BusinessNorthern Group Condemns Political Incitement To Revolt by Orabi(op): 6:13pm On Feb 12, 2024
The North-East Solidarity Movement (NESM, strongly condemned the actions of certain politicians who are shamelessly inciting revolt under the guise of protesting the current state of the nation.

They called on President Tinubu to hold to account politicians and unscrupulous business concerns that hoard essential commodities to exploit the situation and sell at prohibitive prices.

Chairman of NESM, Abbakois Bukar, in a statement, expressed deep concern over the activities of these desperate and unpatriotic individuals.

He said: “It is regrettable that some politicians are determined to provoke the youth, using them as pawns in their pursuit of dubious political agendas. This constant push towards chaos and instability by these malicious forces of destabilization is not only unpatriotic but also insane.”

The NESM calls upon the youth to be cautious and recognize their manipulation in these orchestrated revolts.

Bukar wisely reminds the youth that those who ignite the fire are seldom the ones who will be present to put it out. It is vital for the young generation to remain vigilant and refuse to be misled by these demagogues who seek to benefit at their expense.

The NESM stands for solidarity in the North-East region and advocates for unity and progress. It strongly believes in addressing the challenges faced by the nation through peaceful and constructive means, rather than resorting to the dangerous path of revolt.

Bukar calls on Nigerians to reject the politics of division and fear, and instead embrace harmony and cooperation for the betterment of the nation.

The NESM stands firmly against any attempts to incite violence and chaos, and remains committed to promoting peace and stability in the region.
BusinessAYPA Urges Northern Youth To Shun Instigated Protests By Politicians by Orabi(op): 6:07pm On Feb 12, 2024
The Arewa Youth Progressive Alliance (AYPA), has issued a powerful call to the youth in Northern Nigeria, urging them to resist the temptation of being used as pawns in the political games played by unscrupulous and power-hungry politicians.

The group's spokesman, Inuwa Lawal Kaura, emphasized the dire consequences that can arise when misguided youth allow themselves to be manipulated for political gain, highlighting the tragic example of Libya.

Inuwa Lawal Kaura, speaking on behalf of the AYPA, underscored the importance of youth empowerment and the dangers of being used as "attack dogs" by politicians. He also highlighted the urgent need for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the widespread suffering across the country.

The AYPA called for youth resistance and reiterated the potential consequences of allowing oneself to be used as a tool for political manipulation.

“The Libyan example serves as a stark warning of how misguided actions can lead to the ultimate destabilization and destruction of a once prosperous nation. The youth of Libya were misled into participating in protests that ultimately resulted in chaos, civil war, and the collapse of their country's economy and infrastructure. It is crucial for the youth in Northern Nigeria to learn from this tragic lesson and avoid being exploited for short-term political gains,” the group said.

However, the AYPA's call does not end with a warning against being used as pawns. It also emphasized the urgent need for President Tinubu to take immediate action to address the widespread suffering across the country. The group pointed out that harsh taxation and forex policies have contributed to the spiraling prices of essential commodities, exacerbating the already dire economic situation faced by many Nigerians.

“It is imperative for the government to review these policies and implement measures that alleviate the burden on the most vulnerable segments of society. The youth of Northern Nigeria, like their counterparts across the country, have been disproportionately affected by the economic hardships and social inequalities that persist.

“They deserve a government that prioritizes their well-being and actively works towards creating opportunities for their empowerment. President Tinubu must recognize the urgency of the situation and take concrete steps to address the suffering that plagues the nation," the group said.

The group urged the federal government to take measures to deal with hoarders of food items for maximization of profit at the detriment of the larger majority of Nigerians.

The Arewa Youth Progressive Alliance (AYPA) has been at the forefront of advocating for the well-being and empowerment of Northern Nigerian youth. Their call to shun instigated protests by politicians is a testament to their commitment to the betterment of their community, urging the youth to be vigilant and not fall victim to short-sighted political manipulation.

PoliticsUNOPS Accused Of Importing Mosquito Nets Against Fg’s Directives by Orabi(op): 3:47pm On Feb 09, 2024
THE United Nations Office for Project Services has been accused of recruiting foreign companies to import mosquito treated nets into Nigeria as against the directive of the Federal Government.

