The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Northeast Chapter, has strongly criticized former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, for his recent public support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The group described Dogara’s actions as a "political somersault," accusing him of hypocrisy and inconsistency. Northeast Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Abubakar Isah Waziri, in a statement, expressed disappointment, alleging that Dogara’s newfound admiration for President Tinubu is driven by personal ambition rather than genuine political principles. He also said that Dogara is trying to pull a blind wool over the eyes of Northerners, pretending to be playing the superman of arewa people, when in actual fact he is a desperate office/ position-seeker who has since lost his political relevance. The CNG called on Northerners to remain vigilant and hold their leaders accountable for actions that affect the region's progress and unity. Waziri said: “We therefore wish to state, for the records, as follows. Former Speaker Yakubu Dogara’s sudden U-turn is nothing but a desperate attempt to curry favor and secure political patronage from the Tinubu administration “Dogara’s hypocrisy is an insult to Northerners. As Speaker of the House of Representatives, he had the power to champion the region’s development but failed miserably. We challenge him to name a single meaningful contribution he made to his constituency or the North during his tenure. “It is laughable that Dogara now parades himself as a champion of Northern interests. His record is one of betrayal and division. Through his so-called Middle Belt agenda, Dogara promoted ethno-religious bigotry, stoking disunity and undermining Northern cohesion. He has done more harm than good to the region he now claims to defend. “Dogara’s sudden praise for Tinubu is not about patriotism or principles, it is about positioning himself for political favors, whether as SGF or a potential running mate in 2027. Dogara’s opportunism knows no bounds, and his desperation is an embarrassment to the North. “The North deserves genuine, selfless leaders, not failed politicians who exploit the region’s struggles for personal gain. Dogara’s antics are not only shameless but also dangerous. Northerners must reject his deceitful campaign and demand better leadership." |
The Coalition of Youths for Vanguards for Democratic Solidarity (CYVDS), has expressed concern over the continued illegal detention of Alhaji Bello Badejo, a community leader and peace advocate in Nigeria. Alhaji Badejo, recognized for his efforts in fostering unity and development across communities, was reportedly arrested on December 9, 2024, by soldiers under questionable circumstances. Reports indicate he is being held in substandard conditions, with limited access to his family, friends, and essential medical care. CYVDS Chairman, Comrade Rabiu Abubakar Mato, in a statement, condemned the detention as a violation of human rights and an affront to justice and democracy. The coalition called for an immediate and independent investigation into the actions of the military personnel involved, urging the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to ensure accountability. Mato said: “This is not only an abuse of his human rights but also an affront to justice, democracy, and the rule of law which should ordinarily guide our democratic sojourn. This latest arrest is the second such incident, as Alh. Badejo was previously detained for nearly five months in early 2024 without criminal conviction. “His only “crime” appears to be his role as a leader in the Fulani association, where he has been working to improve his community through plans to build a mosque and a market. These initiatives, aimed at fostering peace and economic development, are entirely legitimate and should never have been used as a pretext for harassment or unlawful detention. “We categorically state that Alh. Bello Badejo is not a terrorist, nor has he been involved in any criminal activities. The accusations levied against him are baseless, and the treatment he has received is completely disproportionate to his actions. “The CYVDS condemns in the strongest terms the unlawful actions of the military personnel involved and calls for an immediate and thorough investigation by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa into this matter. “We are especially concerned for the health and well-being of Alh. Badejo, who, due to his previous detention, has suffered significant physical and mental harm for which he had to seek for medical attention within and outside the country.” CYVDS believes that denying Badejo access to medical care and family members is not only inhumane but also constitutes a violation of his basic rights as a Nigerian and human being. He added, “As a coalition of youths committed to democratic principles and justice, we demand that the Federal Government immediately order military authorities to release Alh. Bello Badejo and allow him to seek the medical attention he urgently requires. “We also urge the Government to guarantee that no citizen, regardless of their background or position, is subjected to illegal arrest, detention, or mistreatment. We call for an end to this pattern of unlawful behaviour by the military, and we demand that all relevant authorities take swift action to protect the rights and dignity of every Nigerian. “The CYVDS will continue to advocate for the rights and privileges of Nigerians and will not rest until justice is served.” |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has criticized the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for its recently released Crime Experienced and Security Perception Survey (CESPS) 2024, describing it as misleading, fabricated, and politically motivated. It would be recalled that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently released a report titled, 'Crime Experienced and Security Perception Survey (CESPS) 2024,' claiming that between May 2023 and April 2024, 614,937 Nigerians were killed; 2,235,954 kidnapped, while an astonishing ₦2.2 trillion paid as ransom. National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, in a statement, criticized the report for its lack of transparency and rigorous methodology. Charanchi said: “We categorically reject the report and its findings as flawed, unfounded, and complete fabrication that does not represent the verifiable reality in the North and Nigeria as a whole. “The NBS report lacks transparency and rigor in its methodological approach. By failing to provide clear, verifiable data collection methods and definitions, the report comprises its credibility.” Highlighting the absurdity of the claims, Charanchi noted that it is illogical to suggest impoverished communities could amass ₦2.2 trillion for ransoms within a year. “Even global ransom data doesn’t support such inflated figures, making this claim not just absurd but malicious.” The CNG emphasized the progress made by security forces in addressing insecurity in Northern Nigeria. Recent successes include the elimination of bandit camps, improved safety along highways like Abuja-Kaduna, and the significant reduction in kidnapping incidents. He added, “We demand full disclosure of the sources and methodologies behind these figures. Nigerians deserve transparency, not politically motivated fabrications. “The CNG is dismayed by the report's attempt to disproportionately highlight the North-West and North-East zones as epicenters of crime, including home robbery, livestock theft, and murder while ignoring the complexity of security issues in other parts of the country, including urban centers in the South, where reports of organized crime, cultism, and cybercrime are equally prevalent. “The report’s conclusion that over 51 million crime incidents occurred in Nigeria, with the North-West leading at 14.4 million, is not only staggering but also statistically implausible. “These exaggerated figures cast doubt on the authenticity of the survey, raising the question: was this an attempt to fit preconceived notions rather than reflect actual data?” The CNG reiterated its commitment to fostering peace and development across Northern Nigeria and called on all stakeholders to prioritize unity and transparency over sensationalism. The CNG similarly debunks the purported payment of such humongous sums as ransom by Nigerians. It defies basic logic and common sense for poverty-stricken destitute to mobilise such resources for terror groups. How could struggling rural communities, ravaged by poverty, amass ₦2.2 trillion for ransoms in just one year? Even global ransom data pales in comparison, rendering this claim not only absurd but malicious. The CNG not only questions the figures for the killing but also reminds the NBS that, with all challenges, Nigeria has not been in a full-fledged war situation akin to happenings in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and elsewhere. According to the NBS, 614,937 had been killed in just 12 months. This translates to killing 51,244.75 every month and killing 1,684.76 Nigerians daily. Let us quickly juxtapose this data with the war-ravaged countries to draw comparative conclusions. Despite sustained bombardment in the Ukraine-Russia War, the United Nations reported that there were 10,582 civilian deaths since February 2022. In the Sudan civil war of 14 months that destroyed the country’s capital, 61,000 deaths were recorded with all destruction in Khartoum. Again, the Israeli continuous aerial bombardment and ground invasion of Gaza strip recorded about 50,000 causalities since the start of the war on October 8, 2023. Therefore, the NBS figure does not only mischievously fabricate figures but also cast an irreversible stain on the reputation and integrity of the NBS as an institution. This is because Nigeria is never near any of the above countries that should have recorded such a jaw-breaking death toll. This is preposterous. Facts Show Security Wins, Not Losses The CNG argues that respected sources, including The Nation newspaper, confirm progress in the fight against banditry: “Several notorious bandits like Nasanda Alhaji Karkuzu have been eliminated by security forces.” (The Nation, December 2024). Kidnapping incidents have also dropped to record lows over the past year. These truths debunk the NBS’s exaggerated claims. In the same vein, Security forces have decimated over 22 camps of terrorists in the North West region of Nigeria. In the North Central, there was significant successes in tackling banditry and criminality. Abuja – Kaduna highway had been improved security wise as commuters ply the road without fright of being the next victim of kidnapping and banditry. Calculated Attempt to Kill Investment By peddling such exaggerated figures, the NBS risks discouraging investment in Nigeria particularly in the North where the figures are outrageously ridiculous. This smack of an orchestrated plot to economically sabotage the prospect of investment in the region |
The Nigerian Youths for Good Governance (NYGG), has called on the Federal Government and the military to release the leader of Miyetti Allah, Bello Badejo, unconditionally. NYGG Executive Director, Alhaji Ado Mohammed, in a statement, expressed “deep concern and dismay at the recent illegal arrest and detention of Alhaji Bello Badejo, a prominent leader of the Fulani community and an advocate for peace and development in Nigeria.” Mohammed said that Badejo was taken into custody by soldiers on 9 December 2024 under questionable circumstances. Mohammed added that this was the second such incident, as Badejo had previously been detained for nearly five months in January 2024 without due process or justification. He said: “The NYGG unequivocally condemns this blatant violation of his fundamental human rights and demands an immediate investigation into the actions of the soldiers responsible for his unlawful detention. “Alhaji Bello Badejo has been accused of offences he is not guilty of. As a respected leader of the Fulani association, he has been working towards the betterment of his community, including plans to commission a mosque and a market for the economic upliftment of his people. “The NYGG believes these activities, grounded in peace-building and development, are not criminal acts and should not be grounds for such unjustified harassment. We strongly denounce any attempt to silence him or malign his character for his lawful contributions to his community. “It has come to our attention that Alhaji Badejo is currently being held in a dungeon-like facility, and reports indicate that he has been denied access to his family and friends. “This inhumane treatment is unconscionable, especially considering that his previous detention caused significant harm to his health. “The NYGG calls on the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to urgently investigate the circumstances surrounding Alhaji Badejo’s arrest and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. “Furthermore, we demand the immediate release of Alhaji Bello Badejo and call on the Federal Government to ensure he is granted access to the medical care he desperately needs. “We will not tolerate any further violations of his rights, and we stand in solidarity with his family and his community in demanding justice. “The NYGG urges the Nigerian authorities to respect the rule of law, uphold the human rights of all citizens, and ensure that no individual is subjected to such arbitrary treatment based on their ethnicity, community leadership, or religious activities." |
