PoliticsBuhari Came Ahead Of His Time — Shettima by opportunes(op): 9:27am On Jan 24, 2020
The lawmaker representing Borno Central in the Senate, Kashim Shettima, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari came ahead of his time. The former governor of Borno State disclosed this in an interview with Daily Trust. Shettima spoke on different issues, among them the theme of the dialogue, ‘20 years of democracy in Nigeria’, APC crisis, Boko Haram insurgency, his support for Prof Babagana Zulum as his successor, the concept of cabal, Chibok girls among others. “When Muhammadu Buhari assumed the mantle of leadership, again, the expectations from Nigerians were over-exaggerated. Sometimes, I feel that Buhari came ahead of his time.

He ought to be the President 50 years from now because some of the things that people see as his weaknesses are his major strength” “Buhari appoints people into positions, and he would give you the leeway, the freedom to be guided by your conscience, and to act according to conventions, rules, regulations and values; but in the Nigerian context, it doesn’t move that way,” he said. He argued that Nigerians should appreciate Buhari for bringing stability to the economy. “And one area that people are not willing to give it to Buhari is that the economy was in the lowest ebb before he assumed the mantle of leadership.

The bare fact is he has brought stability to the economy. For the first time we have been having an expansionary budget, and deliberate efforts are being geared towards addressing our infrastructural deficit. I think he deserves better credit than we are willing to give him” “And most importantly for those of us from the North East, there is nothing as dehumanising as poverty.

And when you add insecurity to it, you compound the whole issues. To the people of the North East, poverty and insecurity are not issues of philosophical dispute but the reality of everyday life. And in the past 20 years of our democratic governance, nobody among the Nigerian presidents understood the peace development nexus better than President Muhammadu Buhari.

By setting up the North East Development Commission (NEDC), I believe it will give a new lease of life to efforts at combating the challenges we are facing in the sub-region, and we hope and pray that with the calibre of management he has put in place, it will not go the way of NDDC,” he added.

PoliticsWe Don’t Need APC For Presidency In 2023, Igbo Group Tells Ngige by opportunes(op): 6:37am On Jan 24, 2020
A socio-political pressure group known as Ndi-Igbo United Forum (NUF) has faulted Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige’s position that the Igbo could only show readiness for the nation’s presidency if they joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). The President General of NUF, Chief Godson Ezenagu, in a statement made available to Daily Trust in Awka, Anambra State capital, described Ngige’s assertion as untrue.

He said the Igbo do not need to join APC to produce the president of the country, rather total mobilisation of people across zones. “All political parties should zone their presidential tickets to the South East in the principle of equity, natural justice and good conscience. Zoning to the zone will kill every agitation in the South East,” he said.

PoliticsTerrorists Kill 8 Soldiers In Borno by opportunes(op): 7:43am On Jan 23, 2020
No fewer than eight soldiers including a lieutenant have been killed, and many others injured, with several missing after insurgents of the Islamic West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked a military formation in Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State on Tuesday, security sources have said. The ISWAP stormed a remote village of Mainok at about 1pm along Maiduguri/Damaturu road in Kaga LGA and opened fire on troops digging trenches to protect their base. The security source said two gun trucks belonging to 121 Task Force Battalion were also forcefully taken by the ISWAP but later recovered by the Police Force.

“We thought they were a friendly force because they rode on a Police Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) and headed towards us while we were digging trenches to fortify our base near Mainok town. “They then opened fire on our soldiers, unfortunately, eight soldiers including a lieutenant were killed instantly and many of our soldiers are still unaccounted for,” the source said.

Similarly, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives of Borno Police Command on Tuesday successfully foiled an ambush and killed five Boko Haram insurgents at Mainok village after they attacked a military base earlier. It was gathered that though the insurgents had engaged in a heavy gun battle with the SARS unit, the unit responded swiftly and overpowered the insurgents.

In a video clip obtained by Daily Trust, the SARS Commander who led the operation, explained to the GOC 7 Division of the Nigerian Army on patrol at Mainok, that his men gallantly, professionally and fearlessly repelled the attack, eliminating some of the Boko Haram members and recovered several gun trucks. The GOC of 7 Division, while hailing the SARS troop, appealed for a strong joint-collaboration between the army and police in prosecuting the counter-insurgency war in Borno, and other parts of the North-East. A top police source told Daily Trust that about five insurgents were killed by the police while others escaped with injuries during the gun duel.

The source added that police recovered four trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns from the terrorists, two of which were earlier taken away from troops in the axis. Meanwhile, the attack on Mainok, about 56 kilometers from Maiduguri along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road by Boko Haram at noon of last Tuesday has aggravated the fear and dejection among the public in Borno and Yobe states over the prospect of ending the insurgency as promised by the military.