A petition sent to the National Assembly and copied the Ministers of Health and Justice, and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), one of the vendors, Rosies Textile Mills Ltd, accused UNOPS of ignoring the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the FG in order to recruit international manufacturers to import long lasting insecticide treated nets (LLIN).

In the memo signed on September 5, 2022 between the Federal Ministry of Health and UNOPS, $64,671,546.04 loan sourced from IsDB shall be used to procoure locally made LLIN for four states of Bayelsa, Edo, Enugu, Kogi and tbe Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Both parties in the MOU agreed that “the goods shall be procured through solicitation. In line with the spirit of the Presidential Executive Order 003, both UNOPS and NMEP (National Malaria Elimination Programme) agree that participation of locally manufactured products is critical for sustainability and to spur local job creation, and therefore international competitive bidding qill only bebused fpr products hat are not currently locally manufactured or of acceptable quality.

Managing director of the Rosies Textile Mills Ltd, Mr. Nnamdi Iro Oji, in a petition said, “LLINs shall be procured through open competitive bidding process involving both local manufacturers who have WHO and NAFDAC certification, and local suppliers who have manufacturers authorisation of WHOPES approved LLINS from local manufacturers.”

But things took a dramatic twist when despite certification by the Ministries of Trade and Investment and Health that there were local manufacturers and suppliers with manufacturers authorisation, UNOPS decided to cancel local competitive bidding it announced.

In the documents shared by the petitoner, UNOPS announced competitive bidding on Thursday, June 2, 2022 calling for “expression of interest for the supply of locally manufactured long-lasting insecticide mosquito nets” as directed by the Federal Government that the nets must be sourced locally.

The UN agent said to be qualified, it expected “the nets are expected to be produced and packaged in Nigeria and must have both NAFDAC and WHO certification to deliver the project within 12 months.”

Rosies Textile Mills Ltd is angry that despite recommendation by the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), the World Bank and Procurement Consultant IMPACT for the project recommending it, UNOPS cancelled the bidding.

The visiting team which went round the country in 2022 showed wrote in its reports to the health ministry, UNOPS and other staekholders foe the project that, “Rosies Textiles Mills, Aba, Abia State, having the required experience and capacity to manufacture and finish/package LLIN locally with the history of timely execution of the large quantities of LLIN in the past, and having been found to possess the capacity for manufacturing 165,000 nets per day with the potential to scale-up should be considered for local patronage pursuant to Executive Order (EO 003).”

The team further highlighted that, “Since Rosies Textile Mills Limited is the only identified local WHO approved and NAFDAC registered LLIN manufacturers, other local suppliers can get manufacturer’s authorisation from the company to enable them qualify for the participation in the exercise for the procurement of LLIN in Nigeria.”

But the company is accusing UNOPS of blackmailing it that it teamed up with two other local suppliers - Danyakubu Global Services Ltd - and Resizar International Co. Ltd it gave manufacturers authorisation to and so flouted the rules.

It responded to the query of collusion to UNOPS saying the terms of the tender which UNOPS published showed that “LLINs shall be procured through national open competitive bidding process involving both local manufacturers who have WHO and NAFDAC certification and local suppliers who have manufacturers authorisation of distributorship of WHOPES approved LLINs from local manufacturers.”

It denied flouting any guidelines to the bidding and said as the only qualified local manufacturer, it could not have colluded with any company.

He accused UNOPS of unfair treatment by unilaterally cancelling the bidding process without informing stakeholders especially the health ministry that gave it the contract to recruit manufacturers and or locls suppliers of the LLINs.

In the document seen, UNOPS announced on newspaper publications of February 6, 2023 that it has commenced fresh bidding process and directed interest vendors to go to its website to participate. But while initially it said it was for local manufacturers and suppliers this time, UNOPS said it was opened for international manufacturers and suppliers.

Rosies Textile Mills Ltd in the person accused UNOPS of over stepping its band and said it is at the receiving end because it wrote the FG about the delay and unilateral cancelation of the local bidding process.

