battle to the front doors and enclaves of this evil and demon possessed individuals. “Please take the battle to their front doors and backdoors, the more. God will not allow terrorist to prevail in that region (North East). “I urge the Federal Government to drop the idea of withdrawing troops from some restive region and troubled places in Nigeria. The action is premature and I see it as a policy somersault.”

While commissioning the N115m CAN Secretariat in Yola, the CAN president congratulated the state CAN Chairman, Bishop Stephen Mamza and his executive members for their initiative. Bishop Mamza, the Catholic Bishop of Yola who became the state CAN chairman in 2017, started the Secretariat project in 2018, to give Adamawa Christians a befitting centre for their activities.

PoliticsHerders/farmers Misunderstanding Sparked Kogi Killings – Koton Karfe Chief by opportunes(op): 7:06am On Jan 05, 2020
Kogi State government has called on the Federal Government to activate emergency response to address the humanitarian crisis threw up by attack on Tawari by gunmen. The appeal is coming as the Ohimege of Koton Karfe, Alhaji Abdulrazak Isa Koto said the attack was as a result of misunderstanding between herders and farmers and has no ethnic and religious undertone.

Daily Trust on Sunday recalls that attack on Tawari in the wee hours of Friday left about 23 people dead and score others wounded. Addressing residents of Tawari, the Deputy Governor Chief Edward Onoja who represented Governor Yahaya Bello described the development as “demonic and unfortunate.” Onoja said “We shall provide security to see how to ensure that this is controlled and that it does not happen again. We have seen and appreciated the extent of the damage.

We have seen that the communities have been hit so badly.” He acknowledged that the crisis has led to humanitarian crisis which required the federal government to come in through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), even as he disclosed that the state government has mandated its relevant agencies to provide immediate succour to displaced persons and survivors.

Administrator of Kogi Local Government Area, Barrister Muhammed Tanko Musa, commended the Kogi State for its timely intervention. At the Ohimege’s palace, where the Deputy Governor and his entourage paid acondolence visit, the paramount ruler said the attack was purely farmers/herders misunderstanding devoid of ethnic, religious or sectional consideration.

PoliticsPa Adama Aduku: Last Moments Of Nigeria’s Oldest WW2 Veteran, By Family by opportunes(op): 8:01am On Jan 04, 2020
...Why he was nicknamed ‘Head of Snake’
...He washed his clothes despite old age

Except for the two enlarged photographs and a condolence register on a table suspended by the wall of a building on the edge of the family compound of Pa Adama Aduku in Abejukolo town, the headquarters of Omala Local Government area of Kogi State, there is hardly a sign to indicate that Nigeria’s oldest World War II veteran has passed on.

The compound was devoid of the usual long faces and pensive mood that would have ordinarily characterized such passing when Daily Trust Saturday visited the town on Thursday, two days after his demise. Few of the children who were around were seen exchanging banters and jokes among themselves. “Daddy wouldn’t have wanted anyone to mourn him having lived a very fulfilled life,” Mrs Pauline Alhassan Adama, one of the daughters, noted. “By the way, to him, showing emotion was a sign of weakness which he never condoned,” another of the kids, Mr Oke Adama, added.

This tough disposition was well captured in a message of condolence scribbled by an anonymous mourner who described the late veteran as a “resilient, principled and uncompromising gentleman” in the register already filled up by many glowing tributes. But his nickname itself exudes fears and sends jitters down the spine of strangers. He referred to himself as “Oji ejo” meaning “Head of Snake” in his native Igala dialect. It is believed that the snake’s venom is stored in part of the head and the snake uses this venom to debilitate and immobilize its prey.

To the veteran therefore, anybody who dared him was bound to suffer the same fate. The name “Oji ejo” as he was fondly called by his contemporaries came about his resistance to any form of oppression, Samuel Adama, one of the sons explained. This resistance to oppression, according to an interview he granted to a newspaper, provoked him into joining the Army even when the thought of that line of career never crossed his mind. “I was coming back from the farm one evening when I saw a man who was younger than me at the time beating our village head.

“The man named Salikawa was a soldier who resorted to beating up our chief for refusing to carry his bag and seeing him off to his house, which was 10 miles away. “When the matter was reported to the District Officer, the chief was advised to obey the soldier in his own interest or face whatever consequences that resulted from that.

“I was very angry and bitter and I made up my mind to join the military so that I could go back to the village and also beat up Salikawa for humiliating our chief,” he had told The Punch newspaper in the interview. He succeeded in enlisting in the Army but his wish of coming back to exert revenge on Salikawa for manhandling the village head never came to pass because, according to Samuel, Salikawa died before Pa Aduku could return from the war.