The Theater Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen Olusegun Adeniyi, assured the public that the Maiduguri-Damaturu main supply route was now safe for motorists and commuters, after series of attacks on the route in the last one month. Just about 18 hours after he gave the assurance, the terrorists dared the troops to a fight on the road by engaging them in broad daylight fight. Last Sunday night, there was an ‘attempted’ attack in which the Theater Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Olusegun Adeniyi, said he and other officials on patrol had a gun dwell with terrorists along the road, without saying the exact location.

The second was the recent Mainok attack, over 50 kilometers to Maiduguri, in Kaga Local Government Area, by 1pm of Tuesday, where the troops and, later, the police (SARS) had a fierce encounter with the terrorists leading to the killing of several troops and terrorists, as well as the recovery of some gun trucks. These have deepened the fear and despair among the public, especially motorists and commuters, and affected the main section of the economy flowing to Borno State from other parts of the country.

“The attacks in the last one month have reduced commercial trips, but I can tell you that the Mainok clash by the troops and Boko Haram has deepened our despair and drastically reduced the number of commercial trips from Maiduguri to Kano by road,” a Monday Market, Maiduguri textile materials trader, Abubakar Hassan, told Daily Trust.

“I cannot say of number of visits by our kinsmen the attacks have halted in the last two days,” Mohammed Kawu of Shehuri Ward, said, adding, “I was to travel to Damaturu yesterday to give out my niece in marriage, but I could not; in fact the wedding has been postponed.” These attacks have drastically reduced road transport from Maiduguri to other parts of the country enroute Damaturu, and have opened brisk business for airlines, with well-to-do commuters preferring high air fares with guarantee of safety than risk going by road.

“The Maiduguri-Abuja air fare that used to be about N40,000 now costs over N50,000 as the airlines are mostly fully booked,” an anonymous airline worker told Daily Trust.

CultureSultan On State Of Nation: We Are Being Cowed Into Silence by opportunes(op): 6:50am On Jan 23, 2020
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, says traditional and religious leaders that are supposed to hold the nation’s political leaders to account are being cowed into silence. He spoke in Abuja yesterday at this year’s Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace Third Annual General Assembly and Peace Conference, with the theme: “Interreligious Dialogue: Strengthening the Culture of Peace, Justice and Reconciliation”.

He said: “Whoever that takes life whether Christian or Muslim is a criminal and should be treated as such. Everything I heard today is hegemonic. The traditional and religious leaders that are supposed to hold political leaders to account for the people are being muscled into silence.

If youre an emir and you talk too much, you get removed. If you’re an Imam or a Bishop, you need money for charity; but be ready to do business with the devil so that you can do charity.” The Sultan, represented by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, stressed that there was no crisis between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria, saying ignorance had always been the cause of religious tension in the country.

The president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Dr Samson Ayokunle, said he was not in good mood to speak because of the killing of a CAN chairman in Adamawa State, Rev. Lawan Andimi. “From December till now, we’ve continued to lose church leaders and others without any array of hope that it will stop,” he said.

Co-chairmen of the IDFP, Ishaq Kunle Sanni and Bishop Sunday Onuaha, said the event was to ensure a continuous dialogue for peace between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria. The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, stressed the need for dialogue and reconciliation. The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Rev Hassan Kukah said political actors had not shown the willingness to address nation’s challenges.

PoliticsI Won’t Negotiate With Bandits – Kogi Governor by opportunes(op): 9:57pm On Jan 22, 2020
Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello, on Wednesday warned that his administration would deal ruthlessly with all criminal elements in the state, saying he would not negotiate with bandits. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mohammed Onogwu, the governor gave the warning during the North Central/Nigeria Police Regional Security Summit held at Ta’al Conference Centre in Lafia, Nasarawa state today.

It stated that the summit was to deliberate and strategize on how to overcome insecurity through community policing. The theme of the summit was: “Strategic Partnership for Effective Community Policing in the North-Central Zone/FCT”.

Bello said with the cooperation of the security agencies, traditional rulers and citizens of the state, the state dealt with insecurity which was common place before his administration and has become one of the safest states in Nigeria today. He said the criminals who have refused to turn a new leaf should not be negotiated with, assuring the Inspector General of Police that the governors will stand with him in the fight against criminal elements in the society.

Bello said his government has never discriminated against any group of people in the country, adding that those who want to cause unrest will be resisted and treated as criminals. He said his government at some point supported in vaccinating cattle for the Fulanis free of charge several times as part of efforts in engendering peace and harmony between farmers and pastoralists. Bello however said that some bad elements amongst the herdsmen who want to distort the peace of the region and the nation’s peace at large should be dealt with severely.