It argued that in the cancellation, UNOPS did not say Rosies “was under investigation for collusion) he said in the petition rather, UNOPS wrote the health ministry that

“It took UNOPS eight months from the tender date and after our petition to write us of investigation of a tender which they claimed to have cancelled and had given us a letter stating reasons for cancelation and inviting us to participate in their international competitive bidding.”

The petitoner further wrote that, “UNOPS does not have power to unilaterally investigate Rosies or any other company without first informing the government and the World Bank after which they have to they have to look at the allegations and approve for UNOPS to carry out.

“In this case, UNOPS did not inform the government their employer instead the government asked them to reverse ethe cancellation and conclude the tender and award to the winner.

“UNOPS has said it was Rosies that won the tender.” It added that “in no time did the tender explicitly state that no one should issue manufacturers authorization to local manufacturers” as “it also included manufacturers authorisation form as part of its returnable form in the tender.”

Amid this, then Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire warned UNOPS in a letter dated May 24, 2023, drawing its attention to the MOU, ordering that “in compliance with Executive Order 003, your office is expected to honour the directive on local content, while by the provision of the MOU, the process for the procurement of LLIN, one of the products manufactured in Nigeria, should have been concluded by December 6, 2022.

While drawing UNOPS’ attention that it delayed the commencement of the tender till December 13, 2022 instead of concluding it by December 6, 2023 and its plan to conclude the exercise by March 21, 2023, through international competitive bidding, the minister said “are in breach of the MOU, and contravention of the Executive Order 003 and 005 of the government, which could trigger litigation involving all stakeholders, who bear the consequences of a delay in the procurement of these products.”

The minister explicitly reminded UNOPS that “the Executive Orders were issued by the President to protect Nigerian industry by ensuring patronage of WHO prequalified products manufactured in Nigeria. Where there is a sole domestic manufacturer of a product in Nigeria, our procurement laws allow effective market survey and price bench marking to achieve value for money, especially when all other conditions are met.

“On these grounds, the abrupt cancellation of the tender does not sit well with us.

“Disregard of WHO certified products locally manufactured in Nigeria violates the Executive Order.”

The development is causing serious upheaval among Textile Manufacturers Association of Nigeria who are aggrieved that any attempt to export the supplies of mosquito nets would further kill local manufacturers.
PoliticsZamfara Rerun: APC Rejects Election Of Mustapha Usman Shinkafi by Orabi(op): 2:28pm On Feb 07, 2024
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has rejected the election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mustapha Usman Shinkafi in the February 3, 2024, rerun polls, insisting the result will not see the light of the day in the election petition tribunal.
In a statement by new media aide to APC chieftain, Dr Sani Shinkafi, Alhaji Yariman Kwaren Ganuwa, said that the election will not stand legally and morally.
He said: “Please carefully read page 4 of the copy of the certified true copy of the judgment delivered by the National and State House of Assembly Tribunal for Zamfara State, holden at Sokoto, Sokoto State dated 21st day of September, 2023, and the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division.
“You will come to the simple conclusion that the final election results were declared by the Returning Officer, is a clear violation of the Electoral Act 2022 and disregard for the rule of law, total rape of democracy and daylight robbery of the constitutional rights of the good people of Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State,” he said.
The statement recalled the result of the 18th March, 2023 Shinkafi state house of assembly elections declared as inconclusive by the courts in the judgment page 4 which showed that APC, scored 13,154 votes, while PDP, scored 12,914 votes.

It noted that the difference between the two candidates was 240 votes before the conduct of the rerun elections.

The statement said the results ought to be continued forward and merged with the rerun elections for final declaration.

It noted that in the rerun election result declared on 3rd February, 2024, the APC got 809 votes, while the PDP scored 951 votes, adding that the difference between the two is 142 votes.

The statement revealed that summary of the total scores for the parties and their candidates if merged by the state house of assembly returning officer the PDP could not be declared winner. The statement noted that the APC had scored 13,963 votes, while the PDP scored 13,865 votes in the earlier election held in 2023.

It therefore stated that the margin of lead by APC candidate Usman Aliyu Mahmud is 98 votes.