As we approach the end of the year, Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) proudly reflects on a year of substantial progress and milestones. WiM-Africa has continued to strengthen its role in advocating for the rights and empowerment of women in the mining sector, particularly in Africa. Through transformative initiatives, strategic collaborations, and ongoing advocacy, the organization has made a significant impact across the continent. One of the standout achievements of the year was WiM-Africa’s support for Comfort Ezekiel, a young girl from Kogi State, Nigeria, who lost her arm in a mining accident. Comfort’s life has taken a positive turn as WiM-Africa fully funded her education, providing a vital opportunity for her to rebuild her future despite the tragic setback. This initiative aligns with WiM-Africa’s commitment to creating pathways for women and children in mining-affected communities to access education and a better future. The launch of the Voices from the Pits (VoC) program has also been a monumental success. With the participation of 138 implementing partners across 36 countries, this program is advocating for the removal of children from hazardous mines and promoting the provision of sustainable livelihoods in mining communities. The program is gaining significant momentum, with WiM-Africa driving policy changes and engaging stakeholders to ensure children at the mines have access to safe educational opportunities. WiM-Africa is also deeply involved in data collection efforts regarding mining communities, working closely with local partners to understand the needs of these areas and ensure the proper measures are in place to transition children from the mines to schools. In 2024, WiM-Africa strengthened its governance through the appointment of a new board, which brings diverse leadership and expertise. The organization has also expanded its reach through partnerships with the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) and Resource4Africa. These collaborations are critical in advocating for responsible mining practices and ensuring that African leaders are at the forefront of shaping the future of the sector. In line with its mission to support women’s leadership in the mining sector, WiM-Africa has been advocating for greater representation of women miners on boards, in the field, and across various commodities and services. This includes supporting initiatives that provide funding to artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM), with the goal of driving more sustainable practices and empowering these miners with the tools they need to succeed. In a landmark achievement, Dr. Comfort Asokoro-Ogaji, Executive Director of WiM-Africa, was recognized as one of the WIM100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining for 2024. This prestigious acknowledgment is a testament to her pioneering leadership, resilience, and advocacy for women in mining. The WIM100 recognition by the Women in Mining UK (WIMUK) honors trailblazers who are making significant contributions to the mining industry, ensuring that it operates in a responsible, sustainable, and inclusive manner. Dr. Asokoro-Ogaji shared her thoughts on the recognition, stating, “This recognition is not just a personal achievement; it reflects the collective efforts of WiM-Africa, our partners, volunteers, and supporters across the continent. Together, we are making a tangible impact in the mining sector, advocating for gender equality, responsible practices, and the empowerment of women and communities.” A notable achievement is the Participation in Cornwall Mining and Geothermal Tour. In line with WiM-Africa commitment to advancing sustainable mining practices and empowering women in the industry, the Executive Director of Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa), participated in a transformative tour of leading mining and energy facilities in Cornwall, United Kingdom (UK). The tour included visits to Cornish Metals, Eden Geothermal Grinding Solutions Ltd (GSL), British Lithium and Imerys China Clay Operations, providing invaluable insights into cutting-edge technologies and best practices in mining, energy, and mineral processing. The knowledge gained from this tour has been instrumental in enhancing WiM-Africa leadership understanding of the improvements needed in mining operations, particularly in terms of sustainability, safety, and efficiency. It also provided deeper insights into the role of laboratories in the mining process and the importance of integrating advanced technological solutions into operations. This tour organized by the Women in Mining UK with notable sponsors underscored the value of global knowledge exchange and collaboration, further reinforcing WiM-Africa’s mission to uplift women in mining and promote responsible mining practices across Africa. The experience will directly contribute to the organization’s continued efforts in supporting the professional growth of women in the industry and advocating for environmentally sustainable mining practices. As WiM-Africa looks ahead to 2025, the organization is focused on expanding its existing programs and launching new initiatives to create a more significant impact across Africa. This includes scaling up the VoC program, launching additional mentorship and capacity-building initiatives, and deepening its partnerships with stakeholders, including corporate organizations, universities, international NGOs, and African leaders. Dr. Asokoro-Ogaji emphasized the importance of these collaborations, stating: “Our success is dependent on the strength of our partnerships. By working together, we can create lasting change, promote responsible mining practices, and ensure that women have a seat at the table in decision-making processes. The future of the mining sector in Africa depends on our collective commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and empowerment.” WiM-Africa’s vision for 2025 is to empower even more women in the mining sector, creating opportunities for education, leadership, and sustainable development. |
The Arewa for Justice Assembly, has condemned the unlawful detention of Bello Badejo by the Nigerian military, describing the action as unjust, unconstitutional, and a gross abuse of power under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Musa. They also criticized the military’s blatant violation of Bello Badejo's fundamental human rights, which has inflicted severe trauma on his family and further tarnished the military's reputation. In a statement issued by the group’s National Chairman, Comrade Musa Garba Yola, urged all relevant authorities and stakeholders to intervene to ensure justice prevails in this matter. He said: “Bello Badejo, who was earlier detained for six months without any charges and subsequently declared innocent, was already battling serious health complications, so severe that he had to be flown to Egypt for treatment. It is shocking and inhumane that, despite his fragile health, the military rearrested him on his cattle farm. “His wife, during a recent press conference, revealed the heartbreaking details that Bello Badejo was already on medication when the military unlawfully seized him again. “This action by the military is a flagrant defiance of constitutional provisions and a stain on the principles of justice and fairness that Nigeria claims to uphold. Detaining a citizen without charges or access to the courts is a gross violation of the law and cannot be tolerated in a democratic society. “The Arewa for Justice Assembly categorically rejects this illegal act and demands the immediate and unconditional release of Bello Badejo. We also call for his urgent reunion with his family, who have endured unwarranted emotional and psychological distress. “We support the family’s plea for the intervention of all relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure justice prevails. “The military’s continued mistreatment of Bello Badejo poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s image both locally and internationally. It is imperative that the Nigerian military acts within the confines of the law to restore confidence in its operations and leadership.” The Arewa for Justice Assembly reiterated its demand for justice, calling on the Nigerian military to immediately release Bello Badejo and act within the principles of the law. This matter is not just about Bello Badejo; it is about the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law in Nigeria. We will not allow the rights of Northern Nigerians or any citizen to be trampled upon in this manner. Justice must prevail. Release Bello Badejo now. |
The Patriotic Youth for Better Nigeria (PAYOBEN), on Tuesday, called for the immediate and unconditional release of Bello Badejo, condemning his detention by the Nigerian military as unlawful, inhumane, and a violation of constitutional rights. It also outlined several points of contention surrounding Badejo’s ongoing ordeal, describing it as a “dangerous precedent” that threatens Nigeria’s democratic values. The youth group issued this strong rebuke in a statement by its Chairman, Moses Adasu Makurdi, accusing the military of gross abuse of power under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Musa. Makurdi said: “Bello Badejo’s ordeal is a dangerous precedent that must not stand: Unlawful Detention: Bello Badejo was held for six months without charges, only to be declared innocent before his release. What crime, then, justified his rearrest? “Health Crisis Ignored: After falling seriously ill from the initial detention, Bello Badejo had to be flown to Egypt for treatment. Rearresting a man in fragile health—already on medication—defies all humanity and logic. “Trauma on Family: His family has been pushed to the brink, emotionally and psychologically. No Nigerian family deserves this torment. “Violation of the Constitution: Detaining a citizen without trial is unconstitutional, illegal, and unacceptable in any democracy. The Nigerian military is not above the law. Damage to Nigeria’s Image: This unlawful act risks denting the credibility of our military and Nigeria’s image locally and internationally. “We demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Bello Badejo; Reunion with his family without further delay; A public explanation for his unlawful rearrest; Urgent intervention by stakeholders, civil society, and the authorities to stop this abuse of power. “We will not allow this act of injustice to go unchallenged. Nigeria is a nation governed by laws, not brute force. If Bello Badejo is not released, we will mobilize national and international awareness to expose this unconstitutional assault on justice.” |
The Movement for National Reformation (MNR) on Monday, called on President Bola Tinubu to revert to Nigeria’s 1963 Constitution and discard the 1999 Constitution to foster national unity and promote true federalism. The group also emphasized the need to restructure the country, advocating for a return to the 1963 Constitution amended to address contemporary realities. MNR’s North Central Zonal Coordinator, Jonathan Akuns, disclosed this in Abuja, during a press briefing, stressed the importance of dialogue over violence in achieving national cohesion They believe such a step would provide a peaceful and inclusive approach to governance. He said: “Now that we have nurtured democracy for over 20 years, it is time to go back to a real federal system of governance. Violence would not be a useful approach to anyone at all. Non-violent dialogue and conversation are the way to go.” The MNR also unveiled stickers bearing the slogan “Restructure Nigeria.” Akuns linked their call for restructuring to the centenary celebration of Chief Anthony Enahoro, a nationalist and founder of the MNR. He noted that non-violent methods have proven effective in addressing national issues globally, citing the peaceful dissolution of the Soviet Union as an example. He proposes recalling the 1963 Constitution, which was suspended by military decree in 1966, and updating it to address current realities. Akuns explained that under this framework, the existing 36 states would serve as federating units, with provisions for boundary adjustments and referenda to allow homogeneous or heterogeneous ethnic groups to form their own units. He added, “The 1963 Constitution provides a legal framework to pursue the re-federalization agenda, this would enable Nigeria to organize and manage itself effectively while fostering national unity.” Akuns highlighted the security implications of restructuring, stating that the establishment of state police under a re-federalized system would be inevitable and would improve security nationwide. He urged the National Assembly and the President to act promptly, warning that delays could exacerbate violence and insecurity in various parts of the country. In marking the 100th birth anniversary of Chief Enahoro, Akuns called on Nigerians to embrace dialogue as a tool for achieving peace and development. The MNR reiterated its commitment to fostering national dialogue and thanked the media and citizens for supporting its mission.