He said the North Central governors and state governments will collaborate in terms security intelligence gathering and form strong synergy to flush out bandits in the region. He urged citizens and community leaders in the North Central region to play leading roles in identifying bad elements in their domain and reporting same to security agencies with a view to routing criminalitiies out of the region.

PoliticsPDP, Ortom’s Supporters Celebrate Supreme Court Victory by opportunes(op): 5:41pm On Jan 21, 2020
Jubilant supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Samuel Ortom on Tuesday took to the streets of Benue state in celebration, moments after the Supreme Court declared judgement over the state’s gubernatorial tussle. Some of the supporters of PDP and Ortom sang and danced along major streets as well as around the Government House gate while others gathered at drinking joints to celebrate the governor’s victory at the apex court.

A party supporter, Dr. Friday Adakole, said, “it was a sweet victory. We defeat them (APC and candidate) in all the courts. The Supreme Court has however put a final say to the legal tussle. “We know that Benue is PDP and no margin could have given APC victory because we had worked hard to earn the win at the polls. First, God spoke through the people and now the court affirmed it.”

On his part, former minister of State for Education and Chairman Benue State Civil Service Commission, Professor Jerry Agada described Ortom’s victory at the Supreme Court as a true reflection of Benue electorates’ decision at the last general elections. “As an elder statesman, I expected nothing less but victory for our amiable governor having been victorious from both the election tribunal and Appeal Courts and now reaffirmed by the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land,” he said.

Agada therefore called on everyone in the state to support Ortom’s administration to deliver the dividends of democracy to her citizenry, stressing that the governor is a God-fearing man who believes in honesty, justice and accountability and will not hold any grudge against anyone but carry all along for the development of the state.

PoliticsTop Seven Things Leading Ceos Say About Nigeria’s Tech Industry In 2020 by opportunes(op): 4:15pm On Jan 21, 2020
Over the last few years, we have seen a major disruption in Nigeria largely due to the role that technology has played (and is still playing) in modernising the nation’s economy as well as driving products and service innovations across various sectors.

As the African continent is expected to witness a major digital disruption in the next decade, beginning from this year, top chief executives in Nigeria’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry share their thoughts on what to expect this year. It ranges from likely technology innovations, tools, devices and tech-related services that may dominate the industry this very year.

Below are the top 7 predictions for Nigeria’s tech space in 2020: Ngozi Dozie, Co-founder of Carbon (a full digital financial service platform operated by One Finance & Investments Ltd)

1.The re-emergence of QR codes – QR codes are not necessarily new but we have seen a few financial institutions driving merchant adoption in recent months. All the banks already have it as a channel but adoption among merchants has not traditionally been great. However, if banks and fintechs can drive significant adoption among merchants and educate the market on the benefits, the opportunity could be huge. Payment via QR Code.

2.Cryptocurrencies – This is another one that has been here for a while but as volatility reduces, we envisage significant growth in the coming year. Less for speculation for FX trading and more for use cases like cross-border payments for traders/merchants and payments for things like school fees and medical bills. Facebook’s cryptocurrency, Libra.

3. APIs and FinTech collaboration – APIs make it easier to develop products more collaboratively. As the technology landscape across the continent matures, fintechs will have to collaborate and leverage off one another’s strengths to survive the onslaught of well-capitalized and resourced competition.

4. The rise of healthtech/insurtech – With a growing middle class and better access goods and services, we can expect industries that make it easier for us to secure and protect the things that are important to us to grow.

Emerging industries such as healthtech and insurtech (insurance-tech firms) have a great opportunity to address some of the challenges facing us as a nation and there is also great demand for these services Uzoma Dozie, CEO, Sparkle (a full lifestyle/financial platform for digital natives) .

5. Near Field Communication (NFC) – In 2020, NFC is going to be transformative. Tap and Go is the future, and effective of 2020, all cards must be NFC-enabled in Nigeria. It means that the Oyster initiative that really transformed electronic payments for transport in London and commerce, especially in retail in the UK, will be seen here.

What does that mean for consumers? Quite a lot, especially with the advent/coming (for those that are atheist) of the Cashless Nigeria policy, which will put burdens on Corporate Businesses to play a greater and more innovative role in digitizing their value chain. NFC cards with common standards effectively means that smartphones with NFC capabilities and with virtual card apps installed can also be used in touch and go payments.