“We members of APC in Zamfara State stand with judgements of the two courts, not selection by INEC and its co-travellers in the subversion of the will of the people of Shinkafi Local Government Area.

“The good people of Shinkafi State Constituency should please remain calm. Another legal battle has just begun to reclaim our stolen mandate. Hon. Usman Shettima Mahmud Aliyu of APC remains the authentic winner of the election with the highest lawful votes. The ballot is sacrosanct. We are strongly determined to uphold and protect the integrity of the nation’s electoral process,” the statement reads.

Attached with the statement were copies of the judgment delivered by the Election Petition Tribunal and Court of Appeal Abuja Division, “for members of the public to read and know the truth about the rerun elections and declaration of the illegitimate winner of the election.”
PoliticsRising Inflation Threatens Well-being Of Nigeria's - Northern Elder by Orabi(op): 6:44pm On Feb 06, 2024
Rising Inflation Threatens Well-being Of Nigeria's - Northern Elder

Northern Elders Forum (NEF), deeply concerned about the unchecked rise in inflation in Nigeria, saying that it posed a significant threat to the well-being of Nigeria's.

The forum also said that the cost of living has been steadily increasing, particularly in terms of food prices, leading to widespread hunger and malnourishment.

NEF, in a statement by its Director Publicity and Advocacy/Spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said that the situation demands immediate attention and action from the government.

He said: “It is disheartening to witness the disconnect between the reality on the ground and the actions, or lack thereof, of our leaders. While millions of Nigerians are struggling to put food on the table and make ends meet, those in power seem to be living in isolation or denial. This indifference to the suffering of the people they are meant to serve is deeply troubling.

“The consequences of this unchecked rise in inflation are devastating for ordinary Nigerians. Families are finding it increasingly difficult to afford basic necessities, as the prices of essential commodities such as rice, beans, and cooking oil continue to skyrocket. This dire situation has resulted in a rise in malnutrition, particularly among children, as families are forced to prioritize their limited resources.

“Moreover, the impact of inflation extends beyond the realm of food prices. Small businesses are struggling to survive as the cost of raw materials and transportation continues to rise. Unemployment rates are soaring as companies are unable to sustain their operations amidst mounting expenses. This vicious cycle of inflation and economic decline is pushing our nation further into poverty and despair.

“In light of these challenges, we demand urgent measures from the government to address this crisis before it plunges the nation into greater conflict and chaos. The welfare of its citizens must be prioritized, and policies must be implemented to alleviate the burden of inflation. This includes increasing agricultural productivity, investing in infrastructure to reduce transportation costs, and implementing social safety nets to support the most vulnerable members of society.

“Additionally, it is imperative that the government takes decisive steps to curb corruption and wasteful spending. The mismanagement of public funds only exacerbates the inflationary pressure and erodes the trust of the people. Transparency and accountability must be upheld at all levels of government to restore confidence in our leadership.

“The unchecked rise in inflation in Nigeria is a pressing issue that demands immediate attention and action. The government must acknowledge the suffering of its citizens and implement effective policies to alleviate the burden of inflation. By prioritizing the welfare of its people, curbing corruption, and promoting transparency, Nigeria can overcome this crisis and pave the way for a brighter future. It is time for our leaders to rise to the occasion and address the challenges facing our nation.”
PoliticsCNG Call For Urgent Action To Address Rising Costs Of Commodities by Orabi(op): 3:01pm On Feb 06, 2024
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), on Tuesday, expressed deep concern over the continuous rise in prices of essential commodities in Nigeria, and sought urgent intervention by the government.

The coalition, in a statement signed by its national coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, lamented that the soaring costs of food items and other necessities have left Nigerians in a state of despair, struggling to provide for their families and faced with unaffordable basic necessities.

He said: “Despite the existence of the Consumer Protection Board, which should safeguard the interests of the people, the inaction on their part has only worsened the situation, fueling frustration and anger among citizens.

“This inaction has further aggravated the suffering faced by the majority of Nigerians, while a privileged few continue to live in opulence. It is disheartening to witness such a stark contrast between the lives of the elite and the suffering of the masses, and it is high time that resources are utilized for the benefit of all citizens.