The National Council on Information and National Orientation at its 48th session in Kaduna during the weekend adopted proposals from the National Orientation Agency (NOA), seeking for states to partner with the Agency for the implementation of two of the institutionalisation policies of the National Identity Projects. The two memoranda submitted by NOA include seeking for the restoration of dignity and standardisation of national symbols and the implementation of the provision of the National Values Charter (NVC) at the sub-national levels of government. Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, Director General of the NOA who submitted the proposals as Council memo no NCI/48/2024/14 had notified the council of the earlier approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of measures to revive Nigeria’s value system as part of the National Identity Project. Specifically, the adopted memo seeks to implement the approved strategies across all levels of government, education, and media fostering a unified national identity and value system. In a statement by NOA Deputy Director of Press, Mr. Paul Odenyi, said that with the adoption, states are to work with the NOA to establish Citizens Values Brigade in all schools in Nigeria, develop a curriculum for citizenship studies as a compulsory subject from primary to tertiary levels, integrate the NVC into retreats for government officials and support local local cartoon creators to promote Nigerian values and heroes. Another expectation of the states in line with the Council resolution is to join the diverse committee for the promotion of the NIP which will incorporate value orientation into NYSC and skill-up programmes for graduates. With regard to the restoration of dignity and standardisation of the National symbol, the council asked state governments to work with NOA state Directors to ensure that FEC approvals are promoted in their states and implemented accordingly. The standardisation policy include: “The third stanza of the National Anthem as National Prayer; The first stanza to be rendered at official/public functions, while the three stanzas of the National Anthem are to be rendered at only special occasions such as Democracy day, National day, inauguration of National Assembly, Armed Forces remembrance day, workers and children's days; Mandate all MDA to source the flag and other ordinance of state power from the NOA” The 48th meeting was attended by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, chairman of the senate committee on Information and National Orientation, Senator Emeka Eze, Chairman of House of Representative Committee on Information, Ethics and Values, Hon. Olusola Fatoba, the Governor of Kaduna state, Senator Uba Sani. This year’s meeting has a theme: Enhancing Public Information Management for Inclusive Governance: Renewed Hope Agenda in Focus. The National Council on Information and National Orientation holds its meetings annually and has as members all state commissioners of information, heads of information agencies at the federal level as members and serves as advisory body on Information and reputational management of Nigeria. |
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), has called for unity and patriotism among Nigerians, emphasizing the critical role of reforms in creating structures that promote positive societal values, as seen in countries like Japan and the United States. It also stressed the need for urgent implementation of reforms to lay the foundation for a more unified and prosperous nation. Director-General of NOA, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, disclosed this in Abuja, during the media Parley with Senior Journalists and the presentation of the 7-7 National Values Charter, he outlined a framework proposed by NOA to address longstanding issues of national unity and patriotism. The National Values Charter includes a dual commitment: one from the government to its citizens, defined in the “Nigerian Promise,” and the other from citizens in the “Citizen Codes.” Issa-Onilu said: “There have been several efforts in this country to promote patriotism and galvanize Nigerians to love their country.” He stressed the need for urgent implementation of reforms to lay the foundation for a more unified and prosperous nation. He added, “We don't have a country where we all see ourselves as brothers and sisters. So all these efforts, something must be missing. And that's what was the crux of my paper, which I submitted. “And I felt two things were missing. First, if you look at all these efforts, they were all targeted at the citizens. Asking citizens to be patriotic, to make sacrifices, to be committed to the country, to love their country. “Without the leadership coming to the table, to spell out their own commitment, it was all about the citizens. And it's got to be said that the citizens will have to ask, what about you, the leaders? So we felt that was missing, that it was only one party that was being challenged. That the burden of patriotism was put squarely on the shoulder of just the citizens. “The second thing that we thought was missing was there were no institutions to even nurture patriotism. When you create values, there must be institutions to nurture values. And they do not exist. “So in the last three decades, we have exposed our children, our youths, to an environment where there are no guidance. Because there are no institutions to nurture them. So it is in the nature of man to seek heroes. So they were looking for heroes. They couldn't find it because we didn't create it for them. We didn't create models for them.” Issa-Onilu also discussed the importance of national identity, highlighting that most countries have clearly defined citizenships. He further elaborated, “For most countries, one can clearly define their citizenship. When you see Americans, Japanese and Chinese, they have their attributes. Even if there are foreign students in the US, they will be taught the American way of Life. “For Nigeria, we can hardly define our citizenships. Why we have failed as a country is because our national identity has not evolved and until we evolve a national identity, we cannot get that unity, that sense of patriotism, that love for the country that we are looking for.” Drawing on the concept of collective identity, Issa-Onilu explained that Nigerians must create a shared identity that transcends tribal and religious lines. “If we have a group identity for Nigeria, anyone not adhering to that identity will see themselves as not being a proper Nigerian. Nobody wants to be seen as not a proper Nigerian." |
The Coalition of Geo-political Youth Associations of Nigeria and Civil Societies, on Tuesday, applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for reappointing Hajiya Fatima Umaru Shinkafi as the Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund/Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Initiative (SMDF/PAGMI).. The coalition urged all stakeholders to support her leadership and called on the National Assembly to provide legislative backing to ensure the Fund achieves its mandate. The coalition's convener, Amb. Olasunkanmi John Kolawole, disclosed this in Abuja, during a press briefing, described the reappointment as a testament to President Tinubu's commitment to excellence and national development. Kolawole praised Hajiya Shinkafi's record of achievements, noting her dedication, leadership, and transformative initiatives in Nigeria's solid minerals sector. Hajiya Shinkafi's accomplishments, which align with the president's Renewed Hope Agenda, include significant reforms in the sector, the operationalization of the Presidential National Gold Purchase Programme, and the development of investment tools and partnerships that have attracted private sector participation and financing for mining projects. Speaking on her notable initiatives, Kolawole said, “Reforms and Transformation: Hajiya Fatima Umaru Shinkafi has been instrumental in driving reforms and transformation in the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, aligning with President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. “Agro-minerals Development Programme: She has developed and executed the Agro-minerals Development Programme to catalyze private sector investment and participation in fertilizer production to enhance food security. “Project Development Facility: She launched a Project Development Facility with the Africa Finance Corporation to unlock development financing for mining projects. “Presidential National Gold Purchase Programme: She operationalized and executed the Presidential National Gold Purchase Programme, which has completed its first commercial transaction. “Investment Strategy and Philosophy: For the first time, the Fund has an investment strategy and philosophy, investing and seeking partnerships through three main funds: SMDF Growth, SMDF Opportunities, and SMDF Responsible Mining. “Repositioning the Fund: She has repositioned the Fund as a Sovereign Mining Development Fund critical to bridging the solid minerals investment gap. “Partnerships and Collaborations: She has established partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Africa Finance Corporation, to unlock development financing for mining projects." The President of the Arewa Youths Forum, Tijan Abdulmumuni, also commended the reappointment, describing it as a recognition of Hajiya Shinkafi's relentless dedication to advancing Nigeria's mining and economic sectors. The reappointment has been celebrated as a progressive step toward the sustainable development of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, with the coalition expressing confidence in Hajiya Shinkafi's ability to deliver transformative results.