This also means that users can pay one another by touching their mobile phones too. Innovations such as these, once normalised and given the infrastructure they need to grow in terms of usage, will facilitate a huge rise of electronic person-to-person payments, the last bastion where cash sways strong. Obi Ozor, CEO/Co-founder, Kobo360 (Africa’s leading global logistics firm).

6. More investments in transport infrastructure and trade data capture – With Nigeria signed up to the Africa Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), which should come into effect later this year, the wider adoption of technology will ensure the agreement reaches its full potential. Facilitating the AfCFTA’s goal to integrate Africa will require a higher acceptance of technology from all the elements in the supply chain, which will not only help to reduce the cost of moving goods and increase efficiency, but also help boost the economy in Nigeria and beyond.

Businesses, from SMEs to large corporations, will now be able to expand their customer base to other markets outside of Nigeria like never before. This will in turn increase investments in transport infrastructure and trade data capture, which will assist government bodies to improve the infrastructure that will aid the success of the AfCFTA across key African markets, including Nigeria.

7. Blockchain – Also, this year I believe a lot more forward-looking companies in Nigeria will use emerging technology to transform the way they do business, most especially blockchain. Blockchain technology From a logistics perspective, this will be very important for trading across the continent, and for this reason, Kobo360 is building a blockchain-enabled platform – called Global Logistics Operating System (G-LOS) – which will combine all activities in the lifecycle of the Supply Chain ecosystem into one robust system and connect logistics across Africa.

CrimeNavy Arrests 9 Kidnappers, Rescues 28 Victims by opportunes(op): 2:04pm On Jan 21, 2020
Troops of the Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology have arrested nine suspected kidnappers who have been terrorising communities in Kachia Local Government and other parts of Kaduna State. The troops also rescued 28 kidnap victims who have been reunited with their families. Speaking during the handing over of the suspects to the Department of State Services on Friday in Kachia, Commandant of the school, Rear Admiral Tanko Yakubu Pani said the success recorded was due to four months surveilence of some dangerous criminal syndicates operating in Kachia and other parts of the state.

He said: “We were able to conduct simultaneous surgical operations to effect their arrest in various locations through effective intelligence network in various locations within the state. “Some of them were caught in isolated forests where they were hibernating, while others were caught in hotels and their homes.

“The arrested criminals include Abubakar Duguri alias Kure, Saleh Magaji alias Bodori, Idris Iliyasu, Auwal Yahaya, Monore Abu, Mohammed Wakili, Tanimu Ibrahim alias Sambo, Abdullahi Adamu alias Yellow and Umar Alhassan.” He disclosed that the criminals are responsible for various criminal activities including kidnapping, armed banditry and cattle rustling. He noted that weapons, motor bikes and military camouflage among other items where recovered from the suspects.

According to the commandant, “Victims of the criminals that were unable to meet their demands were instantly killed, others were either maimed or injured while some of the female victims were raped.” While appealing to members of the general public and community leaders to assist with credible information about the disposition of criminals in their domain to enable it protect them better, he assured that the Nigerian Navy will continue to do her best in collaboration with other security agencies to protect lives and properties of citizens of the nation.

“We want to further assure the populace that justice can be delayed but not denied as manifested in the arrest of these criminals. The public should not be intimidated by the threats of these criminals which are intended to discourage them from giving in for mating to security agencies, as this is what the criminals aim to achieve by instilling fear in them.

“Criminality of any kind strives only where there is community support. Once there is no such support, criminals do not settle in the community, that is why we must therefore work collectively to ensure that we put criminals out of business by denying them freedom of action, ” he stated.

He maintained that the Service in collaboration with other security agencies is irrevocably committed to locating and flushing out criminal elements in the state. One of the rescued victims, Peter Zamani said he spent two days with the kidnappers even though N190,000 was paid as ransom.

A Borno State High Court in Maiduguri has remanded Aisha Alkali Wakil, alias Mama Boko Haram, and two other persons in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service for alleged conspiracy and cheating. Politics‘why Mama Rosie Won Daily Trust African Of The Year Award’ by opportunes(op): 8:20am On Jan 16, 2020
The chairman of the African of the Year Prize Committee and former Botswana President, Mr Festus Mogae, last night said Rosalia Mashale won the award owing to her love for “children no one wants.” He said the South African, popularly called Mama Rosie, inspired hope and courage for 5,305 orphans infected by HIV and AIDS since she founded Baphumelele Children’s Home in Khayelitsha. He urged Africans to emulate her in speaking against stigmatisation of HIV and AIDS victims, recollecting that he was the first African president to be tested for HIV.

Mogae, who was also the chairman of the award dinner held in Abuja yesterday, said the committee was unanimous in its decision to honour the recipient because of her commitment to providing loving care to orphans infected with HIV and AIDS, mostly from Khayelitsha, a community afflicted by severest AIDS epidemic in the world.