“The exorbitant hike in food prices in Nigeria is not a result of natural market forces, but rather the self-serving interests of unscrupulous elites. These elites have manipulated the forex market, causing a scarcity of foreign exchange and subsequently driving up the cost of importing essential food items.

“The current forex racketeering and hikes in commodity prices can be attributed to officials from the previous administration who are seeking to conceal their ill-gotten wealth. These individuals are converting their looted funds into foreign currencies, particularly dollars, as it is easier to hide large sums in foreign currency. Additionally, these officials are responsible for hoarding foreign currencies, creating an artificial scarcity that fuels the demand and subsequently increases the prices of essential commodities.

“The CNG firmly believes that the individuals responsible for the current hardships faced by Nigerians are those who have historically received substantial unregulated allocations of foreign currencies from the government. However, with the government now closing the doors on such practices, these individuals have resorted to manipulating commodity prices to maintain their profits.

“Additionally, influential business holders who control production and importation further contribute to the prevailing difficulties. These individuals, often operating within monopolistic structures, have a significant influence on the availability and pricing of essential commodities. By controlling the supply chain, they can dictate prices and exploit the market to their advantage.

“In addition to these factors, the CNG finds it unacceptable for the government to complicate the situation further with multiple taxation. The Nigerian Customs Service, among other agencies, imposes excessive taxes and levies on businesses, hindering their growth and increasing the cost of goods. This burden is ultimately passed on to the consumers, exacerbating the already high prices. Moreover, the recent hikes in tariffs for utilities, such as electricity, only add to the financial strain faced by Nigerians.”

The CNG therefore called for urgent intervention of the government to address the problem, which has made life miserable for many ordinary Nigerians, adding that the failure to take appropriate action may result in national chaos.

“In light of the prevailing circumstances, the Coalition of Northern Groups calls for swift and decisive action from the Federal and State Governments.

“It is imperative that these manipulative practices are exposed and those responsible are held accountable. We demand that the government identifies, exposes, and prosecutes those individuals responsible for the current hardships imposed on its citizens.

“Furthermore, we urge the government to recognize the adverse effects of excessive taxation and tariff hikes and take immediate steps to review and reverse these policies. This action will alleviate the financial burden faced by citizens and create an environment conducive to economic recovery.

“We demand that a national executive council meeting be convened, bringing together representatives from the Central Bank of Nigeria, banking and financial institutions, Bureau De Change operators, and other stakeholders. Urgent action is needed to address the free float of the naira and other damaging policies that further impoverish the majority while enriching a few.

“The time for action is now. Failure to take urgent measures may result in national chaos as the frustration and anger of the people reach a breaking point, potentially leading to a complete breakdown of law and order.”

CrimeSlug: Noa Seeks Support Of Fuji, Juju Musician To Stop Abuse Of Naira by Orabi(op): 5:12pm On Feb 04, 2024
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), has appealed to afro beat musicians to partner with the Agency in the campaign to stop the reckless abuse of the National currency at social events.

The Director General of the Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu in a letter to both the Fuji Musicians Association of Nigeria (FUMAN) and the Association of Juju Musicians of Nigeria (AJUMN) condemned the indiscriminate spraying of Naira notes at social events, reminding them of the provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 and the need to preserve the integrity of national symbols including the naira.

The CBN Act makes it punishable by fines, imprisonment or both for any person caught “spraying off, dancing or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the bank during social occasion or otherwise.

The Agency, according to him, seeks the cooperation of the musicians’ groups to enlighten members on the legal implication of the abuse of the Naira; create new rules within the organizations that forbid the spraying of currencies on their members ; and to use their lyrics to campaign against the abuse of national symbols.

IPAC disassociates From Plateau State Chapter's Press Conference On PDP Exclusion On rerun election

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), distanced itself from the press conference held by the Plateau State chapter of the council regarding the exclusion of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the forthcoming rerun election in the state, particularly in Plateau north.