The Students’ Wing of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG-SW) has commenced protests in Kano against the proposed Tax Reform Bill by the Federal Government, describing it as a significant threat to education and development in Northern Nigeria. Speaking during the protest, the National Coordinator of CNG-SW, Hassan Adamu, criticized the bill, stating that it would cripple essential educational institutions and initiatives, particularly in the north. He highlighted the adverse impact on organizations like the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), which have been instrumental in supporting education and innovation. He said: “There is a deliberate attempt to narrow the NELFUND coverage in the Northern region as the total number of Federal and State tertiary institutions in the region is more than 96. In Zamfara state for instance only four (4) out of the Ten (10) public tertiary institution were covered Sokoto only 4, “Kano only (4). 13 and so on. Priority was also given to federal institutions with few state-owned institution Tertiary institutions taking advantage of the Student Loan Scheme to increase tuition fees for the 2024/2025 session, will abuse the scheme. The hike of tuition fees with the current economic reality will be a catastrophe to students and the scheme will be perceived as another form of extortion. “The delay in refund can give unpatriotic public servants room to embezzle the money. It is needless to remind us how snakes and other animals were swallowing money years ago. “The pressure of tuition fees payment deadline usually issued by many tertiary institutions have led to the withdrawal of indigent students, missing of academic activities such as examinations in some cases leading to poor academic performance or total forfeiture of their academic pursuit which has led to the increase number of dropouts in northern institutions to up to 60 percent tax, will now receive 20% of the levy in 2025 and 2026 and noting after 2026, according to the proposed Tax Reform Bill. “The implication is that NITDA will not have funds to promote digital inclusion and innovation initiative. It is imperative to state that the Bill will favor NELFUND which will increase access to student loan which will trap our youth in bondage. “NELFUND is currently funded by 1% deduction collected from Taxes, levies, and duties collected by federal inland revenue service (FIRS), it will now receive 25% of the levy in 2025 and 2026, 33% from 2027 to 2029 And 100% by 2030 according to the new Tax Reform Bill. “This implication of this is that, the proposed bill if passed will divert funds critical sector such as infrastructure, innovation initiative with long-time development impact. “It shifts attention to Students loan; this could also give reason for the public Tertiary institutions to increase their tuition fees. It could also make our public Tertiary institutions to be one revenue generation entity, paving way for privatization of our Tertiary institutions thereby making it inaccessible to the masses. “This will also saddle our youth with unsustainable debt burden. This mirror the country's chronical national indebtedness, and as well risk creating a generation of financially constrained youth that are is capable of contributing meaningfully to the economy.” The coalition warned that the proposed reforms could create a generation of indebted youth while undermining educational development in the north. It also condemned any attempt to use the student loan scheme as a justification for privatizing public tertiary institutions, which would make higher education inaccessible to many. The protest is part of CNG-SW's broader advocacy to protect the interests of northern students and ensure that education remains a priority in national policies. He added, “We call on the federal government to discontinue the reform process and give room for a holistic consultation and amendment before legislation. “We call on the northern legislators and Governors to study the Bill adequately in order to come up with a practical way out. “The NELFUND Disbursement in Northern Institutions and Shortcomings The coalition of Northern groups students wing (CNG-SW) as vanguard of the Federal Government Students Loan Scheme, haven participated actively in sensitizing the students, parents and the general public about the Student Loan Scheme (Bill and Act) as well as sensitization and mobilization of students to apply for the loan; have critically studied and analyzed the released of disbursement statistics by National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) across tertiary institutions in the Northern region.” |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has opposed alleged plans to establish a French military base in Nigeria, describing the move as unconstitutional and detrimental to the nation's sovereignty. The CNG also cited France’s controversial role in West Africa, highlighting its alleged involvement in the destabilization of regional stability and exploitation of resources in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi. National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, disclosed this in Abuja, during a press briefing, expressed concern over reported agreements between the Nigerian government and France, allegedly granting the European nation permission to establish a military presence in the country and access to Nigeria’s mineral resources. Charanchi accused the government of undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty and history of Pan-African leadership by entertaining what the group termed as French neo-imperialist ambitions. He said: “It took the collective wisdom and uncommon display of Pan Africanism by some renowned statesmen and millions of concerned citizens, to miraculously quench the incendiary fire ignited by France, in her desperate bid to continue the objectionable subjugation of its rebellious former French speaking colonies in the region, in neocolonial servitude, using Nigeria as a willing tool. “It should also not escape our elephantine memory, that it was this same France that so boisterously spearheaded the stiff resistance of some powerful western nations against the imminent take-off of the West African common currency. “With all these calamitous catalogues of French imperial meddlesomeness in Africa, it beggars’ belief, that our country, Nigeria, which has a rich and proud record of championing the cause of the black people anywhere in the world and an undisputed leader of the African people, could suddenly stoop so low as to be ordered around, in a manner reminiscent of the abhorrent and detestable behavior of conquered people. “We refuse to accept and hereby wish to definitely reaffirm, that, having so sufficiently equipped ourselves with the armory of the above stated indisputable historical facts and in the light of yet another abhorrent reality prevalent. “Especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi where the rich mineral resources of these two great African nations are pitilessly plundered by France in particular, it is our very firm resolve and implacable determination to use all constitutional and democratic means, to militantly resist any attempt by this government, to invite France or any other foreign power, in order to establish a military base in any part of our beloved country. “It is beyond doubt, that the constitution of our dear country has adequate provisions on the laid down procedures that must be strictly adhered to, in handling sensitive matters such as this, but which for reasons best known to this government, it becomes flagrantly convenient for them to ignore and even trample underfoot.” CNG called on the National Assembly to reject any moves that would allow foreign powers to establish military bases in Nigeria. It also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to focus on addressing the pressing insecurity issues in the northern region, including insurgency, banditry, and kidnappings, rather than pursuing policies that might jeopardize national stability. The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to resisting such plans through constitutional and democratic means, vowing to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty at all costs. “The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), is compelled by a deep sense of patriotic duty to use this medium, to strongly protest and alert Nigerians on the contemplated unconstitutional and indefensible action taken recently by the government, in granting alleged permission to France, a belligerent and notorious imperialist power, to establish an expeditionary military base in our dear country. This is also linked with a reported case of bilateral agreement signed between Nigeria and France, giving her unrestricted access to our nation’s huge Mineral resources. “Since the inception of the Bola Ahmad Tinubu’s administration, Nigerians have been witnessing the open and behind the scenes diplomatic manoeuvrings, being deftly orchestrated at the top level of officialdom, with the misleading intention to surrender the supremely precious sovereignty of our dear nation, to France. “We recall with trepidation, that, barely a year following his swearing into the highly coveted presidency of our beloved country, the same bellicose European nation was fingered as being the inveterate promoter and tireless sponsor of the dismemberment of ECOWAS and the then perceptible war atmosphere generated by this subterfuge, that enveloped the hitherto peaceful West African sub-region. “It took the collective wisdom and uncommon display of Pan Africanism by some renowned statesmen and millions of concerned citizens, to miraculously quench the incendiary fire ignited by France, in her desperate bid to continue the objectionable subjugation of its rebellious former French speaking colonies in the region, in neocolonial servitude, using Nigeria as a willing tool. “It should also not escape our elephantine memory, that it was this same France that so boisterously spearheaded the stiff resistance of some powerful western nations against the imminent take-off of the West African common currency. “With all these calamitous catalogues of French imperial meddlesomeness in Africa, it beggars’ belief, that our country, Nigeria, which has a rich and proud record of championing the cause of the black people anywhere in the world and an undisputed leader of the African people, could suddenly stoop so low as to be ordered around, in a manner reminiscent of the abhorrent and detestable behavior of conquered people.”

An Ikwerre socio-cultural group, Ikwerre Youths Progressive Initiative (IYPI), has called on former Governor of Rivers State and Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, to run for President-General of Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo. It would be recalled that the Pan Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohaneze N'Igbo, had slated January 10, 2025, to hold an election, following the demise of the 11th President-General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu. The group's National Leader, Barrister Cosmas Ozinyowe, emphasised that Amaechi's legacy as a transformative leader in Nigeria is already cemented, but destiny calls him to a role that could define the future of over 70 million Igbos at home and in the diaspora. He said: “The position of President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo offers you a unique opportunity to lead with vision, redefine the Igbo identity in Nigeria’s political landscape, and pave the way for a united and prosperous Nigeria. “The Igbo nation needs a leader who can bridge internal divides, amplify their voice on the national stage, and unite their interests. “With his extensive political experience as a two-term Governor, Minister of Transportation, and a political strategist, Amaechi has the credentials to mobilize Igbos at home and abroad toward a shared vision of progress and influence.” Ozinyowe noted that Amaechi's potential candidacy as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is not an end, it is a means to a greater purpose. Ohanaeze also noted that Amaechi would position himself as a unifying figure, capable of healing historical wounds and championing inclusive governance. Ozinyowe added, “The role will allow him to demonstrate the pragmatic, bridge-building leadership that has marked his career. Amaechi's tenure at Ohanaeze would provide the platform to engage deeply with other regional blocs. “As a former Minister, his relationships in the South-South, North, and West remain intact. These alliances can be leveraged to foster national unity through cultural exchanges, regional economic partnerships, and political dialogue.” Ozinyowe emphasised that Amaechi's track record speaks for itself. “As a two-term Governor of Rivers State, he championed infrastructural development, prioritized education, and fostered an environment for economic growth. “As Minister of Transportation, he spearheaded critical projects that connected the nation. These experiences equip him with the tools to lead Ohanaeze into a new era of relevance and impact. “Moreover, Amaechi embodies the Igbo spirit of resilience and adaptability. He has navigated the complexities of Nigerian politics with tact and strength, earning respect across party and regional lines. This is the caliber of leadership Ohanaeze needs a leader who can inspire trust, galvanize support, and command respect on the national stage. “Amaechi's leadership qualities have been demonstrated in his previous roles. Twice, he led the groundbreaking campaigns to elect and re-elect an APC president, forever changing the political narrative of the nation. Under his stewardship, he achieved what no campaign had done since Nigeria's inception unseating an incumbent president through democratic elections. That singular feat has enshrined him as a political change maker, a strategist capable of uniting diverse interests and delivering results against the odds. “By running for President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, you will not only unite the Igbos but also position yourself as a national figure ready to lead Nigeria.” Ozinyowe said. The position offers the platform to craft a narrative of inclusion, progress, and unity that transcends ethnic lines. He noted that with accordance with Article 11 it's constitution, the position of President-General is supposed to be rotated amongst the seven member states, namely: Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, Igbo-speaking areas of Rivers and Delta States. |