“What makes Mama Rosie different is not only her managing of an orphanage home, but that she has been receiving abandoned children mostly infected by HIV and AIDS who were considered by their parents and/or society a serious burden,” he said. He said the home had become a beacon of hope for communities as she had given care to about thousands children since she started the orphanage. “Some of the children are now professionals in different fields,” he added.

Mama Rosie is the third South African to receive the award. Media Trust also launched another edition of Kilimanjaro magazine. At the award dinner was the Ambassador of Botswana to Nigeria, Pule Mphothwe; the Ambassador of Zimbabwe, Maxwell Ranga; the Acting British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Atkinson; the High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa, Dennis Mseleku; the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Media Trust Limited, Malam Kabiru Yusuf, among others. PoliticsAPC Candidacy Confusion Forces Nwosu To Withdraw Appeal At Supreme Court by opportunes(op): 3:59pm On Jan 14, 2020
The issue of candidacy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Imo state has forced one of the candidates, Uche Nwosu, to withdraw his appeal at the Supreme Court. Nwosu, who decamped to the Action Alliance (AA) before the election, was said to have also been presented by a faction of the APC as the party’s candidate in the election.

At the resumed hearing of the appeals from Imo State on Tuesday, Nwosu’s counsel, Solomon Umoh (SAN), informed the apex court panel that he has advised his client to withdraw since the apex court had on December 20 disqualified him for laying claim to two political party nominations.

“My lordship, the issue has been addressed as to the validity of the APC candidate. It is not possible for APC to have two candidates,” Umoh said. However, when Umoh indicated he would leave it to the discretion of the panel to decide whether Nwosu can still pursue his other appeal as the candidate of AA, the panel overruled him.

“Nothing can bring him here. That matter is gone. Your client has no locus standi to bring this appeal,” Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun said. As a result, the CJN struck out Nwosu’s appeal including the cross appeal against it brought by Governor Emeka Ihedioha through his counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN).

PoliticsHow Kalu, Adoke Spent Yuletide In Detention by opportunes(op): 6:12am On Jan 14, 2020
Former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu and former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN) were the latest VIPs to spend the 2019 festivities behind bars over corruption charges despite attempts to secure their release on bail. Beside Kalu and Adoke, former governor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye and his Taraba counterpart, Jolly Nyame, are also cooling their heels after being sentenced to 10 years and 12 years respectively for corruption. Kalu was on December 5, 2019 sentenced to a 12-year prison term for diversion of N7.2bn by a Lagos Federal High Court alongside a former commissioner for Finance, Jones Udeogu and his company, Slok Nigeria Ltd. Sources told Daily Trust that he spent only one day at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre in Lagos before he was moved to Kuje Correctional Centre in the FCT on December 7.

He later made a post-sentence bail application seeking to be released on medical grounds. But Justice Abdullahi Liman refused the application, wondering why the haste as the appeal against his conviction on a 39-count charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had not been heard by the Court of Appeal.

Sources close to the former governor said he did not mark the Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year holidays in a special way. The source said there were no special gifts to the inmates of the correctional centre, as “he just stayed on his own.”

On his part, Adoke was arrested in Abuja on his return from the UAE on December 9, 2019 by the Interpol, his lawyer Mike Ozekhome (SAN) said. He was handed to the EFCC for investigation over the Malabu oil deal. He was later detained despite a court order, according to the lawyer. Adoke’s bail application suffered a setback on December 31 after the presiding judge, Justice Othman Musa, returned the casefile to the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court for reassignment to the court where he will be arraigned.

EFCC on January 2 obtained a fresh 14 days from the court pending investigation. One of his lawyers, who pleaded anonymity, said he spent the yuletide in the EFCC facility in Abuja facing interrogation by operatives of the commission and reading. “He was given a decent room, but it cannot be as comfortable as his personal house.

He had no time for any kind of celebration because he was interrogated regularly over the Malabu deal and his lawyers were always there,” the lawyer said. The spokesman of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Francis Enobore, who refused to speak on the condition of Kalu in prison, said the safety and comfort of inmates are of great concern to the service, and as such different kinds of offenders are not detained together. He said the service will not refuse any gift by VIP inmates and other public-spirited individuals and organisations as the correctional facilities nationwide are having shortage of materials.

“We try as much as possible to ensure that inmates are kept well. If it is not well with the coat, it will not be well with the person wearing it. So how can we maltreat or keep them in poor environment. It will be in our interest to ensure they are comfortable. When they are sick, the officials don’t sleep in the night. Everybody is on their toes,” he said.