According to the family account provided by Samuel, Pa Aduku was born at Odomagu, a remote community in Odo district in Omala Local Government area in 1918 and he joined the Army, then called Royal West African Frontier Force, in 1942, in Makurdi, Benue State. He was said to have trained at Auguwan Shanu in Kaduna State and was deployed to India during the Second World War where he fought at Calcutta.

He exited the Army after the Second World War in 1946, discharged in Lagos, rejoined again in 1950 in Zaria and finally exited in 1957. He told the story of how at his dad’s point of discharge on return from India, he had to trek from Apapa to in Ikeja at time when most parts of Lagos were bushes. After he finally exited the Army, the late veteran became a trader, buying yams from Lafiyan Barebari, in current Nasarawa State and taking it to Onitsha for sale.

“I actually grew up to know him on that trade for years before he came back home and settled for agriculture. He was a renowned farmer and was noted for harvesting his yam before any other farmer in Omala Local Government. “He also participated in politics. He was a staunch member of National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in Abejukolo when it produced Governor Apeh Aku in 1979 and Sule Iyaji in Buneu State assembly in 1979 also.

His contemporaries were Alfa Okpanachi, James Omada Ita, Usman Akuta Awodi Ashetu and Oga Agege.Till his death he was a member of qua Ibo Church Abejukolo and participates actively well in every Church activities and developmental projects,” Samuel recounted. Mrs Pauline told our correspondent that he took ill last week. “We suspected he had malaria and it was treated but his condition got worse two days later. So we decided to take him to Grimmad hospital in Ayigba where he died of typhoid,” she said.

She said although he was quite old, they never suspected that the brief illness would claim his life. “He hardly fell ill in spite of his age. He was amazingly strong and walked around unbowed by age,” she added. Also, his youngest daughter, Miss Edna Adama, attributed their father’s good health to his cleanliness. “He abhorred dirt in all ramifications. You can feel from his physical appearance, his dressing and the way his rooms were always kept.

“He was always on white attires and immaculately dressed. And he did his laundry himself because you can never satisfy him. Even if he, per adventure, allowed you to assist him with the laundry, he would rewash them all over. So also were his rooms; he did the cleaning himself,” she explained. According to her, one of the late veteran’s indulgences was his attachment to tea. It was the regular beverage for him.

“He took tea before breakfast and after launch and dinner especially green tea without the milk. Sometimes his menu for dinner is tea only and he always insisted we imbibed the habit of taking tea regularly, saying anybody who takes tea regularly rarely falls sick. Some of us have understandably developed this habit and found it to be one of the healthiest ways of living,” she averred. For Oke Adama, one of those things he cherished about his late father was his love for his children and wives.

The late veteran though a Christian, had four wives, 12 children and 33 grandchildren. The eldest child, Mr Josiah Adama, was born in 1949, while the youngest, Amos Adama was born in 1984. Oke said although the children are from different mothers, their father loved and threat them equally. “He never showed preference for any particular wife or child over another and that was what further united and kept us going. He also ensured that his children both males and females are well educated,” he noted.

As the youngest daughter, Edna said her father adored her. “He would make tea for me and bought gifts for us whenever he was returning from his many business trips. When I finished from the Kogi State College of Education, he bought a motorcycle for me for having successfully completed that tier of education and that’s the depth of his love and encouragement which has spurred us to put in our best in all we choose to do,” she said.

The late veteran’s remaining sibling, Ageji Aduku, also attested to his love and generosity towards his family. “When he was returning from India after the war, he bought me jewelries and other gifts. Also even though I’m married, he always felt I’m his responsibility and always ensured I had the best things in life,” she averred. She said as one of the topmost farmers in the area, her brother ensured she benefited from the first harvests. “He was always the first to harvest yams and this happened in July of every year and he ensured he held the yam festival during the period. “After the festival, my share of the yams would be delivered to me before any other and that’s the kind of life we shared,” she said. She said she was restless when her brother was rushed to the hospital for the illness that later claimed his life.

“He hardly took ill and even those few times he suffered from malaria and headache, he simply took his tea and herbs and got well in no time but this one took him as far as Ayigba and I was apprehensive. “I asked them to take me to him. I needed to see how he was doing and on the eve of his demise, he spoke to me through the phone.

He said I shouldn’t bother coming to see him and that he was okay and will return home tomorrow to see me, only for them to informed the day he was to return to me that he had passed on,” she lamented amidst sobs. The nonagenarian who clocked 99 years late last year said longevity runs within the family and hoped that her elder brother had lived longer. But as she reminisced on the beautiful moments they both shared together as siblings amidst tears, family members have started preparing for his final interment which date is yet to be determined.