The Coalition of Northern Groups Students Wing (CNG-SW), has expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), disbursement process, citing regional disparities and delays that adversely impact students in Northern Nigeria. The coalition urged the federal government to discontinue the reform process and allow for a holistic consultation to address its potential to undermine institutions like the TETFund and overburden students with loans. In a statement by the group's National Coordinator, Hassan Adamu, called on the federal government to immediately address these issues and revisit the proposed Tax Reform Bill to ensure the protection of educational institutions and students nationwide. The group also called on legislators and citizens to study the bill critically and advocate for justice in the education sector. He said: “We call on the federal government for the interest of Nigerian Students to discontinue the reform process and give room for a holistic consultation and amendment before legislation. “We call on all patriotic legislators and all well meaning Nigerians to study the Bill with a keen interest and ensure justice to our educational institutions and Nigerian students. “The NELFUND disbursement in Northern Institutions and Shortcomings The coalition of Northern groups students wing (CNG-SW) as vanguard of the Federal Government Students Loan Scheme, haven participated actively in sensitizing the students. “Parents and the general public about the Student Loan Scheme (Bill and Act) as well as sensitization and mobilization of students to apply for the loan; have critically studied and analysed the released of disbursement statistics by National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) across tertiary institutions in the Northern region. “From the disbursement statistics over eighty-two thousand nine hundred and fifty-one (82,951) students across Forty-Five (45) institutions benefited from the region. It is imperative to clarify that out of the Two-Hundred and thirty-four (234) Federal and State tertiary institutions cleared by NELFUND for the first Phase only Ninety-six (96) were from the north; with Fifty-one (51) tertiary institutions yet to receive disbursement.” The coalition emphasized that the federal government must take immediate action to rectify these issues to ensure equitable access to education for all students. Failure to do so, they warned, risks deepening educational disparities and further eroding the nation's academic system. He added, “While some institutions have refunded tuition fees paid by beneficiaries before disbursement to them, some are refunding certain percentage others are yet to commence the refund. Some beneficiaries have variation on the amount of loans disbursed to them and the amount payable as school fees leaving. The delay in disbursement and tuition fees payment pressure by Tertiary institution on beneficiaries. “There is a deliberate attempt to narrow the NELFUND coverage in the Northern region as the total number of Federal and State tertiary institutions in the region is more than 96. In Zamfara state for instance only four (4) out of the Ten (10) public tertiary institutions were covered, Sokoto only 4, Kano only (4). 13 and so on. “Priority was also given to federal institutions with few state-owned institution Tertiary institutions taking advantage of the Student Loan Scheme to increase tuition fees for the 2024/2025 session, will abuse the scheme. The hike of tuition fees with the current economic reality will be a catastrophe to students and the scheme will be perceived as another form of extortion. “The delay in refund can give unpatriotic public servants room to embezzle the money. It is needless to remind us how snake and other animals were swallowing money years ago. “The pressure of tuition fees payment deadline usually issued by many tertiary institutions have led to the withdrawal of indigent students, missing of academic activities such as examinations in some cases leading to poor academic performance or total forfeiture of their academic pursuit which has led to the increase number of drop out in northern institutions to up to 60 percent.” They also call on NELFUND to expand their coverage as the total number of Federal and State tertiary institutions in the region are more than 96 institutions. This is to ensure access for all students. The Coalition said that NELFUND should ensure early disbursement to institutions to avoid pressure on beneficiaries by management. The coalition also criticized the Tax Reform Bill, describing it as a "deliberate attempt to attack critical national institutions" like TETFund, which have supported educational development. They warned that the reforms would deteriorate these institutions, leaving tertiary education infrastructure in disrepair. "The reform will have a devastating effect on critical institutions that support educational development in the country," the statement read. The CNG-SW called on the federal government and legislators to act swiftly, emphasizing that failure to address these issues would deepen educational inequalities and further erode the academic system in Northern Nigeria. The Coalition of Northern Groups Students-Wing reject in totality the proposed TAX Reform Bill that is designed by the enemies of the state to undermine our already paralysed educational sector. As a matter of fact the bill is designed to undermine our existing educational institutions and equally ensure that anything good in the sector becomes a history, which Nigerian students will vehemently resist no matter what. The reform will have a deteriorating effect on critical Institutions that has support the educational development in the country. We see the Tax Reform Bill as a deliberate attempt to attack our critical National Institutions that are responsible for basic infrastructure in Tertiary institutions, thereby ensuring that the institutions become a mortuary. The contributions of this single institution since its inception can not and will not be over emphasised having played a pivotal role in financing researches, physical infrastructure, Staff training and development, TETFUND which is currently funded through 3% of Tertiary Education tax on companies annual accessible profit; will now receive 50% of the levy by 2025 and 2026 it will increase to 66% from 2027 to 2029 be for diminishing to 3%, according to the proposed Tax Reform Bill. TETFund will not have any allocation by 2023 which by implication will lead TETFund to extinction, a situation which is tantamount to degrading the Tertiary Education system in Nigeria. It is imperative to state that the Bill will favour NELFUND with its long-term negative consequences which will increase access to student loans which will trap our youth in bondage and possibly turn the institutions into revenue generating agencies. NELFUND is currently funded by 1% deduction collected from Taxes, levies, and duties collected by federal inland revenue service (FIRS), it will now receive 25% of the levy in 2025 and 2026, 33% from 2027 to 2029 And 100% by 2030 according to the new Tax Reform Bill. The implication of this is that, the proposed bill if passed will divert funds to critical sectors such as infrastructure, innovation initiatives with long-time development impact. It shifts attention to Students loan, this could also give reason for the public Tertiary institutions to increase their tuition fees. It could also make our public Tertiary institutions to be one revenue generating entity, paving way for privatization of our Tertiary institutions there by making it inaccessible to the masses. This will also saddle our youth with unsustainable debt burden. This mirrors the country's chronical national indebtedness, and as well risks creating a generation of financially constrained youth that are capable of contributing meaningfully to our economy. Passionate Appeal. |
The Northern Elders' Forum (NEF), has rejection of the Tax Reform Bill, calling it a policy “conceived in bad faith” and warning that it threatens national cohesion. The group criticized the manner of its implementation, alleging that key stakeholders, including members of the National Economic Council, were sidelined during the process. Convener of NEF, Professor Ango AbdullahI, in a communique after the forum Board of Trustees second bi-annual meeting, in Abuja, warned against dubious policies that could further marginalize the North’s resource potential. The Forum lauded the Northern States Governors’ Forum and the Northern Nigeria Council of Traditional Rulers for opposing the bill, dubbing their stance “patriotic” while urging Northern politicians in the National Assembly to speak out against it. He said: “The meeting seriously maintained that, in its present form, the Tax Reform Bill is conceived in bad faith, poorly packaged and it is a palpable threat to our unity and national cohesion. “The Meeting proceeded by drawing attention to the brazen cavalier way and suspicious manner in which the Tax Reform Bill was imposed on the nation, without allowing the in-puts of critical stakeholders, even as it kept members of the National Economic Council in the dark, thus; confirming the sinister intentions of those promoting this outrageous Bill. “The Board-in-session, condemned in very strong terms, the conspicuous loss of voice on this burning issue by the overwhelming number of elected politicians in the National Assembly from the region, and fiercely warned, that indeed, the days are fast gone, when such conspiratorial connivance against the vital and strategic interest of the region, either by those within or outside the region, would be condoned or even tolerated “In consideration of the deteriorating situation in the education sector in the country in general and the North in particular, the Board-in-Session was alarmed by the high percentage, now about (60%) of students in Northern Nigeria, who involuntarily were not able to return to their institutions of higher learning, universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and legal studies, due to high costs of tuition fees and unaffordable daily transportation to and from schools. “The Meeting went on to discuss the explosive crisis of out of school children now estimated to be 20 million in the whole country, of which over 80% comes from the North. Against this troubling reality, the Board-in-session expressed serious doubt, on the viability and efficacy of the much touted Federal Students Loan Scheme as a panacea to this malignant malady. “The Board-in-session, unanimously frowned at the surreptitious move being masterminded by the Ministry of Mines and Solid Minerals to sponsor dubious mining policies in collusion with certain political actors, with the sole aim of stifling the investment opportunities of the huge mineral resource potentials linked to the vast Northern region. “The Meeting spiritedly decried the prevalence of condescending attitude being exhibited by some powerful political actors in the region, who more often than not, behave arrogantly and disdainfully like rulers rather than leaders fully committed to the plight of their people. “The Board-in-session, urgently called on the people of the North to stay resolute and remain vigilant in defence of their inalienable rights, particularly their voting rights and to desist from allowing themselves to be deceived yet again, through subterfuge, use of ill-gotten wealth and religious manipulation, by some unscrupulous elements, whose past records did not portray them to be persons of integrity, character and probity.” The NEF urged Northerners to remain vigilant in defending their rights, particularly during elections, and warned against falling victim to manipulation by unscrupulous leaders with questionable records. The group emphasized the importance of safeguarding unity and resisting attempts to divide the region. |