The National Publicity Secretary of IPAC, Chinyere Ogekalu, in a statement, cautioned the leadership of the Council in Plateau State is hereby to operate within the ambit of the Code of Conduct as matters of this nature are exclusively within the purview of the national.

IPAC claims that the Plateau State chapter's actions do not represent the outcome of the consultative stakeholders' meeting that was held by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with the leadership of all political parties on December 18, 2024, in Abuja.

Ogekalu said: “The subject matter which led to the needless press conference was exhaustively discussed on the day of the meeting where it was communicated to all stakeholders including the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the party will not be part of the rerun in Plateau owing to a subsisting judgement of Court barring the party from participating in the rerun election.

“While the court judgement is already being challenged by the concerned political party, it is unwise for any individual or group of individuals under any guise to embark on any course of action capable of inciting violence or derailing the fragile peace in Plateau State.

“The leadership of the Council in Plateau State is hereby cautioned, hence admonished to operate within the ambit of the Code of Conduct as matters of this nature are exclusively within the purview of the National.

“All stakeholders in Plateau State and other States where the rerun elections will be taking place are enjoined to eschew violence and go out peacefully to exercise their franchise by electing credible individuals that will best serve their collective interest.”

We’re prepared for bye-elections - NNPP

New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has said that the party would be participating in the by-elections slated for Saturday in 26 states to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (NNPP).

The National Legal Adviser of the NNPP, Robert Hon, disclosed this in Abuja, during a press briefing, said that the party has commenced the sale of forms for the Edo State election.

The party also condemned what he described as misconduct of its Adamawa State chairman and Secretary of the Party, Phineas Elisha and Yerima Sahabo, and asked them to stop parading themselves as leaders of the great Party.

He noted that the NPP primaries election for Edo state will be held on February 23rd to pick candidates and the sale of forms for Ondo will commence in April.

He said: “We also want it placed on record that this group of people who have ceased to be members of our Party, even as affirmed by a valid Court judgment, have individually and collectively suffered losses at the Courts in their misadventures of fighting NNPP.

“Their efforts to drag the judiciary into their shenanigans have been stoutly resisted by the Courts which have consistently asked them to go and settle with their authentic party leadership.

“We have tried to avoid being distracted by their activities which we see as a journey to nowhere. However, concerns by well- meaning Nigerians who continue to call have compelled us to respond now. We wish to use this medium to appeal to Nigerians to shun these elements who have no locus as far as NNPP is concerned.

“We make bold to say that they are just a mere group of political adventurists and crass opportunists who themselves know they are only engaged in an illegal and unprofitable venture.”

He added, “We have called this Press Conference in order to advise the general public to be wary of this renegade group, and to avoid doing any business with them on behalf of NNPP, as in the end, it will amount to violation of the law.

“We wish to state emphatically that no institution including INEC recognizes them. And all their efforts to get this elusive recognition through the back door have met with failure. Perhaps they have forgotten that the whole world was watching when they colluded with the enemies of the party to claim that our Action-Governor. Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, was not a member of the Party when he contested the March 18, 2023 election.

“They addressed a so-called world press conference about it. They did not stop at that. They were placed as advertorial in major newspapers in the country. They were echoing the voice of their paymasters who wanted to snatch the Kano State Governorship seat by all means.”

“Secondly, we need media support to enlighten people about this, we can only do that with the collaboration of media houses.

“In terms of making sure people enjoy the quality of what we intend to provide, the simply thing to do is to make sure the information is out there, and what this means is that we are going to do a lot of publicity about it,” he said.

Fagbohun said that the Z-Korting Project was targeted at young fresh minds and would be built in Idu, Karmo, Jahi and Cafe City, Gwarinpa respectively.

“The system of housing issue in abroad is quite different from what we currently have here in Nigeria. We want to make sure that whoever is buying a house, is buying a house that gives them the right type of comfort and support that they need to exist, live, work, eat and play in one space,” Anetor said.

He stated that the stress and difficulties in securing housing had made so many couples to reduce the number of children they plan to have, a situation he said it was different during the period of our parents and great grand parents.

Anetor said that the firm is directly working with the works and housing ministry to make sure that the housing is more affordable and meet the requirements of Abuja populations.