The Lagos State Government and social protection stakeholders have called for strengthened partnerships to ensure vulnerable groups benefit from its social intervention programmes. Recently, the Lagos State Government took the campaign for its social protection programmes to residents across five divisions in Ikorodu, Badagary, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe (IBILE). The campaign was executed by the Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget in collaboration with Socio-Functional MDAs and UNICEF. George said Lagos has more than 90 social intervention programmes catering to various needs of its residents in the area of feeding and family welfare, healthcare, women and youth empowerment, business grants, education, and many others. “This is to ensure that we are unified by a common goal that no one is left behind,” he said. “This is to uplift the most vulnerable and marginalized among us. "Together, we will make a lasting impact in the lives of our people and build a future where every citizen can thrive and achieve inclusive economic growth.” The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Cecilia Bolaji Dada, said the government has empowered artisans whose profiles were sourced from the State Single Social Register and trained women and youths in life-sustaining skills. Similarly, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Bolaji Ogunlende, noted that the Ministry continues to deliver youth-centered programmes to ensure that Lagos youths are self-reliant and would do more going forward. The Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, disclosed that the ministry recently empowered youths through the Graduate Internship Placement Programme (GIPP) with several other initiatives in the pipeline. Presenting an overview of social protection programmes, the Director of the Social Protection Coordinating Department, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Oluwakemi Gabadeen Adedeji, disclosed that the Lagos State Single Social Register would be updated to ensure transparency in implementing the social interventions programme. Meanwhile, residents across the five divisions have commended the government for the social protection programmes, describing them as “life savers” in a time of economic hardship in Lagos State. In Epe, a trader identified as Sherifat said the grant received was the major reason she is still in business. In Ikorodu, an artisan named Adewale said the social protection programmes have come in handy for him and his family, specifically the ‘Ounje Eko’ initiative. A mother of four in Ikeja said the ‘Ilera Eko’ health scheme has helped her family get good healthcare without breaking the bank. A beneficiary of the state’s youth empowerment programme, Benjamin, a resident of Lagos Island, said the government’s initiative empowered him with a tech skill where he foresees a bright future ahead. Attendees of the campaign in Badagary commended the ‘Ounje Eko’ initiative and called for its extension in more markets in the local government. |
The House of Representative Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values was at the National Orientation Agency today on an oversight visit, to evaluate the 2024 fiscal performance and prepare for the 2025 budget. It was also an opportunity for the committee led by Honourable Steve Fatoba to praise the several initiatives of the Agency since the assumption of duty of the Director General, Mallam Lanre IssaOnilu, saying the agency has made improvements in the last one year. The committee was briefed by the DG on financial, human resource and programmes of the Agency and efforts being made to institutionalise national values and attitudinal change through the National Identity projects already approved by the Federal Executive Council. NOA, in a statement by his Deputy Director of Press, Paul Odenyi, explained that the task of communicating government programmes and policies remains enormous, requiring the involvement of all stakeholders to succeed. For him, the Tinubu Government has shown commitment in driving attitudinal change and has continually supported the Agency through approval of its proposals geared towards nation building. The committee chairman, Hon. Fatoba, in his remarks said the committee would support the Agency substantially to achieve its mandate especially now that the government is serious about promoting attitudinal change. He reiterated the commitment of the House of Representatives to supporting the Agency’s activities and programmes, to enhance public understanding and awareness of government activities especially at the grassroots. Some members of the committee asked questions about the dwindling staff strength, accommodation for state and local government offices and the need to increase the visibility of the Agency among Nigerians. After the meeting, members were taken round the Agency’s new communication facilities including newsroom, Television studio, radio and editing suites. These facilities have enhanced the Agency’s capacity to produce its own jingles, and other messages. |
The Nigeria Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Council (NENYLC), has called for the immediate removal of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (NNPCL) Group Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Mele Kyari, accusing him of negligence in addressing refinery operations and rising fuel costs, which the group claims have placed an unsustainable burden on citizens. It could be recalled that despite the price of petrol coming down in the international market, the NNPCL has increased the price of the product several times within the last one year. The group, in a statement signed by their President General, Comrade Terry Obieh and Organizing Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Zopmal, said, “The current high cost of petrol is impacting every aspect of Nigerian society, leading to increased transportation fares, inflated food prices, and escalated costs of basic goods and services.” Worried by the development and its effect on Nigerians, the NENYLC in a statement made available to journalists demanded the immediate sack of the GMD/CEO of the NNPCL, Mr. Mele Kyari. The group said Kyari had failed to alleviate the financial strain being imposed on citizens due to soaring fuel costs. They expressed deep concern over the rising pump prices of petrol imposed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), a development it said has continued to exacerbate the economic hardships faced by millions of Nigerians. The statement read: “These hardships disproportionately affect Nigeria’s youth, students, low-income earners, and vulnerable groups, further widening the economic gap and stalling progress for the nation's development. “We have stated our position clearly that the unrelenting rise in pump prices has placed an unbearable burden on Nigerians. Many families are struggling to make ends meet, businesses are at risk of closure, and the cost of living is pushing more Nigerians below the poverty line. This is unacceptable in a country endowed with abundant natural resources.” The NENYLC urged the Federal Government to adopt policies ensuring affordable and accessible fuel for all Nigerians, “While doing that, we also strongly suggest an immediate review of the pricing structure, subsidies, and efficient management practices, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and prioritizing the welfare of citizens. “Additionally, we advocate for alternative energy investments to diversify Nigeria’s energy landscape and reduce reliance on costly fossil fuels. Ensuring that Nigerians have access to affordable fuel is not just an economic obligation, it’s a matter of social justice and national stability. “We call on the Federal Government to prioritize the welfare of citizens over profit margins and to take concrete steps towards reducing the pump prices to the barest minimum. It is imperative for the stability, unity, and prosperity of our nation.” The Nigeria Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Council restated its commitment to advocating for the interests of all ethnic nationalities across the country, vowing that it would continue “to hold public institutions accountable in safeguarding the well-being and prosperity of all Nigerians.” |
The Northern Awareness Network (NAN), has backed the Defence Minister Bello Mohammed Matawalle, condemning recent protests allegedly orchestrated by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the name of an unrecognized group, “ the All Progressives Congress (APC) Akida." NAN said that the protests, staged by discontented factions within Zamfara State, are part of a politically motivated campaign aimed at undermining both the Defence Minister and the federal government's strides against insecurity in the region. The Chairman of NAN, Salihu Sulaiman, in a statement, argued that the protests are problematic due to their ulterior motives disguised as grassroots movements. NAN criticized the protests, describing them as lacking authenticity and calling "APC Akida" a phantom entity with no clear mandate or representation. Sulaiman said: “These protests, which have been sponsored by discontented elements within the Zamfara State political landscape, are not only an affront to the integrity of our democratic processes but also an attempt to undermine the significant strides made by the federal government in addressing the pervasive issue of insecurity in our region. “The recent protests, characterized by their politically charged rhetoric, have raised questions about the motivations behind such demonstrations. While dissent is a fundamental aspect of democracy, it becomes problematic when it is driven by ulterior motives, cloaked in the guise of grassroots movements. “The APC Akida, a name that has surfaced in the political arena, appears to be a phantom entity, lacking a clear mandate or representation. This raises concerns about the authenticity of the protests and the intentions of those orchestrating them. “The Defence Minister has been a pivotal figure in the ongoing efforts to ensure national security and stability, particularly in the northern regions of Nigeria, where challenges abound. “We wish to remind Governor Dauda Lawal that his actions will not go unnoticed. In the fullness of time, he will be called to account for his numerous distractive antics that serve only to hinder the commendable efforts of the federal government and the gallant troops led by Minister Matawalle. “It is imperative to recognize that these antics are not merely political posturing; they represent a dangerous diversion that threatens the stability and security of our beloved region and country.” They commended Minister Matawalle for his leadership in these security initiatives and acknowledged the significant support from international allies, whose contributions have reinforced the national fight against insecurity. The Northern Awareness Network commends the unwavering commitment and sacrifices of our federal troops, whose bravery has been instrumental in the fight against insecurity. We acknowledge the strong will of President Tinubu, whose leadership has fostered a renewed spirit of cooperation among various security agencies. The collaborative efforts between these agencies, significantly enhanced by Minister Matawalle, have yielded tangible results in the ongoing battle against the forces that seek to destabilize our communities. Moreover, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to Nigeria's friends across the globe who have lent their support in this critical fight against insecurity. Their contributions have been invaluable, reinforcing our collective resolve to restore peace and security to our nation. It is through such partnerships that we can fortify our efforts and emerge victorious in this protracted struggle. As we navigate the complexities of our current security landscape, we urge Minister Matawalle and our security forces to remain vigilant against emerging threats, particularly the rising menace of Lakurawa. This evolving challenge demands a robust and strategic response, grounded in the rule of law and an unwavering commitment to their obligations as custodians of peace. It is crucial that their approach to combating these threats is not only decisive but also considerate of the principles of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration, which are essential for achieving lasting peace in the region. Victory in this context will not be defined solely by the defeat of adversaries but rather by the comprehensive cessation of hostilities and the restoration of normalcy in our communities. We must strive for a future where all citizens can live free from fear, where families can thrive, and where the spirit of unity prevails over division. The Northern Awareness Network reaffirms its unwavering support for Defence Minister Bello Mohammed Matawalle. We call upon all stakeholders to unite in this critical fight against insecurity, to rise above political machinations, and to work collaboratively towards a safer and more prosperous Nigeria. |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has issued a strong warning about the emergence of a new terror group, Lakurawa, reportedly active in the Sokoto-Kebbi axis in northwestern Nigeria. CNG also urged a unified response from all stakeholders, including local, state, and federal authorities, as well as communities, religious and traditional leaders, to confront the growing threat. CNG National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, in a statement, expressed deep concern about reports of Lakurawa's activities, which mirror the tactics of other violent groups that have terrorized the region The CNG confirmed that this group has already begun creating an atmosphere of fear, disrupting local communities, and killing lives and livelihoods of the residents. He said: “The emergence of this group is particularly concerning given the historical and ongoing security challenges the northern region faces, including banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping. “We reliably gathered that they give monetary incentives to youths in rural communities in Sokoto for the purpose of recruiting an army of youths into their fold. “We urge the federal government, security agencies, state and local government authorities to take decisive and proactive measures to address this threat while it is still in its infancy. “The CNG strongly calls on the federal government to significantly raise the number of troops currently combating the insecurity in the Northwest subregion as their current figure of about 13,000 is not just inadequate but also stretches their power and will to thoroughly eliminate the terrorists destroying the region. “Regrettably, this insufficiency of combatants on ground in the frontline states had resulted in resurgence of attacks and killings in many LGAs across the three states such as Tsafe, Gusau, Funtua, Jibia and Sokoto among others. “The CNG, therefore, recommends that at least 40,000 fully combatant troops be deployed to the Northwest which will be complemented by the local community security watch to confront the challenge head-on. “The CNG suggests that an immediate, well-coordinated response across all levels of government is imperative to prevent Lakurawa from gaining further strength and territorial control.” CNG also urges the federal government and security agencies to deploy advanced intelligence and tactical operations to monitor and dismantle Lakurawa's network before it can expand further. They emphasized the importance of community support, encouraging local leaders and residents to report any suspicious activities to authorities, as their cooperation is critical in gathering actionable intelligence. They extends its heartfelt condolences to the government and good people of Kebbi State over the killing of 15 persons in Augie local government area of the state in such a despicable manner. We pray that may Allah rest their souls and hasten the healing of the wounded. Ggg added, “We are privy of the efforts of the State governor in addressing insecurity in the state. With this new challenge, the CNG calls on Governor Nasir Idris to remain resolute and not get distracted in his commitment to securing his people. “The CNG implores Kebbi to adopt strategies of engaging Community Watch Corps to complement the conventional security forces that its neighbours such as Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara have adopted to ensure a more robust and coordinated approach in addressing the common threat. “In the same vein, the CNG also appeals to the residents and communities of Kebbi, Sokoto, and neighboring states to cooperate closely with security forces. This is because community support is vital in gathering information, identifying suspicious activities, and helping security agencies in their operations. “We encourage local leaders and residents to prioritize collective security by reporting unusual activities to the appropriate authorities and supporting all efforts to restore peace and stability. The CNG reiterates that all hands must be on deck to nip these new terror gangs in the bud to protect our communities and secure our region." |
A group under the auspices of Tinubu Arewa Media 2023, led by Comrade Abdulhamid Bala, has issued resounding condemnation of the baseless allegations circulating against the Minister of Defence, Muhammadu Badaru, by persons it described as certain meddlesome individuals. The group, which has been in the forefront of the campaign for the victory of President Bola Tinubu, described the media attack on the Minister as unfounded and totally unacceptable. The group said in a terse media release on Tuesday, said, “These shameless falsehoods, accusing Minister Badaru of an imaginary shadow romance with PDP figures, are nothing but lies from the pit of hell, concocted by those desperate to destabilize the APC and disrupt the unity we have worked hard to build. “Comrade Bala denounced the allegations against the Minister as a deliberate, malicious campaign of calumny. “These detractors are attempting to weaken our party’s stronghold by tarnishing the image of a man who has devoted himself to the APC and to our nation’s progress," Said Bala He explained that, “The claims linking Minister Badaru to an opposition plot are the height of absurdity and betrayal, grounded in fiction rather than fact. Those fueling these rumors are simply enemies of progress with no respect for truth or integrity.” The group insisted that Minister Badaru’s unshakable dedication to the APC, both as a former governor and now as Minister of Defence, is indisputable. It noted that Badaru's leadership has consistently embodied the values of the APC, advancing the interests of Jigawa State and Nigeria as a whole. The group further stated that Badaru's allegiance to the party and unwavering support for President Tinubu’s administration cannot be questioned, as his record of service speaks volumes. The group called on all APC loyalists and President Tinubu to disregard these pathetic, unfounded rumors intended to distract from the party's goals. “These smear campaigns are orchestrated by agents of division and deceit," Bala continued, "They may try to stir up trouble, but they will find no footing within the APC. Minister Badaru remains an honorable figure of loyalty, courage, and competence.” The group declared that it stands firmly with Minister Badaru and condemns "the reckless tactics of those attempting to undermine his legacy and loyalty. “We remain united against these disgraceful, fabricated attacks, which only highlight the desperation of those who fear the strength and resilience of the APC in Jigawa State and beyond. No level of slander will distract us from supporting our leaders and pursuing our mission for a stronger, united Nigeria", they emphasized. The group further disclosed that it is well aware of the politician behind this smear campaign against Minister Badaru. “This same politician, notorious for his intolerance, previously resorted to similar tactics in dealings with a Mining business partner. We therefore issue our final warning: if this individual dares to target Minister Badaru with such deceitful antics again, the group will not hesitate to expose his full identity to the public, through the media," it threatened. |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has condemned the detention of numerous Nigerian minors, many under the age of 18, who were held in custody for over 90 days before their recent arraignment in an Abuja High Court. It would be recalled that the minors were detained for participating in protests against hunger and poor governance, exercising what CNG describes as their constitutional rights. The National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, in a statement, said that the detention and arraignment of those frail, malnourished and hapless children have exposed the government as a desperate entity that is determined to de-market and embarrass Nigeria before the international community while presenting its credentials for medals in gross inhumanity. CNG’s National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, in a statement condemning the situation, describing it as evidence of the government’s desperation and indifference to the wellbeing of vulnerable young citizens, exposing Nigeria to international criticism. Charanchi said: “The continued detention and mistreatment of these minors is a gross violation of their basic rights, including the right to freedom of expression and assembly. CNG strongly condemns this abuse of power and the blatant disregard for the welfare and dignity of young citizens. “The treatment these children are receiving highlights a troubling failure of state actors to prioritize the welfare and rights of its most vulnerable citizens, children, especially when their “crime” was to demand better governance and accountability. “It is disheartening that in a country with a history of resilience and promise, minors are being made to endure starvation and harsh conditions while awaiting trial for daring to speak up for their future. This is not only a violation of domestic law but also contravenes international human rights principles protecting children from harm and unlawful detention. “Ideally, those children are supposed to be treated first as victims of state abuse and deprivation whose leaders have failed to provide the necessary leadership that can mold them into better members of the society as they are a direct outcome of our decayed system. He argued that instead of addressing these issues or providing relief, the government appears focused on detaining and punishing minors who represent the country's future. He added, “It is shamefully despicable that criminals and bandits that are holding the entire country to ransom do not face such stringent consequences for their actions. “Evidently, the Government has consistently proven that people’s problems and deteriorating situations are not part of its priority because of its disregard for the daily hardships of its citizens. Increasingly, frequent blackouts have become a norm across the country, severely impacting homes, businesses, and essential services which became worse with the recent blackout. “The elimination of fuel subsidies and constant raising of fuel prices have pushed the cost of living to record highs, making basic necessities even harder to afford. Instead of prioritizing the welfare of the populace by providing feasible alternatives or relief, the government’s priorities appear to be detaining, abusing and crushing the vulnerable children that need support and protection to grow into responsible adults.” The Coalition has called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained minors, and urges the government to engage in dialogue and constructive engagement rather than intimidation, particularly with young citizens. Additionally, CNG appeals to relevant agencies and civil society organizations to provide urgent humanitarian support to the detained children to prevent further health deterioration. “Unfortunately, hunger and starvation have become weapons against defenseless and malnourished teenagers. It is clear that the government’s neglect of essential services and its catastrophic economic policies have strangulated millions in a state of uncertainty, desperation, and disillusionment in which these minors belong. “These children must not be targeted as the scapegoat for expressing their frustrations as Nigerians have never gone through such dehumanizing and cruel policies that this administration promotes.” The CNG calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all minors detained for participating in the protests. We demand that the government prioritize dialogue and constructive engagement over intimidation, especially with young citizens who represent the future of this nation. In the interim, we urge relevant agencies and civil society organizations to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to these detained children to mitigate further health risks. The protection of children is non-negotiable, and we implore the authorities to treat these young citizens with the compassion and respect they deserve. |
The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), has launched a high-quality, locally-produced engine oil on Friday, designed for vehicles running on petrol, diesel, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The firm also said the innovation would mark a significant step towards reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported lubricants, while offering a cost-effective solution amidst fuel price hikes. The RTEAN President, Dr. Musa Maitakobi, speaking at the launch event held in partnership with Equatorial Petroleum Coastal and Process Limited in Abuja, noted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s push to transition from petrol to CNG-powered vehicles. Maitakobi was represented by RTEAN Deputy President Of Administration, Muhammad Bishara, who highlighted that this locally branded engine oil supports local manufacturing and aims to create employment opportunities for Nigerian youth, especially within the transport sector. He said that the move would also promote local manufacturing and create employment opportunities for RTEAN members and the Nigerian youth. He said: “We control the economy of the country, transporting goods and services from different parts of the country. So rather than patronising other people’s products, we decided to have our own. “The RTEAN Branded engine oil is not just a product but represents the unwavering commitment of members to quality and performance. It is designed and crafted with the latest technology, backed by rigorous testing and engineered to surpass industry standards.” According to the RTEAN boss, the oil is built to protect engines, enhance performance, and contribute to a more sustainable future for CNG vehicles. “As we unveil this product today, we celebrate the values that unite us-integrity, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. “I am confident that it will be a game-changer in the market, especially in the greener energy age as it not only meets the needs of our customers, but also reflects our vision of a greener, more efficient world.” In his remarks, Dr Abdulrasheed Yerima, Chief Executive Officer of Equatorial Petroleum Coastal and Process Limited, restated the importance of quality oil for CNG, and other vehicles in Nigeria. Yerima said: “Most engine oils are not optimized for CNG engines, making this development essential for the evolving transport sector. “The oil, priced at N4,700 per liter and N18,000 for a four-liter container, is positioned to be affordable while maintaining high quality. “Our partnership with the transport sector leaders will allow us to offer this product at a competitive price, benefiting both operators and consumers. “In addition to enhancing vehicle performance, the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s push towards greener energy solutions, contributing to reduced carbon emissions from transport activities.” He said that the product would be available in all RTEAN parks across the country, allowing easy access for transport operators and promoting the use of locally made lubricants.

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has expressed deep concern over the ongoing power outages that have affected large parts of Northern Nigeria for the past five days. The coalition is calling on the Federal Government, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), northern governors, lawmakers, and relevant stakeholders to expedite efforts to restore power to the region. The National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, in a statement, stressed the need for increased investment in Northern Nigeria’s power infrastructure, warning that the current neglect will continue to stifle development in the region. The coalition emphasizes a significant infrastructural gap, noting that the North West and North East lack adequate transmission capacity. Charanchi said: “This unprecedented blackout has thrown millions of households into darkness, crippled businesses, and worsened the already dire economic situation in the region. “CNG reliably gathers that patients are already dying at various hospitals due to unavailability of the hospitals to supply alternative means of power to utilize Oxygens to save lives of the patients in severe and critical conditions. “Preliminary findings by the CNG indicate that this outage is the direct result of vandalism on the second Shiroro power line, which feeds the crucial Kaduna Station that distributes to other states in the North. We learnt too that the first other line has been faulty for months. Yet, no effort to fix it could have saved the current avoidable situation. “We are particularly disheartened to learn that two towers along this line have not received serious attention at the beginning of the problem to promptly restore power. “Furthermore, the only alternative source of supply, the Jos line, has repeatedly tripped, which the TCN currently said is working to fix, but cannot bring about a lasting solution. The current state of affairs is not just unacceptable but deeply alarming.” He demands immediate action, calling for a comprehensive review of the electricity distribution framework to ensure fair and equitable access across Nigeria. The CNG also points to a glaring power allocation imbalance, with the North receiving only a fraction of available electricity compared to other regions. He added, “We also demand a comprehensive review of the current electricity distribution framework to ensure fair and equitable access to power across all regions of the country. “We call on the FG, TCN, and Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to explain the rationale behind this lopsided allocation, given that the North is home to most of Nigeria’s hydropower stations. It is incomprehensible that the North is left with a minimal share of national power, especially considering the region’s critical role in the country’s power generation infrastructure.” The CNG calls for increased investment in Northern Nigeria’s power infrastructure, especially in distribution. The current situation glaringly shows that the North has been left behind for too long, with insufficient electricity to meet the needs of its people and economy. We will not stand idly by while the region is further marginalized. “Recall that the CNG had in 2022 faulted the then Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for proposed sales of some power plants that were being held by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) for country. Meanwhile, the funds used in the establishment of the power plants included contributions from all states and local governments from the North with the agreement of replicating similar power plants development in the North. “The CNG reminds northern governors that they it is high time they demand their due share from such investment to obtain the needed resources to build independent power projects in their states; otherwise, they have to pressurize the federal government to mobilise resources from its coffers and that of all other states to establish other power plants just like it did with the plants that had been earlier established in the South. “The CNG, which consistently challenged the Government on its failure to honour the agreement of developing similar infrastructure in the North, has been vindicated with the consequences that has just started to manifest in the current complete blackout which will continue to haunt the entire northern Nigeria and stifle its development efforts for may years to come unless it is tackled head on and instantly. “Hence, the CNG, as a matter of priority, charges the northern governors, senators, house of representative members to eschew their differences and work together and demand a fair investment in power plants in the North because their resources had been utilized for power plants development in the south. “The time has come for decisive action. We urge the Government to not only restore electricity immediately but also to prioritize the North in power projects and infrastructural development plans. Anything less would be a betrayal of the region’s right to equitable development and fairness in national power resource allocation, which is totally unacceptable. “The CNG reminds state governments, lawmakers and other political elite from the North of the need to take up this matter with the President directly and collectively as a matter of immediate and grave concern." |
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), issued a stern warning to the federal government regarding the recent tanker explosion in Jigawa State, which tragically resulted in over 150 deaths and numerous injuries. The coalition also extended its deepest condolences to the government and the entire people of Jigawa State particularly Taura LGA over the devastating tanker explosion. In a statement, the National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, described the incident as a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the significant challenges facing the nation. Charanchi said: “In this time of immense grief, our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and we ask Almighty Allah to grant them strength and comfort during these trying times. “We also pray for the quick and complete healing of those who are injured, asking Allah (SWT) to grant them swift recovery and relieve their suffering. “The CNG stands in solidarity with the people of Jigawa State and urges the federal and state governments, as well as relevant authorities, to take immediate steps to prevent such tragedies in the future. “We call for urgent action to address the root causes of such accidents, particularly the poor state of infrastructure, and the enforcement of strict safety regulations in the transportation of hazardous materials such as petroleum products.” CNG urged the government to prioritize policies that enhance road safety, healthcare, and emergency response capabilities. The coalition added, “We also appeal to the government to prioritize policies that alleviate the suffering of the people, focusing on improved road safety, healthcare systems, and rapid response capabilities during emergencies. “It is imperative that every Nigerian, regardless of their location, feels secure and assured that their lives are valued and protected by the state. “As a nation, we must come together to ensure that tragedies like this become a thing of the past. We continue to pray to Almighty Allah to shield our communities from future disasters. “The CNG reminds governments at all levels particularly the Federal Government to review their policies that are making life extremely difficult for the people so that tragedies such as this could not continue to occur as many victims reportedly saw the spilling fuel as a means of getting respite to their difficult situation." The CNG prayed for the eternal rest of the departed and for protection against future disasters, calling for unity in ensuring that such tragedies are not repeated.

The Millard Fuller Foundation in partnership with stakeholders, has hosted its annual National Day Build in Luvu-Madaki Community in Masaka, Nasarawa State. Partners, friends, and stakeholders gathered for the event which provided a chance for stakeholders to work with and meet beneficiaries of the very affordable housing units developed by the Foundation, in collaboration with the Fuller Center for Housing and a US-based family, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Thompson. The event also allowed for interaction and support as participants helped the beneficiaries put finishing touches to parts of their new homes. The foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Sam Odia, emphasized the Foundation’s commitment to providing sustainable homes for low-income earners in Nigeria. He recalled that since its inception in 2006, the Foundation has built more than a thousand homes with the support of its international partners. Odia explained that the three ‘double’ units comprising two semi-detached 2-bedroom apartments and a stand-alone 2-bedroom apartment included a bathroom and kitchen. Odia said: “Every low-income earner in Nigeria deserves a place to rest their head after a hard day’s work. While we may not be able to provide homes for all, we will continue doing our best to help as many as we can.” One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Evelyn Itodo, expressed her excitement at becoming a homeowner. She said, “I never imagined a day would come when I would own my own home. I am grateful to God and to the Millard Fuller Foundation for this opportunity.” Another beneficiary, Pastor Napoleon Ocheja, a civil servant and father of two, thanked the Foundation for giving him the chance to own a home. “This scheme has saved my family and me from landlord harassment and has given us the comfort of homeownership.” he said. The third beneficiary, Mr. Isa Dogo-Moni, a state government civil servant, noted how difficult it had been for him to support his family, let alone build a home. “My meagre salary could barely cover my family’s needs, let alone a building project. But after my encounter with the Millard Fuller Foundation, my perception of homeownership changed. I am grateful to the Foundation for this opportunity,” he said Since its inception in 2006, the Millard Fuller Foundation has worked with local and international partners to provide homes for low-income earners.

Technology was what we used in changing the trend by blocking leakages in the system. I am happy to say that as of today our IGR has grown to N1.3 billion.” He said with the use of efficient technologies the state was able to block revenue leakages.

The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has directed the Agency’s Community Orientation Officers to immediately commence a massive sensitisation campaign in communities likely to be affected by the release of excess water from the Lagdo Dam. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has indicated that the Nigerian government has been notified by Cameroonian authorities that it will soon release excess water from the dam, urging Nigeria to take precautionary measures to prevent damage to property and loss of life. Recognising the urgency, the Director General instructed state directorates, particularly in the eleven frontline states, to begin ward-to-ward campaigns in all local governments identified as at risk. The affected states include: Kogi, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Anambra, Bayelsa, and Delta. He said: “We will not wait for the floods to deliver the message to our people. They must have all the information needed to make informed decisions, as we have been given this alert from our neighboring country. What happened two years ago and in 2012 should serve as a lesson to us all." “I have instructed our community officers to start ward-to-ward sensitization today in all at-risk communities. The message must be clear, providing safety measures, emergency contacts, floodplain maps, and possible impact points. Coastal communities should be evacuated immediately, while emergency food banks and medical facilities must be established as these communities relocate. We must also ensure that children are enrolled in safer schools without facing any disadvantage.” The Director General, in a statement by the agency Deputy Director of Press, Mr. Paul Odenyi, appealed to state and local governments to take NIHSA’s warning seriously and implement measures to mitigate risks to communities along flood-prone areas. He called for technical support from stakeholders and government institutions with expert knowledge to ensure that “not a single person is displaced or falls victim to the potential floods.” |
Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, has called on the Office of the National Security Advisder to conduct an extensive investigation into a leaked memo, which was alleged to have emanated from the Zamfara State Government. In the leaked memo, which has been a subject of controversy, approval was said to have been made for high profile bandits, as well as some influential personalities. Appearing during a TVC programme on Wednesday night, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State described the memo as forged. He added that it was subjected to analysis and traced to certain unnamed individuals who he said would face legal consequences for the alleged forgery. However, addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said the memo bothered on national security and should not be swept under the carpet. Okwu chided Governor Lawal over what he called ceaseless attacks on the Minister of State, Defence, Hon Bello Matawalle instead of facing the real issues on ground. He said it was regrettable that the governor had failed to face governance after over one year in office. Okwu, who said Lawal had shown lack of capacity to govern the state, said it was unacceptable that the governor had not made any mark in office one year after. He said: “Ordinarily, we would not have disturbed ourselves with Zamfara State politics, but our concern is to the extent of its implications on national security. “Nigerians are all witnesses to a certain memo that has been in circulation for days now, which was alleged to have emanated from the Zamfara State Government. “We also watched the governor’s defence when he appeared on TVC programme and we came to the conclusion that the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, should take up investigation of that memo. “It is not something that should just be swept under the carpet. The document must be critically probed and adequate action taken.” While advising Lawal to face governance, Okwu added that, “The only accolade the governor has won is the ‘complainant of the year’. “For about 16 months in office, all he has done is to criticize his predecessor, leaving the job he was elected to do. He has proven to be an accidental governor, someone who was never prepared for governance. “It is no longer acceptable for people to be elected into office, and instead doing the work they are elected to do, all they do is to criticize and attack their predecessors. “Governor Dauda Lawal has not recorded one tangible achievement in office after 16 months, rather he has been hiding under the cover of blame to justify his ineptitude. “We say that if the governor, having shown lack of capacity, should honourably step aside and allow a more capable person to govern Zamfara State. “This is a governor elected to govern Zamfara State but he is always cruising around Abuja and other major cities, leaving the people at the mercy of criminals.” The Ohanaeze youth president, who hailed the Nigerian Army for the feat recorded so far in the fight against banditry and terrorism, noted that “the current developments show that there is indeed hope for Nigerians. “We once more commend the NSA, the Service Chiefs and the Defence Chiefs for their renewed vigour which is responsible for the feat achieved in the last few days. “We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to be cautious of those who want to derail the gains made so far in the way against insecurity in the country.” |
